We've never actually seen Dongsik cook, have we?

Canonically it's Joowon who cooks and cleans. He's the one we've seen preparing a meal, and even in the script book he apparently cleaned and organized the entire house at Okcheon lake.

It's amusing to think that by the time they live together, it's Joowon who embodies the house husband persona.

I think, too, that their history and background adds to this: Dongsik's trauma may have left him uncaring about taking care of himself, but he has the social safety net of many people looking out for him. Nam Sangbae was with him even in the RIU so I can imagine Sangbae dragging him out for meals every once in a while, and when Dongsik moved back to Manyang, it's Jaeyi who kept plying him with food.

(We see this canonically too when Jeongje brought over all the meals Jaeyi prepared for Dongsik and Jinmook after Minjeong's death.)

Joowon, however, doesn't have that social safety net. He was sent abroad to live alone as a kid, and as I've mentioned elsewhere, he was forced to fend for himself on his own. That means he must have learned to cook for himself and, because I doubt he would have nannies helping him out abroad, learned to clean for himself too.

And because the man himself has high standards, he had to learn how to cook well to satisfy his own taste.

For Dongsik, I don't think high standards in food would have mattered as much as the company did. And I think the people surrounding him knew that too: that they're there to anchor him, to keep him from spiraling.

For Dongsik, I think meals serve less as a means of feeding himself than it is a communal experience, something for him to hold on too to help keep his demons at bay.

For Joowon, I think it was the opposite: it had been a means of survival, a way to keep himself fed precisely because he was alone with no one to look out for him, so he's the only one who can look out for himself.

When they finally do live together, I think that's what Dongsik has come to be for Joowon too: a means to not be alone in dining anymore.

(Especially when Dongsik invites the whole Manyang gang over to sample Joowon's cooking, much to Joowon's pressure as Jaeyi challenges him to a cook-off.)

And thanks to Joowon, Dongsik now has a house husband who honed his skills well enough to be up to par to a higher standard when it comes to taste.

Gonna disclose my income as a freelance artist because I feel like it might give some perspective. And mostly bc I'm feeling a bit burnout and I want pity points ok? Lol.

Context 2: I live in a big city in Việt Nam and the cost of living is relatively low. A salary of 1000$/month is considered really good for someone living alone with one pet, no family or children, no debt or other liabilities. Entry level jobs usually start at around 200-300$/month.

Let's start in 2021 because that's when it can be considered when I started doing art professionally.

In 2021 and 2022, I was juggling between art school, a part-time online side gig, building social media for my art, and of course try to get commissions. But coms were few and far between, mainly because I didn't have an online present before and I only hang in relatively small fandoms. So all I earn through side gig and art were only some change, in total avarage to about 40$/ month. Some months made up for no income months.

In 2023, things starts to be a bit better as I get more confident in my skill, but coms are still few and far between and months with no income is still common. Side gig was few and far between too and pay less. Overall I'd say it goes up to about 80$/month.

This year 2024, art school is done, I can finally do art full time. But I was severely burnout because all the accumulated stress since waaaaay before catch up with me and i couldn't cope anymore. I have to spend a lot of time resting instead. Fortunately, I received a decent amount of coms each month, and the new patreon surprisingly got a few supporters (I fully realistically expected it to sit at 0 for at least a year). Overall, I have an 8 hours 4 days work week: 4 hours a day on com and managing social media and other stuff that actually makes money; 4 hours a day on my own projects and personal indulgence that doesn't directly make money. As of now, my income is about 180$/month.

It's because my family is middle class and can afford a freeloader like me in their house, receive their pocket money and tuition fee. I'm privileged.

But of course my family isn't rich and if just one catastrophic event happens to us, we'd be in bad shit. I'm constantly in anxiety of money, work, and the future. It doesn't help that I'm late 20s and many people around keep reminding of how I'm not making money yet still leeching off parents. It doesn't help that, for years all i hear about art is it will just lead to failure and no money.

But still, I am thankful of my family for letting me stay here. And all my friends and supporters for giving me money oc lol, but more importantly, believing in me more than I ever do in myself. I read all of your little tags, your keysmash and compliments, and I keep them all dear to my heart, and I went back to them everytime I need motivation. I can't see where my future as an artist will be, but I cling to your support and love as the will to keep going. Thank you all so, so fucking much. I'd have been literally dead in a ditch somewhere without you guys.

Anyway, idk, I've always been adamant about wage transparency (especially in a corporate setting) but I rarely see this in freelance artists. except to flex, to promote the hustle culture, or to sell some courses they made. Most of us don't want/can't subscribe to the grind and have nothing to flex either. All we have is this shit economy. I'd wish we could have been more open about this and many of us wouldn't have to feel so lonely and despair all the time.

in which i'm telling everyone to go watch my country: the new age

so if you've been here or on my twitter at all during these past few weeks, you might have noticed my unhinged yelling about my country: the new age (and woo dohwan's beautiful, talented face). i finished the drama two weeks ago (immediately started rewatching from the beginning), and i honestly still haven't recovered. it flattened me like a pancake and left me just like that.

it's been a while since i got so invested in a piece of media (the last time was 2ha, and then i went on to write nearly 300k of ranwan fic, so this bodes well), and it took me completely by surprise. you know how sometimes you come across a piece of media that, completely out of the blue, rearranges you on the molecular level and you just know you'll never be the same afterwards? this is what this drama did to me, and i'm not exaggerating. i honestly went into it with zero expectations, thinking i was just going to watch it for woo dohwan's beautiful face, but, regrettably, it's just really fucking good all around. it might be my favorite kdrama i've ever watched?

*stefon voice* this drama has everything. do you want olympic level gay yearning? incredible antagonists? interesting plot and themes? fantastic fight choreography? an outrageously talented cast with excellent performances across the board and a host of fascinating supporting characters? a clever fucker with a fan? two protagonists who are absolutely unhinged about each other and love each other so much even as they practice stabbing as a form of foreplay? a searingly hot older woman with the richest voice you've heard? complex (if underutilized) female characters? costumes and styling so pretty it makes you want to chew on your arm? do you like to be made to feel all emotions known to man in a single moment? do you want to stay in a fetal position for two days after watching the last episode? do you want to think of nothing else for the rest of the week/month/year? WELL, THIS DRAMA IS FOR YOU THEN.

it's a historical court intrigue drama set against the backdrop of the fall of the goryeo kingdom and the rise of the joseon dynasty (~14th century), following two friends, seo hwi and nam seonho, who find themselves on the opposing sides of a political conflict. i can't even begin to express how good the central relationship of this drama is. it's a love story, and they fucking know it. the chemistry is sizzling. the knives are exquisite. there are so many layers to this relationship, and the lead actors do a phenomenal job with that. yang sejong gives a wonderfully understated yet extremely emotional performance as hwi, and the transformation hwi goes through is incredible to watch. woo dohwan as seonho is superb - intense, tragic, horribly misguided. the way this man acts makes me want to chew concrete.

and then!!! i usually don't gravitate towards antagonists/villains, but holy fuck, jang hyuk's performance as bangwon is such a tour de force. he is phenomenal, and he brings such nuance and complexity to bangwon that you literally can't tear your eyes away. (he also has a fan.) all three of them are absolute chemistry machines. all three could probably generate chemistry with a brick wall if needed, and this 100% shines through on screen. the strange, intense dynamic they're locked into is beyond delicious. the chemistry between bangwon and hwi is truly beyond. the "in love, divorced but still fucking" energy that seonho and hwi give off is everything. the parallels between seonho and bangwon are delectable. the complex nets of interpersonal dynamics make me want to weep with joy at how wonderfully nuanced they are.

and as if that were not enough, there's a whole cast of truly multidimensional supporting characters! (park chido, my beloved!!! munbok! jeong beom! sungrok! madam seol! hwawol, my baby!!!) honestly, there's not one weak performance across this entire cast - everyone gives it their all. this drama features also the worst father in the history of fiction, and i'm including shi mei's dad and jin guangshan in that. nam jeon is the worst is so, so many different, despicable ways, but his actor sells it so, so well. i loved every minute of absolutely loathing him.

the weakest point of the drama is, in my opinion, the obligatory but ultimately pretty secondary attempt at a romantic plot, which would be much better served by focusing on the other aspects of hwi and huijae's dynamic, because there's a lot of crunchy stuff to dig into, and i love huijae otherwise and wouldn't want to see her cut from the story in the slightest. her conflicting loyalties are so compelling, and that's where i feel like the character shines the most. the romantic plot also falls flat when confronted with whatever the fuck seonho and hwi have going on at any given point in time, but i think the drama knows that, too, and isn't trying to fight it particularly seriously (or at all).

(i also didn't love all the music choices in this, but that i can still live with.)

and, to close this giant wall of yelling, this drama is just so pretty. the cinematography is beautiful, the costumes (which i admit i besmirched a little after the first episode) get progressively more and more stunning as we go on, and i would like to personally thank whoever did seonho's wig/extensions, because that's one of the best examples of hair work i've seen in a while, and also to congratulate the makeup artists on the excellent sculpting job they did on seonho - he gets progressively more snatched the older he gets and this is very good for me, personally.

oh, and if, after all this, you're still wondering what it's like to watch woo dohwan act, then thank you, tumblr user @jekkies, for providing this excellent quote, because it's exactly like that (except there's nothing to steal here because yang sejong is also stellar):

Alles wat ik dacht te weten verdween als sneeuw voor de zon toen tante Sandra me tegen haar boezem drukte en in mijn oor fluisterde, ‘jij bent de mijne vanavond’. Met een hoofd vol tomaat worstelde ik mezelf los uit deze volstrekte waanzin en nam snel en onhandig plaats op een nog vrije stoel langs oom Ari. Het was even stil zoals eigenlijk altijd wanneer ik naast oom Ari ga zitten. Onwennig keken we naar elkaars voeten. Zo beste kerel, hoe gaat het op werk? Ik ben ontslagen. O zei Ari. Er moest natuurlijk gesaneerd worden zei hij na een tijdje. Nee zei ik, ik functioneerde gewoon niet. Oom Ari keek me even snel aan waarna zijn ogen weer naar mijn schoenen vluchtte. Hij zuchtte. En dat Grietje, hoe heette ze ook alweer. Ayu. Oja, Aho, is ze niet mee vandaag? Nee, het is uit. Verdomme zei Ari, pas gebeurt? Ja, gister. Stilte. Toen pakte oom Ari de nog volle fles rode wijn uit de handen van tante Sandra, die net wilde beginnen met het bijschenken van alle gasten, en dronk hem in een keer achter elkaar leeg. Godverdomme Ari, zei Sandra, die was voor iedereen hier bestemt. Met vuur rode lippen en ogen waarin een heel leven verdween keek oom Ari naar Sandra en toen naar mij. Met twee zweterige handen pakte hij mijn beide schouders vast en ademde Sandra’s wijn recht in mijn gezicht terwijl hij zei: Levi, dit deed ik voor jou. Bedankt zei ik. Een halve glimlach trok over oom Ari’s gezicht waarna hij resoluut opstond, struikelde en languit op de tafel met hapjes en drankjes viel.

De beleving van de partner

Hoi allemaal

Net als Joke, Remi en Ida maak ik als partner, echtgenoot en vader momenteel een proces door.

Mijn beleving is niet dezelfde als die van Joke, ik ben immers niet ziek. Wel ben ik de eerste persoon op wie Joke kan en zal steunen, net als ik de eerste persoon zal zijn op wie de kindjes en ons huishouden moet steunen.

Dit alles is veel om dragen maar gelukkig ben ik niet alleen. Deze laatste weken waren heel erg heftig en bijna onwerkelijk maar wat me echt wel bijblijft is de warmte en liefde die ik mocht voelen van: familie, vrienden, collega's (deze toonden me nota bene dat ze hetzelfde zijn als vrienden). Jullie oprechte medeleven geeft me bijzonder veel kracht en moed, dus dankjewel voor de berichtjes, telefoons, kaartjes, gesprekken, knuffels en zoveel meer...

Jullie zagen gisteren het bericht van Joke, wat een dagje hadden we daar! Dit was voor mij een eerste neus op de feiten moment. De onverwachte wendingen en heftige medische toestanden die ons te wachten staan werden me plotsklaps duidelijk. Een anafelactische reactie op de contravloeistof van de CT.

Ik bracht Joke die ochtend binnen voor het plaatsen van de poortcatheter maar eerst zou er nog een routine CT volgen. Ze gingen me opbellen wanneer ik Joke mocht halen.

Plots, veel vroeger dan verwacht rinkelde de telefoon, het UZ. Terwijl ik me haaste om op te nemen begon de gedachtenmolen te draaien. Dit is toch veel te vroeg, wat is er aan de hand? Ik nam op, de standaardvragen begonnen 'bent u de echtgenoot van Joke Snick?, 'Ja?! Is er iets?!', hart aan 100 per uur! 'u spreekt hier met de spoedienst van het UZ Gent...', hart aan 200 per uur en moed in de schoenen, er liep iets mis met de operatie was de eerste gedachte... 'je echtgenote deed een zware allergische reactie op de contravloeistof van de CT... kan je zo vlug mogelijk komen, ze heeft het mentaal heel zwaar nu...'

Bam! Daar is die man met de hamer en deze keer niet op de voor mij zo geliefde fiets... Ik gaf de boodschap door aan de ouders van Joke, die er waren om de kinderen op te vangen. Ook hun hart zag ik een slagje overslaan bij het brengen van de boodschap, ook hun wereld zag ik even stilstaan. Verscheurend om mensen om wie je geeft te zien afzien maar ook ergens een troost om samen deze heftige emoties te delen.

Mijn schoonpapa reed met me mee naar het ziekenhuis, niet alleen zijn deed zoveel deugd op dat moment. We probeerden onze gedachten te verzetten op weg naar de spoeddienst, ondertussen dat knagende gevoel op de achtergrond, 'hoe zal ik Joke daar aantreffen?!'.

Na het aanmelden mochten we naar Joke toe. Ik zag ze daar liggen, lijkbleek, vrij uitgeput en kwetsbaar. Dit sloeg in, waar was de sterke Joke die ik zo goed ken? Mijn eerste emoties braken mijn hart. Dit staat ons dus te wachten, hier zullen we tegen moeten vechten, dit monster moeten we dus verslaan!

Een dikke lange knuffel en wat tranen later vervaagde dit gevoel. Joke kreeg terug kracht, je zag haar veranderen van mentaal kwetsbaar naar terug die sterke, moedige en veerkrachtige vrouw. Ja, dit is dus mijn rol, er zijn, de partner die met een knuffel Joke's en zijn eigen veerkracht weer de hoogte injaagt.

Af en toe zal ik op deze manier eens van me laten horen. Het schrijven doet deugd maar vooral jullie steun en liefde geven me energie die ik op mijn beurt aan Joke kan geven!
