November 20th, 2024: Congratulations are in order for Kyoto's newest geiko! Masako (槇沙子) of Nishimura (西村) in Gion Kobu is celebrating her erikae! She is the third imōto of natori geiko Makiko (槇子), also of Nishimura, to have her erikae and is the second of three erikae for her district over the past month. Although you can't see it, there are fish on Masako's hiyoku (the white second hem of her kimono), a nod to her hometown that's known for fishing! Her outfit features treasure ships and treasures among waves and a golden wave obi ^^ おめでとうさんどす槇沙子さん ^o^! Image is courtesy of a friend who wishes to remain anonymous.

2023.03.16（Sat） 新幹線がようやく開通しました。 ところで「光る君へ」のテーマ曲を作曲した冬野ユミさんの「Amethyst」。 新婚旅行に福井県の越前海岸で見た海が、「濃い青、群青色というか紫というか、あの海の色がテーマ曲に反映されている」と語られています。 どこか切なげで、紫式部の感情というか心の揺らぎをあらわしているようなこの曲が、福井の海のイメージを表現しているのかと思うと、より一層愛着を感じるようになった。

The Pictural Heart-Sūtra

The E-shin-gyou is a pictorial version of the Heart Sutra. It was invented in the Edo period to fulfill the wishes of "people who could not read" who wanted to share in the merits of the Heart Sutra.

絵心経とは、絵であらわした般若心経のこと。江戸時代、般若心経の功徳にあやかりたいという「字の読めない人々」の願いをかなえようと工夫されたものである まず摩訶には、逆さまにした釜の絵をあてる、般若は、能などで使う般若の面である、波羅には、腹の絵をもってくる、蜜多は農具の箕と田んぼの絵をつなげて箕田と読ませる、心経の部分に来るのは、神前にたてる神鏡という按配で当て字ならぬ当て絵で表記されたもので重宝がられてベストセラーとなった。 江戸時代には、般若心経への信仰は、天皇公家から農工商にまで広がって定着した。

December 5th and 7th, 2024: Double congratulations are in order for two new geiko! Kohatsu (小はつ) of Shigemori (しげ森) in Miyagawa Cho and Haruchizu (櫻千鶴) of Tama (多麻) in Gion Kobu are celebrating their erikae! Kohatsu is the second imōto of Kofuku (小ふく), also of Shigemori, to have her erikae while Haruchizu, who is the imōto of Mamechizu (豆千鶴) of Nomura (野村), is the third of Mamechizu's imōto to have her erikae. Both women have been preparing for this day for a while and suit the geiko look so well! Kohatsu's ensemble features poems among rice sheaths with a golden karabana obi while Haruchizu's ensemble features genjikō, pine, and plum blossoms with a golden bamboo obi ^^ おめでとうさんどす小はつさんと櫻千鶴さん ^o^!
