Writing Guide: Character Profile

Many writers develop a character profile through brainstorming. There are a lot of ways to brainstorm.

Make a list of your character's traits and characteristics.

Journal as your character.

Create a playlist that your character would like.

Interview your character.

Role-play by putting yourself in your character's shoes in different circumstances.

Create a collage.

Consider the following questions.

What are their strengths and weaknesses?

What happened to your character prior to the beginning of the book to make them the way that they are?

What is your character's main motivation? What do they want from life?

What do they need from life? Are they aware of it or are they searching for something else?

What are their insecurities and fears?

How do they speak around others?

How are they different when they are alone?

How do they grow throughout the novel?

Do they have any unique quirks, habits, accents, sayings, or mannerisms?

What is their moral code? Values? Do these change as they evolve?

Winter Greenery OC Questions.

A little list of OC questions based on the folklore of winter greenery in Northern Europe. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all symbolic meanings, but rather just a small selection for entertainment, rather than educational, purposes.

Fir: Endurance and Hope.

Is your OC generally optimistic about the future?  Or do they tend to prepare for the worst, whilst hoping for the best? Or do they even take a generally pessimistic view of the way things will likely unfold?

Does your OC actively attempt to nurture or inspire hope in others – even when things look particularly dire? Or are they inclined to be more blunt with their assessment of a situation?

Would your OC ever fight for a lost cause on principle?  Or would they give up – or even change allegiance – in order to ensure the best outcome for themselves?

Has your OC ever taken on a burden or suffered harm to protect another from suffering its consequences?  Did the person in question realise that they had done so?  What was their motivation when doing this?

Has your OC ever been unfaithful in a relationship?  Could they ever be tempted by the physical charms of another?  Or have they ever been surprised by how little they are tempted by others, at least once they embraced their current lover?

What inspires loyalty in your OC?  Will they follow someone purely based upon duty or rank? Or are there certain qualities towards which they are drawn?  Or perhaps there ways by which another person must prove themselves before earning their loyalty?

Has another person ever offered to leave their spouse or lover for your OC?  What was it about them that this person found so hard to resist? How did they feel about it at the time? 

Does your OC feel any abiding connection to their place of birth?  Has this ever been challenged by conflicting loyalties?  How are they viewed by those currently living in their society of origin?

Does your OC remain steadfastly loyal to those who have helped them on their journey?  Or are they quick to dispense with those who are no longer of use to them?

Mistletoe: Peace and Friendship.

Who was your OC’s first friend?  What drew them to each other?  Were they expecting to get along? Or was it a surprise to them both?

Does your OC find it easy to make friends?   What barriers are there to them doing so?  Has this changed over time?

Do other people experience your OC as having a “peaceful” energy? Or are they inclined to restlessness - or even fractiousness?  Do others find them relaxing company?

To what extent does your OC believe in the perfectibility of mankind?  Do they believe that they are playing a part, no matter how small, in ushering in a new utopian age of co-operation and peace?  Or do they consider that people are intrinsically flawed and that the best that can be hoped for is a series of trade-offs between conflicting values?

Who is your OCs most unlikely friend? What made their friendship so unexpected?

Pine: Healing and Longevity.

What is the worst physical injury or illness that your OC has ever suffered?  How long did it take them to recover?  Does it still have an impact upon them now?

What is the worst emotional or spiritual wound that your OC has ever suffered?  What was the long-term impact of this experience? What helped them to move on from it (if they ever have)?

Does your OC make a good patient?  Or are they resistant to being given medical treatment - or even agreeing to rest?

Does your OC expect to live a long and fruitful life?  Or do they consider themselves to already be living on borrowed time?

Does your OC believe it is better to burn out than to fade away?  Or do they perhaps pretend to believe this, when actually they would be quite happy to retire peacefully one day?

Birch: Rebirth and Regeneration.

Has your OC ever experienced something that changed them irrevocably?  If so, then how do they view the person they were before?

Does your OC believe that sometimes a person needs to hit rock bottom before they can begin to rebuild their life?  Has this ever been their personal experience?  Or would they rather spare someone suffering, even if it meant they failed to learn from their mistakes over and over again?

Does your OC recover quickly from injuries?  Or has it got harder for them to keep bouncing back as they’ve got older?  If so, is this something they would ever admit?

actually i get very emotional when i think about the giant ants arc because when arcos is told that there's an entire colony of monsters that could easily destroy the estate the very first thing he asks is where lloyd is. and when he's told that he's still down in the mine he doesn't hesitate for even one second to grab his armor and go down there himself just to get to lloyd. like. those things are huge and they're vicious and there's hundreds of them and to face them is *checks notes* "to guarantee your own death". arcos hasn't even touched his sword for a decade. he's not winning that battle. but it doesn't fucking matter at all because his son is down there and arcos is going to get to him even if it kills him.

he just. he fucking loves his kid so much. and this is not even like that far ahead into the novel. lloyd is barely beginning to clean up his body's act. this is chapter 25 it's like 6% of the whole plot. and this man was already completely and unhesitatingly willing to die for his son. how am i supposed to not cry about that.

Prior to her appearance on IGNITE!, VIOLET debuted twice. Her first group lasted nine months. Her second group lasted three—in hindsight, that one might have been a scam. Lightspeed will last eleven. It seems to be a pattern with her. She was first interested in becoming an idol at the age of thirteen. Highly inspired by second generation girl groups like SNSD and T-ara, she began to learn how to sing and dance. At seventeen, Violet moved to South Korea to pursue her dream, against her parents’ wishes. She has not spoken to them in eight years.

IGNITE! was truly her last chance. After nearly a decade of trying and failing to be an idol, she was almost ready to call it quits. That was when Violet learned of the show from her older sister. After breezing through the audition and early stages of the show, her professionalism and obvious desperation helped her secure second place, and a spot in Lightspeed.

Although a good enough performer, he was seen more as comic relief and a moodmaker than a serious contender for the winning group. He was also popular for his constant promotion of his family’s Koreatown bakery instead of himself. In the finale, his rank skyrocketed from seventh to second, surprising Ash most of all. He is Lightspeed’s leader in name and not much else.

While attending university, he was met with the opportunity to participate in IGNITE! As a competitor, Ev was known mostly for his quiet disposition and peacemaking abilities. He acknowledged his lack of skill in the beginning, and improved greatly throughout the show’s run. He placed third.

Artbook stuff!

Dev comments under the profiles of Alain, Scarlett, Lex, Chloe and Joseph!

Interesting notes about Alain, especially the "he's trying to be a character he is not".

I've seen people complain that Alain is a goody-two shoes milquetoast protagonist, but it's implied in the game that his "princely" persona he's showing to everyone is something he and Jospeh cultivated, og/real Alain can be seen with Lex, Chloe, Joseph and sometimes with other characters too (crying in front of Virginia, wondering if people care about him as the Prince or him as Alain with Leah or being too enthusiasmed to help Morard in his theater play!).

It also plays with the different routes/choices the game gives to the player - Alain can do the princely thing, listen to Joseph and liberate the world before getting his revenge... or he can ignore everything (even Scarlett!) to charge at Galerius - ignoring Joseph's efforts to teach him and make him grow in "correct" prince - and actually, well... trigger a bad end lol.

The notes for Scarlett aren't anything remotely as interesting as Alain's.

Strong-willed or reliable wouldn't be the first characteristics I'd associate to her, given how late the Albion plot happens, and I wonder if they're mentionning the conversations she has with the angels, because the "i'm jealous other women are looking at Alain" schitck grows old very very fast.

I still found it wholesome how the devs thanks the staff for making her a character in this game lol

Lex's design was from a former game designed 15 years ago, I knew he had a "protag haircut" , perfect with the "shonen mc traits".

But making him in the sympathic and good-natured bro of the Lord who's struggling to deal with his "prince/real me" persona is nice, and I really like how Lex, for a random fisherman's son, has lines and small plot custcenes with nearly every important character, hell has rapport convos with a lot of people!

For the "Lord's childhood's best bro", he's really an interesting twist on similar characters who follow the same trope.

"I wanted to make her look brave and courageous, so I gave her the impression of a puppy"

I love this, it's the best description of a puppy I've seen in years lol

Chloe underestimates herself a lot, but as seen in the Ridiel paralogue, she's really someone interesting with her own outlook on the Liberation Army : even if she dies like fodder, her efforts won't be in vain because she knows the army will succeed she will have participated in that, or even inspire people around her.

NGL, her "Ganbatte" thing also made me smile lol, loldiers (her class) are pretty support oriented and it's nice that gameplay and narration wise, she does her best to support everyone!

Jeigan Joseph!

TBF, I always found that he reminded me of someone, even if I couldn't quite put it, I wonder what was the "spanish film" they're mentionning lol.

Alain being amazed/inspired by the figure of Joseph running away with him on his steed really does a throwback to Leif'n'Finn from FE5, complete with the "he's basically his lord's foster father and it troubles him a lot, their relationship is complicated but precious".
