Puns and Vita

Remember how Vita names everything"Vita"?

Herself? Vita. (薇塔)

Siblings? Vita too.

Need a cute nickname? Hiding her identity? Little Vi. (小薇)

Herrscher deserves a more positive and wholesome title? Herrscher of Death and Vita.

Vita is written phonetically as 薇塔 but Vita means life (生). Herrscher of Death is 死之律者, Herrscher of Rebirth is 死生之律者, she just sneakily added "Vita" to Herrscher of Death!

So I was wondering where Vita got the name for the in-between place in Phosphorus from. I can't remember what the official translation was for it (was it Fairy Road?) but it just felt really random.

But today my friend Chibi pointed it out to me...

These are the same word! Instead of herself, she named it after her nickname for Seele!

By the way, the "elf" in "Miss Pink Elf" is 妖精, not 精灵. They both mean fairy but seem to have very different connotations.

According to my dictionary, Seele's 精灵 is spirit / fairy / elf / sprite / genie, basically a word for a magical creature but as an adjective it can also be used to mean "clever", especially for a child.

Meanwhile "妖精" is more of an evil spirit / demon / seductress /siren. It gets translated as "evil spirit / alluring woman" (lol) or a witch's familiar.

Both are used for "fairy", but Seele's has more positive, childlike connotations (makes sense since her story's all about a fairy tale!) while Elysia's a blink away from being called a succubus.

Sort of inspired by your Isekai AU, but "Purchased Powers" AU.

Basically, Chloe takes a big interest in magical artifacts either post almost being killed by several Akuma or post Pollen and starts trying to buy magic and magitech trinkets. Many are scams or fakes, or just don't work, but sometimes, they do, for goof or ill.

Being a haters exhausting. Here’s some things I actually liked in the recent chapters:

Seele and Senti! They are perfect and can do no wrong. They also make a surprisingly good comedic duo

Kiana and Durandal being sisters. This is one of the few times I’m actually really glad Mihoyo went down the no-angst route. I think it would’ve been really easy and cheap to have made Durandal resent Kiana in some way for taking over her life (I’ve seen other media do that), so I found it incredibly refreshing to have Durandal take the mature route, acknowledge none of that was Kiana’s fault, and immediately accept her as her sister.

The environment design. The moon base is a pain to walk through, but an absolute Easter egg hunt of tiny details. It’s also always nice to head back to the deep and saint freya. The project stigma space is also very neat to look at

Kevin and Fu Hua’s conversations. It might just be because they’re two of my favorite characters in the game, but I really found the scenes of these two former friends asking the other to back down or join them while having this silent resignation, knowing that nothing they can say will work, genuinely heartbreaking. Man, I just want my blorbos to be ok 😭

Seeing Siegfried and Theresa hang out. I always kinda forget that those two have been friends for a long time, so it’s nice to actually see that friendship in action (also, hoyo, why do you keep making these very fun to play male characters that are only available for one chapter)

The attempt to make project stigma more nuanced. Though I don’t think they really succeeded, I appreciate them trying to expand project stigma to more than just a shitty vaccine (for those who are still confused about what project stigma does, it takes everyone without an awakened stigmata and puts them in a dream. Those dreams are all slowly merging into the collective consciousness. Once they’re in the consciousness, the original person effectively dies and is reborn into a being like Hare {or at least this is what I’ve gathered}). I think this makes more sense than just straight up killing 90% of the population, and I can kinda get why people would support it or see it as a better alternative to death.

The shift to making Grey Serpent the main antagonist. So uh, past his introduction arc, Kevin just doesn’t make a good antagonist. He’s kinda disconnected from most of the main conflicts and the vast majority of the time we’ve seen him (be it him, his sim, or the Kaslana stigmata), he’s been on the protagonists side. Grey Serpent on the other hand- that guy has pissed EVERYONE off at some point or another. Even Seele is wary around him. I think if Mihoyo doesn’t want to do morally grey antagonists anymore, then going with the Disney villain is a better choice than demonizing another victim

Any time Li Shushang and Susannah are on screen together. Mihoyo really said “if you don’t know what to do with this side character, then make interesting by giving her a girlfriend,” and they were so right

Mei’s little amusement park space. I can’t really think of why I liked this section, I just did. It was fun

Since you said any AUs... what about a 'nothing bad happens' Pokemon AU? I'm unsure if you did one of these already. People don't die/murdered, sure there might not be 'perfect' lives (Like Zenitsu still being an orphan/adopted, Inosuke growing up in the wild, etc) but Tanjiro and Ayame do still have their families. Still in the same professions, but their families want them to be happy and go on a ~adventure~ Cue Pokemon shenanigans, meet the Gym leaders(hashiras), and fight evil organizations(demons).

A sadder one... Tokyo Ghoul AU. Who would be a ghoul, is someone a 'half-ghoul'? Are they all human... or is someone lying?

a pokemon au!!!!! much like anyone my age, i too have had my pokemon phase. that being said, the only pokemon game i ever played extensively was pokemon red, and i haven't watched a pokemon episode in over a decade. so...... the pokemon i assign everyone will most likely be first gen. bc that's who i am as a person.

Pokemon!AU

- i love the idea that ayame and tanjirou still remain as blacksmith and charcoal burner ngl

- u would expect both kids to choose charmander as their starter pokemon but nope! well, tanjirou does end up with a charmander, but ayame surprisingly chooses a squirtle

- or maybe not so surprising. akihiko had chosen the same.

- but ayame finds a vulpix all alone not far from okutama and ends up catching it. she has both of them out of their pokeballs, so she kinda has two companions that accompany her on the journey

- do gym leaders take apprentices? probably not, but ayame ends up taking a shine to kyoujurou anyway and he has a ninetales, so he helps her with training her vulpix a lot. she jokingly calls him shishou at first, but then it kinda stuck

- ayame and tanjirou set off on their journey at different times but end up meeting in asakusa anyway

- i can totally see zenitsu with a pikachu, but like ash's where they don't really get along at first. eventually their relationship kinda evolves into a "i'm the only one allowed to bully them" kind of thing.

- yes, zenitsu has an all electric team. his adoptive grandfather is a former gym leader after all!

- does nezuko end up joining tanjirou on his journey? yeah sure why not. she loves fighting pokemon, although her starter pokemon is actually a poliwag. keep working hard with ur poliwag, nezuko-chan!

- much like nezuko, inosuke also prefers fighting pokemon, although his best friend is actually a cubone that he didn't fight. they just found each other in the mountains and decided to stick together. i guess because they both have masks????

- tanjirou... hm. it's hard to say what his team configuration is. there is, of course, charmander. but he also has a dratini, a pidgeotto that he evolved from a pidgey, and a growlithe. he caught an eevee in asakusa with ayame and his evolved into a vaporeon

- ayame's evolved into a flareon. she loves her flareon, but she was kinda hoping for a vaporeon too... not that she would ever admit it outloud.

- ayame's team configuration is very obviously water/fire. she wanted it to be more water, but fire pokemon are drawn to her. tanjirou always jokes it's because she's a blacksmith's daughter. she has a seel, a vulpix, a squirtle, and a ponyta. the only pokemon she has that comes as a total surprise is her gastly.

- kanao has a clefairy!!! and also an oddish that kanae helped her find. i can see her team configuration as a fairy/poison type.

- genya...... genya and a mankey. his mankey is the sweetest mankey ever and it's even funnier when genya has resting bitch face. he also has a slowpoke and a staryu, and it was both those pokemon that caught ayame's attention when they met

- who would be team rocket for these kids????? like... i know akaza and douma for sure. oh i guess that would fit. maybe they're just obsessed with tanyame's eevees turned flareon/vaporeon

Tokyo Ghoul!AU

- i can see nezuko as a man-made half ghoul the way kaneki was turned, which still leads to tanjirou being very concerned and overprotective of her

- the higuchis... ghouls. yeah. akihiko joins aogiri tree and ayame has her loyalties with anteiku. obviously their parents die at the hands of the ccg and it's all very tragic. she has four younger siblings to look after and it's very stressful for her

- ayame and tanjirou used to be neighbours, until her parents were killed and she was moved with her siblings under the protection of anteiku

- that being said, i guess the rengokus would be ghouls too, bc of course kyoujurou needs to look after ayame. and hey!!!! free younger sisters!!!!!! (that's not how it works, kyoujurou - )

- it does mean that tanjirou has to work very hard with the ccg, bc it's the only way he can keep up with his half ghoul sister and his full ghoul kinda childhood friend

- maybe there's some sort of trainee program for ccg hopefuls and that's where he meets zenitsu and inosuke

- inosuke... could be half ghoul ig. but like the way the quinx squad are half ghouls

- (i'm very behind on tokyo ghoul: re i'm sorry)

- i think most of the hashiras would be ghouls actually. the only exceptions would be sanemi and obanai

- genya is also a half ghoul though, but bc of experimentation bullshit that killed the rest of his siblings. that just means that sanemi is even more protective of genya - almost like a guard dog

- listen i could go on forever abt a tokyo ghoul au u have no idea

- anyway! kagune! the higuchis are ukaku-types, while nezuko has a bikaku type. inosuke is koukaku-type, and he can make two jagged blades from his forearms - they're shorter than most that will fully wrap around the arm, but that also means he can move faster because of it.

- the kochou sisters are rinkaku-types, although kanao's is actually an ukaku-type like the higuchis. the rengokus are bikaku-types, although their ideal form - so to speak - is a nine-tailed form (i'm pushing the rengoku nine-tails agenda idc). himejima is koukaku-type, same as genya, which is why genya trains with himejima almost exclusively. muichirou is rinkaku-type as well, same as giyuu. they work terribly together though. it's mostly personality incompatibility issues. tengen is ukaku-type, which means ayame also trains with him a lot - and neither of them are happy about it. mitsuri is a koukaku-type! and bc of her muscle density, she's also faster than most koukaku-types (obanai thinks that's so cool of her)

- i can see the idiots squad coming together c of a rogue ghoul that's making it seem like the attacks are from anteiku. very very dangerous for her sisters, and tanjirou just ends up coming along bc nezuko insists that they help her. also bc that's kinda his first case in the ccg training program, so zenitsu and inosuke stumble along the investigation as well.

- okay i have to stop now or i will end up writing a whole fic about this and now i want to aaaahhhh

The Genie Team - Season 9 - “Siege of Chicago”

I do have a fresh idea for one episode of season 9 of The Genie Team… which I call “Siege of Chicago”. And this post serves as a list of important details and events about this episode. (note; I HATE it when my own ideas are altered or sugarcoated… and I HATE it when my ideas are completely ignored)

Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are possessed by spirits of evil, meaning that they have absolutely no control over their actions, emotions and desires.

Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are not bound by the rules of the genie, meaning that their wrists have no golden genie bracelets/handcuffs, they’re not connected to lamps, and they have free will to kill.

Working as a duo, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle create a category 7 super-hurricane with Chicago in the eye of the storm, and the hurricane covers the rest of Illinois, all of Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and nearly all of Kentucky, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri, and half of West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania and western New York (state)… and the hurricane has 450mph winds, super heavy rains and downpours, lethal floods, and F-6 to F-7 tornadoes.

Genie Amara and Genie Michelle attack Chicago in the middle of the night, and seel off the city by attacking it and killing tens of thousands (possibly hundreds of thousands) downtown and in the neighborhoods and surrounding areas around the city (like how the Decepticons did in Dark of the Moon, but much much much worse).

The category 7 hurricane is formed in the blink of an eye in the middle of the night, taking the effected states by surprise and resulting in countless more deaths in those states.

The tsunami summoned by Genie Michelle is as big, strong and fast as the tsunami in the movie “Geostorm”.

Matt, Inez and Jackie are among the 15,000 survivors in downtown Chicago. But they wouldn’t immediately alert Ellie and the genie team as they’re mainly focused on surviving the attack on the city… and they won’t alert Ellie and the genie team until the next morning when Amara and Michelle have completed their task at seeling off and isolating Chicago.

The New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route, Chicago & Northwestern, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, Gulf Modile & Ohio and Santa Fe engines are luckily out of the hurricane’s range.

Halfway through the episode, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle come frighteningly close to finding out the location of the Magical Emeralds.

When Genie Trista tries to use Dark Void on Genie Amara and Genie Michelle, the two evil-possessed genies dodge the attack and it hits me instead, putting me into a deep sleep and having neverending nightmares, resulting in Mina being out of the battle so she can watch over me.

Being possessed by a spirit of evil, Genie Michelle’s Deep Aqua Mirror has a dark special ability; creating evil clones of whoever is reflected in the mirror.

All of Chicago (downtown and surrounding suburbs and settlements) is flooded in water reaching 40 to 45 meters high.

When Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are sealed inside their lamps and are ridded of spirits of evil, the hurricane and the destruction to Chicago are magically undone, but not the casualties, and all residents in the surrounding effected states are not magically undone.

Out of the 2.8 million people in Chicago, 2,785,000 are dead by morning, leaving 15,000 people left, and Matt, Inez and Jackie are among those survivors, and most of said survivors are in the tall buildings in downtown Chicago.

Upon morning, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle are standing upon the two tall white attenas of Willis (formerly Sears) Tower.

With an emergency this big, the entire Genie Team is mobilized.

During the destruction spree, Genie Michelle uses her Deep Aqua Mirror to create swarms of demons from the reflections of Chicago residents.

During the initial attack on Chicago, Genie Amara uses her Space Sword to slice clean cuts through buildings.

During the night of the attack, Genie Amara summons lightning strikes that trigger 3-ton TNT-level explosions, with 10 lightning strikes per second.

Genie Amara and Genie Michelle aren’t actually fully revealed until they’re seen atop the Willis Tower the morning after the attack.

The hurricane’s heavy winds and massive downpours, as well as the 40-45 meter-flood in Chicago, cause the Mississippi River and the surrounding connected rivers to rage and and turn into a force of killer floods, effecting the states and settlements both inside and outside the hurricane’s reach.

Extra 1: before this episode, there’s a buildup to this episode throughout season 9 to where news spread about major cities and most other human settlements in India, China, Russia and North Korea being destroyed and erased one by one… and all human settlements in the Asian deserts, ranging from Israel to Mongolia are also destroyed and erased… and few survivors are left in China and Russia. Only Saudi Arabia is left unscathed.

Extra 2: this map shows the whole area that would be in the eye of the category 7 super-hurricane.

Extra 3: One way Genie Amara and Genie Michelle spread death and destruction outside the hurricane’s range is summoning meteor showers that destroy most of Seattle, El Paso, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Arlington, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Raleigh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and New York City.

Extra 4: 65% - 70% of the population in Europe is destroyed throughout season 9 (after China, Russia and India are dealt with) and Mount Vesuvius erupts at twice the destructive intensity of its eruption in 79 AD.

Extra 5: Before attacking America, Genie Amara and Genie Michelle have completed decimated the military forces of Russia, China, India, Europe, with all bases, factories, nuclear silos, military harbors, and air bases completely destroyed.

Wrapped in the fabric of reality that's been composed and copied by the remnants of a specter strength, Belobog in it's essence was entirely different from the home front they frequent. This was a realm where the strong could seize greater reward, either for the defenders or for the forces that intend to tear through that aching wound upon the fabric's border.

Explosions of hellfire, grated ice, to the seething, distorting nature of Quantum made the surroundings utterly inhospitable to most. As the mushroom like clouds arched to a haunting sense of prominence in the skies, clashes of steel of pure power would echo broadly and seethe with furious clashes of will as Caelus and Seelie alike were doing what they did best. Exercising might in the name of a better tomorrow. Just the thought alone causes a content, borderline demonic smile to situate on the Trailblazer's face as his body descends from the sky and back towards the hollowed halls of the Fragmentum's many echoes.

As their warped laws were woven into potent attacks, from lasers woven from Imaginary might, to the way those prior fireballs worked into meteors dawning a grueling scale of magnanimity as they were launched to the heavens above, death found itself eager to promise them a devastating end if they weren't willing to grasp it by their own means. Within that very moment, the Nameless's descending figure twirled about Seele's, almost looking at home with the promised devastation at the forefront.

Now why would Oblivion look so appetizing to his wayward appetite?

"Been missing this yourself? I can practically hear your scythe sing right now!"No differently than the bat that found itself producing the eager exhaust of a cerulean storm of power, thriving chaotically around its foundation enriched with Destruction's prominence. Reaffirming his grip upon the bat that prides itself with a lethal scale of gravity, those golden eyes focused on the decimation that lied between them and their enemies.

"Heaven or Hell, Seele!"

They could be the Fragmentum's calamity once again as golden and violet stars. Each decisive carve of the swath, to each soul crushing swing of the bat, these two minuscule size weapons in comparison would be the Goliaths to these mountain sized strikes. Hellfire being purged into a wailing sense of agony, ice being disrupted and turned to powder frost, only for those scalding beams to find themselves disconnected as they peeled through the imaginative fabric of those attacks.

For the beasts below, a torrent of colossal explosions would dot the quiet with an eerie, enchanting form of chaos. All of their efforts being shattered apart, only for those eyes to hone upon them with the conviction of conqueror's. For the finesse of the Hunt requires Destruction, and that very dismantling path could thrive in the essence of the force that turns the art of chaos into an artform.

Their descent would be the closing cover as their battle cries ring strong.

The idea was offered out of nowhere, but after some convincing you managed to get the brothers to go with you to a human realm sauna. This is how it went:

- you barely managed to get him to come because of "work" and "diavolo" and blah blah blah

- but seriously it took pretty much everyone to get him to come with you guys to the sauna, you mightve even convinced Diavolo to help out a bit with this workaholic dad

- enjoys the warmth and the dumb conversations that happen inside the sauna once it happens, specially since it seems to be that most of his brothers are also calm and relaxing

- when you bring in the vihta and start smacking him he ends up confused. "What are you doing MC?"

- ends up enjoying the stimulation it gices to him however. He pretty much enjoyed the experience

💛MAMMON

- didnt took much to convince him, all you have to do is sit next to him i guess

- tries to relax but i like to think he is a bit to energetic so he isnt a fan of just sitting and talking

- doesnt like the smacking either at the start but he grows to like it

- cant choose between wanting to come to see you in the bathing suit you were gonna wear or if it was for relaxation, it ends up being both

- do you remember that one episode of the anime where they go to the beach? This is his second chance at seeling pictures of lucifer, and its the second time he fails because of the steam messing up the camera lens

- convincing him might take a bit since he is a very self concious boy, it doesnt help much either the part where he can only wear a bathijg suit or a towel

- once you manage to drag him along with the boys you'll find him sitting in a corner trying to play on his DDD, only for the warmth of the room to ruin the experience.

- will end up joining in on the conversation once it starts to be about Mammon's dumb adventures

- the vihta does its job but in a very confusing way for him

- could go worse honestly

- went with the purpose to relax, somehow left feeling more uncomfortable than before

- another victim of not being able to process the smacking of the vihta, ends up not working on him and if anything stresses him out

- dont ask why it just happened

- ended up falling asleep during the conversatipn because of how warm the sauna is, no one bothered hin or tried to pull a prank on him because of the same reasln he fell asleep in the first place

NGE: You Deserve Love

This is an analysis based solely on the og NGE anime series and not the movie or rebirth series so I won’t be mentioning those.

NGE is a psychological horror/apocalypse story dressed up as a mecha. This farce is only totally dropped in the last 2, even 3 episodes. This can make the ending jarring and seem in cohesive, but ultimately my understanding is that none of the ‘plot’ really matters. Seele doesn’t matter, where the angels come from doesn’t really matter, and the final battle doesn’t matter. This is a story exploring loss, the need for connection, loneliness, and humanity. We see this through not only the interactions of the human characters but also through the angels.

THE HUMANS

The Children

A defining trait of all the characters is that they are lonely. The isolation from human connection is brought on both by the high stress apocalypse they all live in, as well as the personal demons they face. The characters all attempt to create bonds with other people, but are held back by their insecurities, fear of vulnerability, and past traumas.

Let’s start with Shinji, as the main character. Having lost his mother at a young age, and being abandoned by this father, he was never able to feel secure. Therefore he takes on a people pleaser attitude, constantly apologizing. His want for validation (particularly from adults in his life) causes him to continue to take action that he doesn't want to, including piloting the EVA. His self hate and insecurity makes it hard for him to make and trust his own choices. So he relies on others to guide him. When this fails, when he doesn't get the love and validation he craves he tries to quite entirely. But this often leads to the people he cares about being hurt. He's trapped between a rock and hard place.

Asuka was also abandoned, however rather than craving support like Shinji, she chooses to live for herself. She craves independence. She needs to know that she is no longer a child that can be hurt and vulnerable. This is largely shown through both her overt sexuality, and her piloting the EVA. She must be in control of the EVA, she must have power, she must be able to prove herself as the best, the strongest. Because inside she still feels like that hurt desperate child, and that is what she hates most about herself. Unlike Shinji, Asuka is brash and rude, and she expects others to give her the same. She barks and expects you to bark back, but can’t always handle it. 

Both of these characters are constantly looking for connection, with both their peers and adults. While Asuka often pushes herself on to people, out of a need to be seen. Shinji cannot take active moves to make meaningful connections, and will shy away from people trying to connect. Asuka hates herself and needs to prove that others love her. Shinji hates himself and cannot imagine that people love him. 

The Adults

One of the running themes in the show is motherhood. Typically it is the mother that is expected to love and care for the child, to raise them, show unconditional love, give unwavering support. None of the characters have had this, Shinji and Asuka search for validation that they lost in adults in different ways. Unfortunately for them, none of the adults present are suitable to be parents. 

The show makes a point to show that the adult characters are all more complex than the children. They have lived longer and therefore had more time to make mistakes, to get stuck in toxic ideals, to ‘be problematic’. They are not concretely good or bad people (mostly), but rather the result of people who grew up in a post apocalyptic world, trying desperately to stop the salvage it, while also trying to make their own connections. Like the child characters, their past traumas make it harder for them to be more open, vulnerable, and weak, to form that human connection. 

I am going to focus on Misato and Ritsuko, since they act as foils when it comes to human connection.

Misato being left as a lone survivor to a terrible accident has left her scared both physically and mentally. Before this she had issues with her parents, as her father seemed to abandon his family in favour of work, leaving her mother devastated. Misato doesn't want to become like her mother, abandoned by a loved one, and she also doesn't want to be her father, a slave to work. To counter this she looks for easy connections, but she never wants to get too close.

When her relationship with Kaji was beginning to feel too real, she began to find flaws. His resemblance to her father was terrifying, so she broke it off. Similarly, when in scenes with Shinji, talking about his insecurities or his want to give up, she is hidden by shadow. She cannot be seen as weak, she cannot offer comfort, she cannot be a mother figure to Shinji. Other ways her searching for easy connection is her drinking beer, or eating take out. She searches for the most basic ways to fulfill her needs, so that she can focus on her main goal of defeating the angels. 

Ritsuko is also desperate to find human connection without vulnerability. By fully closing off the whole world she can have no weakness, something which she resents in Misato. She views herself as above the need for connection in that way, and would rather follow in her mothers foot footsteps as a scientist and a woman. 

She loved and admired her mother, and hated her. She wants to follow in her footsteps but also would hate to fail in the same ways. She saw how her mother failed to actually mother her, and chose to completely reject that part of herself. Instead she cares for cats, and uses those as a surrogate to having a child. She continues her mothers work as a scientist, constantly striving to improve. And when it comes to the ‘woman’ that her mother was, she knew a stubborn woman who focused solely on one man. So Ritsuko also focused on him, to the point of giving up her cat to her grandmother. Both women tried to create an easy connection with him, both felt that they were his equal, and that they found the one connection that mattered. When it was proven to them that they were a second (third) woman this caused them both to break down. For Ritsuko this meant that even though she closed off the whole world, except for one man, she was still too vulnerable. And her only response was to completely shut down. Because she had no one else.

All of the characters are constantly searching for this connection, trying to show affection without getting hurt. Trying to make sense of the end of the world while also making sense of interpersonal relationships. Their own inner demons getting in the way of honest connection. 

Rei

As a clone Rei is a particular case. She is aware that she is not a ‘person’, she isnt meant for human connection. Her isolation is so ingrained into her, planned before she is even ‘born’ so she feels no need to care for anyone except Ikari. She latches onto him, would do anything for him, and has no value in her life because she is aware that she is not real. 

However, she still has a human source, Shinjis mother. A human person, who also needed human connection. Rei, when given the chance, does care for people. Shinji is the first person to see her as a peer, and to treat her with kindness. With this start of forming connections, she begins to feel more human, to develop a further need to connect. Even if it's hard to fully separate from the man who created her.

THE ANGELS

The angels act as a foil to the human need for connection. While all of the human characters are lonely and searching for connection with each other, the angels are also lonely and trying to learn what that even means. 

There is no scene where the angels are working together, they are solitary, all having the same goal of reaching Adam, but incapable of planning together to achieve it. They instead try to create connection to humans, trying to bond and understand them, without knowing that their methods are harmful. 

I believe this can be first seen with the 12th angel. When Shinji is absorbed into the EVA, it is safe to say that the angel was able to understand the merging of human and EVA. This connection allowed Shinji to control the EVA to break free of the angel's shadow. The following month where Shinji is trapped within his EVA, is our first insight into what the human instrumentality project will be like, as well as the goals of the angels. 

Since angels cannot connect to each other, the 15th angel attempts to create connection by forcing itself into Asukas mind. It wants to understand her, her emotions, her thoughts, her connections, her love. For her this is a painful experience, akin to rape. She feels dirtied after it. But the attack is a beam of light, with holy music playing, what should be a calming experience. I believe it is fair to say that the angel cannot understand that it is putting her through pain, as it cannot understand any human experiences. Angels are incapable of understanding their own feelings/experiences/wants, and try to use humans as a study from which they can learn. 

The following angel confronts Rei about her loneliness. Instead of breaking into her mind through light, it directly entered her body. While talking with her, it questioned what loneliness was, trying to understand its own pain and isolation through understanding hers. Its solution is to merge with Rei, as it believes this would solve both problems. 

However, when she refuses, the angel then tries to find another source of connection. Rei cares about Shinji, as both a clone of his mother, and a friend as her own person. The angel can see that this connection is something that she finds precious and tries to take it for itself, as it cannot understand why Shinji wouldn’t feel the same. It cannot understand how complex human connections are, that it cannot simply take Reis form. However, it has learned what pain is, and how to communicate its own pain. As seen when Shinji attacks it. Whether this pain is physical or emotional doesn't matter, because it is the first pain that the angel could express.

The angels discovering what loneliness is acts as a way for the human pilots to begin to explore their own isolation in more depth. For better or worse.

THE FINAL MESSENGER

Our introduction to the final angel is him singing. He takes a human form, can fully communicate to other humans, and doesn’t immediately attack them. This is such a contrast to all other angels that it isn't immediately clear that he even is an angel. Kaworu's first words are (as per the netflix english subtitles)

“Arent songs great? Songs enrich the heart. They're the crowning achievement of Lilin culture” 

He loves humans, human culture, human lives, and the human world. He is the first angel who is able to show this. His ability to understand humans allows him to form human connections, and he does so with Shinji. 

Kaworu loved Shinji. He would seek out Shinji, take time to bond and communicate with him, and help Shinji open up. He wanted to be close with Shinji, and knew how to be gentle in ways that no other human or angel could. He was patient, because he had time. And Shinji was able to open up to him more than with any other character. Shinji  was able to take the initiative to ask to stay with him, to try and form that connection.

All the human characters are struggling with their own demons, with an apocalyptic world. The whole earth is at war and Shinji is in the front lines, surrounded by adults who may want to help him but ultimately can't. Saving everyone is a higher priority to saving one kid, especially when that kid is your strongest soldier. Throughout the series Shinji is given conditional love. It is only when he pilots the EVA, defeats the angels and saves the day that people give him validation. Then comes this boy, who is gentle and kind, who listens. And it's easy, its comfort, its understanding and unconditional love, and its exactly what Shinji has needed for the whole series. 

But as a messenger he could never stay, he's temporary and by the end of the episode he understands this. He still is driven to ‘Adam’, he has a mission, but instead he is confronted with Lilith. Kaworu understands that humans and angels cannot live together in harmony, only one can survive. Both Adam and Litlith were made in god's image, but only Adam could stay in the garden of Eden. Death and Life hold equal value to Kaworu, so he doesn't mind the sacrifice, he would rather die to protect humans, to protect Shinji. He can  also understand that this is difficult, this is murder, this is killing a friend. So he says “thank you” and he waits.

In other episodes when in a battle, Shinji is constantly being yelled at, told what to do, under constant pressure. But here there is just the same patient understanding that Kaworu has always shown him. No rush for him to take action, just time to process and grieve. Because Kaworu knows Shinji will make the hard choice and he waits, and he smiles, and he continues to love Shinji. 

The final angel came down as a messenger and said

“You are important. 

I want to talk to you, to know you. 

You are in pain, you are fragile and should be protected. 

You are worthy of my affection. 

I like you. I love you. I was born just so that I could meet you. 

Our kind cannot survive together, one of us must die. And you deserve to live. 

I will take this burden of death because you deserve a future. 

I am glad I could meet you, thank you. 

I know this is hard, and I know you need time. I will wait.

Thank you.”

That was the last message to humanity.

And because Shinji is human he says back

“We are the same. I love you too. If only one of us could have lived it should have been you. You are better than me. You should have survived.”
