Rewatching her scenes and… somehow Grace Zabriskie gives Sarah Palmer such intense “wish I had a son” resentful daughter mom vibes. Like Sarah’s jealous of Laura. And she’s afraid for her. And she’s uneasy. She blames Laura for what Sarah subconsciously (or consciously?) knows of Leland’s sexual abuse of Laura because to blame Laura moves the blame further away from Sarah (who chose to marry, have a kid with, and stay with Leland). She is already mourning Laura. How she boils that down is she wishes she had a son. She never says it but you can see it. Her distance from Laura. Her tense little spats with her over smoking or trivialities are the most they interact. It’s a studied distance. Sarah is always tense around her eyes and even moreso when she’s anywhere near Laura, who in turn has written off her mother as something like Leland’s talking furniture.
It’s insane.

“Did anybody kill Laura Palmer?”
Yes. Her father, Leland Palmer, did. He sexually assaulted her as a child too.
I do not give a damn for the “open question” people sometimes claim exists over if BOB was “to blame”. In these sense that it is a mystical world depicted, I can see why on the face of it people want to raise that.
But the degree to which it cheapens a story about something not mystical, but horrible and real — child sexual abuse, incest, resulting sexual self harming, substance abuse and other disordered behavior, and eventual targeted murder, femicide — I just can’t see it as a viable perspective.
To ask if the community Laura was born and raised in, that Leland before her was born and raised in “also killed her” (and killed Theresa Banks too) is fair. As is naming other sexual abusers of Laura or people who knew in large and small ways and did not act effectively to stop it or help her enough.
But that is just adding more accessories to the murder, not lessening the rapist and murderer Leland’s culpability.
Even within the possession framework I would argue it is clear he was a partner and participant in his possession and in BOB’s actions. If he wasn’t, or wasn’t meant to be, from the point of view of the writers, actors, and other creators of this work… that would be very hollow to me.

On the Twin Peaks wiki, Jacques Renault’s page...
Is “have his way with her” really the way we refer to rape? This isn’t even about Laura being an underage prostitute. She was tied up against her will and raped by Jacques Renault. I have edited it.

💔 She was an abused teenager, using sex as self harm following sexual abuse. She was desperately trying to find an emotional support, proof she was good, and a fix that would obliterate her consciousness to get relief.
She, a kid year old being sexually abused by her father and multiple other men, did not “work” at a gentleman’s club she was pimped, exploited, and prostituted at a gentleman’s club by adults who knew alongside other underage girls. She is not get through your day goals. She is not sex work goals. That is a disrespect both to girls (and boys) like her and to adults in the industry, which is shitty capitalist exploitation but is not able to be conflated with underage sex trafficking of sexually abused girls hooked on cocaine, or the rape she endured.
Get through the day for Laura but not because you want to try on her clothes. As she said to Donna: I don’t want you to wear my clothes. I love you. I don’t want you to live like me. ♥️
Remember this: if Laura Palmer managed to work at a gentleman’s club, have a best friend, two boyfriends, do the meals on wheels and work at Horne’s department store while going to school and inhaling cocaine, you can get through today.

♥️ the men I watched it with also were lacking, even the good ones. Many of the women also, but fewer were laughing at the wrong moments or cringing and dismissive at the scream.
Good meant they could get in full it once explained. And my dearest male friend did get most of it but mainly it overwhelmed him so he ignored what he understood.
not to be man hating but the fact that the abuse in the film came from a man. and ill assume most critics in the ninetys were men. that they either couldnt see what theyre own actions or possibly actions of men they knew really did.
oh and this was 1992 so laura was still a spectacle for all the wrong reasons. the movie’s incredibly empathetic, but only if you can dare to have empathy for her, and i’m guessing too many men thirty years ago did not!
