this au can be set both in 'a ballad of songbirds and snakes' or in the 'hunger games' trilogy.

in both variants, katherine is ~ 18 years old and was born in district 1. her (biological) parents owned a manufacture that worked with mined gemstones to make trinkets. the majority of customers come from the capitol and her parents had a generally favorable relationship with many people from the capitol. her father wanted to buy their family into the capitol, but this failed for many reasons. instead, they managed to bring their then six years old daughter katerina into the capitol by letting her be adopted by a very good customer. the separation from her biological family was highly traumatic for katerina because not only the new surroundings and their new family were totally unfamiliar but she was also not allowed any contact with her biological family. katerina was forced to adapt quickly in order to not stand out and become a target. despite having essentially grown up in the capitol, katerina is aware of her origin, which does make her unease because she is technically still a person from the districts and fears she's viewed as such:
