Welcome to the Rotomblr blog for The Galar Battle Academy. We have created this blog in order to make appropriate updates and notices in an easier, more effective format. However, we will also be making informative posts. Feel free to reach out via the “Ask Here” button at the top of the page for any questions you would like answered.

The school’s mission is to create strong, brave and powerful trainers — as well as assist them on their journey towards their goals, whatever they may be. We do this through our curriculum, support networks and workshops. We also have clubs that students themselves run, which include hobbies and interests of their liking.

Whilst this is a Battle Academy, there are a variety of classes we offer. All classes include:

Hi, happy spooky month, I have a ✨manga rec✨!! And in the spirit of the season, it's a horror story! >:3c

I want to spoil as little as possible because I went into this manga essentially COMPLETELY blind and, honestly, imho, I imagine it's the ideal way to experience the story. I literally first heard about it from a random youtube comment on a video about an entirely different manga--one which, mind you, had VERY different themes, which colored my preconceptions and added to the surprises for me later on!

ANYWAY, what I mean by all that is I'm going to start with the simplest possible summary of the premise, and if that's intriguing enough for you to give it a shot, then I recommend diving right in!! But, if you still need more of an in-depth, slightly spoilery rec? Then I'll gush a bit more under a cut to see if I can hook your attention.

With all that out of the way,

The Summer Hikaru Died is a horror/supernatural story about a high school boy named Yoshiki whose best friend (Hikaru) went missing in the mountains outside of town. What comes back is... something else. It looks, acts, and talks like Hikaru, but it's not him, and Yoshiki is the only one who seems to notice.

The only other thing I knew going in was that the commenter made a brief mention of the "Hikaru"-thing protecting Yoshiki, which seemed odd but intriguing alongside the rest of the premise.

So if that's enough for you (plus the fact that I'm telling you I haven't stopped thinking about this story since I read it two weeks ago), then please check it out! There are only 5 volumes so far!! Suffer through the wait for the rest with meeeeee ಥωಥ

I know what you're thinking, and YES, it appears to be BL between the TIMID HIGH SCHOOL BOY and the ELDRITCH HORROR WEARING THE SKIN OF HIS BEST FRIEND.

And it's SO GOOD.

No SERIOUSLY, for real though, I had NO inkling going into this that it was even in the realm of possibility that it would involve romance

Let alone a nuanced, slow burn, VERY QUEER romance layered with ruminations on grief and identity and one's relationship to society

(ON THIS NOTE, I must advise up front that I DO NOT KNOW if this story will end in tragedy... It's still ongoing, after all! BUT, I think either way it will be an amazing story and... maybe I'm just delusional, and though this may be considered spoilery in itself, the most recent chapters have me optimistic that we might indeed be on track for some sort of happy ending... eventually.)

Anyway, I cannot express enough how incredible it was to uncover this aspect of the story organically without knowing about it beforehand. Born and raised in a rural village, Yoshiki is deep in the closet, and that's reflected in how subtle the hints are at the beginning. Over time, it starts to become clearer and clearer, but always with a layer of plausible deniability, at least if you're not expecting it to take such a queer turn. ("Hikaru" literally makes a ton of "no homo" style jokes early on, which... god don't get me started--)

As you might guess, Yoshiki had feelings for the real Hikaru before his disappearance, and ooh boy does that affect how much the grief and guilt and fear play into things. It's delightfully fucked up.

So yeah. I 100% expected the plot of this manga to revolve around the intrigue of the monster finding out Yoshiki knew its secret, the fear of not knowing when the monster would strike next, etc, but NO! That particular "reveal" happens within the first 10 pages, and then the entity just kind of... lives the life of a high school kid! He's kind of a little shit, but for the most part, he's a nice boy! Yoshiki is the only one who knows who "Hikaru" really is, but much of the tension comes from him having to come to terms with that, rather than the fear itself.

...and also the OTHER horrors and mysteries. There's tension there too, considering it's where the actual plot lies, lmAO. Just because "Hikaru" isn't a totally evil monster doesn't mean there aren't a lot of grotesque and scary things in here. Most of this manga I would classify more in the "supernatural" genre than "horror", but in those moments it DOES delve into horror, it goes pretty damn hard. I remember more than one moment where I felt sharp regret about reading it in the dark at 2 a.m. 💀

Still, if you dare, it's worth the read. I can't recommend it enough.

P.S. I wouldn't say it's a "funny" manga but it does nonetheless have an amazing sense of humor. There are a handful of actual jokes and gags that did have me rolling, but more importantly there's an unspoken, implicit acknowledgement of how absurd this all is, in that way only good self-aware horror can achieve. Take the main character Yoshiki for example. The image I used of him up above? The unsettling camera angle, the haunted look in his eyes? That's just how he always looks. The panel after that one shows that all he's looking at on his phone is a text from his sister reminding him to pick up wasabi flakes.

P.P.S. There's apparently an anime adaptation coming out sometime? I'll probably watch it, but I expect something will be lost in translation. We'll see, I suppose.

*- To be precise: Yoshiki is gay. The creature that takes Hikaru's place has a more nuanced (and alien) perspective on sexuality, and... I'll leave it at that.

Summary:

Aoko doesn’t understand why Kaito is avoiding her, and she resolves to do something about it.

Kaito has been avoiding Aoko lately.

Well, not quite like that - they see each other everyday. Aoko will whack him with her mop if Kaito even so much as tries to avoid Aoko’s presence. No, it’s not that.

Kaito has been avoiding skin-to-skin contact with Aoko. No, not like that, either, would you get your damn minds out of the gutter, please!

It’s just…

Aoko and Kaito have been best friends for as long as she can remember, from the moment Kaito gave her that beautiful blue rose under that clocktower. Since then, they’ve gone through everything together, holding hands most of the time. They’ve always had skin-to-skin contact, whether it be hand holding or hugging or teasing touches. They’re also used to touching the other’s forehead with their own for reassurances when they’re down sometimes.

For example, if Kaito ever sees someone performing street magic, his mind turns to his father, and his eyes lose their light a little. Aoko always notices, and she'll poke his cheek in a teasing but grounding way or hold his hand to bring Kaito out of his slump before it goes any deeper. Kaito, in turn, gives Aoko pats on the head and thus teasingly messes up her hair, which will bring Aoko’s head back to the present. He also holds Aoko’s hand whenever they both feel like it.

She doesn’t mind it. And she knows Kaito feels the same.

However, since starting high school, their skin-to-skin touches have lessened slightly. Aoko hadn’t thought of it much, because they were both so busy with school and after school clubs that they hadn’t had time to catch up with each other as often as they’d liked.

Even still, they’d touched each other whenever they had the chance to. Aoko likes having skin-to-skin contact with her best friend.

It's a good question. Why is he so determined? It would be easy to just say something like It's my job! and keep it moving. He could argue that it was for Orin's own good, that he'd be helping him— Harrison could say many logistical things to explain the significance of what he does...but teenagers seldom listen to logistics.

After so many years of talking to so many kids, Harrison's learned many valuable lessons. One is that kids, despite what adults may think, can smell bullshit pretty well. No one likes being lied to, but being lied to when you've got such a limited view of the world feels especially cruel.

So he tries not to give excuses or properly packaged answers whenever he can. "Because I don't think you're being listened to." The nurse had wanted him in this room because she was concerned. Most of the staff had heard the rumblings about Orin's behavior in class, but she had seen something that unnerved her and Harrison could only guess what it was.

"I'm not so much trying to reach you as I am just trying to hear you." Because something is happening at home. Something is setting him off. Harrison has yet to meet a child who's just like that, as some parents try to explain to him. They're not like that. They're never just like that.

"I think— and I could be wrong. You can tell me if I'm wrong, it's alright— but I think you act the way you do in class because you need to be heard. You want to be noticed or in control of something. Something that you feel is missing when you're outside of school." That was always the rub of it; Harrison could do a lot if something was wrong within the school, but outside? Outside the school, he had less authority.

"In here...I don't record what you say. I don't write anything incriminating. I just listen. You understand that? You could tell me everything you're feeling...or stare at me for the rest of the class period. I'll either listen or talk to fill up the space— it's your choice, Orin."

Hell no. I haven't even come close to even engaging in the activity that is required to make kids 😭😭😭😭

Depends on who I am with, usually just with my friends or family because they know it's a joke on my end, but I don't like using it with strangers because I don't want them to think I'm mean or anything 😭

Happy endings because I need to feel something in life besides the horror I already face LMFAO

Probably Not Worth a Watch (after the second season disappointment)- I binged the first season in a day or two, so of course, I loved it. I actually watched the series just a couple months before the second season was announced. I was super excited for it. Initially, I put off this show because of the age gap, which caused disinterest. I thought the age gap was actually much larger than it was. It's significant and involves a teenager, but it never crosses the line. The relationship dynamic is basically about the chase or push and pull. The show was pretty humorous, especially Minato's character being charismatic, relatable and endearing. At a first glimpse of the cast, no one jumped out. Boy, was I mistaken. Co-star Nishigaki Sho quickly became one of the hottest actors for me. It was a pleasure looking at his face for 12 episodes. The second season has kind of ruined the show for me. I find myself most annoyed with the leads. Minato's character is basically the same with little growth, and I'm incredibly frustrated with Shin's loyalty to Minato. I don't think a second season was needed.

At this point, you don’t even remember what’s the problem between you and Seungcheol; you just know what you share with him is hostility.

You think it’s probably some childish prank he did on you somewhere during middle school that started the whole thing, but somehow it carries on until now. You don’t even know how you end up attending the same university as Choi Seungcheol when you’ve both opted to go to university outside your hometown.

You can still remember the annoyance waving through your body when you’ve first encountered him in the corridor, the both of you gaping in disbelief before you took the first step to scoff and continued your way to class.

It’s all good  for the first two semesters until you somehow end up sharing a class with him during the third. Since then, Seungcheol has made it his mission to annoy you, and you’ve sworn to get back at him one way or another.

The reason why this…relationship isn’t a good thing is because this has drawn unwanted attention to you. As much as you hate to admit it, Seungcheol is an attractive man with a pretty good reputation. He’s got his fair share of admirers that he usually ignores.

It pains you to say he’s not an asshole (he’s just an asshole to you, not one in general), but that’s the fact. He’s just not interested in his popularitty. You’re not sure why these girls (and some boys) keep on trying to get his attention when he never even bats an eye on them.

So, when they notice Seungcheol actually pays attention to someone that they’ve never seen before, it’s only nature for them to find prey in that person.

You don’t really mind them at first, you figure they’d get bored once they realize you’re just some unfortunate person Seungcheol decides to pick on. But apparently, Seungcheol’s attention is the only thing that matters to them, not the fact that he’s attentive to you just so he can annoy you.

“Sup, loser,” Seungcheol says as he opens his locker two rows next to yours. Of course, the universe hates you enough that he’s somehow able to move his locker near yours.

“I’m really not in the mood, Seungcheol,” you roll your eyes, hastily taking all the stuffs you need before closing the door and leaving just like that.

Seungcheol frowns, you haven’t been showing him any reactions these days, which kinda worries him if he’s being completely honest. Instead of annoyance, your eyes just seem tired eveytime you see him and he wonders if he’s taken his joke a bit too far these days.

But if the actually thinks about it, he hasn’t been pranking you these past few weeks because exam week is nearing and he has way too many deadlines to meet. He frowns, did something happen to you? Or is it something back home?

Quickly shedding the thought away, Seungcheol shakes his head before he steps to his next class. Maybe he’ll try bothering you again once and see if you’re just in a bad mood earlier.

He’s about to pass by when he hears your tired voice, asking someone what they want this time. An alarm goes off through his entire body, he looks through the small gap from the door, the sight of you with a few of girls he doesn’t recognize greets him.

“We just want to know what you did to get Seungcheol’s attention,” one of the girls say, crossing her arms. “Why won’t you tell us? Are you afraid he won’t be paying attention to you again?”

Seungcheol sees you visibly sigh, leaning slightly on the table behind you as you shake your head. “How is it my problem that he doesn’t pay attention to you?”

He frowns at the way the girls snicker between themselves, muttering something under their breath that he couldn’t hear but knows for sure isn’t pleasant.

“Are you that desperate for his attention that you don’t want to tell us?”

“Isn’t it you who’s desperate?” you sigh again. Honesty, you’ve been trying your best to avoid Seungcheol these days because you’re getting tired of these encounters. You’re nowhere near afraid, just very bothered and doesn’t have the energy to deal with them everytime you’re in uni. “Isn’t that why you’re always following me around these days, asking about him?”

“Why you—”

“Anyone mind telling me what’s going around here?” Seungcheol’s bored voice cuts through the empty classroom, the girls immediately turn to him in shock and so do you. His eyes find yours as he leans on the doorway. “You okay?”

You nod hesitantly, unsure why the sight of him stopping these girls from bothering you gets your heart skipping a beat.

The girls stay silent at his question, avoiding his eyes altogether. Seungcheol considers threatening them, a sense of annoyance (and protectiveness, though he would never tell you that) rushing through him as he hears your tired voice. No wonder you haven’t been reacting to his pranks these days.

He opts for a glare instead, looking at them with ice cold eyes as he softly grabs your wrist and pulls you out of the room.

“Have they been doing this for long?” he asks. Why do these girls think they have the right to do so?

“The past month or so,” you answer truthfully. Your gaze is locked at the way his hand is still on your wrist; why isn’t he letting go?

He stops in his track, his grip tightening a little. There are a few seconds of silence before he speaks again. “I’m sorry they did this to you.”

“…What?” you blink in confusion. Is he actually apologizing to you for things he didn’t even do?

“What about I walk you to your classes until they stop?” he offers, which surprises you a little.

Not used with this sudden turn of mood with Seungcheol. You playfully go past him, brushing his shoulder in purpose.

“Might as well apologize for all the time you’ve been pranking me.”

Seungcheol bites back a grin, he doesn’t know if the change of phase between the two of you was something he’s always wanted, but maybe it might turn into something he never expects it to be.

Every fabric deserves to be included and properly taught. The basic knowledge is necessary to be able to service everyone so this needs to be standard for every licensed professional. I know some of y’all are scratching your head like “I didn’t know it wasn’t” or “why should we have to?” (The privilege to not notice or feel the need is a whole other post). 👀

Very little is taught in most beauty schools leaving a professional void that has fostered Salon Segregation. Texture Equality should and will be mandatory in every school curriculum. Way to go Louisiana Cosmetology Board for starting it off.

Next up, EVERY👏🏽OTHER 👏🏽STATE👏🏽!! And while we are at it, let’s push the Exam Boards to include it in the theory and practical sectors of the test. This way, the information is not optional and overlooked. It is necessary that each school hire and train effective teachers to properly train the students with a multi-textural inclusive exam to follow. This is how we elevate the standards of our industry as a whole!

What can you do? Call your state’s Cosmetology board and demand that they follow in Louisiana’s footsteps.
