                carmen was seeing red as she noticed some other bitch fawning over mina. her girlfriend. and the worst part about it all was that mina didn’t seem to care. she was laughing and flirting with this groupie - one of many that seemed to show up after mina’s band performed. and although mina knew she shouldn’t entertain any of it, carmen’s jealousy took over and she found herself storming over to where the two were. she doesn’t think twice before grabbing mina’s arm and dragging her away. “who the fuck is that? did you really think you could flirt with some other whore and i wouldn’t notice?” carmen seethed, “what kind of game are you playing?” // @goldenhovr​

carmen scoffs, although she doesn't really have a good response for iris. she was basically doing the exact same thing as her. "yeah. but the difference is that it's only for a night. you're still staying with that asshole after you promised me you'd leave him. don't you dare compare us." carmen was still pissed when iris told her to basically stay away from her as well as her current boy toy. "fucking fine," she hissed before she has no choice but to force herself to keep her composure and smile for the cameras. the last thing she wanted to do was smile when all she wanted to do was keep fighting. but carmen had no choice, soon ushered inside with her date. but, all the while, she kept sneaking glances at iris and feeling both angry and sad that she couldn't be next to her.

"how about you?" iris said with a small raise of her eyebrow. the last thing she wanted to do was deflect all of this away since she was right, but the last thing she would expect was for carmen to walk in here with a date. "it looks like i'm not the only one around here with a boyfriend." even saying the word made her stomach turn. she could feel her heart beating faster since she hadn't seen carmen this angry throughout their whole relationship. she knew that behind that smile that she wasn't happy at all that iris showed up with her 'boyfriend' still on her arm. "fine, you and your boyfriend should do the same." she said with a little huff as she tried to compose herself for the pictures. the smile was almost plastered on her face for every camera that was pointed in their direction. she knew one slip up and people might think something was wrong. they continued to walk down the carpet, smiling in every direction before finally getting off and being ushered inside.

Hello Kiki! Hope you're doing well! The other day I was snooping around on the r6s wiki and I was checking out the names that some operators have since I realised I only know a handful of them. As I was looking at Alibi's and Maestro's names I thought to myself (I am italian) 'damn, they really have such basic italian names and surnames'. Then I realised that I also have such a basic italian name and surname like so many other italians. So, even if they sounded weird to me at first impact, their names are actually pretty realistic. So my question is, for you or anyone else on your blog that can answer me, what do you all think of the operators names that come from languages or countries you're familiar with?

This is a very interesting ask, and one that has had me thinking about it for the whole day. I had this "this is such a basic name tho" some time ago with a friend, in relation to a different game/characters, but as you point out, it is realistic as well cause for a name to be basic/common that means a lot of real people are named like that.

I can only answer for the Spaniards, which I'll analyze in detail under the cut, but I want to encourage anyone reading this to reblog and share their opinions about names for any operator from their countries! I think it might be a very fun and interesting collaborative thread :D

Now, onto the Mira & Jackal issue:

Let's start with Mira, actual name Elena María Alvarez.

Right off the bat, I can tell there's a surname missing. In Spain, we have 2 surnames, first one is the dad's first surname, and the second one is the mother's first surname. So Mira's full name is not really known here, huh. And no, María is not a surname, it's some sort of middle name in this case.

Of those names, María is the super common, most sterotypical possible name ever alongisde Carmen and Cristina. Also, María is very used in combined names, such as the one Mira has. Except María tends to be the first one in the combo, not the other way around. So Elena María is kinda rare/weird compared to the common María Elena, but still possible.

Now, for Jackal, aka, Ryad Ramírez Al-Hassar.

Here we have the two surnames as it's traditional, Ramirez being the one he got from his dad and Al-Hassar being the one he got from his mom. From this we can deduce his mother is of arabic descent, which is extremely common in his place of birth, Ceuta (a small Spanish territory in the coast of Morocco, same as Melilla). His name, Ryad, is also of arabic origin, which is unsurprising. It's a common name in Ceuta and Melilla, since mixed families and arabic influence are the most mundane thing, but for the broader context of Spain, Ryad is an odd/uncommon name.

Which brings me to a personal HC kinda related to this, being that due to the islamophobia very present in some corners of the country, he probably had a hard time with his fellow recruits when he first joined the national police, due to his name & second surname.

it’s 7:08 pm on saturday. there are no classes for the day. everyone is on campus, everything seems fine. but something weird starts happening. the cameras in the security room seem to go on a loop. no one really notices anything. a few minutes pass and the cameras jump to a live feed. THERE’S A BODY. a classroom has been trashed, tables flipped and books scattered. on the wall written in blood is “ beware ”. no one can make out who the body is at first but the protocol is clear: lockdown.

so someone has DIED. we won’t outright say it just yet as your characters won’t know ( except whichever one of you is the killer i guess ). but it won’t take much sleuthing to figure out who’s dead. staff will be informed that a body was discovered, but the identity won’t be named.

under the cut you will find which room/area your characters are locked in. you can invent whatever reason for your character being there. however, they had to be inside this room or nearby at the time the alarms went off. other security officers would have escorted some people into the nearest rooms. you can have your characters text between each other if you want but the only in-person threads will be with those locked in with you. we highly encourage multi-person threads!! all dash activity will be specific to the event until it is over.

          it’s hard to sort through conflict when your heart wants one thing and your brain wants the exact opposite. but when carmen speaks, all mina can hear is her. all she can see is her. ❛ it’s always been you, baby, ❜ the brunette says lowly, barely above a whisper, as she looks deeply into the other’s eyes to convey only truth in her words. hands gently cup her cheeks, calloused thumbs wiping away any tears that threaten to fall. the last time things got this emotional, it was for the worst reasons. now, mina intends to change all of that. she gathers the newfound strength blooming in her chest and speaks once again. ❛ i love you. and i’ve never stopped — i’ve always loved you. ❜ the confessions rolls off her tongue easily, like it was completely meant to be. and she takes this moment to lean in, fully closing the gap between them to press her lips against hers. ❛ don’t ever leave me again. you hear me ? ❜ she says against the other’s lips, desperate hands grabbing at her waist and pulling her in tight.

             carmen was afraid, a rare emotion for the girl who tried her best not to be afraid of anything. but she was afraid that mina might let her go again. carmen barely managed to handle the heartbreak the first time. she doesn’t think she could do it again. but then mina finally responds and the relief that floods throughout her body is something new. carmen immediately melts underneath mina’s touch and if it were possible to move any closer, she would’ve immediately taken it. “you have?” it was almost hard for carmen to believe it, given how things had ended between them. their last official conversation had gone sort of like this one, only for it to end in them splitting up. now they were getting back together again. carmen briefly smiles before mina kisses her. instantly, carmen kisses her back and holds onto mina as closely as possible - slightly afraid that if she were to let go, mina might leave again. “i won’t,” carmen quickly responds with a small shake of her head, “i’m not leaving you. don’t leave me again either. i can’t handle losing you for a second time.” carmen felt like she was dreaming but when she’d kiss mina again - deeper and longer this time - she’d be reminded that it was all real and mina was hers again.

One Day at a Time is the newest Latinx family sitcom which features a very important LGBT storyline. Latinx LGBT characters are still rare in today’s media even while LGBT stories are being featured more and more. One of the most recent Latinx LGBT characters was Santana Lopez from Glee. Santana Lopez’s storyline was one of the most amazing that I’ve seen in a long time. First off, Santana was played by Latina actor Naya Rivera. Something The L Word failed to do not once, but twice, casting non-Latinx actors for both Carmen and Papi.

Santana Lopez was a Latinx character, but unfortunately being Latinx wasn’t a part of her except for random references and poorly used Spanish that was played for laughs. The one instance that I think many gay Latinxs can relate to was her coming out scene with her grandmother. The first time I watched it (cause I have seen it more than once) was something many of us have either faced or dreaded. Coming out and having the person you loved the most reject you because of who you are and who you love.

In that coming out scene I found one common thread between many Latinx coming out stories. That part of being rejected was the religious part and how being gay was wrong, but also in being out. It became a problem when you told people and were out. For some gay Latinxs they are out to their families, but it isn’t something you speak about. The family pretends it doesn’t exist and instead your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner turns into your best friend of seven years.

This is where One Day at a Time deviates. Elena Alvarez is the daughter of Penelope and is seen as a smart young woman who understands what she wants from the world. Elena’s coming out process begins in the middle of the season when she begins to wonder how to come out to her family. How to explain that she might like guys and girls and eventually her acceptance that she only likes girls. Her fear of coming out and Penelope’s reaction to her is one of the most touching that I’ve seen. You understand it from both sides. Elena’s need to be accepted and Penelope’s fear for her daughter and their own relationship. The line that hit me the most was when Penelope says “It’s just that now that it’s my daughter. It’s different,” because that’s how my mom reacts to gay things. In high school I had two gay friends, at least two that were out, and she loved them. The problem was that as I got older she began making it clear that other people could be gay, but I couldn’t be. I’m still not out to her because I know the problems it would cause. Penelope eventually talks to friends and  does research on Autostraddle to try and educate herself more so she can be comfortable with it, but it’s a process. The most important thing is that she makes it clear that she doesn’t love Elena any less, but Penelope worries about her Lydia will react.

Lydia’s reaction and eventual acceptance is one of my favorite parts because Lydia has been established as a devout Catholic. Being Catholic is a big part of her Cuban identity and homosexuality is considered a sin in Catholicism. But her own process is intertwined with her religious beliefs. She believes that God makes everyone in his image and he doesn’t make mistakes along with Pope Francis who stated “Who am I to judge?” She uses her religious beliefs to accept Elena instead of judging her and it shows a new side to the argument. One that Latinxs don’t usually face. One where religion is used to support them instead of shun them.

Storylines like these are important because Latinxs, and especially young Latinxs, need to see that they can be accepted and loved by their families. That when they come out they won’t be immediately kicked out of their families for who they are. One Day at a Time in the end shows that above all families love each other no matter who they are.

             “me, of course,” carmen remarked, a smug grin decorating her features. “you seriously didn’t think you could have a party without me, did you?” as if carmen would ever turn down the opportunity to get drunk and terrorize meilin at the same time. “besides, you know you’d miss me too much if i didn’t show up.”

carmen & iris.

   iris doubled down on her offer to carmen, and she hoped by offering her this apartment for the two of them, it showed her how much she was committed to them, even if she couldn’t show it for the moment. while she still had to keep this relationship under wraps she made sure to only be photographed with her ‘boyfriend’ in public. it wasn’t an ideal situation but thankfully the both of them understood, or at least iris hoped carmen understood this was what she had to do. their shoot was finished and going through editing at the moment, but she knew press was going to be right around the corner. instead of worrying about that, she was too overjoyed to be curled up on her couch with carmen, holding her close and just enjoying the moment. “if i get one more call from another magazine asking for a quote i might flip.” iris said with a little roll of her eyes as she set her phone down, flipping it so she couldn’t see the screen on the other side. “you know they brought up possibly having a sequel to this? i don’t know if i’d want to do it… i’d rather do something else with you.” 

              carmen could see that iris was really serious about them moving in together. but most of all, it showed that iris was serious about making them work as a couple. it made carmen even more desperate for them to try and be a couple after the event, so they could stop hiding. and iris wouldn’t have to keep parading around town with her fake boyfriend. although their situation was far from usual, she had hope for their future. regardless of the risks that inevitably came from it in the form of crazy fans or paparazzi. “you and me both,” carmen responds with a chuckle, briefly glancing at iris’ phone out of curiosity before her gaze falls back onto the red head. “a sequel? sure, the money would be good but it’s not worth it if i have to keep on pretending like i hate you. i’m tired of having to pretend all the time,” carmen sighs. "we should seriously think about doing a rom-com.

"how could you not have known? you had to. you didn't even think to warn me!" was carmen being a major hypocrite? of course. she hadn't told iris about her own date. but really, iris should already know that was just for tonight. this was different. iris promised her that she'd be finally dumping her fake boyfriend and they could work towards coming out together. and now that had fallen apart in a matter of minutes. "sure, we can get through tonight. but i hope you and your . . . boyfriend stay away from me," carmen says, speaking each harsh word with a bright smile on her lips. she was absolutely furious and she couldn't even stand to look at iris right now. "i'm serious, iris. i don't want to have to do something i'll regret later."

iris wasn't thrilled with the fact that she was still 'dating' her 'boyfriend.' her management had pushed for at least until after the premier of her new movie that they would have to stay together before a fallout even though she had told carmen something different. the two of them hadn't been in the same room together, and she just hoped that everything would go smoothly. as the two of them walked the red carpet together, the last thing she wanted to do was look over at carmen even though that was much easier said than done. the two of them had a moment alone and as she plastered a smile on her face, she got close to her and tilted her head a bit at her. "because i didn't know he was going to be here." she said through her teeth as she moved a little closer to her. "trust me, i didn't want him to be here either but somehow he's sticking around until after this." she could a bit of tension between the two and the last thing she wanted was for something to happen between them, or eve carmen and her 'boyfriend'. "can we just get through tonight please?"

although carmen's not thrilled to be at this event with a fake date, she was excited to see iris. she was looking forward to seeing her girlfriend and having fun with her. but in the midst of talking to one of the guests, she spots the redhead . . . and yet, she wasn't alone. iris was hanging on the arm of her own fake boyfriend, the one man iris wasn't expecting to see. carmen continues to watch them, waiting for a moment when she could get to her girlfriend alone. and when she finally gets the opportunity, carmen slides right next to her. "you came here with him?" carmen asks, doing her best to keep a smile on her face. but she was seething with rage on the inside. "why didn't you tell me that you were going to be here with him? you know how much i hate him." carmen hadn't warned iris about her own fake date but she figured iris would already know the deal about that. seeing iris flaunt her fake boyfriend around pissed her off.

"i think we could get some matching leather outfits, wouldn't even have to be for a movie." iris teased back with a wink. all this talk did make it more real that carmen did want this relationship to work out and all iris could do was hope that they could keep this a secret for a bit longer. other opportunities would come their way and she knew when they were both booked again that they could eventually let the world know about them. until then they had to keep everything underwraps and enjoy their little dinners like this. "alright, which one would be elle woods?" she teased as she went to set everything up and grabbed drinks for the both of them. "i don't know how i'll feel if we're not on the same set... what if i'm filming here and you have to go across the world? i'll miss you too much." iris said with a small pout as she went to sit next to her and leaned her head on her shoulder. "or we could come out to go see each other, but that would still be a lot of back and forth... we'll figure it out." iris said as she went to go grab some food. "if you could have your dream role, what would it be, carm?"

"good, because that's exactly what i want to do. i wanna kiss you on and off screen," carmen responds with a grin of her own. as much as carmen wished that they could star in a movie together without having to hate each other, she knew that she'd take it for the money and the boosted fame. "honestly? they probably would. we are the best stars in their damn movies. they won't let us go without a fight," carmen responds. after their ( all too brief ) kiss, iris gets up to go and check the door before getting their food. "blind dates sound really cute actually," carmen agrees, getting up to help iris with setting up the food. she was hungry and she couldn't wait until she was able to eat with her girlfriend. "you mean one that's already out? because i definitely think we could pull off legally blonde really well but make it super gay and romantic," carmen replies. "well . . . as long as i get to wear leather, i guess i'll star in all of the action movies. but you have to wear leather too. we have to be matching."

"see you just want to kiss me on screen, which i wouldn't be opposed to." she teased with a little wink before chuckling to herself. she could see why carmen would be hesitant to a sequel, but she knew if they were offered something then she wouldn't pass it up. the money would be great, and even though they'd have to pretend to hate one another again she didn't mind for a bit. "think they'd hire us both again?" she said with a chuckle when she heard a buzz at her apartment door. as she gave carmen a quick kiss, she went to go grab their food from her door and brought it all back for them to relax and eat. "what kind of rom-com would you want to do? typical hopeless romantic, or even better we could be each other's blind dates that would be fun." iris said with a smile as she started to organize all of their food. "if you could pick the perfect movie for us to star in, what would it be?" she said with a smile as she took a seat next to her. "i think we're done with dramas... maybe a big action movie that could be fun. you could wear a lot of leather, i mean i'd love that for sure." she teased as she gave her a playful nudge.

carmen & mina.

          she takes a moment to reminisce about the past. it wasn’t necessarily good ( toxicity is hard to grow out of ) but there were arguably simpler times. things have only gotten more complicated since then, it seems. ❛ of course i still want you. i wouldn’t be here if i didn’t. ❜ just say the word. can she even do that ? after being self-destructive for this long, especially when it came to her relationship with carmen, could mina let it go ? ❛ it’s… it’s just not that easy. ❜ and there she goes, making excuses once again. as if she didn’t just confess that she’s still hung up on the other, bitching about her new boyfriend, being tragically honest then yanking it away. mina shakes her head, trying to gather her thoughts to form the right words despite there probably not being any. ❛ we’re not good for each other, carmen. ❜ now that’s the truth, but it’s just not what anybody wants to hear. she runs a hand through her hair, the distress evident on her face as she takes in a deep breath. ❛ i’m scared. of getting hurt, and hurting you. all over again. ❜ a lump forms in her throat as she tries to fight away tears. she places her hands on the others arms, standing close, searching for some sort of answer in her eyes. ❛ what if we make a mistake ? what if i fuck it all up ? ❜

               mina’s response gives carmen hope. and there was no emotion more dangerous than hope. for a while, she thought that she had been alone in wanting mina. carmen didn’t want for mina to move on or even forget her even if it was arguably for the better. she wanted mina to want her just as badly, if not more. but mina’s following words make her heart shatter. “what are you talking about? of course we are. we’re perfect for each other. nobody knows you like i do. no one could ever love you the way i do and you know that.” the normally smug and confident girl was falling apart. she never had to beg anyone to stay with her, except for mina who was intent on being a coward. “you don’t have to be scared,” carmen replies, blinking away the tears threatening to blur her vision, “we’ve already hurt each other so many times but it’s okay. this time, we can do better. learn from our mistakes. please just come back to me. we can start over and just try our hardest not to hurt each other.” would it be easy? probably not. they both had their issues and carmen wasn’t the easiest woman to deal with. but she wasn’t going to give up on mina while they still had a chance. “i love you, mina, and i know you love me too. i just need to hear you say it. tell me you want me back and that you want us to try again. please.” she’s never been this desperate before and while it was scary, it only convinced carmen that what they had was real.

          the atmosphere had changed almost instantly. who even knew that the two could have a serious conversation like this ? she bites back another childish insult about the boyfriend and makes the final decision to take this head-on. be honest and communicative for once — new territory for them. ❛ i was a wreck then. i didn’t think i deserved you—- or anything at all. i hated myself. ❜ it’s been a rough few years, and it will continue to be that way. but going through that led to many realizations and new things to be learned of herself. the brunette swallows thickly, trying to muster the courage to continue. she has to clear her throat to prevent her voice from coming out so weakly. ❛ but seeing you with him… ❜ she chuckles bitterly, the only way for mina to relieve the tension in her body whenever she thinks of her ex being with someone else. ❛ i don’t know. jealousy. it consumes me. ❜ a shaky breath leaves her lips like a long-held sigh. ❛ but i guess it’s too late. and i’m a fucking idiot. ❜

             carmen didn’t like where this was going. she was supposed to be winning. she was supposed to hurt mina like mina had hurt her and feel satisfied. now too many emotions were involved and this was going beyond her control. how could carmen have thought that this would end any differently? instead of responding, carmen chose to listen. it was hard for her to stay upset when she heard mina’s reasoning. she wished that she had heard this a lot sooner. brushing her hair out of her face, carmen took a deep breath before looking over at mina again. “as much as i wish you could’ve told me this sooner, i’m happy you finally told me. i thought i was the cause of it for so long. i know i wasn’t easy when we were together. i was a raging, jealous bitch most of the time.” carmen was messy and flawed and complicated. but mina was the only one to understand her because she had been just as messy as her. “but i never wanted for us to end. i always wanted us to work and be together. the only reason i’m with him is because i couldn’t have you. it’s always been you, mina.” carmen had tried to replace mina but it was already falling apart. no one had ever made her feel this way before and even though carmen was technically someone else’s, her heart would always belong to mina. “just say the word and i’ll leave him. he doesn’t mean a thing to me, not like you still do. tell me you still want me and he’s old news,” carmen replied, throwing the ultimatum onto mina. she knew it was a lot but that was carmen for you. this was the big moment and she hoped mina chose her so they could try again.

   as iris pulled her in for another kiss, she wrapped her arms around her waist, holding her close to her side.  “it’s not too crazy, since i think we can make it happen.” she teased. the idea of them living together made her heart skip a beat. of course it would make things extremely difficult, one picture of carmen walking out of her apartment and she knew it was all over. their fight would be over, who knew how their movie would do and she just hoped that neither of their manager would be upset at either of them as well. as she leaned in for another kiss, she smiled against her lips before giving her a playful nudge. “c’mon what would you change to this place?” she teased as she tugged her over to their couch so the two of them would be able to cuddle together. “if we are going to eventually live together, i think you should have some sort of say in what everything looks like, right?” she teased. with her arms wrapped around her, she leaned back against the couch and kept her head close to hers. “more pictures of us, obviously. do you like the couch over here? give it your touch.”  

          carmen hums, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips. she wanted it to happen. she wanted them to be official and for the whole world to know exactly who she belonged to. her dream was so close and carmen knew all she had to do was wait until their movie was over. their management couldn’t say shit after that. at least she figured so. “don’t give me too much control. i’ll end redecorating the entire place,” carmen laughs. the thing is, it wasn’t that much of a joke. if you gave carmen an inch, she’d take the whole damn mile. “well, more pictures of us is always a plus. but i guess i’d start with the paint. we need more color in here. and then i’d definitely bring in a little chandelier. nothing too outrageous,” carmen teased. “a bigger bed is always nice. if i’m gonna be living here, we’ll need a bed that fits the both of us and everything we plan on doing on it.”

            carmen couldn't help the bitter chuckle that leaves her lips at mina's weak line. she's heard worse from her and that leaves carmen feeling a little disappointed. although the disappointment quickly fades away when she sees how upset mina gets. it was clear she had struck a nerve. carmen, being the cold hearted bitch she was, should've been happy. but seeing the pain in mina's dark eyes only makes the smirk on her own lips falter. "i just... i wanted to see why you were acting so fucking weird earlier when i brought him around," carmen reasoned but she knew the reason went far deeper than that. mina only moves closer and carmen feels the little bit of resolve she had grow weaker until it disappeared entirely. "what?" this was news to her. even though her and mina's relationship had been wild and passionate, the word love had rarely been tossed around between them like it should have been. carmen had nearly been convinced that mina hadn't loved her at all until now. "you have no right saying that to me now. not now when i'm with someone else," carmen frowned, "you know, all i ever wanted was you. i loved you, and yet you let us fall apart. if you loved me so much, why didn't you fight for me? for us?" carmen had wanted mina to stay but she left and it attributed to why she became so cold. sure, she had always been a bitch before but it got worse after.

              carmen folds her arms across her chest as she watches mina dig an even deeper ditch for herself. for someone who wasn’t jealous, she was acting seriously jealous. “really? i don’t think they’re that big honestly. if anything, moving on from you to him was a really big improvement for me.” at this point, carmen’s saying whatever she can to get underneath mina’s skin. while matt was nice, he didn’t quite compare to mina but carmen’s too prideful to admit that much. and she likes messing with her ex, no matter how shitty it sounded. “me? jealous of her?” of course carmen had been. “you’re delusional if you think for a second, i was jealous of someone as cheap as her.” the only reason carmen had even cared was because she had been with mina. “there’s no way she could’ve been better. at least not better than me. lola was a major downgrade from me. i’m almost embarrassed for you, how low your standards have gotten ever since being with me. it’s okay, i understand how difficult it is to find another me.”
