i've pointed this out in written replies before , but i want to make it a headcanon post : yuji himself downplays his smarts and figures he's not battle - smart or good at strategy like his friends are , or figures that he doesn't have book smarts for subjects like science and math either , but he's got a rather sharp & often times dead on emotional intelligence . he can tell when people are acting different or when something is bothering someone , he's a great person to seek comfort from , and to ask advice on emotions from . he can even tell when people are being dishonest most of the time , manipulative , or outright cruel ( think junpei's emotional blackmail & , and the many , many situations with sukuna . of course he also wants to see the humanity behind his enemies , be that to his detriment or otherwise . this is how he connects to his former "enemies" like choso , kechizu and eso . ) he's got a strong sense of empathy , and can put himself in anyone's shoes to see their reasoning and see the situation through their eyes . this is a double - edged sword though . it hits yuji much harder when they fail to save someone ( for example , again , junpei , or nobara , or even nanami . ) or when yuji's got to hurt someone close to him . on one end , the fact that he feels any of that pain is reaffirmation that being a sorcerer hasn't emotionally numbed him , but on the other , the pain can becoming incapacitating , such as when sukuna massacred suguru's daughters and everyone hiding in shibuya . likewise , that acceptance is what grants him the strength to make even a curse like mahito flee in terror from him . but he'd still , stubbornly refuse to numb himself , even to save himself from future agonies ; it's what makes him an effective sorcerer , pushing through and beyond unbelievable pain .

the history of " ryomen sukuna " . ( au , canon compliant , subject to alterations if needed . )

the human " ryomen sukuna " was born in XXXX . initially , to a human non - sorcerer family . he worked alongside sorcerers and lived in and among them and their facilities . sorcerers back then were rare , and as one himself , ryomen worked to expand his influence and hone his talents . he fell into a routine existence : hunting , learning , killing , repeat . a man of solitude , his practices were primarily not for the eyes of others . a master of archery alongside sorcery , ryomen was acknowledged by the emperor on more than one occasion , for a multitude of feats . he is the first sorcerer to utilize a domain expansion to its full , unlimited potential . he's known at this time as a hero , saving the lives of villagers , and being a vital part of the mission to first begin a retaliation against the colossal curses that roamed the country freely . a prideful man , ryomen was known as another one of the first official sorcerers authorized by the elders to take on special grade curses by himself .

... indiscriminate in his acts ; ryomen honed his abilities beyond the elders' teachings , testing his endurance & gradually going beyond even the elder sorcerers' abilities . the human ryomen sukuna was enlisted to hunting more dangerous , lethal curses . gathering more knowledge as the days went on , the elders quickly became concerned with ryomen's advancing power ... certainly , it kept curses at bay , but a single man with so much knowledge and the power to put that knowledge to the test was a danger to jujutsu society & the result was that the situation quickly became unstable .

the human ryomen sukuna was executed after the XXXXX incident , in which sorcerers lost XXXXX and XXXXXX . these incidents correspond with the first reports of a demon calling itself " sukuna " . singlehandedly wiping out the sorcerers at his former home , " sukuna " was appalled by their lack of strength and from then out , the hunt for the curse " sukuna " began . this also corresponds with the XXXX war among humans . with their priorities split , sorcerers were forced by sukuna and the demands of his prowess to utilize more techniques , experiment with domains and cursed energy to stop this overwhelmingly evil curse & humans were being slaughtered left and right not only by their own hands , but by sukuna and other curses prowling the night . sukuna is said to have had his share of allies around this time ; a young man in white is repeatedly mentioned but not given a name . without a name , it has been impossible to track this individual . sukuna took advantage of the murders and gathered both humans and sorcerers and consumed them . reports vary in what way he " consumed " sorcerers , but they showed up mutilated shortly after they were noted as missing & drained of cursed energy . the first reports of sukuna by living humans were monstrous : a being with two separate faces , four arms , with a mountain's raw strength . any sorcerers dispatched to take sukuna's head were often dropped a bloody , disemboweled mess on the temple steps in a simple but effective warning . an unshakable curse , sukuna's expressions were never noted having shifted while he was free . ( frankly , he seemed bored even when presented with a fight . ) many sorcerers died trying to stop sukuna . villages accepted him , sacrificing children to him , or young people to satiate his appetite for blood . their deaths were agonizing , bodies prepared by the boy in white that was always at sukuna's side . a bloody reign of ten years , sukuna lay waste to the country of japan as he saw fit . it took the great sacrifice of XXXXXX lives , and great strength from incoming sorcerers to to weaken him enough to perform an exorcism . XXXXXX lives were sacrificed to sukuna in totality . it is unknown how many were eaten . 20 fingers were each removed and put into boxes , and the sorcerers who hid them committed XXXXXXX by their own hand to keep their locations a secret . sukuna , weakened and on the brink of his second death , died in stubborn silence on that spot in front of his allies . his body is enshrined underneath XXXXXXX mountain , one of three holy sites & the one closest to the realm of the dead among the three . if a human is known certainly to house the soul of ryomen sukuna , he is to be executed swiftly before the consumption of the soul . this terror cannot sweep through modern day japan . he must be executed by any means necessary .

alright you guys wanted it , so here it is . below the cut is a " ( romantic ) shipping guide " for my muse , ryomen sukuna . this post will essentially detail anything i think is vital when being involved in a romantic relationship with him , or getting close to him at all .

beware , there is information under the cut about gore , violence , cannibalism , war , and terror . this man , this curse , isn't easy to stomach for most people and even less likely to romance . his information will not be typical , he isn't even human , he hasn't been human in three millennium at least . tread carefully . this will CONTAIN STORY SPOILERS .

first and foremost , ryomen sukuna is a human that existed 3000 years back during the heian era . this much is concrete canon , but here we'll get into headcanon territory and other noncanonical material , so do keep that in mind , this pertains to my headcanon ryomen sukuna compared to canon sukuna . my ryomen sukuna's human years were spent as an instructor of jujutsu , much like satoru , working under the watchful eye of the surrounding society and bowing to their whims for some time . he only began to push his limits when he began to operate outside their rules ; developing a cursed technique , finding new methods to utilize cursed energy that was seen as troublesome and dangerous to be experimenting with at the time . though sukuna had a few students , he didn't have any near the end of his life as a human , and put forth all his energy into finding new and interesting ways to weaponize jujutsu and cursed energy . he was a master of it by the time that the elders found out what he was doing , planning to toppel the established government of the real , very much normal world , which meant killing the reigning emperor , emperor kammu .

however , since sukuna grew up during this time , he's well versed in all manner of poetry , most of all in haiku . although this isn't to say he was the one writing it , since he was the current most powerful sorcerer , many of those around him seek HIS hand rather than the other way around . so , that's to say ryomen is used to having women and men looking to court HIM rather than HIM having to do anything for anyone else . he refuted them all , of course , no matter how extravagant the display . he did not marry , he did not have children , he was the only ' sukuna ' , his lineage was dependent on him & him alone . he quite preferred it that way . that being said , he was quite the cultured individual , he attended plays and theater , spent his time mingling with the higher class and aristocracy . looking at him in modern day , it might be hard to imagine that people would once look forward to seeing him anywhere for any reason .

that is to say his first execution interrupted his plans & his reign as a sorcerer , and began his life as a curse . this is when his ' beautiful ' face was transformed , when he was stripped of his sorcerer prestige , but went on wrecking havoc as a curse . with uraume at his side , up until the day of his death , he finds himself in a sort of existential limbo . yet , thanks to sheer fortitude , he kept his sanity in tact until he was incarnated into the modern day .

in the modern day , much of what sukuna was once honored for is seen as barbaric and offensive , par for the course when dealing with the changing times . one of the few things that he's happy to have kept is the pretty face , or rather , happy to have acquired it . in the heian era , a pretty face was indicative of good nature , and he uses that to his advantage . getting him to approve and tolerate your muse isn't difficult , sukuna wouldn't say he's asking for too much ; just your absolute and utter loyalty and , if he can't have that , then what use are you ? if you're not powerful yourself , why should he regard you at all ? he values power . raw , unadulterated , strength . but being that he is also a teacher , if he sees potential , he's not against helping and pointing out what you need to work on , like he does with megumi multiple times . just quit listening to that brain dead modern day sorcerer and listen to me . i can train you . i can help you . i can make you something worthy . he sees this as , not manipulating , but a genuine favor .

ryomen is also , like satoru , demiromantic . he has an interesting view on sexuality , especially since he sees it as a means to an end instead of romantic . so that brings us to his dates -- and his dates are simple , refined , but simple ; just being in the same room together is good enough , doing your own things , not necessarily together . he likes music , mostly traditional style . he is a big fan of peace and serenity , incense , candles , red lacquer , all those things are gifts that he would like .

that being said . he doesn't want to hear " oh how could you do this " or " that's terrible " when he's eating people and human limbs . it's a quick way to end up on the receiving end of dismantle . however , this does mean hearts , human hearts , are a big deal , and he'll accept them as gestures of romance . he'll be eating it though , as a reciprocation gesture .

he is terribly possessive though . and i mean possessive in a bad way . he'll chain you down if he thinks you might run away . or he'll break your legs if he gets even the inkling of a feeling that you'll flee . if he doesn't have your word , you're a liability . after all , that's another thing about sukuna ; he is lonely at the top , but he , unlike satoru , has accepted it , and accepted that no one will be capable of reaching him . it's simply not possible . simple humans , simple as ever , could not and would not ever be at his level . it's a sad , 3000 year realization .

below the cut is a " ( romantic ) shipping guide " for my muse , geto suguru . this involves anything i think is vital when being involved in a romantic relationship with him in any regard .

* this will involve talk of " satosugu / sugusato ' stsg " , so beware , but satoru plays a big part in suguru's life , that is inarguable , his relationships are founded on the relationship he cultivated between him & satoru fundamentally . & the falling out has affected how he views his relationships going forward .

a supportive partner doesn't begin to cover the kind of partner suguru geto is . as someone who born and raised on the protection of others' principal , he's either of some kind of service to his partner or he's not around . when he's doing missions for the tokyo technical college , he's no second rate -- one half of the strongest duo to exist in service to jujutsu tech . often tuned in to the emotions of others , he's going to know something is wrong way before you yourself do , and he takes pride in being capable of being on the same wavelength as his fellow students . duty before dishonor , he's an individualist with great care taken to lift up others . as for the timeline , of course it's easiest to ship with him during his school days , especially if your muse is satoru . more reckless with his other half , he still values himself in accordance with what exactly he can do to be of service to someone . this goes double for his friends , triple for his significant other . girls at the school often crush on him , but to this day , he'd turned them all down gently , in the most polite way possible , so no one leaves upset . justice is a high contributing factor to suguru , something he holds in high regard . again , he's long been raised under the ideal that he must serve others , that he's there to protect others , to act as a barrier between what he values and harm . this is why he continues to find , hunt , and consume curses . now , one of his favorite things is letting his friends hang out with his curses -- satoru , after all , rides on the rainbow dragon all the time . it lays its head on his legs , his curses are merely pets in everyday circumstances , and he values them , saying things like " thank you for your hard work " , when dismissing them . he is , after all , a beast - tamer . again , a lot of these things pertain to satoru , since satoru is his best friend , and someone suguru holds in the highest regard despite their bickering and whining about one another when someone's watching them .

after the loss to toji fushiguro / zen'in , suguru is unstable . he is overall paranoid , half of his curse reserves are dead , and that's what he spends a lot of his time doing now ; hunting new curses to digest and manifest , stronger , more disgusting , more heinous . so it's somewhat easy to catch him during that time dragging himself around , getting to the station or the bus to take it to wherever he needs to go . he won't let anyone come with him , he's uncomfortable , VASTLY uncomfortable with anyone seeing him digest a curse . it's a gross act , on par with eating trash , or vomit . he hates his technique . he hates that he was useless . he hates that his best friend died because he couldn't do a damn thing . a lot of bad emotions manifest here within the year following the mission , rage , disgust , hatred , spite . he hates it . the clapping won't leave his head . he can still hear it . why is he the only one bothered by what happened ?

students die . despite geto's best efforts to help , haibara yu , his kouhai , dies in a gruesome manner he can't even bear to look at . when this happens , he begins to think more and more -- oh god , everyone is at risk , everyone's disposable , and i can't protect anyone . satoru doesn't need me anymore . shoko's busy . i failed nanami & haibara , what am i doing here ? why am i alive ? i don't deserve to be alive .

once he's free of jujutsu technical college , well , his mental health does get eons better . he spends a lot of his time with nanako and mimiko , that includes going to their school events and spending time with them as they do their homework -- dinner , bed , all the more routine things he's long since forgotten about since he was small . he doesn't mind it , it's terribly routine though , and it helps him relax , knowing what to expect every afternoon and evening . if he has a significant other by this point , fully expect to be introduced to his two girls ! he wants to know what they'll think of you , whether or not you interact well with them , and he's keen to also see how you interact with the followers of the cult and the normal people who come in seeking treatment for ' spiritual ailments ' . a partner , in other words , is what suguru is seeking . someone that will help him take good care of the girls as they grow up , someone level headed , that can see he's merely protecting what he finds important to him now . he doesn't hate jujutsu tech , nor anyone involved with it , he simply hates how easily they can stand to sentence people to death ..... especially children , young people who have their whole lives ahead of them . he hates it with everything inside of him . and he can't stop them , so he broke away from them while he still had something left to save .

he's relying on the donations of his followers , somewhat , so he doesn't tend to dabble in the expensive side of dating or living his life . he's a simple ' monk ' , spending his time around the temple as needed , and spending his time with his new family that we see in jjk 0 , who also believe in his ideals and his goals . he's not forcing anyone to believe what they don't want to , and he makes sure everyone understands that he's not forcing anyone into anything they do not wish to be involved in . because of that , there's a silent agreement among his family that they're all there because they believe in suguru geto's vision for jujutsu society , a place where children aren't sacrificed , where people don't have to die needlessly . peaceful , tranquil , livable . that , and ... the ' monkeys ', the non - shaman ... they're a threat to that peace. he's going to save this fucked up , shitty world that they've created . one day , he'll find a way . he will , he swears . he'll help everyone . one day . it's okay if he's hated by everyone as long as ... he's quite open about seeing those from jujutsu tokyo tech & kyoto tech , if need be . he's a haven , he'll listen and talk , offer his view on things as its asked . he truly does love his children and his family, and those he left behind too , if only they could understand that ... he may not go about seeing his significant other too much in public though . just in case the higher ups zero in on them . it's safe to say that in order to get anywhere with suguru , you need to be on par with him , at least , or a sorcerer yourself for a variety of reasons .

What kind of warmth are you?

. . . holding your hand . you're sweet, generous with your kindness, and excited to give to others. your warmth is obvious and contagious. people often can't help but smile around you. your loved ones usually come to you with good news first, because they know you'll match their excitement automatically and emphatically. your warmth provides a safe place for others to be authentically themselves. you're highly emotional, and there might be times where it suddenly feels harder to love others the way you usually do. don't force yourself to stay so positive. you can still help others, even when you don't feel so bright and sunny. and you're still worthy of love, even when you feel you have nothing left to give.

. . . soup on a cold day . you're caring, consistent in your kindness, and quiet in your compassion for others. you offer warmth because you were cold for a very long time. and you refuse to stand by while others suffer in the same way. your kindness is not reckless. you count the costs, but you offer it anyway. you have a unique ability at reading people, and knowing when they have a pain that they are trying to cover up. your love language is probably quality time, and you're usually more of a listener in conversations. you probably find yourself taking on a caretaker role with others, almost automatically. so when people try to do the same for you, please don't flinch away. please don't withdraw into what feels like safety. there are people who are waiting to love you in the same way you have loved them. please let them.

man . gojo totally took it upon himself to teach his students to be selfish because he saw how geto acted during the year before he left , trying not to be a burden , trying not to act any different for his sake , for others' sake . when he finally did figure out exactly why suguru didn't confide in him , he resolved to teach his allies that he was their ally as much as they were his , & that meant that they could depend on him , talk to him , confide in him about anything . be selfish . think of yourself . act in ways no one else understands . save yourself before you go saving anyone else .

i feel like people tend to forget that gojo's not the hero & therefore , his morals are a bit more in the grey compared to someone like yuji . he's able to get bloody , he's welcome to do things that aren't strictly good , and REMAIN the BIG GOOD of the series by default . he's not above murder , not when it gets him his way , and he's not above lying , manipulating , or otherwise being untruthful in order to get people to either do things for him or get where he needs them to be . he's just the most valuable , powerful force of ( mostly ) GOOD the jujutsu world has at their disposal against forces like kenjaku & sukuna , with yuta being a runner-up . this title of " hero " or " good " doesn't necessarily cancel out the fact he's bordered on massacre many times . he's got power , and the word power doesn't necessarily mean that the force is one of " good " or " evil " , it just is . much like gojo , he just is . he's not the protagonist , he's not the all loving hero yuji is capable of being , he's not above a little slaughter to get to where he needs to be and it's because he's not the protagonist that he can get away with it .

anyway . sukuna values his own personal freedoms above all else , his own tastes & freedom to act as he sees fit . in this week's translations , too , we see him telling kashimo . " to be satisfied by others isn't something i've thought about . if they're an eyesore , kill them . if it's fun , just have fun . " he's never even thought about having someone other than himself satisfy himself , sukuna isn't tied to anyone or anything , and he doesn't care about comparing himself to others , he's the avatar of complete and utter freedom . the freedom to learn , to kill , to create , to abstain . sukuna can live beside and exist beside people who do not seek to take this away , as evidence by uraume , but not kenjaku . uraume doesn't seek to control sukuna nor feed off of him , they exist on their own beside him . kenjaku , however , constantly tries to wind sukuna around to their methods and their way of thinking , to get in line with x or y plan . sukuna can form attachments , but not attachments as typical humans would think of them , as a give and take system . he forms his relationships on can you exist on your own beside me , without trying to use me & bind me ? he's so far removed from human thinking , that he's become the absolute strongest . he's long given up on asking anyone to understand him because after 3,000 years , he knows that nobody can . to be strong & expect human connections , to be strong and ask humans to understand you ... that's greedy . that's what he tells gojo & kashimo . he finds his friends among fellow people who , too , cannot be understood .

yuji self harms . no , not in a traditional knife to the skin kind of way , he's much more sneaky about it in that sense . if yuji feels as through he could have done better , could have done more , and that he should have , he's far more likely to overexert himself to some pretty extreme levels as a form of personal punishment , especially post shibuya . shibuya is when all his optimism about the world and about helping others without regard comes to a head , and he realizes that he very rarely actually helps at all , and thusly drops his optimistic outlook on the world and on sorcerers . he will fight , he will fight until he's exhausted himself , he will pull muscles , he will strain to get the results he's looking for , which is pain . he feels as if he needs to be punished and if no one else will do it , he will do it to himself . of course , yuji also doesn't realize that this is a form of self harm either . self harm to him is the traditional knife to the skin , so overexertion isn't self - harming as far as he's concerned . sukuna isn't about to stop him either , in fact , he gets a certain enjoyment watching yuji stress and hyper - focus on the pain .

on gojo's loneliness . . . .

anyone looking to form a close relationship with satoru will meet the inevitable roadblock that is his experience with suguru geto . especially in canon , satoru is very hard on himself for never seeing his friend's suffering until it was all around too late to do anything about it , so he has worked tirelessly to read into the emotions and expressions of the people around him , even if only to save himself the future pain . he was extremely close with suguru , and he and suguru were equals for some time , & that meant everything to satoru who had , up until then , tasted bitter and unrelenting loneliness due to his abilities & six eyes / infinity . while suguru consumed and ingested the dirtiness of the world , satoru was the one left out of touch with it , separated from it , where his only real connection was through suguru . he depended on suguru's moral compass and direction when he was younger and didn't take others into account . that's why it's going to be somewhat difficult to get him to open up beyond surface level , and he may never do that again , since he doesn't see himself having another relationship like that ever again & as a result , it becomes a sort of self fulfilling prophecy . he is first and foremost defined by his own isolation and loneliness , even by other characters , who openly comment that him being strong makes him an outlier to the normal world , and to jujutsu society on top of that . why get close to people if you're only going to have to go through their inevitable departure ? is the pain worth going through again ? can he survive it again ? being abandoned by suguru left a scar on satoru's heart , and it remains no matter how long ago it's been . people are still unknowable things , and if he hasn't known you for literal years , ten years , more , don't expect him to just immediately take to his own emotions . sure , it might be love , but love scares him . it's a curse he's carried around for ten years at this point , and he drags around his loss like a dead body behind him . forever . love is the curse he sleeps beside , eats with , breathes .

akira's " you have ... an incredible spike . " is the most SNIDE line . " didn't the principal tell you to keep in line ? " answered with " didn't your parents teach you not to hit people that disagree with you ? " literally the second closest akira came to getting another charge .

suguru is also designed like an ' evil / false ' bodhisattva , or somebody on the path to enlightenment in buddhism . chapter 70 has him drawn with an inverted mudra ( a specific immobile position of the fingers , hands , elbows , shoulders , & arms ) , which indicates that he's a false prophet / offers no salvation in the long run despite his amassed group of followers . he's even called buddha - like in 0 - 3 by a visitor to the temple .

honestly megumi's not outwardly affectionate , but he is affectionate with his shadows . they're a part of him , an extension of himself , and though they may not be real animals , he has no problem treating tham like they are . hell , he regularly has his dogs with him outside of missions and jobs , such as when he's playing baseball with everyone . if there's every any doubt about megumi being a good person , his shadows wouldn't be so protective of him & him of them . he's always valued his shadows / animals more than people , especially since their intentions are most likely nature , and have a lot less tendency to lie & be cruel for no reason . this affection extends past his shadows too , to everyday animals like birds , cats , and dogs that wander around the campus or ones he sees on his trips to town . he's a lot less likely to be affectionate and doting if he knows he's being watched though , god knows he hates being teased about it . ( it's also why he feels sick seeing someone else , namely sukuna , use his dogs and animals for war . if he was in the right headspace , he'd have words about it for sure . )

sukuna's kimono specifically is of common design , but this outfit itself is worth a small fortune . being as fearsome of a curse as he is , getting much of anything that is known to have belonged to sukuna himself is worth a small fortune & most of what he's known to have owned back from the hiean era has been blessed and destroyed or otherwise sanctified out of fear of him getting his hands on it again . his spear / staff , his physical bow , all sanctified and blessed & out of his reach , like his fingers . & truth is , he's trained by old masters in a variety of weapons including by not limited to : naginata , bow & arrow , spears , katana , kama , fans of war ( gunsen & tessen ) & even the small yawara .

the tips of sukuna's fingers & limbs seem to discolor into black near the end . from his fingertips ( beginning at the second section of each digit & becoming darker near the nail ) , to his palms , he's scorched . like his physical markings , these too disappear when yuji takes over & fronts , but they're apparent on sukuna's skin . in cruel irony , his natural body temperature runs hotter than a normal person's . even sukuna isn't sure if this is he himself or a trace of the itadori brat's natural body temperature .

his nails are fashioned in the shape of claws specifically to scare and otherwise intimidate his enemies . filed down into the shape , they're quite sharp , and their effectiveness doesn't stop with mere scratching , but scooping , stabbing , and gouging out . that being said , he's capable of being somewhat caring , oftentimes folding his hands into his sleeves to keep them from unintentionally hurting others .

no i'm not emotional today over the fact that despite sukuna switching vessels , yuji no longer having access to his enhancements in strength or durability , power , or survival skills . . . he still took 1000 cuts head on & managed to get one really good hit in on sukuna himself . sukuna unceremoniously plays yuji down ( notice he didn't look at yuji at all when fighting between him and maki , and saying " i was right to focus my energy on that woman " to uraume . ) in an effort to demean him , belittle him , yuji's not going to let sukuna take his partner , the one person who's been there since the beginning , the one who spared his life , and the one who got him through shibuya , get taken away so easily . even if megumi's soul is no longer visible , even if he can't feel it , yuji won't give up on finding it . if he has to separate the two , he will find a way or he'll die trying . he's not about to lose anyone else this close to victory . & frankly , sukuna's gonna regret laying a hand on megumi if yuji has anything to say about it .
