so this year I ~challenged myself to post a gifset once a week, because making gifsets is something I enjoy very much and can always improve in but literally cannot do for money or lbr meaningful validation and I am historically bad at doing things that fit those categories!

I ended up posting 54 gifsets in 2023, one a week plus a few extras lol. A few stats behind the cut just for fun!

Most popular overall: "I'm so glad I met you" with 1,738 as of this morning. Objectively correct. The nicest-looking gifs I maybe made all year and an all-time scene. Made it my pinned post recently.

Least popular overall: A Community set of Jeff making a Dane Cook joke, coming in at a grand total of 39 notes. This was actually a remake of a set I made YEARS ago because I think it's a great joke lmao. A set doomed imo by the youths on my lawn not knowing who Dane Cook is and also tbf Jeff as the only featured study group character.

Honorable mention to the Rangers World Series set I made, but I'm actually floored and delighted that it got 43 notes. There are dozens of us!!

Some one-off fandom set thoughts:

The Dr. Cox set was a mostly-for-me fave. The Always Sunny set happened because I thought the Aaron Paul/Bryan Cranston episode was one of the funniest the show has had in years; that episode was also what finally pushed me into watching Breaking Bad this year, which I mostly really enjoyed lol.

The set I made from the finale of The Bear s2 ended up the sixth most popular set of the year with 1k+ notes and it's probably the set I most notice on my activity page every week. It does look really nice but also, I see you, Syd/Richie fandom, and I hear your siren song. Maybe in 2024...

Jackie's first kiss was a stage kiss when she played Juliet in her high school's production of Romeo & Juliet her junior year. Romeo was one of her best friends, Jared, so it wasn't weird or anything. He'd kissed a few other people before, a couple stage kisses, a couple real kisses. Before doing it in front of people at rehearsal for the first time, they practiced in one of the music practice rooms during their study hall. In hindsight they were very thankful they didn't get caught because "oh we're just practicing the stage kiss" 100% sounds like a lie. They did end up dating by the time the play was over and dated for a couple years. Now, Jackie thinks it's a pretty funny story for a first kiss and she's very thankful it was such a low-stress experience for her and that she got that practice before kissing someone for real.

Sadie

Sadie's first kiss was in eight grade with her then-crush named Brady. They went to a party and ended up playing spin the bottle and it was totally rigged by Sadie's friends. It was an okay kiss. Nothing super special, other than being her first, but it wasn't bad. She doesn't think about it much anymore, but overall it was fairly good as far as first kisses go.

Sydney's first kiss was during his senior year of high school. He'd has a crush on this guy since his junior year and asked him to homecoming their senior year. i will share about my favorite boys jasper and donny bc i write them the most 🤗

ok so first things first.

ok i am a little protective about jasper’s story so i will spare some details but what u need to know right off the bat: his fc is aaron tveit, he’s the oldest of six children, he’s a former child actor, and he is gay.

jasper’s story is the nearest and dearest to my heart bc he has been through hell and back but at the end of the day he is still very tender and he has been learning how to love himself again and open up. he’s like. he’s like cogsworth from beauty and the beast. he’s a bit of a snob sometimes and he really likes order and structure, but he also has a very simple sense of humor and i think he’s endearing. out of all of my ocs i think i poured the most of myself into him and writing him has been really cathartic for me because he’s getting his happy ending that he deserves 🥺

i think i’m happiest thinking about his relationship with neil (written by syd @genuineviolence 🥰) because they came back to each other across time, and so syd and i have written them both in the 2000s at the beginning of their relationship and now in the present, and it’s been a fun exercise in understanding the ways they’ve changed or stayed the same. syd and i say all the time that they literally invented romance and i stand by that. they’re going to grow old together and have a house on the beach and slow dance in the kitchen to old love songs.

and then there’s donny………

donny is like. not really the antithesis of jasper but like they are such opposites i think. donny is a leo from new jersey so like u already know he is a handful. his fc is richard madden (yes syd uses him for neil, do not come for us they are in different universes 😩) and he is an accomplished photographer and currently an annoying podcast host. in an upcoming group i will start eventually he will also be an actor/wrestler but i don’t know when i’ll get that off the ground tbh.

anyway. donny is fun to write bc he has changed so much since his inception and he has really grown! when i first started writing him he was pretty selfish and a floozy, but now he’s a father (read: dilf) and he’s going steady with his boyfriend teddy (who is also written by syd) and i’m really proud of him honestly?? he’s really stepped up to be someone his friends and family can rely on, and he’s got a big heart.

Sydney was almost blowing up with excitement when the strange person texted her that... It's a regular thing now. This was flirting... Right? She just flirted. Online. The only thing that would turn her away from continuing would be the person being a boy.

After a short ride with Dina, she knew that girls are... Her stick. Boys were fine, they were cool and all - but not a real relationship option for Sydney. For example, Stan was the coolest Sydney ever had known. And they were the greatest friends.

When it came to a relationship with Dina... Yeah. The relationship was a short, yet intense ride. And when they both realized, they decided they were better off as friends. The relationship they had now was better than the one before. And also, they had way more weird, funny selfies.

So, that was probably the only thing Sydney wanted from a relationship - for her significant other not to have a weenie. The other thing was to get along with their personalities.

When Stanley asked her, what kind of type she has, her head was empty. Syd wasn't able to say a single word regarding what she loves in girls. She liked something else on each of her small crushes. No-one was perfect, no-one was bad in particular. Every girl was different. And every girl was beautiful.

That was the deal. Every fucking girl was beautiful. Sydney was sometimes overwhelmed when she sat in the cafeteria and suddenly, all the beauty hit her face. Fast and hard, oh, yeah.

"The thing is... Drumrolls... I'm kinda texting with someone." - Syd told to Stan with both her fists shoved into the pockets of her jacket, walking around the small pavement in front of her school. Stan popped his eyes out with surprise in his face, motioning for her to continue. - "That's it. I don't know who they are, I don't know if it's a girl, a boy, or someone else... And I'm interested. The whole secret is out." - She finished while Stanley sat there with her knee over the other one, his chin supported with the back of his palm.

"On the other hand, before the break came, I heard you kinda have something going on?" - Sydney asked suggestively, sitting right next to him. - "I have something going on? Well, come on, tell me. I didn't know until now." - Stan smiled and bumped his shoulder to hers. - "Someone heard the conversation after the big exam. You know... The biology one. You and... What's her name again? Laura?" - Syd tried to guess. Yet when Stan figured what she's talking about, he started to laugh out loud.

"You mean Y/N? That cute girl who sits like two rows behind me? Oh, that's great." - Stanley proceeded to a bigger wave of laughter. He looked almost hysterical while doing it. - "I wish she would be interested. I wish, man." - "But everyone's saying they heard you proposing to her and her saying it back?" - "It was a damn joke. There's... Nothing going on between me and her. Unfortunately." - Stan snickered once more, having a breaking smile on her face.

"You'll have to tell everyone in the school then. Give it a week and you'll be married or worse... Pregnant." - "What's wrong with being pregnant?" - Syd's best friend asked back, cracking at the terror in her face. Yet before she could get into the great terrors in great detail, someone had joined their small group.

And when Sydney realized who it was, her breath hitched. It was Kim. The pansexual girl from her English class. Also known as one of the girls Sydney had a crush on. The one who she sent her number at the concert. Her number. The concert. A sudden realization suddenly flashed over Syd's head. Hoooly fuck. Holy fuck. Holy... Fuck.

Sydney took a long, deep breath and tried to keep herself composed. With all the gay panic she possessed, her gaze fell on Stanley. But Barber didn't pay her any attention.

"Hey, Stan, what's up?" - The incomer smiled at Stanley, performing some kind of a handshake. Sydney was watching every move the girl did, she watched the girl's smile, the posture... Everything. God. She was so hot. - "Pretty good, man, pretty good. How was the break?" - Barber asked back, performing his part of the supersecret handshake.

"We were out of the town, drinking with some friends." - The girl rolled her eyes, making the beanie on the top of her head look presentable. Sydney's grimace fell even deeper into the horror state, further realizing who Kim could be. - "You?" - "I was working in the local bowl alley, making sure everyone had everything they needed." - "You did a bad fucking job." - Kim responded, having Stan's mouth hanging open. - "I sold you at least seven gs just for the damn four-day break. What did you guys do to it, you fed it to the cows?" - Stan wiggled his eyebrows once more, finally picking up his stuff to get ready for the school day starting soon.

Sydney followed a couple of friends closely, still having that gay panic inside of her. Should she come forward? Should she just ask? Should she go for it? No, she shouldn't. No. No, she had to do it. Maybe. No, it was bullshit. But suddenly, she heard herself saying...

"Did you like the clouds on Monday?" - Syd got out of herself suddenly, putting the conversation flow between Stan and Kim on hold. The girl turned at Sydney with a weird emotion in her face. - "What did you say?" - "I asked if... If you... Liked the clouds on Monday. They were pink... And blue... And..."

"I hadn't even notice, to be honest. I must've missed a great fucking view." - Kim answered and took the strap of her backpack to her palm. Just as the panic and revelation came in, the same way if suddenly left her body. So... Kim wasn't the one texting her. If she would be the one, she'd surely know about the sky. Or maybe she was drunk as fuck. That was probably that.

As the school day progressed on, she was still in something similar to a trance. It was kind of a miracle that there existed the slightest chance of Kimberly being the girl texting her. And although her ego almost shot through the roof the Brownsville, there was something telling her... This can't be. It was too good to be true.

For real - she was as wrong as she could be. Kimberly was nowhere near to be the strange person texting her. Why? She forced the number to someone else in the first place, didn't she? And the girl to who she was texting was sitting in the cafeteria with her forehead forced to the desk of the table as she almost gave up on her highschool studies once again. - "I can't do this Kim." - "You can. You're just too much of a dingus to know that." - Your best friend mumbled through her teeth as she played with her mashed potatoes. - "Now. My life is literally over. I shall pass now." - "It's just PE, Y/N, Jesus. Stop whining." - "I can tell teached I have period." - Your eyes widened with excitement. Suddenly, you felt the life passing through you. - "No, you did that last week, dingus." - Kimberly mouthed and looked at you dying on the table again.

At that moment, Brock and Aaron finally joined the table - the boy looked at you laying on the table with real tears in your eyes. Aaron being your best buddy, he already knew what was going on - Brock was a bit scared by the way you looked. At least until Aaron asked the question. - "It's PE day again?" - The quarterback sighed as he watched your sad face. - "You are an athlete, idiot, you wouldn't get what I'm going through." - At that, both Kim and Aaron exchanged a quick glance over the full plates of food.

No matter how hard you tried to riot against it, the PE was still coming. Your mind couldn't make the whole class simply disappear - that would be fucking cool if you could do that, though. As usual, you ran so much that you almost puked out your lungs, your limbs almost fell down from your body and your head was spinning heavily. And Kim did give you the piss for that, naturally. When this torture was over finally, you were allowed to go home. Jesus, did you take this grace with a big smile on your face? You were happy. Genuienly happy. Possibly no-one in the whole class was so much anti-PE as you were.

For the first time in the last few weeks, you didn't mind being at home just to study. This time, you could text with the friend on the other side of the screen. This filled you with excitement - just to know what are they like. Sure, there was this pressure of realization that one day, you'll be very interested in who they actually were. Yet for now, it was as innocent as it gets.

All you texted about was your day at school - further proving that you have the same teachers, you are going to the same school and that you possibly have some classes together. Just when you were about to end the whole conversation, since it got fairly late and it was already late along with you being tired beyond physically possible. Yet at the moment you realized that someone's standing in your garden, blasting their flashlight into your damn window. Slowly, you walked to the window to take a good look at the person. It wasn't Kim or Aaron, at least you thought so, because they would just text to you bring your fat ass outside because they want to talk with you.

After quite a moment, you realized it's Stanley fucking Barber standing in there - and most noticeably, he was barefooted. Quickly, you glanced over the phone screen, typing a quick text before putting on a sweatshirt. - "What the hell are you doing here? And who told you where I live?" - You whisper-shouted after you managed to manouvre through the quiet and dark house. Your parents were already asleep. And since it was eleven in the evening, you should be asleep too. But instead of that, you were walking through your garden to a barefooted fool standing there. - "I wanted to talk to you, apologize and..." - He quickly whipped a joint out of his shirt. - "I brought you something to help you forgiving me." - This didn't make any sense. For what was he apologizing? Sure, the joint caught your eye, but this was a nonsense.

"Let's move to the gazebo in the park. I don't want our garden smelling like we grow weed here." - You stated swiftly and led Stan out of your garden. - "But how do you know where I live? This is fucking creepy, Barber." - It was getting a bit calmer inside of you. Finally, you weren't near your house with a barefoot weed dealer - so your parents couldn't see something they shouldn't see. - "I asked your friend, that tall football boy. I explained what's going on and it seems that he also already knew about what happened." - Stan looked at you with a sweet smile.

"I've heard that I'm dating you, yeah. Everyone heard about this." - There was nothing true about you liking Stanley or you and him dating. But it was just a rumour going between the people, maybe it had some post on your school's social media for what you could know. You knew that this story will be gone in a month or so. After the Christmas holiday, there will be at least one girl who will be proclaimed a whore or worse, she'd be pregnant. This was just a short-timed story. - "It's kinda impossible to miss. But I don't care." - "I also... Don't care." - Stan shrugged his shoulders, looking at you intensely. For a moment, he got so close that you felt the need to move away for a bit. - "Yeah. That's your brand, ain't it? You are the mister of zero fucks. Or so I've heard."

Finally, the gazebo was in front of you - so you both took a position that was comfortable for both of you and then, you watched Stanley lighting up the joint. Your phone buzzed inside your pocket, catching the boy's stare. - "Who's that? A secret lover?" - The boy bit his lower lip as he leaned closer to you, clearly quite meaning the question even through his playful tone. - "I wish. It's probably Kim telling me about another of her crushes." - Quickly, you glanced over the screen and even if you realized that it's the girl you've been texting with, you tried to roll your eyes. Stan gave you the joint and you nodded before taking in a lot of smoke inside your lungs, keeping it in.

"I didn't know anyone would hear that... You know... The biology thing." - Stan started to talk about another thing once more. It was possibly the first time that you've seen the mister of zero fucks giving some form of a fuck. - "I told you Stan. Don't think about it. It's just a fucking rumor." - With this, you put the joint back to Stan's hand. There was a long silence - and when you looked at Stanley, seeing the boy watching you back, you understood what that was about. Your expression changed drastically - your mouth opened just as much as your eyes. Stanley was bringing up something more than a rumor. Maybe expecting to come out as more than a rumor from this gazebo night.

"Stan... No. No. No." - It was almost funny, the way you shook your head at the speed of light. You had about two minutes before the joint kicks on - so this friendzoning had to happen quickly and emotionlessly. - "Don't take this seriously, Stan, you're a good guy... But I'm fresh after break-up and even though it seems that I like you, it's just your view of the situation. It's quite literally inside your head, okay? We're barely friends... So... Let's keep it on barely friends level, yea?" - This rant was so quick that Stan almost didn't catch a single word. And when it was over, he started to laugh out loud; he was laughing like a psycho. - "I was just curious. Now I know and I'll keep it cool, come on, sit down. You're tripping me out, man." - Once again, Stanley gave you back the joint, nodding at you. With a shy smile, you accepted it once again and sit the fuck down so you wouldn't trip Stanley out anymore.

That night, you both got super fucking high and had a great time, because Stanley Barber was such a cool dude. And it was a privilege to have him as your friend.

Watching that moment when they walk in the door of The Mill, and how softly and gently Aaron sets down the baby carrier, all the while chatting away and reassuring Seb that he's not far away (an important part of developing object permanence at this age is letting the child know you are still there even when they can't see you) says so, so much to me. Likewise the kiss to Seb's little head when he has him back in his arms safe from Syd daring to touch him, Aaron holding him close, fixing his clothes, settling him after the scare, fear still running through him, but trying to soothe Seb nevertheless.

The first; talking to Seb while he unpacks and answers the phone call, is a conscious choice, to engage with Seb and reassure him he's not far away. Seb knows Aaron's voice. He knows Aaron looks after him. The second; the head kiss, an unconscious reaction, born of the moment, that nonetheless reassures Seb that he's back in Aaron's arms, (not that stranger's), and equally so affirms to Aaron himself that Seb is safe, that he's okay. That Aaron has him. Much like the moment after Aaron saves Seb from the almost fire at Victoria and Rebecca's, it's Aaron showing Seb, yet again, that he has got him (I've got you), that he's safe with Aaron, and that he'll do anything to protect him. Because he loves him. Aaron loves Seb.

The part where Aaron sits on the stairs after Syd has gone, after he's settled Seb to sleep, while he's waiting for Robert to come home, a clear physical barrier to any threat that might harm Seb in the meantime, all while listening out for him on the baby monitor, which is gripped in Aaron's hand, to reassure himself that Seb is fine, that he's absolutely as safe as Aaron can make him in that moment? That to me, is a parent.

Watching his face in that scene, as he held on to that baby monitor, I was reminded of Aaron's words during the reunion, reassuring Robert that he wouldn't (couldn't) ever resent Seb, even after everything that had happened, even after all he once said he felt about the baby, and the pain he had to work through to reach that point of being able to move forward.

Do you think I would?

That's what he said.

Aaron's every action towards Seb since then has only affirmed what he himself said he already knew. That Robert would never have to force Seb on Aaron. And nor has he. Aaron wants to be part of Seb's life. To be there for him. Sure, they've had the standard new parents teething problems as it were (who actually does the most nappy changes, or takes the most feeds, or gets up more at night, or ensures that they're warm enough?). More and more we've seen Aaron volunteer for these different aspects (he's gone from not wanting to do a nappy change to actively helping Robert with them when they get a bad one, he also clearly knows Seb's feeding habits as per his conversation with Rebecca about Seb still being hungry, we've been given all the indicators that he gives him feeds, that he looks after him alone, can handle the pram/buggy just fine, can make bottles, has gotten used to Seb's things and the ever present baby laundry taking up space at the flat, that he takes Seb with him in the car, hence the baby carrier), to the point where now, particularly since they've taken on Seb's full time care (something that was also Aaron's idea), it's evident that he and Robert are fully sharing responsibility of Seb's day to day needs.

The reality is, practically every parent goes back and forth on these things, and some will always be better at some of them than the other(s) is/are. One is always going to be better at dealing with things like illness, or those dirty nappies, or getting them to stop crying, while another will fare far more easily with that Maths homework, or packing their kid's lunch and schoolbag, or making a chicken dinner. That's life. Parents aren't perfect. They're just people. All of them on a learning curve. Mostly trying to do the best they can. What makes them are their actions. And the things they do with love.

Yes, perhaps Aaron's relationship with Seb going forward from the reunion point began with him seeing him as part of Robert and as Robert's little boy. But now? I think Aaron's already beyond that. His actions bear that out. Yes, maybe there are still wider discussions to be had as to the dynamics of their family going forward; things like what names they'll use, and legalities to protect them all in different circumstances, and checking in with how Aaron feels overall as their bond develops, all valid things. But make no mistake, that bond is already there. For Seb (who stops crying when he's back cradled against Aaron, who knows his voice, and reacts to his smiles and the faces he makes, who is clearly at ease settled on his knee and in his arms), and for Aaron.

For Aaron, because he made the decision to be a parent that night in that garage as he sat on the ground and held Robert's hand. He knew what it would entail and he asked Robert to let Aaron show him he was ready. Ready to be not just his partner and husband again, but a parent to Seb too. Robert loves Aaron and Robert loves Seb. Aaron loves Robert and Aaron loves Seb. They both love Liv. They love each other and they love Seb and Liv. In time I'm sure we'll see a deeper bond develop between Liv and Seb too. None of these things are mutually exclusive. All this love can exist. And from all I've seen them say and do, it does.

For Aaron and Seb, that bond started there on that garage floor, when Aaron opened up his heart and his life to him, and bit by bit ever since we've seen it grow. In everything he does for Seb and in every way he is with him.

Maybe for some that isn't what a parental bond is. I don't know. But to me Aaron is a parent because he chose to be. And because he loves the child he chose to be a parent to. He loves him.

He loves Seb. And that to me is everything.

Positive Trans Representation in TV and Movies

Now in 2018, we have more trans characters being created than ever.  But as I’m always pointing out to people, more is not necessarily better.  Sure, popular media like Silence of the Lambs and The Rocky Horror Picture Show did bring trans characters into the mainstream, but I would argue that representation that paints trans people as serial killers and rapists is representation we’d probably be better off without.  So to combat this sort of demonization, I’m compiling a list of shows and movies that give us positive trans representation. The way that I define positive will definitely be different from the way that others define it, but here are my criteria:

The character must not be “evil”.  To elaborate on this, the character in question cannot be a murderer, a sociopath, or one of those trans characters who “tricks” innocent cis people into having relationships with them.  

The character must not be murdered.  This is a trope I see far too much, and frankly while perhaps realistic in some ways considering the rate of violence against trans people, it still doesn’t feel positive to me to further a culture of violence against us by killing our characters in disturbing and gruesome ways.

The character must have a personality/plotline outside of being trans.  In other words, trans characters should be presented as people with thoughts and feelings and lives that are influenced by their trans identity, rather than their trans identity being the thing mentioned about them.

They must be respected by other characters and, if not the main character in a movie or show, be respected by the main character.  Having a protagonist who mocks or misgenders trans characters is not positive representation.

Must not be created as a joke or a character to be mocked (the “man in a dress” trope is tired, offensive, and needs to be retired.)

Trans characters should be portrayed by people of their gender: cis women can play trans women; cis men should not play trans women.  This one does get a little tricky because there are portrayals I have found to be very compelling in which people of a different gender are playing trans characters.  In cases where representation is otherwise positive I will make a note.

Character is fictional.  Documentaries and dramatic retellings can definitely be good representation, but I’m currently interested in the ways in which storytellers incorporate us into their writing.

  And now, onto the titles!

  Sense8: This incredibly diverse series is notable for its portrayal of Nomi (Jamie Clayton), a trans woman, who is one of the main characters.  Nomi is strong, intelligent, caring, and highly respected by the other members of the sensate. Furthermore, her relationship with Amanita is one of endless, dedicated love, something not often given to trans characters in media.  The show is also written by the Wachowski sisters, who are both trans.

Grey’s Anatomy: In season 14, Casey Parker is introduced as a trans intern, and is played by Alex Blue Davis, who is trans.  There is also buzz about Candis Cayne, a trans woman, playing a trans character in the upcoming season. (She’s confirmed, edit)

Little Evil: This Netflix original movie presents Al, one of the main characters, who is presented as trans or perhaps gender nonbinary.  Al is played by a cis woman, Bridget Everett, but his portrayal is important in that his identity is accepted by all other characters and dealt with casually and respectfully.  Al uses he/him pronouns and calls himself a “stepdad” but that’s all that is stated specifically about his gender.

Tangerine: Tangerine premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.  Shot entirely on iphones, this movie follows two trans sex workers, both played by trans women (Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez).  The film is marketed as a comedy/drama.

Transparent: While there have been many criticisms of this show revolving around a cis man playing a trans woman, this show is still notable for its trans characters portrayed by trans women and its production, which heavily involved members of the community.  While I personally am unwilling to support this show following accusations of harassment and transphobia against Jeffrey Tambor, I think trans actresses Alexandra Billings and Trace Lysette deserve credit for their portrayals. The show is also created by Jill Soloway, who is nonbinary.

All My Children: This deserves a mention for its character Zoe, one of the first trans characters on daytime television.  While Zoe is portrayed by a cis male actor which is obviously not ideal, she is given a full story arc which involves discovering her identity, surviving an attack from a killer (it is a soap opera after all), coming out to and reconnecting with her parents, making thought out and informed medical decisions that are right for her, and having a positive romantic relationship with a female character on the show.

The Fosters: This show featured a recurring trans character (Aaron Baker), played by trans actor Elliot Fletcher, who has a positive romantic relationship with one of the show’s main characters, Callie.  Aaron’s character is an important one for a number of reasons. He is more than just a romantic interest; he also helps to prove the innnocence of another recurring character who is falsely accused of murder.  He was introduced in season 4 and is expected to continue into the upcoming season six.

Elementary: Candis Cayne, trans actress, portrays Miss. Hudson in a twist on the original character in the Sherlock Holmes stories.  While her character is seen relatively infrequently, her transness is only really mentioned once and then accepted by all of the characters on the show.  She is an expert in Ancient Greek and Latin and is revealed to have helped Holmes in solving a cases before. While only in a few episodes so far, I have hope that we will see more of Miss Hudson as the show progresses.

One Day at a Time: Last but definitely not least, this list would not be complete without mentioning the groundbreaking sitcom that introduced a nonbinary character named Syd who uses they/them pronouns and has a positive romantic relationship with Elena, a main character on the show.  Syd is not played by a nonbinary person as far as I know; but for me that didn’t take away from this portrayal too much. I can count on my fingers how many nonbinary characters I’ve EVER encountered in any type of media, and seeing my own gender represented in a positive and respectful way by such a popular show is enough for me right now.

A Fantastic Woman: Since this film just won the Oscar for best foreign language film, I think it’s absolutely necessary to include it here.  A Fantastic Woman tells the story of a transgender woman as she deals with life, love, family, self acceptance, and grief.  Trans actress Daniela Vega gives an unforgettable and three dimensional performance that on its own makes this Chilean film deserving of its award.

  For me, the takeaway from this project has been, perhaps unsurprisingly, that we still have a long way to go.  I look forward to a day where I can write a list and not settle for mentioning cis people who play trans people because trans people are being cast in roles by and for them.  I look forward to the day when I can update this article to 10, 15, maybe 100 entries of well written, positive, and nonbinary inclusive representation. But for now, this is a good start and I was happy to watch shows and movies that made me feel positive about a future that includes accurate portrayals and acceptance.

“dean’s queerness is most specifically proven in his relationships outside of cas” is spot-on. Benny is the biggest one, but there are a TON of one-episode or more minor male characters, and even one-offs, that Dean has intense, emotionally charged, and/or queercoded relationships with.

Ash, Gordon, Andy, Deacon, Victor, Nick the siren, Dr. Sexy, Syd, Eliot Ness, Aaron, Cain, Crowley, Cole, Gunner Lawless, Lee…I could go on.
