Alolan Raichu's Dark Origins
Yes, the title is kind of clickbait. No, it’s not incorrect. Bear with me here. It’s rare that a theory like this holds water.

Alolan Raichu is a sweet, fairly unassuming mon on the surface. However, with new information that has surfaced from the recent GameFreak “Teraleak”, its behavior and origins are painted in an… interesting light.
This post kind of got away from me. If you don’t care about the nitty-gritty, here’s the TL;DR: Alolan Raichu adapted from a diet of alien drug pancakes. No, this is not a joke.
First, let me preface this. I do not speak Japanese and do not claim to. All translations shown here are done in DeepL and/or Google Translate, or an amalgamation cross-referenced. While I have verified that my ideas hold water with someone who does speak Japanese (@kiskeym on Twitter / @boh.nonso on Medium), I do not have a full direct human translation.
Okay, so, let me provide some background. Some of the documents contained within the Teraleak were development profiles on Pokémon from gens 3 through 7. Of particular interest are the gen 5-7 ones, which contain information that came back later in various dex entries (particularly, I’ve noticed, in SwSh and SV) and other tidbits supported by canon. As these are from close to release and have come back later, I think it’s safe to say that the lore in these is canon. Most of the changes between these profiles and release comes from gameplay changes– I’ve only managed to locate one lore change, and that’s in Golurk. By Alola, these profiles were even being done alongside the concept art, as Palossand’s directly references it. Ergo, I’m treating these as canon. (Not 3 or 4, as those are too early in development, have a lot more changes, and don’t cover every mon in their respective gens.) I’d like to do, or help with, a full deep dive into these at some point in the future, but for now, I just wanted to get this out there.
That said, the information I’m providing here is frequently alluded to in various tidbits in games released after SM– I will provide those sources when necessary. This is almost certainly canon, outside of its scrapped gameplay integration.
(One more sidenote-- I've put leaked profiles in blue, official in-game content in orange, and supplementary material-- in this case, websites-- in green.)
Okay, enough preamble. 
Alolan Raichu’s adaptation is, in the games, played off as somewhat of a mystery, oddly enough. The Sun and Moon website says “Even Pokémon researchers don’t know why Raichu’s form changed in the Alola region.” Sword also says “It's believed that the weather, climate, and food of the Alola region all play a part in causing Pikachu to evolve into this form of Raichu.” Both of these have some sort of uncertainty to them– while there’s folklore about Raichu’s adaptation, the true cause is only through belief. The only consistent factor brought up is Raichu’s diet. The leaked profile expands upon this in an… interesting way. The Japanese text is as follows:
幻とされるデザート『スペシャル・パンケーキ(仮)』を食べることで進化する。
パンケーキに必要な食材はウルトラホールに起因するとされるもので、アローラ地方にしか存在しない。食材は熟練の職人により特殊な毒抜きをしない限り可食できず、そのレシピも、アローラ料理界において秘伝とされている。古老による口伝で語り継がれるのみで、知る者は極めて少ない。
A rough translation of this is:
It evolves by eating the mythical dessert "Special Pancake (tentative name)". 
The ingredients needed for the pancakes are said to come from Ultra Wormholes and only exist in the Alola region. The ingredients are inedible unless a skilled craftsman removes the poison in a special way, and the recipe is also considered a secret in the world of Alola cuisine. It has only been passed down orally by elders, and very few people know it.
This is already hugely interesting, regardless of the later conclusion. Even if you disagree with said later conclusion, this is still definitely fascinating info. It does mention a scrapped evolution item, the ‘Special Pancake’, but this is far from the only case of scrapped and altered evolution methods in these profiles– another example is Alolan Grimer originally being planned to evolve by use of a crystal shed from Alolan Muk. However, we know from Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee that the Special Pancake still exists in the lore:
It loves pancakes prepared with a secret Alolan recipe. Some wonder whether that recipe holds the key to this Pokémon's evolution. 
So, Alolan Raichu adapted because of extradimensional pancakes. Crazy.
It gets weirder. Another excerpt from the profiles says
ほっぺのでんきぶくろを揉みしだくと、カスタードクリームと洋酒(仮)が混ざったような甘い香りがすることで有名。その理由は解明されていないが、サイコパワーを高めると香りが強まる為、超能力に由来する現象とされている。その香りには謎の中毒性があり、��好家は感電防止の策を講じてそれを嗅ぐことに臨む。
Which roughly translates to
It is famous that when you squeeze the electric sac on its cheek, it gives off a sweet scent that resembles a mixture of custard cream and liquor (tentative). The reason for this is unknown, but since the scent gets stronger as the psychic power increases, it is believed to be a phenomenon that originates from psychic power. The scent is mysteriously addictive, and enthusiasts take measures to prevent electric shock when they try to smell it.
The Japanese word used for ‘addictive’ here is, in fact, a word frequently used to describe addictive drugs. This addictive scent has been alluded to in games after this, also, particularly in Ultra Moon:
When you rub its cheeks, a sweet fragrance comes wafting out. However, you'll also get a light shock! 
The aforementioned Pokemon Sun and Moon website also relays this information:
Raichu has electric sacs on its cheeks, and rubbing them causes a sweet aroma to be released. The mechanism behind this is not clear, but it’s thought to be connected to the psychic power that Alolan Raichu possess.
This directly reflects the profile. So, the pancakes made with ingredients from Ultra Space made safe for eating by an expert, give Alolan Raichu psychic powers (since it adapted to have them as a result of this diet) that are directly correlated with an addictive scent. The profiles also specify one more detail, this time about Alolan Raichu’s personality:
実際の性情も大人しくボーっとしたもので、何事においても動じず、常に笑みをたたえている。
This roughly translates to:
Its actual nature is also quiet and absent-minded, unfazed by anything and always smiling.
This is in direct contrast to Raichu’s usual nature, characterized frequently in the Pokedex as becoming aggressive when it has too much electricity stored:
It turns aggressive if it has too much electricity in its body. It discharges power through its tail.
When electricity builds up inside its body, it becomes feisty. It also glows in the dark.
These specific instances are from Brilliant Diamond and Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee respectively, but there are several more. This means that Alolan Raichu’s personality changed with its adaptation as well.

So, in short, we’ve got pancakes made with poisonous extradimensional ingredients, purified by experts, that give Alolan Raichu psychic powers connected to an addictive scent and make it quiet, absent-minded, and unflappable. While nothing is explicit here, outside the mention of the scent being addictive, this is certainly reminiscent of common portrayals of various kinds of drugs.

Kirby Planet Robobot Translation Comparison: Pause Screens (Part 2)

This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.
Specifically, this will cover the pause screen descriptions of all bosses faced exclusively in the extra modes of the game.
While I’m mainly comparing the US English version to the Japanese one, I’ll bring up differences in the EU English version that I find notable, too.
For the comparisons, the usual points apply:
Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
Italicized is the official NOA translation.
A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.
Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.

And since a lot of these pause descriptions are somewhat connected to their counterparts of the main story as well, I would recommend reading the previous part first, if you haven’t already.
Also, as a general note, you’ll see that all the stronger versions of the regular bosses have the prefix “Re:” added in the Japanese version.
This was changed to “2.0″ in the English version.
From what I’ve seen, “Re:” in Japanese pop culture is often used as a cool, sometimes futuristic way to refer to a “renewal” of something, so adapting it as “2.0″ makes sense.

Clanky Woods has been redesigned and upgraded. Better fuel efficiency and fewer emissions demonstrate the company's new environmentally friendly initiative. It costs only half of the previous model!

Comparisons & Thoughts:
The description has been slightly shortened as usual, though there are some potential errors or changes, too.

In the English version, the text mentions “the company’s new environmentally friendly initiative”, whereas the Japanese version doesn’t make it sound like this would be a new thing for them.
It’s possible that this was a mistranslation, but it could also be that they intentionally changed it in English to be a little more obvious about the irony - because the Haltmann Works Company allegedly trying to be environmentally friendly is ridiculous.

Also, in the Japanese version, the original wording makes it more clear that Clanky Woods’ price being reduced is seemingly referring to the cost a potential buyer would have to pay for it, rather than the cost of producing it.
This feels like it might be alluding to how in real life, manufacturers of electric cars or the like will try to cut down their prices to some degree in order to get more people into them, and thus creating more of a demand for them in the future.
The English version could be going for that as well, but it’s a bit less clear.

This directly implies other things have been based on such blueprints, but it doesn’t specify which those are, nor how many blueprints and planets are involved.
From its looks though, we can gather that the Holo Defense API was likely based on Pix from Rock Star, as seen in Kirby 64.
Similarly, we can assume that the Security Force mid-boss was likely based on Metal General from Halcandra, as seen in Return to Dream Land.
And of course, Star Dream is heavily implied to be something similar to Galactic Nova from Milky Way Wishes - and both of them are implied to be so-called clockwork stars, also first mentioned in Return to Dream Land.
But even considering all that, keep in mind that we still can’t say for sure where and when the Haltmann Works Company would have precured any of their respective blueprints, and series director Shinya Kumazaki intentionally left the answer up in the air when asked about it during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon on Miiverse.
Just so we are all on the same page here.
In any case, the English version is still missing the indication that the Holo Defense API isn’t the only one that was based on blueprints found elsewhere.
The EU English version actually goes one step further, rephrasing the line in question to say that the defence system was built “based on the blueprint found on another planet”.
The wording of “the blueprint” would imply there was only ever one, which does not appear to be the case in Japanese.

There is some potential issue here regarding the usage of plural versus singular.
In my translation of the Japanese version, I have the description refer to dragons in a general sense, rather than one individual dragon.
The English version chose to use singular instead, for the most part.
As I mentioned before, there usually is no clear distinction between plural and singular in Japanese, so either way could work here.
That being said, the English version would still be slightly off, because if one chooses to use singular for the translation here, it has to be applied to all of the text.
If I were to apply singular for my own translation, it would become this:

The latter would imply that from the perspective of our vague narrator, the People of the Sky were known, but also previously thought to possibly not exist anymore.
In contrast, the former implies the land of the sky is only just being discovered.

Next, the Japanese version notes that there are still many “uncivilized areas” on Pop Star, following the prior statement that the land of the sky has yet to be reached by the invasion.
The English version changes this to stating that the People of the Sky have yet to be reached by the invasion “due to their remote location”.
This might have been an intentional change to sound less demeaning, but I can’t say for sure.
Really, this mostly changes the narrator’s attitude about the situation, since the Japanese phrasing still would imply that the company just needs more time to reach Floralia and other locations further away from their operations.
Also just for the reference, the word “areas” is once again the same one they use for the game’s main levels as well, keeping with the game’s aesthetic.

As an aside, the general narrator of these descriptions is not really a character, so slight differences in their limited knowledge and attitude about the world like in the two previous points are not that big of a deal.
But it’s interesting to me that in this description right here for example, the Japanese version of the narrator seems to roughly reflect the knowledge and attitude that the Haltmann Works Company would have.
In other places, the narrator’s knowledge and general perspective does shift to other sides too, I’m guessing to fit the mood that works best for each description.

Also, I mentioned in the last part how it’s strange that the English version didn’t just go for the shorter “Holo-Rattler” as the name, and this choice comes back to haunt them here, cause they had to spell “Holo-Coily Rattler 2.0″ as “Holo-C. Rattler 2.0″ to make it fit.

I’m guessing the English version changed it because “Familia” might’ve seemed too on the nose about it?
Going by that, I think “Patrya” might be based on something like “patriarch” and related terms, which would also allude to the story surrounding Susie’s character.
The actual description is mostly the same, just rephrased to be shorter.

I think going for “Stock” here is pretty clever, boiling down the idea to its bare essentials, and with such little space, too.
The actual description is mostly the same, just rephrased to be slightly shorter.

There is a pretty significant alteration or possible error in this description.

In the Japanese version, it’s stated that the company has given up on cloning Dedede’s “heart” because several prototypes ended up being imperfect soldiers.
What this means is that cloning his “heart” is actually possible for them to some extent, but since that causes the clones to take on parts of Dedede’s personality, it made them worse as soldiers.
So, they have given up on cloning the heart specifically because the clones having one has proven to be a detriment for their purposes.
In the English version, it’s instead stated that the company is unable to clone Dedede’s “soul”, because “some things can’t be cloned”.
In turn, the issues with the trial models are also implied to be unrelated general cloning issues.
So, while the Japanese version somewhat eerily states that cloning a heart is possible, but the company is now making the clones heartless on purpose, the English version seems like almost the complete opposite and states that cloning a soul is just not possible.
This could have been a translation error, but it could also be that the English localizers wanted to avoid crossing a certain line here and thus changed it intentionally.

Continuing from the previous point though, you may have noticed that the Japanese version uses “heart” while the English version uses “soul”.
The actual Japanese word used here is 心/kokoro, which is most commonly translated as “heart”, but it can also be translated as “soul” like the English version did - and also as “mind”, or even “feelings”, as well as other things like that depending on the context.
Because of that, it can have different connotations than just the English word “soul” on its own.
I think “heart” is a broad enough term that it works well here, and the Kirby series has a frequent heart motif as well, so I went with that, personally.
The term will also be brought up again in future descriptions down the line, so keep it in mind for later.

Also, Haltmann’s own mech is revealed to be called “Presidenver” in Japanese, which was changed to “Executive Suit” in English.
Either one goes along with the name of Susie’s mech, but since its name was omitted in the English version, this fact doesn’t come across there.

“Executive Suit” might be a play on “executive suite”, which is pretty amusing to me.

“Gains Income” is obviously taken directly from “gains income”. Aside from probably referring to the fact that he’s about earning money, this also is another English-sounding name to go with the company’s aesthetic.
“Max Profitt” is a similar play on earning money, but done in a way that works better as a pun-based name for English-speaking audiences.
The actual description has one fairly notable omission in particular.

In the Japanese version, it’s specifically stated that Haltmann has been “casting aside his heart and even his memories“, which is not mentioned in English.
The fact that Haltmann doesn’t have all his memories anymore is crucial to understanding the story at this point, so leaving this out caused a lot of confusion for English-speaking fans around the time of the game’s release.
It would eventually be brought up again during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon, so fans did get to learn about this, but it was still an inconvenience.
Not to mention that Miiverse has since been shut down.
The detail about Haltmann’s “heart” is interesting as well, since it gives additional insight into how Haltmann has presumably grown more callous over the years as well, rather than starting out the way we see him in the present day.
For the reference, the English Miiverse post adapted this as “compassion”, which works perfectly fine in this context, too.

First of all, the Japanese version is once again written from the perspective of Star Dream, as seen by its unmistakable speaking style.
However, unlike in the main story, Star Dream does not refer to itself in first-person here at any point.
Since the Soul OS battle seems to roughly follow after the events of Meta Knightmare Returns, this might reflect how Star Dream presumably never gained its own sense of self in that scenario, but that’s just a guess on my part.
Either way, in the English version this description does not seem to be written directly from Star Dream’s perspective.
If this is the case, it might have been an oversight, but I can’t say for sure.
I do think this is a shame, because it’s a nice callback to its final pause screen from the main story, and also may become more impactful once you see the remaining pause screens from this current boss battle.

A smaller detail, but the Japanese version specifies that the final program was unlocked by “Unknown DAMAGE”, which may refer to the cut done by Galacta Knight - as it can still be seen on Star Dream here.

In the English version, it’s stated that Star Dream has yet to purge “a small part” of Haltmann’s “soul”, and that this could be detrimental for it.
But in the Japanese version, Star Dream instead comes to the conclusion that Haltmann’s “HEART” will be innecessary. It also proceeds with the erasure of the “MEMORY” of Haltmann, which the English version does not yet bring up.
This results in some different potential implications here.
In the English version, the usage of “soul” would suggest that this must be Haltmann’s actual soul or spirit, but it’s not quite the same in Japanese.
While these extra stories only have vague continuity, keep in mind that as far as we know, Haltmann was never actually taken over directly by Star Dream in this scenario.
If this was meant to refer to Haltmann’s spirit, they could’ve easily used the same word for spirit they used during the final battle of the main story.
But instead, they use the same term “heart” that has already come up before in the descriptions for Dedede Clone 2.0 and Haltmann 2.0, which this current description also seems to follow up on.
Just like in the Dedede Clone 2.0 description, a heart is deemed as a flaw by Star Dream here. And we know from the Haltmann 2.0 description that Haltmann has been casting aside his own heart too, in a way.
This goes into speculation territory, but one could assume based on this that the “heart” of Haltmann which Star Dream currently possesses is the same heart that Haltmann has cast aside, either literally or figuratively.
Again, remember how the Dedede Clone 2.0 description confirmed that a heart is something that can artificially be reproduced in some form, so it wouldn’t have to literally be the same.
In any case, Star Dream’s method to rid itself of this “heart” is to start erasing the “MEMORY” of Haltmann.
This could mean that at the very least, the memories that Haltmann has lost over the years are stored or documented within Star Dream in some form.
Though not from the pause screen, further evidence of this is the fact that the objects summoned by Star Dream during its respective third phase are officially called “MEMORIES”.
And while they are all parts of Galactic Nova, they also all relate to specific details about Haltmann that were revealed in a Nintendo Dream interview (June 2016 issue.)
The Soul OS version of the attack also adds piano keys, a possible reference to Susie’s own profile mentioning that she plays the piano.

That last point was rather long, so to summarize it briefly:
While the English version suggests that Star Dream here contains Haltmann’s soul or spirit, much like in the main story, the situation appears to be a bit different in Japanese, given how the term “heart” can be used - and how it has been used in the game so far.

Just like the previous one, there are several notable details about this description.

Now, in both versions, this pause screen appears to be from Haltmann’s perspective, though the English version actually added quotation marks to it.
This could have been to make it more clear that this is from a specific person’s perspective, but the same was never done with Star Dream’s narration.
There could be another reason for this, which I’ll go over next.

Here’s a subtle detail you might not have caught.
While this is most likely Haltmann narrating here, the Japanese version has him refer to himself with the first person pronoun わたし/watashi.
In the actual story, he only ever used ワシ/washi to refer to himself.
But here’s the thing: in fiction, having a character refer to themselves as ワシ/washi is generally used to indicate that the character is old, and just by comparison, わたし/watashi sounds younger.
This could imply that this quote might in fact be from a time where Haltmann was at least somewhat younger than he is now.
In other words, a memory from the past, rather than a current thought in the present.
Being shown a memory of Haltmann at this point would also fit with Star Dream’s narration from the previous pause screen.
Because of that, I think the English version could be using the quotation marks to indicate this temporal distance, since they can’t really show it in the same way the Japanese version does.
But I can’t say for sure if that was the intent.

The Japanese version has Haltmann mention that he did not know who made the machine he’s talking about here, which is most likely Star Dream.
Interesting backstory tidbit there, if you’re curious about these.

Also in the Japanese version, Haltmann believes that a machine can’t actually make dreams come true in general. Though, we can’t know if he is correct about that.
In the English version, Haltmann only comes to the conclusion that no machine could make his specific dream come true.

On that note, Haltmann is never shown to recall what his dream was in the first place in Japanese, he only says that he must have had one.
In the English version, he explicitly remembers wanting to see “her” again being his dream.
It seems like almost a given that Haltmann’s dream here is referring to his wish of being reunited with his daughter, so it makes sense that the English version would change the text to make it obvious.
There is a non-zero chance that Haltmann actually had another dream, but that’s a whole different topic.

This is the final description, so of course there is a lot to say again.

A minor detail, but in the Japanese version it’s said that the memory of Haltmann has now disappeared from “this core”, which is pretty straightforward, all things considered.
For some reason, the US English version instead says that Haltmann’s memories have been deleted “from the OS”, and the EU English version says they have been deleted “from the Mother Computer”.
This is also the first time the memories are brought up in English at all, so their relevance is a lot less clear.
And another minor detail related to this one.
I believe the specific phrasing of “disappeared from this core, too” in Japanese is meant to refer to the fact that Haltmann’s memories had already been lost by the man himself.
At least, that makes the most sense to me.

Once again, the English version uses “soul” where the Japanese version used “heart”.
The distinction between the two becomes especially important here, because while the English version says it’s the “soul” of Haltmann, the Japanese text is more vague about it.
Of course, the first Japanese pause screen of this battle did refer to it as the “heart” of Haltmann, but at the same time, remember that this would have basically been Star Dream’s own heart as well.
This also seems to be the implication going by the lines that follow afterwards.

Interestingly, the Japanese version describes Star Dream as having been a “perfect being”, whereas the English version just goes for “near-perfect being”.
This is very similar to how they changed Kirby’s energy from being described as “infinite” to “nearly infinite” in the main story.
I suppose they just don’t want to deal in absolutes with these.
The English version also goes on to describe Star Dream as now being a “cold, mindless machine”, instead of just a “broken machine” like in Japanese, which has different implications.
Star Dream being actually broken and not functioning as it should is another point that Kumazaki reiterated during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon, so that’s another plot detail the English version technically omits here.
The English phrasing also leans more into the idea of Star Dream being a scary opponent, while the Japanese phrasing leans more into the idea of Star Dream being something pitiful - a similar sentiment to the descriptions of the main story’s final battle.

Adding to the point above, the English version also omits the final part of this last description.
The phrase “It doesn’t have dreams, it doesn’t even eat lunch“ references a recurring concept first introduced in the manual of Kirby’s Adventure - the fact that the people of Dream Land, and Kirby especially, love to take naps after lunch to have fun dreams.
This was referenced in the Japanese version of Kirby Super Star as well, where the pause screen description during the Starship segment of Milky Way Wishes features the line:
マルクのやぼうを さっさとくいとめ、 ゴハンたべて ねよう。
Let's stop Marx real quick, then have lunch and a nap.
That’s another Milky Way Wishes connection only in the Japanese version, but said line also wasn’t featured in the English version of Kirby Super Star in the first place.
And since the “Kirby of the Stars” title is also not really used in the English localizations of the Kirby series, it would have been hard to make this final bit of the pause description work, even if space weren’t an issue.
I think the Japanese version is stronger for having it, but there probably wasn’t much the English version could have done about this.

With all of the point-by-point comparisons out of the way here, I want to take a moment to go into some general thoughts on this battle as a whole and what each version implies about it.
Naturally this will have a bit more speculation on my part too, so keep that in mind.
If you only look at the English version, the implication you get is that during the Star Dream Soul OS battle, Star Dream is fused with Haltmann’s actual soul, in a similar manner to the events of the main story. (Even though those events may not have happened in the extra scenarios.)
It must be Haltmann’s own soul, because the English Dedede Clone 2.0 description states that a soul cannot be cloned.
Star Dream then proceeds to delete Haltmann’s last memories as well as his soul, because Haltmann’s soul had a chance of stopping its plan. (Even though it had no apparent issues about fusing with his spirit in the main story.)
Therefore, during this battle Haltmann is essentially killed “deader than dead” by Star Dream, for the lack of a better wording - his very soul eradicated for good.
The middle pause screen during the battle may be thought of as Haltmann’s final thoughts before ultimate oblivion in this interpretation.
I don’t think this is just what I myself take away from the English version, because this is the most common interpretation I have seen from English-speaking fans over the years.
It can come across as a tragedy in which Haltmann is finally destroyed for good by a terrible machine he could never truly control.
Now, onto the Japanese version.
The exact details leave more room for speculation, because of how vague the term 心/kokoro or “heart” can be.
But the way I understand it is that Star Dream has been storing the memories that Haltmann has been losing over the years.
In addition to that, it would likely have data on Haltmann’s current memories and thoughts as well, as seen in the main story.
From this, it gained the “heart” of Haltmann, or at least a partial reproduction of it, allowing it to feel and think in a way similar to Haltmann. Just like the early Dedede clones with cloned hearts acting similar to King Dedede in various ways.
However, Star Dream never fuses with Haltmann’s spirit in the extra scenarios.
Because of that, it never gains its own sense of self, and fails to understand the purpose of a heart, deeming it a potential flaw to be purged, just as it did with the updated Dedede clones.
Thus, it deletes the memories of Haltmann, which brought about the heart in the first place, and thus loses said heart again, becoming a lifeless object once more - no longer able to think and feel anything.
And there is another subtle detail in the Japanese version related to that, too.
During this battle, the first description is narrated by Star Dream, the second seems to show a memory of Haltmann, and the final one goes back to the general narrator.
This could possibly represent the transition of Star Dream starting out with that heart, sifting through the memories to delete them, and finally having become just a machine again, so it no longer has any thoughts that could serve as the narration.
This potentially paints the Soul OS battle specifically more as a tragedy of Star Dream itself. A machine that achieved the miracle of being alive with a heart, but proceeded to undo said miracle all on its own, without even realizing what it was really doing.
Also, Kumazaki only specified this on Miiverse, but Haltmann losing his memories from overusing Star Dream was also because it was broken.
So this was never something that was supposed to really happen in this way, had it functioned properly.
Overall, Star Dream can feel like more of a tragic figure in the Japanese version, and more of a villainous figure in the English one.
Several small differences between the versions across the game reflect this, with moments painting Start Dream as pitiful or even pathetic being altered or omitted.
However, this is a very general summary of it, the Japanese version still has Star Dream being the main antagonist, and the English version has plenty of moments where the tragic aspects to Star Dream are still apparent.

Final Thoughts on the Pause Screens:
First, let me say, I am very impressed by the English localization of these pause screens.
Really, look up these screens for yourself some time, they pushed these to their limits. Almost every single one of them is crammed full with as much text as they could possibly fit in.
Yes, they still had to cut a lot out here and there, but clearly not from lack of trying.
Of course, the fact of the matter still ends up being that the Japanese version simply has more good stuff in it.
A lot of stuff is “expendable”, but losing fun fluff all the time adds up, I feel.
The extra modes pause screens especially also feature a few major errors or alterations, as well as omissions that do end up being detrimental to the story in some form.
The biggest one I feel is the fact that Haltmann’s memory loss is not brought up at all, because that one detail is the puzzle piece that makes everything fall into place and let’s the player finally understand what is going on with the emotional core of the story.
So much of the details regarding Star Dream are up to interpretation, so I’m perfectly willing to let the broader details be, but the Japanese version still does a better job of dropping small details earlier on that become relevant for it at the end.
And it’s not just Star Dream, the Japanese version overall has more of these smaller connections and continuity across the pause screens, and connections to the actual story contents as well. So they feel more like smaller pieces in a carefully crafted whole, where everything is interconnected and enriches the story.
Again, the English version probably couldn’t have done much different here, due to the difficult conditions translators and localizers usually have to work with - lack of context, lack of time, limited space, etc.
I guess what I am getting at is that I do prefer the Japanese version, and would recommend fans to check it out (though if you are reading this, I suppose you already have), but don’t assume this means I have a disdain for English version.
It’s very well done, considering the circumstances.

Time to talk volumes 25 and 26! I said I would translate the afterwords for both volumes together, and I have regrets. So, it’s a week late, but I finally finished.
Why did I put volumes 25 and 26 together? Because each contains about half of the 5 chapter long “Village of the Sleeping Vessel” arc, and because they were treated as two halves of a whole. As you can see above, both the cover illustrations and the afterword illustrations are part of a set: complementary Natori/Matoba covers and complementary Natsume/Tanuma illustrations. Because I’ve never compared these two pairings or anything.
The covers are interesting for the way they seem to reflect Natori and Matoba’s contrasting points of view. But I’m most personally interested in the afterword illustrations because they seem rather optimistic to me, and because they tell a story. While the first half was melancholy, and seemed to suggest that Natsume and Tanuma would be drawn to each other even if Natsume were hopelessly cut off from the human world, the second half seems to show Tanuma being able to cross that line and come see him anyway.

この先ネタバルとなりますので最後に読んでいただけるち嬉しいです。
25巻目となり夏目たちの関係性も変わりつつある中、夏目友人長を描き始めた頃にいつかやってみたいなと思っていたお話もやっと描けるようになってきました。話を思いつきつつも初期の頃の夏目やニャンコ先生でほうまくビジョンが浮かばずやれなかったものが少しづつ描き取れるようになってきました。
反対に初期これがやりたいと思いつつ、今の関係性ではもうそこはクリアしてしまったから描くことは出来なくなったなという話がいくつかあります。簡単には寄り添えなかった頃の夏目でしか表現出来ないような話が使えなくなった事が寂しいような、それもまた良いかと思えるような不思議な気持ちです。そんな描くには時期を外してしまった話も形や方向を変えてちゃんと育てていつかまた見えたらぜひ描いていってみたいと思っています。

Spoilers follow, so please read this last.
With volume 25 and relationships between Natsume and others changing, I’m finally able to draw the stories I wanted to draw when I first began Natsume Yuujinchou. As I think up stories, I’ve been able to gradually write down things that I couldn’t draw in the beginning, when I didn’t have a clear vision for Natsume or Nyanko-Sensei.
On the other hand, there are things I wanted to draw in the beginning but can no longer do because that issue is already settled in the current relationship. To put it simply, it’s sad* that I can no longer use the kind of story that can only be expressed by a Natsume who doesn’t get close to others, but I have a funny feeling it’s also a good thing.** In order to draw that kind of story, I’d like to change the form and direction of the stories for which I missed the time period and develop them properly, and if I see a chance again I’d definitely like to draw one someday.
“Sad” here is sabishii, which is commonly translated as lonely or desolate, but can also refer to the melancholy of something no longer existing. ** Fun fact: she used this same “funny/strange feeling” expression when she said Tanuma was the reason for the “characteristic distance” between him and Natsume.
{Note: in addition to the afterword illustrations, Volume 25’s afterword background is illustrated with silhouettes of the Mid-rank yokai on their mission, as well as what appears to be Nishimura, Kitamoto, and Taki. Also the kitty brigade. Also Sensei in a suit for the anniversary bit. Volume 26 is arranged differently and does not have background illustrations. Additionally, the only mini illustration in 26 is this at the very beginning:

16ページという事で何が入るか悩んだのですが中級達の得体の知れなさも出せるものを描いてみたいなとやってみました。連載が長いので時々、自分にこっそりお題を出して描く事があるのですが(例えば『つきひぐい』の回はモノローグ禁止とか)せっかく小ページの回なので「主人公を描かない」を。けれど描いてみて夏目が出ていないとなんとなく閉鎖的な感じもして、そこが新鮮でもあり反面、異種間の緩衝材的な存在は大事だなと再確認した回でした。
Special 21
I was worried about what I could fit into 16 pages, but I wanted to try to draw something that would display the mysteriousness of the Mid-Rank yokai. As the series is so long, I sometimes draw something where a secret problem for myself appears (for example, in “Tsukihigui” monologues were forbidden). For these rare few pages, it was “the protagonist can’t appear.” But when I started drawing it, it somehow felt closed off without Natsume appearing, and while that was novel on the one hand, it also reaffirmed that some kind of buffer between species was important.
第百·百一·百ニ話~ 依代*の眠る里
百回記念日という事で担当さんと話し合って久しぶりに長めのお話を描かせていただけることになり感激でした。いつもなら登場したらすぐ帰ってしまうキャラ達をもう少しじっくり描けるのは本当に嬉しくて。
初期から描いてみたい話だったのでワクワクしつつも、アレと同じ形がいっぱいいたと言う事にジョックを受ける方もいるのではと気を引き締めながら描きました。田沼やタキといる時は自然でいられるようになってきた夏目ですが、祓い屋としての名取や的場といる時は強くあろうとする面があるのか、かえってそういうものが意外に脆さになるのかも知れないなと描いていて感じました。
成長したから出てくる不安定なものも描きとっていけたらなと思っています。
Chapter 100, 101, 102: Village of the Sleeping Vessel
I was moved when, after talking with my editor about commemorating the 100th chapter, I was given a chance to write the first long story in a long time. I was really happy to be able to put a little more care into characters that normally leave as soon as they appear.
At the same time as I was excited to be able to do a story I’ve wanted to draw since the beginning, I was also bracing myself that some people would be shocked by so many of the same shape. Natsume has gotten to the point where he can be natural around Tanuma or Taki, but with exorcists like Natori or Matoba, there’s a side where he tries to be strong, and I felt while drawing like that sort of thing might, all the more, unexpectedly turn fragile.
I think it would be nice if I could keep drawing uncertain** things that appear as a result of growing up.
* “Vessel” here explicitly refers to vessels designed to be occupied by kami, known as yorishiro.
** This “uncertain” is actually the same “unstable” that she used when talking about Natsume and Tanuma’s “unstable worlds,” (aka my blog title) so I was a little startled to see it here! It’s also super-vague, which always makes me Suspicious.
特別編22 8ページという事で悩みました。小ページだからいっそいっぱい描きたいキャラを出そうと言う事でみんなに話を聞いてまわる話にしてみたいなと。パトロールは大事ですよね。

The 1/4 space on the left side of the page has been familiar in comics for a long time, but it’s missing from this volume. It’s a space for advertisements in a magazine, but when I’m captioning, I worry about where to place it while looking at development and scene timing. But it was a space full of memories for me, where I was able to writing greetings and acknowledgments I hadn’t really had a chance for when it was turned into a comic.

久しぶりに長めのお話を描けて本当に嬉しかったです。読切形式だといつも途中でもう次は何をと頭がいっぱいになりますが、こうしてすぐに締めずに展開できるととてもワ��ワクして漫画家になりたかった頃の気持ちが思い出されました。短く切ってしまいたくない話も沢山あるのでまた機会がありましたら読んでいただけると幸せです。ずっとやりたかった依代の里のお話でしたが今の心境になれた夏目だから帰れた話でもあるのかなと感じました。同業だからの連帯認識とその時の考えで会う度に変化していく名取と的場の微妙な立場も描き取っていきたいです。絆ある友人を人事ている夏目、祓い屋である事でも力になれるはずだと信じている名取、おおくを知り見る事は出来ている故動く事が出来ない事もある的場、きっと力になれるはずなのに同行できない田沼、秘密を見守る猫達、ニャンコ先生、描きたいものがいっぱい描けて楽しかったです。そしてもっとこの話で描きたかったなと思っている事もあるのでまたしっかり練って描いていきたいです。
Chapters 103, 104: Village of the Sleeping Vessel
I was really happy to write a long story for the first time in a while. With standalone stories, my head is always already full of what I’m going to do next when I’m halfway through, but this time I was really excited to be able to develop the story without immediately bringing it to a close. It reminded me of how I felt when I first became a mangaka. There are many other stories I don’t want to cut short, so if I get another chance I’d be happy for them to be read. I’ve wanted to do the Yorishiro Village story for a long time, but with Natsume’s current state of mind I feel like there are probably other stories I could return to. I also want to keep drawing Natori and Matoba’s delicate position, which changes whenever they meet because of the sense of solidarity as colleagues, and because of their thoughts in the moment. I was happy to be able to draw so many of the things I wanted to draw: Natsume who believes in his close friend[s], Natori who believes he should be able to support [Natsume] even though he’s an exorcist, Matoba who sometimes can’t act because he is able to know and see so much, Tanuma who surely should have been able to support [Natsume] but couldn’t accompany him, the cats who keep a secret, and Nyanko-sensei. Also, sometimes I think about how I wanted to draw this story even more, so I want to keep polishing it up properly.*

里から帰った夏目は田沼に色々報告せねばならないのではと思い出来たお話です。ニャンコ先生について、妖絡みで仕事をしている人達について。けれど隣あってみると話すというより一緒に何かやっているうちに気持ちの整理がついていき、夏目なりに田沼への報告が出来たのではと感じました。アニメグッズで担いだ風呂敷に穴が空いていてみかんを落としているニャンコ先生を描いてくださった絵���あるのですが、ああいう可愛いお話も描きたいと思っていたのを思い出しました。
Chapter 105 Cookies and The Forest Entrance
This is a story that developed out of the thought that Natsume had a lot he needed to tell Tanuma when he came back from the village. About Nyanko-Sensei, about people who work with yokai issues. But when I saw them side by side, I felt that rather than talking, Natsume would sort out his feelings while they did something together, and that he would be able to report to Tanuma in his own way. There’s an anime merchandise illustration of Nyanko-Sensei dropping satsumas from a hole in the furoshiki slung over his shoulders,* and it reminded me that I wanted to draw a story with something cute like that.

依島さんは20巻目の「とおかんや」といお話で夏目と先生と名取が会いに行った元祓い屋です。24+32ページでは入らないかなとも思ったのですが、ずっと描きたかった話で、依代の里をやった今描いておきたいと入れさせていただきました。依島さんを描く時は時代を少し離れて描けるような気がして楽しいです。夏目と対等の妖力を持つ相手との行動も描けて新鮮でした。そんな力ある先輩が事情があるにしろ辞めて引き篭もっている現状は後輩達には少し複雑なのではと思っています。賑やかな娘達、広いお屋敷、キラキラしていた空間に透けてくる侘しさのようなものに気付いてしまう瞬間の様なものも描いていけたらと思います。
Chapter 106-107 Visiting a Late Friend
Yorishima-san is a former exorcist who Natsume, Sensei, and Natori met in Volume 20, “Ten Days.” I was worried that it wouldn’t fit into 24+32 pages, but I’ve been wanting to draw this story for a long time, and now that the Yorishiro Village arc is done, I got to fit it in. When Yorishima-san appears, I feel like I get to draw something a little out of time, which is fun. It’s also refreshing to be able to draw Natsume doing something with someone who holds the same level of spiritual power. I wonder if it’s not a little complicated for the juniors when that kind of powerful senior goes into seclusion without regard for circumstances. I got caught up with the cheerful daughters, spacious mansion, and sense of refinement that sparkles through the space, and the time spent drawing seemed to pass in a flash. I wish I could have kept going.

Let’s talk about the Shunshunrikka Orihime’s power for a sec... (going over the 6 individual spirits makes this too long, so I’ve excised that bit and put it into its own post for later...)

A 'Shield' will be placed between YOU and the enemy given to YOU to 'Reject' the 'Attack' that you are given.
This is just Orihime’s basic defensive combat shield.  All Orihime’s shields actually function on the same basic power, but in different directions.  This one rejects what is “Outside,” preventing it from coming “Inside.”  The strength of the shield is contingent on Orihime’s willpower, and implicitly on her understanding of her own powers and the target.  We learn a little later, in relation to a different shield power, that her powers “Reject” the abstract concept of specific events, (we’ll into that in a bit...) but this form of her shield is the one most similar to Hacchi’s Visored barrier, but where as Orihime with her primitive grasp of her own powers has her trying to physically block attacks, Hacchi’s barrier works by rejecting intentions.

This is Orihime’s basic “healing” ability, and it rejects events that have taken place “Inside” the shield.  As is specified later by Aizen, she doesn’t actually “heal” injuries, she undoes the event in which the damage was inflicted.  Her powers are first really elaborated on in the Arrancar arc when Aizen expounds on her powers because of his own interest in their usefulness

There is a very deliberate focus on the talk of a “god” here, in that Orihime’s ability to not just “heal” wounds, but to undo whole stages of reality, albeit in localized spaces; and with Luppi and Hacchi both remark that a human having these powers is impossible.  This, in context of Aizen’s talk of there being no god in heaven but him, later developments in the arc in which both Chad and Orihime’s powers are clarified to be similar to Arrancar and Visored, and that their powers at this point are still supposedly derived from Ichigo (not yet retconned to being a result of the Hougyoku) all give the strongest suggestion that Ichigo was already a unique hybrid on his way toward the ascended god-form beyond Shinigami and Hollows that Aizen sought, and that Orihime’s powers, being derived from Ichigo’s are also expressly god-like.
Hacchi also teaches her this when he fixes Tsubaki for her, after he is destroyed by Yammy.  Orihime couldn’t heal him herself because she had been trying to collect the broken pieces of Tsubaki’s body and undo the specific wounds of each part.  Hacchi teaches her that their powers (as his Visored kidou work on the same rejection principle) that she doesn’t need a “thing” to heal, she just needs to know about the “event” in which is was destroyed and reject that.  It’s less explicit when Hacchi says it, but I also want to point out that this also establishes the nature of Hacchi’s powers by association.
This all becomes particularly frustrating when he eventually fights Baraggan and Kubo acts like his powers don’t work against Baraggan’s rapid aging power, despite the fact that we know from all this that Hacchi’s powers, like Orihime’s, supersedes time and space based manipulation by being abstract concept based.  His barriers should sensibly be able to completely reject the event of aging.
This power is actually Orihime’s most (theoretically) useful, and it’s both the one Aizen intends to exploit when he first abducts her, as well as the means by which she intends to make herself useful and reject the Hougyoku from existence... a plot hook that never gets revisited despite being the explicitly stated goal of Orihime’s entire projected character arc.  But despite resolving to save the day herself, in her own unique way, and refusing to be rescued... she does nothing of real note the rest of the arc and sits around waiting to be rescued...
Also I totally forgot to throw this in the first draft, but there’s also the time Ichigo realizes he can’t break out of Orihime’s healing shield during Zaraki’s fight with Nnoitra.  They don’t go any further into that at the time, but logically the implication would be that because of how her event powers work, she’s still actively undoing everything inside the shield, including any attempts to break out.  Theoretically she could actually “heal” an Arrancar, and they’d be unable to escape from inside, and they’d continue to have their “injuries” undone, including their masks breaking, reverting them back into a regular Hollow.

SMASH the enemy, put a shield inside them and “Reject” the “Joining of Material”!  In short, I split the enemy right in two!...
Orihime’s woefully underused attack shield.  The translation can be a little odd sounding in English, but the idea is that her shield rejects “Both sides” as in “Inside” and “Outside” but like the other shields those aren’t the most clear definitions.  For the defensive shield, “Outside” is just whatever is in front of Orihime; for healing, “Inside” is just whatever is under the dome; and in this case the shield works almost like a blade, and rather than a real “Inside” and "Outside” it’s really just “on either side” of the shield. But the description Tsubaki gives here specifies that it rejects the “event” in which the thing being attack is in fact one singular/whole thing, effectively splitting it in two on a conceptual level.
Considering she doesn’t actually use this to beat any enemies after her very first fight against the hollow, Numb Chandelier, there’s not a lot to be said about this.  In her one fight in Soul Society with Ikkanzaka Jiroubou, Tsubaki establishes that her lack of killing intent is what left his shield too weak to effectively attack.

This turned out way longer than I thought it’d be, and there really weren’t even all that many scenes with Orihime’s powers being explained.  But this is it.  This is basically everything of note about how Orihime’s rejection shield powers work.  I might do a different one tracing Orihime’s character development setup for the arc scene by scene before it just got totally ignored

I really hate waking up to see that there was good meta that was circulating during the night and I have so many things I want to say but I have to go to work like a responsible adult in this capitalist hellscape. I’m specifically referencing this, this, this, and this, and I just got home from work and it was balls to the walls fucking crazy today, so excuse me if I seem incoherent and disjointed.
All of this made me think of a few very specific theories I have, which I’ve already mentioned in passing, but now I feel the urge to lay them out all together in one post, which are:
Loki is Goro’s original persona, and Yaldabaoth hand-picked him for a reason
Yaldabaoth, disguised as Igor, served the function of psychopomp cognitive guide to Goro that Morgana serves to Akira, Teddie serves to Souji, and Mitsuru serves to Makoto
Goro used Loki’s berserker power on himself so he could kill Wakaba
Robin Hood is the persona born from Goro’s bond with Akira and represents the justice he wishes he believed in
Goro is not a true wildcard and never was one
Plus some other ones reading today’s meta made me think about
So, without further ado.
Loki as Goro’s original persona aligns most strongly with two things: 1. actual dialogue during his boss fight, and 2. the larger framework of the game Yaldabaoth was playing.
For his boss fight I’m referencing specifically the JP-ENG comparison of that scene. One of the things the anon who did the comparison repeatedly references is that “psychotic breakdowns” is an incredibly erroneous translation of what Call of Chaos actually does:
!! 暴走させる means “to make [something] run wild/rampage/act reckless,” not to drive the psychotic. While it can be used to refer to someone wildly lashing out at others, it can also be used for a runaway car, losing control, acting without regard or just being reckless in a potentially dangerous way. In the Persona series, this term has also been used in reference to losing control of one’s Persona, and to a Shadow going berserk (for those who’ve played Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the JP name for Shadow Frenzy, シャドウ暴走, also uses the term).
Goro’s ability makes people act recklessly without regard for others; it doesn’t make them outright psychotic. (Strangely enough, the first scene at Leblanc in the game translates the incidents related to this ability as “rampage incidents,” which is closer to what it should be, yet they consistently screw it up in later scenes.)
And the original dialogue follows up on that:
Makoto (JP): あんな、人を操ったり狂わせたりする力を、自分自身の心から生み出してたなんて…(“To think that the power to manipulate and drive mad others was born from his own heart…”)
And more subtly:
Futaba (JP): なのに人生ソロプレイだったから、目覚めた力は、自前の『嘘』と『恨み』の、たった2個だけ… (“Even so, ‘cause you went through life in single player, the powers you awakened were just your "lies” and “resentment”…“)
I feel like the original text upholds this argument, especially considering Goro consistently refers to Loki as his “true” power, and he is way OP with Loki in a way he’s not with Robin Hood–almost as if he’s had more time to level-grind with Loki than he has with Robin.
As for Yaldabaoth, I think the context of what Yaldabaoth actually wants is very clear: Yaldabaoth wanted Goro to win. He created a blatantly unfair “game” modeled after the normal “game” played between Philemon and Nyarlathotep, and the first thing he did was give a persona to one player two years earlier than the other. Yaldabaoth wants to destroy and remake the world, and he would have cherry-picked the angriest kid in the barrel to make that happen. Goro didn’t have some psychopomp cognitive guide in the form of a talking cat to explain the metaverse to him, and I think it stands to reason that Yaldabaoth groomed Goro as much as Shido did: Yaldabaoth was Goro’s psychopomp cognitive guide. Goro’s not-dumb enough to be immediately suspicious when a random app installs itself on his phone; it stands to reason that he only paid it any attention because some half-bald fucker with a nose longer than Goro’s Robin Hood mask planted the idea in his head of what it could be used for. Akira tries to delete the app twice, and it’s only after Ryuji accidentally triggers the Nav that he stops trying to get rid of it.
(I’ve seen the Goro was a subject in Wakaba’s research theories too as an explanation for how he could know so much of the metaverse without Morgana around to catsplain it to him. I’m not a fan of them, mostly because I think subtle writing is a concept Atlus is very much not at all engaged with, and if he really was a research subject that would have been dumped on us with all the subtlety of trying to assassinate someone by dropping roof tiles onto them, and I like my HCs and theories to be as in line as what can be explained most comprehensibly with canon until I decide to throw the entire baby out with the bathwater and say MY PLAYGROUND NOW. It’s a cool theory, it’s just not one that I’m into. The people who play with this theory are smarter and more valid than Atlus will ever be. And who knows, maybe Royal will prove me wrong. I am open to being proven wrong and Krist is already starting to feed me food from Royal that has me second-guessing, but I’m going to wait until the international release in March to have takes on this.)
As for Goro himself–I’ve always, from the first time I played P5 when I thought Goro as interesting enough in concept but wasn’t really ready to be a Goroboy, thought that Goro represented the Justice Arcana in reverse, which is interesting in that this Persona game you can’t reverse confidants’ cards. Goro is reversed Justice in and of himself within the main context of the narrative.
I don’t really jive with the idea that Goro started out with Robin Hood as representative of his ideals before he was manipulated and twisted by Shido, because it contradicts the context in which he had his awakening and it removes whatever degree of culpability or autonomy Goro did have in what he ultimately became. Goro is full of rage, and Goro acted on that rage. Goro got the slightest taste of power and went from 0 to acting on a desire from revenge in about thirty seconds flat. He definitely didn’t realize he was signing on for murder and Shido definitely groomed him into being his psychopomp hitman, Goro is the one who took the initiative to approach Shido in the first place because Goro wanted to destroy the man who destroyed his life and who did, in some sense, kill his mom. Not that I think it’s disingenuous to say that Goro did originally believe in a justice that was, well, more just, but there’s a vast chasm between the boy who used to pretend to be a hero of justice and a boy who decided what he wanted most was to humiliate his fascist of a father. Goro’s sense of justice was already hugely warped by the time he awakened to his persona. Justice is exposing Shido publicly and holding him accountable; justice for Goro was making Shido’s life a living very personal hell.
Loki’s power isn’t even necessarily to make someone go berserk. Goro actually explains how Loki’s power works at the start of his boss fight, and it’s carried through pretty well in the English translation.
Goro (JP): ちっぽけな存在でも、心の枷が外れると、桁違いの力を得る事がある。 ("Even a tiny being, once you remove the bonds on its heart, can gain unimaginable power.”) Goro (EN) Even the feeblest existence can gain tremendous power once the chains on its heart are broken. !! 枷 has a double meaning of both literal restraints (shackles/chains/etc) and more metaphorical ways to bind someone (such as relations to others, or societal restrictions on what you’re allowed to do). While “chains on its heart” is a valid translation, it fails to maintain that wordplay in English, and given how the power he’s talking about works, it’s almost certainly on purpose.
Loki’s power works by shattering the restraints on a person’s heart that stop them from acting recklessly in ways that hurt other people. I think a case could very much be made that the reason this seems to always result in violence on the part of those of Goro’s targets (and Goro himself) is because when you’re in that state, you stop feeling sympathy or empathy, and the dark impulses you bury deep inside (which everyone has) can reign unchecked.
When I first started to choochoo along the “Goro went berserk to kill Wakaba” train, one of the first things I started to speculate was that he was the first person he used Call of Chaos on. I started to reevaluate that today when I read all of that delicious food and found myself rethinking how Goro would have approached Shido, and I found myself drawn the conclusion that Goro brought Shido two things–the ability to gather secret knowledge and the ability to drive people berserk–but Shido would have wanted proof. And Goro’s an idiot, but he’s not dumb; he would have had that proof ready in advance. Goro would have been causing some psychotic breakdowns on a smaller scale before he approached Shido, just enough to make the news and catch Wakaba’s attention in her research, but not enough to cause widespread chaos on the scale that’s referenced in game, before he stepped foot through Shido’s door.
I find it very hard to believe that Goro didn’t know the basics of Wakaba before he killed her: single mom, no father in the picture, daughter roughly his age. Goro is the type to hoard information because it makes him feel in control, so he’d be given this name from Shido and want to know everything he can uncover about his target first–also he’s the one with the metaverse nav app and he’d need to know as much about her as possible to figure out what her distortion is.
(This is assuming Wakaba had a palace as opposed to residing in Mementos. I have no grounds to base this theory on, but I think she did. I won’t go into it in too much detail, but I HC that Wakaba’s palace was modeled after the Library of Alexandria, and Wakaba’s shadow was Hypatia. I’ll save the thematic whys of that for another post because they’re neither here nor there.)
I have a hard time buying that a teenager would just go from zero to being okay with murder without having some pretty critical hangups in the process, especially a teenager who kind of thinks of himself as a hero who has to get his hands dirty. You can’t really justify murdering an innocent woman who did nothing wrong when you measure her against people like Okumura. Especially when so much of that single mom’s life story should probably logically resonate with you.
(This is another reason I get upset that nothing in canon ever has Goro actively acknowledge his murder of Wakaba, because if it did it would have to grapple the between Goro and Futaba and the fact that Goro did to Futaba was exactly what was done to him, but way more directly. Atlus is not subtle and is also not capable of nuance or depth.)
So the logical line of thought is that Goro used Call of Chaos on himself to break the chains on his own heart (the feelings that would make him sympathize with Wakaba and see his own mother in her) so that he could kill her. I’d also argue that layered on top of of all of this is that Goro didn’t know killing her shadow would kill her, because Shido guarded her research closely and Yaldabaoth wanted a boy who would be willing to smash things. They were both grooming him to be their perfect little murderer.
By the point we meet him in the game Goro is heavily tied up in Shido’s conspiracy and all that that entails. His already jaded sense of justice will by this point have been warped beyond repair–until he meets Akira. Akira is probably the first person Goro has ever bonded with in his entire life, and a wildcard’s power is rooted in the ability to form bonds. Positive bonds specifically, because it’s only through those that their power can grow. I think we can all look at Goro’s life and agree that his relationship with Akira is the only positive one he’s had since he was like…….never years old.
And I specifically think that it’s through his relationship with Akira that Goro starts to reawaken to his true sense of justice. It’s textually canonical that Goro is jealous of the fact that the Phantom Thieves found a way to achieve their goals without collateral damage. I think that bonding with Akira–in a way Goro has literally never bonded with anyone else before–is what caused Goro’s second awakening and his tentative re-embrasure of the belief that justice is about helping, not hurting. Except he’s in two such different places at this point. I’m very on board with the BPD!Goro hc that’s become a thing lately, thanks to Krist and the goroboys discord server, but I’m not going to go into specifics because I’m not BPD. I just think that from what I’ve read of BPD it sounds valid, and if a person who is BPD says they get that mood from him, that’s extra valid
But Goro’s sense of self is clearly very split between Loki and Robin Hood and what they thematically represent. He wants to be a hero, but he still dresses like a tokusatsu villain half the time. He wants to be a hero, but he’s also a murderer. He can’t reconcile these aspects of himself.
Goro isn’t a true wildcard because he lacks the ability of connection. While the wildcard ability is granted by a cosmic entity (Philemon/Igor/Yaldabaoth/etc.), the degree of its manifestation is dependent upon the wildcard’s ability to connect with other people. The case could be made that Adachi and Namatame are wildcards because they’re both selected as game pieces by Izanami, but only Souji manifests the wildcard ability because only he is able to connect with others. The implication to be taken from that is that a cosmic force can grant an individual a persona and the corresponding wildcard ability, but that ability can’t manifest itself unless the individual is capable of wielding it–which Goro is not.
And very much unlike a wildcard, if you take the necessary steps Goro’s two personas do fuse into an ultimate whole. If you complete the development of Goro’s character to the extent the game requires, then Loki and Robin Hood fuse to become Hereward. I have some thoughts about this in relation to the fact that I can’t find any evidence that Hereward is tied to the Robin Hood myth, but all that aside: Goro’s warped sense of justice and his true sense of justice fused together in a way that’s, uh——-
Robin Hood is very bara and Loki is very twink. Hereward looks extremely similar to Robin Hood, but has a dark grey, an almost black, color design. Hereward literally represents Goro embracing that justice is grey, and that it’s okay for Goro to both want to be the hero and to want to see people struggle with the hard questions of how the hurts they’ve inflicted, intentionally or not, have impacted the people affected by them.
Goro was never a true wildcard to begin with. Yaldabaoth chose him because he was isolated. That he found his other half in Akira was dumb luck of the draw.

Akemi's wish (curse) = Shiho's safe future Because the organization has been destroyed Now that Shiho's existence is the proof of the defeat, the curse is already solved and there are only two love left!
This one took me quite a while to parse especially the first part and the postscript. Over all I think I spent three hours on this one. I am still unsure about the line about the wedding. I left spaces where the pages breaks are to help myself.
The author seems to ship Shiho and Akai but you can take it without that ship as well.
As always please correct my translation if there are any errors. I suspect there might be quite a few this time.

“On The Way to a Smile” Official Translations So Far
Since the English  translation of the “On The Way to a Smile” novel is about to come out in a two weeks (October 30th), I decided to make a compilation of how LTD significant quotes have been translated in the official French and German and old English versions. This is a pretty large post so it’s going under a read more...
I’m writing this because I know that when the English version drops, no matter what it says, people will be scattering all over the place to see if a certain word, phrase, or sentence was translated the same in the other official versions. To save myself the stress, I just decided to compile all of the LTD quotes now ahead of time. 
I own the original English version of the novels and the Japanese of the revised OTWTAS series. I do not own the French or German, so I need help. If you can provide information on either, please include the full quote and a picture of the page (to prove to others).
Thanks for any help you can offer! 
Now let’s check out all of the official versions.
***Regarding Cloud’s bedroom***
The Japanese version shows the following: 
JAPANESE: (with my translation in parenthesis) 
「付き合おうか」話したいことがあった。 (“Can I join you” There was something she wanted to talk about.)
「ひとりで飲みたい」(”I want to drink alone”)
クラウドのその答えにティファは自制心をなくして言ってしまった。(Tifa lost control hearing Cloud’s answer and said,)
「だったら部屋で飲んでよ」(”If that’s so, then drink in your room”; literally: “If that’s so, drink in room.”)
There is no possessive pronoun (e.g. “your”, “our”) in Tifa’s reply, but since Tifa is losing control and getting mad that Cloud turned her down, it wouldn’t make sense for Tifa to tell Cloud to go drink in “their” room. So Tifa is telling Cloud to get out of her face and go somewhere she won’t see him, i.e. his separate bedroom (which he pays for). 
That said, the official translations published by Square Enix say the following:
ENGLISH (2005, pg. 67)
“Mind if I join you?” She had things to say. “I wanna drink alone.” Cloud’s response robbed Tifa of her better sense, and the words abruptly came out: “Then drink in YOUR room.”
GERMAN (2011, pg. 76 ):
"Ach ja? Dann geh doch auf dein Zimmer und trink dort weiter!"
= “Oh, really? Then go to YOUR room and continue to drink there!”
FRENCH (2014):
“Alors va boire dans ta chambre” 
= ”So go drink in YOUR room.”
So the original English translation from 2005 says “your room”, the 2011 German translation says “your room”, and the 2014 French translation says “your room.” If the revised edition of the novel doesn’t say “your room”, then it’s the wrong translation, not the other three.
CONCLUSION: We have to wait until the revised version comes out later this month, but as of now, yes, Cloud has his own bedroom and he does not share it with Tifa. Odd thing for two people who have supposedly confessed love and “did it” just a few months prior.
***Regarding Tifa’s “Do you love me” question***
JAPANESE:
「わたしのこと、好き?」(”Do you like me”) ~ pg. 71 - 72
She uses “ 好き “ (suki), which can mean “like” in a romantic sense, but she also uses it when she asks Cloud if he “likes” Marlene ( 「ねえ、クラウド。マリンのこと、好き?」). So, technically, she isn’t really asking Cloud if he “loves” her, she’s asking if he “likes” her and Marlene. It’s worth noting that Tifa puts herself on the same level as Marlene in regards to how Cloud feels towards them. Again... Odd for a woman to be scared to ask a man, who supposedly already confessed love to her, if he even “likes” her.
ENGLISH (2005):
“Do you love me” Cloud opened his eyes. He looked perplexed. “Hey, Cloud. Do you love Marlene”
Yes, it uses “love” but it is unclear on whether or not it’s “platonic” or “romantic.” Just as above, it’s weird Tifa doesn’t have the courage to ask Cloud if he “loves” her when CT fans expect us to believe that they confessed love only a few months before this moment.
GERMAN (pg. 77):
Als sie sich eines Nachts davon uberzeugt hattem dass Cloud schlief, fragte sie leise in den Raum: "Zwischen uns stimmt doch alles, oder?"
Naturlich erhelt sie keine Antwort darauf, sie vernahm nur sein leises Atmen. Ob die Tatsache, dass er immer noch Nacht fur Nacht hier schlief, Beweis genug dafur war, dass sie noch eine Familie waren?
"Magst du mich?" Cloud offnete die Augen und sah Tifa verwundert an.
"Sag, Cloud, magst du Marlene?"
"Ja. Aber manchmal weiB ich nicht recht, wie ich auf sie zugehen soll."
"Obwohl du schon so lange mit ihr zusammenlebst?"
"Das alleine reicht wohl nicht aus."
"Und geht es dir bei mir da genauso?"
Cloud blieb ihr die Antwort schuldig."
This is what @minaspassion told me is said in the German version. She elaborated on the word used for “love” and said: “So Tifa is asking, if he likes (="magst", "moegen") her. She is definitively not asking Cloud if he “loves” (="liebst", "lieben") her.“
She continued to say: “ You can consider "moegen" as a synonymous sometimes used for "lieben" (love), since it is a verb that can be used to tell that you care about someone/something. When you read the German version of the quote in context however, you will not get to the idea that it's about love in the romantic sense. If you wanted to express love in a romantic way, then you will use "lieben" in most cases. Even if you would talk about motherly love, you will say "lieben" very often. In everyday language "moegen" is platonic nature. The real point is that we should look at the lines in the overall picture in order to bring the context into effect. Tifa places herself on the same level with Marlene. She is uncertain if Cloud even LIKES her“ 
Another German fan agreed with Mina’s explanation and said:  “ Yes, [I] agree with it. It rarely is romantic but platonic to say "mag/ moegen/ magst" unless the context indicates something different. I can imagine a young girl/boy asking "magst du mich" to be on the safe side, it's still personal and one step closer, but ambiguous enough to not know if they mean moegen as in lieben. If you just ask, magst du mich and later you see your crush flirting with somebody else, you can't be angry with them and say "You told me you like me" "Yes, I do like you. We are friends. Am I not supposed to like my friends?"
So the German version shows Tifa asking Cloud if he “likes” her, not “love” and the word can even be “platonic.” Why is Tifa afraid to know Cloud’s answer if they already confessed love? Makes no sense! Also, Mina said that this implies that Tifa stood in the doorway as she spoke to Cloud. You can see what she said here.
FRENCH (pg. 75):
Ce soir-la, elle se rendit dans la chambre de Cloud. Apres s'etre assuree qu'il dormait bien, elle lui demanda:
- Il n'y a pas de probleme entre nous? Bien sur, elle n'obtint d'autre reponse que la respiration reguliere du jeun homme. “Il pass ses nuits ici, mais cela suffit-il a faire de nous une famille?”
-Tu m'aimes?” Il s'eveilla, la surprise peinte sur le visage.
- Et Marlene, continua Tifa, tu l'aimes? - Oui. Seulement, parfois, je ne sais pas comment me comporter avec elle. -Pourant, tu la connais depuis longtemps. -Peut-etre que je ne saurai jamais comment faire...
@cloudxaerith elaborated on Tifa’s wording and said: “Yes it’s a very childish way to ask it. So I would say it’s definitely more platonic than a serious question. It’s clearly the kind of thing a young child would ask to his/her crush (or even to their parents). If Tifa would have wanted to ask it in [a] more adult way she would have asked “est-ce que tu m'aimes?” Which literally is “do you love me?” (“Tu m'aimes” is literally “you love me?”) “
Another interesting thing is that it says Tifa went into CLOUD’S bedroom.
CONCLUSION: Tifa uses an ambiguous word for “like” or “love” in all versions. It’s clear that Tifa is wondering if Cloud has feelings for her, but she is too scared to know his answer.
*** Regarding Cloud and Aerith’s relationship status***
Although we must wait until the 30th of October to see the English version of this quote, Cloud and Aerith’s relationship has been defined as:
JAPANESE:
クラウドは女の友人であり、恋人であり——大切なものの象徴であり、守るべき存在だった。
 ( "Cloud was the woman's (Aerith’s) friend, her lover—a symbol of everything precious, and an existence she must protect." )
GERMAN: 
“Cloud war ihr Freund, ihr Geliebter—er war ein Sinnbild fuer alles, was ihr wichtig war und es galt, ihn zu beschuetzen.” 
FRENCH: 
Cloud avait été son ami, et son amant. C'etait un symbole important, et une personne qu'elle se devait de protéger.

CONCLUSION: As of now, Cloud and Aerith have been defined as “lovers” in three different languages. That is an unchanged fact that I pray will stay the same in the English version!
*** Regarding Cloud’s “What I mean is different” line***
ENGLISH (2005)
“This time... I think I’ll be okay.”
Cloud was silent for a long time before he spoke again. “Because I have you.”
“You’ve always had me.”
“I mean from tomorrow on.” Cloud answered with another smile.
JAPANESE (Revised, pg. 56):
「これから始まるんだ。新しい—」クラウドは言葉を探してから「新しい人生」と言った。 「俺は生き残ってやる。そうすることでしか許されないと思うんだ。いろいろ、あったから」 「そう——だね」 「でも、新しい人生のことを考えたのは何度目だろうと思ったら、おかしかった」 「どうして?」 「おれは全部失敗してるからな」 「笑えないよ」 「——次は大丈夫だと思うんだ」クラウドは少しの間考えてから続けた。「今度はティファと一緒だから」 「ずつと一緒だったじゃない」 「少し、意味がちがうんだ」クラウドは再び笑顔で答えた。
GERMAN (page 60-61):
"Diesmal wird aber alles gut."

"Ich meinte das aber ein bisschen anders", erwiderte Cloud und laechelte dabei erneut.

French text provided by @cloudxaerith (post), she said that “The “pas de cette manière” (not in that way) made me more think about the fact they have been together to fight someone but know it’s different. So it’s [literally] different.“ Kura of the Clerith forums also did the English translation for us.
***Regarding Cloud being adopted into the family***
This line is important because it proves that the “family” is not built around romance, but rather friendship. It proves that Tifa still considers Cloud her “friend” rather than “lover.”
JAPANESE (pg. 65 - 66):
夜遅くまで二人の話し声が聞こえていた。 朝早く、バレットは出ていった。その背中にマリンが言った。 「お手紙ちょうだいね!電話もね!」 バレットは義手代わりに機関銃を取り付けた右腕を軽くあげて、振り向かずに歩いていった。戦い以外に生きる道はないという後ろ姿だった。バレットはいったいどんな人生を見つけるのだろう。願わくは戦いから遠ざかること。奪うだけじゃない。与えることができるってことを証明できますように。「ちゃんとここんちの子供になるからね!」マリンのその言葉にクラウドとティファは顔を見合わせた。 「ティファとクラウドのことはまかせて!」 振り返ったバレットは大声で言った。 「しっかりな!」少し声がかすれていた。 「家族で力合わせてがんばんだぞ!」罪の意識に押し潰されずに生きるためには仲間が必要だった。たとえそれが同じ傷を持った者同士、同じ罪を背負った者同士であったとしても。慰め合い、励まし合わなければ生きていけない。なるほど、それは家族と呼んでもいいのかもしれない。家族で力を合わせてがんばればいい。家族という仲間と一緒ならどんなことでも乗り越えていけるはずだ。 「家族、だね」

Toi aussi tu peux en faire partie, Cloud! - Je t'en suis reconnaissant, assura le jeune homme avec le plus grand serieux. Il leva les yeux vers Tifa, qui repondit d'un petit hochement de tete. L'avenir leur reservait sans doute leur part d'epreuves. Cependant, elle decida de cesser de s'angoisser a propos de leur relation.
Thanks to @cloudxaerith for the scan. As you can see, Marlene still adopts Cloud into the family that Barret, Tifa, and Marlene started. Tifa still refers to Cloud as her “friend.”
Once again, we must wait until the 30th of this month to know how this part is translated in English.
***Regarding the Case of Barret quote about “their home”***
JAPANESE ( pg. 82)
 あの日。運命の日から数ヵ月後。バレットはティファとクラウドの家造りを手伝った後、親友ダインの遺児、マリンを二人に託して旅に出た。
( That day. Several months after that fateful day. After Barret helped Tifa and Cloud build their home, he entrusted his best friend Dyne's orphan to them and began his journey. )
FRENCH: 
"Après avoir aidé cloud et tifa à bâtir le nouveau septième ciel"
Translation:  "After helping Cloud and Tifa build the new Seventh Heaven"
I am waiting for the German version. But as you can see, the French version (provided by @cloudxaerith) says he helped them build the new Seventh Heaven, which doesn’t disagree with the original Japanese vague wording at all. 
***Regarding the Case of Barret quote about Cloud “being with” Tifa***
JAPANESE (Pg. 97)
 二人は近況を報告しあった。  「マリンはティファに預けた。なついてたからな」 「そりゃいい。世界中が賛成するぜ。で、クラウドはティファと一緒なのか?」  「おう。ティファは昔みたいに店を開いた。クラウドはそこを手伝ってたんだが、今は自分の商売で忙しいらしい。荷物の配送だとよ」  「クラウドが?商売?」 「ティファがケツ叩くんだろうよ」  「なるほど。結局よ、女なんだよな、強いのはよ」
The two filled each other in on what happened. Barret:  "I left Marlene with Tifa because they're so close."  Cid: "That's good, the whole world would agree on that. So, is Cloud [there] with Tifa?" Barret:  "Yeah, Tifa opened up a new bar, just like before. Cloud was helping out but he's busy with his business now, a delivery service." Cid:  "Cloud... has a business?" Barret:  "Tifa's getting his ass in shape." Cid: "I see. Women are stronger in the end/women are stronger after all." 
GERMAN (page 105):
 "Und Cloud? Ist er auch bei Tifa?" "And Cloud? Is he at Tifa's, too?"
"Ich schätze, Tifa hat ihm Feuer unterm Hintern gemacht!" “I guess Tifa’s got him on his ass!”

Cid - Peut-etre. Eb fin de compte, les plus solides, ce sont bien les femmes.
@cloudxaerith had this to say about this scene: “So "être ensemble" could also mean to be together in a place which is logical considering the fact that every member of avalanche are spread out on the world. So cloud and tifa being together at the same place is totally a particular case in the avalanche crew.” 
Kura of the Clerith forums had this to say: “ sont ensemble definitely doesn't mean romance by itself. It CAN be used to say people are in a relationship and it CAN be used to say where people are physically. It all depends on the context.”
I BELIEVE that is *every* LTD related quote from the novellas, but if I’m forgetting something then please tell me so I can gather the quotes before the 30th.
Other translations to go over...
 The French version says Cloud gives Tifa an “embarrassed smile”, doesn’t say he blushed. I’ll find the German/Japanese equivalent as soon as I can.
  Here’s the French translation of Cloud discussing how his problem will never go away because lost lives cannot be retrieved.  I’ll find the German/Japanese equivalent as soon as I can.

Yamanbagiri Kunihiro Kiwame Letters
Hello! How are you people?, I have send another sword to kiwame. Wanted to do this one since the Chougi event (but  his level was too low, until now! ). And his letters, well I can only say that this one has been a road trip, and than Yamba and I share the trait of baeing unable to write short letters. So, translation under the cut, my comments of the translation and the letters on brackets.
First Letter
主へ To (Lord )Master ……強くなりたいと思った。
...I wanted to become strong. 修行の理由なんてのはそれだけで十分だろう.
That should be a good enough  reason for training. 誰よりも強くなれば、俺は山姥切の写しとしての評価じゃなく、
If I become stronger than everybody else, I will not be evaluated as a copy of Yamanbagiri, (Chougi)  (I won't be acknoledged/rated as a mere copy of yamanbagiri) 俺としての評価で独り立ちできる。
I will be able to stand an evalution on my own.
(Here I think he will be able to see himself gain streght on his own, and so will be able to call  his strenght and his value his and not chougi's because he will gain them on his own. Yambahas a thing where he does beilieve people see him as Chougi copy, so this could be so other people recognize it, as he believes they won't otherwise, (we already do!!), but the good thing is that anyways, he believes this training will be able to change people opinions, (and so he will be able to see his own value himself) …
this is the first letter, why am I already rambling so much?? I may be reading too much into this) だというのに。
Even tough. 人々が話す内容が、俺の記憶と違うのは、どういうことだ?

Second Letter

...Sorry. The last time, I was upset, so I wrote a  very (short) straight to the point letter. 正直なところ、俺もまだ混乱しているんだ。
To be honest, I'm still confused. 俺は、山姥を斬った伝説を持つ刀、山姥切の写しであって、
I am a copy of yamanbagiri, an sword with a leyend of slaying a yamanba(mountain witch).
(had to alter the phrasing a little here, he mentions the leyend before as an introduction. The meaning is clearer this way.) 山姥を斬ったのは俺じゃないと記憶している。
I remember that it wasn't me who slashed the yamanba. だが、俺が会った人々は、俺が山姥を斬ったから、
But, to the people I met,  I slashed the yamamba. そのもとになった長義の刀が山姥切と呼ばれるようになったという。
It is said that for that Nagayoshi ( took me a while, Nagayoshi is another name for Chougi, I think another way or saying Chougi or the forging school, he is referring to him here  ) was renamed (called) Yamanbagiri.
これでは、話が全く逆だ。
In that, the story is totally opposite. 写しの俺が、本科の存在感を食ってしまったようなものだ。
I is like the copy of me (the me that is a copy), has eaten the  original presence/credit/fame of this  event.

どう、受け止めていいかわからない。
Well, I do not how to accept it.
(Ohh!! this is super interesting. So what I think is happening here, is that in the honmaru time/the games timeline people credit this legend to Yamba, even though Chougi was the one who did the killing. Reasons for this could be popularity or reinterpreting, in the Chougi event I think it was implied it was because people paid much more attention to yamanbagiri (and that may or may not be because he is a saniwa swords that protects histry, are we getting hints how that affects the rest of the world?, Yey!, This also explains why Chougi was so furious a bit , I mean I think he mentions that people favour Yamanbagiri, but I did not know to this extent. Haha, I would have been good to do the kiwame training then, right?, but I  coundn't both train a low level sword and pass the infernal dice game, so.  )))
(I am rambling too much again. Both me an Yanba can't write short letters/comments. That people give you this much credit (even too much credit), how will Yamba handle it )
Third Letter

The leyend that I slayed the yamanba, the leyend that the original slashed the yamanba, (yamba says something more akin  to “truer” or “real” than “original”, but I think the meaning doesn't change) そのどちらも存在しているんだ。
Both of them exist. 案外、どちらも山姥を斬ったりなんかしていないのかもな。ははは。
Unexpectedly, neither of us seems to have slayed a yamanba. Hahaha.
(uh-oh. Surprining! Also your refreshing laugh is more surprising! Yes! See, you have nothing to envy Chougi, yes, this feel so satisfactory!) 人間の語る伝説というものは、そのくらい曖昧なものだ。
The leyends that human beings tell, are really vague things. 写しがどうの、山姥斬りの伝説がどうので悩んでいたのが、馬鹿馬鹿しくなった。

歴史 History
 過去の少し気取った呼び方。過去のうち多くの人に影響を及ぼした出来事や人物や環境をまとめたもの。学生の大半にとっては、暗記と同義語。世界中の生命体に存在しているが、それが他人に知られるのは、ごく一部の生命体だけである。しかし、他人に知られたからと言って、当の本人はすでに死んでしまっている。歴史というのは、死んだ瞬間に生まれ落ちる概念である。
 A slightly pretentious term for the past. A summary of events, people, or environments that have influenced many people in the past. For most students, it is synonymous with memorization. It exists in all life forms in the world, but only a few of them are known to others. However, just because it is known to others, the person in question is already dead. History is a concept that comes into being at the moment of death.
 暗記がずっと苦手でした。今でもそうかもしれません。仮に覚えることができたとしても、すぐに忘れてしまいます。例えば、テストが終わったそばから、言葉が抜け落ちてきます。これは、覚えたことになるのでしょうか。
 I was always bad at memorization. Maybe I still am. Even if I could memorize something, I would forget it immediately. For example, words start slipping out of my vocabulary near the end of a test. Does this mean that I have learned it?
 歴史が苦手だった理由は、この暗記に起因しているわけですが、歴史の本質は、暗記ではないことは、当時はわかりませんでした。今にしてみれば、これは当然です。
 The reason I was not good at history was due to this memorization, but I did not know at the time that the essence of history was not memorization. In hindsight, this is not surprising.
 教科書では、単語だけが太字で表現されていました。これがいけなかったと思います。歴史には、流れがあります。それがわかっていませんでした。つまり、人間の行動の足跡が、歴史である、とも言えます。
 In the textbook, only words were represented in bold. I think this was wrong. History has a flow. We did not understand that. In other words, it can be said that the footprints of human actions are history.
 大きな出来事に、特別な名称をつけることがいけなかったのではないかと思います。人間は、特別な名称をつけたがるものです。しかし、それが、本質を失わせる一因でもあるように思います。
 I think it was wrong to give a special name to a major event. People like to give special names to things. However, I think this is one of the reasons for losing the essence of the event.
 ある出来事に対して、その周辺関係まで説明できる人が、一体どれくらいいるでしょうか。体系的に、順序立てて説明できる人が、どれだけいるでしょうか。日本の歴史だけならず、世界中には歴史があります。それらのすべてを体系立てて説明できる人は、どれだけいるでしょうか。しかも、記録に残っているのは、ごく一部の人間やイベントだけなのです。
 How many people can explain an event and its surrounding relationships? How many people can explain it systematically and in order? There are histories not only in Japan but all over the world. How many people can explain them all in a systematic manner? Moreover, only a few people and events have been recorded.
 人間の歴史に限らず、過去の出来事というものは、信憑性が失われます。伝聞した時点で、情報の大半は失われるからです。何が真実であるのかは、当事者にしかわかりません。それを観察した人間、聞いただけの人間には、本当のところはわからないのです。しかし、さもそれが真実であったかのように説明されるのです。
 Past events, not just human history, lose their credibility. This is because most of the information is lost when it is hearsay. Only the people involved know what is true. The person who observes it or hears it cannot really know what is true. But it is explained as if it were true.
 現時点から近い過去であっても、それが本当に起こったことなのか、言い切れるのでしょうか。本当に明確でしょうか。そう考えると、少し怖くなります。
 Even if it is in the near past from the present time, can we be sure that it really happened? Is it really clear? It is a little scary to think so.
 応仁の乱という出来事があったとされています。しかしこの出来事は、10年以上に渡る争いの総称です。そしてこの争いの発端は、家督争いとも言われています。では、一体、どの家の家督争いでしょうか? どうして長期にわたって争いが続いたのでしょうか? 争いが終わった後、どうなったのでしょうか? これらのことがわかって、初めて、歴史という学問に足を少しだけ踏み入れることになるわけです。
 It is believed that there was an event called the Onin Rebellion. This event, however, is the generic name for a conflict that lasted more than a decade. It is also said that the origin of this conflict was a struggle for the governorship of one family over another. So, which family was involved in this struggle? Why did the conflict continue over a long period of time? What happened after the conflict ended? Only when we know these things will we be able to step a little further into the study of history.
 果たして、単語だけ覚えさせて、一体何の意味があるのでしょう? 単に、テストが作りやすいというだけのことではないでしょうか? そのテストは、一体何の目的で行われるのでしょうか?
 What is the point of having students memorize only words? Isn't it just to make it easier to create a test? What is the purpose of the test?

Fun fact: when I first heard Kairiki Bear’s songs back in about... 2013, I didn’t like them at all! I dunno what’s changed, but now I really like them, and often find myself humming them (especially this and Lemming-ming).
This was partly driven by how much I like this song in general, and partly, like my SNOBBISM translation, by the errors I found in the most-watched subtitled version on Youtube.
Also, an important part of the song (what the numbers mean) seems to be left out a lot!
I did get a little bit biased towards representing the rhythm of the Japanese here, that’s why in the chorus there’s some repeated words and the English is split up to the syllables of ‘Jin jin jin’.
I also have a fair amount notes for this song down the bottom!

NOTES
(1) This is an important part of the song! I knew that Kairiki Bear wouldn’t just have random numbers in the song with no meaning, seeing how they like wordplay just as much as Maretu, and the later use of kanji and numbers seals the deal. These numbers have definite meaning! But how did I get that meaning?
The use of both English and Japanese readings creates a natural barrier between the first two numbers and the last two, so I could guess it was ‘Want to’ for ‘1 2′. Judging how later on, ‘3 4′ is given as 惨死, zanshi, ‘a tragic death’, I’m guessing that’s what it’s supposed to be throughout the song. Since the Japanese would be zanshi shitai, ‘I want to tragically die’, ‘want to die’ makes sense, or at least it does to me!
For the first instance of 2 2 3 4, I merely used the given kanji compound from later in the song.
(2) Sonzaikan is a word by itself in Japanese, referring to someone’s ‘presence’ (e.g. ‘his presence filled the room’), but I think it’s use here is actually a suffixed compound, sonzai-kan. This gives it the meaning of ‘a sense of existing’, which, given that most of the song is about feeling empty, fits better.
(3) This line is a mess in Japanese, there could be a lot of different interpretations here, but I think mine works even though I had to fudge it a bit.
(4) Essahoisa is a difficult phrase. It’s used in the carrying of mikoshi, Japanese portable shrines, at festivals, but doesn’t have only one use. It’s equivalent to both ‘heave ho’ and ‘hooray’, and the latter seemed to work better, so that’s what I went with
(5) Yes this is a totally valid way of translating this phrase whilst preserving the meaning. Renketsu means ‘connecting’ in mechanical/electrical sense, as does ‘series’, plus the general idea of a succession of bad things happening together is kept! Also, it’s a nice little reference for people to spot~
(6) I’m not entirely sure if there’s significance to the colour ultramarine in Japanese, and this isn’t the first time I’ve seen it used in a Vocaloid song (Jin’s Gunjou Rain comes to mind). The closest I could get is that it used to be a very valuable paint due to being made of lapis lazuli? I checked irocore, but it doesn’t give any more detail than that. 
(7) This is a pun which conflates the word shiawase for ‘happiness’, used similarly earlier in the song, with the rare, sort of made-up(?) word 死合わせ, shi-awase, which means, according to searching on google, ‘happiness from being with someone till you die’.

Yokai Watch 4 ++ Translation
This will contain major story spoilers for Yo-kai Watch 4, specifically part of its main story and the recent ++ (Pura Pura) update, so proceed with caution.
With that being said, this will be a translation of certain new additions to the lore of Enma's family.

For a bit of context, this translation will cover optional dialogue that can be seen after befriending Shien.
Shien has a chance of being befriended when you beat him during the Busters Mission "日の影に眠り魔王" ("The Demon King Sleeping in the Shadow of the Sun".)
During the scene in which Shien is befriended, it's explained that the reason why he can exist seperately from Enma is that this Shien is actually the "evil heart" of the original Shien, while Enma was born from the "good heart".
After you've befriended Shien, you can find Enma in the new area Hell's Kitchen, located in the Yōmakai (Yo-kai World) of the past.
The dialogue I've translated occurs if you talk to him.

Talking to Enma at Hell's Kitchen:
Enma: あっ 妖怪探偵団じゃないか。 ん? なんでこんなトコにいるのかって? Oh hey, it's the Yōkai Detective Team. Hm? What am I doing here, you ask?
Enma: オレもお前たちがバスターズを始めたっていう 釜ゆで地獄ってのを 見てみたくなってな。 I wanted to look around Hell's Kitchen too, just like you got the Busters to do. (1)
Enma: …ははっ 本当は 礼を言いにきたのさ。 『もうひとつの心』を開放してくれた お前たちに。 ...Haha, I actually came to thank you guys. For freeing the "other heart".
Enma: そしてお前たちには 伝えておきたいんだ。 オレたち 閻魔の一族についてな…。 And there's something I want to tell you. About us, the Enma clan...
Enma: まずは オレと 『紫炎』の真実について話そうか。 ちょっとばかり長くなるが 聞いてもらえるか? First I gotta tell you the truth about me and "Shien". This might be a bit long, but will you listen?
Dialogue Option: 『紫炎』について 話を聞きたい! I want to know about "Shien"!
Enma: 紫炎は… お前たちも知っての通り かつて この時代で敗れ 空亡に取り込まれた。 As you already know... Shien was once defeated in this era, and consumed by Soranaki.
Enma: 実は そのときに… 紫炎の心は『2つ』に分かれたんだ。 And actually, at that moment... Shien's heart was split into two.
Enma: そのひとつ… 紫炎の『良き心』は イツキと融合し 夜叉エンマとなり… 王としての本当の強さを知った。 One of those... Shien's "good heart", fused with Itsuki and became Yasha Enma... now knowing the true strength of a king.
Enma: そう お前たち妖怪探偵団のおかげでな。 その後 オレはこうして 生まれ変わることができた。 Yes, that was thanks to your Yōkai Detective Team. After that, I was reincarnated like this.
Enma: そして オレは閻魔大王の孫として育てられた。 煌めく炎を宿す者… 『煌炎』という名を与えられて。 And I was raised as the Great King Enma's grandson. I was given the name "Kōen"... one who harbours a sparkling flame. (2)
Enma: 一方 もうひとつの… 紫炎の『悪しき心』は 別の生まれ変わりの輪に 取り込まれたんだ。 Meanwhile, the other one... Shien's "evil heart", got taken into a seperate cycle of reincarnation.
Enma: だが 紫炎の存在は 『影歴史』という禁呪で 永らく封じられ その魂も眠りつづけていた。 But Shien's existence was sealed away for a long time, by a hex called "Shadow History", so this soul has been sleeping, too. (3)
Enma: その 眠りし紫炎の魂がよみがえり 地獄をさまよい… こうして お前たちが救ってくれたのさ。 That sleeping soul of Shien was revived, and wandered through hell... And then it was saved by you guys.
Enma: とはいえ… まさか紫炎の『悪しき心』すら 『ともだち』にするなんてな。 Though... I can't believe you actually became "friends" with Shien's "evil heart".
Enma: フッ… さすがは オレやカイラが見込んだ 伝説のウォッチ使いってワケだ。 Heh... That sorta thing is why me and Kaira put our trust in you legendary Watch users.
Translation Notes:
The Busters are known as the Blasters in the English localizations.
The name 煌炎/Kōen is made of the kanji  煌, meaning “sparkling”, and 炎, meaning “flame”. So its meaning is more obvious in Japanese.
For the purpose of this translation, I translated “Shadow History” literally, but since it’s a proper name, one could arguably leave it untranslated, if one so chooses. For the reference, its Japanese name is read as 影歴史/Kagerekishi.

Talking to Enma again:
Enma: 妖怪探偵団のおかげで 紫炎の魂は救われた。 お前たちには 伝えておかなきゃいけないことがある。 Thanks to your Yōkai Detective Team, Shien's soul was saved. There is something I need to tell you.
Enma: 紫炎と オレたち閻魔の一族についての真実…。 長くなるかもしれないが 聞いてもらえるか? The truth about Shien and us, the Enma clan... This could be long, but will you listen anyway?
Dialogue Option: 『影歴史』って いったい何…? What exactly does "Shadow History" mean...?
Enma: 閻魔一族 ミカド族には いくつかの秘術がある。 『影歴史』とは その秘術のひとつだ。 The Enma clan, so, the Mikado Tribe, knows several secret arts. "Shadow History" is one of those.
Enma: 『影歴史』の術は 唱えられた者の存在を 妖怪たちの あらゆる歴史と記憶から消し去る禁呪…。 The art of "Shadow History" is a hex which erases the existence of the one it's used on from all history and memory of the yōkai.
Enma: いわば 歴史の『シャドウサイド』に封じ込めて 「なかったことにする」っていう とんでもない術さ。 I guess you could say that it seals away the "shadowside" of history, and "makes it so it never happened". It's one heck of a technique.
Enma: ミカド族でありながら 大罪を犯した紫炎は… この『影歴史』で 一度存在を消されていたんだ。 While he is of the Mikado Tribe, Shien commited a grave sin... So his existence was once erased by "Shadow History".
Enma: 実は この秘術によって オレやぬらりさえも 紫炎の存在を 完全に忘れちまってたのさ。 Actually, because of that secret art, even me and Nurari had completely forgotten about Shien's existence. (1)
Enma: だが… あの空亡が 歴史を改変しようと企み お前たちがそれを止め… 歴史はさらに変わった。 But... when Soranaki tried to alter history, and was stopped by you guys... history changed again.
Enma: つまり お前たちの活躍で『影歴史』は回避され 紫炎が 歴史から消されることもなくなったんだ。 Basically, thanks to your efforts, the "Shadow History" was avoided, and the fact that Shien got erased from history was also undone.
Enma: こうして 紫炎についての記憶が戻ったあと オレはその『もうひとつの心』を さがしつづけた。 So, after my memories about Shien returned, I kept looking for the "other heart".
Enma: そして… お前たちのおかげで オレたち『閻魔の子』は 再び巡り会うことができた。 And then... thanks to you guys, we "Children of Enma" were able to meet once more.
Enma: またしても お前たちに救われたよ。 …ありがとな。 You saved us again. ...Thanks.
Translation Note:
Nurarihyon, whom Enma calls by the nickname “Nurari”, is simply called Zazel in the English localizations.

Enma: ほら オレも じいちゃんの実の孫じゃないだろ? お前たちと 一部の妖怪のみが知ってる話だけどな。 See, I'm not even really Grandpa's grandson, right? Though only you guys and a few yōkai know about that.
Enma: そして オレが閻魔の後継者とされ 数十年経った頃… オレの他に 閻魔の血を継ぐ子が生まれてな。 And some decades later, during the time when I was the Enma successor, another child who carries the blood of Enma was born.
Enma: だが… オレの弟ともいえる そいつの魂には… 紫炎の『もうひとつの心』が宿っていたんだ。 I suppose you could call him my little brother... But his soul... it harbored Shien's "other heart".
Enma: そいつは 紫炎の『悪しき心』が目覚めぬよう 妖魔の力を封じされ 人間界へと送られた。 To make sure he doesn't awaken Shien's "evil heart", his demonic power was sealed, and he was sent to the human world. (1)
Enma: そして 人間として生きることになったんだ。 『影歴史』で 紫炎の存在は 忘れ去られたけどな…。 And so he ended up living as a human. Though of course, he forgot Shien's existence because of "Shadow History".

Translation Notes:
What I translated as demonic power is called 妖魔の力/yōma no chikara in Japanese. Literally, it means “yōma power”, with “yōma” being a word somewhat synonymous to the word “yōkai”, but is also sometimes translated as “demon” or the like.
This is referring to the Enma Note quests from Yo-kai Watch 3. Also, the word Enma Book here is 閻魔帳/Enmachō, which refers to the book that Enma is depicted with in actual Japanese mythology.
Kēta is know as Nate in the English localizations.
The play on words with Hikage Mao here is more obvious in Japanese. 日/hi can mean “sun”, while 影/kage means “shadow”, and the given name 真生/Mao sounds similar to 魔王/Maō, meaning “demon king”.
The character Hikage Mao is known as Lucas Schiffer in the English localizations.

最近、というかここ数年、ラジオをやるようになった。ラジオといっても、誰かと定期的に話すのを録音して、YouTubeやポッドキャストにあげるという素人ラジオなのだが。

視聴数は毎回100回程度なので、よく聞いている人はだいたい50人くらいいるのかもしれない。まぁ、すでに視聴者数を気にしないようになっている。このラジオは、おそらく多くのリスナーを獲得するためのものではない(できるに越したことはないが)。これはラジオという”産業”とは全く別のものとして存在していて、二人の日々の思ったことやアイデアを話し合う公開ミーティングであり、公開の飲み会であり、他愛もない日常を繋いだだけの“場所”であり、その記録である。ラジオという形を使った「遠く離れた2人による日記の同時筆記」なのかもしれない。
(産業としてのラジオとは、スポンサー収入や芸能人やミュージシャンとかの営業や告知など、いろんなレベルでお金が発生しているしその関連の存在。『山下道ラジオ』が何にも産業として意味がないのもどうなのか?と思うが、仕事や考え方や生き方を考えたり発言することで脳を回し続ける、”無宗教の寺”みたいな存在なのかもしれない。自分のためでもあり、時に誰かの役にもたつかもしれない。アイデアのオープンソース。) 山下陽光氏との他愛もない会話の中から始まったこのライジオの特徴は、毎回、彼の住む福岡と僕の住む愛知(途中から直島へ移住)をメッセンジャーでつないで録音する、というアナログなもので、「離れた場所どうしをつないで面白いことをしたいね」という『新しい骨董(2013年より活動をするグループ)』の試行錯誤の延長上にあった企画/実験であった。ただ、このラジオは2020年3月11日に開始され、当初本人たちは「離れた場所を繋いで話してラジオ作る全然できるし、たのしいー!」と狂ったように毎日毎日盛り上がって収録していたのだが、1ヶ月後、毎日はやりすぎでしょ、と週一になった。ちょうどその頃、新型コロナが中国以外でも爆発的に流行しはじめ、4月16日にロックダウンが起こると、人々は遠隔で様々なことをしなくてはいけない状況になり、ラジオやテレビ、会議や学校までも、遠隔でオンラインで行うのが“普通”になってしまっていった。(ちなみに、「山下道ラジオ」の第一回テーマは「住む場所と移住」でコロナの話題はまだない。僕自身のこのラジオへの当初の期待は、愛知から直島への移住を準備していた時期に、「どこで暮らすか」をより深く掘り下げて考えることだったと記憶する。)世の中では徐々にウィルスが流行する中で、展覧会やイベントの多くが中止になり、「オンラインで世界が繋がる」という趣旨のイベントが多数行われるようになった。離れた場所どうしでイベントや収録を行うのが当たり前になる感覚は、もし人類がこのウィルスに勝利した後も続くだろうと考えると、『山下道ラジオ』は1ヶ月だけ世界より早くその感覚を手にしていたのかもしれない。いやいや、陽光くんは、YouTubeが始まる一年前の2004年に(中古のフェミカセに書かれた名前をたよりに本人を探す動画を撮ったり、色々と)すでにYouTuberのようなことを始めていた人物でもあるし、ネットラジオというのもかなり早い段階から行なっていたので、この出来事も妙に納得できる。彼は”前衛”であり、0から1の壁を突破する人で、1になった瞬間にそれは世間で”当たり前”になるものだから。(『山下道ラジオ』がそこまで新しくはないが。) 僕はというと、2014年から「旅するリサーチラボラトリー」というサウンドアーティストmamoruとのコラボの中で、「旅のフィールドノートの同時筆記」を試行錯誤し、一緒に旅をしながらラジオを収録することを意識的に行なっていたので、その筋力が今ようやく自由に生かされているようにも思っている。

そして
今週、『微妙な放送』という、香港と日本をつなぐラジオ、広東語と日本語で同時に聞けるラジオをはじめた。毎週、直島と香港の日常を毎週繋ぎ、日々の出来事、作品制作や家族の事や色々話す。2年前までかなり頻繁に香港に行っていて、初めは仕事の出会いから、飲み仲間になった3人。香港在住の美術家のヒンさんと通訳のヒコさん。同時通訳ヒコさんは香港と日本、両方がネイティブ。そして、日本のラジオもよく聞くそうで、そんなヒコさんがふたりの美術家を 同時通訳で繋ぎながらMCをする。ヒンさんは素晴らしい美術家であり、四年前に香港の学生を連れて日本を一緒に旅行しながら、毎日ラジオを録音した経験を持つ。いや、3人の関係性や専門性がないとなかなか成立しないし、半分意味の分からない間がある奇妙なラジオ『微妙な放送』。この同時通訳者が二つの国や言語をまたいでつなぐラジオ、これがなかなか新感覚で面白い。(聞いてみないと伝わらないのでリンクをぜひ。)

今後、誰か真似できるもっと面白い人々が、韓国と日本とか、日本と全く知らないアフリカの人々とか、同じようなことを始めたりしたら、面白いだろうなぁ。聴きたいなぁ。と勝手に想像している。 さて、話を最後にまとめると、
なんだか、国家や政権というのは民衆のことを全く考え���いようで私腹を肥やし、他者に対して排他的にどんどん進んでいるように感じる。(いや違うか。実はその国の市民の多数がお金儲け第一で排他的でそういう政権を欲している、という国家はその民度の映し鏡であるとも言えるが。)でも、それって今始まったことでもない。もちろん、反対の声をあげるのは重要だし継続していくべきだけど。香港なんかでは、何万人もの民衆の声を堂々と無視する人たちだ。だからこそ、もしかすると、こういうラジオが離れた人と人や閉ざされた国と国の壁をヒュッと飛び越えて、それぞれの普通の“日常”を繋いで、普通でポジティブに、風穴をいろんなところで開けていくって、結構面白い実験なのではないか。と思っている。 いやいや、そんな大それたことでもないし、日々ストレッチするくらいの気持ちで楽しんでいるだけですが。。
Recently, or rather these past few years, I’ve been doing radio shows. I say radio shows, but they’re just amateur ones where I regularly record myself talking to someone and put it up on YouTube or Podcast.
Of those, ‘Yamashitamichi Radio’ has finally gone over 50 broadcasts. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI14yGCeRYoUejQYyzGPeSqUtU2f-xC2J There are up to a hundred listeners every broadcast, so maybe there are around 50 regular listeners. However, I’ve already stopped being concerned about the number of listeners. This radio show probably isn’t something I made for the purpose of getting popularlity (although that would be nice). It exists as something completely different from the ‘industry’ of radio. It’s a public meeting where two people talk about ideas and things that they think about from day to day. It’s like a public drinking party. It’s a ‘place’ where simply innocent everyday life is joined up. And it’s a record of all of those things. Maybe it’s a ‘simultaneous writing of diaries by two people who are far away from each other’ using the  radio format. ("Radio as an industry" means the radio and the affiliates related to money generation at all sorts of levels, such as sponsor income as well as the business and advertisements of celebrities and musicians. I do wonder if it is really okay that ‘Yamashitamichi Radio’ has nothing to do with it?  but maybe our radio is something like a ‘temple with no religion’ where we continue working our brain by thinking and talking about our job, our thoughts and our life. It’s for ourselves, but it might be useful sometime to someone else too. It’s an open source of ideas.)
A distinctive characteristic of this radio show was taking place as an extension of the trial and error in ‘Atarashii Kotto (‘New Antiques’, a group active since 2013).’ This radio show was started from an innocent conversation with Mr. Akimitsu Yamashita, who living in Fukuoka and me living in Aichi (I moved to Naoshima partway through), and it was a plan/experiment of ‘we want to connect faraway places together and do something fun.’ It is not that technologically advanced, as we record each time via Messenger. When we started this radio show on March 11th, 2020, at the beginning we were super pumped up like, ‘Connect faraway places, talk and make a radio show? That’s easy! It’ll be so much fun!’ and madly recorded every day,  But after one month, we realized every day was a bit much, and it became weekly. Just around that time, COVID-19 began to explode out of China, and when the lockdown happened on April 16th, people had to do various things the long-distance way. Radio shows, televisions and even conferences and school classes being carried out over long distances online ended up becoming ‘normal.’ (In addition, the first theme of ‘Yamashitamichi Radio’ was ‘The Place Where You Live and Moving,’ and the subject of COVID-19 was not yet present. I remember that my own hope for the show at that time was to think more deeply about ‘where to live’ at the timing I was preparing to move from Aichi to Naoshima.) As the virus gradually spread throughout the world, many exhibitions and events were cancelled and lots of events with the theme of ‘the world is connected online’ came to be carried out. When I think about how events and recordings being carried out between faraway places will continue to be totally ordinary even in the post-pandemic society, then maybe ‘Yamashitamichi Radio’ took hold of that sense just one month before the rest of the world. I find this thought understandable, in a strange way. I mean, Akimitsu is someone who was already doing YouTuber-like things in 2004, a year before YouTube existed (he did all sorts of things, like making videos of the search for a person from a name written on a second-hand video game cassette), and he was doing Internet radio from a pretty early stage. After all, he is a ‘vanguard,’ a person who breaks through the wall between 0 and 1. And when it becomes 1, that becomes the ‘normal’ in the rest of the world (although ‘Yamashitamichi Radio’ isn’t that new). As for me, since 2014 I did some trial and error in the ‘simultaneous writing of travel field notes,’ during a collaboration with the sound artist ‘Mamoru’ called ‘The Traveling Research Laboratory,’ and I was consciously recording a radio show while traveling together with ‘mamoru,’ and I think that I’m finally able to freely put that knowhow to good use now. https://www.travelingresearchlaboratory.com/
And this week, I started a new radio show called ‘Bimyo na Hoso, (‘Subtle Broadcast’)’ a radio show connecting Hong Kong and Japan, where you can listen to Cantonese and Japanese at the same time. Every week, we connect the everyday citizens of Naoshima and Hong Kong and talk about all kinds of things, like everyday happenings, creating works and family. There are three of us. I went to Hong Kong quite regularly up until two years ago, and we started by meeting through work, and then became drinking friends. There’s me and the artist Hin-san and the interpreter Hiko-san, who live in Hong Kong. Hiko-san, who does simultaneous interpreting, is native of both Hong Kong and Japan. Hiko-san, who is also a Japanese radio listener, is the MC connecting Hin-san and me, the two artists, through simultaneous interpreting. Hin-san is an amazing artist and has experience of recording a radio show every day while taking Hong Kong students traveling around Japan, four years ago. Yes, ‘Bimyo na Hoso’ is a strange radio show with a half-mysterious intervals, and it’s difficult to make it come together without the relationship and expertise that we three have. A radio show where a simultaneous interpreter crosses over and connects two countries or languages is pretty fresh and interesting (you need to listen to it to get my meaning, so go ahead and click the link). https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2bHrW1IIVv2xYEM9qSO5Qw This radio show, ‘Bimyo na Hoso’ is also a ‘simultaneous writing of diaries through two places far away from each other.’ The three of us – Hin-san, Hiko-san and me – often drank together in Hong Kong, and sometimes as the night goes on, I spoke in Japanese and Hin-san spoke in Hong Kong Cantonese and Hiko-san earnestly connected us (I guess the two of us weren’t showing respect to the professional interpreter by doing this…), and it was because we had that kind of relationship and experience that we could start the show naturally. It would be interesting if, in the future, more interesting people who can imitate us start the same thing, like with South Korea and Japan, or Japan and people in Africa whom one has never met. I’d love to listen to them. Those are just my own imaginings. Now, to sum up everything, somehow, I get the feeling that ‘country’ and ‘political power’ are advancing continually in a way that excludes other people, enriching themselves without thinking about the public at all (no, that’s not it. You can say that, in actuality, a country where many citizens put making money first and exclude others and want a political power like that, reflects its cultural standards). But that’s not something that started now. Of course, raising voices of opposition is important and should be continued. In Hong Kong, the voices of tens of thousands people in the public are being brazenly ignored. That’s why I believe having a radio show like this, which jumps right over the wall between distant people or countries, connects each of their normal ‘everyday lives,’ and make openings in all sorts of places in a natural and positive way, is a pretty interesting experiment. Well, it’s not something so important. I’m just enjoying it with the feeling similar to doing my daily stretches…

The song where I really could sense you were experimenting with trial and error and playing around, is “Social Clock”. Yumao: That was fun. Shinoda: That was fucking fun.Yumao: I was able to put in a gong in for the first time. You used a real gong for that? Yumao: Yep. One as big as ones they use in concert halls. Shinoda: None of us thought he would whip that out. wowaka: It was a pain to bring into the studio (laughing). Shinoda: It sounded like a monster was gonna pop out from one simple rub of the thing. While you were writing the song, did you feel that a gong was needed? wowaka: Yeah (laughing). I thought “A gong would be perfect here!”. I just wanted it to be flashy. If you know it’s red and yet get too scared to voice how red it is, then at that point it’s already bright red. Every bit of imagery in this video was forged from layers of reds, so the act of releasing this video into the world is virtually red in itself. Red is an amass of energy, I think.” 赤から連想しました。今、僕らが生きるこの国で何が赤なのか。原発、マスコミ、既得権益、政治…おもいだしたらきりがありません。赤だとわかりながら、赤だと口にする自由がないのもすでに赤です。この映像に映り込む全��が赤のレイヤーによって構築されていて、この映像を世の中に出すことそのものが、赤なのです。赤はエネルギーの塊なのだと感じています。

There’s only one issue with Yamato’s short scene where he notices Shinji is missing: First, a line is missing entirely (!) from the EN version, and another line is misinterpreted, leading to a somewhat confusing scene where Yamato is seemingly punishing everyone but Shinji.

The metaphysical exists, but is hard to realize.
We see the 2nd State, so we can’t explain reality.

We can never explain objective reality, which is the “second order” that we’re able to see.
[note: According to the linked page above, the first order of reality is sensory perception, and the second order is actually a “conceptual world” consisting of phenomena we *can’t* directly observe, like electromagnetic fields. The third order of reality is beyond that, and reveals the unreality of the second order just as the second order reveals the pitfalls of relying on the first.
