Hello! Thanks for all your hard work.

I have a character who lives through a war and experiences a traumatic head/facial injury that leaves him with asymmetrical features. Before discovering this blog, I wrote him as being a little insecure about it even years later (the main story takes place long after that), but have since retconned that as I realized writing it that way was the result of ingrained disfiguresmia, which I don’t want to perpetuate. As it currently stands, he does not have any particular feelings about his appearance itself/the visible remnants of the injury, nor is he treated differently for it. It’s just a thing, and not the focus of his character. Recently, however, as I was working on more of his background, I realized he ended up bearing a strong resemblance to one of his parents, who harmed him quite badly as a child.

So, my question is this: While nobody would be happy to experience a traumatic injury, would it be in bad taste for him to eventually end up being pleased that he no longer looks so much like his parent? Not that the genetic resemblance has somehow disappeared as a result of an injury, but rather that when he looks in the mirror, he sees himself instead of someone who hurt him?

I want to be careful to portray facial difference respectfully. I thought that maybe associating the visible result of something traumatic (cranio-facial injury) with gaining a stronger sense of identity (in a positive way) might be alright. But I wanted to check, because I don’t want to go too far the opposite direction and romanticize it.

My original note when drafting this was "This is genuinely a rare and interesting take on a character's feelings after getting a facial difference and it goes hard as fuck", which is a Way to say that I like it.

I don't think it's in bad taste at all, it's more of a breath of fresh air with interesting characterization mixed in. Has the character's backstory influencing his feelings on a current event. I get to mildly see myself in this kind of experience as I'm also glad to no longer be told I look really similar to a family member since my partial paralysis got more obvious. Cool as hell.

I really love that you figured out something positive that makes sense for your character to take out of an acquired facial difference. I mean, this is what people do in real life; try to find positives. It looks like your character managed to do that and that's awesome.

I wouldn't consider this romanticization at all, but even if it slightly was then I think we can have a bit of it as a treat after decades of hearing how looking different makes us fundamentally worse. It's not like you're doing some inspiration porn shtick about how an acquired disability suddenly made him into a saint who no longer has a single mean thought in his head.

If this worries you though, try to keep in mind the negative symptoms that he almost surely has - does he have nerve damage, migraines, problems with speaking, fear of loud noises? These things don't go away if you feel positive about something, though it might make it easier to mentally deal with. Show the parts he's more glad about, and the ones that make his life more difficult, days that are better and days that kinda suck. Make him struggle in areas of life unrelated to his disability, and have joys that are unrelated to it too. The usual advice.

This was probably my favorite synopsis of a character with a facial difference I read in a long time, so thank you for sending this. I'd love to see more characters as carefully thought out as this one.

rambling about my arcane s/i following this set of questions (might not answer all of them)

🌸 Do you have any basic headcanons? (Age, Sexuality, Etc.)

Okay, so age: during act 1 of season one, Vi's 15, Caitlyn's 16 & I'm 18-18.5; then during acts 2-3, Vi's 22, Cait's 23, and I'm 25 (i'm placing progress day in spring so prior to my birthday) - aka I'll be 26 post the minor timeskip in season 2 (it's like at most 6 months)

I'm using the League fan birthdays for them (unless we get proper confirmation of their birthdays in Arcane) - so Dec. 19 for Vi, and Jan. 4 for Caitlyn.

Sexuality: I don't have anything finite but we all like women hehe

🌷When does your self-insert come into the story? Is your selfship established before the events of the source?

Mine's there pretty much from the beginning - certainly in acts 2-3 of season one, I'm already in an established relationship with Caitlyn (technically loosely in act 1 - like we go on dates but we're teens so romance isn't the main focus - though our first kiss is on her sixteenth birthday at her request :3)

the third fic I've written is like a snippet of all the scenes that would show my s/i during progress day (idk if the kiss scene would be shown in act 1 or like alluded to/given flashbacks to later on)

my relationship with vi develops alongside her relationship with caitlyn following canon pretty closely.

🌺Are there any other characters that are very relevant to your self-insert or F/O story-wise?

Jayce is like an older sibling figure (and given that Viktor is his work partner, we're at least on friendly terms). Otherwise, Caitlyn's parents are fairly fond of me.

Later on, I grow fond of Jinx & Isha through Vi. I don't think there's enough time there to properly gain familial relationships but we have like an understanding (in a modern au, she definitely would be a younger sister to me)

🌹How would your self-insert function in the source? (Side character, Main character, etc?)

I dunno how to classify it - side character i guess, but she's important to one of the main ships so?? but like she's not really involved much in the politics or hextech stuff unless cait & vi drag her into it

🏵️ How did your ship meet? What were their first impressions?

Cait & I meet first - she finds me when i'm new to piltover, lost on the street & unable to find my way home. she gets her mother to help me get home - we're friends from then on. // her first impression of me was literally that i needed help and well, the fic's not called a savior and a friend for nothing (she was my savior :3)

Vi & Caitlyn meet next - the whole Cait breaking Vi out of jail scene as follows in canon. Uhh very tense first impressions - essentially the canon ones (like Vi's surprised that Cait's freeing her & Cait sees her as a way to get a lead on the attacks in Piltover)

Vi & I meet last. Literally the second they return from Stillwater, Caitlyn goes to find me (she promised she would once she returned) and drags Vi there before they head to the Undercity. It's a very brief meeting but she comes away thinking I'm a good painter and my main impression is that she's very pretty (like it's a brief interaction or I'd have more).

🌻Does your self-insert or F/O go through any character development throughout the story?

Vi stays pretty true to herself the whole story - that's the point. She has a good heart and Vander told her to keep her heart that good no matter what. She manages, in my opinion.

Caitlyn... has a bad arc but she's at least trying to fix what she's done at the end. (AKA, she goes a bit dictator under Ambessa's influence for those who haven't watched the show) still, by the end of it, she regrets what she's done and like i said is showing with her actions that she's not like that anymore (i know it doesn't absolve her of her actions but her mother dies and sends her down that spiral so...)

As for me... uhh, honestly I think I'm similar to Vi. I stay pretty much the same from beginning to end - loyal to those I care about (with some exceptions in Cait's case during her worst era - like I still love her, I don't think a childhood love could be broken that easily but I can't be with her like that)

🌼Is there an official confession scene between the two of them?

You know, I don't think they say I love you officially in the entire show - it's shown but not said lol. I'll probably amend that though whether that's somewhere like s2 e8 or after everything's over and done...

For Cait & I, that first kiss is as much a confession as any - though the first I love you is also important (i haven't thought much on when that is, but likely a few dates in)

For Vi & I, our first kiss is during her pitfighter era sometime (I'll have more thoughts on this when I actually write stuff during that time, I'm still writing in season 1 - though I'm almost to season 2)

🍀 Do You have any other scenes in mind? Angsty, Tender, Funny, Etc.

Like I said, I'm following canon pretty closely so most of those scenes still hold weight. But I'll mention a few snippets I probably won't get around to writing. (or they'll be short if I do)

S1, E6 - when Cait's settling Vi after she takes the shimmer to heal her wounds - that moment where it's implied that Cait wants to kiss her, she has a little moment of panic because she has a girlfriend waiting for her and that's why she changes the subject so abruptly.

S1, E9 - when Jinx is all 'I paid your girlfriend a visit' and she reveals Caitlyn, Vi can't help but ask about the other girl (aka me) and JInx is all 'who? oh!!! her... nah, i just left her asleep in caitlyn's bed) (aka Vi may not be 100% in love with me yet here but she still cares :3)

Honestly, the rest of what I have in mind will probably be written so... *shrugs* // though also i'm thinking that my s/i should get injured at some point (like she's a painter, not a great fighter (though she's probably trained a little with cait as kids)) but I'll figure out when - that last fight would work or either of the other big fights in season 2 (the one where they get like attacked at the speech mel's giving or during the thing w/ isha and them later on in season 2 (bc my s/i is there so... but vi gets injured there so maybe only one large scale injury should happen...) sorry, i'm rambling now lol

Ok I know Halloween is over but I am still very much hanging on to it lol.. Did Damien and the DA have any special Halloween traditions?? And how do they change and/or stay the same after Dark reconnects with the DA after everything??

Hmm, I mostly imagine Damien and the DA being quite busy on most holidays - considering their positions - so rarely anything that's very extensive. Typical things leading up to the day of, such as carving pumpkins and lightly decorating Damien's home - and the DA placing a few things around Damien's office, often without the mayor noticing until later, when someone else mentions the addition. They each also might wear subtle Halloween-themed accessories, like a bat-shaped tie clip, pumpkin-shaped cufflinks, or orange colored boutonniere or pocket square.

Considering the holiday's association with sweets, they will, of course, not miss the opportunity to bake plenty of sweets and pastries themed after pumpkins and ghosts and such - and eat more than just a few of them even as they go.

They're both usually too busy to really attend any parties or anything after becoming mayor and district attorney, but back at university they would dress up and occasionally go to costume parties.

As for Dark, well... most things don't really change, though neither of them have any obligations to attend to anymore. Depending on how soon after a reunion takes place, those old traditions may just settle into place as easy as if they'd never stopped. What differences there may be would mostly just be caused by whatever shenanigans Wilford and any other Egos might be getting up to - which is just bound to happen.

The sudden plethora of sweets is, of course, a surprise to all the other Egos except Will.

I'm sick in bed with the rona so naturally the next step is to ask you what Damien would be like taking care of a sick S/O. (Whether it's covid specifically or not is up to you)

Oof, I'm so sorry to hear that. Do take care and get plenty of rest. I hope you feel better soon.

The moment Damien notices anything being off about you, you might as well clear your entire schedule and expectations of getting anything done for the next week at least, because he'll be doing the same and making sure whichever sick loved one gets the proper rest and care.

One of Damien's strongest love languages to give is acts of service, and that comes out all the more when someone he cares for is sick or injured or otherwise even the slightest bit out of commission. He enjoys doing things for his loved ones as it is, even when it's not the least bit necessary, so when there's even the smallest bit of due cause, he's going to be waiting on them hand and foot. There won't be even the slightest complaint because he truly has none. He loves taking care of the people dear to him.

Depending on the severity of the illness, he may not let them so much as get their own glass of water, though such levels of worry would only really come out were his S/O suffering a truly nasty fever or horrible nausea or the like. Even with something as simple as the flu or a cold, he's still going to try to insist on doing it for them anyways, but don't let him do everything, because he will end up neglecting to take care of his own needs. A nudge here and a reminder there should keep him on track with looking after himself to, at least, the bare minimum - and again, it depends on how sick his S/O is.

Even when sick with something simple, they're going to be spending a majority of their time sitting or laying down. Damien will put some quiet music on for them - if that would help - or get them something to read, or simply read to them himself, both in efforts to help with inevitable boredom and to hopefully soothe them into falling asleep. (If applicable to how you view the setting/universe Damien comes from, he'll also turn on a tv or provide them the remote to do so themself, but will insist the volume be kept low.)

If they have a terrible fever - especially one high enough to make them sluggish or delirious - Damien's going to barely be leaving their side, and when he does will only be to swap out any sort of wet hand towel to be placed across their forehead or to get a coldpack for them.

Unless the illness is clearly just the common cold, chances are very nearly 100% that Damien made them go to the doctor and went along with them. Whatever instructions were given for them to follow to get better, Damien will be doing to the letter.

All-in-all, Damien would be doting on his Little Monster quite a lot, unless discomfort with such a thing were expressed. He'd need to keep being reminded and pressed to look after himself as well, but there's no one with better bedside manner than him.
