• --- HARDCORE WEEK — DAY 4/15 --- •

Well, it turns out my brain hardcored the pain instead of the productivity.

I couldn't study at all today, and also cried because I was losing my mind. I have a terrible headache so I will sleep 🥱

The uni released a tentative timetable of the endsem exams. Its supposed to start on the 8th of February. I feel a little prepared because of last month's productive streak but there's no harm in revising. I'm planning to slowly skim through concepts tomorrow, and not do too much and tire myself out.

B-Boy Posse 1987 Hip Hop

🥱. I think a lot of you might know how much I love and appreciate hip hop in general, but this type of bare-bones mid-to-late 80s stuff that was largely driven by very simple drum tracks really has not aged all that well, in my opinion. Rappers' approaches had clearly developed over the previous half-decade or so beyond monosyllabic rhyme schemes, but these beats, man…in a lot of cases, it really feels like they had significantly devolved. I mean, before this, people were just liberally sampling from or re-creating disco or funk breaks, but a lot of beat constructions immediately after those days ended up yielding stuff that felt overly simplistic and damn near unlistenable in hindsight. Like, I will gladly take some goofy and inane, 15-minute, stream-of-conscious rap about how a purple Martian came down to Earth and ate some old lady's cat or whatever over everything that's on this record, because the beat on a song like that just tends to be way more enjoyable than whatever's being offered up here.

But to provide some context for this blasé release, this appears to be a showcase of the B-Boy Posse, a collective of hip hoppers who were handpicked by the one and only Boogie Down Productions, a legendary rap group from the South Bronx that was fronted by KRS-One, a guy whose autograph I happen to have on a tennis ball…

And while BDP themselves are by far the best act to appear on this record, they aren't the ones who ended up contributing its best song, overall; because that honor goes to the only tune that actually sounds like it sampled something for its beat: The Bennetton Gang's "Gangster Cool," which is clearly on some aggro LL Cool J copycat-type shit. This obscure group from Queens—if they were actually a group at all—only ever had one release to their name: a single-sided 12" acetate that only two people on Discogs currently claim to own. And the lead song from that record, which is pretty good, but not great, appears on this comp. So if you're a diehard collector of rare old school rap tunes, you might wanna give this record a look, just for that sole tune alone.

But other than that, this is a pretty unremarkable release. There's some nice narrative storytelling in a couple tracks, like BDP's own "9mm Goes Bang," but the rudimentary beats that accompany any decent lyricism here have so much dead and empty space within them that they end up nullifying anything else that might be considered good 😔.

Imagine hearing this every day from someone... "I'm so tired!" 🥱 Even if your partner worked in a warehouse all day in the heat moving boxes and came home every day and told you how tired they were, you'd finally one day say ENOUGH!  Let's do something about it! Here are some things to look at, test/fish out, explore and look into that could help!  WATER💧would be #1 are you drinking enough?🥤, parasites, thyroid issues and any and all viruses can cause this.  Are you getting enough B vitamins, real sleep 😴, eating clean and exercising for blood circulation🏃‍♀️‍➡️?  These can be a few of the culprits. Circulation is key too, napping and sleeping looking out the window to be rescued is not enough! NaNoWriMo Day 14: Update!

I managed to pull off 2565 words before midnight even though I procrastinated all day due to something not feeling right. I did however write more and promptly delete it and didn't like it.

See I managed to embarrass myself cause unbeknownst to me at that time my friends were already having a convo about him, cause they heard some girls outside whisper about Yuta, but I was too busy to notice, so when I heard his name I was like "Yuta what?" and long story short: HE HEARD ME 🤡 but he was very nice and chill, we chatted, he gave us his autographs, also held my phone and noticed my Taeyong lockscreen and Felix photocard, complimented me and my friend on our Japanese 😆

Then my other friend used me as her spokesperson and told me to tell him a few things in Japanese, so while we've waited for our orders I was like "uhm, well, so..." but I composed myself and then my other friend chimed in. In the end when we were outside he waved at us and my non-kpop friends asked if he was our friend sjhahhdhhahshagshaha. See, I'm already besties with Ten CLEARLY, now I'm befriending Yuta (he was on Music Core cheering for Taeyong, so he's obviously stalking me) I'll get that tea on SM soon!!!

Ramadan day 2 : so much more difficult than day 1. I didn’t think I could make it and contemplated breaking my fast around 16h. I had a completely debilitating migraine - I couldn’t get any school work done and now I’m anxious about my 08h meeting with my first language acquisition professor. It’s only 15 min and it’s to discuss like potential final project ideas……but I haven’t the readings for Tuesday yet.

I managed to keep my fast and immediately took migraine meds. I think for sahur I need to actually take pain meds preemptively - one of those extended release 8 hour ones or something. I really don’t know how i’m gonna get through a school day esp since I tend to really go downhill around 14h and my comp ling class starts at 16h15 🥱 …..I guess the best I can do is make niyyah during sahur tmrw and listen to my body and not try to push too hard.

Yeah, TPTB are not responsible for the CW PR side of things, but they aren't any better tbh. They just don't understand what we've been begging for this past year. They don't get it. At all. They made that big announcement last September, where they said "Check back here for regular updates and teases."

1990s House Playlist

Got some adds this week for this 1990s house playlist that I’m slowly building. At some point down the line it’s going to be, by far, my longest playlist, but we’re not even close to reaching that point yet 😅.

The two adds for the Spotify version come from Warp Records, who appear to have opened up some more of their catalog to Spotify since the last time I updated this playlist. Warp is synonymous with the explosion of IDM and ambient techno, putting that stuff on the map with an incredible 1992 compilation called Artificial Intelligence, but around that same time, they also released a less appreciated comp for the acid warehouse crowd called Tequila Slammers and the Jump Jump Groove Generation, which features a bunch of sick early 90s house bangers. Some of them were already on this playlist, but with this update, I was also able to add “You Can’t Stop the Groove,” by Coco Steel & Lovebomb, and “Happiness,” by Nightmares on Wax, the latter of whom is way more known as a downtempo and trip hop entity than a house one. And both tunes are currently sitting at under 1,000 plays, so let’s change that!

And those two songs have been on the YouTube version of this playlist since jump, but I also added a couple others to it that aren’t on Spotify as well with this update. First is a song that comes off of a comp I have been repeatedly posting about every Sunday now for the past month or so: the FFRR label’s California Dreaming, a 1993 release that showcased an eclectic crop of psychedelic cyberhippy electronic music that was emanating out of the Golden State at the time. This song is by a Bay Area native named Aquatherium (he’s also gone by B. McCarthy), and it’s an early 90s, hypnotic, tribal house, floor-filling monster called “Feelin’ Real Good (Aqua’s Trance Mix).” And across its couple different uploads on YouTube, it’s currently sitting at about 4,800 plays. Pretty low!

And the other add is the most obscure of this batch, one that a certain someone had to upload to YouTube themselves. It comes off a 1999 12-inch compilation from the Paris-based Basenotic Records called Bakchich EP #4 and it’s by a guy who’s originally from Chicago named James Curd, who, earlier in his career, went by Jimminy Cricket. His song’s called “Testing & Balancing” and uses a bunch of pitched-up samples from the Al Green early 70s soul classic, “Love and Happiness.” And it’s only at a little over 100 plays, so give it some love!

So, here’s where we currently are with this thing: the Spotify version of this playlist is currently at 15 songs and is an hour and 45 minutes long, but the YouTube version is nearly double that, with 29 songs at almost 3 and a half hours. Yet another electronic genre and decade that the Spotify library is severely lacking in 🥱. So, you know which of these two options is the better one.
