Any advice on drawing McCoy? I’m not used to drawing ancient wrinkley bastards (affectionate) and it’s surprisingly tough v-v

FOR SURE lmao i made. a diagram. just a warning that i am going to be irritating and long winded because u just hit a topic i really like sorry lmao

so first off i did some traces just to show whats there vs redraws to show my interpretation

ive said this on other asks but again jsyk, tracing isnt bad!! its a tool. theres some stuff with intellectual property and whatnot but using tracing to study shapes and forms is a really valuable practice.

also just taking some time to learn facial structures and anatomy is super useful, reading what bones and muscles are where and how they interact with one another. taking this info and staring in the mirror and moving your face around and thinking about it. just really furthers understanding of how the face works. trying to sound normal about this but i love anatomy and motion and physics and whatever

anyways im going to go through all the numbered points so there's no confusion. 1. forehead lines - self explanatory. more prominent when brows are raised 2. crows feet - at the outer corners of the eyes, more prominent when smiling or squinting 3. nasolabial folds - the folds that go from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. more prominent when the mouth is wide, like smiling 4. brow furrow - self explanatory, most prominent when brows are furrowed. mccoy tends to have two right next to his eyebrows, kirk has one in the middle. everyones face works different lmao 5. chin crease - caused by how the chin and lower lip interact. 6. nasojugal groove - start from the inner corners of the eye and can extent over the cheeks. everyone has these and idk why people dont like them i think theyre really cool!!!! but Society. i guess. :/ 7. eye bags - caused by the skin sagging beneath the eyes. mccoy isnt even that old in tos i think hes meant to be mid 40s by the end of the 5 year mission, hes just got really prominent eye bags lmao 8. idk what the name is for these, but when the mouth is wide and pushes the skin to the sides, these folds sometimes form outside of the nasolabial folds 9. philtrum - the groove above the upper lip. i dont usually draw this but mccoy's struck me as prominent enough that i usually draw it on him 10. masseter - the muscle that moves the jaw up and down. its a pretty rugged muscle and while i wouldnt say mccoy's is especially prominent, it kind of extends that nasojugal groove from certain angles/positions 11. orbicularis oris - mouth muscle, usually easier to see when lips are pursed or frowns are pulled. mccoy's is pretty prominent from 3/4ths or side, his mouth tends to protrude in profile 12. this isnt a muscle but more of a line defining the planes of the face, but since i drew it i felt i should explain lmao

a few points:

im an animator i tend to exaggerate and emphasize certain things so i usually make him more square.

i like to combine eyebags and crows feet for brevity/flow, same with nasojugal grooves, eyebags, and masseter lines. my approach is always subject to change based on pose, expression, reference image, etc.

i take out details that i deem redundant or cluttering and keep what details i need to make things feel Right

all this info is applicable to any character of any age, its just in how you apply it and facial proportions that willl change how old a character is perceived to be

there's a lot more with drawing a Character rather than an Actor, just because the features are there doesnt necessarily mean things will feel correct? its very much in the mannerisms and poses and expressions

i only went over my approach to his likeness but not really body type or posing or anything idk if u want that i could always try to answer that later haha

anyways all that info kind of exists nebulously in my brain while i draw its not like im sitting there thinking Must Draw. Nasolabial Fold...... i jsut do what feels right with the visual info i have. also i love specificity in faces.... i dont like to be a hater but when every character is drawn the same it pisses me off a little lmao. so

also dont take my word as The Only Way to do anything i just draw how i like to draw and no one should feel like these are things that Must be done to be a good artist or anything do whatever the hell u wanna do

"This is bad." Deuce struggled to raise his head, instead slumping his shoulders and staring down at the notes in front of him. The writing started out neat and tidy but gradually became illegible, eventually fumbling off the page and marking the desk with ink.

Ace tried not to draw attention to the fit of giggles he had been overcome with. He kept looking away and clearing his throat now that the lecture had ended. Looking straight at Deuce without laughing was an impossible task.

"Dude..." he snickered. "That's a wild black eye you've got there."

"Shut it, Ace. If you knew I fell asleep during class, you should've woken me up."

Deuce sighed and buried his face in his hands, which only made things funnier. His palm smeared whatever eye makeup hadn't already been smudged, making him look beat up. His hands appeared to be covered in soot and a quarter of his face was a blurry mess of makeup instead of the usual elegant spade design.

It took a minute for Deuce to realize what happened. It was hard to tell if any got on his black uniform sleeves. He gazed at his dirty hands with despair. "Dang it. I don't have anything to fix this. The housewarden's gonna have my head."

Doubled over and clenching his stomach, Ace wiped a tear from his eye. At least one half of their combo remembered to seal his makeup that morning. "Don't sweat it! I have something that can help, don't worry."

It was a suspicious offer, but a sign of hope. Deuce would do anything if it meant avoiding Riddle's wrath. "Seriously? You carry black makeup? Uh, why?"

"Just in case! You should be thanking me instead of asking all these questions. What if I decide to change my mind, hmm?" Ace reached into his pencil case and started rooting around. He put on a great show of being serious. With one hand wrapped around something inside, he motioned for Deuce to come closer.

"Lean this way and close your eyes. There's not much time before Trein's next lecture."

Deuce grunted. Ace was right, and he didn't want to tarnish his future honor student reputation any further. The chair squeaked against the floor as he pushed it and swung his legs over the side. "I'll leave this to you, then. You can use the handkerchief in my bag."

"Great."

Ace hummed as he worked. Removing the blurry mess with Deuce's handkerchief came first, holding nothing back as he scrubbed his dorm mate's skin raw. Then it was time to reapply everything.

He gripped Deuce's chin, angling it upwards towards the light. "Hold still."

"Do you even know how to draw a spade?" Deuce asked.

"Hah? Who doesn't? What do you take me for?"

"It's just... you're taking a really long time to do this. Professor Trein's gonna come back soon."

"You really want to say that to the guy helping you out right now?"

Deuce got the point and remained silent. Applying his makeup usually didn't sting this much. He hoped he wouldn't get poked in the eye or have something inappropriate drawn in the end. Ace wouldn't go that far, right?

After a few blows to dry his face with Ace's gross breath, Deuce could finally relax. Ace proclaimed, "There. All done!"

"You really drew a spade, right?"

"Quit suspecting me! 'Course I did!" Ace turned to the student behind them. "Hey, what's this thing on Deuce's face look like?"

The student, caught off guard, glanced up from their phone. "Huh? The spade?"

"Yes, exactly. Thank you."

Deuce wished he had his handkerchief back to wipe the smug grin off Ace's face. "Alright, thanks. I really appreciate it, you've saved me."

"No problem, anytime. I'll even do your makeup tomorrow if you want." Ace began tidying up his desk space, straightening his notebook and putting his tools back, while Deuce returned his chair to its original position.

Deuce froze mid-chair scoot and narrowed his eyes. "What is that."

Ace pretended not to hear him. Deuce rose a shaky finger to his eye, gently tapping the sore skin.

He lowered his voice to a threat. "Dude. I swear to the Seven, if you just drew on my face with permanent marker..."

There was no time for Ace to enjoy the mischief, he had to stifle his laughter into his shirt as Trein finally returned and the students went quiet. He walked to the front podium and put his books down. A "pfft" snuck out the instant Deuce whacked Ace's chair with his foot.

A peeved off Deuce clenched his pen and mouthed, "this isn't over."

haven't posted some of my own art here in a hot sec so heres a random oc (not related to worm).

still trying to come up with a name for her but the concept for her is that she's like the big bad of an imaginary childrens book/tv show- with the intended age range of like gravity falls or animorphs.

long ramblings on her below:

her Backstory (tm) is kind of complicated but to sum it up she was the girlfriend of this guy who was like the Chosen One of this prophecy and she's his tragically fridged girlfriend who he had to sacrifice in order to stop the big bad (who just so happened to be her brother) from gaining too much power and potentially destroying the world.

In order to stop her brother he 'had' to lock him in this dungeon in hell (don't worry about it) which would drain his life force. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to convince her to leave her brother to die so she had to get locked in there as well.

so basically she was stuck in a creepy dungeon with her brothers corpse for potentially forever- unless she figured out a way to get out. She did eventually by studying her brothers arcane tattoos and sort of brute force replicating them until she could figure out a way to magically escape the catacombs. Of course this was a sort of out of the frying pan into the fire situation because after escaping she was still very much stuck in hell.

In this universe hell is like a dimension that's parallel to ours that's not really meant for people- even existing there is fatal to most people. Her newly gained magic was enough to stop her from dying but as she explored hell looking for a way out she found her body slowly changing. Becoming pale and then almost blue tinted, her eyes greying and pupil narrowing, her hair falling out. But the real change came when she hurt herself accidentally and instead of bleeding she cracked and instead of muscle she found something worse lurking underneath her skin- a sagging bloated corpse, waiting to be exposed.

The roots are an invention of hers- they helped her suck up the ambient magical energy in hells air so she could survive without food or water- of course, they were meant to be summoned from her palm, not sprout from her cracks, but beggars can't be choosers.

When she finally escaped hell she found that instead of struggling to filter hells toxic energy into scraps of something usable, her roots sucked up the plentiful mana of the overworld with abandon- suddenly she was more powerful than those who had spent their life studying arcana.

Now a days she spends her time gathering a group of loyal followers with the goal of taking down the magical society that she thinks wronged her and her brother- the magic itself is not a problem, but clearly people aren't great at using it responsibly. And whose idea was it to teach a bunch of teenagers how to commit magical war crimes anyway? Get a job or a hobby or something, she's taking away the magic toys until you people know how to use them.

these are what i’ve been watching recently:

1. under the skin - modern cdrama (police procedural), 2 completed seasons with a third to come hopefully - mc is a police sketch artist! the cases are all quite interesting! leans heavy on the bl, if that’s something you want to consider.

2. riverside code at qingming festival - period cdrama, still airing (we’re on ep 20 out of 26) - also heavy on the crime solving. interesting characters!

3. love is a poison - modern jdrama, completed - straight-laced lawyer/extrovert conman-turned-legal-assistant. cute watch! only 12 eps of about 25 min each so you’ll breeze through it

4. when the phone rings - modern kdrama, still airing (ep 8 out of 16) - wife gets kidnapped and steals kidnapper’s phone so she can blackmail her own husband. yeah. they’re both a little Unhinged, i love it.

5. divorce attorney shin - modern kdrama, completed - wholesome courtroom drama, a+++ characters, interesting cases. 12 eps in total so i also flew through this. one of my favourite shows this year!!
