駅のエレベーターに乗り込むと、元恋人のつけていた香水の香りがした。この香りを懐かしく思える。きっと前に進めている。

高校時代の後輩と7年ぶりに会うことになった。かくいう高校時代は数回事務的な話をしただけで、上京してから共通の友人を介して会ってからふたりでデートもした。当時のわたしはかなり歳上の男に首ったけで、後輩とのせっかくのデートなのに「男の子はこうした方がいいよ〜」とか「大人の余裕があればな〜」とか失礼なことを言った気がする。それを怒りもせず「頑張りますから、またデート誘います」と言って終電より1時間も早い電車に乗せてくれた。勘は鈍くない方だと思う。次会ったら告白される予感がして、連絡を絶った。それ以来である。

どういうつもりか聞くのも野暮だなと思い、何も聞かずに承諾したが、どういうつもりなんだろう。結婚報告か、田舎に帰ることになったか、お金を貸してほしいのいずれかだと踏んでいる。ただ結婚をわざわざ報告するような間柄ではないからあるとしたら後の二つだろうか。

人の思いを踏みにじるのは容易い。踏みにじっている自覚が無ければ尚のこと。きっと彼から連絡が来なければ、7年前最悪のタイミングで連絡を絶ったことも忘れていた。

ここだけの話。

雨が止んだ気配がしたから外に出る。まるまると太った猫の"トモコ"が久しぶりに顔を出してくれた。妙に人間みたいな顔をしているので人面猫トモコと勝手に名付けてから早2年。毛艶からしてきっとどこかの飼い猫で、この太り方からしてこうしてほっつき歩いている時にご飯を差し出してくれるお家もいくつかありそう。トモコにはいくつ名前があるんだろう。

髪の毛を暖色に染めてから初めての出社。上司がやたらと「いいね、似合うね」と褒めるので気味が悪くて、先輩に聞くと「転職活動してないんだって、近々で辞めるって言い出さないと分かって嬉しいのよ」と言われた。オレンジ髪で転職活動する奴だっているだろ。いや、いないか。

満月だね、と言うと、残念まだカレーパンですと彼。確かに、まんまるではなかった。むっちりとしたカレーパンに見えてきた。

生活は続く。
