Nebula Romance: Part 1 is a redo of Perfume’s fifth studio album, Cosmic Explorer. And I ain’t mad at that. A Sci-Fi / space concept for an album and tour made sense for Perfume. So it’s a shame that they didn’t follow through with it for anything more than the album title track and the tour booklet.

But the idea of Nebula Romance: Part 1 and what it could’ve been is better and cooler than how it actually turned out. Because it’s cool to hear that Yasutaka Nakata seems to be having fun again, and for Perfume to have an album which has a discography highlight or two.

Nebula Romance Part 1, Perfume (2024)

Perfume really suited the new wave synthpop revival of the early 2020s (after all, it only really meant Yasutaka Nakata mellowing out the trio’s sound, making it a tad more accessible) but now they seem a little stuck in that style. The first Nebula Romance lands nowhere near as many punches as Plasma (though it does land some).

When the previews of Nebula Romance: Part 1 dropped, “Cosmic Treat” was the song that jumped out at me as an early favourite. So I felt a little deflated when the album dropped and I heard the full song. Not only was it super short with no bridge section — a far too common thing with Perfume’s songs these days — but it’s like Yasutaka Nakata didn’t know what to do with the intro and outro. So, I made a different mix of the song, with a different intro, outro and extra bits in the middle — for those who fancy a bit more funky beat and space funk.

If you had asked me what I expected to see in Perfume’s next music video, I would never have guessed a-chan, Kashiyuka and Nocchi walking around “Cling Cling” town killing everybody with guns.

One thing about Perfume’s album tours, they will have a raggedy setlist which does not [turns and looks into the camera] flow. And I’m expecting the Nebula Romance: Episode 1 Tour to be business as usual. So here’s a playlist of the setlist it should have, or shoulda had — depending on when you’ll see this post.
