Bday gift for a friend who is, very correctly, a big fan of Ultra Mom! Nerd rant under the cut:

Yes I’m still angry that UGF2 nerfs Ultra Mother so badly and doesn’t let her do anything interesting. But they gave me something I DO really like, and that’s making her family the guardians of the Holy Sword of the Land of Light.

We hear basically nothing else about it, but the fact that Marie’s family is entrusted with what they’re straight-up calling a generational holy artifact has REALLY interesting implications. What does that make her family? Does she come from a long line of the Ultra equivalent of priests, or some form of royalty with a sacred artifact? They explicitly call the sword “holy/sacred,” which is interesting on its own, but there’s a cultural note I think is worth highlighting: Ken, who doesn’t know or recognize Marie at all here, recognizes the sword. *

I assume this wasn’t a conscious writing decision, but the sword is an artifact that’s either:

A: so famous that whoever’s guarding it isn’t really important, or,

B: legendary in the historical sense, and Marie’s family has been guarding it secretly for generations for a time like this

*it looks like Ken doesn’t know her, at least. Prior media implied that this is where they first met, but said media also said that Marie was the medic who revived Ken at this battle, and that never happens here so. Who knows? But given that Marie directly tells him that it’s been passed down in her family through generations, it does imply that, even if we assume he DOES know her somewhat (which again, never said and kinda implied to be the reverse), the sword part and any associated duties are news to him.

….actually going back and watching UGF2 ep 4 is super weird because you can watch it and have no idea if these people have met before or not. It’s super open-ended, and the line with Belial saying “she’s a fine woman—one worthy of me” actually makes way more sense if he’s had his eye on her for a while. What was I talking about?

I do get a little sentimental when I watch said Ultraman Christmas ad. It features a young Nadia Gifford singing the Wham! song "Last Christmas". Here's her cover in full. Simply adorable. (No More Heroes & Steambot Chronicles fans might know her work)

It's one of several ads by Tsuburaya from the 90s that features the Ultraman family, as well as their alien & kaiju enemies celebrating Christmas. They were sorta like those Sainsbury or John Lewis store Christmas ads.

For whatever reason, some of these ads ship Ultraman with his enemy Dada. Lady Dada isn't bad. She was just born this way (Sorry, I just had to).

I've seen YST a dozen times and I'll watch it a thousand more because I swear I always find more little details with each viewing.

Which, this plays very nicely into my headcanon of Touma being a huge tokusatsu fan...
