A great jōyō kanji name that's also an animal name! 井守 is read Imori, and it's also one way to write newt, particularly Japanese fire-bellied newt. (Another way is 蠑螈, and in scientific contexts, it would usually be written イモリ in katakana.)
井 gets covered constantly on this blog. It means well (where you get water from) or town/community. It’s read read い, セイ, or ショウ.
守 is a character we introduced quite recently. It means to protect, defend, guard, or obey. It can be read まも.

Continue reading Untitled

Hi! I've just a couple hours back used your method of making BNHA OC names and it was incredibly useful, thank you very much for that~! But I'm coming on a slight issue based on how the name looks and sounds. My character's quirk is Axolotl, making her have the appearance of a humanoid axolotl and being able to do pretty much anything it can do! And I came up with the name Iyeren Imoriike (癒韌 蠑池), Iyeren being a given name meaning healing, cure; strong, resilient (1/2)
Hello!
I’m glad you found my guide useful. The name looks very good! I think you might just be feeling like it doesn’t sound like a real name, which is understandable given how these names are made. So some suggestions (you don’t have to follow them of course):
癒韌 “Iyeren”
Firstly you should probably know that “ye” isn’t a sound/character in Japanese--you can kinda get it by going “いぇ” (technically “ie” but the “e” is tiny, it’s a way of writing/reading some combination sounds in Japanese, but it normally that method is only used for “ya/yu/yo” sounds--though it’s used a lot more with different vowels in modern times because of loan words, but that’s a tangent so I’ll move on now). “韌” using “ren” as a reading is also unusual in Japanese, though it IS a non-onyomi Chinese hanji reading, so I think you might be using a Chinese hanji reading for both of these kanji actually? That might also be contributing to why the name feels off. (Unless your character is actually Chinese! In which case, the name is probably fine as is!)
Anyway, traditionally, “癒” is read is “ie” (no little e) or “iya”, so you might want to spell it as “Iyaren” (unless you’re planning on doing “Iyeren” on purpose). Alternatively, you can read “癒” as “yu”. Using that, you get “Yuren”, and Yuren is an actual given feminine name, but it’s spelled with different kanji normally.
If you wanna change up that “韌“ reading, instead of “ren” (the Chinese hanji reading), you can read it in Japanese as “shinaya”, “jin/zin”, or “nin”.
So, basically if you wanna keep those kanji, you can pick any combination of those readings to make it sound more Japanese, like for example “Yujin” or “Iyanin”. Alternatively, of course, you can always turn to kirakira readings.
Other alternative, you can also still rearrange the kanji and make even more name combinations possible, like “Niniya” or “Jinyu”.
蠑池 “Imoriike”
This is an actual Japanese word, but more specifically it’s a Japanese name for a place, not a person. That might be the reason THAT name feels off, but at least it’s not too far off!
The reading for “蠑” are actually kinda interesting because it only has one, which is “ei”. The reading they use for Imoriike is probably a kirakira-style reading or an ancient, outdated reading. This is actually an interesting kanji because while the meaning IS “newt”, the actual word in modern-day Japanese usage for newt/“imori” doesn’t use that kanji (just that spelling/pronunciation I guess). An outdated word for “salamander” DOES use this kanji tough, “蠑螈”, the second kanji of which actually MEANS axolotl (and is also read “imori”, along with “gen” and “gan”). You can always switch that up if you need to.
The reading for “池” is actually on point, it can be read as “ike” OR it can be read as “chi”. Though in the latter case, I’d understand why you’d want to avoid using the aforementioned readings for the whole name and naming your character “Eichi” (though that’s only from an American perspective; “Eichi” is an actual name in Japanese too). Using “Eiike” looks a little weird and hard to pronounce, being more vowels than consonants. Like the other suggestion I made on “Iyeren”, you can always rearrange the kanji.
“蠑池” together is kind of interesting because when I use google translate on the two kanji together, I also get a nonstandard reading that I can’t find in the dictionary, which is “Suiike” (I’m not totally sure where they’re getting “sui” tbh). That can also be an option if you like it better, or you can stick with Imoriike since it’s not that odd to be named after/in places like this.
Overall:
Only other thought I might have to say is that when you’re writing a Japanese name, do it in eastern format! The character’s last name must come first, so it’ll look something like (as an example using your original submission) “Iyeren Imoriike” or “蠑池 癒韌”.
Anyway, I hope that helped, and if you need more feel free to come back to my inbox.
PS. Thank you so much for the donation, too, I’m very very grateful for it!!
#leafychaotic#asks#replies#archivist#also if there's typos or if something sounds a little nonsense I apologize#I wrote this reply super late at night/early early morning half asleep and on meds#will probably come back to edit typos later but I'm crashing after I queue this
