SFW!!!!! pt.1
Tumblr media
pairing: logan howlett x original female!mutant character
summary: terra, a mutant with the ability to manipulate earthly elements and grow plants/flowers from her palms, finds herself incredibly fed up with logan as they’re forced to to train together.
suggested song: barracuda by heart BASIC IK BUT IT JUST FITS SO WELL
CW: mention of blood, mention of hand to hand combat / fighting using their powers (i’m terrible at writing fight scenes so it won’t be graphic at all), logan is pretty aggressive towards her but dw it’s not gonna be like this for the entire fic it’s just his character arc….
A/N: pretty sure i saw a oneshot w the idea of these powers a while ago so just wanna let u guys know this idea did NOT come from me & i don’t claim to have come up w it :)) also this is part 1 so pls don't hate me for not making them make out straight away...... we need some tension first... HOPE U ENJOY <3
edited a/n: if anyone’s interested in being on a taglist for this fic pls reply/lmk i’d love to figure out how tumblr works and keep u all updated lolllll

terra was never one to fuss over charles’s orders. the girl knew the man was incapable of making bad decisions, especially when it came to the team. but when charles had called both logan and terra into his office, asking the two of them to train as a combat duo, she felt her respect for his wisdom fly out the window.
logan… and her? a combat duo? she found the idea hilarious. her eyes scanned the office, waiting to see if this meeting was some sort of prank. as charles continued on, raving about how if the two could cooperate as a unit it could be greatly beneficial for the team, she had to face the reality of the situation. the professor was serious.
the idea of their gifts working well together caused her a great headache. if anything, their abilities, and personalities, were quite opposite. in what world would logan’s cocky, carefree skillset and her peaceful, nonviolent aura compliment each other?
as much as she wanted to put up a fight with the professor, she’d known there was nothing she could do. when charles had made his mind up, it was an unspoken rule to trust how it played out.
now here she was, a day later, taking a gulp of water unhappily as she waited for logan’s arrival.
the second logan stepped foot into training room, terra could feel the energy shift. his cold, stuck up demeanor practically deteriorated the calm, tranquil atmosphere she’d been building all morning.
"glad you decided to show up!" terra spits, setting the tone for their upcoming weeks of training. it'd been an hour past the time charles had set for them to meet.
this newfound attitude felt out of character to terra. usually, the girl found herself calm and collected, grounded and appreciative of the world around her. it was when she first met logan that she discovered the way it felt to actually hate someone.
terra thinks back to the two's first few encounters. the way he ignored her hand when she politely introduced herself, the way he made passive aggressive comments toward her in group settings, the way he completely ignored her presence in any scenario. a hot, tingly feeling started to fill the pit in her stomach.
logan scoffs to himself, finding her attitude amusing. he pinches the thick cigar resting between his lips, takes one last puff, then puts it out on the wall beside him.
"we'll start with hand to hand combat." is all that logan lets escapes his lips. he wasn't there to chat, he was there for a reason, and he wasn't going to let her waste anymore of his day. “no powers, no tricks, just raw sparring.”
terra shakes her head, returning the same petty scoff he’d given her in response. he was unbelievable.
as the two get into their fighting positions, terra refuses to acknowledge the way logan is quick to peel off his tank top, and she definitely refuses to acknowledge the strange way it left that fiery pit in her stomach lively and bothered.
for a while the two fight, logan’s experience giving him the upper hand. she’d never been the soldier, she was the distraction. making the ground shake or bending the trees around them into different shapes to buy the team some extra time; she was there to confuse the enemy, not hurt them.
eventually, their brawl tends to get more heated and logan can see how it’s affecting her. the girl was tired, her body practically crumbling beneath her, but she refused to give up.
logan sees this as the perfect opportunity to get under her skin.
“come on, that all you got?” he hisses through gritted teeth, poking the bear. terra can’t help but let the vines that had been begging to be freed shoot out of her palms. before he realizes what’s going on, logan can feel the plants slithering up his legs. they make their way to his forearms, then to his neck, curling around him tightly, pushing him away from the girl trapped beneath him.
logan lets out a low chuckle at the girl’s spectacle, the grip of the vines on his neck a feeling he didn't exactly mind. was that really the best she could do?
as terra gives a breathless smirk, thinking she’d done a number on him, logan lets the blades hidden in between his knuckles slide out. without a word, the man is instantly darting toward her... or more specifically the green nuisances growing from her hands.
logan slices the vines straight from where they came from, leaving terra no choice but to fall to the floor in agonizing pain.
he watches as her palms start to gush blood, her eyes widening in shock. bending down on his knee, getting to her level, logan lets his lips slide into a smirk. these next few weeks were going to be fun for him. "you're gonna keep getting yourself into trouble if you don't start paying attention." the man breathes, too careless to yell.
with that, logan turns on his heel, his back facing the injured girl. he thinks about lighting up the rest of his cigar, more hung up on the taste of it lingering in his mouth than the state he's left the oh so peaceful "mother nature" in.

Look After You

🫂——————🫂 The car crawls on the wet asphalt. It’s dark, cold, sprinkling now that the heaviest part of the downfall has subsided. And Nancy isn’t going to take any risks with driving tonight. Not after all she’s survived.
It’s hard to spot what’s ahead of her through the droplet covered windshield. She turns the wipers on—squeak…squeak…squeak. Turns up the heater another notch on the dial when her fingers begin to ache again from the cold. And lowers the volume on the radio—“Barracuda” by Heart begins to dwindle—the crackling through her speakers from a tape Jonathan gave her as a gift. “Fitted with the best tracks I could find that suited you, Nance.”
She has more tapes in the center console. One from Robin, a mash of Madonna and The Beatles that she suspects came from lingering Vecna anxiety. A short and sweet mix from Eddie—Dio becoming a new favorite band, surprisingly. And an old, tired tape from ’83, crafted specifically for her by Steve. She remembers the effort he put into it. How he nervously gave it to her, how his hands shook, his smile fond and lightly embarrassed. There were songs on it that he liked, noticeably Queen and Springsteen; but there was Bowie and Blondie, too—for her, genuinely just her. All in all, the center console is a good representation of love she’s had over the years—new friends and old. The only tape not in the car being one from Barb, dusty and lingering in a box of trinkets shoved far and deep into her bottom dresser drawer.
Barb is still honored among her things. Some of her clothes. There’s a pair of lenses she left, that Nancy has since fitted for her own reading glasses—ones that she wears when marking in loopy cursive in the same type of journal she always saw Barb writing in. It’s the principal of moving on, she thinks. Not quite leaving all of Barb behind, but honoring her in the small ways that matter—and in that, it’s forming new friendships while repairing ones formerly broken. To be loved; to be remembered; to be taken care of, even if it’s just music in her car.
Even if it’s pulling slow to the next red light and in the corner of her eye, on the left in the steadying rain, she spots a figure on the sidewalk. Hunched in, carrying a heavy sack on their back, hair floppy into their face—a battered face. And if they didn’t cross under a streetlamp, she probably wouldn’t have recognized them. But it’s the blue Adidas on their feet that she notes. With a crank, then two, and another that threatens to jam her window into the car door—
“Steve?!” She calls out. The figure stops. Startles frantically. Whips their head around, eyes darting, mouth frowning. And then they look at her. His eyes wild and scared and hazy. Her stomach drops low. “Hey! Where’s your car?!”
The rain pelts down. Heavy and heavier as she idles at the stoplight, now green. His hands are nervous in front of him, smushing palms together, fingers tangling with one another. Then, he just shrugs. But his face does something…complicated. It twitches like he’s thinking. It frowns like he knows she won’t like the answer. And so he settles for absence, like she’d ever think he’s actually stupid.
“Why don’t you get in mine, Steve?!” she shouts over the heavy rain, “I can take you where you need to go! You’re gonna get sick and we know how Robs is going to react to that!”
It’s the mention of Robin that makes him move. Slow and hesitant, hefting the straps of his backpack on his shoulders. Sluggish in a way that worries her—a reminder of concussions, of blood soaked shirt scraps, and the inevitable infection that had come in the aftermath. She thinks he looks—not exactly cowardly, but something so timid that it’s child-like. Small and shaky.
The passenger door opens with a soft click. And he climbs in, shoe making a gentle squish to the floor of the car, and the subtle squeak of his drenched clothes on the leather seat. His sack goes to the footwell, overflowing and tight against the glovebox, probably heavy on the tops of his feet. He shuts the door with his right hand, but she catches a glimpse of his left where it rests on his thighs. The contours of his knuckles are shadowed with blood, dried in the creases of his skin. There’s a jagged scratch to the edge of his palm that she wonders at, if it reaches down to the underside of his hand, where it ends, if it’s still bleeding. He scrunches his fingers minutely, but quickly straightens them again, as if it hurts to move them. And she’s sure it does. She’s very sure it does.
She looks back out the windshield when he settles into the seat. The light turns yellow, then red. Green light just missed, so she’ll stall. Fiddles with the knobs on her dashboard—cranks the heat high, turns the radio completely down. Shifts the air vents on her car so that they all point at him, rather than her. And soothes at the way he closes his eyes, soaking up the heat on his obviously cold skin—goosebump riddled and lips slightly blue. Wipers forced to their max capacity, fast and squeaking.
“So…where are you heading, Steve?” And she looks back, not head-on. Tilts her head, looks sideways and almost down her nose at him.
He shrugs, eyes still closed. Even though they’re hidden from her, she can tell he’s forlorn. Tight wrinkles between his brows. A frown still sitting stubborn. “I don’t know,” he breathes.
Nancy nods. Taps her fingers on the steering wheel. “Can I ask about…about the face?” she wonders quietly.
The way his jaw tightens, she thinks there won’t be an answer. His throat works, muscles strained, veins protruding, Adam’s apple tired. But then, his lower lip wobbles and his eyes peel open half-lidded, and he’s looking out the passenger window. Even through the rain on the glass, she can see the tears he must’ve been trying to recede. Fast and plenty, some tinted pink from the bit of blood still caked around his eye, the others crystal clear and showcasing the rapid flush of his ruddying cheeks. “Not yet,” he whispers, “can we just drive for a little bit?”
Instead of pushing, like she wants to do, she just looks at the road—light finally green—and goes under the speed limit. Empty streets, still slick asphalt, she’ll oblige. “Anywhere in mind or do you want to just go sightseeing?”
He snorts wet and snotty. “You still have that constellation book in your center console?”
“Hey,” she scolds, mock-offended, “I told you that in confidence!”
His head thunks against the side of the door, hair rustling as he looks to her. She feels his eyes on him, but won’t look over again just yet. “There’s no one else around,” he murmurs, “and besides, I was kidding. I don’t know where I wanna go.” Steve sighs heavily. “Don’t know if my face is very welcoming right now anyway.”
She clicks her tongue. “Yeah,” she reluctantly agrees, “think the…the blood and stuff would put people off.” Her hands tighten on the steering wheel. Hesitantly, she broaches the next subject, “Taking walks at night with what seems like a load of hiking gear. Did you take on a new exercise plan or something?”
“Nope,” he answers quietly—he’s been weirdly quiet the whole time—“just seeing where my feet would take me, I guess. Out of town or…wherever.”
“Out of town,” she repeats slowly. “And your car wasn’t good for that?”
He shrugs. “Dad told me I couldn’t have it, since he tossed me out. Not like I can do anything about that, it’s in his name.” Then, at that, he inhales sharply through his nose, eyes wide—wider than she’s ever seen them. Catching up all at once to what he said. “I didn’t—You didn’t hear—Forget that I”—
“Did he do that to you?” She asks, teeth gritted. Chest tight.
“My dad? My dad’s an asshole.” She remembers all the times he’d say that. Brushing over the shit he’d been thrown. Trying to convince her to not meet his parents.
He doesn’t answer now.
“Steve, if he did this, you can press charges. You can…We can tell Hop”—
“And get everyone else involved? No thanks.”
Reluctantly, Nancy finds a spot on the curb that’s completely empty, and pulls over to it. He begins to reach down into the footwell, scrambling for his bag, panicked in all his gestures. She stops him with a soft hand on his forearm. He freezes, but doesn’t look over.
“Steve,” she whispers, “what were you going to do tonight? Where were you going to go? If…if your dad is after you or something, we can stow you in my basement, I can—I’ll get Jonathan to remove the stick in his ass for a night so you can”—
“I was going to skip town, okay?” He forces himself to speak, mangled and garbled as it is. “See if I could find a passing car outside of the limits, hitch a ride, maybe end up somewhere else. That’s what I was going to do. I don’t wanna…nobody else needs to know about all of this. I don’t want anybody else to get involved. This is between my dad and I, alright?” Finally, he looks up from the footwell. Still hunched over. Hands still shaking and gripping to the backpack straps. Tears streaming down his face again.
She makes a decision, stubborn as he is, and turns on the overhead light.
In the sickly yellow glow of the car’s light, she can see all the damage done to him. There’s a cut on his right cheekbone most likely formed from a wedding ring. Dark, plum bruising around his left eye. Swollen face, blood caked around his nostrils—hopefully not broken. A cut on his lip. Another cut on his hairline. There’s bruising on his neck, in the shape of fingertips. And when she looks down his arm, past the curled edge of his t-shirt sleeve, there’s bruising there, too.
“I should shoot your dad in the fucking face,” she finally says. “Why’d he do this to you? If anything, you’ve been out of his hair for years now. He has no reason to go after you. No fucking reason at”—
“It’s because I’m a queer, Nance,” Steve spits. Not venomous, something humiliated and heated. “Okay? I’m a fucking queer. I’m dating—Eddie and I are dating. Wayne should’ve been the only one to know, but somehow my dad found out. Went snooping in my room or…or maybe one of my neighbors saw Eddie leaving my house looking a little more rumpled than he arrived. But that doesn’t matter. All that matters is that I’m a queer and my dad doesn’t like that.
“And if you’ll excuse me, I think I should get back on the road and get the fuck out of here before my dad can come cruising around, find me, and do me in worse than Vecna could’ve ever.” He rips his arm out from under Nancy’s palm. Struggles with hefting the backpack onto his lap. And reaches for the door handle.
Yet, he still stops himself when Nancy pulls him back in. Forces him back into his seat. Keeps sat and still.
He looks back to her, understandably upset.
She takes pause. Looks back and forth at his wet eyes—one half-shut, forced by the swelling of his face. Her hands are on his biceps, sat where those bruises are, and all she does is stroke her palms up and down. Soothing. “That’s okay, Steve,” she murmurs, “I don’t care that you’re queer. That you’re gay or—or something else. I care that you’re safe.”
“I’m not safe here in town,” he retorts, voice shaking.
Her hands move to his forearms. Where his skin is still cold. “You don’t even have a jacket on. You don’t…you don’t know who’s going to pick you up. What that person could be like. I can’t just let you step out of my car and walk back down the road.” In front of her, he begins to crumble all over again. Realizing, all too fast and all too much, that she’s unfortunately right. “Can I take you somewhere else? Maybe to Eddie’s? If you don’t want to explain all of this again to somebody like Hopper or my dad or even Robin, then at least talk it though with somebody who’d fully understand the severity.
“I can clean you up with my first aid kit. But I’m not letting you walk out of everybody’s lives. Even if I know you aren’t, you have no guarantee the next time you’d be able to reassure the people who care about you.” She squeezes his arms. Lightly, so gentle it could’ve been nothing. And when his tears come fast again, she holds his face between her palms. At least his face is warm, she thinks, and at least he isn’t fighting me.
Steve sniffles. Doesn’t and won’t make direct eye contact with Nancy. Forlorn, again, to the tip of his nose. “You won’t tell anybody else?” He asks, small, timidly.
“No,” she merely whispers, “it’s not my business. And I shouldn’t have forced it out of you. For that, I’m sorry. I just…I’ve seen you too close to death too many times. I’m not letting it get you because you think you’d be better off with strangers, with people who don’t care about you the way we do.” She strokes her thumb at a spot of crusted blood on his right cheek. Where it had burbled out of the cut. “If I hadn’t found you, would you have ever told anybody where you went? Would you have told Robin? Eddie?”
He sighs through his nose. Closes his eyes again. Swallows hard and shakes his head softly. “I don’t have enough cash for a payphone, so I guess I wouldn’t.”
“Right,” Nancy murmurs, “let me clean you up, okay? I’ll take you home, to Eddie’s. And maybe…one of these days, y’know, we can figure out a plan. A pact. Get all of us out of this shithole.”
“Shithole,” Steve echoes. Snorts. “Never heard you say that before.”
She grins, even though he can’t see it. “Blame Mike for that one. He’s uh…he’s creative, that’s all I’ll say.”
The clean up doesn’t take long. Some rubbing alcohol on fast food napkins. A tube of Neosporin. Band-aids. All done in relevant silence. With his head still in her hands, his throat working over and over as he can’t pinch his nose to prevent more tears. His hands slowly warmed in her grip as she wraps a bandage over the nasty cut on his palm. Where that particular injury came from, she doesn’t know, but knows better than to ask.
And in the drive over, they make the same small talk. About plans for college—for Emerson. Of Family Video, customers, minimum wage. She jokes that Eddie’s got her hair. And he just laughs, full from his belly and gravelly the way it always had been—even tells her that Eddie made a comment along the same lines.
When he disappears inside of the Munson’s trailer, she feels relieved, not satiated, but soothed. And when Eddie comes out, pajamas and all, wraps his lanky arms around her torso, pulls her in fast and hard, drops a kiss to her head of curls—she knows that Steve is in good hands.
“Wheeler, you’re a fucking hero,” Eddie remarks.
“I wasn’t just going to let him be miserable.”
“Seriously, Nancy, you’re my fucking hero. I don’t know where he’d be without you.”
Somewhere else, she thinks, somewhere else without us. Bruised and scared and small.
“Don’t think about it,” she says, “get him better though, please.”
“Will do, Nance. Get home safe?” Eddie breathes, arms still tucked around her body securely. He’s scared, she can tell, but half-relieved all the same.
“I always do.”

Hey I got a question barracuda how did you and you know who meet each other anyway?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I never wanted to harm anyone, and you think they would know that... But no.
As there were shapes who let me be, certain shapes hated me."
Tumblr media
"They were insesant, pestering me for hours until they forced me out to fight..."
"... Y-you didn't-"
"No... No, I never harmed them either... Even if I could, and wanted to, the most I'd do was hiss at them until I pushed them back.
... I didn't get the same luxury as staying unharmed.
That day, was one of those where they got to land a nasty blow on me, mocking me as they did."
Tumblr media
"Something, or someone had got to them first, and it wasn't until I heard the screams that I knew I was too late to help any of them...
I did NOT want to... But no one deserved such a painful fate as what I heard.
The sound of bones crushing, flesh being torn and skin ripping was enough to get me on edge."
Tumblr media
"It reeked of blood... But it was motionless.
Until it started to move, seemingly drinking the water.
At that point I was so stressed I couldn't bear to just sit there and risk getting found out and killed, yet I was determined to not die today, not after what had happened.
"I am strong" I thought, "I can handle whatever comes my way"... And still, I couldn't help but feel nervous..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Oh... Oh- But- She didn't..-"
"No, she never hurt me... That much- She hissed, and nipped at me a couple of times, but it was because she thought I wanted to hurt her.
I never did, and to prove that I pushed myself as far as I could on the pond to let her have some room to cool down... It was then when I noticed she was hurt too.
She had two arrows piercing her side, a deep, dark blood dripping down from them.
Realizing at that moment that if I didn't get them out in time, she could die...
But she still didn't want me close. She would swipe and hiss whenever I tried to touch her, distressed by the situation.
... I couldn't stand to see her like that... So I started to talk to her, trying to get her to calm down and relax."
Tumblr media
"I patched her up, and she seemed calmer... More so than before.
I think she knew I wanted to help, because she also started to talk to me. Her voice was gutural and rough at the start, but it progressed into a soft and calm one as we got to know eachother better.
She told me her name, and in return, patched some of my wounds as well.
The more we talked, the more she felt comfortable with me, and the more we got to know eachother better... It was then that I realized, and she told me...
She was a Forestfolk."
"F-forestfolk!? Like... The ones in the legends??"
"Yes! You can imagine my face when she confirmed my suspicions... Heh...
Seeing one of them, so close, it was unheard of... Yet, knowing how violent stories about them tended to end, I was also a little bit afarid.
But we still continued to talk to eachother, and the more we did, the more I felt calm with her as well. She seemed like she was on the same page as I to not hurt anyone, at least for now. As she did scare the previous shapes from before off because they were bothering her too.
As the night rolled in however, she had to take her leave, and she retreated back into the cold, leafy tundra of the forest...
I am not ashamed to admit, it was sad back then, as it is now."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"But I think that day we made peace with eachother.
And she came here to stay, forever."

Find the Word/Manuscript Search Tag
Me coming in a month late to the tag game with Starbucks--
So I was tagged twice in the same tag game recently and figured I'd just knock them both out in one fell swoop. I pulled from a few different sources, including WIPs, warm-ups, and fridged work, so there's a little bit more variety considering I haven't published a ton. What I was given was:
@ghostoffuturespast's words: soft, neon, blood, & haze.
@glitchinginthegarden's words: collapse, follow, gentle, & lounge
Tagging @ghostoffuturespast @glitchinginthegarden @fly-amanitaa @callmeguacamole @beammeupbroadway @clusterfxckedbysirens @merge-conflict @ladykatie512 @seraphfighter and anyone else who'd like to give it a shot! Try out retort, sun, length, and knuckle
Soft
Silverhand doesn't respond immediately, but he does straighten up and crushes his cigarette on the end of the table (V doesn't miss the moment of hesitation as his hand hovers right over Rogue's own stub, but she doesn't comment on it). "About time," the attempt at lightheartedness is awfully forced and they both know it. "Felt pretty bad there, thinkin' you were gonna spend the rest of your life—" "Don't, don't," V pleads with a soft shake of her head. "You don't have to do that." "Do what?" "Pretend like you care."
Rain in the Desert, Chapter 5
Neon
The oil fields are unique in one regard. Night City goes out of its way to mask its malice, washing it out in neons or hiding it beneath the high rises. But this place won’t do that to you. It’s haunted, hateful, and brutally, utterly honest about it. These fields offer you a cautionary tale. Stories of what the world could’ve been: what the world has become instead. Harsh, horrible little truths. Because why lie about it? Who’s around to heed it, anyway? Humans don’t want ghost stories anymore. When one crops up, they’re happy to stick it all the way out here, where it’s easy to drown out the things they’re trying to tell you. There’s a reason V only watched those oil wells spit their little flames from so far away. The further you are from a truth, the easier it becomes to spin it into something else.
Fridged lines from Rain in the Desert, Chapter 16
Blood
He goes through the songs he knows like they’re the stages of grief. Denial comes first. Loud and sharp and distracting— whatever drowns out his thoughts the best. Some “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, a little “Thunderstruck”, most of “Strutter”, whatever rifts of “Second Conflict” Johnny remembers from hearing it on the radio. Anger comes like it usually does: aggressively, overpoweringly, unconsciously. Soon, he’s played “War Pigs” in its entirety and slams his way through “The Chain”, “Ramble On”, and “Barracuda” without even thinking about it. Bargaining’s harder to place until Johnny finds himself strumming those cliched breakup songs he used to put on when he felt pissy about an ex-output of his. Those ones that had some bitterness and drive in them, because what was he back then, if not driven and bitter? “Mary-Jane’s Last Dance”, “I Hate Myself For Loving You”, “Cold as Ice”, “You Give Love a Bad Name”. He plays them until the tempo he’s shouldering slows and the chords he’s playing lengthen, and whatever fire Johnny’d been drawing on has smoldered down into nothingness. His hands naturally find “Landslide” first, and before long, he’s gone through slow, depressing tune after slow, depressing tune: “Taxi”, then “Fire and Rain”, then “Vienna”. On and on and on. Acceptance doesn’t come. Johnny waits, plays, waits some more, plays some more, but all he can play are the sad songs, and they pile, and pile. “Desperado”. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. “Patience”. “Blackbird”. “Southern Cross”. “Dust in the Wind”. How does he know so many sad songs? Why were rockstars always so fucking sad all the time? Play something else! Anything else! He finally forces himself to quit after finishing the slowest, most pathetic version of “Going to California” he’s ever heard. When he’s done, V’s bloodied fingers fall to his lap, and he stares at the shuttered window until it occurs to him that it’s well past midnight.
In Media Res (Here, Besides the Rising Tide) (WIP)
Haze
Suddenly, V finds her body won't quite respond to her urgent thoughts. Staring into the depths of the sea, she feels every last bit of panic, horror, and dread collide in her head at once, leaving her rooted to the spot in a fear-induced haze. She might've damn well stood there like the biggest idiot alive and gave her ghost up to a fucking yacht explosion of all things if Johnny's disembodied voice hadn't yanked her back to reality, "Ground control to Major-fucking-V! You gonna stare into the water all night like you're fuckin' Narcissus, or you wanna get your ass in gear and bail 'fore the Maritime Demolitron blows you to kingdom come!?"
The Last Lost Continent
Collapse
"You're—" an astonished V stops just short of saying 'fucking with me' because she knows he's not, "Alright, what's the catch?" Silverhand removes his aviators and spins them by the temple, "I don't deal in catches, V. I think I've been pretty clear in what I want." Again, fair. "As I said, I like this 'bout as much as I like your driving, but if this is how you want to play it, then whatever." There it is again. That exact same look she saw down in the Afterlife. It's only for another split-second but V'd know it anywhere. The slight crease in his brow, the brief collapse of his furious expression, the faintest prick of some bottled-up emotion leaking through the cracks of this veneer: one he's worn for so long that he's forgotten how to take it off or is too scared to try. Silverhand closes his eyes for a beat longer than normal and just like that, it's gone. In that moment, a combination of optimism and cold-hard reality smacks V upside the head. She's cutting deals with her brain parasite. Because that's what he is. A brain parasite. Either things have gotten very dire very fast, Silverhand's psyche's done irreparable damage to her own sense of judgement— —or maybe he's raised some fair points concerning trust. How it's far easier to focus on saving your own ass when you don't have to worry about someone else stabbing you in it. Almost sounds like something her mother might've said once.
Rain in the Desert, Chapter 6
Follow
When we wrote the code, we didn’t make life; we made a mirror and we held it up. Everything that followed was born of the image glimpsed within it. Humans spend their entire lives trying to solve themselves. Code keeps succeeding, then starts looking to solve something else. Of course it does. We made it that way, after all. It was never given the chance to be anything else. What is the Net but an endless reflection of ourselves?
Rain in the Desert, Chapter 18 (WIP)
Gentle
The pair of them share that moment in a way only doomed people truly can— like it's the last gasp of air before a drowning man is sucked beneath pitch-black waters. "Hey kid? "Yeah, rockerboy?" "When this is all over, mind doin' me one thing?" "Hm?" "Get outta this fuckin' city," Johnny murmurs. "Just get on your bike and don't look back." The earnestness of the request hits her first, then the weight of it. All V can give him is a gentle shake of her head, her gaze falling towards the glittering skyline, "You know I can't do that." "Be able to do anythin' you damn well want once we're split. Who's gonna stop ya?" "No one," she admits, "and that's exactly why I can't go."
Rain in the Desert, Chapter 16
Lounge
She tried so goddamn hard to find a reason to pass on Kenner's offer, but everywhere V turned for an excuse, she only found a justification. Could've claimed she didn't like the fixer or just straight-up didn't want to work with someone who'd take a cut of her scratch, but Kenner had gone to her directly and promised her every last enny, no middleman. She couldn't say the job was dangerous, because it was as easy as breaking into an office building and stealing the files after hours. For fuck's sake, the video in question was of Kenner and a client taking turns ripping lines of Glitter off a stripper's bare ass in a 7th Hell VIP lounge— V's seen worse things in the back alley behind her megabuilding and Johnny'd done worse things with twice the posturing, half the money, and a quarter of the shame. There comes a time in every young edgerunner's life where the needs of the wallet outweigh all. And alas, V can preach about her values until she's blue in the face and the room has lost all its occupants, but it won't mean jack-diddly-squat in the end. Twenty thousand eddies is still twenty thousand eddies no matter whose pockets it's coming out of.

thinking about barracuda/fresh things again lol-
barracuda is not going to admit that they're attracted to him but everyone prolly knows that they have feeling for him if they've been around them enough lol. moronsexual snake. Fresh is a bit oblivious, and a idiot when it comes to certain things but also genuinely likes barracuda, plus is prolly v physically affectionate
(cuda being cold blooded and fresh being v warm prolly dosent help too much, cuda just instinctually wraps themself around him if they can)

So…what about a deep sea mermaid with a sunlight zone mermaid darling?
tw - kidnapping, imprisonment, mentions of death/injury, forced dependence, slight predatory/prey dynamics.
So,,, you know that principle in marine biology where the deeper you go, the more fucked-up the fish get? Yeah. I think about that a lot.
Your kind was made for the shallows, given soft scales that grow back quickly and colorful fins that shine in the filtered sunlight, allowed to prioritize speed and flexibility over camouflage and self-preservation. You live in communities with thousands of others of your species, share food and tools and resources, and when the sun falls low and you're forced to retreat to your sand beds and coral reefs, you can tell each other stories about what lurks below, recite old myths about gnarled claws and pointed fangs and eyes as black as basalt and spread new rumors about the things that make their homes in whale graveyards and cook their food on hydrothermal vents. You're warned, time and time again, to stay away from the trenches, to stop where the water grows cold and the light fails to penetrate. You've been told about the monsters, about the creatures far more gruesome and far more deadly than any passing shark or grinning barracuda, and you know what they'd do to you, how quickly their teeth would tear through your flesh, how easily they'd tear you apart. You're aware of everything you should be afraid of, but fear breeds fixation, and fixation breeds curiosity. There's only so much you can do to keep yourself away, after that.
In your own defense, you don't go very far. You choose a trench barely a mile away from your reef, and you bring supplies, a dagger carved out of bone and coral, enough food to last for the better half of a week, just in case you lose your way. You don't mean to go very far, but it's so hard to tell how much time you've wasted when you can't track the sun, it's so difficult to tell how deep you've gotten until you can't see your hand in front of your face and it's impossible to tell which way is up. When you see them, only made visibly by the glowing stripes painted along their arms, their chest, their tail, you react on instinct, assume their one of yours, call out, beg for their help, and you don't realize your mistake until they're right in front of you, until you can see dull light glinting on their curved teeth, the silhouette of long, sharpened talons, their eyes - nothing but ink, nothing but blackness, as dark and as endless as the part of the sea they call home. You think they're going to kill you, at first, rip you apart, eat you alive, and you do try to struggle as they drag you deeper, as the water goes from cold to freezing, as they hold you to their chest and dig their nails into your skin and the pressure pushes down on you until you can feel your blood pulsing in your veins, until you just can't keep your eyes open for a second longer.
You're in a cave, when you wake up, surrounded by rusting trinkets and current-smoothed stones, dented bones and plants that glow like stars. They treat you gently, only ever touching you like you're something delicate, something fragile, and they do their best to provide, letting you have your fill of the mutilated prey they bring home, gifting you bits of shining ore and colorful shell. You've tried to escape, before, but it's impossible to navigate the lightless tunnels that surround their nesting site without eyes as terrible as theirs, and even if you could manage that, you wouldn't know how to get home, how to tell one direction from another, how to navigate pure void. You wouldn't be able to hunt, or forage, or survive on your own, not for very long, not well enough to avoid all the monsters you should've been just a little more afraid of. All you can do is stay in their nest, accept what they give you, try to pretend you're receptive to the gentle touches they seem so fond of. All you can do is smile, touch them in return, smile and play grateful and let them believe you're as helpless as they seem to think you are.
All you can do is hope they see you as a mate, rather than a meal, and pray that they'll never change their mind.

Hot Date, Cold War Excerpt
Hello everyone, please enjoy an excerpt of my self indulgent HxH AU, Hot Date, Cold War.
The basic premise is Ging and Pariston are directors of rival spy agencies, Morel works for Ging as Barracuda, Knov works for Pariston as Jackdaw under...duress. Severe duress.
Also they have to somehow cooperate to save the world.
"Now Ging," Pariston said as he gently grabbed the man's wrist and lowered the knife at his throat. "That's no way to greet an old friend."
"You're not my friend," Ging said as he stepped back. "And you broke into my room."
A clink and clatter of dangling metal like the world's most gaudy and obnoxious bracelet greeted Ging.
"Hardly breaking in if I have a key." Pariston produced a bottle of champagne, glistening with condensation, dripping onto the plush baby blue carpet. Two glasses appeared in his hand as if by magic. "Drink?"
Ging rolled his eyes. "Only if I can pour. No, scratch that. You tampered with the glasses, knowing I would suspect the drink itself. So no thank you, Director Hill."
Pariston pushed out his lip in a fake pout. "But we have so much to celebrate! Two rival agencies teaming up to save the one person who holds the key to world cooperation–or perhaps domination…"
Just as I suspected. "Mmm…about that." Ging took the glass Pariston offered him but made no move to drink it. He held it up to the light and examined it. "I may have…told my agent to capture yours."
"Oh! Great minds do think alike!" Pariston beamed, and Ging buried all comparisons to the sun in the recesses of his brain. "I told my agent to capture yours and bring them to me. Here."
The noise of conflict drifted faintly down the hall at first, increasing in volume until it became a cacophony right outside the door…
And knocked the door down, along with the frame and surrounding drywall.
Two men tumbled through the splinters and plaster dust, into the living area where Ging and Pariston sat. Ging moved to intervene, but Pariston held up a hand.
Let's see how they fare against one another, seemed to be the unspoken message.
That must be Jackdaw, Ging thought when he saw the slight, well-dressed agent trying to put a knife through Ging's own agent, Barracuda.
Doesn't look like a field agent. Looks like he should be in an office somewhere stealing files. Or playing some diplomat's favorite pretty boy.
Barracuda put Jackdaw in a chokehold and received a broken nose for his trouble.
Perhaps he is field agent material after all. They might just kill each other if we let this charade go on much longer. "Barracuda. Don't kill your new partner. I told you to bring him in alive for a reason."
Both of them stopped and looked at their handlers.
"What did he say?" Jackdaw asked in Russanian.
"Playing dumb doesn't suit you, dear. You know exactly what he said," Pariston responded.
Jackdaw slipped out of the chokehold and gave his assailant turned partner a scathing look. "Of course, but what does he mean? Is Director Freecs not the master of our rival agency?"
"There's been an incident," Ging said as he looked in the glass, now filled with plaster and splinters, and set it aside. "Director Hill and I have agreed to work together to resolve the matter, and put two of our best agents on the case."
"Boss, you can't expect me to team up with some prissy, college-educated asshole," Barracuda said as he moved his broken nose back into place. Blood dribbled down the front of his gray shirt. "Fuck."
"I can and I do," Ging said. "The world's depending on it."
"Sir," Jackdaw said in an urgent whisper. "You cannot expect me to work with that...that...brute! He looks like a street thug!"
"But you will, or would you rather go to prison for…oh, remind me how long it was again?"
Jackdaw adjusted his glasses and picked splinters out of his coat. A futile effort. "The rest of my natural life?"
"Exactly!" Pariston said with a grin that didn't reach his eyes. "Don't be so glum. Just see this mission as an opportunity! I most certainly do!"

(This is all for fun and is just my opinion! My evidence isn’t super conclusive but this is more for entertainment purposes haha)
It’s time to talk about Gill Grunt.
When I first thought about this, I figured it was simple enough. He’s a fish, right?
Well, upon looking a little deeper, I decided this has to be investigated. In theory, there are three categories he could possibly be in;
- Reptile
- Fish
- Amphibian
So, let’s look at a few characteristics of each of these.
Reptile:
- Harsh scales/rough scales
- Cold blooded
- No “normal” eyelids
- Claws & “paws”
- Eyes on the sides of their head
- Slitted eyes/fully dialated
- Certain species of lizard live most of their lives in the water
- Can Iive in fresh water or salt water
- Can have things that look like dorsal fins
- Can have webbed hands
Fish:
- Smooth scales
- Eyes are far apart (most, except for those fish that have both eyes on the same side)
- Have fins
- Built to be water dynamic
- Can live in fresh water and salt water
Amphibian
- Don’t have scales
- Usually rounder
- Make weird sounds??
- Eggs laid in water but they live most of their life on land
- Typically live in warm environments
- Don’t have teeth
- Don’t live in salt water
Now, let’s look at Gill Grunt:
Tumblr media
Examples of all things we could compare to Gill Grunt (one from each type):
Reptile: Marine Iguana
Tumblr media
Fish: Barracuda
Tumblr media
Amphibian: Chinese giant salamander
Tumblr media
Now that we have a few things to compare from, let’s talk about what we know.
Gill Grunt has fins, and doesn’t appear to have scales on most of his body? (He does on his sleeve but that might be a shirt design.) He lived most of his life out of water, but we know he lived in a saltwater city as a child, according to his wiki. (I’m trusting the wiki on this one haha, I don’t have the money to check.)
His scales are larger than those of a normal fish.
He has fins, yellow eyes, and teeth.
His nostrils look like iguana nostrils.
Okay, so first of all, we can cross off amphibian because he lived in a salt water city for his entire childhood.
So now we’ve got reptile and fish. Considering he’s lived on land for most his life, we can assume he’s probably not a fish.
Mangrove rivulus can survive on land the longest of any fish, but that’s only about 66 days. Gill Grunt has been on land for a lot longer than that, and a lot of his species live almost exclusively on land in villages near rivers.
So, my conclusion?
Gill Grunt is a lizard.
(Or he’s just a highly evolved fish but let me have my moment)
((ALSO YOU CANT SAY HE’S A FISH BC HE HAS GILLS UNLESS YOU CAN FIND A PICTURE OF HIS GILLS. GILL GRUNT DOESN’T HAVE GILLS CONFIRMED.))

The submersion | Intrulogical Mermaid AU
Future intrulogical.
Follow up on this animatic. | AO3
Words: 1728.
Summary: Remus has fun in his submarine. A giant barracuda disagrees.
CW: Dark humour, skeletal remains of a rat, drowning, deep ocean (if there's anything else do tell), death, sexual innuendo.
The submersion
It was cloudy.
And cold.
But that was to be expected when one’s in the middle of the Atlantic.
“Remus Prince, you dunce, how are you dressed like that?”
Remus turned around to see Ella Da Villa, the captain of the ship he was on, and an old friend. Her short afro was stuffed inside of a beanie, she held onto her sides through her huge puffer coat.
“I know you’d just rather I take it all off, but, honey, I need to at least wear something”.
She laughed.
“What you need is to make sure you don’t get drenched or--”
“First of all, I look amazing all wet. But if that’s what you’re so worried about, hey, I took care of that” he answered pointing at his green rain boots.
The crew looked at them in amusement as they moved the equipment, preparing everything for the submersion.
Ella took off one of her gloves and smacked Remus’ head with it.
“Ow! I thought you were against violence!”
“I never said that. But I am against animal abuse, that’s why I didn’t hit you hard. Now go and put on a coat, you dumbass”.
“Sure thing mommy, you know how to be commanding” he winked.
“It’s captain for you, now go!”
His boots squeaked against the flooring of the deck as he ran to get into the guts of the ship. He managed to hear Ella swearing under her breath.
“How did he even graduate? Going out in short sleeves…”
Ella was a funny one, Remus thought. It was easy to get under her skin, she also liked to play along which made it even better.
One of the people going up the metal stairs almost tripped against him, there wasn’t that much room, after all. Remus jumped over the railing and fell onto the lower level without a scratch.
“Oh my god! Are you okay?!” said someone.
A younger guy with spectacular hair held onto his forearm to check on him. Oh, this was the newbie.
“Don’t worry, I don’t have any lungs”.
“Wha…” he looked half perplexed and half horrified.
“You know, we all get it done since we’re going to end up sleeping with the fish anyway”.
He stood up quickly and mutely apologised. Remus enjoyed the view of his ass going upstairs as fast as possible. New meat was always hilarious.
When he entered the room his cupboard was already open. He liked to leave the sliding doors that way so he could see what was inside, otherwise, he’d forget about it. In a ship, that meant ending up with all of one’s clothes on the floor, but as long as Remus could see where they were he wouldn’t misplace anything. Object permanence was a bitch.
Messy floors did have an advantage, the coat on top of the pile was good enough to satisfy Ella and easy enough to grab quickly.
The backswing of the glove against his shoulder caught him off-guard.
“Ow! What did I do now?! This coat is fine!”
“The coat is fine, yes, but the new guy is shaking like a leaf. What did you tell him? He keeps saying stuff about drowning”.
“Hey, I’d never mention drowning when I’m about to get into a submarine”.
“Yes, that’d be very poor taste, sadly, you have it worse so you must have said something terrible. I expect you to fix this, or we’ll have to arrange you drowning”.
“You know I love choking on wet things”.
“Then your last moments will be pleasant. Consider me the best friend one could have”.
The new guy was holding onto the railing of the ship, staring at the water in concentration. Probably about to throw up or something.
“Hey!”
“Ah!” he screamed.
“Do you have a name?”
“Uh… yes… um…”
“Great! I have one too, it’s Remus” he introduced himself with half a bow.
“I’m Nathan… sorry… I’m just anxious… it’s the first time I go on one of those” he gestured at the submersible held by the crane of the ship.
“First times are always awkward, don’t worry.
Finally, Nathan let out a laugh, it was a nervous one but it would suffice.
“You know what I said earlier was a joke, right?”
“Oh, yeah, it just caught me by surprise. You’re the head biologist here, right?”
“Yup. Guess you could say I’m the dom of this study”.
“Darn it, here I was expecting to be more active”.
Remus smiled in surprise. It was always nice when people had similar humour to his.
“Oh, you’ll have to be. I expect it”.
“You wouldn’t expect we could go for some coffee after we get into…” the date proposition vanished into a look of fear at the submersible.
Remus put a hand over his shoulders. The drowning jokes would have to wait until they were emerging.
“Don’t worry, my thicc ass has been there tons of times! It’s just a lot of water”.
“While it’s true he’s been there more than you, he’s overplaying his own ass. It’s kind of droopy” a heavily accented voice said
“Who are you calling droopy?”
They turned to see a tall blond woman smiling smugly. Erika Engström, oceanographer and the operator of the submersible.
“You, obviously, do you have water in your ears?”
“Not yet, but we’ll see if…”
Nathan held his breath.
“Nah, I don’t”.
“He either thinks you’re cute or he’s afraid the captain will throw him off-board if he keeps bullying you”, Erika told Nathan.
“I wasn’t bullying anyone”.
“Sorry to break it to you, but you’re always bullying people, you don’t know how else to flirt”.
“Then I would be flirting with everyone”.
“Aren’t you?”
“Okay, yeah”.
“Come on, I have to set up things. Give me a hand, rat skull”.
“At least give me a knife or something”.
“You can chew it through”.
One last look at Nathan before following her.
“Well, I’ll leave you to stress out, if I don’t help her we’ll dro…” oh right, no drowning jokes. “We’ll…”
“Flirt with me when we’re back at the surface”.
Remus smiled.
“Will do!”
-----
The light was beginning to fade out. The flickering of the few rays coming through a swirl of silvery fish would be their last glimpses at natural lighting for a while.
It was wonderful.
How the underwater landscape changed, morphing into something out of a nightmare. Never ceases to amaze him. People would say it was all just blue getting darker and darker, and it was! But it was also a thick fog from which anything could come out. He always looked forward to seeing the weirdest fish appear.
There wasn’t much room behind the giant acrylic viewport. Despite being stuck so closely together, Remus could feel a chill as the air within got cooled by the deep water. His coat lay forgotten at the back of his chair still.
Once the lights of the submersible switched on, a delicate dance of white dust shined just like it would on a sunny day. This was no room dust. But there was just as much beauty in seeing the marine snow surrounding them. Teensy tiny pieces of dead fish falling all around, making the nicest shapes.
“It’s so quiet” Nathan observed.
“Wait until you hear a whale. The first time I did I thought my skull would pop”.
“Which one?” Erika kept her eyes on the water, but he could see the reflection of a smile curving onto the surface of the acrylic.
“Well, the small one. I know you’d hate to have to scrape my brains off your console”.
“If you had any I would”.
“There would still be plenty of blood”.
The ship carried on with the descend, soon, they’d be at twenty thousand feet. Nathan leaned in.
“Hey, what did she mean by which one?” he said in a hushed voice.
“Oh! Right”
He pulled on the string of his necklace to get it from under his shirt. Remus held it in front of Nathan’s face.
It turned, revealing the empty sockets and the front of what used to be a snout.
“I have this rat skull as a necklace! Erika teases me because that’s how she copes with the fact that she hates it!”
“Anyone would hate it. You wear that thing everywhere. It’s creepy” Erika pointed out.
“Where did you get it?” Nathan asked.
In the dim light, Remus’s smile cast shadows, giving him a grim vibe.
“I used to have a pet rat. When it died it sucked, my brother and I buried it in the backyard. It was there until three years later when we got a heavy storm. The bones peeked through the mud. So I just yanked a bit on the spine and got it. The skull was already defleshed anyway, so, aside from cleaning it a bit, I didn’t have to do any of the work. I really like this necklace. I got into marine biology because I began looking at fish skulls and I wanted to see more”.
“That’s…” Nathan began to say.
Suddenly, the submersible turned violently.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know, I couldn’t take a good look”, said Erika.
Her frown told Remus something was seriously wrong.
“Guys, we’re picking up really weird signals from here. Are you all okay?” the sound of Ella’s voice through the radio distracted him from his train of thought.
“It’s all under control, but I am going to begin ascending” Erika replied.
“We haven’t taken all the samples”, Nathan said.
“We’ll have another chance. Right now I’m worried that---”
Erika did not have time to finish talking.
Its needle-like teeth loomed over the viewport. This creature was unlike anything he’d ever seen. Part of him felt excited at how terrifying it all was. Sadly, he had the feeling they were all about to die. This fish looked like a giant barracuda and an angry one.
The creature snapped its jaw closed, cracking the viewport.
Seemingly, it didn’t find it tasty enough and it swam away even moodier than before. The very least it could have done was eat them.
If you’re going to kill them might as well finish the job.
Remus’ body floated into the dark abyss as he struggled to breathe. Covering his ears tightly, he screamed in pain. The pressure was unlike anything.
Well, it had been fun.

i guess today is just not a good day. been playing for a good 6 hours and only got like 3 fcs and no progress on TTFAF, One or Raining Blood.
gonna take a break until tomorrow. I didn't get bad at the game all of a sudden, usually when i start to practice for hours on end everyday I hit a wall in under 3 days and today is that day. also today it's cold as hell which hinders mobility and this game requires a lot of fine motor skills. it's especially debilitating because I'm trying to rely on tapping the least possible so Flood trills are almost impossible to to, even on 50% speed.
also fuckkkkkkkk the Xplorer's button placement. its select button makes it 70% harder to squeeze. been trying to beat my PC scores on Barracuda and School's Out but it is impossible aaaaa
