Today, a public building! Which means I don't have to redact the address marker :D This beautiful temple is called 浄円寺 Jōen-ji, or Jōen Temple.

浄 is new to this blog! It means to clean, cleanse, purify, or exorcise. It's read きよ.める, きよ.い, ジョウ, or セイ. The radicals are 氵water and 争 struggle, which... yeah, accurate description of cleaning.

円 is new too! It means circle, round, or yen/JPY. It's read まる.い, まる, まど, まど.か, まろ.やか, or エン.

We've previously covered 丸い [まるい] as meaning round. The difference is that 丸 generally applies tor three-dimensional or spherical round objects, and 円 to flat or circle-like round objects. (The adjective 円い exists, but I think it's pretty rare... but that could be a blind spot on my part!)

寺 is not new but we covered it so long ago that it might as well be. It means (Buddhist) temple. It's read てら or ジ.

It can be hard to tell apart Buddhist and Shintō places of worship on sight, but the name is the key. If it ends in 寺 [read てら, -でら, or じ], that means it's Buddhist, whereas Shintō shrine names end with 神社 [じんじゃ], or 社 [しゃ or やしろ], or 宮 [usually ぐう or みや].
