Shipping Out

Curly has kinda taken over my mind for almost the past week so hi, it's time for me to make everyone see how much I'm obsessed with him now. This is set mainly pre-canon, though with the last bit being post-canon

Lyra always hates waking up the mornings that Curly is about to ship out for a delivery. As her eyes blink open, she stares up at the ceiling, half wishing that she could go back to sleep. If she stays asleep, she won’t have to see him go— though that also means missing out on a last goodbye. She knows she can’t just go back to sleep, not when it would mean that she could lose valuable time with her boyfriend right before he’s away for over a year. 

Curly shifts in bed, the blankets twisting around him. It sounds like he’s awake— unsurprising given that he usually has trouble sleeping. The feeling of his lips and stubble against Lyra’s cheek further wakes her up, and she blinks sleepily over at him. 

Curly always looks cute when he’s just woken up. His mane of blond hair is a mess of loose curls, sticking up at odd angles but still tantalizing soft to the touch. Though he's still mostly covered by the blankets, as he shifts around Lyra can see a bit of his bare chest, which is always another pleasant sight to see early in the morning. He lays his arm over her stomach, giving her another kiss on the jaw. 

“Good morning,” he greets, his voice low and rough with sleep. 

“Morning,” Lyra replies. 

She’s not sure how good it will be when she knows Curly will leave in a couple of hours. But there’s nothing that can be done on that front. Money has to be made, and they both have jobs that they need to do. Still the fact that for the almost three years the two have dated, less than a year and a half of that has been spent when both of them are able to physically be together is hard. 

Curly’s a good captain, of that Lyra can be sure, but she hates how much time his delivery trips take from them, and she can’t help but wish that he could find some other job, one that will keep him on Earth with her. Every time they part is hard, even if she knows that they’ll be able to pick up where they left off as soon as he’s back. And lately it hasn’t seemed like Curly’s happy with the job, he just doesn’t know what else he could do.

There’s no time for Lyra to start coming up with other job possibilities for Curly though, at least not right now. So instead she asks, “You take off at eleven, right?”

“But I’ll need to make sure I get to the Tulpar by ten for any last minute prep,” he says.

Lyra glances at the clock on her nightstand. It’s 7:36— they won’t have much time.

“So we’ve got a bit less than two a half hours,” she says. 

Curly tucks a bit of hair behind her ear, a bit of sadness lingering in his eyes. It’s at least nice to know that he hates leaving her as much as she does. “I’m going to miss you, star.”

“I’ll miss you too,” Lyra says. 

She’ll miss him every day. She always does when he goes out on trips like this, but this one will be even longer than usual. It’s not like the two of them won’t be able to interact with each other from time to time— the Tulpar can send and receive messages, and as captain he’ll be able to send letters to her. But that’s not the same as having him here with her, of having him buried under the blankets in bed with her, of being able to feel his steady heartbeat in his chest. 

“I’ll take you out to the best dinner I can afford when I come back,” Curly promises. “And you’ll have to tell me about every story you’ve written since I left.”

“Sounds nice,” Lyra says. 

“It will be. And I’m sure I’ll have stories from the trip for you too,” he says. 

“Who all’s with you for this one again?”

“The usual crew, and Jimmy’s co-piloting again. We’ve also got an intern this time.” Curly sighs, looking up at the ceiling. “I should have pushed them to make sure the Tulpar’s ready for five people, but they sprung that on me last week. We might need to be a little more conservative with the food— at least we shouldn’t need to worry about using any of the cryo pods.”

Lyra frowns. “They really should have given you more stuff if they were going to do that last minute. I don’t want you all starving.”

“We’ll be fine. This will be longer than usual, but it’s nothing too far out of the ordinary for us to handle,” Curly assures. 

“I hope so. But you really need to speak up for yourself more, especially on stuff like this that could make things harder for everyone,” she says. 

Lyra thinks he could apply that same logic to Jimmy too. She’s never liked him much, not when he’s always making rude comments to Curly. Him complaining about how much harder his life is than Curly’s is why Curly even helped him get this job, as if it’s his fault that Jimmy’s irresponsible and skilled at ruining his own life. She’s sure part of it comes from jealousy— that would help explain some of the looks he would give her too— but either way, she can only barely tolerate him for Curly’s sake. 

“I know,” Curly says. He presses a quick kiss to her shoulder. 

“You’re very affectionate this morning,” Lyra notes. Not that she minds— it’s always flattering when Curly gets sweet with her like this.

“I have about two and a half hours to get in a year’s worth of kisses for you,” he replies.

“That’ll be a lot of kisses.”

“It will.” He gives her another kiss, this time on the side of her neck.

“Maybe you should split them up. Give me half up front, half when you get back.”

“Is that going to be enough to hold you over?” Curly asks. He traces a couple more light kisses down her neck, going from her jaw to her collarbone. 

“I’ll be able to make do.” Lyra has to be able to. It’s going to be a long year, but the thought of getting to be with Curly again later will hopefully help her get through it. “But I’m expecting a several hour long make out session with you when you get back.”

“I might be able to do that,” he says with a laugh. “For now, though…”

He turns her face towards his, one hand on her cheek. Then he leans closer, kissing the beauty mark just below her left eye. 

“That one’s for my lucky star that'll guide me home,” Curly says, planting another quick kiss there. “On my favorite constellation.”

Lyra smiles, holding him close. She wishes that she never had to let him go, that she could keep him in this moment with her forever. But life always seems to manage to get in the way. All she can do is enjoy what little time they have left together before he has to leave. 

“I love you,” Lyra says. 

Curly grins, repositioning to line himself up on top of her. The tip of his nose brushes against hers, and even through the dark she can see the brilliant blue of his eyes. “I love you too.”

“Do you want some coffee before you head out?”

“Please. We always run out fast on the ship.”

Lyra squeezes Curly tight in her arms, soaking up every moment of intimacy she can with him before he has to leave. 

“Then let’s see if I can get you up and running,” she says. 

Lyra gets the call during her lunch break. She takes her meal out of the microwave, leaving it on the counter when her phone starts ringing. She picks it up without thinking, expecting nothing more than a telemarketer or reminder to pick up her prescriptions from the drug store. 

“Hi, is this Lyra Pastore?” the person on the phone asks. 

She tucks the phone between her ear and her shoulder. “Yeah, that’s me.”

“I’m calling from Saint Mercy’s hospital. Grant Curly had you listed as his emergency contact.”

Lyra’s heart plummets in her chest. Curly’s not supposed to be back for another two months. If he’s not only back early but also in the hospital, that must mean something horrible happened. Her mind races to what could have happened— maybe whatever they were transporting was dangerous and reacted poorly to being carried out into space, maybe the ship wasn’t able to handle the extra crew member and they started running out of resources so everyone nearly starved to death. Maybe something even worse happened. Whatever it is, it has to be bad if they’re calling her. 

“Ms. Pastore?” the person on the phone asks, snapping her out of her racing thoughts. 

“Is— is he alright?” Lyra manages to force out. Her throat is so tight she can barely get out the words, anxiety grasping tight around her at the thought of what might have happened to him. 

“We need you to make some medical decisions on his behalf. Is it possible for you to come today to consult with the doctors?” they say instead of answering. 

“Yeah. Yeah, I can.” Lyra takes a breath, hoping to force back tears at the thought of what could have happened to Curly. “I’ll be there soon as possible.”

Adrian draped a blanket over his wife’s shoulders. He hadn’t bothered to ask if she was cold, he knew. And if she asked, she would deny it, and it would take them another 20 minutes to end up right were they were now.

“Oh! Thank you.” [Y/N] grinned up at him as Adrian sat back down beside her. The cold not nearly as much of an issue for him. “Here. You have some too.” She still offered and draped a corner of it over his shoulder. “Do you know what that one is?”

“Canes Venatici.” He answered.

“And that one?”

“Lyra.”

“And that one?”

Adrian’s eyes moved to the new direction her finger was pointing, “that’s just a bunch of stars.”

“They’re all just a bunch of stars.” [Y/N] argued with him. Then pouted when he said not all of them got names. “That seems unfair.”

Adrian chuckled. Then pulled his wife into his lap with her blanket to give her a kiss. Of course she, of all people, would feel bad for stars for not having names. “How about we name them? I’ll keep track.”

-Berat has trust issues, so they’ll come off as rude sometimes (Apologies if they do). The reason why Berat has trust issues is because Rian introjected their trust issues onto Berat

-Anya, Myst, Berat, Lyra, Macula/🌘🕯️, Venus/🌶️🔥, Iapetus, Dione, and Enceladus/❄️🌫️ will snap if it's necessary (Things that can cause them to snap: Dismissing trauma, sending threats, harassment, purposefully triggering someone)

-Rian, Berat, Kamaria, Comet/☄️🌕, Europa/🧊🌒, and Callisto/🌑☁️ are insecure

-Nova/🦇🔥 tends to say “motherfuckers” a lot, this isn't Nova being mean! Nova is just excited and can't contain it

-Rian’s very insecure about their art, so please be careful when you're expressing your opinions about their art
