New Zealand - Cap Removed for Fishing Crew Work Visas Starting December 2024
New Zealand - New Requirement For Cargo Ship Crew And Passengers
19 November 2024 The government will lift the annual limit on the number of foreign fishing crew members allowed to work in New Zealand, effective December 2, 2024. Previously, only 940 foreign workers could obtain a Fishing Crew Work Visa each year. With the cap removed, employers can now hire more overseas workers to address skill shortages on fishing vessels when there aren't enough qualified New Zealanders available. Fishing Crew Work Visa Overview Purpose: Allows you to work as a crew on a fishing vessel in New Zealand waters. Requirements: You must have a job offer and the necessary skills and experience. Length of Stay: Up to 12 months. Cost: Starting from NZD $1,355. Processing Time: 80% of applications are processed within 5 weeks. What You Can Do with This Visa Work on a fishing vessel in New Zealand waters. You must work only for the employer who offered you the job. Approval in Principle for Employers Employers wishing to hire seven or more overseas crew members for a single vessel must obtain an Approval in Principle (AIP) from Immigration New Zealand (INZ). This approval is granted only if there are not enough New Zealanders available for the work. Validity: Initial 12 months. Cost: Starting from NZD $6,610. Processing Time: 80% of applications are processed within 4 months. Key Points for Employers Crew Numbers: Apply for the maximum number of foreign crew needed at one time. Crew changes don't count towards any cap. Less Than Seven Crew: If hiring fewer than seven foreign crew members, you don't need an AIP but must complete additional forms and support the visa application similarly to employers with an AIP. Industry Impact The removal of the cap is expected to provide immediate relief to the seafood industry, which employs over 12,000 people and earned over $2 billion in exports for the year ending June 2024. Notably, 89% of the seafood workforce consists of New Zealand workers. Additional Information The current allocation process for the upcoming cap year (October 31, 2024, to October 31, 2025) has been paused in collaboration with industry stakeholders. Behind the Scenes of System76: Sales Team
The System76 Behind the Scenes series aims to give readers an inside look at the people behind our mission. This week, we spoke with VP of Sales Sam Mondlick about the challenges of conducting business during a pandemic, and how long it’ll take the Sales Team to make a certain blog author a millionaire.
You know. The important things.
Take a moment to describe the different functions of the Sales Team.
The Sales Team itself is currently made up of two different positions. The Customer Experience Specialist (CES) is the first line of conversation with System76 with regards to anything order-related. Their job is to make your process from purchase to shipment as easy as possible and provide you with as much information as you might need, such as giving status updates about orders or answering questions that may have arisen.
The other position within Sales is Account Management. They’re the people you talk to from first inquiry to System76 about products. These guys help anyone, from my 80-year-old grandma who’s looking to transition from Windows to Linux, to Fortune 50 companies. They deal with a wide variety of customer base, so they’re pretty much experts in getting the customer what they need.
Then there’s the Product Management side of Sales. The Product Manager stays up to date on all-new technology, and then informs and directs the team. The position was built to ensure System76 is at the forefront of new and exciting technologies, whether that’s within the Thelio product line or in the form of updates that come to our laptops. And that could be as simple as tracking memory updates from DDR4 to DDR5, or with PCIe 3.0 updating to PCIe 4.0. For things like that we’ll track and update products throughout their lifetime.
What is the guiding principle for how the System76 Sales Team operates?
The Sales Team philosophy we push is what I call, “Consultative Sales.” We’re here to be an assistant to the user in order to get them the right product for the job; we’re not going to upgrade you for the sake of upgrading. The team is there to understand what you want to accomplish so that they can get you the right machine with the optimal performance for your use case.
What factors into the decision to introduce a new product?
There’s quite a few factors internally that we’ll go through. Looking at our product line we ask ourselves, is there something that’s missing from it? And if we do find something, what are the benefits to it? How is it going to make us as a company better, and us as a provider of Linux-based technologies the right fit for our customers?
For the Lemur Pro, battery life had always been a high-value item for our customer base. Before the Lemur Pro and Darter Pro were introduced about 2 years ago, the average battery life on a System76 computer was about 3-5 hours. The ability to introduce a product with a higher battery wattage allowed us to extend battery life almost threefold. That value is really what drives a product forward.
What is your team’s background with Linux?
A lot of the team members have a background in Linux as users. That’s what we tend to typically hire and bring on. They are apt in review and understanding, and helping customers that have specific tasks and needs within the Linux environment. Charles was using Raspberry Pis in order to do some cool things, and Bradley used Ubuntu even before he was hired. The same can be said for Jeremy and John. They all believe that Linux is the right tool for people, and they showcase that for incoming customers. Even if they’re not tech-savvy within Linux, there’s a background there with using it and seeing it in the wild.
What challenges did the pandemic present when it first started?
I think at the very beginning, the biggest challenge for us was the loss of the team camaraderie. A lot of Sales is personal relationships, and the team feeds off of each other, so having everyone in the same area was a huge benefit pre-pandemic.
In the first month or so after it started, there were definitely challenges with productivity and communication because Sales works a lot with Engineering, Support, and other departments in order to give the customers the information they need to make an educated decision, or to update them on the status of their order.
But, I think one of the best tools we have is our employee messaging client. That was already ingrained in us as something that was used pre-pandemic that really started to show its value post-pandemic, especially with the team members being in different homes—and in some cases, different states. It allowed us to provide our staff with as much as they needed to make their environment feel like they were still in an office, still able to get the camaraderie, and still able to get almost the same instantaneous response as they would in the office, but now done remote.
Our ability to put tech first, especially within Sales and Service, is one of the things we do really well. We never throw people at a problem. By that I mean we don’t delegate a problem up the chain to solve it. Instead we work for a solution, and our people evolve into that solution. From my viewpoint, we’ve established that a remote environment is as productive as an in-person environment, which has opened up the door for System76 to grow. Instead of working within a local pool, we’ve now moved to the ocean. Whereas you used to have to hire and work to provide resources for new hires to move to Denver so they can work with the team, now we can bring on team members from pretty much anywhere on the globe to come help make System76 better.
System76 has seen steady growth in the past year despite drastic political and economic changes. What do you attribute the success to?
I think we’ve matured as an organization. We have introduced products and product lines that are meeting and exceeding a lot of different customer requirements. When I look at our desktop line from when I started seven years ago, our options were the Ratel, the Wild Dog, the Leopard, and the Sable. With production moving in-house and the introduction of Thelio in the last two and a half years, keeping in mind both Intel and AMD, we’ve gone from offering a four-desktop solution to nine.
Laptop and desktop quality has also increased in the last seven years, and a lot of that has to do with what we’ve done in our new manufacturing facility. We have made leaps and bounds with regards to what we’re doing with software engineering now. There’s a huge demand for what our Software Engineering Team has done, driven by Jeremy and our open firmware/open EC that speak to a lot of people. Companies are looking at an open source solution instead of proprietary because they want more control over what their team and their organization are doing.
One of the things we’ve noticed is that our business clients have grown. There’s significantly more support and drive from both the end user and the corporate side to make it so Linux is a valued and desired solution for their teams. Today, I can probably put a Windows 10 machine next to my Pop!_OS 20.10 machine and accomplish everything in the same amount of time or faster. Maybe I’m not using the same applications, but anything I as a businessperson could do within Windows, I can now do with Pop!_OS or Ubuntu. The Linux ecosystem is continuously changing, and that only helps us as a company.
You’ve been at System76 for quite a while. What’s it been like watching the company grow?
It’s amazing. When I started at the company, I was really the first Sales-oriented person. I was the 8th employee at the time, and now I’m the 5th-oldest employee of System76 out of over 50 employees. So it’s huge, man.
When you look at a lot of big corporations, change is hard to make happen. It’s looked at as too different, too risky. But here, change is really something we strive for. We work to be different, to be new, to figure out new ways to help our customers or create solutions to help them, or figure out ways that can change us for the better that you just typically wouldn’t see from a corporation.
What was your favorite moment?
When I first looked at System76, back when we were only offering Ubuntu, I saw the beginning of something very similar to another major player. Very grassroots, very much specialized and hardware-specific. They also created their own operating system, so when I interviewed in 2014, I made comments during my interview with Carl that I expected us to probably produce our own operating system as well. I thought that would be our endgame as a company. At that time, and Carl might contradict my memory on this, but I remember he didnt think that would ever happen. And then in October 2017, we released the first version of Pop!_OS. That made everything come kind of full-circle for me.
The following year, we brought hardware inside in order to make it the best that we could. So in three short years from me starting, we took what we were doing and elevating it to something that only a handful of companies do, and do well. Our potential is really limitless from what I’ve seen so far, and it’s very apparent with what we’ve done with Pop!_OS since its release, as well as where we’ve taken Thelio. I bet you we never thought we would’ve implemented something like i3 tiling into Pop!_OS. I really goes back to how we view change. We embrace it. We see it as trying to do something better than we did before. Carl and the Engineering Team view software as always being about revision, and we bring that philosophy back to hardware and back to the company as a whole.

Laser and Light Treatment of Acquired and Congenital Vascular Lesions
IPL treatment of PWS
IPL devices are broadband filtered xenon flashlamps that work based on the principles of selective photothermolysis. The emission spectrum of 515–1200 nm is adjusted with the use of a series of cut-off filters, and the pulse duration ranges from approximately 0.5 to 100 msec, depending on the technology. The first commercial system, Photoderm VL (Lumenis, Yokneam, Israel) became available in 1994, and has been used to treat vascular anamolies. Another, IPL Technology (Danish Dermatologic Development [DDD] Hoersholm, Denmark) with a dual mode light filtering has also been used to treat PWS. Many other IPL system have recently been developed, and the appropriate parameters for congenital vascular lesions are being developed. The IPL has been used successfully to treat PWS (Fig. 39.7),78–80 but pulsed dye laser remains the treatment of choice.
IPL technology has also been used to treat pulsed dye laser-resistant PWS. In the study by Bjerring and associates seven of 15 patients achieved over 50% lesional lightening after four IPL treatments. Most of these patients had lesions involving the V2 dermatome (medial cheek and nose), which are relatively more difficult to lighten. Six of seven of these patients showed over 75% clearance of their PWS. A 550–950-nm filter was used with 8–30-msec pulse durations and fluences of 13–22 J/cm2 to achieve tissue purpura. The 530–750-nm filter can also be used with double 2.5-msec pulses, with a 10-msec delay and fluence of 8–10 J/cm2. Epidermal cooling was not required. Treatment resulted in immediate erythema and edema, and occasional crusting. Hypopigmentation was observed in three patients, hyperpigmentation in one patient, and epidermal atrophy in one patient.
The basics of body fat
Let’s start with the basics. Not all fat is created equal. We have two distinct types of fat in our bodies: subcutaneous fat (the kind that may roll over the waistband of your pants) and visceral fat (the stuff that lines your organs and is associated with diabetes and heart disease).
From here on out, when we refer to fat, we are talking about subcutaneous fat, as this is the type of fat that cryolipolysis targets. A recent study showed that the body’s ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases with age, which means we are fighting an uphill battle with each birthday we celebrate.
From popsicles to freezing fat
Cryolipolysis machine — which literally translates into cold (cryo) fat (lipo) destruction (lysis) — was invented, in part, by observing what can happen when kids eat popsicles. No kidding here. The cofounders of this process were intrigued by something called “cold-induced fat necrosis” that was reported to occur after young children ate popsicles that were inadvertently left resting on the cheek for several minutes. Skin samples taken from pediatric patients like these showed inflammation in the fat, but normal overlying skin. Thus, it appeared that fat may be more sensitive to cold injury that other tissue types.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Coolplas Fat Freeze Machine uses rounded paddles in one of four sizes to suction your skin and fat “like a vacuum,” says Roostaeian. While you sit in a reclined chair for up to two hours, cooling panels set to work crystallizing your fat cells. “It’s a mild discomfort that people seem to tolerate pretty well," he says. "[You experience] suction and cooling sensations that eventually go numb.” In fact, the procedural setting is so relaxed that patients can bring laptops to do work, enjoy a movie, or simply nap while the machine goes to work.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Above all, emphasizes Roostaeian, CoolSculpting is “for someone who is looking for mild improvements,” explaining that it’s not designed for one-stop-shop major fat removal like liposuction. When clients come to Astarita for a consultation, she considers “their age, skin quality—will it rebound? Will it look good after volume is removed?—and how thick or pinchable their tissue is,” before approving them for treatment, because the suction panels can only treat the tissue it can access. “If someone has thick, firm tissue,” explains Astarita, “I won’t be able to give them a wow result.
WHAT ARE THE RESULTS?
“It often takes a few treatments to get to your optimum results,” says Roostaeian, who admits that a single treatment will yield very minimal change, sometimes imperceptible to clients. “One of the downsides of [CoolSculpting] is there’s a range for any one person. I’ve seen people look at before and after pictures and not be able to see the results.” All hope is not lost, however, because both experts agree that the more treatments you have, the more results you will see. What will happen eventually is an up to 25 percent fat reduction in a treatment area. “At best you get mild fat reduction—a slightly improved waistline, less bulging of any particular area that’s concerning. I would emphasize the word mild.”
WILL IT MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT? "None of these devices shed pounds,” says Astarita, reminding potential patients that muscle weighs more than fat. When you’re shedding 25 percent of fat in a handful of tissue, it won’t add up to much on the scale, but, she counters, “When [you lose] what’s spilling over the top of your pants or your bra, it counts.” Her clients come to her in search of better proportions at their current weight, and may leave having dropped “one or two sizes in clothing.”
Although the mechanism of cryolipolysis is not completely understood, it is believed that vacuum suction with regulated cooling, impedes blood flow and induces crystallisation of the targeted adipose tissue with no permanent effect on the overlying dermis and epidermis. This cold induced ischaemia may promote cellular injury in adipose tissue via cellular oedema and mitochondrial free radical release. Another theory is that the initial insult of crystallisation and cold ischaemic injury is further perpetuated by ischaemia reperfusion injury, causing generation of reactive oxygen species, elevation of cytosolic calcium levels, and activation of apoptotic pathways.
Whichever the mechanism of injury, adipocytes undergo apoptosis, followed by a pronounced inflammatory response, resulting in their eventual removal from the treatment site within the following weeks. The inflammatory process sees an influx of inflammatory cells at 14 days post treatment, as adipocytes become surrounded by histiocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and other mononuclear cells. At 14-30 days after treatment, macrophages and other phagocytes envelope and digest the lipid cells as part of the body’s natural response to injury. Initial concern was that cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoproteins (LDLs) and high density lipoproteins (HDLs), bilirubin and glucose levels were affected, however these have been shown to all stay within normal limits following the procedure.
Four weeks later, the inflammation lessens and the adipocyte volume decreases. Two to three months after treatment, the interlobular septa are distinctly thickened and the inflammatory process further subsides. Fat volume in the targeted area is apparently decreased and the septa account for the majority of the tissue volume.
Patients and treatment areas
Although all studies show reduction in every area examined, it is still unknown what areas are most responsive to cryolipolysis. Various factors may play a role in the degree of fat reduction observed after cryolipolysis. The vascularity, local cytoarchitecture, and metabolic activity of the specific fat depots in questions may play a role.
There is lack of substantial research to identify the ideal patient or even the ideal area to be treated. Given a modest (yet significant improvement of up to 25% reduction in subcutaneous fat), it is thought that the best candidates are those within their ideal weight range and those who engage in regular exercise, eat a healthy diet, have noticeable fat bulges on the trunk, are realistic in their expectations, and are willing to maintain the results of cryolipolysis with a healthy, active lifestyle.
New design Cryolipolysis is safe for all skin types, with no reported pigmentary changes, and is safe for repeated application. Ferraro et al. suggest that patients who require only small or moderate amounts of adipose tissue and cellulite removal would benefit most from cryolipolysis treatment. Contraindications include cold-induced conditions such as cryoglobunaemia, cold urticaria, and paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. Cryolipolysis should not be performed in treatment areas with severe varicose veins, dermatitis, or other cutaneous lesions.
HIFU Decide Guide: Which Device is for you?
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound also known as HIFU machine is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment procedure that tightens and lifts the skin using ultrasound energy. It is taken to be a safe and effective procedure for tightening the facial skin.
HIFU treatment procedure has loads of advantages over the traditional means of facial improvement: painless, zero incisions, scarring, and recovery time. In addition, it is far less expensive too.
Granted, HIFU is a popular means of looking better. Little wonder that there are tons of clinics and spas that offer services they claim can make you look better. However, that's not enough reason for you to jump on the bandwagon of folks searching for ways to look better
Why Choosing The Right HIFU Device is Important?
Be sure to get a professional assessment before you start your HIFU treatment. This is because a professional and objective assessment from a specialist will help you discover the best form of treatment using the right multifunctional HIFU that is suitable for you.
Ultrasound technology is completely safe and has been used in medicine for decades. It works by contracting and shortening muscle fibers, thus causing the lifting and tightening effect that makes the skin look better.
Lifting, tightening, and fats melting are natural processes that result in a slimmer face, reduced jowl line & facial tightening. Confused about how to go about the HIFU facelift treatment in Singapore?
You will be able to decide on the best HIFU device to use when you finally decide to undertake the treatment. Let’s look at some of the most common HIFU devices in Singapore.
What is the working principle for HIFU vaginal machine?
The vaginal HIFU machine uses an noninvasive ultrasonic focusing technique to focus on the mucous membrane fibrous layer and muscle layer directly. Using ultrasonic waves as the energy source and taking advantage of its penetration and focus, the system will send out ultrasonic energy focusing in the the lamina and muscle fiber layer in a predetermined depth. A higher intensity of ultrasonic region, called focus region, is formed. In 0.1 second, the temperature of the region can reach to above 65 ℃ , so the collagen is reorganized and the normal tissue outside the focal region is undamaged. Therefore, the desired depth layer can obtain the ideal effect of collagen concentration, reorganization and regeneration. Ultimately, the mysterious effect of vagina tightening is achieved.
What is the functions for each cartridges?
1. Vagina tightening head
4.5mm heads produce the energy directly to the SMAS , make it thermal coagulation , make the SMAS tighten and lifting, improved the muscle structure from deep to shallow, make better to help the muscle layer restore elasticity and tighten.
3.0mm head the ultrasound penetrates to the skin under the depth of 3.0mm, aim at activating the dermal layer’s collagen, effectively enhance the effect of the consolidation of the outline, but also shrink large pores and reduce the appearance’s wrinkles.
Knowing that you are interested in 3D Hifu machine, we have listed articles on similar topics on the website for your convenience. As a professional manufacturer, we hope that this news can help you. If you are interested in learning more about the product, please feel free to contact us.3D HIFU is ultrasound energy distance of width, length and depth, which more Comprehensive, three-dimensional. Directly delivers heat energy to skin and subcutaneous tissue that can stimulate and renew the skin's collagen and thus consequently improving the texture and reducing sagging of the skin. The high quality handle with German imported motor can be used for life. Total 8 cartridges supply treatmetn for whole body. 1.5mm is for the forehead and around the eyes, 3.0mm is for the dermis layer--face treatment, 4.5mm is for the SMAS layer--face treatment, 6.0mm/8mm/10mm/13mm/16mm for body fat layer. Every cartridge can reach 20000 lines lifetime.
4D HIFU machine uses the power of High intensity focused ultrasound to safely lift and tighten skin. High intensity focused ultrasound is a form of energy that is significantly different than light such as IPL and Lasers or Electrical (Radio-Frequency) energy. HIFU, protects the skin surface, whilst precisely penetrating at deeper depths and higher temperatures than Radio Frequency for example, treating beyond the Dermis and Foundation layers, where structural weakening starts.
Tissue at the target point is heated to 65°C, Thermal Heat is created with the skin tissue creating both spaced ‘wounds’ and cellular friction - which in turn promotes healing, immediately contracts collagen and stimulates a rapid production. Over the next 90-180 days, the wound-healing response stimulates long-term tissue and leads to further lifting and tightening, with results that can last years.
4D HIFU also helps to improve the tone and all the features of your face such as your eyes, cheeks, mouth, chin and skin also making it a viable alternative to Botox, with the benefit of being able to maintain facial expression. Excellent for post surgical face lift to maintain the lift and treat blood stasis, scarring, and numbness.
This mode could minimize treatment time achieves the great anti-aging result. It will be leading the new treading in the market, and help you to expand your business.

Make a timetable for one year first. Whole syllabus should be completed with the set timetable.
Begin with an optional subject which will take three to four months. This will go along with UPSC current affairs reading and GS as well.
Try to sync current affairs with GS topics.
After optional is done, you can now divide your GS and optional timing giving more focus to GS.
Once this is done, shift all your focus to prelims.Dedicated 3 months should be given for UPSC preparation.
You can visit Jatin Verma’s IAS Academy’s website for joining 120 days plan for free.
Tip 5: Newspaper
Newspaper reading is crucial from day one to the last day. This last day of preparation is the day of your interview. The Hindu or Indian Express should be read on a regular basis. Notes should be made from it and important data should be extracted and noted down.
You can watch youtube videos to know the strategy in detail and get a clearer idea.
Tip 6: NCERTs
NCERTs form the foundation of preparation. NCERT books from class 6 to 12 should be read.UPSC asks questions directly from NCERTs. These marks are in your hand, you have to grab them. It even forms the benchmark score. Because many aspirants will be able to solve these questions correctly, and you can’t miss these marks. If you missed them, you will be out of the race there itself.
Geography Class 6 to 12
History Class 6 to 12
Old NCERT by R.S Sharma /Satish Chandra
Art and Culture Class 11 and 12
Indian economy Class 9 to 12
Tip 7: Important websites
There are many important government websites which you should be visiting. PIB is the most important. All the ministry website should be visited. Atleast go through them every week. Schemes and its details can be read from respective websites. FAQ on schemes are good sources of relevant information.
Tip 8: Notes
First tip on this is do not make notes from first reading. You may find almost everything important in first reading. Only do underline with pencil for the first reading. From second reading inwards, you can start making notes. Notes making should be crisp and concise. It should not be the copy paste of a textbook. Key words, flow charts and diagrams should be used. Make use of one note or evernote for digital notes making.Like cashless economy, paperless economy is easy and viable.
Tip 9: Mapping
Map study is something which requires time. It is hard to sit and mug up maps in some days. It should get organic with gradual process. Make a habit of looking at maps every day.
Map study should be done under various headings such as geographical features like mountains, rivers, etc.Under this, know its origin, course, states and recent development.
Important places in news should be linked to map plotting.
There are some favourite areas of UPSC like Asia, gulf region from which they will ask map based questions.
Tip 10 : Answer Writing
Answer writing is an inevitable part of UPSC preparation. Don’t wait for the syllabus to complete and then write. AAs soon as you finish one topic, start writing on that topic. You can find questions on multiple online IAS coaching websites.
Tip 11: PYQ
Previous Year Questions analysis is very important. You can analyse it by taking use of online coaching institutes which provide prelims and mains analysis of every year question papers. You can also buy books available in the market for the same.
PYQ ensures your preparation in the correct direction. Try to solve them as well.
Tip 12: Test Series
Joining any mock test for UPSC is important as this will make sure you are handling your emotions well in the exam hall. It will also bring you in the practice of handling and solving new types of questions because UPSC anyway asks unpredictable types of questions.
UPSC free mock tests are easily available in the market.
After every mock, analyse your performance. Read the detailed given answers carefully.
Tip 14: Revision
Revise , revise and revise. Follow the scientific way of revision. Our brain tends to forget learnt things if it is not revised in regular intervals of time. What you read today and notes made should be revised within 24 hours. Then after seven days, then 15 days, the 30 so on. It is a little tricky to revise such a big quantity of notes.
For this you make use of digital sheets, notes and reminders.
Tip 15: Health
Health should be a priority. You can’t concentrate if you are not well. Maintain a good diet and have brain foods like almonds, green vegetables, fruits, etc.

Climate Change Means Trouble for Power Grids (NYT) Huge winter storms plunged large parts of the central and southern United States into an energy crisis this week, with frigid blasts of Arctic weather crippling electric grids and leaving millions of Americans without power amid dangerously cold temperatures. The grid failures were most severe in Texas, where more than four million people woke up Tuesday morning to rolling blackouts. Separate regional grids in the Southwest and Midwest also faced serious strain. As of Tuesday afternoon, at least 23 people nationwide had died in the storm or its aftermath. Analysts have begun to identify key factors behind the grid failures in Texas. Record-breaking cold weather spurred residents to crank up their electric heaters and pushed power demand beyond the worst-case scenarios that grid operators had planned for. At the same time, a large fraction of the state’s gas-fired power plants were knocked offline amid icy conditions, with some plants suffering fuel shortages as natural gas demand spiked. Many of Texas’ wind turbines also froze and stopped working. The crisis sounded an alarm for power systems throughout the country. Electric grids can be engineered to handle a wide range of severe conditions—as long as grid operators can reliably predict the dangers ahead. But as climate change accelerates, many electric grids will face extreme weather events that go far beyond the historical conditions those systems were designed for, putting them at risk of catastrophic failure.
‘A complete bungle’: Texas’ energy pride goes out with cold (AP) Anger over Texas’ power grid failing in the face of a record winter freeze mounted Tuesday as millions of residents in the energy capital of the U.S. remained shivering with no assurances that their electricity and heat—out for 36 hours or longer in many homes—would return soon or stay on once it finally does. “I know people are angry and frustrated,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who woke up to more than 1 million people still without power in his city. “So am I.” In all, between 2 and 3 million customers in Texas still had no power nearly two full days after historic snowfall and single-digit temperatures created a surge in demand for electricity to warm up homes unaccustomed to such extreme lows, buckling the state’s power grid and causing widespread blackouts. More bad weather, including freezing rain, began arriving Tuesday night. Making matters worse, expectations that the outages would be a shared sacrifice by the state’s 30 million residents quickly gave way to a cold reality, as pockets in some of America’s largest cities, including San Antonio, Dallas and Austin, were left to shoulder the lasting brunt of a catastrophic power failure, and in subfreezing conditions that Texas’ grid operators had known was coming.
Military recruitment (Foreign Policy) A meager job market has given military recruitment a boost around the world, the Wall Street Journal reports. In Canada, applications to join the armed services surged 37 percent over the last nine months of 2020 compared to the previous year. Australia reported a 9.9 percent annual increase in applications. The United Kingdom met its military recruitment targets for the first time in seven years and in the United States, 92 percent of eligible personnel re-enlisted, compared to just 83 percent the previous year.
Volunteer paramedics patrol streets of Venezuela’s capital (AP) Venezuela’s deepening crisis has gutted emergency ambulance services, so a group of volunteer paramedics has stepped into the void to offer life-saving help on the tough streets of Caracas. Calling themselves Angels of the Road, the volunteer corps relies on donated medical supplies and funding from international organizations. Despite receiving no paychecks, its roughly 40 paramedics are ready at a moment’s notice to jump onto motorcycles and fire up their single ambulance and race into the streets. Jonathan Quantip, 44, said he and co-founder Zuly Rodiz launched the project two years ago after watching their native Venezuela precipitously decline over years of political and social crisis. “We Venezuelans have to solve our own country’s problems,” Quantip said. “We have to use the skills we’re each good at.” The group works on a shoestring budget with nothing left over for wages, so each paramedic relies on another source of income. Some donate their off-time after working in hospitals and firehouses. Others flip burgers in fast-food restaurants.
‘We are like captives’: life in Britain’s quarantine hotels (Reuters) Mohamed Noor faces 10 days in COVID-19 quarantine in a hotel room near London’s Heathrow Airport after falling foul of new border controls because of a flight delay. “I don’t have a book. I don’t have a Koran. I don’t have nothing here,” Noor, a 55-year-old Muslim, said by phone after his arrival on Monday, a day later than planned, landed him with a 1,750-pound ($2,400) bill. In another hotel nearby, 61-year-old Sole, who declined to give her surname, said she realised too late that the new rules would kick in before she returned from visiting friends in Chile. “We are like captives in these rooms,” she said. Britain says the measures, effective since Monday, are needed to protect its COVID-19 vaccination programme and guard against new coronavirus variants. People returning from any of 33 “high-risk” countries where travel to Britain is banned must pay 1,750 pounds for a 10-day quarantine hotel package. After being taken by bus to government-contracted hotels, they must spend most of the time in their rooms and have meals delivered to their door.
Toothless travel restrictions (Foreign Policy) Irish holidaymakers have suddenly shown a keen interest in dental hygiene as they attempt to shirk strict lockdown measures to escape the bleak North Atlantic winter. Traveling for “essential medical, health or dental services” is allowed under Ireland’s coronavirus restrictions, leading to a surge in dental surgery appointments in Spain’s Canary Islands. Roberta Beccaris, a receptionist at a dental surgeon’s office on the island of Tenerife, reported taking multiple calls from prospective Irish clients, who have demanded e-mail confirmations of the bookings. Police can issue fines to rule-breaking travelers of roughly $600, although they are powerless to stop those with proof of a medical appointment. “Obviously as they are not turning up, we now understand it is just an excuse for a holiday,” she told RTÉ radio.
Spain betting on vaccine passports to revive summer tourism (Reuters) Spain hopes the introduction of vaccination passports combined with pre-travel COVID-19 testing will allow British tourists to return to Spanish destinations this summer, a tourism ministry source told Reuters on Tuesday. The government has no plans to introduce quarantines on foreign visitors, and was also counting on a wider agreement to be hammered out between Europe and Britain to remove restrictions on non-essential travel, the official added. Over 2020, as global travel was dramatically curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, foreign tourism to Spain—one of the world’s most visited countries—fell 80% to just 19 million visitors, a level not seen since 1969.
China steps up online controls with new rule for bloggers (AP) Ma Xiaolin frequently wrote about current affairs on one of China’s leading microblogging sites, where he has 2 million followers. But recently, he said in a post, the Weibo site called and asked him not to post original content on topics ranging from politics to economic and military issues. “As an international affairs researcher and a columnist, it looks like I can only go the route of entertainment, food and beverage now,” the international relations professor wrote on Jan. 31. Ma, who often posted on developments in the Mideast, is one of many popular influencers working within the constraints of China’s heavily censored web who is finding that their space to speak is shrinking even further with the latest policy changes and a clean-up campaign run by the country’s powerful censors. Beginning next week, the Cyberspace Administration of China will require bloggers and influencers to have a government-approved credential before they can publish on a wide range of subjects. Some fear that only state media and official propaganda accounts will get permission. The latest move is in line with ever more restrictive regulations under President Xi Jinping that constrict an already narrow space for discourse. The Chinese leader has made “digital sovereignty” a central concept of his rule, under which authorities have set limits and increased control of the digital realm.
Japan’s ruling party wants more women at meetings—unless they talk (Reuters) After a sexism row sparked by Tokyo Olympics chief’s saying women talked too much at meetings, Japan’s ruling party wants women at key meetings—but only if they don’t talk. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party has proposed a new plan that allows five female lawmakers to join the party’s key meetings as observers. Toshihiro Nikai, the party’s 82-year-old secretary general, said on Tuesday that he heard criticism that the party’s board is male-dominated, but added that the board members are elected. But it is important for the party’s female members to “look” at the party’s decision-making process, he said. Those female observers can’t speak during the meetings, but can submit opinions separately to the secretariat office, the daily newspaper Nikkei reported. Requiring female observers at meetings to remain quiet has drawn criticism that the party is out of touch.
Big protests across Myanmar as UN expert fears violence (AP) Demonstrators in Myanmar gathered Wednesday in their largest numbers so far to protest the military’s seizure of power, as a U.N. human rights expert warned that troops being brought to Yangon and elsewhere could signal the prospect for major violence. U.N. rapporteur Tom Andrews said he was alarmed by reports of soldiers being transported into Yangon, the biggest city. “In the past, such troop movements preceded killings, disappearances, and detentions on a mass scale,” he said in a statement issued late Tuesday by the U.N. Human Rights office in Geneva. “I am terrified that given the confluence of these two developments—planned mass protests and troops converging—we could be on the precipice of the military committing even greater crimes against the people of Myanmar.” Wednesday’s turnout in Yangon appeared to be one of the biggest so far in the city. Protesters have adopted a tactic of blocking off streets from security forces by parking vehicles in groups with their hoods up and the excuse of having engine trouble.
Anti-Chinese Sentiment in Myanmar (Foreign Policy) Widespread protests against the Feb. 1 military coup in Myanmar have taken on an increasingly anti-Chinese tone, with rallies held outside the Chinese Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar and calls growing for boycotts of Chinese goods and services. Misinformation is spreading, including rumors that Chinese soldiers have infiltrated Myanmar and that Chinese software will be used to set up a Great Firewall. On balance, it seems unlikely that China supported the coup, especially given its relatively good relationship with the National League for Democracy. Anti-Chinese sentiment has a long history in Myanmar, both on the national level and at the local level, due to conflicts among ethnic Chinese communities and others. Chinese investment projects have been major flash points, especially the Myitsone Dam, which was suspended in 2011 following the move toward democracy. Locals have decried the environmental impacts and forced relocations associated with such projects, while Beijing has been keen to get them restarted. There is also growing anti-Chinese feeling across Southeast Asia. Many young people see parallels between the 2019 Hong Kong protests and their own resistance against local authoritarianism. China’s tactless authoritarianism and resentment toward outsiders contributes to that solidarity, but the main driver is the willingness of local autocrats and the uber-rich to suck up to China for their own ends. That can mean, as in Myanmar’s case, that China is blamed even when it hasn’t actually done much.
Sidelining MBS (Foreign Policy) The United States will downgrade its engagement with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of the Biden administration’s drive to “recalibrate” relations with the kingdom, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Tuesday. President Joe Biden will instead conduct diplomacy through Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, dealing a blow to the crown prince’s standing in Washington.
Gunmen kidnap at least 20 boys from Nigerian boarding school (Washington Post) Gunmen stormed a north-central Nigerian boarding school early Wednesday, kidnapping at least 20 teenage boys, the local governor said—the second mass abduction of children to shake the country in three months. The attackers raided the Government Science Secondary School in the town of Kagara before sunrise and dragged the classmates into the dense woods. Three teachers and 12 family members also vanished into the night, Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor of Niger state, said on television. Schools in the region have been shuttered. Helicopters hovered over the treetops as security forces continued their search and, by midmorning, authorities were still counting the missing.

Exodus 10:1-12:13, Matthew 20:1-28, Psalms 25:1-15, Proverbs 6:6-11
Today is the 30th day of January, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it's great to be here with you today on the eve of the last day of the first month of the new decade 2020. It’s great to be here with you today to take that next step forward. And in the book of Exodus, which is what we have settled into there is a showdown happening between God the most-high, and…and the Pharaoh of Egypt. And the battle is over God's people who have been enslaved in Egypt. He wants them out and Pharaoh who thinks he's a God himself isn't having any of it, but he's learning some pretty hard lessons in the process. So, we’re reading from the Evangelical Heritage Version this week. Exodus chapter 10 verse 1 through 12 verse 13.
Commentary:
Okay. In the book of Matthew Jesus continues to talk and reveal the kingdom of God. His ministry is centered around this revelation and the interesting thing about the revelation is that it is a different kind of kingdom than anyone is expecting. They are expecting a kingdom that is rooted in the physical world that can be experienced by the senses, right? One in which a great battle and great destruction and lots of blood of the enemies is involved. And Jesus is indeed announcing the kingdom of heaven, but it's not that. It's a totally different thing than that. It's something that is happening now if we have eyes to see and ears to hear. And, so, Jesus gave us another piece of what that looks like today. And, so, He tells a story as He's prone to do as we've already explored. “Indeed, the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.” That's how Jesus began, and He tells a story of how He hired some workers in the morning and a then, you know, He hired some workers midday and after launch and in the afternoon and getting toward the end of the day with only one hour left to work He hired more workers and they all went into the field. And, so, when everybody lines up to get paid, He starts with the people who got in last and he gives them a denarius, a day's wage, the agreed-upon days wage from the people who started first. And, so, when He gets to the people that had worked all day, they’re obviously expecting maybe something a little more than what they had agreed to. But at the end of it He gives them what they agreed to, like everybody got the same, everybody got paid. Of course, this angered the ones who felt as if they deserved more. They had agreed to the terms and they were given exactly what they had agreed to but as they compared themselves to others, they got a sense of entitlement that made them feel as if they deserved more. And the response of the master says it all. “Are you envious because I am generous? In the same way the last will be first and the first last.” So, what can we glean here about God's kingdom from what Jesus is saying? We can say that those who believe that they are owed something or deserve something from God because they have earned somehow something from God will get what they deserved and get it last. Those who realize that they are unspeakably fortunate just to be here at all can appreciate the value of what they've been given. Everyone gets the same. Nobody's better. Nobody deserves more. Nobody deserves more spotlight. And why would this be? Because we’re one body with one head. Nobody can say to anybody else, “I don't need you.” That's not true. God's kingdom is not a kingdom of comparison and selfishness. And as we explore this kingdom that we are a part of and that is happening through the lips of Jesus we are being awakened. We are learning. We are becoming aware. But we can see that Jesus disciples were not completely aware either. After this Story takes place, Jesus is continuing his journey to Jerusalem and this isn’that t for a visit, this…this is…this is Jesus going to die. And, so, He pulls His disciples together on this walk and tells them that He's going to die, that He's going to be arrested and turned over to the Gentiles and killed and that He's gonna come back. And, I mean, just imagine that you had that kind of foreknowledge about your own life. Imagine you knew that…that you’re gona die in a couple of days and you’re trying to kind of comfort everybody and share things. And, so, you say what you’ve gotta say and then a couple of your kids come to you and say, “hey since you’re gonna die can I have your car?” I mean that would be like so out of place, so bizarre. And yet that’s essentially what happened to Jesus. He’s telling His friends, “I'm gonna die.” And He unpacks all of that and then they keep walking and two of Jesus disciples and their mom come home to talk to Jesus and the mom…it’s the mom, she's…she's doing the requesting. Promise that in your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on your right hand and one on your left-hand. So, I’m not pointing out that piece of the story to bring us to some kind of application to our lives or some ways to think about this, I'm just pointing out the disconnect. Here we have the son of the living most-high God on planet Earth operating in a kingdom that is being revealed and living a life after a human fashion but completely whole and He's unpacking all of these parables, He's teaching privately of the kingdom. And now they're on their way to His death and this is how disconnected it is, “promise that I get a throne next to your throne. And we can often find that that's…that's really the motives, that's really what we're after is what we want. Like, we’re…we’re in this whole faith thing to get blessed, like to get stuff but if Jesus hasn't…Jesus hasn't made it clear enough yet, God's kingdom isn’t a kingdom of stuff. And we can be just as oblivious as Zebedee's sons sometimes.
Prayer:
Father we thank You for Your word, we thank You for another day to be in Your word, we thank You for what Your word is revealing to us and we thank You that as we do this day by day over and over coming back day after day, changes are happening within us and we are so open to it, we welcome it. We invite You fully to lead us into all truth. Come, Holy Spirit we pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi, DABbers I’m calling in to ask for your prayers. At this point I don’t even know what to pray for anymore. The reasoning behind why I need prayers is so complicated. I’m so lost I don’t know what’s the right thing to do or what’s the way forward but essentially I pray that God will hear me and He will come to me and show Himself to me and point me in the right direction because that’s the thing I need the most right now. A guy who I was seeing for a while, we were in a relationship. We broke up about seven months ago…about seven or eight…about eight months ago right now at this point and at the time of our breakup I didn’t realize that I was not okay with it. I just accepted it and I thought that it would be for the best but seven months later…eight months later I still found myself unable to move on and I just don’t know what to do. Every waking day and moment of my life…it’s just so painful and everything is just a reminder of him and the relationship we had. And the reason why it’s all the more complicated is because he actually started dating somebody else about three months ago. So, I don’t know what to do. Please pray for me.
Good morning Daily Audio Bible family this is Praying for my Unsaved family and it is the 23rd of January. I just wanted to thank Brian for his __ on Joseph on the 21st of January. I found it so helpful when you were talking about taking the long view and what we’re wallowing in right now is temporary. It was so encouraging. Thank you, Brian. I really needed to hear that as I work through some family issues that have brought me very low in the last couple of years. So, thank you. I also want to say thank you to Denise who called into the community prayer line on 11th of January at about one hour 47 minutes and she was talking about praying for her unsaved father and never giving up. And it really struck me at the end of your message Denise that when you said the gates of hell cannot resist us. Thank you for your encouragement because again, I pray constantly for my father who is in his late 80s now and not in the best of health and someone who’s hated Christians and Christianity most of his life. So, please family join me in praying for my dad. His name is Ivor IVOR and I would be very grateful for your prayers. Thank you all for such a wonderful podcast and thank you for all your encouragements. Thank you.
Hi Daily Audio Bible family this is Harold in St. Louis and I am the one who is running the Chicago Marathon. Today is January the 21st. It is about 5:30 PM. I am in the middle of Tower Grove Park right now. I just ran 2 ½ miles roughly according to my Garmin watch. The temperature is 17° outside. I am a day off, so I was listening to the 20th’s podcast because Monday I went and ran with some friends of mine. And as I got to around the 40s…40-ish minute mark there was a lady who was just welcoming me to this family. The next message came from a lady named Karen who also just welcomed me to this family to…to be with you guys and she gave me the Scripture first Corinthians, I believe it was nine. I’ve got the podcast actually stopped right now so when I get back, I can go and write this down somewhere. But I just wanted to say thank you because I am out here right now, it’s dark, it’s cold putting these miles in and I’ve found myself while I’m doing this, I’ll hear different folks out there like Terry the Trucker who I’ll say a prayer for while he’s actually praying and I don’t know if God answers my prayer because I still haven’t given myself over or there’s a couple in Illinois, Kingdom Seeker I believe and his voice is wonderful it makes me happy when I hear a song from him. Or even for Anonymous when I just hear someone else prayer for her and I just say, you know, Amen or yes Lord while I’m running and I’m finding it that I am crying and even now and crying and I have goosebumps on my arms. But I’m happy. Thank you. Thank you everyone.
Yes, Daily Audio Bible this is Cara from and I’m from Spring Hill Tennessee and the Lord gave me the name Shara Shalom. So, when I call in that will be the name that I’ll be using. It means song of peace, which is interesting because I have struggled with anxiety most of my entire life. And I’m calling in response to Esther who called just today, left a message from Nashville Tennessee. And I wanted to encourage you Esther that one of the ways that I dealt with and that the Holy Spirit walked with me through the recovery of anxiety, which I’ll probably always deal with, but I have found victory over this anxiety through the Scripture Philippians 4:6, which you had quoted. So, I want to remind you of the entire Scripture. “Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension shall guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I found that the best therapy for me was immediately when I will open my eyes my mind was start racing, my heart was start racing, everything would start. I would have this feeling of dread and overwhelming anxiety and the Holy Spirit started prompting me to thank Him. The first thing in the morning, open your eyes and start thanking Him for…for being alive. Thank Him for your breath. Thank Him for a roof over your head. Thank Him for the simple, the basic things. And as you begin to thank Him for…for your life and for the just…for the simple little things in your life, that you have breakfast, that you have a car, that you have clean clothes, whatever it happens to be, the thanksgiving replaces the anxiety and it is an amazing…it’s an amazing thing to watch, an amazing therapy to watch. And I know it worked for me. I know that it is actually now considered a legitimate therapy but that’s how I walk through the incredible…
Hello Daily audible Bible community this is Terry and Kansas City. This is my fourth year listening to the Scripture being read. I’m learning so much. Thank you, Brian. But this is my first year to really come into the community with prayer…with listening to prayers and praying for others and for that I am thankful. I was reminded today that there are people in this community that their only church is with the DAB community because, as the lady in England said the churches are not close to her so we have become her church. For the gentleman who had the stroke three years ago and this is the way that he hears the word because he cannot read it and God gives him an understanding. That is a blessing. But my heart and prayers go out for Heather who called with a desperate urge and desire to have God’s presence back in her life after Satan has destroyed her family and her tiredness just broke my heart. I’ve been there with being tired. So, I pray that God will show himself mightily in your life and will restore to you the years that the locusts have eaten and that you will feel His mighty presence in your life and that you can be the mom that you were called to be. My prayers go out to all of the community and thank you for praying for all who need it.
Yes, my name is Dana Roger Smith I’m from Arab Alabama and I was just listening to day 23 or January 23rd, the prayer from Heather from Atlanta and it actually broke my heart. I don’t know what happened when Satan attacked you, I don’t know what exactly happened, but I want to tell you last year was a very rough year for me. And I was at the end and at breaking point contemplating suicide. And I lost a child six years ago September 2013. She was 11 days old and I have childhood trauma. So, I’ve never truly recovered. And last year was a very…a breaking point. You know, I realized that people cannot…you know…you try to rely and depend on people and you really can’t, but God puts people in our life sometimes that He works through them. Anyways, and so that was a lot for me. I am so sorry that you are going through this and you sound so desperate. I hope you get this message and know Heather that I am praying for you. You know, I come to Atlanta, you know, live in Alabama and it’s about maybe three hours, four hours from my house but I do come and I will definitely be praying for you an…and I wish there was a way we could get in contact that I could actually just talk to because, you know, you sound like you just really need someone. So, Heather in Atlanta I pray that God reveals Himself to you in such a way that is undeniable and that He sends His army of angels to lift you up and to fight this battle you’re going through. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Hi DAB family this is Jenika. I am a bit more new to Brian’s devotions. My mom has been listening for years, but I have started on my own. It’s January 23rd and I heard this woman calling in about feeling lost and broken and abandoned and I want to know…to tell you that I understand that. Yours seems so much bigger than I feel but I want you to know that I love you, that I am praying for you, that God loves you and that these trials, even though they hurt, that I have been shown so much that this year that there is a reason for them. I love you so much and I thank you so much for sharing because it has encouraged me for the first time to share as well. And I want you to know that I’m praying for you and I love you. Thank you.

You are possibly eligible for unemployment benefits under the Employment Insurance System (EIS) if terminated due to the Covid-19 crisis. Still, you must apply within 60 days after losing it. Employment Insurance System (EIS) automatically registers private-sector workers earning more than RM30 per month, administered by the Social Security Organization (SOCSO/Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial – Perkeso). As part of EIS, you receive a job search allowance each month (assuming you cannot find a new job within six months), which can last up to six months. A percentage of your last drawn salary will be allocated to you each month as an allowance. In the first month, your allowance is 80% of your salary. Then, it reduces every month.
Perkeso says they will process it within seven days. They will pay the approved applications within another seven days. There is a maximum salary of RM4,000 for the allowance, which is also the top salary for contributions to EIS. As long as you earn at least RM4,000 a month, you will still be eligible for EIS benefits and can contribute to them. However, your contributions and gifts will be based only on the RM4,000 salary limit. Please visit Perkeso’s website for EIS calculations of benefits and contributions.

The mother who arrived at the doorstep of the Martha Diaz Shelter in Madera County with her two young children was terrified.
Terrified of the husband who’d raped and beaten her for seven years, held her captive in the house, and denied her medical care for the injuries he’d inflicted. Terrified because, in a fit of rage, he’d hurled a picture frame at her, which hit her baby. And terrified she’d be deported to Mexico and lose her children if she went to the police, or even entered the shelter.
“The only way she would go in the shelter, she made it very clear to us, was that her children had to be with her at all times, even if she went to the bathroom,” said Tina Rodriguez, who runs the domestic violence shelter serving mainly Latina and undocumented women. “She’d heard stories about how (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) did raids and how they would … gather all the children and hold them separately while they arrest and detain the adults. “The woman, who arrived at the shelter early last year, had heard about recent raids in the community, in which an uncle had been detained and deported. As far as Rodriguez is aware, however, ICE has not targeted domestic violence shelters.
Rodriguez is encountering extreme fear among immigrant domestic violence victims a lot these days. Spooked by ICE raids in their communities, news of family separations at the border, and anti-immigrant policies from the federal government, undocumented domestic violence survivors are staying with abusers longer and shunning help, often at risk of their lives, victim advocates said.
Survivors who do come forward also face greater challenges to pursuing safety and stability than in the past. Since 2007, undocumented victims of domestic violence have been able to apply for a “U visa” granting them legal status if they help police bring their abuser to justice. The purpose of the visas, when approved by Congress in 2000, was to improve public safety by encouraging crime victims to come forward.
But obtaining these visas has become increasingly fraught under the Trump administration, advocates said. Those who apply face a years-long waitlist, increased scrutiny of their cases and deportation risks. In many cases, legal advocates still recommend that victims pursue the visas, but the decision is a riskier one than in the past.
“There’s more people hesitant now than ever,” said Rodriguez. Victims “are falling more underneath the radar … When I do see them, I’m no longer getting someone that comes in with an injury or two. I’m getting them when they’re severely beaten and it’s a matter of life or death.”
In a 2017 poll, organizations working with domestic violence survivors reported almost 80 percent of immigrant victims were scared to report their abuse to the police. Three out of four advocates said their immigrant clients had concerns about pursuing their case in court, and almost half said they worked with survivors who dropped civil and criminal cases out of fear.
Grace Huang, policy director for the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence which helped conduct the poll, said she expects an updated survey planned for this year will reveal an even bleaker picture.
“It’s probably gotten worse given what we are hearing. There’s been more restrictions, more rigid interpretation of the law,” she said. “We are hearing from individual attorneys that they are working with individual survivors who are declining to apply because they’d rather be under the radar than (have) immigration authorities have any information about them.”
1000 Paper Cuts
Applying for U visa protection has become more perilous on several fronts, Huang said. First, there’s the ever-growing waitlist. U visa approvals are capped at 10,000 per year, but there are currently more than 200,000 applications pending, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services data. That means applicants must wait years for their case to be approved. Advocates said the long wait list predates the Trump administration. But Huang said the current administration has made no effort to boost staffing to address the backlog, even as it increases scrutiny of each case. She said there are only about 60 adjudicators processing U visa applications—not enough to keep up with the ever-growing number of applications.
Meanwhile, federal policy changes have put applicants on edge. In 2017, the Trump administration rescinded a policy that protected crime victims from deportation if they had a U visa application pending. This increases U visa applicants’ risk for deportation if they get detained for a minor infraction, such as a traffic violation, or are found to be in the country unlawfully, according to a Human Rights Watch report.
Then in December, the U.S. Citizenship office put out a memorandum allowing initiation of deportation proceedings against applicants who’ve been denied a U visa. That was not common practice in the past, Huang said, and makes applying for a U visa more risky.
Even as wait times increase, immigration authorities have rolled back a practice of granting temporary work authorizations to U visa applicants following a preliminary review of their paperwork, said Huang. A few years ago, applicants could expect to get a work permit within about 6 months, she said. Now many people are not getting these provisional work permits at all, said Rosie Hidalgo, senior director of public policy at Casa de Esperanza, a nationwide organization fighting domestic violence in Latino communities.
“There is great concern,” Hidalgo said. “The economic hardship is tremendous and can result in that individual being more vulnerable to either staying in an abusive relationship, having to return to an abusive relationship, or falling into another abusive relationship because they’re so economically dependent.”
Other challenges for survivors include more intense vetting of U visa applications by immigration officers, increased difficulty getting certain application fees waived, and fears of repercussions from accessing public benefits such as food stamps and health care that can help stabilize survivors while their cases are pending, advocates said.
“Everything is harder, everything is more difficult, everything takes longer,” said Angel Graf, managing attorney at the Immigration Center for Women and Children in San Francisco.
“It’s almost like death by 1,000 paper cuts,” said Morgan Weibel, executive director of the Tahirih Justice Center, also in the San Francisco Bay Area. “All these things coming together creates this burden for clients.”
Uncertain Advice
The uncertainty surrounding the U visa process has made advising immigrant domestic violence survivors more complex, advocates said.
Graf said she still recommends eligible survivors apply for the visas, because for many it’s their only chance of obtaining legal status, and delaying an application could make their wait even longer. But she also has to warn them of the potential risks.
“I have to tell victims that there is no special protection for (them),” she said. “That just like any other undocumented person they are taking a risk. If their case is denied, they could very well be sent to a deportation proceeding … It’s an additional worry.”
At the Tahirih Justice Center, legal advisors are allowing survivors who are nervous about providing personal information on a U visa application to use an attorney’s address instead of their own, Weibel said.
And at Community Action Partnership of Madera County, which runs theMartha Diaz Shelter, victim advocates have enlisted attorneys to help represent clients applying for U visas, and work closely with the local district attorney’s office to expedite paperwork. They also work with county law enforcement to reassure undocumented community members that they won’t be deported if they come forward to report a crime.
Compared to survivors in some other parts of the country, U visa applicants in California do have some advantages. They can apply for food stamps and Medi-Cal for themselves and their children, for example. And, at least in some jurisdictions, local law enforcement agencies are following the state’s sanctuary law that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
What’s really needed, however, is greater protection for applicants, a lifting of the 10,000 annual visa cap, and hiring of more federal staff to review U visa cases, Hidalgo and others agreed. Some victims rights advocates are pinning hopes on a plan by California Congressman Jimmy Panetta to reintroduce a bill that would remove the cap, prevent detention or deportation of U visa applicants, and require timely processing of work authorization permits.
Back in Madera County, the domestic violence survivor Rodriguez encountered is now living in transitional housing and anxiously awaiting the outcome of her U visa application. She’s still worried she’ll be deported and separated from her children, Rodriguez said. She calls staff every day to ask about her status. Her ability to move her life forward is on hold.
“In domestic violence relationships survivors talk often about feeling like they walk on eggshells,” Rodriguez said. “With undocumented survivors, they stay walking on eggshells even after they leave the abusive relationship because they’re still at the mercy of the system to approve them the right to stay here.”

A woman with drive
FEMALE CABBIES IN LONDON ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, BUT PECKHAM RESIDENT MARIE-LOUISE SAMUELS IS ONE OF THEM.
She tells how she passed the gruelling seven-stage exam to gain the Knowledge, committing 25,000 streets and 100,000 landmarks to memory
WORDS ROSARIO BLUE PHOTO LIMA CHARLIE
There are more than 20,000 black taxis in London. Of these, just over 500 (or 2.2 per cent) are driven by women – and Peckham resident Marie-Louise Samuels is one of them.
Gaining the Knowledge of London (KOL) is the only way to become a licensed driver of the iconic black cab. The exam is notoriously tough, with just 30 per cent of candidates passing each year.
Marie-Louise had originally hoped to become a teacher and was working as a teaching assistant in a primary school. When a friend decided to learn the Knowledge and asked for her help with studying, Marie-Louise decided she wanted to become a taxi driver too.
She knew what she was letting herself in for, having watched her friend go through the gruelling process, but it didn’t deter her. In fact, it drove her even more, especially given the lack of female black taxi drivers.
After submitting her application, Marie-Louise received a KOL introductory pack containing information about the assessment process and the Blue Book.
The trusty tome details 320 runs (routes) within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross, 100,000 points (landmarks) and 25,000 streets of London’s intricate road system, all of which must be committed to memory.
Many people who apply to become licensed taxi drivers use a scooter to help them learn runs, spending at least 35 hours a week out on the streets of London memorising the routes. Marie- Louise was no exception: she would be out from 4am every day doing the same.
The average time it takes to complete the exam is four years, but Marie-Louise passed in an impressive three years, despite one major setback.
“I had a bike accident a few years ago when I was studying my runs”, she says. “It wasn’t life or death but I sustained a really terrible eye injury and I was like, ‘Do I want to carry on or do I just want to give it up?’ But I persevered, I carried on. I said, ‘You know what, this might be a setback, but it’s just preparing me for my comeback.’”
To receive her licence, she had to complete all seven stages of the KOL exam. The first stage is an optional self-assessment – no record of the results are kept. It is really for the purpose of revision and is made up of the initial 80 runs in the Blue Book.
The second stage is a multiple-choice written exam made up of five runs and major points and requires a mark of at least 60 per cent to pass.
Stages three to five are the “appearances”, the most nerve-wracking part of the process. These are one-to-one oral tests of about 20 minutes, where students are tested on their ability to recite from memory the most direct run between one point to another without hesitation.
As each stage of the exam progresses, the questions get more difficult and the appearances more frequent. Candidates receive a mark from A to D and must avoid scoring too many Ds or they will be sent back to the previous stage. After this, drivers move on to stage six, the suburban exam, which requires them to learn 25 additional runs.
Marie-Louise successfully completed all six stages and moved on to stage seven, the pre-licensing talk and the licence application. After receiving her licence, she was finally ready to put her three years of study into action.
“The first month of, you know, being a driver and going out, I experienced quite a lot of negative feedback and racism,” she says. “It’s sad. For me coming from a background that was multicultural it was like, wow.”
Peckham is one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the UK and Marie-Louise, like many people in this area, is used to living in a community that represents and celebrates all our glorious differences.
Aside from the racism she has received, she also has to deal with micro-aggressions daily; for example, the assumption that she didn’t go through the same process as every other cab driver to secure her licence.
She says: “You do get a lot of looks and then the muttering under the breath and then you just think to yourself, ‘OK, well you know, I studied hard for it. I’ve done it the proper way and I have every right to be here.’”
Marie-Louise has been a licensed taxi driver for eight months now and likes to make sure her passengers are comfortable and can have a good old chinwag and venting session. For her, one of the perks of her job is meeting different people, speaking to them, hearing how their day has been and just sharing positive vibes.
“What’s so refreshing about my job,” she says, “is you get people come in, you know they’re having a bad day and then they tell you their problems. It’s so nice to just be a listening ear and offer words of wisdom or advice.”
She sees herself driving her cab for a very long time, although she doesn’t rule out any future career changes because her main desire in life is to grow and inspire people, especially women and women of colour to challenge the limits society tries to place on their dreams and aspirations.
“Believe in yourself no matter what anybody tells you, or anybody throws at you,” she says. “Then you can overcome everything. Sometimes I’m driving and I think to myself, ‘Marie, despite the obstacles, you’ve done this.’”
Need a lift? Contact Marie-Louise on 07562 981717 or email [email protected]. She offers a 24-hour service.

Fees also differ according to business size: large companies pay higher fees than small businesses. However, it is important to consider the total cost of maintaining a patent in the US. The first maintenance fee is due on the first anniversary of the grant of a patent, and each subsequent fee increases as the patent term progress. Over 80 percent of patent holders pay the first maintenance fee. After that, 70 percent pay the second maintenance fee, and about half pay the third. In all, it is estimated that only 50 percent of patent owners pay the third maintenance fee. But the amount of fee increases with the length of the patent, so it is best to pay early to avoid fees and surcharges. In some countries, the maintenance fee is low or non-existent, but it is an important part of the process. If a patent owner fails to pay the maintenance fee, their rights could be in jeopardy. Moreover, some countries do not allow missed maintenance fees, and some offer smaller annuities to small entities. Ultimately, it’s up to you to choose the right annuity payment firm that fits your business needs and budget. Cost of paying maintenance fees The costs of paying maintenance fees to maintain a patent vary by country, but they generally start at $1600 for a three-year patent. These fees can rise to three-hundred dollars for a seven-year patent and more than $3,000 for an eleven-year patent. For small entities, the fees can be much lower. But they can add up over time, especially if you’re an inventor with a new product that hasn’t yet reached the market. The cost of paying maintenance fees to maintain a patent varies, depending on how long the patent has been granted. For a 3.5-year patent, the maintenance fee is due January 15, 2018. It applies to two reissued patents, a pending application, and the latest reissued patent. For an additional $800, you can have your patent renewed or reissued. Regardless of your situation, you should always make the payment on time, otherwise, your patent may expire. Maintenance fees are paid to the USPTO at least once during the life of the patent, which is 20 years. These fees are due at 3.5, 7.5, and 11.5 years from the date of the original grant. You can also pay a surcharge to maintain your patent. The maintenance fee for a standard entity is $500 USD, while the cost for a small entity is $250. Micro entities pay $125 USD. Failure to pay maintenance fees results in your patent lapse and renegotiation. File a priority application If you are looking to protect your patent, you should consider filing a priority application with the help of InventHelp services. Priority is a very simple concept, but it can get complicated in practice. If you lose your priority right, it could mean the difference between a successful patent application and a failed one. Here are a few tips to help you get priority to right the first time. Please note that this article does not constitute legal advice. A declaration of priority describes the basic information about the priority application. This document is filed at the time of a later application, usually within 16 months of the earliest priority date. For some countries, a certified copy or translation of a priority application is required. A representative will handle these formalities. If you file a priority application for the first time, you must have a valid patent application before you can do the rest. Pay maintenance fees After a patent is granted, the patent owner must pay maintenance fees to maintain it. This fee is due every 3.5, 7.5, or 11 years. However, you may pay it six months in advance if possible. If you do not pay the fee on time, your patent will automatically expire at the end of the grace period. If you fail to pay on time, the USPTO Director may levy a surcharge. Failure to pay maintenance fees results in forfeiture of patent rights. This is because another person can apply for the same invention in the meantime. This is because patentability is based on prior art. Failing to pay maintenance fees does not erase your patent publication. As a result, patent rejections would be based on prior art. However, it is possible to get your patent reinstated if you paid the fees late. Monitor the marketplace for unauthorized use To effectively enforce your patent rights, you must monitor the marketplace for unauthorized use. You can take action by sending a cease-and-desist demand letter to the infringer and pursuing other legal remedies. Failure to properly police your intellectual property will allow others to take advantage of your invention and erode the value of your patent. To avoid a legal battle, follow these tips for effective patent monitoring. File a renewal petition How to File a renewal petition to maintain a US patent? The renewal process can be challenging, especially if your patent has expired due to the nonpayment of maintenance fees. There are several steps to follow to ensure your renewal is granted without delays. First, you must establish that your delay was unintentional. In addition, you must include any maintenance fees owed and the fee to file the petition. You must pay a renewal fee on the anniversary of your filing date. However, you should be aware of the grace period granted by the patent office. In most cases, you have six months to make your payment. Alternatively, you can pay the fee in full within the grace period. File a response to a patent If you have received a rejection of a patent application, you may be wondering how to file a response to the action. In many cases, a response is an opportunity to amend claims or specifications, and to address perceived errors in the application. The patent attorney will draft the response document by noting the errors he feels were made in the original office action. Often, an InventHelp attorney will amend the claims in order to clarify the invention and overcome prior art. The attorney will also argue that the pending claims are patentable. An examiner’s Office actions often provide contact information. You can contact the examiner by email and arrange an interview. Because patent examiners are busy, you should schedule the interview a few weeks ahead of time. However, do not complain or lecture the examiner; you must make your arguments clear and present evidence that proves your point. In addition, a draft response may serve as a talking point, and be submitted to the examiner informally. #InventHelp #InventHelpPatentServices #InventHelpPatentAnIdea #InventHelpPatentAttorney #InventHelpPatentInvention #InventHelpStories #InventHelpSuccess #InventHelpInventions #InventHelpIdeas #InventHelpOfficeNearMe https://publicistpaper.com/what-is-the-process-to-maintain-a-patent-get-inventhelp-services/
