Gossip Girl Playlists: Theatre Kid AU edition! —Blair’s

[Dan's] [Nate's] [Serena's]

I don’t even remember exactly how this started, but it’s @strideofpride’s fault.

The concept began as: if they were in this world, what would be in the GG mains’ MT books? What would be their go-to song? Their 16 bar cut? And then, I got on spotify, and got wayyyy too carried away (typical me), and it sort of morphed into: what are the NJBC’s (plus Daniel’s) senior musical theatre recital programs? And now I have this: a quartet of playlists of repertoire handpicked by me for these fake people, and I am very proud of them.

All selections based on my very particular taste, honed from a childhood in community theater, an adolescence in high school musicals, and a 4 year degree from a majority musical theatre school

And, as in the tradition of Glee and all plays within a play, the rep reflects something profoundly personal about the character, because you know I love a theme.

the meta:

Blair could be nothing but the ingenue right??? She wants to be the lead, the romantic girl, the one who gets to fall in love and gets the happy ending at every curtain. She wants to be the star.

Her voice: born to be the golden age ingenue. I actually have a lot of Thoughts on how modern singers sing this music (snobby bitchy angry thoughts), and I am inclined to think Blair would agree with me. And I didn’t quite know what it was until I was talking with my dad about a production of Fiddler I just saw with the worst “Far From the Home I Love” I ever heard but I digress and I told him: “these women. Sing like they know what an email is.” and that’s the thing. Blair as an MT though, she would bring in that warmth, that roundedness.

The Beauty Is — The Light in the Piazza

Now, most people would go for the title song of this musical, but I think Blair would prefer the technical challenge of the ingenue’s first solo.

Now, there was once this guy, Richard Rodgers, and he was a god of song, and he had this grandson, Adam Guettel, and Adam Guettel is a god damn genius, and has, sadly, written so few masterpieces for us to enjoy. (is it bc he and his muse Kelli O’Hara broke up? Who’s to say). But he gave us this opus, a neoromantic musical callback to his ancestor’s work, about an american woman and her daughter that travel to Florence on vacation, and they get swept up in the city, and ROMANCE.

Clara wanders the Uffizi Gallery, musing about humanity and thinking about the boy who saved her hat from being blown away

Much More — The Fantasticks

It’s the world’s longest running musical ever, so it must be doing something right! It’s an inverse Romeo and Juliet. Two fathers pretend to feud for years, to reverse psychology their children into falling in love. There’s also this spanish bandit? Idk. the fathers go a bit overboard with the plot and some strife happens, but there’s a happy ending!

The sheltered, but ambitious dreamer Luisa sings about living a grand life. She’s a little….out there, in a way that reminds me of baby blair of the early seasons. “Please god please don’t let me be normal!”

No One Else — Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812

Dave Malloy knew that, unlike Les Mis, the only way to get away with a War and Peace: The Musical musical was to zero in on only one section. Galaxy brained. And you just KNOW that Blair Waldorf would be so so so into playing Natasha Rostova. (Pippa Soo leads with the belt in the recording, bc she’s amazing at it, but I see Blair adding her own Kelli O’Hara mix to it).

This has become thee ingenue song of contemporary lit. Natasha Rostova, dreamer and romantic, waits and waits and waits in Moscow for her fiance Andrey to return from the war.

Just You Wait — My Fair Lady

Blair would ever-so-deftly do a Pygmalion/Taming of the Shrew set for her recital. I just know she would.

Eliza Doolittle, fed up with her tutor Henry Higgins’ bullshit, is determined to prove him wrong. She shall be a lady, and show him the fuck UP.

I Hate Men — Kiss Me, Kate

A play within a play! Lilli Vanessi is playing Katherine in a new musical of Taming of the Shrew, which forces her to work with her ex. She is Not Amused.

Show Me — My Fair Lady

Another song where Eliza Doolittle has HAD it. This time with young Freddy, whose more a words than actions guy.

Everybody Loves Louis — Sunday in the Park with George

Sondheim wrote a whole-ass musical based on a painting and it is a goddamn masterpiece! Plus like, the name in the song, it was too perfect to pass up.

Famous (not yet) painter, George Seuraut’s love interest Dot (I know lmao), compares the absentminded George to the attentive baker Louis, and makes her choice.

Getting Married Today — Company

Next in her Sondheim set, from the classic introspective comedy on adulthood and adult relationships. Patter song of all time. Also so very close to blair’s show arc that I HAD to do it.

Amy gets a mad case of cold feet right before walking down the aisle to marry Paul.

Raunchy — 110 in the Shade

From the dream team that gave us the Fantasticks: this bop

Lizzie, a lovely, headstrong spinster, spry of wit and sharp of tongue, day dreams about stepping out of her comfort zone, and being the center of attention.

Sooner or Later — Dick Tracy

Not technically a musical, Sondheim wrote this for the 90s movie Dick Tracy & Madonna. The definitive femme fatale ballad.

Breathless Mahoney—I swear to god that’s the character’s name—is a nightclub singer and mobster girlfriend and should probs be in witness protection. She sings this song instead.

Its Gotta Be Bad to Be Good

A cabaret song by Lenny Bernstein. I like this recording bc it’s the right balance of schmultzy and technical. And it fits how I imagine Blair would sing it. (like the float at the end? So very Blair.)

Circus

Again, not from a show, Drew Gasparini is a fabulous composer, but as of right now, most of his releases are great concepts for shows that haven’t been on a major stage. Maybe if we stopped all this jukebox nonsense but that’s none of my business

Anyways, I love this song. He really did write Victoria Pedretti in You, the Song, before You was even a thing. It’s that right level of batshit insane that Blair inhabits so well, but rarely really shows. I can see the gang convincing her to program this because it plays to a different facet of her personality than all the ingenue stuff. And that facet is: terrifying.

Honey Bun — South Pacific

Blair was born to sing all the R&H girls. Nellie I think is one where her and Serena’s types and strengths overlap, which of course is rich with story opportunity!

The nurses and GIs at this WWII base put on a Follies production of their own for some holiday cheer. Nellie closes out the show with this number. Idk if they meant for it to come off so gay, but I aint mad about it.

People Will Say We’re in Love (duet w/ Dan) — Oklahoma!

This was a late addition, but when I thought of it I couldn’t NOT. It’s about the Plausible Deniability™

In a small cowtown (where a certain blogger went to preschool winkwonk) Laurey and Curly insist that they do not like each other! Nope!

What Do You Call A Man Like That? — The Bridges of Madison County

Mmmm okay so, this is one of my favorite musicals ever, and it may just have to do with the time in my life that I got into it, but I think it is truly underrated and beautiful and really the only JRB that’s worth the hype of his name (she says even though there is a L5Y playlist on Spotify that she made herself). It’s based off the novel and the film (starring Meryl Streep!) and it combines the lady country heartland style of middle america with big sweeping italian romanticism, giving us this golden age in the 21st century sound and we didn’t appreciate it enough!!!!

(maybe I only like it because Kelli O’Hara sings it and Steven Pasquale is a DILF, idc. I’m right.)

Francesca, an Italian war wife who moved to Iowa after marrying an american GI, is now a housewife with two teenage kids. Her husband and kids go away for a farmer’s convention (county fair), and while they’re away, she runs into and falls for Robert, a Nat Geo photographer who, again, is a hunk. She sings this song after their first meeting and trip to the famous covered bridge. “He’s so sincere, what the fuck is up with that?” daircore

The Gentleman Is a Dope — Allegro

Daircore

Kind of an oddball complicated flop for R&H, but it brought us this song, so it’s a winner. Emily, Dr. Joseph Taylor Jr.’s colleague, thinks he’s an idiot [affectionate].

If You Want Me — Once

A departure from the old world mt that’s dominated this playlist, but I think, in a world of Blair, consummate theater kid, who absolutely stuck with piano because it suited her ambitious end to stardom, would be really good at this role. Is it because I think Meester and Milioti have similar voices and vibes? Maybe. But the contemporary music in this isn’t like 21st century MT. it’s folk and indie, and I think Blair could inhabit that very well. And she’s got the range for this vocalizing

Brought together by music, a Girl in Dublin plays another song written by some Guy, hinting that she’s begun to fall for him. even though she’s married

The Hill — Once

All of the above. And just think about her sitting at the piano and singing this, like —

It’s The Number, the italicized “oh” number.

The Man that Got Away — A Star is Born (1954)

The second film in a legendary saga. Really a vehicle for Judy to make us FEEL things. Like with this number. You may recognize it from the other GG.

La Vie en Rose — as performed by Ute Lemper

You know she would.

What Good Would the Moon Be? — Street Scene

The Weil Foundation owes me money for talking up this show, but honestly, it’s so good. At least, the half-hour chunk I’ve shoehorned into these playlists is.

Rose’s skeazy boss insists that he could make her a star, but she elegantly and eloquently shuts him down with this cavatina

It’s about the pure and simple love, babes!

Angel of Music

Summary: Edward would do anything to hear his angel sing once more.

Warnings: stalking, attempted murder (not in detail, just implied) not proof read, very poor understanding of opera, implied afab reader, reader is also barely in this lol, my first fic so it’s a little rough but i’m ready to learn !

Edward read in the Gotham Times that you had a pollen allergy. Please don’t let hydrangeas have pollen.

He read in the Opera Now that your favorite color was pink. So, he asked for pink ones.

He read in the GothamOpera subreddit that you had studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. That you were a soprano. That Gotham was likely your first stop on your road to the MET.

He read in the Oberlin Alumni Magazine that you would be replacing Lucille Raoul, the current principal performer, following a tragic career ending accident. After months of understudying, mentorship, and participating in company, you were finally a principal performer.

He read on your Instagram that tonight was your first night.

The Gotham Opera House was performing Profokiev’s War and Peace. Edward had prayed that you’d be cast as the graceful ingénue Natasha Rostova. After hearing you sing at the Gotham Opera’s Spring Showcase, he was permanently enchanted by your spell. You sang Ave Maria. That same night, he began his plans for change in Gotham. Your voice was his epiphany.

He’s been following you ever since.

But no. To his dismay, Lucille Raoul was cast as Natasha. But to Lucille’s demise, Edward always had a plan.

He read in the Gotham Times that Lucille’s throat had been slit due to an armed robbery. She wasn’t dead or anything, but her career surely was. Just shy of a week before her first performance of the season as Natasha Rostova. Tragic.

Edward was jittery in his seat, the cloth fibers prodded into his back as he bounced around. This is the night he’s been waiting for forever. He needed to hear you again, your voice was better than any narcotic out there. He owed his entire world to you.

The curtains began to rise. It was excruciating how tedious the process was. He wish he could jump up the stage and unwind them himself. All so he could hear your voice faster. See your beauty in all his glory.

Then, there you were. His frantic breathing had ceased. Heaven had opened up and revealed to him his angel of music.

You stood on a platform in front of a black backdrop littered with flickering stars. Your collarbone created a stark contrast with the baby pink regency wear they had you dressed in The fake moonlight they created lit you up as you stood against it. It was almost ironic that you began to sing about the beauties of a garden brightened by the moon, because Edward couldn’t take his eyes off you to see it.

Your angelic voice fluttered until to his ears; every note wrapping a reassuring hug around his brain, making his throat clinch with unimaginable melancholy. Months of agonizing yearning have come to a halt. He could see you, and hear you, and feel the vibrations that your sound created in his soul.

Then, almost too quick for Edward to notice, your eyes briefly faltered from your cast mate right to him in the front row.

His cheeks burnt at the contact, but his heart was riveting. He had yet another epiphany: Eros had come down and cast a spell on you in that sliver of a moment to bestow your eyes upon him. You sang about love and looked directly to him. You were practically calling for him. Begging for him.

Edward had come to realize in that moment that you two were made for each other. You were his moonlight, he was your garden. A match made by the gods themselves.

The first scene was complete and met with a standing ovation. Edward was the first to stand up and last to sit down. He would stand and clap for you for eternity if it was necessary. You were the epitome of love and talent blessed by the muses. It was almost impossible for him to fathom that you were real.

Edward made sure he clapped louder than anyone in that crowd for the rest of the night. That rush of dopamine your glance gave him was invigorating. Maybe if he was loud enough, you would look over again.

At the end of the performance, he threw the hydrangeas on stage along with a riddle he had picked up during one of his nightly escapades while everyone was throwing their flowers during the bows.

Saturday morning, Edward read in the Gotham Times a review of the performance. On the cover you sat in your dressing room teary eyed with a bouquet of hydrangeas in one hand and a ripped opened greeting card in the other.

carina was born to a young single mother in phoenix , az

her father high tailed it out of the picture once he found out carina was on the way

carina’s mother had big dreams of becoming a hollywood actress , wanting to

carina’s mother was the one that pushed her daughter into acting , signing her up for local commercials + the likes until she gained some traction as a popular baby/toddler in commercials

after a few years of continuing on with commercials carina finally took a break when it was interfering with school , much to her mother’s dismay

but still carina had the acting bug + wanted to do community theater in her free time

when she wasn’t preparing for play , she’d make one up herself + act it out for her mother if she’d let her , if not she’d just rehearse by herself until she memorized all the lines she wrote

this continued into middle school , where she became “ that girl ” the theater girl

she didn’t mind the label , in fact she took advantage of it + became THE theater girl of her school

the english teacher that was also the theater teacher praised her for her work + they grew to have a very close relationship

he was a father figure that she never had

until he wasn’t

mr. guzman saw how alone carina was + while for a time he was an authority figure that helped her , he soon became so much more

it started with a ride home after theater practice , the young tween had called her mother to no avail , but she hadn’t picked up + home was a two mile walk . doable , but mr. guzman saw she was in need + offered her a ride

in the car it was really the first time that carina had been alone with mr. guzman in an enclosed space , if they were alone it was usually on the stage

the drive was pleasant , they made small talk + he asked her how eighth grade was going , she was in seventh when she had him as her teacher

when they finally pulled into her driveway she thanked him + started to get out but his hand grabbed a little above her knee + soon it was moving its way up her thigh

only 13 + dubbed as “ the theater girl ” by her peers she never had any romantic or sexual experience , so she froze unsure of what to do or say

that first night it ended with a soft pat on the thigh before she was able to run out the door

but soon the rides were a regular occurrence + his hand didn’t stop at her thigh

it was the first time that she had ever told anyone what had happened to her + though mrs. reyes pushed , carina didn’t report or tell anyone else

but with mrs. reyes by her side her senior year she got back into theater . falling back in love with the thing that held a lot of emotions for her

after graduation carina was all set to attend nyu with a double major in performing arts as well as film + media production

while she was working as a barista she overheard director talking about auditions for an off broadway play + this grabbed carina’s attention

she quickly introduced herself + snagged an audition , she landed a feature role

this was the beginning of her broadway career at the mere age of 17 , something she had always dreamed of

her role in the off broadway play took her into the middle of october + in september she was already auditioning for roles in a broadway play while she attended nyu

she soon gained traction , directors were discussing her performances , even minor roles , on broadway

carina still continued to take classes at nyu but her focus had shifted from getting a degree to landing a leading role on broadway

when she was nineteen her dreams came true , she got the lead role as eliza in hamilton

from that role she sky rocketed to fame , she performed for the president , beyonce , oprah , kristin chenoweth , meryl streep + many more

carina was barely able to handle how fast her fame came , she still thought of herself as the small town girl from a working class home with a young single mom

because of how much attention hamilton was receiving , carina had to take a step back from school

she took a leave of absence , vowing that she would be back + while she’s taken some classes here + there she still hasn’t gone back fully due to her continued success on broadway

from 2016 - 2017 she was cast as sonya rostova in natasha , pierre + the great comet of 1812

in 2018 carina became regina george in mean girls

and in 2019 she claimed the role of eurydice in hadestown

new york , specifically the upper west side , has become carina’s home

RULES

Rules aren’t always fun, but they are sometimes necessary to keep things running smoothly. I would love to write with you, but I’d like to set up a few rules before jumping into things.

First thing’s first. You can call me Dennis or Orpheus. I am currently seventeen years old, making me a minor. I use he/him pronouns.

GENERAL RULES

I will not roleplay smut with anyone.

I request that people ask me before diving into the following topics: Suicide, Self-Harm, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Trauma, and Sexual Assault. These topics can sometimes be triggering for me, so I would like discussion before bringing it up out of nowhere so that I have time to prepare for it. I also request that these topics are tagged.

If you need anything tagged as a trigger, just let me know and I will get to doing that as soon as possible.

The actions and thoughts of my muses do not reflect my own personal thoughts or actions.

Please no godmodding. For the unaware, godmodding is when one person controls another person’s character. Please do not do this.

I am very new to the tumblr rp community, though I have been roleplaying on other platforms for years. If I make a mistake, please let me know so that I can fix it! I’d rather be told than to make the same mistakes over and over again.

Don’t be afraid to message me! I promise that I don’t bite.

The rules will update along with new muses and as new rules come to mind.

HADESTOWN RULES

I will write for Persephone, Orpheus, or Hades from the show, as well as other mythological characters such as Zagreus, Melinoe, Makaria, Linus, Calais, Apollo, Dionysus, Eros, or others! Just ask what mythological characters I'd be willing to write for if you have one in mind that isn't listed.

My characters are based on the characters of Hadestown, but I do take inspiration from the myths at times.

I am a Hellenic polytheist, meaning that my religion actually worships the ancient Greek gods. While you can portray the characters as awful, immoral, corrupt, or overall bad people, please do not speak badly about the actual gods they are inspired by.

I play Persephone as someone struggling with alcoholism. I do not see alcoholism as something to be taken lightly, even if Persephone sometimes jokes about it and acts like she doesn’t have a problem. Alcoholism is a serious issue and I want it to be known that I take it incredibly seriously.

I will not write Persephone and Hades’ relationship as abusive in any way. Dysfunctional? Yes. Struggling? Yes. Sometimes a bit toxic? Yes. But not abusive. I think the entire point is that they’re both a little at fault for the state of their marriage.

I always portray Orpheus as bisexual, as he had both male and female lovers in his myths.

I will write for almost any ship with any of my characters, but I do look for chemistry. Please do not try to force a ship onto me.

GREAT COMET RULES

I will play Fedya Dolokhov, Andrei Bolkonsky, Natasha Rostova, Hélène Kuragina, Pierre Bezukhov, and Anatole Kuragin from the show as well as Ippolit Kuragin and Nikolai Rostov from War and Peace.

I’m currently reading War and Peace and I’m a huge fan of the BBC 2016 miniseries, so I do borrow some characterization and background from those iterations of the characters, but characterization is based primarily on the musical.

I always portray Fedya Dolokhov as bisexual.

I always portray Natasha Rostova as bisexual and polyamorous.

I always portray Hélène Kuragina as pansexual and polyamorous.

I always play Anatole as pansexual and polyamorous.

I portray many of these characters as very sex positive and open about their sexuality, mainly Hélène, Anatole, and Dolokhov.

Many of these characters canonically have affairs and may not be 100% loyal lovers, mainly Hélène, Anatole, and Dolokhov.

As it concerns the implied incestuous relationship between Hélène and Anatole, I leave it up to you to decide. I am willing to play them as either completely platonic, romantic, or sexual partners, as I believe there is a lot of room for interpretation in the original book as well as in Great Comet. I do not support or condone real world incest and to be honest, this is literally the only relationship that I will ever consider writing as incestuous.

I will write for almost any ship with any of my characters, but I do look for chemistry. Please do not try to force any ship onto me.

No really tho the first time I heard that I was running on the treadmill and all of my surpressed weird girl energy from when I was 10 and didn’t want to get bullied JUMPED out and I screamed. I also turned up my speed very high.

I know it’s not a specific moment but every time it comes on I feel instantly at peace.

3. Taako and Kravitz’s pottery class at the ole Chug and Squeeze

Okay first of all Justin said “Chug and Squeeze” and I nearly pissed myself but like. That. Taako making a vase bc he could give a shit what they want him to make bc HE WILL NOT CHAIN HIS MUSE. The spell charging out of the umbrastaff (MY LOVELY GAL). These two fucking idiots falling in love with each other after like 20 minutes of knowing each other and all of us being like FUCK YEAH THEYRE IN LOVE

2. Barry and Lup’s duet

Their love. The way it builds over a half century. How in tune with each other they are, how much they understand each other and trust each other and challenge each other. And how they stay so PASSIONATELY in love after about fifty years. They are what I hope for some day.

1. Magnus and the Chalice/ Magnus’ Death

Magnus sees Julia after her death twice. The first time, with the chalice, is gut wrenching. This person that our sweet goofy and loveable Magnus loved with more of himself than should have been possible stands before him, just out of reach, and the opportunity to save her presents itself to him. And he doesn’t take it. Because even though his life has been hard without her, she wouldn’t want him to bring her back. And that’s why his ending is so beautiful. Major character deaths are often used to motivate a living character, to take something dear from them, or to cheaply tie up things because a writer doesn’t want to take the time to give the proper ending (ahem VMARS). But Magnus’ death is filled with love and happiness from a long and full life that he never expected to live out. There was a period of time where a lot of his risky behaviors could be called suicidal, and the fact that he not only lives but lives happily is so good. And he passes happily, too. And he’s taken to the love of his life, she’s the first person he sees. And I was crying throughout the whole scene, but as soon as Reeder’s waltz for “Julia” began to play, I was inconsolable. I cried about it on and off for days. I had never had the pleasure of such a beautiful ending for anyone in anything I had ever read, seen, or heard before.

NOTE: in all seriousness the balance arc is one of the most beautiful, gut wrenching, cathartic, and satisfying pieces I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. Remembering my first listen through feels like a fond memory with an old friend. Those boys don’t know what they did for me, but Balance helped me when I was in a really bad spot in my life, worse than right now. Maybe Balance is what I could use again. I don’t know.

1. Ned’s secret

The fact that his secret that he kept from Aubrey destroyed him and redeemed him. That’s such a testament to how Clint played Ned’s character. It’s such a nuanced situation. Ned wants Aubrey’s trust so badly. He realizes he has it. And then he realizes how quickly he’s losing it because it’s all build on the faulty foundation of a massive secret about what happened to Aubrey’s mother. And that when Aubrey tells him to leave, he only stays a little longer to save everyone else. And he has his moment of redemption in the heroism of his biggest sacrifice. And he sees the stars...and they’re beautiful. And he’s at peace in some way.

That’s why his death felt meaningful.

If I could have a dream job, I’m sure it sounds silly and cliche but I’ve just so badly, and for so long wanted to be a musical theatre actress. But I don’t know that I’m good enough or pretty enough or whatever. I feel very lost re: my career right now.

Catherine Linton (i.e. Catherine Jr.) - Wuthering Heights. Very very On Brand for me. Also a particularly waspish female character, which is less on brand for me, but seems like a good challenge?

JOI - Bladerunner 2049. Sci-fi is probably not very on brand for m e but Joi just seems like a very flexible character to play. I like

Leonard H. McCoy - Star Trek (Specifically AOS). I’m nostalgic but I don’t think I’d actually pick him up. I used to write a ton of Star Trek Fanfic and I miss my Good Angry Doc

Thomas Schofield - Sorcery and Cecelia. He’s a little shit, the Marquis of Schofield, and from such an obscure book I may as well be playing an OC in the end probably, but he was considered for my Original Roster. Anyway, he’s a Regency Marquis who is also a magician, except he’s a dumb and his magical focus item accidentally ended up being a chocolate pot which is....so easy to break. Anyway, he’s rather clever, has got a bit of a pompous peacock thing going on, and is quite a bit less of an asshole than he’d like you to believe.

Ok this isn’t specific but I’m.....like a book and a half through ASOIAF and not making a ton of progress bc I....have no time lmao but I’m getting the Terrifying Feeling that by the time I’m done I’m going to have another muse??? Stay tuned???
