What’s your favorite Konoha tradition or custom?

The Hi no Yūrei Matsuri (Festival of the Fire Spirits) is a tradition turned festival we hold on the last full moon of winter. The practice first took place during the Shodai's 7th year as Hokage. It’s a time when shinobi activity is limited to the essentials so that most nin can return to the village to participate. We use this time to honor those who gave their lives for Hi no Kuni—our fallen comrades, family members, those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Family members and loved ones visit the graves or memorials of their dead, offering flowers, incense, and prayers. It’s a personal moment for every family, but rooted in ancient traditions passed down through the generations. You’ll see every clan has its own way of paying respect—different customs, but all with the same purpose. To remember.

Once the sun sets the lanterns are lit and set afloat on the river. Some prefer airborne lanterns. The lanterns symbolize the spirits of the departed, a way of guiding them, letting them know they’re still with us, even in death. It’s a peaceful sight—a moment of reflection.

Afterward, the people gather for meals with their loved ones. We share food, drink, and stories of those who came before us. The ones we have lost. It’s a time to reflect on their sacrifices but also to remind ourselves why we continue to fight. It’s not just about mourning. It’s about honoring their legacy, blending sorrow with hope for the future.

For the early years of my life, I found this practice extremely saddening. Years has given me perspective, making it one of my favorites. As the Godaime, I appreciate it more than ever.

“It-It’s okay,” Jayce said, cringing at the way his teeth chattered. “W-We can stay, w-we haven’t even seen th-the ice sculptures.”

“Jayce, it is okay if--oh?” Viktor looked up, but not at Jayce. His gaze was fixed on something behind him, and he suddenly walked towards it, leaving Jayce to turn around. 

It was a streetlight, and clearly, falling in the light was--
