Dearest could you spare me a drop of some nsfw headcannons for amyas??? I've been scrolling through his tag and I agree with anon with the small pathetic ones being the doms while we peg the strong confident ones supremacy 😞✊.. Ofc you can write him however you want though, it's so funny how I'd drop him in a dark room full of spiders to ROT but be attracted to him at the same time LMAOOO anyway would love the face reveal king 👑
(Been a hot minute since we've summon the pathetic cupid to the table so I will grace you with his presence.) [Mentions of knife play (if you squint and somo)
Amyas can be your angel....or your twisted, perverted mess of an angel. It's all about where you set the grounds in your relationship. Given an inch, he will take a mile. Put him in his place, and he's your toy to command and break as you please.
Amyas lives by his personal moto of "weakness is power". He feels the cuter and more submissive he is, the more you'll love him - and see he's too helpless and weak to ever leave alone. He's watched you shower before and watched porn where he imagined you two as the actors - but pretends like he's never seen a human body before. To be fair, it's nothing like actually touch you so his shyness isn't a total act. He blushes and stammers as he asks you to take off his cardigan because he's too nervous getting undressed in front of someone so beautiful - but really he just wants you to touch him more...and you're pretty as hell.
That moto works just the same if you let him dom. He's so sweet and shy - you never would have guessed him to be the same freak that shoves his tongue down your windpipe until you nearly faint and grip your hips so forcefully they bruise with his finger marks. His praise comes off as thinly veiled degradation for you letting this worthless mess of a cupid do as he pleases with you - and how eternally grateful that worthless mess is. Want him to choke you he will make you see stars. If it's jealousy/angry sex, he will engrave his name into your collar with one of his arrows so everyone knows you belong to him and once he cools down he let's you mark him so people know he's yours too.
Speaking of his arrows, there are different types that cupids can possess. Amyas in charge of both "true love" and "heat of the moment" arrows. The first is - as the name implies, but the second is a little different. That burst of undeniable passion when two people who absolutely hate each other fuck, or when eyes meet across the bar for a one night stand the parties in question will never forget for the rest of their days. Amyas would never used his arrows on you.... unless he had to, but he would graze your skin with one of the latter. With just a small nick, the effects are temporary. He'll cut you again and again if he grows addicted to the faces and sounds you make. It's pretty much knife play with an aphrodisiac filled blade.
Whether you're breaking his back or he's breaking yours, Amyas likes a little bit of romantics thrown into the mix. You'll know the evenings plans with he's cooked you a full course meal and wears nothing but the apron he slaved away in. Maybe you want to eat dessert off his chest. He has the sensitive nipples to make it extra sweet with those sounds he makes. Candle lit bedroom, a playlist of all the songs that remind him of you, a nice bubble bath afterwards. Bird brain's got you covered.
Another sensitive point is his wings. You can pull him from his dominance streak with a sharp tug on his feathers, or stroking their base gently. Run your fingers down his spine where they meet and he will be putty in your lap.
Amyas finds your sleeping face to be extremely beautiful. I mean - you always are to him, but while you're asleep you're more angelic than him. If you don't know about his other side he will take this advantage to whisper every little dirty secret he has as he jerks off near you. He'd temp teasing those pretty lips with his cock, but he knows he's not worthy of such an honor and he'd probably end up just shoving it down your throat or cumming on the spot.
Cupid boy can really sing. Straight pipes on this one. It's best to make sure all windows are closed and maybe even soundproof your room with how loud he gets. He's a lot quieter if he's top, but that doesn't mean he shuts his mouth
As a final note, Amyas wears panties with bows on them. He's not a huge fan of boxers or other cuts of underwear - also they're just really cute and he likes putting on cute things for you.

~King of the Dragonfish: Chapter 15~
Maul sighs with an unusual breadth of relaxation, the tingling aftermath of climax running from the tips of his fingers to the ends of his fins. Everything feels… so good. He marinates in that state of being for a little while, tail still and arms limp.
Eventually, the sith remembers what he was doing.
Yes the purpose of this was… was to show Kenobi that-
Kenobi! Where did he go?
Maul rolls himself upright and reaches out in the force, his energy finds the jedi like a moth finds a flame: inevitably drawn to its light. He sways across the small room and around the magma boulder, finding Kenobi clutching his legs hard enough to turn his knuckles white, smelling strongly of lust and anxiety and distress.
That mixture was so… very pleasant. Fear and desire. Desire and fear. Yessss.
The dragonfish sith breathes in and curls around him, setting fingers under the other man's scruffy jaw and tilting his chin up. Blue eyes pop open with just a trace of panic to them. The sith hums with enjoyment, scratching at the underside of his beard.
Panic panic panic… what to do about a panicking jedi? Hmmm…
“Maul,” Kenobi says hoarsely, then fails to complete the thought.
Fix the panic? Make it worse? The fear was… was yes, very yes, but a panicking Kenobi would not lay with him. Jedi were weak, they could not handle fear.
Maul decides to try soothing him like an adult zabrak would comfort a youngling. It is the only figment of comfort he can recall. Hopefully it would serve.
Lacking horns to tug on, the sith pulls gently on fistfuls of his hair, just enough for consistent pressure, and scrubs their cheeks together. One side, then the other.
“Mnnn~”
He hears the jedi swallow, and feels cautious fingers land on his chest just beneath the collar bone. The touch would almost seem like Kenobi was trying to push him away, except the force behind it is negligible.
“What-” the man croaks then clears his throat, “what are you doing?”
“You are upset,” Maul explains. “Is this not soothing?”
The jedi's force signature wavers, some tiny signal he cannot translate. “I… I suppose it is. In a way. Why are you trying to soothe me, exactly?”
Maul hums, rubbing against him some more. Something here is working, he can sense it. “Hnnn… mine,” he croons, “As my revenge I am keeping you, soft jedi, and so I will keep you well.”
The jedi in question scoffs with amusement, even as his head tilts aside.
Is he inviting…? Unlikely. It must be automatic.
… how pleasing.
“Keeping me well, are you? On a stone floor with no bed or blanket? In a cave with no sun? There are no books, no caf, nor kettle. Hardly five star accomodations.”
Maul pulls back, looking his captive over. He preens a bit to see the edge of panic gone away, replaced by a challenging glint. Yes, much better. He likes Kenobi best when Kenobi has fight in him.
“These are things you wish for?” he asks.
Kenobi squints at him, suspicious. “…yes?”
The dragonfish sith withdraws, nodding as he backs away toward the water. “I will bring you gifts, and you will favor me.”
The jedi raises a brow at him. “Favor you? What precisely do you mean by that?”
Maul leers at him, tail swishing about. “You already know what you will give me.”
Kenobi stands when the magma boulder comes between them, coming around the side in a huff, “Now just hold on a moment, I didn't agree to anything!”
With hissing snickers, Maul ignores the token complaints in favor of throwing himself into the water. Down he goes, tail and fins propelling him into the tunnels.
It is a long swim to where he might hunt for creature comforts, but that gives him time to consider how best to transport such things. A kettle, a bed and blanket, caf, and -most difficult of all- sun.
He does like a challenge. Perhaps he shall steal Naboo’s sun? Surely a star would be a gift glorious enough that Kenobi would give up these pointless notions about keeping to himself.
It is worth a try… but the sky is much further away than land, so perhaps he will look for the other items first? Yes? Yes.
The dragonfish sith first looks in shipwrecks. Pleasure cruisers scuttled on rocks or lost in storms. The salt water tends to degrade anything organic, but metal and seals take longer to claim. The first wreck is too old, and produces nothing of value, but the second has a conservator that hasn't been opened since it's downfall.
Maul pries it open with the force, letting the rotten food stuffs settle before digging around in the contents. He lays claim to a variety of canned drinks, sealed water bottles, and a few jars of condiments that still seemed fine. The cupboards reveal a few questionable jars of fruit preserves, and oddly enough a very well sealed package of crackers.
The lot of it goes in a slightly rusted pot, lid put on top and tied with seaweed.
Returning with one success in hand should suffice… but Maul is used to a demanding master. Above and beyond was the only sufficient completion of a task, nothing else had ever seen praise.
And so, the hunt continues.
He swims for shore now, and recalls another moment in time. He had been sitting on his ship, flying between Tatooine and Naboo, and using that brief time to research the jedi he had encountered.
Jim… Djin… Jinn? Yes, that was his name, the one he had killed in glorious combat was Jinn. Strange, that he was named for a creature who gives wishes. Maul rather thinks that he deserves those wishes after having bested the man.
Maybe he does have them, and simply hasn't used them? Hmm…
Pictures of jedi Jinn were common on the holonet, he had found them easily. A notorious troublemaker of grandmaster Yoda’s line. With Jinn was pictured the man he had not yet known as Kenobi.
His murderer.
Wishes and murders. Hm. How entertaining!
More to the point, he recalls a holo of Jinn and Kenobi in a formal tea ceremony. That particular image had been of the older jedi looking into the surface of his drink thoughtfully, and Kenobi having just finished a sip. He had looked delighted with the contents.
Tea, yes, his jedi must have tea.
It is, ironically, his stealthy hunt through a seaside village looking for tea or caf that nets him a different opportunity altogether.
Someone has ordered a day bed, but failed to unbox it as of yet. The mattress is still vacuum packed, and the frame contained within it's box.
Maul circles the find and pets it covetously. What fortune!
The dragonfish sith lifts the box out the window and slithers after it, avoiding people as he returns to the water. Pot of treasures and soggy box in tow, he returns to the depths. He spends the long journey gleefully anticipating Kenobi’s reaction to his success.
To be continued...

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 14 - South Korea
It's Winter break and I am FINALLY picking back up my 2023 watch through (given how it's December, I probably won't finish this before 2024, but that's okay!).
This is another one I watched live at the time at my friend's house, and my main memory apart from Seb winning is Mark Webber's car having an alternator failure and then going on fire (right after his Singapore last lap DNF which, ouch) and Nico Rosberg having a very sparky front wing. iirc Jenson had an alright race and scored points, though I cannot recall how Lewis did, so let's jump in!
Once again saying how much of a core memory the old F1 intro is
and also asking why can't F1 provide alternate commentary options, why must Crofty and Brundle be forced upon us 😭
On a more practical note, I never knew why this race was officially called the Korean GP instead of the South Korean GP
But Yeongam was a fun track even if the layout looked a bit odd.
Alrighty: Starting grid whiplash time! SEWIS FRONT ROW!!!! (this is for meeeeee) Grosjean P3 and Rosberg P4 Jenson P11 and Jev down in P16
[Formation Lap]: Almost everyone on the super soft tyres apart from Ricciardo who's on the mediums
and immediately cut to the mad rush of mechanics and engineers running back to the garages
huh, so today I learned that no one is allowed to sit on the pitwall at the race start in case there's an on-track incident. I really feel like I should have known this before now 😅
[Start/Lap 1]: Seb has in Seb fashion just shot off into the distance
CARNAGE
One of the Ferrari's got tagged, someone else span round, turn 3 was like a dodgems rink
right before all that happened Grosjean overtook Lewis and is in P2
[Lap 2]: But Seb is already 2 seconds ahead of P2. Just GOAT things.
[Lap 3]: Now 2.6 seconds 👑 (When Seb dominates in a Red Bull it's sexy, when anyone else does the same it's not - hope that helps x)
The Top 5 after the lap 1 nonsense is Seb, Grosjean, Lewis, Nico R and Hulkenberg.
[Lap 4]: Jenson has minor front wing damage 😭
ooh cut to Raikkonen and Ricciardo scrapping over 7th
and now Jenson has to come in for a new front wing 😭😭😭
it's apparently affecting his brake temps, fml
Okay start replay: oh my days the field was five wide before the braking zone for turn 3 no wonder that there was dodgems.
[Lap 6]: I'm starting to wonder if I mis-remembered Nico's front wing failing and sparking along the track. I'm sure it was at this Korean GP bc I remember my friend being so upset over it
[Lap 7]: JENSON FASTEST LAP!!!!!!!
Though this was years before getting the fastest lap was worth a point, but it's worth a point in my heart
[Lap 8]: Cars starting to make their first pit stops
[Lap 9]: Back to Seb fastest lap, he's over three seconds ahead of P2
Meanwhile Lewis just got told to push before his first stop
[Lap 10]: And in he comes for stop number 1! Super softs off for Mediums, he comes out in P9
So according to Ted the two stop is actually quicker, but the cars that have stopped already are likely going to have to do the three stop. inch resting.
[Lap 11]: And saying that, Grosjean comes in to cover Lewis, and comes out juuuust ahead
[Lap 12]: And in comes Seb! Also putting on the mediums
but we need to cut back to the Lewis & Grosjean battle bc it was getting spicy
And a Lewis fastest lap for funsies 🥰
[Lap 13]: He's now 8 tenths behind Grosjean
[Lap 16]: Hmm, there is not much happening
I am enjoying watching the cars go round though, but then again that's just me 😅
Saying that, Hulkenberg is leading a train of Alonso, Raikkonen and Webber from 6th-9th.
oh it's a DRS train before we called it a DRS train
[Lap 18]: And Rosberg gets past Ricciardo for 4th
[Lap 20]: Jenson, who's in P9, is apparently not having a fun time with his tyres
Meanwhile Fernando is trying very hard to break through past Hulkenberg
sadly it's not happening
[Lap 22]: And *another* Seb fastest lap
I do love it when he collects them like pokemon
[Lap 23]: Jenson pits again :(
tbf it would be very on brand for me to deliberately forget if Jenson had a bad race
[Lap 24]: Breaking News: Fernando has still not gotten past Hulkenberg
I am starting to remember this part of the race and I'm pretty sure Hulkenberg does end up finishing in 5th
"Right front is destroyed" "I've been through the graining phase, and it's dead" the precursors to 'Bono my tyres are gone'. Lewis also sounds painfully done on the radio 😭😭😭
[Lap 26]: and there's a somewhat stranded Force India in the barriers.
oof Di Resta had a slow spin into the barriers after getting on the kerbs
[Lap 28]: Meanwhile Lewis is painfully slow compared to everyone else
Ah ha! There's Rosberg's front wing failure (not that I was wishing ill on him, more well done me for remembering correctly)
He was about to pass Lewis on the straight when the nose of the car just dropped down.
And it is now trailing on the ground putting sparks everywhere
[Lap 29]: So either by choice or circumstance Lewis wasn't able to get past Nico while he was driving slowly with his borked front wing.
"When are you gonna call me in man these tyres are fucked?" Lewis' very not fun Korean GP
[Lap 30]: and he FINALLY pits for another set of mediums
the race is 55 laps long so he should in theory make it to the end
[Lap 31]: FUCK Perez's tyre just failed
I do NOT want anymore Silverstone flashbacks, that was not fun
The whole tread of the tyre just ripped itself off the canvas while he was going down the straight, NOT GOOD
[Lap 32]: Very understandably we have a safety car
"And Pirelli are here to inspect the remnants of their tyre, not that there is much" Ted Kravitz committing murders live on air since 2013.
Well I have to say that certainly spiked up my blood pressure, it's the fact that Perez just happened to be in the camera shot when it happened.
[Lap 33]: So while we have the SC, the current top 5 is: Seb, Grosjean, Raikkonen, Lewis and Hulkenberg
[Lap 34]: Cut to a probably quite stressed Pirelli engineer in the Merc Garage looking over someone's shoulder
[Lap 35]: Shoutout to Webber, who had to pit again for running over the debris from Perez's car so dropped down to P11, and was given a set of super softs because Red Bull did not have any mediums left
You can see why he went over to WEC
[Lap 36]: And we're back racing!
[Lap 37]: Thankfully for my nerves all clean through turns 1 and 2
...
and then there was turn 3
Sutil divebombed into Webber, who's car is now on fire.
Don't cut to the depressed RBR mechanics 😭
also WHERE ARE THE FIRE MARSHALLS?!
okay there they are
oh now we have Lotus on Lotus violence
and.... there's a fire car on the track??????
aaaaand safety car again.
[Lap 38]: Well... Lap 37 chose far, far too much violence
That was certainly a sequence of events
right before all that happened, Hulkenberg overtook Lewis for P4
so I'm not having a fun time
[Lap 39]: Good news: they put out Webber's car, bad news: it looks like a wreck
iirc Japan was seven days after Korea so yeah, a very not fun time for the mechanics who needed to fix that
[Lap 41]: And we're racing again. Boys I beg of you NO NONSENSE
Turn 3 I am watching you like a hawk
Lewis and Fernando are scrapping over P5
Jenson sighting!!!! he's in P7
[Lap 42]: Meanwhile Seb is still leading out front, by almost 2 seconds this time
[Lap 43]: So the top 5 is: Seb, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Hulkenberg and Lewis
[Lap 44]: Grosjean's been given the all clear to race Raikkonen for P2 🍿
[Lap 45]: Breaking news: Lewis is still behind Hulkenberg
but in actual news we have FIVE cars fighting over 10th
Maldonado, Guiterrez, Massa, Perez and Bottas
and I legit cannot keep up with who is where they're chopping and chaning so fast
[Lap 46]: Okay it's Massa (P10), Gutierrez, Checo, Valtteri and Maldonado
Make that Perez now in P11
that was a great battle though!!!
[Lap 47]: Lewis is very close to Hulkenberg...
...but still doesn't get past through turn 3
[Lap 48]: LEWIS IS INTO P4!!!!
...nvm Hulkenberg got back past on the second straight
And Fernando was very briefly in P5 but Lewis managed to hold fim
[Lap 49]: Bless at least the Sauber team are having fun
[Lap 50]: Lotus telling Grosjean that he can overtake Kimi but Romain saying he can't???? Team Enstone doing Team Enstone things
Massa and Perez under investigation for causing a collision, fellas...
At least Seb has a 4 second lead
[Lap 51]: 5 laps remaining klaxon!!
[Lap 52]: slow-mo shot of Seb's tyres, his front right does not look pretty
which was the same tyre that went on Perez's car
[Lap 53]: Lewis asking on the radio if anyone has suggestions for how to get past Hulkenberg. idk if Merc can gaslight, gatekeep girlboss their way out of this one
And Rosberg takes P8 from Jenson
[Lap 54]: uh no not another yellow flag
oop, Ricciardo's car decided to stop working
[Lap 55]: FINAL LAP!!
Lewis has properly closed up to Hulkenberg 👀
and Fernando has closed up to the back of Lewis
and SEB WINS THE SOUTH KOREAN GP!!!!! 🥳🍾
(gosh I've missed a driver sounding happy over the radio when they win)
The rest of the top 10: Raikkonen P2, Grosjean P3, Hulkenberg P4, Lewis P5, Fernando P6, Rosberg P7, Jenson P8, Massa P9 and Perez P10
lol at me saying Jenson has a nice race when he Did Not. But Lewis finish in the top 5 so that was positive bc I really had no recollection of how he did. Seb goated as per, and Lap 37 owes me financial compensation for all that nonsense.
Next race - Japan!

New story in Politics from Time: How a Meme Turned Ruth Bader Ginsburg Into a Liberal Icon and Symbol of Supreme Court Polarization
After Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg issued a fiery dissent in Shelby Counter v. Holder, a case decided in June 2013 that invalidated a key part of the Voting Rights Act, then-NYU law student Shana Knizhnik was inspired to launch a Tumblr blog called The Notorious R.B.G. The site depicted a fierce image of the diminutive justice in the style of famed rapper The Notorious B.I.G. — and the famous meme was born.
More than five years later, that image has helped turn Ginsburg into a bona fide pop culture icon — an unusual designation for any octogenarian, let alone an 85-year-old justice on the nation’s highest court.
The Notorious RBG meme has been so successful, Khizhnik tells TIME, because of “this humorous juxtaposition and contrast between the ’90s hip-hop icon that was B.I.G. and this octogenarian Jewish grandmother, which certainly doesn’t evoke images of bravado.”
View this post on Instagram
Omg we are less than 4 weeks away from the book launch! What better way to celebrate early than with RBG temporary tattoos? 👑 The first 200 people to email [email protected] with their mailing address will receive one of these amazing Notorious RBG temporary tattoos from @tattly! 👑 If you get one, share on Instagram and tag @deystreet @notoriousrbg ‪#notoriousrbg‬ @tattly and one person will be randomly picked to win a free copy of the book! 👑 (These temp tats are especially appropriate given RBG’s reaction to people getting permanent tattoos of her–check that video out at notoriousrbg.tumblr.com)
A post shared by Notorious RBG (@notoriousrbg) on Sep 30, 2015 at 9:17am PDT
“But at the same time, her work has spoken truth to power and she’s really done an amazing amount — even before she was a Supreme Court justice,” Khizhnik says.
Now, the meme takes on special significance as Ginsburg recuperates from cancer surgery, which caused her to miss Supreme Court arguments for the first time ever in early January. On Dec. 21, she had two cancerous growths removed from her left lung, which doctors discovered after she fractured ribs during a fall in her office on Nov. 7. Ginsburg was previously treated for cancer in 1999 and 2009, but never missed court sessions as a result. On Jan. 11, the Supreme Court announced that Ginsburg had no remaining signs of cancer and would soon return to work.
Her latest health battles coincide with her continued popularity. She was the subject of two movies last year: the documentary RBG, released last May, and the Felicity Jones-fronted biopic On the Basis of Sex, which was released in December. She’s also long been parodied by Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live (Ginsburg has said she approves of McKinnon’s portrayal.) The meme has also resulted in two books: Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, written by Khizhnik and journalist Irin Carmon in 2015, and The R.B.G Workout, a detailed breakdown of the justice’s intense workout written by her personal trainer, Bryant Johnson, in 2017.

Meanwhile, her fan base on the left largely regards her as a hero. Some devotees plastered the Notorious RBG image on posters at the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C. Justice Rebeca Martinez, who serves on Texas’ Fourth Court of Appeals, tells TIME she organized a screening for RBG in Austin attended by guests dressed up like Ginsburg. Pennsylvania-based lawyer Amy Wallace says she adorned her house with art featuring the justice — and even got a tattoo of Ginsburg in April 2017.

— Amy C. Wallace (@thewomeniread) April 28, 2017
And the meme continues to endure.
“Sometimes memes are flash in the pans — here today and gone tomorrow,” says Ryan Milner, an associate professor of communication at the College of Charleston, who studies memes. “[This meme] has worked for a long time — especially as we’ve moved from the Obama administration to the Trump Administration and the court has gotten more conservative.”
But with her health in question and the Supreme Court shifting, many wonder how long Ginsburg will remain on the bench and what will become of her legacy. For her fans, Ginsburg has become a hero in the fight for equal rights for all and a trailblazer for women. But for others, she has become a symbol of a supposed apolitical court becoming increasingly polarized.
A feminist trailblazer
Ginsburg is often credited as one of the primary legal architects of equal rights protection for women. As an attorney, she successfully argued several landmark equal rights cases in front of the Supreme Court, including a case that guaranteed men and women in the military equal access to a dependent’s allowance, and another case that allowed widowers to receive the same Social Security survivors’ benefits as widows.
President Bill Clinton appointed Ginsburg to the Supreme Court in 1993, and the Senate confirmed her by a vote of 96-3. She was only the second woman appointed to the court, following Sandra Day O’Connor’s 1981 appointment by then-President Ronald Reagan. As an associate justice, Ginsburg wrote landmark decisions in several cases, including one that allowed women to attend the Virginia Military Institute for the first time.

Her dissents have also made an impact. When Lilly Ledbetter‘s pay discrimination case made its way to the Supreme Court, an all-male majority ruled in 2007 that Ledbetter’s case was invalid because she didn’t file a lawsuit against her company within an 180-day period. Ginsburg said the Court “does not comprehend, or is indifferent to, the insidious way in which women can be victims of pay discrimination,” and encouraged Congress to find a remedy. In 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law.
Off-duty, her strict workout regimen with Johnson — whom she started working with in 1999 after her first bout with cancer — has also contributed to her “notorious” persona. Johnson calls Ginsburg a “super diva,” and says she’ll often show up to their training sessions on an hour’s sleep.
“I remember the justice had given me a couple of books about her, but I never really read them because the justice didn’t hire me to be a fanboy,” he says. “It wasn’t until I saw the documentary that I realized why she has this cult following … Women have so many rights because of all that she’s done quietly, behind the scenes — like a ninja.”
But despite her larger-than-life persona, the real Ginsburg is reserved and hard-working, according to people who have worked with her in the past. Elizabeth Langer, a former attorney who worked on the Ginsburg-founded Women’s Rights Law Reporter journal at Rutgers, describes her as “very reserved and very diligent.” Kate Andrias, a law professor at the University of Michigan who clerked for Ginsburg in the 2006 term, says that she was an “exceedingly demanding” boss, but she also cared about her staff — mentoring them, taking them to the opera and bringing in cakes for birthdays made by her husband Marty, who died in 2010.
“There’s a fairly stark contrast between the meticulous, careful and reserved person that I worked for and this pop culture icon,” Andrias says. “But, at the same time, when we were working for her, we could see her quiet wit and commitment to justice.”
Ginsburg seems amused by her late-in-life fame. She said in 2014 that she owns “quite a large supply” of Notorious RBG shirts. She often likes to compare herself to the Notorious B.I.G. by noting they were both born in Brooklyn. In an interview at New York Law School in February 2018, she marveled at her status as a pop culture icon, saying: “I am soon to be 85, and everybody wants to take their picture with me.”
‘It really helps to polarize the court’
But Richard Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine, warns that Ginsburg’s popularity ultimately may be harmful to the court, which has become increasingly polarized. Hasen compares Ginsburg to the late justice Antonin Scalia, one of the most conservative members of the court and one of Ginsburg’s closest friends. Much like Ginsburg on the left, Scalia became a hero for those on the right.
“It’s problematic when justices are considered to be celebrities. It really helps to polarize the court, and it plays into the notion that each side has its own stars to root for and against,” Hasen says. “There’s nothing wrong with celebrating a hero, but it’s a bit of a problem when the person is still sitting on the highest court. Maybe the stardom is what gave her the freedom to criticize then-candidate Donald Trump.”
Because Supreme Court justices are supposed to be apolitical and guided only by law, Ginsburg faced criticism for calling then-candidate Trump a “faker” in July 2016. Trump said Ginsburg should resign, and legal experts argued that she may be pressured to recuse herself from cases involving Trump. She later expressed regrets for her remarks, saying that justices should avoid commenting on political candidates.

But though Ginsburg’s comments on Trump energized Democrats who see her as a hero, others have noted that her own views aren’t as always as liberal as they seem. After her Supreme Court nomination, abortion rights activists worried about her past comments about landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, which Ginsburg called too broad and argued that the case should have been framed as an equal rights issue rather than a privacy one. (Ginsburg has repeatedly spoken and voted in favor of protecting abortion rights.) On the Supreme Court, she has occasionally been criticized for her votes on cases involving the use of force by police, including siding with the majority on a 2015 case that granted immunity to a police officer accused of using deadly force.
When Ginsburg described NFL players who kneeled during the national anthem to protest police brutality as “dumb and disrespectful” in 2016, some argued that it may be time to retire her “Notorious RBG” persona altogether. (Ginsburg later said her comments were “inappropriately dismissive and harsh.”)
“It’s interesting to see what happens when reality doesn’t live up to the meme,” Milner says. “Sometimes there’s going to be a contrast when icons’ persona aren’t totally based on who they really are.”
‘Her legacy isn’t over’
Despite the cracks in her pop culture persona, many women say it’s hard to deny the significance Ginsburg has had for women.
After giving birth to her daughter, Ginsburg entered Harvard Law School as one of only a handful of female students. She didn’t receive a single job offer after law school, even though she was at the top of her class. When one of her professors recommended her for a clerkship with then-Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter, she was turned down because he reportedly wasn’t ready to hire a woman.
“A lot of us have similar stories — I do,” Langer said. “Her career path is a remarkable path for women to follow… And her legacy isn’t over. She has years to go.”

The women who spoke to TIME for this story all say that they have their law careers thanks to Ginsburg — both for her work shaping equal rights as an attorney and a trailblazer in her own career.
“I know that without her efforts, I wouldn’t be in this seat. I grew up in this world — especially as a young woman of color — where the roles of women and men were divided,” Martinez, the Texas justice, says. “Justice Ginsburg knew that changing the culture meant changing the laws.”
The ever-present speculation about when Ginsburg will hang up her robe hit a fever pitch after Justice Anthony Kennedy retired last year, allowing Trump to nominate Brett Kavanaugh to take his seat and appearing to tilt the court even further to the right. But Ginsburg has repeatedly said that she’ll do the job as long as she’s able — and has hired clerks through 2020. In July 2018, she predicted she has at least five more years on the court.
“She’s always been underestimated,” Knizhnik says, “and she keeps proving people wrong.”
