"Keep blocking, let's go! Don't stop!" Ukai's firm voice resonated as you handed him another ball from the basket. "This could be your last chance. Always remember that! Give it your all!"
With that rallying cry, Ukai threw the ball with force. Hinata launched himself desperately towards it, his movements quick as a flash, but he couldn't reach it in time to intercept.
"If you waste any opportunity, it could cost you the game," Ukai continued, his tone stern but with a motivating undertone. Without wasting time, he grabbed another ball and sent it towards the redhead. This time, Hinata positioned himself, but his reception was weak, and the ball fell to the ground with a dull thud that echoed through the gym.
Despite the mistake, Ukai flashed a small smile and nodded in approval. "Well done, Hinata! Now get up quickly. One more."
"Yes! Thank you, Coach!" Hinata responded with the same energy that characterized him, his determination shining in his eyes.
From your position, you watched the exchange with a mixture of pride and admiration. Seeing Hinata drenched in sweat but so determined inspired you in your own way. With a small smile, you grabbed another ball from the basket and handed it to the coach. As you did, you couldn't help but give the redhead a supportive look.
"Come on, Shoyo," you thought, feeling a small but warm sense of camaraderie. The practice continued, the sound of bouncing balls and cries of effort filling the air as the team honed their skills with each attempt.
You walked over to Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Sugawara, who were sitting on the floor with a magazine open between them. The pages seemed to capture all their attention, and the murmurs of awe among them piqued your curiosity.
"Wow! Look at the size of that photo!" Nishinoya exclaimed, his eyes scanning the image intently with excitement.
"What are you looking at?" you asked cautiously, though the relaxed tone of the group gave you enough confidence to sit beside them.
"It's a volleyball sports magazine!" Nishinoya responded quickly, turning toward you while lifting the magazine so you could see it up close. On the open page, you could distinguish several players wearing uniforms from teams you didn't recognize, all posed in ways that conveyed intensity and skill.
Hinata and Kageyama, drawn by the enthusiasm, approached the group. Tanaka, always eager to share any interesting find, took the magazine from Nishinoya's hands and proudly showed it to the redhead and the black-haired one.
"Look at this!" he said, pushing the magazine a little closer to their faces. "Ushiwaka, from Shiratorizawa, is among the top three students in the entire country."
"Shiratorizawa!? That's the place Kageyama couldn't get into!" Hinata remarked loudly.
Kageyama, visibly annoyed by the comment, quickly turned toward him with a piercing glare. "Shut up, Hinata!" he growled, his voice full of irritation.
"Who's Ushiwaka?" Shoyo asked, unaware of his teammate's anger, still maintaining his curiosity.
Tanaka dropped his jaw, incredulous at the redhead's ignorance. "You don't know!? He's the number one player in the entire prefecture: Wakatoshi Ushijima!" he declared, as if the name itself carried an unbeatable weight.
Without waiting any longer, you grabbed the magazine from Hinata, your eyes immediately searching for the photograph of this supposed prodigy. As you stopped on the image, you couldn't help but examine the details of the young player. His face had a cold, determined expression, his broad shoulders and impeccable posture exuding an innate confidence.
"Wow, he really looks like a star," you commented quietly, flipping the page in search of more information or photographs. Though you had never heard of him, his presence was undeniable even through the printed images.
Sugawara, who had been watching the conversation with a smile, turned to Kageyama in a more relaxed tone. "Did you really try to get into a place with players of this level?"
Before the black-haired player could respond, Tanaka added with his usual humor. "And I bet you were going to yell at that superstar things like ‘Move faster, idiot!’ Am I right?" he imitated, exaggerating Kageyama’s voice theatrically.
Kageyama frowned, crossing his arms. "Of course not!" he growled, his offended tone making it clear he wasn't enjoying the jokes.
"If you don't beat them, you won't be able to play against Nekoma, right?" you asked, keeping your attention on the pages of the magazine, although the conversation had caught your interest.
At that moment, Ukai's deep voice echoed behind you, causing everyone to stand up quickly. "Hey, hey, Shiratorizawa isn't the only formidable opponent," he said, making everyone turn toward him.
"Do you think you’ll be among the top four like last year?" you asked, recalling what you had heard from Takeda sensei about the competition.
"Yes, but there are other big opponents," Ukai replied while pulling a crumpled paper from his jacket. "There's Wakutani Minami, with their superior defense and coordination, and Dateko, with their steel wall; that team has the best blockers in the country."
You moved closer to see the names on the list. Ukai pointed to one of them. "If I remember correctly, we lost to them 2-0 in March," he mentioned.
You looked at Asahi and Nishinoya, noticing their tense postures. It was clear that match still weighed on them; it was the reason Asahi had temporarily left the team after Dateko. Putting the pieces together in your mind, you understood that the emotional burden was still present within the team.
You returned your attention to Ukai's explanation, trying to stay focused. "So, depending on the matchups, we might play against them in the first round," Ukai continued, his tone grave, underscoring the weight of the information.
The team would have to work hard if they wanted to go far, especially facing elite teams.
"That will be all for now, I’ll tell you the details later," Ukai concluded, putting the paper back in his jacket. "Remember, they’re the best contenders of the year, but if you look up and not ahead, you'll lose perspective. No team will enter the tournament wanting to lose. Everyone wants to win. While we train nonstop, the others will too, whether they’re good or bad, everyone is trying to win. Don’t forget that, and don’t let anyone call you 'wingless birds' again," he encouraged, his voice full of firmness and conviction.
After cleaning up and gathering all your things to head home, Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama, Hinata, and you decided to make a stop at Ukai's family store to grab something to drink. The choice was unanimous: sodas. Soon, you all settled on the sidewalk to rest a bit, enjoying a well-deserved break after the intense practice.
You sat next to Kageyama, watching as he drank his soda while the perpetual frown that seemed to mark his face remained. Unable to resist, you asked curiously, "Why the face?"
"What face?" He pulled the drink away from his lips and looked at you, visibly confused. "This is my normal face," he added with a shrug, as if his expression was entirely natural.
You couldn’t help but smile at his response. "You always look like you’re upset," you admitted, and before Kageyama could reply, both Hinata and Tanaka nodded in agreement, backing you up.
"Why don’t you give us a smile? I’ve never seen you smile," you teased cheerfully, the little joke that popped into your mind sparking a bit of fun. Kageyama glanced at you out of the corner of his eye without saying a word, and you, without thinking, moved to sit directly in front of him.
"Come on, Kageyama," Hinata encouraged from his spot, the excitement on his face completely contagious.
"Smile," you said in English playfully, flashing an exaggerated grin to show him how it was done. "Like this."
The dark-haired boy stared at you, his lips pressed into a straight line, as if he was debating whether to give in to the moment. The silence dragged on, but the tension in the air vanished when you leaned in slightly closer, a mischievous smile on your face.
"Come on," you said, this time in a softer, more playful tone as you gently placed your index fingers on the sides of his lips. With a slight tug upward, you tried to draw a smile on his face, challenging the serious expression that seemed to dominate him.
"Come on, Kageyama! Just one!" Hinata insisted, his contagious energy radiating as he beamed at his teammate.
Kageyama, visibly irritated, furrowed his brow and snapped back, "Why would I want to adopt the expression of idiots like you?" His words, though sharp, didn’t carry the same weight they usually did. Something in his tone—perhaps exhaustion or a lack of conviction—made them less convincing.
"Don’t be so grumpy," you protested softly, adopting a pleading expression. "Come on, Kageyama-kun, I just want to see you smile." You moved your fingers closer to his face, putting on a rare look of innocence and kindness in an attempt to break through his resistance.
Kageyama sighed, exasperated, but finally relented—or at least it seemed that way. His face didn’t show a genuine smile, but rather a grimace that could be interpreted as something between a smile and a mocking expression. It wasn’t exactly what you’d hoped for, but at least it was a small step.
"Terrifying," Tanaka muttered under his breath, a nervous laugh escaping his lips. Nishinoya watched the scene unfold with a mix of astonishment and amusement.
"Aww, see? It’s not that hard," you said encouragingly, though you had to admit to yourself that Kageyama’s "smile" left much to be desired. "Plus, you look cute." Your tone softened as you lied slightly; while the effort was appreciated, there was still a lot of room for improvement. "Right, guys?" you asked for backup, throwing a knowing glance at the others.
"Yeah, sure... better stick to his usual face," Tanaka quipped sarcastically, his tone echoed by the group as he watched Kageyama with a mix of distrust and amusement.
"Don't listen to them," you shot back, smiling once more, this time with a hint of mischief, before shifting your focus back to the dark-haired boy. Kageyama, seemingly fed up with the situation, gently pushed your hand away from his face. His fingers encircled your wrist delicately but without much force, signaling the end of his tolerance.
The melody flowed from your fingers like a controlled torrent, each note resonating with precision and emotion as the piano keys responded to your mastery. The empty room filled with the vibrant harmony of Rachmaninoff, and the echoes of the sound drifted faintly down the hallway, perhaps attracting a curious listener. Your eyes followed the movement of your hands, almost instinctively, as they moved with agility and determination, bringing to life the piece you had practiced with such dedication for weeks.
Your heart beat strongly, driven by the intensity of the moment. Inspiration enveloped you, drowning out any distractions or mistakes. Each press of the lower keys made the chords rise forcefully, almost aggressively, driving the piece to a dramatic climax. With a final strike full of fervor, your hands abruptly left the keys, as if they burned with the contact.
You remained still for a moment, the echo of the last notes still lingering in the air, before lowering your gaze to your hands. The pads of your fingers were slightly reddened, the result of the pressure exerted during the more intense passages. You looked at your hands in wonder, as though they belonged to someone else, and felt a wave of emotion wash over you.
The sudden sound of applause broke the stillness that had filled the room after the final chord, jolting you out of your trance. Startled, you jumped slightly in your seat, feeling an intense warmth spread across your face. You slowly turned, your heart beating so loudly that you could barely hear your own thoughts.
There was Tsukishima, casually leaning against the doorframe, still in his school uniform, perfectly placed, with his usual indifferent expression. However, his eyes hid something different: a spark of genuine interest that was as rare as it was unsettling.
"That... was amazing," he said, his calm voice echoing in the empty space.
"How long have you been there?" you asked, trying to keep your composure as your hands instinctively intertwined in your lap.
"Long enough to see all of that," Tsukishima replied with unsettling calm. He took a step into the room, letting his bag fall beside the doorframe with a careless movement. "I didn't know you played the piano."
"Well... it's not something I go around announcing," you replied, trying to sound nonchalant as you slightly leaned toward the piano, as if you needed to fix something on the keys. "It's more of a hobby. I didn't think anyone would hear me."
" hobby?" he murmured, stopping a few steps away from you. His gaze briefly wandered toward the instrument before returning to your eyes, scrutinizing you as if he were trying to understand something you hadn't said. "If this is what you call a hobby, I can't imagine what it would be like if you took it seriously."
The way he said it, with no sarcasm or mockery, but with an unexpected sincerity, made your cheeks burn again. You looked away toward the keys, feeling your fingers tense slightly. "It's not that big of a deal," you murmured, trying to downplay it, though the satisfaction of his comment lingered within you.
"What piece was that?" he asked, leaning a little toward the piano, his eyes scanning the sheet music you had left aside. "It sounded... complicated."
"It's one of Rachmaninoff's," you answered, surprised by his genuine interest. "I’ve been practicing it for weeks to get it right. It's intense, but there's something about it that hooked me from the start."
"Intense, sure," Tsukishima repeated, a small, almost imperceptible smile tugging at his lips. "Does that include the dramatic finish you gave it? Because it felt like you were at a concert, not in an empty room."
The light teasing in his tone made you let out a soft laugh, helping you relax your shoulders. "Maybe I got carried away," you admitted, letting out a sigh. "It’s easy to lose yourself in something you love."
For a moment, silence filled the room, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Tsukishima seemed lost in thought while his fingers gently brushed the piano keys without pressing them. "It's impressive," he finally said, his voice barely lower than usual. "I never thought someone from here could do something like that."
"Is that a compliment?" you asked, raising an eyebrow as you looked at him with a mix of disbelief and amusement.
This feeling, this rush of adrenaline and ecstasy, was your most cherished reward. "Yes, yes!" you whispered excitedly, bringing your fingers to your lips in a reverent gesture, as if they had been divine instruments. For you, music wasn’t just a discipline; it was a living art, a burning flame that not only illuminated but consumed everything in its path, leaving you eager to start again.
"Maybe," he responded with a shrug, before straightening up and looking directly at you. "But don’t get used to it. I just told the truth."
Without thinking too much, you slid a little to the side, making space for him on the bench beside the piano. To your surprise, Tsukishima accepted the invitation without protest, settling next to you with his relaxed posture, though his eyes observed the piano with a veiled curiosity.
"What else can you play?" he asked, his tone neutral but laced with a hint of interest he didn’t bother to hide.
"Mhm..." You brought a finger to your chin, pretending to be deep in thought. "Let me see..." After a few moments of deliberation, you straightened your back and placed your hands on the keys, letting your fingers find a melody you had practiced not too long ago.
Carefully, you began to play the chorus of Can’t Help Falling in Love. Though it wasn’t a perfect rendition—you vaguely remembered it from an online tutorial—the sweet and nostalgic melody filled the room, wrapping the two of you in an unexpectedly intimate atmosphere.
"It’s the only thing I remember well," you admitted with a shy smile as your fingers stumbled slightly over one of the notes, but you kept going without stopping.
Tsukishima watched you silently, his eyes following the movement of your hands. When you finished, a brief pause settled between you before he spoke.
"Not bad," he said, resting an elbow on the edge of the piano and turning his body slightly toward you. "Though I think you could work on that stumble in the third chord."
You rolled your eyes, unable to hold back a smile. "So now you're a music critic?"
"I'm just telling the truth," he replied with a shrug, his lips curling into a faintly amused smirk.
"Then why don’t you try it?" you shot back, standing up from the bench and motioning to the piano as if challenging him.
"Me? Not a chance," he replied quickly, though his gaze lingered on the keys as if he were considering your suggestion. "I have no idea how this thing works."
"Oh, come on, it’s not that complicated," you insisted, leaning toward the piano and pointing out a few basic notes. "I can teach you the basics. Just a few notes so you’re not stuck as a bored spectator."
Tsukishima gave you a skeptical look, but the curiosity in his eyes was undeniable. Finally, he let out a resigned sigh. "Fine, but if this gets ridiculous, I’m out."
"Don’t worry," you assured him, sitting back down and placing your hands over his to guide him. "I’ll be the best teacher you’ve ever had."
"Alright, let’s start with something simple. This is the diatonic scale," you explained, carefully moving his fingers across the keys in ascending and descending order. "From the center to the left, you’ll find the lower-pitched notes, and from the center to the right, the higher-pitched ones."
You played the scale slowly, your fingers guiding his with precision as each note sounded. "Listen to how the depth of the sound changes. It’s like the left side of the piano has a deep, resonant voice, while the right side has a lighter, brighter tone."
However, the blond didn’t seem to be paying attention to your explanation. Instead of focusing on the piano, his eyes had wandered to you, studying every detail of your face with an unexpected intensity.
He noticed the subtle layer of peach shimmer eyeshadow that highlighted your eyelids, how your long lashes fluttered delicately each time you blinked. His gaze lingered on the two small beauty marks resting on your left cheek, as if placed there by a careful brushstroke.
There was something about the way your face seemed to light up when you spoke about music, how your lips curved slightly as you explained each detail, that momentarily drew him into a trance.
"I can’t teach you if you’re not paying attention," you said with a faintly reproachful tone, turning your head to look at him directly. You had noticed his distant gaze, and a slight smile appeared on your lips—half amused, half challenging.
Tsukishima, far from intimidated, let a faint smile play across his lips. "I am paying attention," he replied calmly, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied you with shameless ease. "Just… not to what you’re playing."
You pursed your lips in disapproval, crossing your arms over your chest. "Then what are you paying attention to?"
His words came with the same calm as his gaze: "You."
The weight of his confession hit you with unexpected intensity. His eyes remained fixed on yours, unwavering, though the faint blush creeping onto his cheeks betrayed him.
"Me?" you repeated, almost in a whisper, as the heat began to rise to your own face.
"Yes, you," he confirmed without hesitation, leaning toward you with a disarming naturalness. The closeness of his presence, the way his words were delivered with such sincerity, made you question whether he was being serious or if this was some kind of elaborate joke.
The laugh that escaped your lips was nervous, and you instantly realized how unnatural it sounded. You didn’t know what to say or how to react to the weight of what he had just revealed. Your gaze darted away, searching for something in the room to break the tension. But all you found was the empty echo of the space.
You were deeply grateful for the sound of the timer on your phone, marking the end of your practice session. A reprieve, a perfect excuse to break the awkward silence. "We have to go," you said firmly, standing up quickly and hurriedly packing your sheet music into your bag.
The weight of the conversation, however, didn’t disappear, and even with your hands busy organizing your things, you could feel the void left behind by his words. You couldn’t bring yourself to meet his gaze. Without thinking much about it, you began walking down the hallway, your steps firm and quick, as if moving would somehow allow you to escape the intensity of the moment.
Tsukishima, for his part, didn’t seem to be in any rush. He followed in silence, his presence like a shadow by your side, though there was something about his demeanor that suggested he wasn’t about to let the conversation end so easily.
Your pace quickened, maybe in the hope that speed would help you escape the awkwardness, but Tsukishima’s presence, so close to you, made it impossible to focus on anything else. You could feel the faint vibration of his steps behind you, his shadow ever-present, his silence echoing in your ears like a persistent hum.
This feeling… you thought, sensing that strange knot in your stomach that seemed to make you falter for just a moment. You knew what it was, even if you had never wanted to admit it before. It’s Tsukishima, you told yourself in a mental whisper, as if naming it would make it easier to understand.
Your hands, which had been gripping your backpack tightly, began to sweat slightly. The warmth on your face didn’t fade; if anything, it seemed to grow with every passing second. It’s just Tsukishima, so why are you so nervous? But deep down, you knew that question didn’t have an easy answer.
Why does it feel like all my thoughts and emotions center around him? The idea of Tsukishima being so close to you, his presence surrounding you, became more than just a physical fact. The way his shadow moved alongside yours, his imposing yet quiet presence, began to shift your perception of the space around you.
You glanced at Tsukishima out of the corner of your eye. There he was, his gaze fixed ahead, yet somehow, you felt as though he was watching you too. He’s… handsome, you thought again, as if acknowledging it was some kind of revelation. I can’t deny that.
Something about the way he moved, the way his silence carried unspoken meaning, something in that calm and distant attitude, made him even more… alluring. But it wasn’t just that. There was something else, something you couldn’t quite put into words. It was as if, when he was near, the world around you faded slightly, leaving only his presence, his essence, and that quiet energy that affected you more than he probably realized.
Do I like Tsukishima? The question floated abruptly into your mind, a sudden wave of clarity that left you momentarily breathless. The blush that flooded your face caught you off guard, and for a moment, your mind went blank, unable to fully process what you had just thought.
The cold sweat on your hands turned into pressure, a weight in your chest that made you take another hurried step, as if it could somehow soothe the chaos unraveling inside you. But it didn’t.
“Why do you make me so nervous?” you murmured unconsciously, walking even faster. But you didn’t expect him to answer, much less in the way that he did.
“Why do you keep running?” Tsukishima caught up to you with one long stride, his voice closer than you expected. “If you don’t stop, you’re going to tire yourself out.”
“And what if I do get tired?” I replied with a sigh that sounded more exasperated than I intended, but my words lost some of their edge when I looked at him directly. Because, in looking at him, I realized what had been happening inside me. I liked him. And I didn’t know what to do with that truth.
“Do whatever you want,” Tsukishima replied, his tone returning to its usual register: distant, condescending, even a little mocking. Somehow, his unshakable attitude brought me a small sense of calm, though the confusion inside me still lingered. I forgot, for a moment, just how unbearably annoying he could be and how he always managed to make me feel slightly off balance. What an infuriating guy, I thought, though I couldn’t deny that, deep down, it was hard not to find something about him… addictive.
Finally, we arrived at the gym, and the familiar bustle of the other students gave me some relief. There they were, all caught up in their usual activities: some training, others chatting, and the routine unfolded with the same normalcy as always. The gym, with its heavy air of effort and focus, was the perfect refuge to push my restless thoughts away from what had just happened.
Author's note: I apologize if you found this chapter boring, it was difficult for me to write a scene where I had to describe feelings of love or flirtation between them, I'm very bad at this love thing.😿

Oikawa and Iwaizumi had been inseparable throughout high school, their love for each other evident to everyone around them. They had weathered challenges and obstacles together, and their bond had only grown stronger over time. But as college approached, the prospect of attending different universities came into play.
With a heavy heart, they made the painful decision to part ways, knowing that long distances would be difficult and uncertain. It was a mutual decision, born out of love and respect for each other's dreams and aspirations. They promised to stay in touch, but life had a way of getting busy, and their communication eventually dwindled.
Time passed, and two years went by without any contact between them. The ache of their separation lingered, and both Oikawa and Iwaizumi wondered what might have been. They had tried to move on, to focus on their studies and careers, but a piece of their hearts always felt incomplete.
Then came the high school reunion, an event that neither of them could avoid.

My Fics
Fic Recs
Hi! You can call me El, Lib, Libby, some variation of my username, I really don’t care. I use she/they pronouns, and I identify as asexual, aro-spec, sapphic, and queer. I’m also very much in favor of reclaiming slurs, so you might see me referring to myself and my friends as fags or dykes.
Note that I’m a therapist-in-training, I get very interested in psychoanalyzing characters from my favorite media, and I sort of know what I’m talking about. I am qualified to work with clients under a licensed and experienced professor’s supervision. HOWEVER. I’m not (and will never be) your therapist.
Minors, interact with caution. I don’t generally post things that I would consider inappropriate, but know that I’m an adult. Do not DM me if you’re a minor—I am absolutely not comfortable talking privately with you. Send it in an ask, please and thank you :)
I post very eclectically, and I’m not always great about tagging things. The few things you can expect from me are my one piece posting (under #one piece yapping and #libby watches one piece), various music things like compositions, practice videos, or just my thoughts (under #back on my music bullshit with practice videos under #practice log), political posts (under #politics or #us politics), and anything I find extremely funny (under #top tier posts). All of my original posts are tagged #libby shouts into the void, and I try to be consistent with tagging trigger warnings (formatted #tw [topic]).
Other fandoms that I’m always down to talk about, regardless of how often I post about them, include bare: a pop opera, Batman/Batfamily/DC Comics, BBC Merlin, Check Please! (omgcp), DanDaDan (ダンダダン), Danny Phantom, Dead Boy Detectives, Epic: the Musical, Frieren (葬送のフリーレン), Haikyuu!! (ハイキュー!!), Miraculous Ladybug, the Owl House, Percy Jackson, Princess Tutu, Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, and the Summer Hikaru Died (光が死んだ夏).
Topics and/or hyperfixations (outside of the previously mentioned fandoms) include bra-sizing, soundtracks/compositions/leitmotifs, contemporary music, Japanese (which I’m learning), and poetry/writing (my mostly defunct side blog is @elluminiswrites and you can find me on ao3 under elluminis).

Not so Lonley:
Haikyuu!-Fic,Spin-Off von „Lonley at the Top“
Lest weiter:
Meine „Haikyuu!!“-Fics:
Von gebrochenen Flügeln und geheilten Herzen
A/B/O-AU, Kagehina, Oikawa/Iwa, Kenma/Kuroo, Bokuto/Akaashi, Asahi/Noya, Takeda/Ukai, A/B/O-Dynamik, Angst, Seximus, Intersex (in Bezug aus das sekundäre Geschlecht), Verbitterung.
Lonley at the Top
All Our Troubles Will Be Out of Sight
