** takes a lot of weird liberties with plot and characterizations and misses a lot of smaller details from the game. okay for an introduction to the franchise but not really recommended as a properly faithful adaptation.

i feel like i've already talked about (gestures @ last post) all of that before but i can't be bothered to look for it. i know i've certainly thought about it before. anyway. i don't know if i really articulated it properly but

trying to repay unconditional kindness so that you're not indebted to the person who was kind to you so they can't later use that kindness against you as a backhanded weapon but never feeling like it's enough so you overcompensate that debt repayment.

what's the deal with me never making solo promos

thinking about the sheer impact neku had on beat during his week alone and crying about it a little bit.

beat: i'm an idiot (derogatory) neku: yeah, you're an idiot (non-derogatory, encouraging), so act like it.

like, it's a much more crude way of saying "your strengths are just different than everyone else's, so lean into your strengths and trust those around you to carry what you can't" but he understands that meaning/the intention behind it

and then he outright asks for help?? beat, who has been let down by everyone in his life (except rhyme), who tries to carry everything on his own and be the strong one for everyone else, who puts everyone else's needs above his own, who is so fiercely independent because he could only ever rely on himself. he outright tells neku he can't do this (save rhyme) on his own and asks for help.

and you can see how all of it carries into neo, too. he encourages the twisters to play to their strengths while he does what he's best at. he's the muscle! point him in a direction and he'll do his thing! someone else can do the plan making and shot calling because that's their strength, not his.

anyway, there's no real point to this post, i'm just crying over his development again.

just because i'm thinking about it again, i need to be salty for a second. one of my biggest gripes with neo was what they did with shiki. or like... what they didn't do, rather.

like, i fully support her (and eri) going on to become a major brand owner in shibuya (big enough to have a store in 104!) by the age of 18 (which feels... a bit unrealistic, imo?) but you cannot genuinely tell me, after everything that happens in the first game, that she would just sit on her hands and wait for neku to come back. i feel like it's very much a she can do both scenario, but she doesn't and that's just not the shiki i know from the end of the first game. you can't tell me that she wouldn't put in just as much effort as beat to find him.

and speaking of beat risking his life for others without considering the consequences (or rather deciding that the consequences were worth it because he doesn't actually care if he dies as long as [insert person he cares about] lives):

i will never forgive the anime for taking this from me. i know there was limited time and all, but there were literally no consequences to beat being a reaper in the anime, whereas he literally almost died because of the choices he made (ie. didn't have enough points at the end of the w2 to stay alive because he refused to erase players) and his only thought was i have to hold myself together to save rhyme

convention weekend is over and @psychreaped is officially on their way home and i am the big sadge now that they're gone 🥹

it was a really fun weekend, though!! a couple of interactions with artists in the vendor hall were really, really cute (they were very excited and enthusiastic about seeing twewy cosplayers) and we ran into a shiki and a nagi on sunday, which really pulled the whole thing together.

adhd brain and various other circumstances meant we didn't get to do a proper beatneku photoshoot outside of a few selfies that we took (next time 🔪) but rest assured we were very gay all weekend
