Headcanon + clothes for Severus

send  me  ‘ headcanon ‘  +  a  word  and  i  will  give  you  a  headcanon  around  it.

i personally feel like i project my desire to be fashionable onto severus BUT severus snape is actually quite ✨fashionable✨ .

as a child , severus has only known the rags their mother could afford and the tailored down version of his mother and father’s clothing . it never truly bothered them that they wore their parents’ clothing but of course , the world has a harsh way of putting matters into perspective . 

before hogwarts , severus experienced bullying from the neighborhood kids who ( while not any better off than they were ) found them to be an easy target not just because they wore rags or their parents’ clothing but because severus wore woman’s clothing that made their gender quite ambiguous and to the children and adults of the time, very misleading . it did not help that they were often quite dirty , with oily skin and unwashed hair . personally , severus rather liked wearing their mother’s old clothes . it fit and framed them in a way tobias’ clothing and the clothing most boys their age at the time didn’t .

severus didn’t come into dressing androgynously until they were sixteen and while being at hogwarts or a member of slytherin house didn’t exactly offer them the safety of expressing themself freely , magic did . 

with no source of income , severus learned to transfigure their clothing to fit their needs . they combined fashion they saw not just from the wizarding world but from the muggle world as well to fit their taste and desire . slowly , but surely , severus went from wizarding robes to witches’ robes , mixing and matching from the selection both genders’ provided. 

by the time severus graduated from hogwarts , they found they liked this ambiguous style of dressing which lead to an exploration and questioning of their gender identity . severus experienced their first dose of gender euphoria from the uncertainty in pronouns people would express and the constant switching that came with the assumptions being made .

to themself , privately , and to those they trust , severus uses they / them / he / him / she / her pronouns . they feel no desire to correct pronouns unless adamant that someone specifically uses a specific set as requested by severus . 

due to having been known for their ragged appearances as a child and well into their teen years , one of severus’ biggest expenses is their clothing . clothes makes a person and severus feels no exception to this rule . there is serotonin that comes from a good outfit . there is power to be felt in your appearance . while severus eventually grows into themself as an adult , there is a level of intense insecurity that comes with their appearance due to the bullying they experienced as a child and at hogwarts .

as you can see there is a fondness for high waisted pants and skirts .

you want for perfection.

forget their abandonment issues, their sense of defectiveness, or their willingness to sacrifice themself. what holds severus back the most is their unrealistic and unobtainable set of standards they hold themself and others too as well.

severus must strive to meet very high internalized standards of behaviour and performance, ideally to avoid criticism. perfection grants acknowledgement and who doesn't want to be seen and heard? this typically results in feelings of pressure or difficulty slowing down; and in hyper-criticalness toward oneself and others.

it feeds into their self deprecation and is shown by the rigid rules they hold themself and others too, expecting the most and the best out of everyone and themself. severus cannot accept anything less than their best, which often leads to a sense of failure and incompetence.

40. Does sabotaging yourself give you an odd sense of comfort?

yes.

it makes them feel alive. it reminds them they are flawed and to never expect anything more from themself. if things are going too well, instead of waiting for the inevitable, why not make it happen yourself? cut the middle man out in favor of receiving a quicker dose of euphoria, knowing you were right all along.

there's their sense of control. disappointment is all they've ever known, and it is a hunger that needs to be fed.

44. What’s the boldest thing you do every day, just to feel like you’re still in control?

waking up.

they've cheated death one too many times, and to wake up is the greatest defiance they could ever offer the gods above. let god smite them for their hubris.

Friends. The ability to breathe without suffocating. Acceptance.

As an adult?

Freedom is a great start. A cabin in the woods far away from civilization and with a garden they can nurture. Solitude and isolation; no one to bend them backwards and make them kneel. The right to speak and to be heard. A lover would be too bold and hopeful of them to ask for but they could settle for one acquaintance at most.

my biggest update for severus is fiddling around with their animagus and patronus . we know for a fact that your patronus can change and i feel while severus may have initially started with a lionhead rabbit as their patronus , it feels fitting to allow it to evolve and become a vulpes vulpes melanistic silver fox around the age of 25 when they are fully thrown into the role of playing spy and embodies it  or rather , embraces this role in its entirety .

i also like having the vulpes vulpes melanistic silver fox being their animagus form which was acquired when they are 28 . 

severus’ evolution and growth is just really important to me and for them to go from a rabbit to a fox is a smooth transition that feels very plausible to their narrative .
