      Even in the earliest hours of the morning the oasis market was bustling with activity, as it so often was, but the Falconer hardly noticed. He was far too preoccupied tending to his birds, securing hoods and tethering jesses to perches. As he worked, he spoke quietly to his charges, as he often did. “There we go, that knot won’t be going anywhere, no matter how much you pull on it, you clever devil. Hm, your talons could use a coping, couldn’t they? We’ll take care of those this evening.”

      In no time all birds were settled on their display perches, relaxed and content. The Falconer took a moment to look out over the crowd. He recognized a few regulars at this point, but with people coming from far and wide to buy and sell, there were new faces every day. There were a few whose clothing denoted them as possessing the wealth and status of his usual patronage, but other than that, everyone looked the same to him. 

      That was, until one particular stranger approached his tent.

      They were clearly not wealthy, dressed in plain ranger’s attire with few trappings. It was their smile as they drew near that stood out to the Falconer - warm and genuine, almost affectionate, fixated on the birds. “Hello,” they greeted him softly. “Pardon me, I was just hoping to get a better look, if you don’t mind. I’ve never seen some of these species in person before.”

      For a moment the Falconer forgot how to speak. That smile, and the look in their eyes, full of rapt interest that bordered on wonder, had him transfixed. Just before he had been silent long enough for it to be awkward, he managed to recover. “By all means, look as much as you like.”

      He was not disappointed at their indication that they were not looking to buy or hire his services - in truth, his business was slow but steady, just enough to keep himself and his personal collection of birds comfortable. Rather, in this stranger’s obvious admiration for the birds he saw a kindred spirit. He had to make a conscious effort to shift his eyes away from that smile in order to avoid making them uncomfortable, but he couldn’t resist glancing back as the stranger came even closer, their gaze on one bird in particular. “Is that a Shikra?”

      “Indeed,” he replied with a note of pride. 

      They inclined their head, their smile growing even more awed. “I didn’t know they had such striking red eyes. How stunning.”

      Stunning, indeed, he thought. Distracted as he was, he still couldn’t help his enthusiasm bubbling up at the opportunity to share more about his beloved birds with someone who could appreciate them. “Aren’t they? Only the males have red irises - the females’ eyes are gold.”

      “Oh!” The stranger took out a little book and scribbled down a note. “How did you come by him?”

      The Falconer stroked the Shikra’s back. “I raised him myself. I’d been observing his nest, and when the parents didn’t come back for a full day I retrieved him.” 

      “Oh,” they said again, solemnly this time. “He’s fortunate, then.”

      They had soft green eyes, themself, the Falconer noticed. “I suppose so,” he said, a warm smile of his own playing around his lips.

      “Can you tell me more?” they asked, notebook at the ready.

      Another swell of enthusiasm rose up in the Falconer’s chest. “I certainly can.”

      Neither of the two paid heed to the steady ascent of the sun as they talked on and on. The Falconer spoke of all his travels collecting and studying different kinds of birds. The stranger took visual notes as well as writing, and eventually the Falconer’s curiosity grew too much to resist. “May I see your sketches?”

      Looking a little bashful, the stranger nodded nevertheless and handed over their little book. The Falconer took off his glove to avoid damaging the pages as he thumbed through. The majority of their drawings were of various desert flora and fauna, with some landscapes here and there. Nothing pictured was stagnant - even sturdy trees were rendered with energetic strokes to make them look alive and swaying in the wind. “These are very good,” he told them. “You clearly have a fondness for your subjects.”

      Another smile, this one faint and wistful, briefly lifted the corners of their mouth. “I do. As much as I love the desert, though, it’s my dream to travel like you and sketch the wildlife of all sorts of places.” Just as quickly as it had appeared, their smile vanished, and they looked a bit embarrassed. “Sorry, I…I don’t know why I told you that.”

      “No need to apologize,” he assured them. “For what it's worth, I hope you get the chance.”

      They inclined their head, studying his face. “I think you mean that. Thank you.”

      “Of course,” he said, a little taken aback but smiling warmly. 

      It was at that moment a little girl carrying a plush doll came running up and grabbed the stranger’s hand. “Dove! There you are! I’ve been looking for you for hours and hours!”

      They stroked her hair fondly, beaming at her almost the same way they had the birds. “Oh, I’m sorry I troubled you. I’ve been talking to this gentleman about his birds. He knows more about them than anyone I’ve ever met.”

      Her eyes widened. “More than you?”

      “Yes,” they chuckled. Turning back to the Falconer, their smile grew reluctant. “Thank you for all your time and patience answering all my questions. I’ve learned so much from you.”

      “It was genuinely my pleasure,” he replied. “I always enjoy talking to a fellow enthusiast.”

      It was clear they intended to take their leave. The Falconer felt a pang of regret at the realization. He took a deep breath and clasped their free hand in his own. “I’m glad I met you. Will I see you again?”

      Dove’s expression was startled, but their features turned the color of a desert rose. “I hope so,” they said earnestly. 

      The last smile that graced their lips was wistful. “Maybe next time we meet, it will be on one of your travels.”

      “I’ll look for you,” he found himself saying.

      The blush on their cheeks darkened. “I’ll look for you, too.”

      Led by the little girl, they took their leave, the child chattering blithely about things she’d seen at the market while searching for them. The Falconer watched until they’d disappeared into the crowd. Somehow his heart felt both immensely heavy and feather-light at the same time. Witha heavy sigh he turned back to his birds. He had a feeling that, despite the glaring sun ever beating down on the oasis, his world would be a little dimmer until he saw that smile again.

Any and all hot takes you submit to us must be about PHIGHTING. So long as it involves Phighting in a relevant enough way, it will be accepted.

Must be a hot take, (or a take in general), not just you rambling about how hot you think your favorite Phighter is or something. That means no confessions. Gotta emphasize this one because y’all keep sending confessions and not hot takes.

No spamming a hot take in hopes that we see it sooner, we’ll get to you when we get to you.

You can’t slip your headcanons into hot takes. You think a character should go by they/them? Cool. Submit it as a headcanon, but please don’t use it in a hot take. (Having a hot take ABOUT a headcanon doesn’t violate this rule).

You can make a hot take about a hot take, but please don’t go after people or be disrespectful when doing so, unless the person in question is horrendous enough to be called out for their actions.

No copypastas. If you suspect a hot take is a copypasta, please tell me and share the original copypasta so I can confirm that it is, in fact, a copypasta.

No ai-related submissions. That includes C.ai.

Terms of Requests:

For typing quirk, username and NPT requests: tell me your source and kintype, whether you want masc, fem or neutral-leaning names, and any other extra bits you want included with your request (e.g. Typing quirks for a computerkin with fem name and themes of blue and ones and zeros, NPTs for a fictionkin of Needles from TMAGP with masc names themes of love and sharp objects, etc).
