mini soundtrack review!!

i was so worried about the music for season 2 of jjk after alisa okehazama and hiroaki tsutsumi left the team, but yoshimasa terui has really come into his own with the freedom to create a score that suits his style, rather than working around other people.

i feel like the music for season 2 brings us a lot closer to having a recognisable “sound” for jjk thanks to the unique instrumentation and strong use of motifs. i think yoshimasa terui’s energetic style really suits the modern setting with its “cool” characters, but he’s also great at switching it up when the scene calls for it — like the piano piece in hidden inventory, or the opening to the mechamaru fight which is a tip of the hat to 90s anime.

apart from megumi’s theme and nanami’s theme from the kyoto fight in jjk 0, i didn’t really like any of yoshimasa terui’s tracks before season 2, so i’m honestly shocked by how much i’m loving the music this season. i think he’ll probably become my favourite jjk composer overall by the end of season 2 — so wow, you showed me i guess!!

if you haven’t listened to the whole hidden inventory soundtrack, please do!! there are so many brilliant tracks that didn’t feature in the anime and it’s such a shame. the album really picks up from ‘searching for riko’ so start there if the tracks at the beginning put you off. my favourites in soundtrack order:

limitless cursed technique - such a dreamy track which sets the stage for gojo’s leitmotif to come round again and again throughout the soundtrack, representing all his highs and lows

prepare yourself - i adore the tasty rhythms and the polyphony and the delicious strings towards the end!!

if i am with you - no need to say anything at all 😭

no hesitation - this might be the best track on the whole soundtrack and it wasn’t used?! incredible guitar work and super satisfying syncopation

physical prowess - we only hear a tiny bit in the anime, but the beauty of this track is in hearing how all its different parts fit together as a whole. it’s a journey of rich textures!!

with rage - super atmospheric track that feels to me like the musical representation of the point “the strongest duo” fractures

delirious - use a good pair of headphones to get your world rocked!! so much to say about this track, but i’ll limit myself to gushing about how the distorted version of gojo’s leitmotif representing his mental state after his rebirth reminds me of how terui distorted megumi’s theme for “an unfair reality” in season 1 - simple but so effective!!

decision - seems like this was composed for the moment suguru decides his “true feelings” so whyyyy wasn’t it used for that??? this piece literally sounds like suguru losing his grip on his sanity before the chaos in his mind is replaced by calm and quiet when he finally lands on his decision. the build up to the stuttering percussion that becomes his signature sound is so so good!!

anyway, that’s what was rattling around my brain this rainy tuesday morning. i wish there was more analysis of the jjk music online because there are tons of little clues woven into it, like how suguru’s leitmotif slowly warps into something unrecognisable over the course of the soundtrack. i’m from a musical background, but it’s not my day job so i’m not confident enough to do it myself.

i hope with the increase in popularity of the anime and the more cohesive soundtrack for season 2, someone will dig into it!!

INTRODUCING — JUJUTSU KAISEN DR

NAME : Yuki Kuroyomi (結稀黒黄泉)

ゆき

結稀 — Yuki

結 (yu) — to tie, to bind.

稀 (ki) — rare.

くろよみ

黒黄泉 — Kuroyomi

黒 (kuro) — black, darkness.

黄泉 (yomi) — underworld / land of the dead in japanese mythology.

HEIGHT : 5'7

GENDER : female

PRONOUNS : she/her

LIKES : spicy and sour foods, the beach at night, reading history, gentle breeze on a gloomy evening.

DISLIKES : sweets, loud and annoying people — Satoru Gojo in general (jk, they are good friends).

APPEARANCE :

glossy black hair, crimson eyes, and a scar on the right side of the face (thanks Toji).

TIMELINES :

平安時代 — HEIAN ERA

born to the Fujiwara clan during the golden age of jujutsu, my future was pretty much promised — or, should have been — except that I was born normal. a normal human with no cursed energy, no heavenly restriction, no nothing. well, I could see curses, if that counts. but that was pretty much it. and, surprisingly, I was content. even if I couldn't be a sorcerer (because who wouldn't want to risk their life fighting scary-looking monsters, right?), I still had a loving family, and although the clan people did see me as useless in terms of sorcery, they didn't treat me so bad.

age 23, and everything was going good for the most part, but recently there had been talks about some "King of Curses" going around. from the word of mouth, the clan heads had decided to give offerings to this supposed "King" to prevent killings of humans — clan members to be specific. and ofcourse, i'd heard about this too, and ever since then, my curiosity about this "King" had started to take root. women would talk about the disfigured appearance of this evil sorcerer, how he looked "scary" and "non-humanish" — a monster, and the suffocating aura that surrounded him. the more I heard, the more I wanted to see this man for myself. four arms, four eyes, and two mouths — one could come up with so many ideas of what this man could look like. but what one couldn't come up with was how all these features put together could look so....appealing?

I had been taking my daily stroll within the clans bounds when, all of a sudden, the man I had been waiting to see for so long appeared right in front of me — but did he really? monsters are supposed to be scary but, what's this? I don't feel scared. there's no "suffocating" aura around him. were all those talks lies? things people came up with on their own? or was I finally going insane? before I could utter even a word, this man — with the most serious face i'd ever seen, as if he's about to talk business — goes, “be my wife, woman”. huh? be what? am I being addressed right now?

what would a rational person do in this situation? say no, ofcourse. and thank heavens I wasn't foolish enough to not do that. “you're lucky he didn't kill you right there and then”, is what my friend told me when I shared with her my interaction with this "King". yeah, I did reject his offer, but...it appears he doesn't take no for an answer. now, as it seems, the clan has been inviting him frequently, or — dare I say — he's been inviting himself over every single day.

“I do not wish to marry a killer”, I tell him, his 5th — and last day — of being unwelcomed, yet still infiltrating the clans perimeters. it's been two weeks now, and I suppose he has given up. what a shame, I think as I take my daily stroll, but understandable I suppose. who would change their ways for someone el- “woman”, a sound echos from behind me. turning around, my gaze falls onto the person who just spoke. it's him. “I will stop the killings....or whatever it is that you want”, he says, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand as he looks away. he appears somewhat....hesitant? “so marry me, woman. be my wife”, he finishes, finally meeting my gaze.

懐玉 / 玉折編 — HIDDEN INVENTORY / PREMATURE DEATH ARC (THE BEFORE)

is reincarnation a thing? maybe it is. no, it definitely is. because nothing else could explain this. 1000 years after the first life that I lived, I was reborn again. same appearance, same name, same me, but a different (non-sorcerer) family and.....a cursed technique? HIS cursed technique? and so much cursed energy? is this what being married to the King of Curses in a past life does to you?

I "regained" my memories at the age of 15 — the year was 2005, and I was attending Jujutsu Tech. nothing unusual or out of the ordinary happened. It was a normal Thursday evening, and as always, we — Satoru, Suguru, Ieiri, and me — were in the school library group studying — or, to be more specific — me and Shoko were studying, Satoru was being an idiot (are we surprised?), and Suguru was fuming because he couldn't focus thanks to him.

I was reading a book called "History of Curses — Heian Era", when I stumbled upon the honorable mention of the most evil sorcerer in the entire age of jujutsu, the King of Curses — Ryomen Sukuna. at first, I only felt dizzy, and I figured I was having a headache thanks to the loud-mouthed idiot yapping away. and then, the waterfalls started. I was crying, but I didn't know why. and for once in his life, Satoru had shut up. “uh guys, Yuki is crying”, he said.

I shut the book, got up and left. my chest was aching, and I felt terribly sad for some reason. with no idea about what was happening to me, I decided to just go to my room, and try to calm down. eventually, I drifted off to sleep. I didn't have a dream this time, no. instead, I lived through my whole previous life, and when I woke up, the ache in my chest had only worsened.

呪呪胎戴天編 — FEARSOME WOMB ARC

year 2018, age 26, and I was now a first-grade sorcerer. though I didn't teach at Jujutsu Tech, I would visit the school often. I had spent some of my best years there, and well, it was here that I regained my memories from a millennia ago. though, ofcourse, I had made peace with them, and knew I was no longer the self I was back then, and so never really felt the need to share this "secret" with anyone. what's the worst that could possibly happen anyway, right?

out of everything that could've possibly happened, this was even worse. the King of Curses had reawakened, and made home inside a vessel, a kid — Yuji Itadori. ever since the news had reached my ears, I hadn't visit Jujutsu Tech. hell, I even left Japan. was I scared? no. I just didn't want to face him. the Yuki he knew was already dead, and the person I was now was not someone he was familiar with. even if we looked, acted and were the same, we were still two different people. so I chose the next best thing. I left. but not before sharing my "secret" that I planned to take to my grave with Satoru and Shoko. if Suguru was here, i'd have let him in on it too.

渋谷事変 — SHIBUYA INCIDENT

and now, age 27, present day Japan. the battle of curses against sorcerers, the city of Tokyo, and the people crowding it on Halloween night, with no idea that most of them will be turned into collateral damage by the end of it. I was called in, and I knew I couldn't ignore this. I had to go back to Japan, and more likely than not, face Sukuna.

fighting the curses, and working with other sorcerers to lift all the veils and try and save the people trapped inside, when I sense his presence. maybe it wasn't so smart to marry the King of Curses. all my death did was make him worse. and now he's in Shibuya, with so many people, plenty of curses and curse users, yet so little sorcerers to save everyone.

I witnessed the duel between Jogo and Sukuna, and the fire-y display of their powers, as I used my own to hover above them in the air. it had been a long time, and he was now here, albeit in a different body, but still the same person — just worse, crazy even. I watched as he finished the disaster curse, and was about to walk away, when — suddenly, he looked up. had he recognized me? I doubt that. it was probably the cursed energy he picked up on. I was too far up for him to see my face clearly anyway. an eye-contact of 5 seconds, and then he left.

and so did I. now, I was inside the train station, standing inside some dark tunnel, and thinking back to the past. this is one reason why having your past self's memories suck. you can't help when they resurface. i'm supposed to be out there, helping others, but all I can do right now is stand here — with no regards to what's going on currently. i'm too deep in thought to be paying attention to anything else around me, when I hear a voice. his voice. and a figure coming out from behind a distant pillar.

“come out, you”. this darned voice that i've been avoiding. I knew i'd probably face him soon, but does it really have to be now? “I won't repeat myself again. come out, now. that's an order”. yeah, he definitely does not know who he's talking to. as much as I want to not listen to him and just leave, I know it's better to just get this over with. and so I do. I walk out, emerging from the shadowy tunnel. just what reaction is he going to have?

術式 — CURSED (INNATE) TECHNIQUE

• FLAMES OF THE UNHOLY TEMPEST (邪悪嵐の黒炎 — Jaaku Arashi no Koku'en)

DESCRIPTION : flames of black imbued with insanely large amount of cursed energy. can exorcise special grade curses in a matter of seconds (if attack is directed correctly at the core/"heart"), though I don't take missions that often so, i'm still a first-grade.

拡張術式 — EXTENSION TECHNIQUE

• DEATHS ARROW (死の箭 — Shi no Sen)

DESCRIPTION : an extension of my innate technique. allows me to shoot out fire arrows (similar to Fuga, just more intense fire-power, and black).

領域展開 : 冥界至高 (Meikai Shikō) — DOMAIN EXPANSION : NETHERS SUPREME

this is my innate domain. manifestation of the underworld into the living world. the inside of it consists of stony-ground, almost a plateau-like place, with black flames surrounding it. I stand on the higher ground, with a chair of sorts right behind me. on command, the flames surrounding the land shoot out, engulfing the opponent, and the curses are exorcised.

this domain — like Ryomen Sukunas — is manifested without a barrier or the need for creating a separate space, increasing the effective range of the domain.

the hand-sign for expanding the domain (that I came up with) creates a shape that resembles the nether star from minecraft, relating to the netherworld, and is somewhat identical to Sukunas domain hand-sign (which was the goal).

SIDE NOTE : honestly, I didn't really feel the need to come up with some cool cursed technique because to my utmost relief, Sukuna had a technique like Furnace, and my other dr self had a fire based power too so, I just put those two together and came up with this.

in this dr, I just wanted to be somewhat op in present day Japan so I wouldn't have to struggle too much against curses, since the main focus of this dr is the past shared between Yuki and Sukuna, and it's impact on their present selves.

I might make another jjk dr where my role is somewhat different, with a different cursed technique and all, but for now this is all I have.
