Special Interview with Junko Takeuchi

アニメ放送開始から20周年を迎えた『NARUTO -ナルト-』。ここまで長く愛されている作品の魅力はどんなところにあるとお考えですか。

Naruto" is celebrating its 20th anniversary since the start of anime broadcasting. What do you think is the appeal of a work that has been loved for so long?

私が『NARUTO -ナルト-』の魅力だと感じていることは「キャラクターが嘘をついていない」ところなのかなと思いました。ストーリーももちろん魅力的なのですが、作品の中で息をしているキャラクターたちが綺麗ごとしか言わないとか、良い所しか見せないとかではなく、みっともない所や、結構汚いことをしたりという部分もひっくるめて、嘘をつかずに描かれているからこそ、同じ人間として近しいものを感じて愛されるのではないでしょうか。私はそこが好きだなと思いました。

What I feel is the charm of "Naruto" is that "the characters do not lie. Of course the story is fascinating, but the characters that live and breathe in the work do not only say beautiful things or show only good things, but they also do disgusting things and dirty things without lying. I think that's what people love about him. I think that's what I like about him.

ナルトにとってのサスケは、どのような存在だと感じていますか。

What do you feel Sasuke is to Naruto?

ナルトが自身でも言っていますが、サスケがどんな存在かと言ったら「友達」なんだと思います。ただ、「友達」＝（イコール）「ナルトのサスケに対する思い」だというのなら、その「友達」という言葉から想像する意味合いが、彼にとってとても深い意味を持つものなんだと感じました。すごくシリアスなカッコいい戦いのシーンで、「お前は一体…何なんだ…？」と聞かれて「友達だ」と返して成り立つ事はあまりないと思います。だからこそ、それが本当の気持ちなんだろうなと感じました。それと、ナルトはサスケを「もう一人の自分」とも感じているんだと思います。切っても切れない実体と影のような存在なんだろうなと思っています。

As Naruto himself says, Sasuke is a "friend" to him. But if "friend" means (equal to) "Naruto's feelings for Sasuke," then I felt that the connotation of the word "friend" has a very deep meaning for him. In a very serious and cool fight scene, when asked "What the hell are you...?" I don't think there are many times when someone asks, "What are you...? That's why I felt that was his true feeling. I also think that Naruto feels that Sasuke is his "other self". I think they are like inseparable entities and shadows.

これまで演じられた数々のエピソードの中で（エピソードを絞るのは難しいことかと思いますが）、特に思い入れのあるシーン、印象に残っているシーンはどんな場面でしょうか。

Of the many episodes you have played (I know it is difficult to narrow down the episodes), what scenes are particularly memorable or memorable to you?

本当に多くの名シーンがある中で、今回はあえてナルトでは無いシーンをあげさせていただくと、猪鹿蝶（奈良シカマル、山中いの、秋道チョウジ）と猿飛アスマ先生との最期のシーンです。収録現場も猪鹿蝶とアスマ先生との4人だけになるように他の出演者を帰して、本当に密度の濃い時間であのシーンを収録したと聞きました。あの時間は本当に尊かったと聞いて、羨ましいなと思いました。実際に出来た映像を見て、すごく良いチームだなと感じられるシーンになっていたので、本当に素敵だなと思ったエピソードでした。スタッフさんも、それが手間暇がかかることだったとしてもそっちの方が良いと思い率先してやってくれたりしたので、それが人間味があふれる結果になっているのかなとも思います。

There are so many great scenes, but I would dare to mention a scene that is not part of Naruto: the final scene between Inoshikacho (Nara Shikamaru, Yamanaka Ino, and Akimichi Choji) and Sarutobi Asuma. I heard that the scene was recorded in a very dense time, with the other actors sent home so that it was just the four of them, Inoshikacho and Asuma Sensei. I was envious to hear how precious that time was. When I saw the actual footage that was created, I could feel that the scene was done by a very good team, so I thought it was a really wonderful episode. The staff also took the initiative to do things that they thought were better even if they required a lot of time and effort, and I think this is what made the result so human.

12月10日より、いよいよ約 7 年ぶりとなる展示イベント『NARUTO THE GALLERY』が開催となります。20周年を記念する大きな企画だと思いますが、どのようなところに期待されていますか。

What are your expectations for the "NARUTO THE GALLERY" exhibition, which will be held from December 10, 2012, for the first time in about seven years, as a major project to celebrate the 20th anniversary?

国内のファンのみならず、国外のファンの皆様にもぜひご来場いただき、大盛況になることを期待しています！期間限定のイベントとなりますので、この期間にたくさん楽しんでいただきたく、ぜひお時間作っていただき、秋葉原へ足を運んでください。来てくれれば楽しめる内容になっていると思いますので、気を楽にして「感動しに来ちゃった」というくらいの気持ちで遊びに来てもらえたら、絶対感動できると思います！

We hope that not only fans in Japan but also those outside of Japan will come to the exhibition and that it will be a great success! This will be a limited time event, so please make time to come and visit Akihabara so that you can enjoy this event a lot during this period. I am sure that you will enjoy yourself if you come, so please take it easy and come with the feeling that you have come just to be impressed, and I am sure that you will be impressed!

最後に、作品を愛されているファンの皆様にメッセージをお願いします。

Finally, do you have a message for the fans who love your works?

20周年ということで、このような大々的な展示会を展開出来るほど『NARUTO』という作品は皆様に愛されているなと感じています。ですが、もっと愛をいただけますか。皆様がギャラリーへといらっしゃってくださることで、愛がどんどんと溜まり、そして昇華していき、ドカンと大きな螺旋丸が出来上がりますので、皆様ぜひとも愛の螺旋丸を作るために『NARUTO THE GALLERY』へと足をお運びください。お待ちしています！

I feel that "NARUTO" is loved by everyone so much that we can hold such a big exhibition for its 20th anniversary. But can you give us more love? As you visit the gallery, more and more love will accumulate and sublimate, and a big spiral circle will be formed. We are waiting for you!
