Rowan HC's 🐺

If Rowan loves you, most things go, and he'd probably actually like you putting a collar on him and walking him around, but in a sexual kink kinda way and in HUMAN form, not in wolf form.

In wolf form, he would really enjoy scratches and pets from the person he loves, But ONLY you, nobody else he'd EVER let. He'd also fully allow scratches and pets in his human form from you, he still struggles at times differentiating between his more feral side and human side.

In your question involving "stupid ass questions," things like that would probably really confuse Rowan with him not being the brightest, hahaha.

MC: Does your wolf side have a different name?

Rowan: Huh?

MC: Like, is the wolf in you like a different person?

Rowan: ...What? No? I AM the wolf, what do you mean?

MC: Yeah but like, is it different?

Rowan can be a big dumb dumb and doesn't know his own strength. Cuddles are more like death grips, and he doesn't even realise until you're tapping him aggressively because you can't breathe lmao.

He's also fiercely protective over the person he loves, similar to Volo, he'll kill anyone in an instant who upsets you, even if its the smallest thing, but it's not going to be a pretty sight.

Rowans' diet is pretty extreme. He eats A LOT in one day, usually meat, and he likes it raw. Watching him eat also isn't the prettiest sight, man eats like a fucking wild animal (obviously)

Rowan CAN look very charming in his human form, especially when he cleans himself up a little, but he's not a charming person to be honest. 🤣

If Rowan gets home from being out in a rain, you'll know about it. He unfortunately smells like wet dog when he gets wet, even in human form.

He's a growler, in the bedroom, and in general, if he hears a noise in the middle of the night, he'll let out a little growl

Man's hairy, and he's not gonna shave for you. There would be NO point because it would grow back SUPER quickly.

Although Rowan has extremely good control of his form when it comes to changing and his emotions, if something pisses him off enough or if he gets TOO overwhelmed by something, he WILL transform in and instant, even though he won't mean to.

Five Years Ago...

Incoming Call... Bossman 🐺

I snatched my phone. “Hey David, what’s up?” I asked.

“Asher nearly burned our cabinets trying to make a grilled cheese. I can fix it but it’d go a lot faster if I had an extra set of hands that actually knew what they were doing.”

I rubbed my face. “Give me a half-hour and I’ll be there,” I grumbled.

“Thanks, Tank.”

“Mmhmm.” I hung up.

With a sigh, I swung out of bed and started rooting around on the floor for my jeans in the half-light. The one-night-stand trashbag entreated me to come back to bed. That it was too early to get up.

I found my jeans and yanked them on, followed by the tank top that had been haphazardly thrown over my lamp for whatever reason.

I shoved my feet into socks and then my boots. “You’d better be gone by the time I get back,” I snarled at them. “Or else you’re going to have my claws at your throat. And don’t touch anything.”

They moaned in complaint as I snatched my leather jacket off the door knob and stormed out of the bedroom to go get my keys and working gloves.

I left my apartment and stomped down to my motorcycle, kicking it to life and thundering out of the parking lot.

Incoming Call... Prickstian 🐺

“What do you want, Christian?” I demanded.

“Something happened to my bed frame. It fell apart last night. Do you think you could take a look at it? Maybe try to fix it?”

I snorted. “You and Amanda have fun?” I teased.

He spluttered. “That’s—that’s not—I just—”

I burst out laughing. “Say please and buy me lunch and I’ll see what I can do.”

“Fine,” he grumbled. “Please.”

“Give me forty-five minutes to get home to grab my tools, then get to your place. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I hung up and went to find my keys.

“Where ya goin’, Big Bad Wolf?” A familiar figure leaned against the doorway to his bedroom while I fished around in his kitchen for my keys. Where had they fallen out?

“Pack calls,” I said.

Quinn hummed in disappointment. “Shame,” he crooned. I rolled my eyes. “You really shouldn’t let them boss you around so much.”

“They don’t. They ask.” I pulled the keys from where they’d ended up in the basket that normal people would keep some fruit in and turned around. “I won’t be coming back tonight.”

Quinn pouted. “I don’t get to see you?”

“No.” I scooped my boots off the ground, jammed them on, and stomped out the door with my keys in my hand, slamming it behind me. If Christian made some comment about the blood on me, I was going to pummel him into next week.

Incoming Call... Pizza Guy 🍕

I took a deep breath, preparing for the onslaught, and answered. “Hey Guy. What’s up?”

“Heeey Tanker! Remember Geordi from middle school?”

“You two were a package deal, of course I do.”

“Well... his heater busted last night and he called me to see if I knew anyone who might be able to fix it. And you were the first one I thought of.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Text me his address,” I said. “I haven’t seen him since middle school. And you owe me one for this, Guy.”

“I solemnly swear I will personally deliver you an on-me pizza sometime later this week.”

I leaned against my kitchen counter. Sam had invited me over to his place for the first time later this week... “Any day but Friday and you’re on.”

“Deal!”

“Text me the address.”

“You got it!” He hung up.

I sighed and went to go get my toolbox from my storage closet. Technically it was supposed to be a pantry but I always seemed to store anything but food in there. No wonder Sam had given me a look and a sarcastic comment when he opened it.

I grabbed my toolbox and working gloves—and car keys. I wouldn’t be able to take the motorcycle with my box.

My phone went off. I glanced down at it.

New Message Pizza Guy 🍕 Here’s the address!

I copied the address as soon as the second text came through and put it in my map app as I locked the apartment door behind me and went to the parking garage.

I followed the navigation to Geordi’s house—halfway across Dahlia, thanks Guy—and knocked on the door.

The man who opened the door looked almost exactly how I remembered him. Just older and his hair had darkened from just straight-up blond to riding the cusp between dirty-blond and light brown while his curls had gotten even more voluminous—if that was even possible. His eyes widened on seeing me. “Whoa. Tank—you... you got big.”

I laughed. “Yup.” I popped the p. “Guy let you I was coming?”

“Yeah. C’mon in.” He beckoned me inside. I stepped in. The house wasn’t as big as David’s but it was really cute. In the same sort of nerdy-but-still-aesthetically-pleasing way Geordi used to decorate his school binders. “I’ll show you to the furnace.”

“Thanks.”

I followed him down some stairs to a semi-finished basement, where the furnace was free-standing around some wooden planks that would be studs if the walls were ever put up around them.

“Do you need me to stay and help?” Geordi asked, rocking up onto his tiptoes and back down.

“Uh...” I looked around as I pulled on my gloves. “Give me a few minutes to see what’s up and if I need you I’ll holler.”

“Okay.” He went back upstairs while I started to poke around.

I knelt and peered low at the furnace, searching for the pilot light. It was shut off but didn’t respond when I tried to turn it back on, so that definitely wasn’t the only problem. I made a face and huffed in frustration.

“Geordi never mentioned that the infamous Tanker from middle school was a shifter,” a voice said.

I twisted to see a person standing between two of the wooden planks. I raised a brow and concentrated on auras for a moment. Telepath. I snorted. “Well. He didn’t know,” I replied nonchalantly. “How could he? It wasn’t like I could tell him.” I narrowed my eyes as I felt magic poking around my brain. “Get out of my head, Telepath. You’re not gonna like what you find.”

They didn’t reply, but their magic didn’t retreat either.

Rolling my eyes and clenching my fingers around one of my tools, I dredged up a memory. Not my worst one of Quinn, but one of the darker times with him. One of the ones that hurt.

The Telepath cringed and their magic vanished from within my head. I snorted in satisfaction and went back to examining the furnace. “Geordi know about you?” I asked. “Know what you are?”

“Yes,” they replied slowly. When I peeked back at them they were staring at me wide-eyed.

“Good.” I threw my head over my shoulder. “Geordi!” I shouted. “Come give me a hand!”

His footsteps thundered down the stairs and he reappeared, granting a kiss to his partner before slipping past them to kneel next to me.

“Before I start,” I said. “Long story short, now that you know about magic, I can tell you that I’m a werewolf. Guy doesn’t know. Guy can’t know unless someone applies for him to get the same status you have with the magical government.” I handed him the tool in my hand and he accepted it while giving me a similar wide-eyed stare as his partner’s. “Now. I’ll explain everything as I fix it so if this happens again, you’ll know what to do, okay?”

“O-okay. Are you just gonna gloss over the werewolf thing, then?” he demanded.

“Pretty much.” I cleared my throat. “This is actually a relatively simple fix, which is a good thing. So. Look where I’m pointing.”

Present Day...

“—I can get over there as soon as the sun’s outta the way,” Sam was saying as I slipped into his house and eased the door shut behind me. “Until then you’ll just have to be patient.” Sam sighed and rolled his eyes. “Look, it’s not the end of the world if you have to put off doin’ a load for a couple hours.” He paused. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll see you later. Bye.” He set his phone down.

“What was that about?” I asked.

“Vincent’s washin’ machine ain’t workin’ right. He can fix a car engine in his sleep but appliances escape him,” Sam said. “And I can’t go over and look until the sun goes down so he’s just gotta wait.”

“I can go take a look at it,” I offered.

“Darlin’—”

“What? I’m good at appliances. Good at fixing most things, really. Happens when you’re made of broken pieces yourself. I can at least go see what the problem is and then go to the store and get whatever you and I would need to fix it together.”

“I can’t ask you to do that.”

“Why? He’s like a brother to you. You’re my mate. That practically makes him my brother-in-law. And we help our family whenever we can, right?”

Sam gave me a soft look and a gentle kiss on the forehead. “I can’t stop ya even if I wanted to, can I?”

“No.”

He sighed. “Fine. Go check it out. Don’t be gone too long, though, okay?”

I smiled and kissed the corner of his mouth. “Promise. I’ll be back sooner than you think.” I slid out of his hold and dodged back toward the front door.

“Don’t fix the damn washin’ machine without me!” Sam called after me.

“No promises, cowboy!” I threw over my shoulder. “If it’s an easy fix I’ll just get it done!”

Sam caught me before I stepped into the sun. “You’re not made-a broken pieces, darlin’. Never think that for a second, ya hear?”

I gave him a melancholy look. “Maybe,” I said. I kissed him again and slid over the threshold.

I shut the front door behind me and got back on my motorcycle. I’d been to Vincent’s once, and hadn’t even gotten out of the car. But I was fairly certain I remembered how to get there.

Made much easier by being able to smell Sam’s scent along the path.

I gunned the bike and hurled down the forested road.

🐺 - Who’s more dominant?

Hmm that's a tough question. I feel like it depends highly on the situations they're in together. They both are people who don't mind letting their partner take charge in situations, especially when they are out of their depth. Their not too proud to admit that they like being taken care of and both enjoy taking a passive role at times. In general, I would say Yume is more dominant in terms of communicating and moving their relationship along initially. And in public spaces, Yume would step up and deal with things/people that Idia doesn't like to; do due to his anxiety.

And in private Yume would work with Idia and find ways for both of them to communicate with each other. Being the one to initiate a lot of mortifying talks that neither of them wants to have, but are necessary.

🏩 - Who convinces the other to go to a love hotel?

Hmm this is tough. On one hand, I could see Idia wanting to live out some daydream fantasy of going to a love hotel with Yume, but being too nervous to ask. But, I could also see Yume researching private spaces to be romantic with your loved one. (bc aha no privacy in the Ramshackle between the ghosts, Grim, their brothers, as well as the revolving door of friends.) And finding out about love hotels. Hmm, I'd say Idia brings up the idea and Yume supports it wholeheartedly after hearing him explain it. Though the day they actually go Idia gets incredibly nervous and wonders if they should just cancel, but Yume calms him down enough to go.

🩹 - Who administers first aid to their incredibly reluctant partner?

Yume is notorious for being clumsy and it isn't uncommon for a small bruise or wound to appear on Yume randomly. (Some because of their bad habit of picking their skin.)

Because of that Idia always keeps band-aids on him as a #key item. Yume tells him that is not a big deal and that it will heal up eventually, but it makes him uneasy to just leave it as is. (Big brother instincts and also some slight trauma about Ortho.*)

* I always think about these lines from Ortho's lab wear story.

Idia...gets really worried about his loved ones, so if he can do something to make sure they're okay or they heal faster he's going to do it whether they like it or not.

He is not going to repeat past mistakes. Idia definitely scolds Yume for picking their skin and for not paying attention to their surroundings, but not too much because sad Yume makes his chest hurt too!

🐜 - Who’s more terrified of bugs?

Depends on the bug. But I'd say Yume.

While I don't imagine Idia is scared of bugs in a general sense. He is SHRIEKING if something jumps at or flies at him. But if he knows it's a harmless bug he'll probably just be annoyed.

Bugs that only crawl don't scare him. Yume doesn't like BIG BUGS, SPIDERS, or things jumping or flying toward them and are disgusted/scared of being stung/bitten by anything. (They are also prone to getting bit by mosquitos pretty bad.) They are fine with harmless bugs like ladybugs, and fireflies, ect. and tolerate bees because of their services. If there is a spider in the vicinity Yume is jumping on the nearest piece of furniture. I imagine Idia feels very smug and like a great boyfriend when Yume runs to him and begs him to deal with the spider.

(Until it jumps lol.)

- TL;DR: Yume is more dominant (insert some wolf joke here), Idia convinces them to go to a love hotel &lt;3, Idia calls Yume a 'baka" while tenderly bandaging their wounds, Idia gets rid of the spiders.

A New Bad Guys Story

After watching the Bad Guys today in Liverpool, I suddenly had a new idea for the story...

Title: The Bad Guys 2: The Black Diamond of the Legendary Wolf

     they’d been walking a while now, a little slower than rev would have liked but they couldn’t blame nick, he didn’t have night vision like rev did. all the same they listened for hunter. the forest was large but so were they when they changed and could cross a huge amount of ground with a few large strides. “watch your step,” they said for nick in a bored tone as they stepped over a root sticking out of the ground without really looking down. “how you doing back there?” they then asked, stopping and turning back. they hadn’t brought a light -- rev hadn’t needed it, but nick had taken out his phone to use as a flashlight. 

     “tired yet?” rev teased before the two of them stilled hearing a deep howl within the woods. it sounded fairly far away and rev was thankful. they did not want to explain or save nick from their brother who didn’t have complete control of his inner wolf. they had both turned towards the noise, a small smile tugging at rev’s lips. they had wanted to go join him. go run around and wrestle him but the old man decided to come along. it was rev’s fault for inviting him but..

     their gaze returned to nick and they grinned, wiggling their brows, raising their hands to look like monster claws. “you’re not scared of the big bad wolf are you, gramps?”

Fafnir doesn't really like physical touch and probably hasn't had that for quite sometime.

Considering he isolated himself after turning into a dragon.

So in conclusion he would decline you.

If you had anything on you that was valuable, he would most definitely accept your hug, but expect your items to be stolen.

🔥Fenrir🐺:

It really depends on who you are to him, if you are a stranger he would most likely just ignore your request, or threaten to eat you up.

He has some very bad trust issues too, which is why he doesn't like hugging strangers. He feels uncomfortable.

Plus he really doesn't like ruining his reputation of being this scary deadly wolf that eats everything in his path.

He does on occasion hug his family and secretly really enjoys hugs. It makes his tail wag uncontrollably.

💛⚔️Freya⚔️💛:

Freya would definitely accept your hug but be a little confused on why you'd want it from her.

She tends to expect, because she's a love and beauty goddess that people would want kisses more, than hugs from her.

Which she then usually would turn down and feel offended by.

But either way, since you asked for a hug. She is happy to show some affection that way to make someone's day. She honestly she prefers hugs too.

🌈Heimdallr📯:

The answer is yes! Heimdall loves giving out hugs and pats on the backs to anyone who asks for it. Unless you're loki of course.

He finds a lot of joy in it and doesn't care if it's awkward, he in general just loves people and spending time with everyone.

Though admittedly if you were to become clingy, like physically clingy he would have to kindly ask you to stop. After all he has a job to do.

Though you continuing to be there with your presence always puts a smile on Heimdallrs face!

💛☠️Hel☠️💜:

Light Hel loves hugs more than anything and will always accept them no matter what!

She would also probably squeeze you to death accidentally too. Yes, she loves them that much.

She also loves physical touch, unlike dark Hel who despises it!

Dark Hel on the other hand, is so opposite. She despises hugs and hates it! She would much rather be violent.

💜Jormungandr🐍:

Like his siblings Jormungandr both likes hugs and dislikes them. So he would most likely not accept a hug, depending on who you are to him.

Mostly because of his huge size, I mean when you're a big serpent like him hugging a small tiny person, it wouldn't be that enjoyable.

Also because he doesn't trust anyone but his family, though it's not like they get that many hugs either. He only makes small exceptions, like to his younger brothers.

🗡️Loki🐍:

Though it's not smart to ask for a hug from this guy in the first place, he either declines you or accepts but tries to stab you.

Unless you're his family that is, he is very much like his kids not hugging anyone but his closest.

Though you'd be surprised to learn that he's secretly a very affactinate person.

Too bad his kids really don't like him in the smite universe, well expect for light hel!

⚔️Odin🐺:

Odin is a grumpy old man and doesn't like to but will exceptionally give hugs. Unless he is busy, if he's busy it's a no!

Neven though he does give out hugs time to time doesn't mean he enjoys them or really wants to.

But after all he is the All-Father! Though he finds it awkward at most. He doesn't want to make anyone upset.

In general Odin has never been the affectionate type, I mean ask his family and they'll tell you just that!

🐿Ratatoskr🌰:

Ratatoskr like Loki will either decline and probably tell you "I'm too cool to hug someone like you"

Or accept only to then try getting some information about yourself or someone else, rumors.

Anything that fills his thirst for drama, satisfies him and he'll do it.

He's also aware people will ask him for hugs because he's so cute so he'll most definitely manipulate you with that. DON'T TRUST THE RAT!

🌨Skadi❄:

Skadi has one rule, if you want to hug her you'll have to impress her. She's quite cold if you get what i mean.

She too has a little trust issues and so wouldn't just hug anyone, but doesn't see anything wrong in giving out a hug for just that simple reason you know.

She actually likes it a little, because it reminds her of the affection she had from her father before he was killed.

☀️Sol🔥:

Sol is like light hel, she just absolutely loves hugs and would accept anyone who offered one.

After being thrown into the sky with her brother Mani, she had been so starved on physical touch it just fills her with pure joy.

And fire, just remember to be careful when hugging her, she's the personification of the sun.

Her body is all fire, which is why she's also quite starved, it's not easy to end up burning up in her grip.

⚔️Surtr🔥:

It's a no sadly for you, he refuses hugs because it's as simple as "I just don't like them".

And because he's also made out of flaming hot stuff (haha get it) that could burn you and he doesn't want that.

Though he could just pat your head, after all he wears gloves. He honestly prefers that if anything.

⚡Thor🔨:

Thor unlike his father doesn't see anything wrong in a hug and accepts them!

Though be careful, the guy is quite strong and could break you in half if he's too drunk or too happy.

Besides from that he loves being affectionate! He's a big teddy bear :]

⚔️Tyr✋:

Tyr is another teddy bear! He loves hugs too and accepts them almost always, if he isn't busy that is.

Unlike Thor he knows his own strength and wouldn't want to bring anyone to harm.

So he is always gentle while giving them. Though he likes being playfully rough without actually hurting you!

⛷️Ullr🏹:

Not as fond of hugs Ullr would still accept them and even pat your head, he really doesn't mind.

It's just that he's never the one to give them, but if anyone asks of course he'll give them one!

They're also very nice to have after a long cold day, that's when he especially enjoys hugs!

He's jalso just nsecure it will be awkward if he asks for a hug, he's quite the loner and anti social person too.

Ymir might have the the mind set of a toddler but even a toddler loves a hug now and then! And he is one of them.

Ymir loves giving anyone but Odin and Thor a hug, a big one at that.

You were invited by Bob Fink to go out for a night on the town and you eagerly accepted. You had a mad crush on your coworker and thought that this was your perfect chance to finally confess your true feelings to the mysterious Bob.

You got dressed up in a gorgeous red dress complete with a red hood and cape and black Mary Janes. You admired yourself in the mirror with a smile.

"A sexy version of Red Riding Hood" You Smiled to yourself. You grabbed your purse and handbag, making your way to the door. You opened the door to be greeted by Bob Fink himself.

"Bob! Hi!" You Greeted, a blush coming to your cheeks as you stared at his handsome face.

"Hey Y/N!" Greeted Bob, his eyes roaming up and down, taking the sight of you in the dress before smirking.

"You're beautiful in that dress" Remarked Bob and you blushed even harder at his compliment.

"Thank you Bob, you look absolutely gorgeous tonight" You Replied. A pink blush came to Bob's cheeks and he chuckled.

"Aw don't make me blush!" Smiled Bob, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. You both shared a laugh together as you two headed out into the town.

It was a perfect night out. You both got drinks at the local pub, fooled around in the arcade before moving on to the next pub, grabbing a few drinks there before going to the local chippy and getting some food to snack on as the two of you made your way to next pub.

"Mmmmm....the chicken tenders are delicious" You Remarked, taking a bite out of the crispy chicken tender dipped in garlic sauce.

You watched as Bob munched on some doner meat he ordered, he was wolfing it down! You looked up to see the sky illuminated by a bright full moon.

"Wow! A full moon and it's October? Spooky time!" You Smiled as you dipped your chicken tender into the pot of garlic sauce before taking a big bite outta it.

Bob momentarily looked up to the full moon and he stared at it intensely, a strip of doner meat still caught between his teeth as continued to stare at the moon.

"Bob?" You Asked. Bob turned with an soft growl before clearing his throat to speak.

"Yeah?" Asked Bob, quickly eating the strip of meat hungrily.

"You okay?" You Asked curiously.

"Uh, yeah I'm good.....just nice moon out tonight" Replied Bob awkwardly and you chuckled.

"Well okay! Shall we walk on?" You Asked.

"Sure sure" Answered Bob and the two of you continued to walk on until you both reached the nearby wooded park. It was there you heard Bob let out a yelp in pain.

You turned just in time to see a change come over Bob, his eyes no longer blue but golden yellow like those of a wolf. His teeth had started to grow sharp along with his nails which turned to claws. He was looking like a real Wolfman and he was looking at you intensely, growling softly.

"I don't wanna hurt you Y/N, so I'm telling you now.......RUN. Run now or something bad will happen...." Growled Bob.

You instead did something that shocked him. You let out a delighted squeal and ran to him, cupping his face and staring at him with lovestruck eyes.

"Are you....a werewolf Bob?" You Asked.

"Uhhh.....yeah obviously" Replied Bob, confused.

"Oh my god I love werewolves!" You Cried.

"You do?" Asked Bob, still a little unsure.

"Oh my god yes! Werewolves are so freaking hot!" You Cried excitedly. Bob seemed to grow more confident, giving you a toothy wolfish grin.

"So, Little Red Riding Hood likes Big Bad Wolves does she?" Smirked Bob. You gave him a flirty wink.

"Maybe she does" You Replied.

"Well, I'm the Big Bad Wolf of London and you Red Riding Hood are looking very gorgeous tonight" Smirked Bob, slowly backing you up against the tree.

"Why Mr. Wolf, what big eyes you have!" You Exclaimed.

"All the better to see you with my dear" Replied Bob.

"Why Mr. Wolf, what big ears you have!" You Exclaimed.

Feral Terry proves that he has those wolf vibes… and Daniel gets to be his little red riding hood… Terry can’t let such a sweet boy be alone, there are bad things out there, and he should be there to protect Daniel. And Daniel, so sweet and naive, trusts Terry and lets this wolf guide him, take him on the right path… they fit a little red and big bad wolf dynamic so well…

I have always wanted to write this literally as in werewolf Terry and red riding hood Daniel, so I did below. 🐺 If this isn’t what you wanted, I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist this dark fairytale drabble though! Definitely more like a prequel though.)

Last summer, Daniel moved to a new village with his mother where he befriended Mr. Miyagi, a laborer at the tavern who once fought as a soldier in a war. He took Daniel under his wing after the local kids bullied him and trained him in the art of karate, a style of hand-to-hand combat from a kingdom in a faraway land. But as the leaves began to fall and autumn arrived, Mr. Miyagi announced he would be returning to his home on the other side of the forest. Daniel was upset to see his new friend and mentor leave but ultimately decided to go with him. After eighteen winters, he still lacked a trade, and his mentor could teach him something useful beyond combat. Daniel’s mother agreed as long as he returned in the spring, and they left his village the next morning.

His first night at Mr. Miyagi's was difficult. He missed his mother and their home, his new bed was uncomfortably small, and apparently. His new roommate was a snorer. But most of all, a strange noise kept Daniel up at night, a low growling sound and huffs of air. But he was too afraid to investigate in fear that something, or someone, was truly outside waiting for him, a great danger he was not ready to face. Though Daniel convinced himself it was all in his head and kept quiet about the nightmare.

The next night was the same, only worse.

A strange silhouette accompanied the sound, passing the shuttered window several times but moving too fast to identify. Whatever it was strayed longer this time too. It waited to leave until just before the sun came up, and Daniel got no sleep all night.

In the morning, he finally asked Mr. Miyagi what was going on, hoping for a simple answer. Maybe an animal from the forest, like a raccoon or a deer, was trying to steal from their garden. But Mr. Miyagi didn’t explain, only offered a warning.

“Do not enter woods at night, Daniel-san.” 

It was terrifying and shook Daniel to his core. Since they became friends, nothing seemed to scare Mr. Miyagi, not even the high cliffs or the dark depths of the ocean. He knew to take the word of caution to heart but couldn’t help but feel confused. They had no trouble traveling through the woods during the day. That’s how they got from Daniel’s village to Mr. Miyagi’s, and he eventually had to return soon. But his mentor reassured him there was no reason to worry, as long as he stayed inside after the sun went down.

The next night was the same, but unlike the past few days, Mr. Miyagi stayed awake with him. This didn’t stop their adventures. After a silent breakfast, they visited the nearby town where Mr. Miyagi met up with his family. After briefly meeting them, Daniel left his mentor to explore the market square on his own. There were shops lining the stone-covered streets, selling food, leather, fur, and other merchandise produced by the locals. What caught Daniel’s attention the most was all the weapons being sold, something his own village lacked.

That’s where he met the local woodsman. Standing in front of the blacksmith shop was a tall man with long brown hair pulled back behind his head, wearing an all-black tunic and trousers with stitched-up leather boots. Daniel was inspecting a lance for sale when the man beside him first spoke. He asked what his purpose was for buying weapons, and Daniel described the situation, hoping the stranger would have some insight.

The man nodded at him after listening to his story. “I’m afraid I can’t help you,” declared the stranger. “I’ve lived and worked in these woods for many years, and nothing like that has ever happened to me.”

Daniel was shocked to hear this as Mr. Miyagi claimed his house was the only one around for miles, but the man had no reason to lie and offered an explanation. “It’s possible your mentor is mistaken. My house is far beyond the trees and easy to miss if you’re not looking.”

It made sense when he thought about it, and after a few more pleasantries, they exchanged names. But eventually, the blacksmith returned a newly-sharpened ax to the woodsman named Terry, and he informed Daniel that he had to go now that his weapon was fixed. He suggested Terry drop by Mr. Miyagi’s home and visit him some time, which the woodsman agreed to do. soon.

But Terry didn’t leave without first inquiring with Daniel about his garb. “Where did you get your red cloak?” he asked. Daniel laughed and said his mother made it for him many years ago so he would be easy to spot in a crowd. Terry agreed the red made him very visible, and he departed from Daniel with the ax slung over his back. Mr. Miyagi took him back home a few hours later, and on the way, he told him about meeting Terry, a man who claimed to live in the woods. His mentor seemed skeptical but didn’t say much else.

Daniel tried to stay positive that night and was pleasantly surprised. The noise occurred again, along with a familiar shadow, but did not stay long. He got a few hours of sleep before waking the next morning to something worse than a mysterious sound. When he opened the front door to begin his daily chores, a shout left his mouth involuntarily.

Waiting for him on Mr. Miyagi’s front porch was an animal carcass of a sheep or some type of deer. It was too mangled to tell, and Daniel felt sick. There were no puncture wounds from a knife or a sword, only slashes and bites. For a second, Daniel was hopeful. Perhaps the horrible nightly routine would be ending. But he turned to Mr. Miyagi who looked as if he had seen a ghost.

“What’s wrong?” Daniel asked.

His mentor frowned at him. “Hope it is not what I fear,” Mr. Miyagi whispered.

Daniel inhaled sharply. “What do you fear, Mr. Miyagi?”

“Beast has found mate.” 

His words were confusing. Nothing Mr. Miyagi was saying made sense. When Daniel told him as much, his teacher brought him back inside and sat him down.

“Time to learn truth about danger in woods,” he said. 

But even before Mr. Myagi began his story, Daniel’s first thought was if Terry knew about all this too. He would have to visit the woodsman later and share.

       "Uh."  There  is  a  weird  silence  from  watching  the  kid  utter  those  words  up  front  to  him  like  that.  Well,  it  was  surely  a  way  to  say,  "Hello".

       "...you  sure  you  mean  that?"  He  asked,  tilting  his  head  with  one  hand  on  the  back  of  his  neck.  "That's,  uh...  y'know,  a  lot  to  throw  out  there.  You  don't  even  say  'hello'?  Not  even,  'That's  a  good  opinion  but  I  have  my  own  opinions  and  I  still  hear  yours'?"
