愛の夢とか

『流れよわが涙、と警官は言った』を読み終わった。悪夢から覚めた朝みたいな読後感。むろんそれは解放感や安心感に似る。現実に迫る憂鬱の方が、よほど悪夢じみていることがある。

物語はある日突然、自分に関する全ての公的な証明や記録が消え失せて、誰も自分のことを覚えていない、何者でもなくなった男の話。こんな風にさらっとあらすじを書いてしまえば、なんてことはない、古典的な紋切り型のように��思われる。しかし、物語がそのような枠に囚われて矮小化しないのは、個別のキャラクターがドラマツルギーを無視して、自由に動き回り、発言するから。まるで現実みたいだ、と思う。

男はかつての情婦たちと出会い直す中で、現実を取り戻す手掛かりを得ようとする。その過程は、自分だけが当時の記憶や経験値を保ったまま、はじめからもう一度やり直そうとするような、誰もが一度は空想するような、たらればの世界を追体験するようでもある。しかし、情婦たちは既に年老いて、男が取り戻せるものは何もない。男が「なぜ愛はすばらしいのかね？」と繰り返し問うくだりがある。かつての情婦は、言葉を尽くして説明する。悲しみは愛の終局である。悲しみはあなたと失ったものをもう一度結びつける、と。けれども、とうとう男は理解できない。「いったいどうすばらしいんだね？」

昨年末に『ユービック』を読み終えた時も思ったけれど、SFは単なる空想科学の箱庭遊びではなくて、生の意味の異化だと思う。大森望の解説に、ディックの以下の発言が引用されていた。

わたしの恋している人間は、いつ死ぬかもしれないのだ。そこで、神とこの世界に対する激怒がわたしの体内を駆けめぐり、血圧が上がり、脈拍は速くなる。そこでわたしは書く。わたしの愛する人たちのことを書き、彼らを現実の世界ではなく、わたしの頭から紡ぎだされた架空の世界の中に住まわせようとする。現実の世界はわたしの基準に合わないからだ。わかってる、自分の基準を修正すべきなんだろうさ。わたしは足並みを乱している。わたしは現実と折れあうべきだ。だが、一度も折れあったことはない。SFとはそういうものなんだ。

関係ないけど、主人公がメスカリンらしき薬物を盛られてラリっている場面で、「脚が言うことをきかなくなっった(ボールド引用者)」と促音が重複している箇所があった。誤植？　薬物で呂律が回らなくなったことの表現かしら。友枝康子訳の、ハヤカワ文庫SF・新装版。

右腕に子を抱いて、左手に本を構える格好で読み遂せた。左手の親指を奇数ページ、小指を偶数ページに置いて、残りの3本の指は背表紙に置いて本を開く。ページを捲るときは、紙面に親指を滑らせる。手が乾いていると中々捲れない。子育てしながらだと、まとまった時間で映画を観るのは難しいけれど、こまめに本を読むことはできる。

「何をしているの？」

「あなたさえいれば十分さ」

会話が始まった。二人が暮らす部屋はもうずっと手狭だった。

腰に手を伸ばした。女のような柔肌に、あなたは相変わらず興奮していた。女ではだめなのだ。女のように、美しくないといけなかった。そう、あなたは、どこまでも偽物のわたしにほんとうを見出して、愛していた。

「監獄には何があると思う？」

昔は小麦のパンが並んでいた食卓も、少しずつその色合いにライ麦の黒が混ざっていって、最後にはそれすらも少しずつ小さくなっていった。ぼくらの憂鬱や絶望も、その暗闇に吸い込まれて小さく消え入ってくれればよかったのに。

あなたのどこまでも広い胸にもたれ掛かると、罪の象徴がちくちくとして痛かった。神はぼくらの睫毛の一本一本さえも咎として象ったという。ぼくらは裏切り者で、ずっと前にエデンを放逐されていた。そして、監獄での断罪からさえも、怯えて逃げ回っていた。

「監獄には何もないさ。ドラマツルギーな、最後の審判だってありはしない。ぼくらは引き裂かれて、感慨もなく死んでいくまでだ。」

そうしたらぼくらの罪は贖われるのだろうか？

疑問は室内に霧散した。愛のことばは埃となって、ベッドの上に降ってきた。階下ではどたどたと、何やら物騒な物音がし始めていた。

「ねえ」

「ん？」

「後悔は、していないかい？」

「していないさと言えば、嘘になる。けれど、けれど……」

「ねえ」

唐突に会話が断ち切れた。数瞬の沈黙のあと、

『わたしを監獄に連れて行ってはくれないか？』

二人の声が重なった。あとは言葉など要らなかった。ただ愛の為だけに唇を使った。だんだん階下の音は大きくなっていく。汚れることのない歌を歌おう。どこまでも綺麗な牢獄で、まじりあって、二人はほんとうになっていった。

ゲシュタポが突入すると、部屋の真ん中で、熊男と女男が頸動脈を刺しあって血を流しているばかりだった。「移送」対象者が自ら事切れているのは普通なら好都合だが、いまは戦況も劣勢で、いくらユダヤのゲイ二匹だとは言え、栄光の轍への貴重な労働資源になるはずだったろう。上官は不機嫌そうな顔で部屋を立ち去り、腹いせに大家をぶん殴ったのだった。

おもしろそう。前から「経済学SF」って開拓しがいがあると思ってた。かんべむさしの小説「ポトラッチ戦史」があるくらい*1 。／テッド・チャンのあれは「言語学SF」なので、こういうカテゴリ特化SFをもっと読みたい。

*1 経済学を題材にしたフィクションはいろいろあるようだ

私は「狼と香辛料」をはじめとして 「[C] THE MONEY OF SOUL AND POSSIBILITY CONTROL」(ブログでは話題にしたことない）とか 「ワールドエンドエコノミカ」(紹介記事）とか 「ハイパーインフレーション」(紹介記事）とか 「片喰と黄金」(紹介記事）とか 「羽月莉音の帝国」(言及してる記事）とか 「トリリオンゲーム」（紹介記事）みたいに経済ラノベ的な作品が大好き人間なのですが 「望郷太郎」はこれらの作品とは違う面白さがあると思う。 例えばハイパーインフレーションは各キャラクターのドラマツルギーを描くエンタメを重視しつつ「偽札作り」を通して通貨の力を語っていた。
