it was quite unusual, the bundle of nerves that twisted in his stomach after those words left his mouth.  the hesitance she had to answer merely made it worse and he wasn’t quite sure how to go about it.  it’s unfamiliar to him.  perhaps it was the guilt that came with seemingly handing her back without a thought.

“DAMNIT, levi,” is pepper’s hushed reply as she sees the blood pooling between levi’s fingers. but there’s no ANGER in her voice, merely concerned frustration. it’s the same tone she takes with TONY and with MORGAN. thankfully morgan is tucked into bed upstairs, and not underfoot as pepper takes levi’s good arm and directs her into the kitchen.

“what happened this time?” she asks, grabbing a dishtowel and wrapping it tightly around the wound temporarily. “keep pressure on it; i’ll get the first aid kit.” she kneels down in front of the kitchen sink and pulls out the well-stocked first aid kit, lifting it up onto the counter.

ONE.                     they weren’t dating, not yet. some irrelevant movie played on the screen while harry sobered up and levi’s hand had found a spot to rest on his thigh ———- there was no avoiding it when she finally decided to lean over and kiss him for the first time. to this day, it was the best decision she ever made.TWO.                  they stood outside the restaurant of their first date. levi, in a stunning floor length red dress and harry in a suit that didn’t quite fit properly. her hands gently adjust his lapels and even in heels, she has to stretch up just slightly to place a chaste kiss on his chapped lips. it’s better than the first and means so much more now that she can call him her boyfriend. THREE.                     she’s transported to his home with her slingring, hands on his shoulders as his body rages. she knows it’s dangerous to be so close when he’s like this, but she forces him into a hug anyways. her forehead buried into his neck as she grips him as tightly as she possible can, and even as he fights (she can feel ribs cracking and just breathing begins to hurt), it was better he hurt her than killing any innocent people. it’s not until the struggling stops that her head raises, forehead pressing to his. a desperate, FORGIVING kiss to his lips as she winces from the pain building in her abdomen. FOUR.                      stephen walks her down the aisle, in the most beautiful dress she’d ever worn. the piano in the background plays some sappy tune and he takes her bouquet as he hands her off to harry and she’s so happy she could cry. the cool metal of the ring on her finger is the best feeling in the world and levi osborne kisses her husband like this is their last day together. so much love and happiness in one kiss, and nothing else in the world matters. FIVE.                    tears stream down her cheeks as she sits in the bed, harry’s head in her lap as she gently rubs a damp towel along his forehead, so careful not to hurt him. he was in so much pain, she knew that. he wouldn’t have asked her if he wasn’t. her heart is SHATTERED, and she knows she’ll never recover from this, no matter how many more thousands of years she might live. how stupid it was of her, to think she’d be okay falling in love with a human, and one with a terminal illness at that. it was pathetic, and she was cursing herself to the moon and back. but she’d never regret it, not for a second.                         she’d put it off much too long and she carefully brushes his hair out of his eyes, fingertips barely touching him. a spark of magic out of her hand and he’s gone, just like that. sobs wrack her body. screams burn her throat as she clings to him, desperately wishing there was more she could’ve done ——— but there was no saving him, no changing reality. it feels like hours before stephen appears, forcing her to let him go. one last kiss to his LIFELESS lips before she steps through the slingring and leaves stephen in charge of the burial. she couldn’t bury the person she loved more than life for a second time.
