Gryphonverse - Mystery Inc.
The main cast:
Fred Jones- The pure-hearted leader of Mystery Inc. He has a passion for engineering, building complex traps, although for a while he needs Velma’s help with understanding the calculations. He is also usually the one who comes up with the plans to catch the villain.
Daphne Blake- The social butterfly and public relations liaison of the team. She is the best at gathering information through interviewing witnesses and related parties, and she also has a variety of practical skills, including a talent for using items on hand to put together whatever she needs to get out of trouble or pick a lock. Her parents don’t approve of her preferred friend group or her mystery solving shenanigans, but they see that they make her happy, so they don’t argue too much (although they are often frustrated with the number of times they have to pay the teens’ bail for trespassing and breaking & entering).
Velma Dinkley- The chief bookworm of the team. While her parents run a library and shop for the occult, Velma is more interested in seeking scientific solutions. While she has difficulty with picking up social cues, she is fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She tutors Fred in math, improving his already brilliant engineering feats by helping with the calculations.
Shaggy Rogers- Easygoing and fearful, Shaggy contributes to investigations with street smarts and common sense, while also advising his friends to exercise caution. While usually afraid to face ghosts and monsters (real or human-in-disguise), he always faces his fears to help his friends. He surprises his friends with an in-depth understanding of monster lore gleaned from movies and TV shows (he is genuinely a fan of horror movies), and he is a fan of Frank Sinatra. He also displays a number of quirky skills that somehow always find a way to come in handy. He adores his little sister Maggie.
Scooby-Doo- A frightful but fiercely loyal Great Dane and a lovable companion, he is Shaggy’s pet and the mascot of Mystery Inc. He gained the ability to speak imperfect English due to being experimented on by the Barbera Foundation’s Spectral Division, which studied ectoplasm and sought to use it to enhance and empower human physiology. He escaped when an agent of OWCA went undercover as a test animal and brought the operation down. Wandering around, he was found by Shaggy, who brought him home where his moms let him keep the dog. Seeing the SD tag on the dog’s collar from the Spectral Division, Shaggy named him Scooby-Doo.
Katia Goulash- An anti-capitalist ghost who, when alive, opposed the upper class figures who used fearmongering and made-up bogeymen to disenfranchise and persecute marginalized groups. Returning to Coolsville in the present day through the Ghost Zone rift in the Crystal Cove, she torments wealthy and influential individuals who use ghosts and monsters as scapegoats for their own crimes. She develops a respect for Mystery Inc. as she watches them solve the phantom hoaxes and expose the crimes of the rich, but she distrusts Daphne, believing her family to be the same as her ancestors who took advantage of her family. Haunting Blake Mansion brings her directly to the gang’s attention, but the gang manages to clear up all misunderstandings, and Katia apologizes for causing trouble. She becomes a friend and ally who uses her spectral powers to help the gang solve mysteries, offering services as a contact with other ghosts in town.
The Mystery Begins-
At first, the teens were only somewhat acquainted, but grouped up and had to rely on each other to avoid getting hurt when caught in an alleged haunting. When Velma’s EMF detector picks up a signal that does not line up with usual ghost readings, and Scooby sniffs out a clue, they begin to think there is more than meets the eye and work together to investigate. As they piece together the case, they get to know one another and bond. Figuring out what is really going on, they inform the police, and Fred and Velma construct a trap. The trap fails due to a fluke, but Scooby overcomes his fear and defeats the villain to protect Shaggy, and Fred unmasks the phony ghost and reveals his criminal plan and tricks. Enjoying the experience of solving the mystery, they become a friend group and, when some peers come to them for help, form a junior detective business, Mystery Inc.

I can’t breathe without you + Allrico
Me leva embora daqui."

what's your view on Nick using his status to be a hero?
Nick Blaine is a hero.
Etymology: The word hero comes from the Greek ἥρως (hērōs). Literally "protector" or "defender"
Definitions: Wikipedia, Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster say a hero is:
(Continued Under the Cut!)
A real person or a main fictional character who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through feats of ingenuity, courage or strength.
A person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
An illustrious warrior.
A classical hero is considered to be a "warrior who lives and dies in the pursuit of honor"
One who shows great courage.
The principal character in a literary or dramatic work —used specifically of a principal male character especially when contrasted with heroine.
The original hero type of classical epics did such things for the sake of glory and honor. On the other hand, are post-classical and modern heroes, who perform great deeds or selfless acts for the common good instead of the classical goal of wealth, pride, and fame.
Another term associated with the concept of a hero, includes "good guy.”
The antonym of a hero is a villain (Fred and Serena Waterford).
What are Nick’s “feats” or “accomplishments?”
He had the commander who thought up the Handmaid program arrested for corruption. Nick did that. By himself. The man who came up with it is dead because of Nick Blaine. Full. Fucking. Stop.
He got June out of the Waterford House at the end of S1.
He stopped June from burning the letters from Jezebel’s. He kept them safe and smuggled them to Canada, giving them to Luke and striking a MAJOR blow to Gilead. Providing evidence of their human rights atrocities.
He forged documents and had Commander Cushing arrested, sparing June interrogation. Sparing himself unspeakable torture when Cushing found out he’d helped June escape. Making the Waterford house as safe as he could for June and Serena.
He smuggled words of love and devotion between June and her husband across international borders, though it broke his heart to do it. All of the time taking no credit for this. No glory. He did it bc it was the honorable thing to do.
He helped Rita smuggle June and Holly out of the house at the end of S2. The bigger feat? Letting June go. Knowing he’d never see her or his daughter again. But making that sacrifice so that they could be safe.
He restrained Fred Waterford at gunpoint while June and holly escaped. @aniray , @skyshipper and I agree that in Atwood’s World, Nick would have been severely punished, if not killed for emasculating Fred like this. It was super fucking dangerous. He was willing to die, putting his own body between Fred and his family. Like a stone cold badass ALPHA male rebel KING.
Also just being literally the only male in Gilead who consistently treats all women like human beings.
If Nick’s a hero, what is his quest?
S4 has made it very clear that Nick Blaine’s quest is to keep June Osborne and their baby Holly Alive.
Holly is safe in Canada.
If June makes it to Canada safely? Nick will have COMPLETED his hero’s quest.
Done. Check mark, A+, Gold Star, roll curtains.
So yes, even though he doesn’t know it, Nick IS a hero.
He’s the central male to June Osborne’s heroine. The hero of her story. He is noble. He is admired for his courage and outstanding achievements in the face of danger.
Already in S4, he’s nearly completed his self proclaimed hero’s quest: To keep June alive.
But cut my son some slack. He’s not a superhero!!!
Nick doesn’t have magic spells or potions like the Witcher. He doesn’t have money or contraptions like Batman. He doesn’t have superhuman strength. He can’t fly. He has no fangs, no special training. No special weapons or allies. He is completely alone. He’s lost everything.
So ease up on my son, he’s doing his best.
Also. If he completes his initial goal in S4, he may go on to do more in S5.
But if he doesn’t? If Nick chooses safety and love and family, like Janine wanted to? That’s A-ok in my book.
#nick blaine#nick x june#osblaine#meta#mine#100% fits the definition#definitions matter#nick's a hero in this essay i will#rae knows the things i like to talk about#thanks for the ask

Everything You Never Knew About The Nazi UFO Conspiracy Theory (it’s a wild ride)
Oil.
You could tell the story of the modern world through oil.
The thick, sticky liquid is the dark glue clobbering the West together. Nations go to war, governments plot and plunder, and innocent people get caught up in the crossfire. All for oil.
But the oil I’m talking about didn’t start a war. It instead leads us to a little known historical tale. A tale that in turn brings us to the front step of a conspiracy theory.
Our story starts in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
It’s currently -46 degrees celsius. We are surrounded by soft, white stretches of snow and sharp, mountain-esque peaks breaching the ice.
But some would have you believe there is much more to the land lying just beyond the North Pole. According to some theorists, beneath the frost-bitten ground lies an entire hidden society. And amongst the people gathering in this underground bunker sits technological advances quite literally out of this world.
In 1938, an expedition from Nazi Germany was sent out to take control of Queen Maud Land (known then as New Swabia) in order to supply whale oil for the upcoming war in Western Europe.
Theorists, however, claimed that after the war, the remaining Nazis in Europe fled to New Swabia and may have even kept and developed their advancements in aircraft technology. Yes, it is here they keep and dispatch their UFO technology, helped only by a superhuman race or aliens!
Strap in, kids. It’s time to talk about the messy, mysterious and my-god-this-is-weird-shit Nazi UFOs.
2010 was a pretty tame year by the decade’s standards.
But in late November, a meme was born. A meme that probably relaunched a conspiracy that once thrived in a postwar world: it claimed aliens paid a visit to the guys at the top during Nazi Germany’s heyday and offered up advice for advanced aircraft technology.
Ancient Aliens (season 2 episode 5) gave us innocent viewers the lowdown on the UFOs spotted during and after the war that were supposedly related to Hitler’s regime.
This theory clusters alongside other Ancient Aliens theories - that extraterrestrials have popped down now and then to help construct vast civilisations like Ancient Egypt.
Is it true?
Is it bugger.
But the theories and the evidence put forward frame a unique time in history.
What are Nazi UFOs?
The title of this theory is far from imaginative. The theory claims the Nazis were successful in advancing aircrafts and spacecrafts during WW2. But there is also talk of postwar survival of this technology, whether concealed at the North Pole or hiding in plain sight at NASA.
We know that the Nazis made vast strides in engineering and weaponry. In fact, the ‘evidence’ route forward by theorists relies heavily on accounts from high-up figures in the Axis countries.
Take the Repulsine: this was a specialised engine built during the war. How far was the stretch from this feat of engineering to alien-tech? Is it possible that an advanced race of extraterrestrials stopped by with a few tips and tricks?
Apparently so, as put forward by the claims of the Haunebu flying saucer and the occult-inspired Die Glocke (the existence of both of these aircrafts is, of course, highly disputed).
Nazi UFO believers should get some credit, however - they at least did some research. They got their facts right on three crucial pieces of evidence, before losing control of the wheel and skidding off the track completely.
Firstly, yes, we know they claimed New Swabia in 1938 for the purpose of obtaining whale oil and potentially for imperial pursuits, as well.
And yeah, they researched advanced propulsion tech. They even created a prototype of a circular-winged aircraft that looks preeeeetty similar to your run-of-the-mill UFO.
They even get right that there were flurries of UFO sightings during the war by allied forces.
But as soon as 1950, outlandish claims emerged, mere years after Germany surrendered and the Allies claimed victory. But we need to start at the beginning.
The year is 1944.
The end of the war is just on the horizon. The Allies have liberated Western Europe from Nazi grip. But a new, surprising threat is in the soldiers line of sight, too.
It was a cold, November evening. Lt. Fred Ringwald was in a night fighter piloted by a fellow Lieutenant. As they soared above the Rhine valley, the two american soldiers spotted something in the hills of Strasbourg.
8 fiery, orange lights were staring back at them.
They were sure, as any fighter pilot in that situation, that this was enemy aircraft. And yet nothing showed up on the radar. As soon as they turned the plane to prepare to fight, the orange lights had disappeared.
Many would attribute such sightings to combat fatigue, St. Elmo’s Fire (weather phenomena during a storm where glowing plasma appears near masts) or the fact that pilots would have seen many aircrafts clogging across Europe's skies.
But soon, the sightings began to spread. And fast.
In December, a pilot saw “5 or 6 flashing red and green lights in ’T’ shape.” in the skies near Breisach, Germany. They followed him but quickly vanished.
Days later, two orange glowing lights were spotted by two more flight crews.
They rose from the earth to 10,000 feet before tailing the fighters for approx. 2 minutes. They then stopped following the allied planes and disappeared.
“They appear to be under perfect control at all times”
Keith Chester
These sightings would become so common, they’d be given a nickname:
Foo fighters.
Scientists would go on to investigate them, later decoding them as advanced German aircrafts and weaponry. As they were only spotted by allied forces, it was likely they were advancements such as the V-1 or V-2 rocket.
But after the war, UFO sightings continued to apparently connect the dots:
Project Sign, an official US UFO investigation team, linked the designs of the German Horten brothers to UFO reports. The head of the follow up investigation confirmed some of their findings:
“When WWII ended, the Germans had several radical types of aircraft and guided missiles under development. The majority were in the most preliminary stages, but they were the only known craft that could even approach the performance of objects reported by UFO observers.”
Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, 1959
It was only after the war that accounts from former officials of the Axis regimes appeared to support these claims.
The first newspaper report forging a connection between UFOs and the crushed Nazi regime was written by a former Italian Minister of National Economy under Mussolini’s regime:
"types of flying discs were designed and studied in Germany and Italy as early as 1942"
But this doesn’t suggest aliens airdropped a PDF of flying saucer designs. We know that flying saucer aircrafts can and have been created.
A similar account from a Czeh scientist spurred on another key element of this conspiracy theory.
Die Glocke.
December 9th 1965.
All is peaceful in the small town of Kecksberg, Pennsylvania. That’s about to change.
Six American citizens in Detroit, Michigan, Windsor and Ontario witnessed a fireball score across the sky. NASA later claimed that this was a meteorite or a Soviet satellite crashing back to Earth.
UFOlogists weren’t so sure.
Many claim they saw a large object the size of a VW Beetle spotted with strange symbols, like hieroglyphics, being carried out by a truck from the area cordoned off at the crash site.
UFOlogists believe they recovered The Bell, an occult-alien-hybrid spacecraft.
Apparently, such claims bear a similarity to the designs of an aircraft laid out in a Wehrmacht document about a vertical take-off craft. And then Rudolph Schirever, the man claiming he designed it during the war, gave a statement the same month something crashed to the earth.
He told Der Spiegel that he designed a craft powered by rotating turbine blades. He developed it until April 1945 at BMW in Prague before fleeing to the Czeh Republic, as it is now known. 3 years later, he claimed the designs were stolen.
He thinks Czeh agents nicked his ideas for a foreign power.
Could it have been for an underground society of failed Nazi war criminals stowed away in underground base in Antartica?
(That was a mouthful.)
Many have attached their own take to Die Glocke.
Some believe it was anti-gravitational, others claim it was a time-machine. Some claim a Nazi colonel handed it over to the US military to buy his freedom, and a few even allege that the US forces forced Nazi scientists to build Die Glocke and advance it’s anti-gravity technology.
This stuff is pretty out there.
Quite literally.
But the last bit does fit actual history: US forces did bring over Nazi scientists to advance their space technology.
Postwar Theories
When historians began to reflect on the war decades after it ended, new ideas banking on UFOs followed suit.
In the 1960s, one of these most infamous theories was put forward in the controversial book The Morning of the Magicians.
It made numerous claims about the mysterious and fictional Vril Society which was based on a novel about superhuman-angel-alien beings that lived inside the Earth. In 1935, a German engineer fled to the US spouting claims that the Nazis did indeed have a society dedicated to finding the Vril.
The Morning of the Magicians claimed the Vril Society was a precursor to the Nazi party amongst other ideas. They supposedly created flying disc prototypes and had a secret base on the moon.
Oh, and about that Antarctica underground base?
It’s so the Nazis can vanish into the Earth and meet that advanced race living down there.
Jumping onto this New Swabia bandwagon was Ernst Zündel.
This Holocaust denier (*stares into camera*) wrote many books throughout the 70s claiming flying saucers were secret weapons released from this base. He even claimed he would attempt to locate the base and reveal the Earth was crammed full of aliens this entire time!
In 2002, he let slip that it was a big ruse to bring in more cash for his publishing company.
At the end of the decade, Migeul Serrano gave it a go. He was a Nazi sympathiser and believed that Hitler was the avatar (a deity on earth) of a Hindu god. Apparently he was hanging out with the hyperborean gods (Greek gods that are stowed away at the North Pole) underground until he was ready to release UFOs and bring in the Fourth Reich.
The last, infamous proponent of this theory had physical, real-life consequences.
A year after Serrano made his claims, Richard Chase professed that Nazi UFOs had forced him to commit numerous brutal and bloody crimes under threat to his own life.
Chase is one of the most infamous serial killers in history, earning the title the Vampire of Sacramento due to his reputation for murder, rape, cannibalism and necrophilia. These claims can be traced back to his schizophrenia which prompted him to believe prison officials were poisoning his food as directed by Nazi UFOs.
***
I think sometimes it’s easier for us to frame the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime within the context of something the horror genre would spit out. We’d much rather spin tales of occult rituals and far-out entities than admit actual humans did what they did.
It’s no surprise that following the war, a surge in movies detailing alien invasion emerged. It fit the fears of impending doom from a foreign, fascist government, a reality for many nations during WW2.
What do you think is the craziest claim?

Firewhiskey is not the best mixer.
So I actually wrote something for the first time in years? Talking on Jily discord about the dream of Lily Luna and the gang meeting her grandparents. So I wrote the possible first bit of a time travel fic!
Lily Luna Potter stood, hands on hips, glaring across the room at her unsuspecting brother. In the centre of the dance floor, she had an interrupted view of her brother’s bent head discussing something with her cousin Fred. She swung her head from side to side, attempting to get a better view of him between the crowds of dancing people surrounding her. Her snooping was interrupted by a well wisher touching her shoulder and thanking her and her family for coming to the event, she forced a smile at the ministry official she was sure she was supposed to recognise, and by the time she turned her attention back to her brother, he was gone. Sighing in annoyance, Lily made her way towards to drinks table where she could see Teddy stood surveying the variety of chocolate cakes with an interest that was better placed combatting a difficult crossword.
“You haven’t spotted James plotting have you?” Lily glanced to her left to see Teddy smirk before consuming an eclair in one bite. He swallowed before looking at her directly.
“You know I want nothing to do with this ridiculous feud the two of you have started right? I stated that from the beginning.”
Despite his statement to the contrary, Teddy has actually been directly involved in the prank war that the Potter siblings had started since Lily had arrived home Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays four months ago. James had decided to continue the feud with increasing escalation with every passing incident that didn’t leave Lily humiliated to a level that satisfied James’ mischievous streak. This increasing escalation meant Lily was constantly on high alert, knowing her brother’s whereabouts within three feat at all times.
Realising Teddy was going to be no use, traitor, she filled her cup with punch and walked to the entrance of the Great Hall. Tonight was the annual victory ball for the Battle of Hogwarts, meaning that the Great Hall was filled to the brim with students, ministry officials, old Order of the Phoenix members and DA members. The theme this year was “unity” and attendees had been encouraged to be clad in the colours of another Hogwart’s house that was not their own.
Smoothing her knee length emerald green dress, she spotted her father, dressed in navy, surrounded by a number of stuffy looking ministry officials. Harry caught her eye and winked at his daughter, pulling a face that made Lily giggle. Her mum was nowhere to be found, but this wasn’t surprising, if anyone hated these functions more than her father it was her mother. Both Potter parents supported the cause more than anyone, having the highest stakes in the outcome for the victory the ball celebrated. However, Lily had listened to her parents complain on numerous occasions that events such as these were not to celebrate the victory over Voldemort, but to kiss her father’s arse and gain political power. Therefore, it was unsurprising that after showing her face, Ginny Potter tended to disguise herself into the sea of Weasley redheads.
At 15 years old, Lily had experienced many of these balls. They were insufferable, everyone felt like just because her surname was Potter it meant that they could know the ins and outs of her life, private and otherwise. Tonight alone she had had three elderly women ask after her betrothal status, stating that their dashing grandson was looking for a beautiful young woman such as herself to have on their arm. These suggestions had started shortly after her thirteenth birthday, the first instance had caught her so off guard she had laughed in the ministry woman’s face so hard that her dad had to apologise so profusely when the woman started shouting about her indecent behaviour. However, Harry had later learnt the nature of the conversation and had congratulated Lily on not pulling her wand instantly. The requests had continued despite her father’s general aura of disapproval whenever an older woman approached her, however Lily’s ability to tolerate these encounters had surprisingly increased. Well, Lily mused, not completely unsurprising since Rose had informed her of her method of dealing with these types of awkward encounters. Seeing another elderly woman making a direct line for her, Lily turned her back and tipped a healthy portion of her “method of dealing” also known as Firewhisky into her glass of pumpkin juice for the fourth time that evening.
Lily looked around her, and short of darting directly out the doors behind her, she had minimal escape routes, she also didn’t trust her tipsy legs in the heels she was currently wearing to hold her up reliably as she ran. So she forced a smile as the woman approached her with a look of determination. Before the woman reached her, however, Lily felt two strong sets of arms loop around each of her arms and drag her back through the Great Hall doors. In a moment of panic, she started kicking out and before she could scream a hand grabbed her around the mouth. She was dragged out the entrance doors and into the chilling summer air, coming face to face with her two grinning brothers. Damn. Focusing on the approaching woman had left her vulnerable to her brother’s antics.
James Sirius Potter stood, head to two in a set of deep midnight blue dress robes to match their father’s, grinning like an idiot for having panicked his little sister to point of losing her composure. Lily glared causing him to only grin wider. Her glare darted to her left, eyeing her other brother with betrayal. Albus had not been involved in the prank war that was raging in their household, but tonight he had clearly picked a side. The traitor looked dashing in his deep maroon muggle suit. He still had his arms locked around hers forcing her to look into James’ eyes.
Lily rolled her eyes. “Has this not gone a bit far Jamie? If dad saw me getting dragged from the hall, we know for a fact he’d go into full Auror mode before you could blink.”
“You’re only saying that because you’re about to lose this war, oh little Lilykins! Besides, I made sure dad was thoroughly distracted before I grabbed you, I’m not stupid!”
Lily snorted, “Oh yes, James not stupid, how silly of me! Come on Al, you know you’ve picked the wrong side in this, let me go and we can get a thoroughly good prank on good old Jamie here.”
“Oi! Find your own ally! Now, onto the master plan!” James produced a small vial from his pocket and shook it in Lily’s face. “Do you know what this is my darling sister? This right here is an de-ageing potion, you thought you were so funny trapping my naked on the roof last week, well, let’s see how funny it is when little toddler Lily Luna goes running into that ball crying for her mummy and daddy!”
James was cackling, and lily had to admit that it was pretty funny if the person being pranked didn’t happen to be her. She was going to have to think of something amazingly embarrassing after this, he would rue the day!
“So open up Lilykins!” Lily rolled her eyes and accepted her fate, knowing they would not release her without taking the potion. With a sigh opened her mouth and allowed her brother to pour the contents into her mouth.
No sooner did the liquid touch her, did she experience the most painful burning of her life, coughing and spluttering.
“Shit James what was in there? Grab her some water!” Al let go of her arms and spun to face her, standing next to James.
“There’s some pumpkin juice in a flask in her pocket there. Open up Lil!”
Lily thankfully accepted the juice, to only realise it was her secret stash of Firewhisky. The combination of the burning potion still in her mouth alongside the burning of the Firewhisky, Lily spit the contents of her mouth, completely covering herself and both her brothers. She would have laughed if she wasn’t convinced her whole body was being set on fire.
The last coherent thought running through her mind, was how strange her brothers looked coated in a bright blue light.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much, you’re so sweet 💕 here’s a husband Fred and almost daddy Fred - I hope this is the kind of thing you’re looking for 😊 thank you so much for requesting! A bit late for valentines I know, but with everything going on in the world it feels necessary! Heavily inspired by OTH s8e15 because I love Naley and always will 💕
Harry Potter Masterlist
You’ve never really been one for surprises, always much happier knowing what’s going to happen so you can prepare appropriately. It started from when you were young, your parents learning early on that surprises generally sent you in to a bit of a tizz. This was usually followed by some strange occurrence that no one could quite explain. Well, until you got a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that is, and then everything suddenly made sense.
After having the biggest surprise of your life that day you’d learnt to adapt a little easier. This came in handy as you very quickly met and befriended a pair of red headed pranksters that regularly threw you for a loop, whether it be a trick wand you were picking up to an impromptu firework show. As the years progressed, it didn’t take long for you to develop a crush on the older twin, his personality a perfect balance to yours. He allowed you to let go and relax a little more and you helped rein him in when he took things too far. The biggest surprise however was when you found out Fred fancied you back. He asked you to the Yule Ball in your sixth year and you had the most perfect night with him. From that moment, the two of you were even more inseparable.
Still, old habits die hard and when there was an opportunity to avoid surprise, you made sure you grabbed it with both hands. For example, you knew that the baby growing in your belly right now was a little boy, no doubt with flaming red hair and a penchant for mischief like his father. You also knew that Fred always hid his presents for you behind the cereal in the pantry, giving you unlimited snooping access to all your gifts that he stashed away.
It was the morning of Valentine’s Day, and Fred had left early to go to work, leaving you with a kiss that made you breathless and a promise he would be back reasonable for you to have a night in together. At eight months pregnant, you really weren’t up for going that far anyway, preferring to stay snuggled up on the sofa in comfortable pyjamas. Once he was through the door and you heard the light pop to signal he’d apparated away, you got up off the sofa, a feat that took much longer than you cared to admit with your ginormous belly, and waddled off to the kitchen.
It took some reaching and precarious balancing on a chair that Fred would have gone mad at you for, but you were now staring wide eyed at the most beautiful pair of ruby earrings you’d ever seen. In a separate box you’d also found a gorgeous golden bracelet and a Honeydukes selection box that while lovely, you knew would make you sick so would have to wait until your little man had made his appearance. You bit your lip as you snapped the earring box closed and carefully put them back behind the cornflakes. He’d really gone all out this year and your heart fluttered at the thought.
The rest of the day trailed by slowly as you waited for Fred to return. The only bit of excitement was a visit from your sister-in-law, Ginny, her own bump much smaller than yours. While she was there, Fred also called in briefly to grab some lunch.
“Couldn’t he have just got something in Diagon Ally?” Ginny asked you incredulously as he zipped back out the door.
“Ah, but that way he wouldn’t be able to check on me,” you say, rolling your eyes. “You just wait. Harry will be the same.”
In truth, Fred’s usual overprotective streak had gone through the roof since you’d found out you were pregnant, with him hardly wanting you to do anything other than sit with your feet up. Most of the time this had got on your nerves. However, considering you hadn’t exactly had the easiest pregnancy in the world, occasionally it had been welcomed. You’d gone off most foods and regularly thrown up what little you had ate for the duration of it. Fred had constantly made sure you kept fed and watered as best he could, which mostly consisted of him plying you with Jaffa Cakes - a muggle snack you had craved and the only food that you seemed to keep down with ease.
Once Ginny made her way home in the mid-afternoon, you spent the rest of the day chilling out, catching up on a book and slowly getting dinner prepared for the evening, wanting to make it as perfect as possible for Fred after all the effort he’d gone to.
“Hey babe,” Fred said happily as he finally strolled back into the living room pressing a kiss to the top of your head as he passed, then moving to your belly, stroking it gently and pressing a kiss there too. “And hello to you too my little man.”
He pauses at your belly for a moment, and you can’t help the smile that graces your face at the sight. He’s constantly been talking and touching your rounding belly since you started to show; making you feel more loved than ever.
“Before I forget, happy Valentine’s Day sweetheart,” he says producing a single rose from behind his back. You accept it with a smile as he gives you a proper kiss, one that gets your heart racing. “Right, I’m going to jump in the shower then we can have dinner, yeah?”
You look at him smiling expectantly at you and falter slightly. The rose is beautiful and you don’t want to be ungrateful in the slightest, but your mind goes back to the presents hiding in the pantry.
“Yeah, of course,” you say with a small smile. “It’s nearly ready.”
Fred makes his way upstairs as you swallow past the lump in your throat. There’s something nagging at you, telling you somethings not quite right here and before you know it you’re back in the kitchen, climbing up the chair to look at the shelf again.
The presents are gone.
You feel your heart sink as you remember Fred called home at lunch. He must have took the presents then and given them to Merlin knows who. Bile rises in your throat as tears prick at your eyes and you slam them shut quickly trying to stop them falling but then Fred’s face appears behind your eyelids, smiling. Could he really do this to you? If anything the boy is loyal to a fault. There must be some other explanation. You run your hand through your hair and unbidden thoughts of how tired and irritable you’ve been throughout your pregnancy come to your mind. Had he had enough and found someone else? Was he just staying with you for the baby? Surely not, you could see the love he has for you in his eye, and his kisses were still so full of passion. You run your hand over your swollen tummy as you think back to the presents. He must have given them someone and that someone wasn’t you. Your heart feels like it’s shattering as you consider the possibility that it could just have been a present. But what if it was more? Thoughts swirl around your head back and forth making you dizzy as you try and figure out what’s happening.
“What in Merlin’s name are you doing?”
Fred’s voice takes you by surprise and you whip around too fast on the chair, quickly loosing your balance and toppling toward the floor. Your arms wrap themselves protectively around your belly as your brace yourself for the impact but then you feel arms around your shoulders as Fred tries to catch you. He half succeeds, ending up on his knees and softening the blow somewhat as you land on top of him with your legs resting on the chair.
“Godric, are you okay? You crazy woman! Are you trying to give me a heart attack! What are you doing up there?” Fred rambles frantically, not giving you chance to answer as you untangle from each other and he stands you up right, hands fussing over you as he looks for injuries. You ignore him though, relief flooding through you as you feel your baby kick your tummy, letting you know he’s okay. You grab Fred’s hand and press it to the spot so he can feel it too and he quickly stops talking.
“We’re okay. We’re both fine,” you breath and he takes a deep shuddering sigh of relief.
“I still think we should get you checked out,” he says seriously and before you know it he’s half carried, half dragged you to the settee to rest and has his head in the fireplace, flooing the maternity unit at St Mungo’s.
As it turns out, the healer you’ve been seeing for your check ups is on duty and she steps out of the fireplace shortly after Fred stands back up and comes to sit next to you, his hands fidgeting nervously. She quickly checks both you and the baby over, her wand making complicated movements over your stomach as she casts the various spells. Once satisfied, she leaves with a warning about being more careful and overdoing things. You barely listen though, mind still preoccupied on the possibility Fred is cheating on you.
“What were you thinking?” Fred asks incredulously once’s she’s disappeared into the flames, standing up to face you. “Why didn’t you just wait for me to get what you needed? Or better yet, use your damn wand? I swear you just about gave me a heart attack!”
“It doesn’t matter,” you say quietly, stubbornly turning away from him as you think why this all even started.
“Doesn’t matter? Merlin, you nearly fell off that chair completely! You could have seriously hurt yourself or the baby!“ Fred says,
Kneeling in front of you and taking your hand. You feel a twinge of guilt at how upset he is but you can feel all the hurt building up inside you ready to burst out.
“Look, I’m sorry alright,” you cry and you can feel your voice faltering but you hold back the tears as you take your hand out of his. “I’m sorry I was up there and I’m sorry that I’ve been tired and moody and stuff.”
“Wait, what?” Fred asks in confusion which just stokes the flames of your anger more.
“You know what, actually I’m not sorry,” you struggle to get up off the sofa, wiggling your bum to the end and pushing yourself up awkwardly. Out of the corner of your eye you see Fred biting back a smile at you and you glare at him. “I’m pregnant, Fred. Pregnant.”
“I know, darling. I did have a hand in it, you know. Well more a...”
“Fred!” You interrupt, having no time for his humour and games. “I found some things in the pantry.”
Fred stares at you for a second and you see the moment it finally clicks into place what is going on.
“You were snooping for presents?” He asks in disbelief, folding his arms. “I can’t believe you’re still doing that after all this time.”
“That’s not the point,” you say angrily. “They’re gone Fred. They were there this morning and now they’ve gone so where are they? Who have you given them to?”
“You weren’t supposed to see them,” Fred says and you see the disappointment in his eyes. He turns on his heel and promptly marches back upstairs in a huff.
“Don’t walk away, Fred,” you yell at him, before following him up the stairs. “I just can’t believe this, I really thought you...”
You stop short as you catch up with him and he throws the door open to your bedroom. Little rose petals are scattered on the floor leading to the bed which is also sprinkled with them. Magical orbs of light float around the room, making it seem to twinkle beautifully. In the centre of the room though you see the box that holds the earrings you loved and a tray full of Jaffa Cakes. You turn back to Fred, eyes shining with tears.
“You love me,” you whisper at him, voice thick with emotion.
“Of course I do,” he rolls his eyes. “You and my little man are my whole world.” He touches your stomach fondly.
“Sorry,” you murmur as he pulls you towards the bed, but he’s smiling at you and so you hope you’re forgiven.
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” he says, passing you the box holding the earrings and you open it and admire them once again.
“Thank you, they’re so beautiful.” A few tears leak out the corner of your eyes at the flurry of emotions you’ve felt in the last half hour alone. Fred seems to sense this and sits you down on the bed and taking your hand.
“Now, the bracelet and chocolates were for Angelina, I was saving them for George, although I think next year he should do the hiding,” he says half amused and you smile sheepishly at him. “I could probably steal the bracelet back if you want but I think these are more your cup of tea than the chocolates at the moment?” He gestures towards the Jaffa Cakes and you smile widely, shaking your head.
“No, Freddie. This is perfect. I don’t want or need anything else.”
He smiles at you and you lean in and give him a kiss. He threads his fingers through your hair and you get lost in the sensations for a moment but then Fred pulls back.
“Here,” he says picking up a Jaffa Cake and holding it your lips. “Eat woman. We can kiss and make up later.”
You happily take the cake and eat it greedily, fingers already reaching for another as Fred just laughs at you. You should have known better than thinking your man was cheating on you - he wouldn’t ever do that. You’re going to blame it on the hormones though and make it up to him any way you can.

Willow: Let's get this straight. I don't understand it, I don't wanna understand it, you have gross emotional problems, and things are not okay between us. But what's happening right now is more important than that. Xander: Okay.

top 5 nossos ships

Cut to the Action || Mission: Impossible - Fallout
After returning from a long vacation, I found myself with a little bit of free time. At the end of the block was a marker for a movie theater. Film review headlines were swirling through my head and the biggest one on marquee (and the one starting the soonest) was Mission: Impossible: Fallout, a series I often skipped in the theater. The last one I happened to catch featured the vocal tones of Fred Durst and his band of Limp Bizkit’s playing over Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle on some desert-like geography. I remember thinking favorably of the film, and still do, but it was about then, the early 2000’s, when I just could no longer tolerate Tom Cruise and any project he was a part of. I was too young to have a political or social reason for disliking him, it just came about naturally. Still, I was compelled to sit through his latest adventure as Ethan Hunt by claims of epic cinema redefining stunt work despite a lapse of attendance from the previous two missions undertaken. It could have been dangerous, going into a theater with the threat of boredom, unfounded plot twists, undeserved conclusions, but it was my choice, my sunday, my mission, and I chose to accept it.
I was, in the simplest terms, surprised. A step further, the surprises mostly left an unpalatable taste, similar to taking a bite into a gourmet sandwich only to find it also includes your least favorite jarlsberg. Number one on my list was the initial presentation of the film. The title-card sequence included a short, trailer-esq cut of every major action set piece in the movie, presenting the milk before the cow. Why do I need to get pumped for a movie you already sold me? This always feels cheap to me and tells me that the rest of the film might lack imagination. The second observation becomes clearer throughout the film. The viewer becomes aware that the film and its characters appear aware of the fact that you are watching. It is tiring to watch the characters react to or explain the same old drill or tropes its predecessors pioneered. To quote Henry Cavill’s character (the hilariously named August Walker), “People fall for this?” It’s the classic wink-and-nod at the camera, which might be fine once, but it happens multiple times across multiple films. The first M:I starring Tom Cruise was a mystery-thriller, very different from any film that would come after it. The rest of the film series was trying to outdo its predecessor by taking the action sequences to higher heights, leaving any semblance of story behind on the ground floor. This film might be the worst offender in that regard, the story quick paced and highly improbable, but nonetheless churns out exciting excuses for a Cruise to show off his Jackie Chan, DIY stunts. And the camera will never let you forget that Cruise is the star.
Oddly, unlike the other world-trotting scenarios the other films showcase, Fallout feels oddly slimmed down. The camera is much more focused on the characters than the settings, rarely pulling out for big set-up shots. This intimate approach tied with a barebones cast makes the film feel very small, which again surprised me. I can’t really say this hurt the film, but the intimacy doesn’t add any depth to the characters, but instead is used to focus on stunts, jumps, punches, and crashes. The film does try to make you feel like Ethan Hunt has love in his heart and his primary motivation is to his friends and allies, but it really falls flat. I just can’t believe Tom Cruise loves anything. Or hates anything. He just looks like a joyless acting machine, especially in his later years. The cast overall still brings their best, despite having next to nothing important to say. Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg play fun, wooden big brothers. Angela Bassett and Alec Baldwin are the divorced parents who also happen to run the CIA and IMF and use their kids as weapons against each other. Vanessa Kirby, Rebecca Ferguson, and Michelle Monaghan just round out the cast from femme fatale, lover, and ex-girlfriend. The story and cast end up being nothing more than vehicles for stunts.
This film delivers what it promises, amazing feats of skill and action. The camera does a great job of capturing every moment, and it is incredibly fun and imaginative. It kind of makes you wonder what new action this will inspire. But I almost wish the film would just jump cut to each action scene and skip all of the cheesy, unnecessary story. It has moments that might make you chuckle a little, but it really feels like anyone could have played these characters. The only actors that were able to flex their skills were Moose and Squale team, Cavill and Cruise. If you must see it, see it on the big screen. Otherwise, just wait for the next Fast and Furious film.
~* 6.5/10 *~

Batman Ninja (2018)
When talking about Batman Ninja, the only appropriate words are “Batshit Insane”. I’ll give the film credit for looking good and for going all the way with its ideas but as a whole, it never ceases to raise questions.
While battling Batman (voiced by Roger Craig Smith) inside Arkham Asylum, Gorilla Grodd (Fred Tatsciore) activates his time machine and transports Batman’s closest allies and most fearsome foes to Feudal Japan. There, the Dark Knight must take down The Joker (Tony Hale), Harley Quinn (Tara Strong), Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Death Stroke and The Penguin, all of whom have become feudal lords vying for control of the country.
I’m not convinced anyone involved in the production of Batman Ninja has any idea who the character is. I can look past the American knowing Japanese fluently enough to speak to the locals (quite a feat considering most of us can barely understand Shakespeare’s English), but do they not know that Bruce Wayne’s SECRET IDENTITY is Batman? Having trained as a ninja in present day, why would he need more training by the (conveniently located) ninja Bat Clan of Hida, led by a totally cool, super awesome original character that’s “sure to become your new favorite”? Did I mention the ninjas’ valley is shaped like a giant bat symbol?
The picture’s chief objective is to cram as many anime tropes into its 85-minute running time. Batman is a Samurai, then he’s a ninja. The Batmobile turns into a mechanical exoskeleton, the Joker fights with a katana, Poison Ivy gives her carnivorous plants in Kabuto helmets. Gorilla Grodd hangs out in hot springs, and the penguin dresses his trademark birds in period-appropriate armor. Bane shows up as a sumo wrestler, which means this film is not only blending the American superhero with medieval assassins, it’s mixing up Mexican and Japanese wrestlers. Think that’s crazy? That's just the start.
To reveal more about the plot would be criminal, as the only way to enjoy this trip into madness is ironically. It’s filled with flabbergasting surprises, the kind of insane decisions you can't predict. Then, it finds new ways to top itself, again and again. No aspect of this animated flick isn’t cranked up to 11. Even the character designs are so wild they become detrimental. Everyone has been given these super elaborate costumes. They’re too detailed to be animated by hand, which means the backgrounds are drawn but the characters are CG. It makes Batman Ninja look like a video game cutscene (a good-looking one), proving this was the work of mad scientists without supervision.
If Batman Ninja was a parody, I’d call it brilliant. In actuality, it's oblivious to how nutty it is. My advice? bring it to your weekly Bad Movie Night. You’ll be laughing as hard at the Joker at everyone's reactions. (English Dub on Blu-ray, July 12, 2018)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Archetypes and Hero’s Journey
“‘It is our choices… that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities,’” (Rowling 333). J.K. Rowling’s novel entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a novel shaped by the choices that its characters make. Do they choose to give into their fear of what is foreign and unknown, or do they take the time to explore it and understand it better? Do they choose to stand idly as their fellows are terrorized, or do they choose to try and stop it? Do they choose to fight for what is right, for good, or do they give into their own ambitions and fight for the forces of darkness? As each of Rowling’s characters follow their own paths, their archetypes emerge, further defining them. Perhaps most importantly, as Harry faces the obstacles presented to a novel’s hero, readers get the chance to experience his journey alongside him. As they develop a fondness for him because of his relatability, they can only hope that he makes the right choices and triumphs over evil at the end of the novel.
Harry Potter embodies the Hero archetype in Rowling’s novel because his status as an individual “distinct from” the rest of the story’s characters makes him easy for readers to relate to, (Vogler 29). At the onset of the novel, Harry is depicted as being different from the Dursleys because of his past—he was adopted by his aunt and uncle. Harry’s status as an outsider is accentuated by the fact that he is a wizard and the Dursleys are Muggles who fear his power, especially when he makes empty threats. At school, Harry stands apart from the other students because of the fame he gained after defeating Voldemort and his ability to talk to snakes. As several of Hogwarts’ students begin to fear that he is the Heir of Slytherin on account of his being a Parselmouth, he is ostracized and even feared by more and more of the student body. As Harry begins to feel increasingly unwelcome at school, readers find it easier to relate to the boy wizard. Their ease stems from the fact that they’ve all been in Harry’s position before—they’ve all been unwelcome in social situations; they’ve all been outsiders.
Harry is also the novel’s hero because he is “the most active person in the script,” (Vogler 31). He is present in every chapter and every major event. Furthermore, the novel surrounds his experience during his second year at Hogwarts; it is driven by “his will and desire,” without him, the novel simply could not exist, (Vogler 31). Harry is also the individual “who learns or grows the most in the course of the story,” (Vogler 31). His instructors continue to teach him magic, his allies teach him about wizard culture—the meaning of words like “Mudblood” and “Squib,” the ingredients necessary to produce Polyjuice Potion and its use, etc. At the end of the novel, Harry sacrifices his own safety and well-being in order to ensure that no one else is attacked by the basilisk and that Ginny’s life doesn’t end prematurely. As he descends into the Chamber of Secrets, readers notice that Harry is riddled with both unease and self-doubt. Rowling writes “every nerve in Harry’s body was tingling unpleasantly. He wanted the tunnel to end, yet dreaded what he’d find when he did,” (304). His fears aren’t unfounded—without the help of Fawkes the phoenix and Gryffindor’s sword, Harry would have succumbed to the chamber’s horrors. With the basilisk blinded by Fawkes’ talons and the sword to replace his lost wand, Harry managed to defeat the basilisk, but it cost him. The basilisk bit him and its blood was poisonous. Slowly, his life ebbed away from him—he had sacrificed himself for his best friend’s sister. “Thick, pearly tears were trickling down [Fawkes’] glossy feathers,” falling into the wound the snake had inflicted, (Rowling 321). Knowing of the great lengths that Harry would go to protect his friends, that his heart was pure, Fawkes used the curative properties of his tears to resurrect Potter. He rewarded him for his sacrifice and Harry was born again, a newer, stronger wizard who would finish the task of bringing Ginny home.
Three Mentors arise to help Harry on his quest. The first is his best friend Ronald Weasley, who continues “teaching [and] training” Harry in various aspects of wizard culture, (Vogler 40). For example, Ron shows Harry how to “de-gnome” a garden, explains that “Mudblood” is a derisive term, that a Squib “‘is someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn’t got any magic powers,’” etc. (Rowling 145). Hermione Granger is the second of Harry’s Mentors. Hermione can be classified as a Mentor as well because she crafts a Polyjuice Potion and explains its use. She also realizes what monster lurks in the Chamber of Secrets before anyone else. Although she had been petrified and couldn’t tell Harry directly, she had torn a page out of a book and scrawled “pipes” beneath the entry on basilisks, (Rowling 290). As a result, she was able to express her thoughts to her friends upon their discovery of the paper she clutched in her hands. Finally, Dumbledore is the third of Harry’s three Mentors and he certainly looks the part. He is an elderly wizard with a long white beard and half-moon spectacles, but it is not his appearance alone that makes him a Mentor. Dumbledore may be classified as a mentor because he teaches Harry a valuable lesson—that it is one’s choices that define who they are. At the end of the novel, when Harry struggles to view himself as a Gryffindor because of his similarities to Salazar Slytherin, Dumbledore explains what differentiates them. Although Dumbledore admits that they do in fact possess some similarities like “‘his own very rare gift, Parseltongue — resourcefulness—determination — a certain disregard for rules,’” he also expresses the idea that Harry’s choice to ask the Sorting Hat not to be placed in Slytherin made him a different person, (Rowling 333). Harry’s decision to voice his desires is what separates him from Slytherin and Voldemort, who chose very different paths for themselves. Thus, Dumbledore satisfies another aspect of the Mentor archetype because “giving gifts is… an important function of this archetype,” (Vogler 40). Dumbledore provides Harry with peace of mind because he explained what made Harry a Hero and Voldemort a villain. By extension, he also explains how Ron and Hermione’s continued support made them both friends and Mentors.
Threshold Guardians provide the hero with “obstacles,” which they must overcome in order to continue on their quest, (Vogler 49). Thus, “testing of the hero is the primary dramatic function” of this archetype, (Vogler 50). Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets contains two Threshold Guardians. The first is Dobby, the house elf. Upon their initial meeting, Dobby says “‘Harry Potter must not go back to Hogwarts,’” (Rowling 16). In order to make it easier to convince Harry to stay home, Dobby withholds Harry’s mail so that he will think that no one cares about him and the Special World will seem less inviting. By expressing his wishes and alluding to the reasons behind them, Dobby challenges Harry by forcing him to uncover the truth about why he hadn’t been receiving letters. He also forces Harry to find a way to defy his will. When Harry refuses to give in, Dobby bolsters the gateway leading to the Special World by making it more difficult for Harry to continue his journey. He accomplishes this feat by magically dropping Aunt Petunia’s pudding onto the floor, causing Harry to get into trouble with the Ministry of Magic for what they assumed was the underage use of magic outside of school. This put Harry at risk of expulsion. Dobby’s actions spur Vernon Dursley, Harry’s second Threshold Guardian, to tighten his grip. In addition to having all of his magical supplies locked away, Vernon “paid a man to fit bars on Harry’s window... [he] let Harry out to use the bathroom… Otherwise, he was locked in his room around the clock,” (Rowling 22). Thus, Vernon issued his challenge: if Harry could find a way out of his room, then he could go back to Hogwarts. To a Muggle, this was an impossible task, since Harry couldn’t use magic and had no way to communicate with the outside world. So, Vernon relaxed, knowing that Harry had no way of returning to the “accursed” school he and his family hated so much. Unfortunately, Ron sensed that something was wrong and came to the rescue with his two older brothers Fred and George, freeing Harry from his prison so that he could continue his journey.
Dobby also serves another important function in Rowling’s story; he fills the Herald archetype. “Herald characters issue challenges and announce the coming of significant change,” (Vogler 55). When Dobby insists that Harry should not return to Hogwarts, he issues a challenge. He forces Harry to defy him in order to obtain what he wants—the chance to return to the Special World. When Dobby begins to betray his master, explaining why Harry should remain with the Dursleys, he carries out the latter portion of the Herald’s description. Dobby states that there is ‘“a plot to make most terrible things happen at Hogwarts… this year,’” (Rowling 16). He alludes to the danger that awaits in the Special World, suggesting that what Harry will find at Hogwarts is anything but peaceful. Although life isn’t pleasant for Harry at the Dursleys, readers can expect that his life will be just as unpleasant at school. Furthermore, they can expect a shift from a relatively safe world devoid of magic, to one filled with magic and mayhem. It is obvious that Harry’s life is about to change.
Shapeshifters are “shifting and unstable… [making them] difficult for the hero and the audience to pin down,” (Vogler 59). Ginny Weasley wears this archetypal mask in Rowling’s novel because her personality is constantly changing before both Harry’s and reader’s eyes. When we are first reintroduced to her character at the Burrow, Ginny appears to be a shy individual who is infatuated with Harry. She constantly blushes around him and has a tendency to make a fool of herself in his presence. For example, during breakfast one morning, she “put her elbow in the butter dish,” after Harry asked her a question, (Rowling 44). At Flourish and Blotts, Ginny appears courageous when she defends Harry from Malfoy’s ridicule. After the basilisk’s first attack on Hogwarts, Mrs. Norris, Filch’s cat, is petrified. Most of the student body doesn’t care because they associate her with Filch and detention. However, Ginny’s softer side is expressed by her being “disturbed by Mrs. Norris’s fate” because it demonstrates her ability to sympathize and empathize with others, (Rowling 146). When the school begins to suspect Harry of being the Heir of Slytherin, Ginny’s brothers Fred and George begin to crack jokes about Harry’s affairs with his “fanged servant,” (Rowling 210). Ginny doesn’t find the jokes funny, suggesting that she is deeply upset by them and how Harry is viewed. Since she doesn’t want anyone she cares about to be viewed negatively, she can be described as both loyal and protective. On Valentine’s Day, Ginny reverts to the reader’s initial view of her—that of an adolescent girl infatuated with a boy she hardly knows, when she gives Harry a valentine. When Ginny tries to tell Harry and Ron about Riddle’s diary and the Chamber of Secrets, she appears both craven and uneasy. When she tried to talk, “no sound came out,” and when Percy appeared, she “jumped up as though her chair had just been electrified,” (Rowling 286).
Finally, when Ginny lies unconscious in the Chamber of Secrets, Tom Riddle explains how he fed on her secrets in order to grow stronger. When he reveals that Ginny stole the diary back in order to protect her secrets from being divulged, Ginny is humanized as she grows more and more relatable. Our ability to relate to Ginny is enhanced by the types of things she revealed to Tom: ‘“how her brothers tease her, how she had to come to school with secondhand robes and books… [and] how she didn’t think [the] famous… Harry Potter would ever like her…’” (Rowling 309). Ginny’s secrets make her more relatable because everyone has been teased or ridiculed, everyone has gone out in clothes that embarrass them, many people struggle with poverty, and many people have had fears that those they love don’t love them back. Thus, Ginny’s character and her secrets prove to be extremely profound because she speaks directly to Rowling’s target audience: children and adolescents, who are struggling with all of the same things as the young witch. With her last shift, she becomes “one of us,” an individual riddled with self-doubt and social problems. By having her act as the Shapeshifter, Rowling ensures that Ginny can speak to everyone, guaranteeing that they all feel as though they “belong” in her readership.
The Shadow archetype “challenge[s] the hero and give[s] her a worthy opponent in the struggle,” (Vogler 66). The Shadows in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are Tom Riddle and the basilisk. The basilisk is a Shadow because it petrified several students with its gaze. One of these individuals was Hermione Granger, the intellectual in Harry’s trio. Without her help and guidance, Harry and Ron struggled in their classes, trying to uncover the truth about the Chamber of Secrets, etc. If it hadn’t been for the page they discovered clutched in her hand, they may not have realized what was going on and Harry may not have satisfied his role as the novel’s Hero. The basilisk also proved to be a physical threat when Harry was fighting it in the Chamber of Secrets. This is in part because of its size and brute strength, in part because of the powers of its gaze, and the poisonous properties of its blood. Although Harry managed to slay the beast with Gryffindor’s sword, the basilisk had bitten him, causing “white-hot pain [to] sprea[d] slowly and steadily from the wound,” (Rowling 320). It made his vision “foggy,” (Rowling 320). If Fawkes had not been present to heal Harry with his tears, then Harry would have died in the Chamber of Secrets.
Tom Riddle fills the Shadow archetype as well because he was the individual who orchestrated the attacks on Hogwarts. He was the individual who first opened the Chamber of Secrets, unleashing the basilisk, which killed Moaning Myrtle. He also led to Hagrid’s expulsion from school, because the attacks were blamed on Hagrid’s pet spider, Aragog. His second wave of attacks, which occurred fifty years later while Harry attended school, caused several more students to be petrified. Riddle also provided Harry with a mental and emotional challenge because he used Ginny Weasley, his best friend’s sister, to gain power and obtain a corporeal form. With Ginny as his unwilling puppet, Riddle managed to minimize the threats posed to the basilisk and his power because “‘she strangled the school roosters,’” whose crow has the capacity to kill it, (Rowling 310). As Riddle gained more and more control over Ginny, her own power waned, causing Harry to realize that Riddle held her life in his hands. Thus, Harry knew that he had to tread lightly because Ginny’s life hung in the balance—if he made one false step, each of them could die. Thus, he had to devise a way to stop Riddle quickly and without magic, not only because he wanted to live, but because he didn’t want Ron and his family, whom he considered friends, to suffer the pain of Ginny’s demise. Finally, Riddle writes “I am Lord Voldemort,” forcing Harry to push aside the pain of their past history together in order to triumph, (Rowling 314). Since Voldemort killed Harry’s parents and harmed several of the people he loved, this proved to be a challenge because Harry knew firsthand what Voldemort was capable of.
Allies are often “friendly figures who fight [at the hero’s] sid[e], advise and warn them, and sometimes challenge them,” (Vogler 71). Hermione Granger is one of Harry’s two allies. She may be characterized as an ally because she is Harry’s friend who often advises him on how to proceed. For example, when Harry begins to suspect that his rival, Draco Malfoy is the Heir of Slytherin, she devises a way to question him. She explains that Polyjuice Potion “‘transforms you into somebody else,’” which would allow them to turn into Draco’s closest friends, (Rowling 159). As a result, they would be able to convince Draco to confide in them, which in turn, would allow them to stop him from harming anyone else. Furthermore, Hermione realizes that a basilisk is the creature terrorizing the school. She also assumes that the beast is living in the pipes. When Harry and Ron discover her theory by uncovering a note she held when she was petrified, they become more capable of stopping Lord Voldemort.
Ronald Weasley is Harry’s second ally because he is a loyal friend who fights at Harry’s side. Ron demonstrates his loyalty when he chooses to put aside his fear of spiders and follow Harry into the Forbidden Forest. After following the trail of young spiders, they encounter Aragog, who explains what transpired fifty years prior when the Chamber of Secrets was first opened. When Aragog’s children attack them, Harry manages to escape with Ron’s help and Mr. Weasley’s enchanted car. Ronald Weasley proves his loyalty again at the end of the novel when he follows Harry into the Chamber of Secrets to rescue Ginny and destroy the basilisk. Following a cave-in, he becomes trapped behind a rock wall and cannot support Harry with his presence anymore. However, he agrees to “‘try and shift some of this rock…so [that Harry] can get back through,’” (Rowling 304). His words lend Harry strength—they demonstrate that Ron knows that Harry can succeed in rescuing Ginny and defeating the basilisk. They also demonstrate Ron’s willingness to help despite his limitations because they show that he will still be there for Harry when he returns and help ensure their return home.
The final archetype is the Trickster, which “embodies the energies of mischief and desire for change,” (Vogler 77). Often, the archetype provides “comic relief,” (Vogler 78). Peeves is one of the story’s Tricksters because he is always wreaking havoc. For example, he dropped a “vanishing cabinet… from a great height,” destroying the expensive piece of furniture and giving Filch more to clean up, (Rowling 128-129). He also calls attention to the individuals who had been petrified by screaming “‘ATTACK! ATTACK! NO MORTAL OR GHOST IS SAFE! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! ATTAAAACK!’” (Rowling 203). Since Harry had been alone in the corridor, people began to suspect him of foul play. Thus, Peeves accomplished what he set out to do—he changed the calm atmosphere to one filled with fear and panic simply because he appreciated mischief. The Weasley Twins are also Tricksters because they do their level best to break rules and provide comic relief. An example of their comic interludes includes the time that Fred “bewitched [Percy’s] prefect badge so that it now read ‘Pinhead,’” (Rowling 212). An example of their mischief-making would be the time they fed fireworks to a salamander, causing a “spectacular display of tangerine stars [to] show[er] from [its] mouth,” (Rowling 131). As a result of their actions, readers can surmise that they strive to change dull or unpleasant moods to lighter and happier ones. Alternatively, when they make mischief, it would appear as though they strive to create a sense of unease because they derive pleasure from other’s discomfort.
The Ordinary World is the first stage of the Hero’s Journey. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Ordinary World is the Dursley’s home. It sets “a baseline for comparison” to the Special World, which allows readers to view it as the author intended—as being special, (Vogler 87). The Dursley’s residence contrasts sharply with the Special World presented at Hogwarts for several reasons. First, Harry’s school supplies are locked up so that he has no access to magic. Second, Hedwig is locked in her cage for the entirety of the summer, so he has no contact with the outside world. Third, the Dursleys don’t appreciate Harry for several reasons, including the fact that he is a wizard. As a result, they treat him harshly and make his life as unpleasant as possible. Finally, being that Vernon Dursley “paid a man to fit bars on Harry’s window,” the boy wizard experienced limited mobility and a lack of freedom, which kept him from doing the things he wanted, (Rowling 22). By describing all of the things that make Harry’s life at the Dursley’s unbearable, Rowling establishes what the Hero “[is] lacking,” (Vogler 91). As a result, readers can surmise that Harry will find all of the things he is lacking in the Special World—the ability to perform magic and to communicate with others, a sense of love and acceptance, and freedom.
The Call to Adventure is designed “to get a story rolling,” (Vogler 99). This stage suggests “that it’s time for change,” (Vogler 100). In Rowling’s novel, this stage of the Hero’s Journey occurs when Dobby comes to warn Harry not to return to Hogwarts. When the house elf reveals “‘there is a plot… a plot to make most terrible things happen at Hogwarts,’” the plot begins to pick up and readers sense that the story’s mood will become even darker, (Rowling 16). Despite Dobby’s insistence that Harry should stay home, the Call is issued because Dobby’s words allude to both the horrors and the adventure that await Harry at Hogwarts. In addition, it clearly states that the safety he experiences at the Dursleys will not be found at Hogwarts. As a result, readers come to the conclusion that Harry’s life is about to change drastically.
The third stage of the Hero’s Journey is Refusal of the Call, which involves the Hero “trying to dodge the adventure,” (Vogler 108). This stage was not present in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets because Harry was eager to return to the Special World. He says, “‘but I’ve got to go back… It’s all that’s keeping me going. You don’t know what it’s like here. I don’t belong here. I belong in your world — at Hogwarts,’” (Rowling 16). He refuses to give in to Dobby’s wishes and insists on returning to the Special World for another adventure because he recognizes that the Ordinary World is no place for him and that it’s slowly stifling him. Furthermore, Harry wishes to return to the Special World in order to protect the individuals that may be imperiled by the insidious plot that is unfolding. In sum: this stage of the journey isn’t present in Rowling’s novel because Harry feels obligated to use the information Dobby provided him. He needs to play the role of the Hero again in order to protect the Special World, to keep it from becoming as dark and as miserable as the Ordinary World he longs to leave behind.
Sometimes, characters “refuse a Call until [they’ve] had time to prepare” for what lies ahead, (Vogler 117). Often, this involves meeting with their Mentor who may give them advice or some other form of assistance. This stage occurred when Ron and his twin brothers Fred and George came to rescue Harry from the Dursleys. Although Harry accepted the Call by insisting that he return to Hogwarts, he had no way of returning to the Special World because he had been locked in his room. As a result, he needed to devise a way to escape in order to continue on his quest. Although he could not communicate with Ron, Ron sensed that something was wrong when he failed to receive any owls from Harry. When he arrived at the Dursleys and realized what had transpired, Ron “pulled [the bars] clean out of the window” with the help of his older brothers and his father’s magical car, (Rowling 25). As a result, Harry was set free. Harry also gained the ability to prepare for the journey ahead because he gained access to both Hedwig and his school supplies. As a result, he could arm himself with magic and communicate with Hedwig’s assistance. Finally, he regained access to one of his three mentors: Ronald Weasley, who would continue to coach him in wizard culture.
The next stage in the Hero’s Journey, Crossing the First Threshold, “is an act of the will in which the hero commits wholeheartedly to the adventure,” (Vogler 127). It is the point at which Harry cannot turn back. This portion of his quest transpires when he and Ron take Mr. Weasley’s flying car to school because they missed the train. As “the Hogwarts Express… streak[ed] along below them,” the boys managed to follow until they arrived at Hogwarts, (Rowling 71). Upon their arrival, the boys finish Crossing the First Threshold because they’ve arrived in the Special World. With little chance of escape, both boys are now immersed in the world of adventure and the danger that Dobby promised. As a result, readers come to the conclusion that Harry’s next venture is about to begin.
Tests, Allies, Enemies is the next stage of the Hero’s Journey. It is a “period of adjustment to the Special World” known for “testing” the Hero, (Vogler 136). During this time lines are drawn as both friends and enemies reveal themselves. This step on Harry’s journey transpires while he is at Hogwarts. This is due to the fact that he is tested in many ways. First, he is tested by his teachers in various subjects as they help to prepare him for the upcoming Ordeal. Harry also strengthens his friendship with both Ron and Hermione, who help him to uncover information pertaining to the Chamber of Secrets. Hermione helps by suggesting that they use a Polyjuice Potion in order to question Draco Malfoy about the Heir of Slytherin. She explains that the recipe can be found ‘“in a book called Moste Potente Potions… in the Restricted Section of the library,’” (Rowling 160). After devising a plan to acquire a copy, she brews the potion, allowing their plan to gain information to unfold. Ron assists Harry by questioning Malfoy under the guise of the Polyjuice Potion. He also helps by following Harry into the Forbidden Forest so that they can question Aragog about the first time the Chamber was opened. As a result, the group’s ties are tested as they put themselves at risk of discovery and their lives on the line. The Hero and his Allies are also forced to race against time—they have to discover who the Shadows are and stop them before more people are hurt and the school is closed.
During this stage readers begin to see signs of the Shadow as well because the basilisk has begun to attack the people of Hogwarts, petrifying several individuals. Draco Malfoy, Harry’s rival and “competition in love, sports, business, or some other enterprise” reasserts himself during this stage of Harry’s journey, (Vogler 138). First, he challenges Harry in sports because he was named Slytherin’s “new Seeker,” (Rowling 111). As a result, he will be in direct competition with Harry, who is the Seeker for Gryffindor’s Quidditch team. Furthermore, Draco’s access to the latest model broomstick, the “Nimbus Two Thousand and One,” gives him an advantage over Harry who uses a slower model, (Rowling 111). As a result, Harry’s skill will be tested as he is forced to make up for the difference in speed between the two brooms. Second, Draco’s view on who should be able to attend Hogwarts differs from Harry’s. Harry wants the school to be a safe place where everyone can learn magic, while Malfoy wishes it was populated with only pureblood witches and wizards. As a result, when the basilisk begins its attacks on the school, Malfoy cheers it on and hopes that it kills Hermione. Malfoy’s support of the Shadow’s actions adds another degree of depth to Harry’s problem—if Draco discovers the Shadow’s identity, Harry will be forced to contest Draco in the dark arts as well.
The Approach to the Inmost Cave lies at the “heart” of the Special World. It is an “intermediate region between the border and the very center of the Hero’s Journey,” (Vogler 143). This stage transpires when Harry, Lockhart, and Ron open the Chamber of Secrets and make their way inside. I have made this characterization because the Chamber lies “miles under the school,” (Rowling 302). The Chamber’s physical location suggests that it rests at Hogwarts’ core, making it the school’s heart. Furthermore, the Chamber rests at the edge of the Special World and leads into a subset, where Harry will face his Ordeal. He is willingly leaving the relative safety of Hogwarts’ familiar halls behind in order to challenge the Shadow in a place that is both novel and unfamiliar to him.
The Ordeal involves “facing the greatest challenge and the most fearsome opponent yet,” (Vogler 155). This event transpires when Harry reaches the end of the Chamber of Secrets and encounters Tom Riddle because Riddle is Lord Voldemort’s living memory. He was the Shadow that arose in Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, and he is the Shadow that haunts him now. Furthermore, since Harry initially failed to realize the danger Tom posed, he lost his wand and his ability to use magic. As a result, Harry is forced to find another way to defeat him. In addition, Tom is the individual who controls the basilisk, which presents another set of dangers because the beast possesses brute strength and “a murderous stare… all who are fixed with the beam of its eye… suffer instant death,” (Rowling 290). Therefore, Harry is forced to fight a battle on two fronts—a physical battle with the basilisk and a mental battle with Riddle, who will not cease to taunt him. Eventually, Harry manages to slay the basilisk with Gryffindor’s sword and Fawkes’ help, but “one long, poisonous fang was sinking deeper and deeper into his arm,” (Rowling 320). As Harry’s life begins to ebb away, he carries out the latter portion of this stage: “heroes must die so that they can be reborn,” (Vogler 155). In Harry’s case, he is reborn in the Resurrection stage of his journey.
Following the defeat of both Tom Riddle and the basilisk he controlled, Harry “lay[s] claim to [his] Reward” in the next leg of his journey, the Reward stage, (Vogler 175). Being that Harry walked away from the Ordeal with his life, he earned three rewards. Harry’s second reward was Ginny, who “stirr[ed]” following Riddle’s demise, (Rowling 322). As “they stepped over the motionless coils of the dead basilisk” and retraced their steps through the Chamber of Secrets, they returned to both Ron and Lockhart, leaving the horrors of the Ordeal behind, (Rowling 323). They had both survived and Harry was able to give the Weasleys a gift: the life of their family member. Harry’s final reward arose when the Weasleys discovered what Harry had done—they were beside themselves with appreciation. “‘You saved her! You saved her!’” Molly Weasley exclaimed, awarding Harry with the knowledge that he had brought peace and happiness to a distraught family, (Rowling 327).
The tenth stage of the Hero’s Journey is the Road Back. It involves “returning to the starting point or continuing on the journey to a totally new locale or ultimate destination,” (Vogler 187). This leg of Harry’s journey transpires directly after he receives his reward for overcoming his Ordeal. It involves his return to the entrance of the tunnel with his rewards in hand and his escape from the Chamber of Secrets with both Professor Lockhart and the Weasleys. “In a rush of wings, they were flying upward through the pipe… [then] it was over — all four of them were hitting the wet floor of Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom,” (Rowling 325). The Road Back occurs during this time because Harry returns to two starting points. First, he returns to Ron and Lockhart, who were trapped by a cave-in at the onset of his Ordeal. Then, he finds his way back to the Special World where his adventure first began.
The Resurrection “is the climax… the last and most dangerous meeting with death,” (Vogler 197). Since Tom Riddle stole his wand from him, Harry was forced to fight the basilisk with the help of Fawkes and the sword of Gryffindor. Despite the odds that were stacked against him, Harry managed to slay the Heir of Slytherin’s monster, but in so doing, acquired a fatal wound as the basilisk’s poisonous fang sank into his flesh. He could feel the poison burning him, “his vision went foggy,” but Fawkes saved Harry because he recognized him for what he was: a hero who was willing to sacrifice his own life for another, (Rowling 320). Fawkes cried into Harry’s wound, “thick, pearly tears” that reversed the adverse effects of the basilisk’s poison, (Rowling 321). Thus, Harry was “cleans[ed]… of the smell of death… and retain[ed] the lessons of the ordeal,” (Vogler 198). He cheated death and was purified by Fawkes’ tears as they washed the basilisk’s poison away. As he was resurrected, Harry was reborn into a new life where he possessed all of the knowledge he had learned on his journey—that phoenix tears had restorative properties, Ginny’s secrets, the events that transpired each time the Chamber of Secrets was opened, etc.
The final stage of the Hero’s Journey is the Return with the Elixir, in which the hero “return[s] to their starting place, go[es] home, or continue[s] the journey,” (Vogler 215). At the end of the novel, Harry “walked back through the gateway to the Muggle world,” leaving the Special World behind, (Rowling 341). By choosing to go back to the Dursleys, Harry returned to the place where his journey began. He returned home, completing the cycle of his Hero’s Journey. He also set the stage for the onset of his next adventure in the third novel within Rowling’s series.
Light vs. Darkness is the only symbolic archetype, “a representation of a specific person, act, deed, place, or conflict,” present within Rowling’s novel, (“Symbolic Archetypes”). This archetype manifests itself through the actions of the story’s Hero and its two Shadows. Harry represents the “light” aspect of this archetype because he fights against the forces of evil. He sets it upon himself to discover what is attacking the school and the significance of the Chamber of Secrets. He fights to find a way to keep the attacks from happening so that Hogwarts can remain open and everyone can feel safe. When Ginny is stolen, he descends into the Chamber and confronts the novel’s Shadows so that he can rescue her. He thrust Gryffindor’s sword “into the roof of the serpent’s mouth” and “plunged [the basilisk’s fang] straight into the heart of [Riddle’s diary],” destroying both Shadows, (Rowling 320 & 322). The novel’s Shadows—Tom Riddle, Heir of Slytherin, and the basilisk, represent the “darkness.” They are the embodiment of evil because Tom uses the basilisk in order to further his agenda. He uses the beast to petrify the students who lack pure blood, so that Hogwarts can be made to reflect the image of what Salazar Slytherin felt Hogwarts should be. The basilisk is evil because he is a tool: he inflicts harm upon the people of Hogwarts because he petrified several individuals and struck fear into their hearts; no one felt safe. Thus, within the context of Rowling’s novel, the “light vs. darkness” archetype can be viewed as the classic fight between good and evil, in which good always triumphs.
The inclusion of the “light vs. darkness” symbolic archetype within J.K. Rowling’s novel entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets enhanced the story by providing it with something that Rowling’s audience would find both familiar and easily recognizable. Being that the archetype embodied the fight between good and evil, it alluded to a comfortable pattern of occurrences and the story’s outcome where the “good guys” save the day. As a result, readers knew from the novel’s onset that they would not be disappointed or depressed by its ending because the darkness simply could not win.
I appreciated Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for its nostalgic value, but didn’t enjoy it as much as the first novel in the series for a few reasons. First, this novel included a large amount of recap, which I don’t enjoy. Second, I wasn’t particularly fond of the new characters who were introduced into the story—individuals like Moaning Myrtle and Lucius Malfoy. Third, while I liked the idea behind Rowling’s story, I didn’t feel as though it was executed particularly well in part because of her writing style and poor use of grammar, and in part because there was too much going on. There were too many subplots detracting from the heart of the story. With that being said, I felt as though it was a good novel to analyze for archetypes because it possessed a strong representation of each of the eight archetypes described in Vogler’s book The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers.
In conclusion, J.K. Rowling’s novel entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets contains at least one example of each of the major archetypes. Harry is the Hero because of his growth and the sacrifices he makes, Dobby and Vernon Dursley are Threshold Guardians because they try and keep Harry from returning to the Special World, Dumbledore, Ron, and Hermione are Mentors because they each teach Harry valuable lessons, Dobby is the Herald because he hints at impending change, Ginny is the Shapeshifter because our impression of her character is constantly changing, Tom Riddle and the basilisk are the Shadows because they embody evil, Ron and Hermione are allies because they help Harry on his journey, and the Weasley Twins and Peeves are the Tricksters because they provided mischievous energy and comic relief. Harry’s Hero’s Journey begins in the Ordinary World, where he is living with the Dursleys. It culminates in the Special World where he defeats the Heir of Slytherin and his monster before returning home.
