“Emma or Lucy. That's the problem. Focusing on the female characters of the Popular Theatre musical.” an essay by “7호선의 연뮤덕 Theatre Fan on Line 7″, translated and edited by me (let me know if there’s any mistakes).
If you were to divide countless Popular Theatre musicals into two types, why not divide them into two categories: a performance where men are the main characters and a performance where women are the main characters. In a way, the reason for this dichotomous classification is not to analyze the main character. It is about the supporting character next to the main character, or the love interest/s that supports the main character.
The male character in the female show stands out much at this particular intersection. “엘리자벳 Elisabeth’s” Der Tod is as charming and significant as Elisabeth is. “아이다 Aida’s” Radames and “위키드 Wicked’s” Fiyero are also quite good characters. They have good musical numbers, there are always roles like them guaranteed, and almost always have persuasive settings. Shows such as “마리 앙투아네트 Marie Antoinette” and the original Korean musical “마타 하리 Mata Hari” also guarantees that the male supporting characters have depth; with solid character arcs and songs too.
On the other hand, female characters in male-centered Popular Theatre show can be distinctly classified. It’s a taxonomy we all know–would you be in a red skirt or in a white skirt?–Lucy and Emma. For a while, it seemed like the only option for female characters in Popular Theatre.
Will you be Emma in a white skirt?
First, let's talk about the typical Emma character. She always supports the male lead. But they never discuss or are included in the great work or problem at hand. Instead, she gives a warm smile. Her personality is gentle and angelic. The charm of her character is seen only though her beauty. Most of the major character development ends there. Lucie Manette from “두 도시 이야기 A Tale of Two Cities”, Julia from the original Korean musical “프랑켄슈타인 Frankenstein”, Mina Murray from “드라큘라 Dracula”, and 이선화 Lee Sun Hwa from “윤동주, 달을 쏘다 Yoon Dong Joo, shoot for the Moon” are typical Emma characters. The goal of their character is to make the male character happy or to win the love of the male protagonist. There are also Emmas with a little bit of variation. “셜록홈즈 Sherlock’s” Lucy, “킹아더 King Arthur’s” Guinevere, Fleur-de-Lys from “노트르담 드 파리 Notre Dame de Paris” and others are among the anomalies.
The male protagonist is in love for this Emma-type of woman and is also in trouble with the choice he made because of her. And women, happily connected with such men, make noble sacrifices for them. The problem with the character lies here. Whilst wearing a white skirt, this myriad of “Emmas” are not given much. You can see this easily when you compare Fersen from “Marie Antoinette” and Radames from “Aida”. Fersen is a “supporting” role in “Marie Antoinette”. Despite that, his character’s psychology and his narrative voice is expanded upon and has a great influence on the story. Earlier in the show, he is frustrated with Marie Antoinette about her lack of willingness to see beyond the palace walls, and by the end came to try to save her when she was at the mercy of the rioting people.
What about “Aida’s” Radames? The pillar that holds up the musical “Aida” is the love story between Aida, Radames and Amneris. Radames was given numerous duets and solo songs central to the plot. When I watch “Aida” a thought comes to me. “Had Radames been a female character, would he have appeared as many times as he does in the show? Could he have showcased the character’s unique colour so actively?”
Yes, unlike Fersen and Radames, Emma’s characters are heavily dependent on character plots that are impossible to undertake without the explanation of a male character. There are also a number of Emma-type characters that are stripped of all femininity if they’re given a decent level of influence in the show.
The male main character often goes on a journey both physically, emotionally and mentally as a result of extreme instability. Emma’s character is portrayed as a place the male lead can return to and acts as an indicator of stability. They are praised for being noble and nothing else. Emma’s character is just something that exists in service of being compassionate to the man when he is in “pain”. Since the use of the character is set, the character cannot move naturally, and therefore the story becomes weak. No, the male character never intends to spend too much time with Emma’s character in the first place. They usually sing a couple of songs with him, some where they watch him mournfully and yet calmly. No, I’m glad at least they get to have a solo number. In extreme cases they don’t appear after act one and only come out for the curtain call. So, Emma’s character exists in the show as a “tool”.
“A woman who loves the male protagonist, a pure soul." She is beautiful in appearance and has wisdom to spare. She’s always encouraging the male character.”
Perhaps the profile photos of the actress in the role is looking at the camera with both hands clasped or on her heart or daintily in the air. We’ve seen this so much we don’t even have to know who the character is to recognise the role.
Even this Emma-type character also appears in the female lead musical. She stands in opposition to Lucy, another lead character who utilises her irresistible charm. This saint and prostitute dynamic can and is still being used even when the main character is a woman. “카르멘 Carmen” follows this arrangement. Jose is a greedy man in pursuit of Carmen, a passionate woman. But Jose already has his angelic fiance, Catarina, next to him. Life with Catarina is peaceful and comfortable. And it's safe. Jose is at odds with his passionate and dangerous love for Carmen and his peaceful life with Catarina. And as everyone can expect, Jose chooses Carmen.
It's a female lead show, but in this musical, Catarina is not even directly involved with Carmen. Catarina has only one role in this show. “Jose will be taken away from her by Carmen, thus proving Carmen’s stronger charm and passion in those scenes”. Catarina is also abducted by Carmen’s ex at one point, further turning her into a damsel in distress who has to be “saved,” with Carmen’s death being to save the “pure” one. It’s a harsh role.
Emma's characters generally have less impact than Lucy's as illustrated in Carmen. In a later production of “Frankenstein”, the creatives deleted Julia’s only solo number which was about her waiting for Victor. Without even having to delete the song, Julia’s character is already erratic, making it difficult for most audiences to keep up with what she’s thinking. And in the midst of this problem, the song was cut and solidified that her only purpose in the show was to be a quaint and dutiful “Victorian” bride. Even the production did not respect her character.
Will you be Lucy in a red skirt?
So, is Lucy's character better treated? At first glance, Lucy's character looks freer than Emma's. She speaks quite well and says what she wants to say.
There are also certain numbers that carry a motif that signals that they too yearn for the instinct and desire that male characters are given. Lucy-type characters who come and go on stage wearing red skirts and heavy makeup definitely stand out more. Their performance and character is however still definitely tied strongly to love. This long-running production loves the hardships of Lucy’s character as a “woman”, and performs in the world of the show only to be praised by the male character, which turns her “pure” in front of him. She has appeared in many works because of this preposition. So, does Lucy’s character function properly? And as just a person too?
She definitely has more musical numbers than Emma’s character. The business establishment that most Lucy-type characters appear in are of the vibrant rhythm and the colourful mise en scene of a cabaret or the red light district, and they are the character that leads this number that introduces the audience to her world.
She also has more complex pain than Emma-type characters. Specifically, the pitfalls of women in the lower classes that are hurt by an unspecified number of men. She falls in love with the male main character who is distinctly different from other well-manned men she’s met before. And at the forefront of this relationship is the “purity” aspect. That is why it is not as noble as an Emma-type character’s love, but comes across as mournful. Painful songs, fiery love with male characters, and heartfelt sincerity create misunderstandings that make the character appealing. Here we have a question. Can we say that the character has any real depth?
In conclusion, it is hard to say if Lucy's character has depth. They’re criticised for not living an honest life (that doesn’t require selling their bodies) but aren’t allowed to achieve anything that they dream of. Lucy's character should only accept the pain that her "red skirt" gives. She shouldn't enjoy it or be ambitious, or for her to be taken seriously. Because in a male-dominated society, Lucy's character is an "unsophisticated" femme fatale. She is a woman that seduces men and takes advantage of them. By making Lucy's character attractive and having her sing an irresistible number, the play rationalises male characters' wishes and immoral acts. And all responsibility for the fiery love affair between a prostitute and a reserved man is placed solely onto the woman, or in this case, Lucy.
Take Polly from “젝 더 리퍼 Jack the Ripper”. Polly, who has lived in a lighthouse near the harbour, is described as an unhappy and gloomy woman. Polly's role in the drama, in which she lives an ill-fated life under the influence of drugs, is to end a lonely love story that doesn't work with Anderson and become a decoy to catch the Ripper. Yes, Detective Anderson sings a desperate song and then writes down Polly, our Lucy-type character, as bait to catch him.
Esmeralda in “Notre Dame de Paris” is also a modified Lucy character. The modifier that describes Esmeralda is her “beauty”. These different men, fascinated by beauty and naivety, praise Esmeralda's charm. Male characters say that it is inevitable that they are hooked onto Esmeralda. Because Esmeralda is a pretty traveling woman. These men make Esmeralda the reasons for their immoral conduct. And Esmeralda suffers without any fault and ends up dying. Compared to Esmeralda's desperate role, the number that represents Esmeralda's feelings and psychology is definitely passive.
The most important thing in Lucy's character is that they should be beautiful. The character cannot be described as anything other than “beautiful” and “fatal”. Because her small charms and a powerfully belted song are the product of her appearance.
Perhaps this is how character descriptions go.
“A woman who owns sensual and deadly charms but hides great pain inside. She longs for a new life after meeting the male lead.”
A pornographic display of Lucy's character
One more problem follows Lucy's character. This is a problem in the show that comes from her background as a “prostitute”, a character attribute that will follow Lucy's character for life. For many a production, there are scenes displayed that show the sexual harrasment or rape of a woman without pretense onstage. It is also questionable whether these scenes are necessary as a component in the show, and there are always problems when recreating such scenes.
For example, “Frankenstein’s” Katherine has a great solo song, the number is called “산다는 거 What It Means To Live“ wherein the actress can sing with complex expressions accompanied by an anger and sadness that drives her whole body. However, the role of Katherine in the the story is disastrous. She exists only as a sacrifice to awaken the monster of Victor’s making. Because of the character’s narrative, the male director brought up a keyword “윤간 gang rape/gang bang”. Is there nothing that awaits a woman who falls from grace other than rape? Even if you look at Katherine’s hard life, it never seemed to be the natural progression.
The audience had changed by then [in lieu of the me too movement in Korea] and the feminists’ criticisms of the story were acknowledged. Although the rape scene remains, it has been modified to imply that a gang rape had taken place without explicitly showing the act onstage. But was this really the solution?
Unfortunately, at this moment in time, problems continue to arise because of the nature of the story being told. [Even though it’s been minimised] the only reason why Katherine falls from grace is because someone has to be the victim of “윤간 gang rape“ and she just happened to be chosen. And on another note, the keyword “윤간 gang rape“, which explained the validity of the character’s anger, was removed from the production altogether [and instead euphemisms were put in place].
From the actress' perspective, it is natural to express the character's emotions as thoroughly as she can to best convey the narrative. With great anguish, the audience watches her shake uncontrollably as she crawls on her hands and knees to convince them of her character’s deteriorating emotional state from having been sexually harassed, and finally being stripped of her dignity as a person. Is this the actress’ fault? Absolutely not. The actress acts this way because she needs to convince the audience to care for such a one-note character. And the problem is that it is displayed bare and stark in front of a packed audience.
The silence that echoes through the shivering actress after being gang raped is devastating. The more realistically the actress acts in the scene the more pornographic it becomes. The show characterises Katherine’s gang rape as “punishment” or just as a “hardship” that one has to go through and reduces it to pain porn.
Then what can we do? Even if you minimise the gang rape scene there is still the problem of the implication it happened. The answer is easy. It doesn’t have to end in gang rape. We can change how she falls into the abyss without using gang rape as a reason. The director, especially the male director, owes it all to the female characters to do better. Even now, you must look at female characters as worthy of having a solid characterisation or to have some influence on narrative at all. We can quickly shed this complacency towards female characters and have a creative attitude towards them.
Lucy or Emma. Characters who don’t end up being seen as “people”.
In the end, Emma and Lucy both fail to have proper personal narratives in male-dominated narratives. Ironically, Emma and Lucy are praised for sacrificing themselves for the male protagonist or waiting until the end for a promise with him. And if not for that, they are also praised for one last reason.
Their beauty. It is the one other thing that Emma and Lucy have in common. Their character can be summarised by their kind of beauty. Emma is valued as a “beautiful lover” who quietly charms the person she’s in love with. Lucy, on the other hand, causes her grief and pain through her beauty as “a woman who shows of her irresistible charm”. If the narrative and depth of a female character cannot be explained outside of their relationship with a man or their beauty, can it be said that they are even a character at all?
