The more I read in Japanese, the more I feel like the constant stream of new words and expressions will never end. Despite all the progress, there's always more to learn.
It's intimidating and amazing at the same time.

Hello again! Philosophy is starting to get so boring...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also studies some Mandarin today! I heard a cool song and wanted to learn the words I didn't already know! (Sorry if the Korean/Japanese translations aren't perfect matches, I added words that came to mind first)
Tumblr media
After that I studied Chinese architecture but have no photos of that because it was online!
And lastly, some Japanese (Why didn't I know the kanji for 怖い?)

Really happy with how nice my study area looks rn. Hoping that when I move it doesn’t have to be in the communal loungeroom where I have no space for shelves. I used to have a small shelving unit from ikea next to my desk. But once the loungeroom was changed around, against my wishes, it had to be moved. So now my books just sit beside me when my partner isn’t using his computer next to mine. It’s not ideal but oh well. It still looks nice.
I also tested out my new supplies that came. I love Japanese stationary. It’s just so much nicer then Australian stationary.

Light novel series recommendations?
I'm (once more) thinking about diving into a long light novel series. I think reading not only single novels but also a much longer story would improve my Japanese. My problem is, that it's difficult for me to find something I really like. Liking a series so much that I can't wait to read the next volume.
Whenever I see a post of someone who writes about how much they enjoy playing visual novels or reading light novels in Japanese, I wish I could enjoy this kind of stories, too. Unfortunately, many of the popular series are either boys love or typical Isekai/Harem stories, which is not my cup of tea. I really wish I would like them, because this would make finding content SO much easier. XD
Fantasy is okay, I'm just not a fan of stories with one guy plus many cute or sexy girls who (for some reasons) are deeply in love with him. Or main characters who are too overpowered (which makes the fights boring because there is no real challenge).
I'm sure there are more than this kind of stories, they are just difficult to find because most light novel covers I've seen on Amazon.jp look like your typical harem or isekai story. I'm really feeling lost... :(
What I would like to read:
I want to read an exciting story with likable and believable characters. A story with cool twists that makes me want to read more and characters with an interesting personality who are more than just "cool" or "sexy" or "cute".
I mainly like mystery but also action, adventure, science fiction and comedy. Preferably with no (or only a little) "fan service" / erotic elements. Romance is okay as long as it's not the main focus.
If you know such a (light) novel series please let me know! And it's okay if it's technically not a light novel. It doesn't has to be anime style. Any longer novel series with a cool plot and characters would be great.

Japanese lesson 88
Today`s theme is “get the hang of ~ing”.
今日のテーマは“コツを掴む“です。
(きょうの テーマは コツをつかむ です)
1. I would like to be able to get the hang of skiing until next winter.
(俺は来年の冬までにスキーのコツをつかむねん。)
2. Once you can get the hang of that, you should take action on your own.
(コツを掴んだら、行動に移せ)
3. I have been usually said to be good at getting the hang of something that it has never been done by anyone.
(今まで誰もやったことないことについて、コツをつかむのが得意とよく言われる。)
You should use it!
See you again!

つち ぐも そう し
「土蜘蛛草紙」 "Tsuchigumo Written Work"
Tsuchigumo Sōshi (土蜘蛛草紙) is a 14th-century Japanese picture scroll depicting the heroic exploits of Minamoto no Raikō in his battle against an enormous spider monster. (Wikipedia)
Minamoto no Yorimitsu (源 頼光, 948 – August 29, 1021), also known as Minamoto no Raikō, served the regents of the Fujiwara clan along with his brother Yorinobu, taking the violent measures the Fujiwara were themselves unable to take. He is one of the earliest Minamoto of historical note for his military exploits, and is known for quelling the bandits of Ōeyama. (Wikipedia)
。。。
土蜘蛛
[つちぐも] ... the name for a race of spider-like yōkai in Japanese folklore. Alternative names for the mythological Tsuchigumo include yatsukahagi (八握脛, roughly "eight grasping legs") and ōgumo (大蜘蛛, "giant spider"). (Wikipedia)
日本(にほん)に伝(つた)わる巨大(きょだい)なクモの妖怪(ようかい)で、別名(べつめい) 「 八握脛(やつかはぎ) 」 「大蜘蛛(おおぐも)」。(ウィキペディア)
伝(つた)わる: (in this context) to be handed down (from generation to generation); to be passed down (Jisho.org)
土蜘蛛 also can mean 1. Atypus karschi (Asian species of mygalomorph spider) 2. tsuchigumo (people of ancient Japan who were not subjects of the Yamato court) (Jisho.org) or 3. The definition previously listed; However, when I was looking at the wikipedia page for Atypus karschi, the Japanese version of the article stated it was named "地蜘蛛(じぐも)" instead of "土蜘蛛". Furthermore it did not list "土蜘蛛" as an alternative spelling although the first characters of both names share a similar meaning.
。。。
草紙
[そうし] 1. written work (esp. a bound text, as opposed to a scroll) 2. a text written entirely in kana 3. graphic novel (esp. one created between the 12th and 19th centuries) 4. notebook (for practicing kana, drawing pictures, etc.) 5. rough draft / Other forms: 草子 【そうし】、双紙 【そうし】、冊子 【そうし】 (Jisho.org)
。。。
Please correct me if I made a mistake.

Interesting Japanese word compared to other EA languages: ソ連
[ソれん], (soren), Soviet union Clipped from ソビエト連邦 [ソビエトれんぽう] (sobieto renpō)
Compared to for example Mandarin and Korean, this word is rarely if never written with a kanji. Mandarin: 蘇聯 / 苏联 [sūlián] Korean: 蘇聯 소련 [soryeon] (SK) / 쏘련 [ssoryeon] (NK)
Another funny name for the Soviet Union was 赤露 [せきろ] (sekiro) which means "to be naked" in Mandarin (chìlù).
