The finals are over, so it's time to announce the winners for the Little Merpoll!

As always, thank you to everyone who participated! If you submitted characters and/or propaganda, if you reblogged the polls, even if you just voted, it was a pleasure having you! I've done fairytales poll before this & hope to continue for a while after this, and it's been a pleasure having you guys along for the ride!

Now, for our 5 winners.

The first winner to announce is the winner of the Mod's Choice poll! The Mod's choice poll is the "least important" of all the polls, as it has the least amount of contestants (this one had the last of any of the previous Mod's Choice polls) and are nominated simply based on which ones I like, but it holds a special place in my heart regardless.

This time, the winner was Sayaka Miki from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, who was also notable for being the runner-up for the Loser's Bracket. While I'm not as big of a fan of Madoka Magica as I used to be, I still love Sayaka, so it was delightful for her to do so well in the Mod's Choice poll & almost win the Loser's Bracket. Congratulations Sayaka and Sayaka fans!

But while Sayaka was the runner-up for the Loser's Bracket, she was not the actual Loser's Bracket winner. That honor goes to Mira from Dimension 20: Neverafter. While I haven't ever listened to Dimension 20, I was pretty about to see her take the win. After one Dimension 20 character won Red Riding Poll, no character from it ranked at all in Cinderpoll or in the main tournament for Little Merpoll, which is why I was glad to see Dimension 20 make a comeback for this Loser's Bracket. Mira's design is pretty cool, too, I love the pirate look. Congratulations for the win!

NOW, onto the MAIN TOURNAMENT WINNERS...

For our two bronze-place winners it's The Little Mermaid from the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale & Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid 1989! To my surprise, it was actually the first time both the original fairytale and the Disney adaptation ranked! Honestly, these are some pretty good ones to rank, too. The original fairytale is a great read (and super short, so if anyone hasn't read it already, you should go do so) being both beautiful and poignantly tragic. Whereas the Disney adaptation holds up surprisingly well and is a beautiful piece of animation. Congratulations to these two bronze-place winners!

For the runner-up of the tournament is Bug from Starship by Team Starkid! I know that Team Starkid is very popular in certain parts of the Internet & the Starship itself did very well, but even then it felt like Bug was an underdog going up against giants like Disney, Studio Ghibli, and the original fairytale the tournament is based on, so I have to congratulate this guy for getting so far regardless! Good job, and I hope your fans are happy for you getting the silver!

I watched this movie for the first time during the course of the tournament and it is truly a breathtaking marvel of animation, one of the best visuals I've ever seen for a movie ever. I will quote the propaganda submitted for Ponyo and say this little ham-loving girl deserved the win simply for the fact that there is no force more powerful than 5-year-old girls!!!

About 1 year ago i made a fanfic of 'the little mermaid' as Madoka Magica. Sayaka was Ariel, Kyousuke was the prince, Madoka was one of the other mermaids, Hitomi was the woman the prince would marry instead **NOT URSULA**, Kyubey is Ursula, and Kyouko would be a pirate doomed to die with Sayaka.

And i was thinking...

...What if i rewrite it? I still love the idea, and Sayaka is my number 1 kin and one of my fav characters ever, so i was thinking that maybe i should give it a revamp!

UGHHHH. OKTAVIA. WHEN I GET YOU MIKI-SAN. episode 9 thoughts. right. - Oktavia's screaming & crying in the first encounter sounding more like her human self, it's still distorted but like. That's Sayaka thrashing and pleading. Then later on during Kyouko's fight against her she lets out a more guttural roaring cry. As if she wasn't already at the point of no return. Sounds like she's screaming underwater. - Refusing to directly attack Kyouko until Homura appears to retrieve Kyouko and her corpse. Using her magic to pelt her with the train wheels for the majority of it at all really. She uses her swords more as a wand (or conductor's baton) than an actual physical weapon. - Kyouko having to avert Madoka's gaze in shame and a shared grief as she carries Sayaka's body btw. All while Homura's explaining the metamorphosis of magical girls to witches. - During the fruitless attempts to sway her grief seed back into a soul gem, Kyouko's link barriers broken twice, Oktavia reaches out and grabs Madoka, forcibly yes but not actually crushing her. Her true best friend since ever. The one she joked about marrying. If not Kyousuke, who else would the little mermaid immediately choose as her suitor? If she wanted to kill Madoka then and there she would have crushed her. Apprehensive. - The result of this action is getting her arm severed (not an uncommon occurance for Sayaka all things considered), busting open the dam to an endless ocean of blood. She really could give it all. - The sheer depth of the concert hall's main room. When Kyouko rips the floor open and all three of them fall, the underside of the labyrinth seems to be a bottomless pit of reversed seats. Drowning. Endless love and endless hatred. - After it all the only named characters besides her friends acknowleding Sayaka's death are Kazuko and Junko who can't even bring themselves to talk about it to anyone else. Distinct lack of Sayaka's family in this and in the whole series tbh.

Doomed by the narrative. Underappreciated by fans. Fucked over by circumstance and her own nature. She's got a sword and has a music motif. Agrees to come back from the dead so that she can see red girl again. She has her own tragic gay ending theme and it's really beautiful (And I'm Home).

Technically its not a sword but she wields a needle in a setting where swords do not exist and she wields it in an exceedingly swordlike fashion so. She counts; Girlboss demigoddess spider lady. She's been protecting an entire kingdom for longer than many of the other characters have been alive. She systematically kills her siblings for being too weak. She's simply the best.

Sayaka

She can magically summon many swords; Becomes a cool witch

Her magical girl-assigned weapon that she uses to combat and slay witches; She's got a knight theme, a little mermaid inspired second (evil!) form and literally 2 of the best musical scores of the whole show IMO. Also, I juat think she's neat

Tragic cutlass wielder. Can summon tons of them. Devastating battle scene where she loses all hope. Pls vote for her she’s so sad.

A magical girl who can summon just. a ridiculous amount of swords.

Shes uses a sword when transformed as a magical girl, and she can summon a bunch of other swords too

She wields a cutlass and while she's not necessarily technically proficient with it, her ability to cut herself off from the sense of pain combined with the strong regenerative magic she was granted as a side-effect of her wish, she has an almost berserker-like fighting style which is dangerous but nevertheless effective; She's super tomboyish but incredibly sweet and self-sacrificing. She'd give up everything for her friends (and, unfortunately, does). Unfortunately this leads to her feeling unappreciated and unrecognized. She deserves everything <3

Madoka Magica Spoilers oopsie

Ok so Sayaka miki’s whole design

A major part of her motivation to be a magical girl is because she views it as if they were heroes in comics. So when she does inevitably become one, that ideal is mimicked in her design.

It still has some traditional magical girl designing, like the heels, short skirt, and frills, but it does tie into the hero idea with her white cape and armor and her weapon being a sword

As for the armor, there are 2 points to it. There isn’t much armor which ties into how unprepared she actually is when it comes to being a magical girl, but it also aids in showing her regenerative abilities.

And we see that more during her fight with Elsa Maria because she lets her body get destroyed and just heals it up.

Going into it even more, her hair clip is based on the design of music notes which is a major part of her entire character (I mean, her witch labyrinth is literally a theater)

Her soul gem is also a crescent moon which ties into the whole ‘hero in secret’ (since they work at night), as well as the timing of her becoming a witch

Speaking of that, it’s sad that every timelins, shs is doomed. Whether she pursues Kyosuke or not, she will come to regret her wish and fall to despair

Going further into her witch design, it’s actually hinted at a bit when Kyoko and Madoka are talking about saving her

It’s like a sorta wind chime we see for a bit of a mermaid and a horse

Sayaka’s witch form is a mermaid in armor. Once again, playing into the ‘hero’ idea, but the mermaid. Ohhh the mermaid.

It both ties into the little mermaid story and classic stories of women with fish tails.

A girl who sacrifices a part of herself for love

And a creature that lures people in to kill them

And that is indeed what happens, when Madoka and Kyoko decide to save Sayaka, Kyoko ends up giving her life so Sayaka wouldn’t die alone. And that loneliness is a part of Sayaka’s character. In her mind, she’s the only proper magical girl. She thinks Homura is cold and selfish and she thinks kyoko is violent and brash and selfish. And Madoka isn’t a magical girl.

Going back to the mermaid and horse scene, that’s Sayaka and Kyoko.

Sayaka is obviously the mermaid, and Kyoko is the horse. And we know Kyoko is the horse because in several things, her witch form is portrayed with horse-like aspects.

As for the design of her witch labyrinth, it fits too. Because music was so important to her. Her wish was for Kyosuke’s hand to heal so she could hear him play the violin again, and we see that reflected in her labyrinth. After all, the entire thing is a giant theater, with minions playing the violin and her on center stage.

Sayaka’s story is tragic but oh so beautiful

It's a clever play on the story where, rather than the littlest becoming human for love and a soul, instead she becomes a mermaid after loosing both, even gaining the bittersweet ending of having a chance at heaven but she still needs to do good after death

i was surprised to learn that sayaka's story is based on the little mermaid, but it makes more sense the more i think about it. such a heartbreaking, tragic tale that i get emotional ocer every time.

A lot of Madoka Magica fans believe she is based off of the original Little Mermaid story cuz, just like the original Little Mermaid, Sayaka loved a boy and said boy did not reciprocate. SPOILERS, she makes a contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl and in return her wish was to help Kyosuke (the guy she likes) who was disabled. Later on when she becomes a witch cuz she felt she wasn't good enough for Kyosuke and doesn't tell him about her feelings, her witch form is a mermaid. I suck at explaining but I hope my propaganda helps 🙏

(Major spoilers for madoka magical)Okay so I will admit her allusion to the little mermaid ain't super obvious, but let me explain, she is based on the original story for the little mermaid, she makes a wish for the sake of a boy she loves basically sacrificing her soul, well he ends up in love with another girl, and as a result she ends up going on a downward spiral and transforms into a monster known as a witch, her witch form is a mermaid.

Even though she's not a mermaid outside her witch form, her story is made to be a direct parallel to the self-sacrificial nature of the little mermaid, even letting herself die. This isn't the end tho because in one of the happier endings of the little mermaid she still becomes sea foam/dies but she also has a chance at becoming a sea spirit and helps others, this is very similar to Sayaka's final fate in the anime where after Madoka rewrites the universe Sayaka still gets corrupted/dies but instead of becoming a witch, she becomes apart of the law of cycles and helps Madoka save other magical girls. There are way to many similarities to her story and the little mermaid for it to just be coincidence imo.

Poor girl is stuck in a craptastic world where horrible monsters kill you, the only way to fight back is to become a zombie child soldier killing what remains of your own kind for survival, the wish you made will inevitably blow up in your face because the person granting it is a jackass, and the writer is hellbent on shitting on the girl power ethos of the magical girl genre by making it so that girls suffer and die for trying to achieve reasonable desires like "not starving to death" and attaining agency in their lives dooms you even harder because of womanly emotions. She needs a win. Also, she is explicitly paralleled with The Little Mermaid--she is a tragic figure who makes a deal to help the boy she loves in exchange for putting her life on a ticking clock, only to be passed up in favor of another girl. As a result, she dies and becomes something else--in this case, Oktavia von Seckendorff, "the mermaid witch."

As a child i did not even realize this was a little merm adaptation, but it really reads. She is sooo strange and other worldly and the movie absolutely captures that dreamlike fairy tale vibe

Ponyo a roughly five-year-old magical goldfish who can transform into a frog-type thing and a human girl. She's the eldest daughter of the literal goddess of the sea and a former human sailor given immortality. She falls in love with the five-year-old boy who cares for her and is thrilled to explore his ordinary yet magical world. She's bouncy, exuberant, and joyful. She loves ham. She doesn't have to give up her voice.

Sayaka then makes a contract with Kyubey and becomes a magical girl to heal the hand of Kyōsuke Kamijo, a boy she has been infatuated with since childhood, so he can play violin again. She believes that her wish is selfless and magical girls should use their magic to help people, causing her to clash with Kyoko over her selfish outlook. As Sayaka's ideals are confronted by the reality of her wish's consequences and the stress of fighting, her view of the world is slowly corrupted. She becomes hateful and distrustful towards others, including Madoka, whom she lashes out at and accuses of being selfish. She then learns that her soul is no longer in her body, but her Soul Gem, causing her to believe she’s a zombie, so she holds off on confessing to Kyōsuke because she feels unworthy of him. Unfortunately, her friend Hitomi then tells Kyōsuke she loves him, causing the two of them to get together. Because of this heartbreak, Sayaka loses faith in her ideals and succumbs to despair, corrupting her Soul Gem into a Grief Seed and turning her into the Witch Oktavia von Seckendorff: “The mermaid witch; it is in her nature to fall in love. Looking for the feeling that moved her so long ago, she moves with the entire concert hall. Her fortune only turns under the weight of memories and no longer moves toward the future. Nothing will reach her any longer. She will come to know nothing more. She simply allows no one to disturb her minions' playing.” Oktavia parallels the Little Mermaid, reflecting how Sayaka gave everything up for her love and destroyed herself when he chose another girl, becoming a monster so powerful that Kyoko has to perform a suicide attack to give her a mercy kill."

they both made a selfless wish, they both would sacrifice themselves to make other people happy-- but they're also at the end of the spectrum of each other

and by that i mean sayaka made a selfless wish with selfish intention-- she wanted to be noticed by kyosuke, to have his love or to be seen as his savior-- which is the reason her fate is sealed from the start, because she's trading her life and practically herself for something she will never be able to gain and i think kyoko really solidified her worries-- because she made the same mistake. her despair comes from the desire to be noticed and acknowledgement and knowing it will never come cause she can't even tell him she's the one who cured his illness and, as much as she tried to deny and gaslit herself into thinking so, that she's doing a good cause by not revealing it, creating a dilemma of wanting to be noticed but has no voice to speak on it. very fitting as her whole story is based on the little mermaid.

while madoka made a selfless wish because she herself is selfless, madoka's final wish was to save all magical girl knowing she'd never be able to see her family again-- and she was contended with it if it means magical girls dont have to suffer anymore, because she already had a fulfilling life and is willing to share that with others, she become a god because despair to her is null-- qhe has no regret knowing what she's doing is for the best, therefore she's strong enough to take all despair from other magical girls as she herself essentially doesn't have her own.
