Sneak preview. Chigiri time! (Chapter 2)

Planning to post tomorrow's chapter sometime in the evening. I had it finished early this week, but I had the final edited version saved in AO3... which I accidentally deleted by pasting another chapter's text into the Chapter 2 draft. 🥲

The chapter as it stands now is good... but is it as good as what I originally wrote? Doesn't matter. It no longer exists to compare, but I'm kicking myself. Re-doing the revisions took about three hours yesterday.

Day 3 of doing a pose a day challenge ✨

So, I know you've talked about how Jevil and Grillby's relationship is strained, but does Grillby ever warm up to him? In your fight comic, Jevils been shown to comfort Grillby, in small ways anyhow, lending him his cape and letting him mourn. You've stated how Jevil sympathizes with him. Does grillby ever do anything back? Does he ever comfort Jevil or help take care of him in any way?

Yes! Grillby did eventually warm up to him, although it took a while. And their relationship wasn't perfect after this event. There were still times afterwards where Grillby was in a low and hated Jevil all over again.. But this was the start.

The start to Grillby realizing that hating Jevil and being mean to him doesn't make him feel any better. And no matter how much he hates Jevil, its not gonna bring back what he lost. Its also getting harder and harder to hate Jevil anyways. He protects their group with all his might. And even with a horrible wound on his leg and exhaustion pulling at his soul.. he still stays up late to keep the fire going and guard the group.

And despite how mean Grillby has been, Jevil still treats him with the same care he does everyone else. Still sharing the same amount of food, still protecting him with all his might. Grillby doesn't understand why he does it. He doesn't know why Jevil would care about him despite how mean he's been. Why would Jevil be kind to him? Maybe that confusion is why that "thank you" made him light up so much. Its feels.. good, to be thanked. It feels good to be kind. Being kind feels much better than hating someone endlessly.

Listen, this little shit's species was hard to track down... SERIOUSLY! Like I had to go on Wikipedia for Chinese macaques and surf through them to see if they sorta matched Macaque (the character) and then find the closest matching species (which wasn't EVEN on Wikipedia, it was on an ecologist blog😭) which is like the Rhesus macaque! (best match I found so fair since they have a tail and are all over China.)

Wukong was easy

with Macaque? Mr Sixed Eared Macaque? Liu'er Mihou? nawww, he's a "magical monkey," thank you google, for being soOOoo helpful

Now I was tempted to make him more dopey like Wukong because monkey bros gotta have the same energy (until I remembered that I could do that anyway by fluffing his face like fluffing a pillow) SO i wanted him to have more of a mysterious and cool edge lord look (which ngl, more carries over in his persona and actions, woopy do) I also wanted to fit his two shadow monkeys here but there was no more room :(

Now with both of them done, I CAN DRAW MORE SHADOWPEACH, THE ENTIRE REASON I WAS LIKE "LET'S OVERHAUL THEIR LOOKS BC I DRAW THEM UGLY SMH"

one very potent zuko misconception i see in fic all the time is that zuko is very… conspicuous and also is totally oblivious to it. but that’s canonically not true at all. when he wants to be hidden, that’s exactly what he’ll do.

i am using this opportunity to remind you all that zuko:

broke into the pohai stronghold (twice) and stayed hidden until either a) he confronted someone or b) his and aang’s escape attempt which forced them to be in a vulnerable position

broke into the northern water tribe and remained unseen until he confronted katara in the oasis

before he broke into the north pole he stayed hidden on one of the fire nation ships until he could escape. yes, iroh was there, but to maintain his cover, zuko would have largely had to fend for himself

post-crossroads of destiny, he sneaks around the palace, into the dragon catacombs and to the prison without anyone he doesn’t purposely confront knowing

during the eclipse - he snuck away from the capital and out of the country on an air balloon (a highly suspicious act that he would have most definitely had to be discrete about - you know, since he was literally committing treason)

when directly confronted, he’s not the type to be able to just lie their way out (like when azula tricks him into telling him he visited iroh) but chances are he’s not going to let it get to that.
