So, the current show I'm watching in between waiting for "Sha Hai" every week and waiting for "The Rise of Phoenixes" to air on Netflix is Wu Lei's new series "Battle Through the Heaven" (鬥破蒼穹) AKA "Fights Break Sphere" (斗破苍穹). It is a Zhong Er (中二) show, adolescents/teenager show.

Yes, it is, but it is also THE CLOSEST LIVE ACTION SHONEN SERIES I HAVE SEEN. I have seen four eps so far and the pacing for this show has been brisk, and I love it to tiny bits.

Wu Lei stars as Xiao Yan, son of Xiao Zhan (hilarious dad) and Gu Wenxin (his late kickass mother). Xiao Yan was a prodigy at the age nine, able to unlock his inner gongfu / power to an insane level. The same year his mother committed suicide to protect their family and to protect her old Master and some sort of super duper powerful treasure from being taken/discovered by evil villain that has probably taken over some of the Five Families.

Before his mother's death she gave him a ring to wear on his left thumb and made him promise to always wear it and protect it from harm. It was also around here that Xiao Yan's prodigious inner strength started to dwindle and disappear. Oh, and his father destroyed his own inner gongfu to avoid conflict with the other Families, and basically remove himself from the political shit show. I love his dad.

Yeah, it was a shit year.

Anyways, fast track 7 years, Xiao Yan's martial art has made no progress due to a lack of inner gongfu. Through some mishap Xiao Yan ends up falling unconscious and appearing inside the ring. Yes, the ring he has been wearing for 7 years. The ring that houses Yao Chen, Xiao Yan's mother's former Master, also the undefeated powerhouse that apparently died 7 years ago on the same mission his mother came back from and committed suicide to protect its secrets. Yeah. And to insult to injury the reason Xiao Yan has not made any progress is because Yan Chen has been leeching all of his energy for reasons I'm not sure yet.

After some shouting and getting his ass handed to him Xiao Yan ends up learning from Yao Chen. He wants to find the bad guy who caused his mother's death, joined a martial arts academy (where I'm currently at), and from friends who has read the novel basically powers up to fight evil.

I love this show, so far, because the pacing is super fast. It doesn't drag plot points out, and no matter what a shitty deal Xiao Yan gets he always work through his angst fast and is ready to tackle the problem head on. Xiao Yan is a decent kid, relatively smart and isn't so prideful that he won't ask for help. He wants to avenge his mother, and will protect the ring and Yan Chen because his mother asked him to and also sacrificed her own life to do the same thing. He treat others well but is perfectly happy giving what he he gets.

There isn't any over the top romance, some hints of tiny crushes and a failed arranged marriage. It is just about this kid trying to get powerful to avenge his mum and maybe save the world. There appears to be a whole host of characters that are just starting to take shape, and I'm here for the ride!

Also, excellent fight choreogprhay and directing. And re CGI is pretty decent.

OK, so there are several amazing Chinese dramas out now that I basically howl about ether here or on discord or somewhere in the void. But the show that has actually brought me joy this week, uncomplicated no angst joy is "Battle Through the Heaven" (斗破苍穹/鬥破蒼穹) starring Wu Lei.

Supposedly this show has been getting bad reviews, which confuse me. Because look, it is based on action/wu xia/fantasy online novel about a teenager that becomes all powerful. It is a fantastical power fantasy, what the fuck were people expecting? I know there are a lot of butt-hurt book fans but seriously get the fuck over it. Out of all of the live action adaption of online novels we got in recent years this show, so far, has been quality.

Disclaimer, I'm not a romance genera fan. I especially detest Asian romance dramas, because 9 out of 10 times leads in these dramas become complete and utter dipshits and idiots once in love. And I just can't handle watching 20 to 60+ eps of will they or won't they, or all the dog blood events to drag things out more.

I watch police dramas / wu xia / fantasy and apparently qidian now. And I like the romance that happens naturally as part of a show without stupidly created drama whose sole purpose is to drag shit out.

What I like about 斗破苍穹 is that it doesn't drag things out. It knows what it is, and it is aware of its tropes. The first two eps are choppy but I appreciate it very much when we can get through about 10 eps worth of material that we all know anyway in the span of two. It doesn't try to drag out suspense because it know that's not what it is. The show is about a kid called Xiao Yan trying to become powerful so to gain revenge for his mother and save the world. The plot is fast paced, faster than any Chines drama I have seen in decades, the action is excellent, the CGI decent. But the thing that's best about this show is its main character Xiao Yan.

Wu Lei's Xiao Yan is kind and smart. He angers fast and forgives easily. He is aware of context of a given situation and will try to act accordingly. He is prideful but not overly, willing to ask for help when needed. He tries not to boast but he knows what he can do (most of the time). And he is just so damn optimistic.

I'm seven eps in, and I feel like I'm watching a well crafted shounen fight series but without the fucking flashbacks, bad animation or a lead that's too dumb to live. I'm just having so much fun.

And honestly, it is kind of the show I'm most excited for next week.

Oh, and the SOUNDTRACK!!! It is so different! I love it.

ETA: I can't believe Wu Lei is the lead for two highly popular series at the same time. And I'd argue Li Cu and Xiao Yan is distinctive enough to be impressive. I'm really excited about his future, especially since he got into the Beijing Performance Arts university.

如今的國漫如雨後春筍般出現，不管長篇還是短篇，作品越來越多，而且3D動漫似乎佔領了國漫界大半江山，當然2D國漫也還是有很多的。今天來聊聊那些有生之年的國漫作品！

 第一部：《鬥破蒼穹》

 不老不結局的三部國漫，鬥破完結需要10年？

之所以叫有生之年的國漫，是因為製作週期實在是有點太長了！甚至比起火影和海賊這些從小看到大的日漫，都有過之而無不及！《鬥破蒼穹》當之無愧，因為它又處於停更狀態了！第四季都雖然是24集連播，但是三年之約等了四年的節奏，也是讓不少觀眾無力吐槽了！而根據原著的節奏，想要看到大結局恐怕要等很久很久了，因此《鬥破蒼穹》被稱之為有生之年動漫，那都是樂觀的推測了！

 第二部：《秦時明月》

按照目前的劇情進度，劇情還是非常的水，並且現在連主線都沒有進入，像天明和月兒、少羽這一夥人都是沒看到，可想而知現在主線都沒進去，也是很難看快速的看到大結局的。

 第三部：《鬥羅大陸》

 不老不結局的三部國漫，鬥破完結需要10年？

鬥羅的更新速度應該是最快的了，但是劇情還是很長的，按照現在的時長來看，想要快點看到大結局，那也是一件難事的，因此，要說有生之年的動漫的話，那《鬥羅大陸》也肯定得入選。

以上三部可以說是比較火的作品了，而當你去看原著的目錄，發現後面的路還有很長很長很長很長…………的時候，心中難免歎息：可能等我老掉牙的時候，結局就來了吧！
