On opposite sides. That's how it always had been, and that's how they were now facing each other.

(Even if "sides" didn't exist anymore.)

The only sounds on their cottage was the birds chirping outside, the grandfather clock tick-tacking and the focused breathing of the two beings.

Clack! The black knight landed on f4, putting the white king in check, the sound echoing in the still air.

Aziraphale’s lips trembled and a chuckle emerged.

"My dear boy!" He wiggled a bit on the armchair, reclining comfortably, his smile smug. "This is how I always told you; evil always contains the seeds of its own destruction."

Crowley only shrugged, sipping his scotch not to comment, hiding himself behind the glass. Aziraphale only raised his bitchy eyebrow, and still smiling, moved his bright white knight over Crowley's, capturing it with a little satisfied sigh.

There was no way for him to win with only the king and a knight, after all.

Aziraphale reclined again, ready to offer Crowley the choice of stopping now or to watch his king fall – but when he looked up, he only saw Crowley's wicked smirk.

A mischievous, demonic aura almost oozed from him.

"Aziraphale..." the drawl itself – teasing, mocking – on his name told everything he needed to know.

He looked at the board again, and felt himself getting pale, cold sweat running down his spine.

"Do you know how bloody annoying it is to pull off a two knights checkmate?"

He was slouching in his chair, gesturing broadly with the glass, the smug demon.

"You... weren't trying to win..."

A snort.

"Not with two knights, noooooo. But there was no way that I'd let you win, you know?"

Crowley leaned, capturing Aziraphale’s bishop with his knight.

Both looked at the board, both with a knight and a king.

"We always balanced each other out after all, didn't we?"

There was no winning with this infuriating demon.

Aziraphale huffed in annoyance, but couldn't fight his own smile.

good omens and. portal. portals are on the mind today

"I'm telling you, this will work!"

"Adam, I have no idea what you're going on about" Pepper looked doubtfully at the arrangement. Wensley and Brian also didn't look so sure, but decided not to voice their concerns.

"Psst, let's see what he's gonna do now" Wensley sat down on the nearby crate that had worked as a bench all those years.

Adam rolled his eyes. "Really, you should all have more faith in me. I had this dream, and he talked to me! We have to help him!"

Pepper looked more annoyed by te second. "Help him who, exactly, Adam?"

Adam stopped rearranging the stones on the ground – he had already made quite a progress despite the lack of help from his peers – and pinched his nose in frustration.

"You just dragged we all out here, no explanation, no nothing, and expect us to not be confused?"

"Yeah, you do know that we have exam week next... we should be studying" Wensley said and Pepper winced at the reminder – Brian decided this was a good moment to fetch the crinkle-est bag of chips, just watching the discussion unfold. He didn't care too much about the exam, he had already bombed them all anyways.

"Okay! I'll explain, but we are losing time! So this Warlock is trapped in a pocket dimension. He needs our help to get through, so he gave me the exact instructions to build this portal-"

He went on, Pepper and Wensley face growing concerned and confused at Adam's telling. They weren't kids anymore. It had been years since they had met in the woods, or that they had played any games like this.

"- and then after doing that, I just have to say the magic words"

Brian chocked on his chips.

"And what these magic words would be, Adam?" Pepper said irritated, closing her arms, but Adam was unbothered.

"Let there be light!"

And there was. A beam of light descended on the magic portal, the stones floating around Adam.

"Uh-oh" he looked up, while his friends tried to understand what was happening.

"Fuck!"

And he was gone, the stones hitting the ground.

"Damn, I didn't knew I could get high chips" Brian said dreamily.

I'm leaving for the UK (Wales) and a gay wedding(!!!!) EARLY AF tomorrow and I'll be traveling all day and into Monday. I will be there a week! ヾ(@^▽^@)ノ

I can't believe we've had Kitteh Leeloo a whole year already. (=^-ω-^=)

I've only had one tiny repair project this month. And a few calls. It looks like I might have some repairs and at least a medium sized project to do when I get back.(。-ω-)ﾉ

I've been pondering rereading the Vampire Chronicles... I may need to get them out of storage upon my return.(∩⌣̀_⌣́)

I'm really glad the Dudette won't be alone while I'm gone. Although I'll miss hanging out with her and her gf. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

The worst thing about traveling is the getting there. I'm calling on my good travel Gods/ vibes/luck whatever that all will go smoothly for me and my BFF. Any good vibes y'all want to send out will be greatly appreciated. ✩⃛( ͒ ु•·̫• ू ͒)
