This evening marks the beginning of Yom HaShoah. This Jewish holiday and Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Yom HaShoah is different than International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we mourn the 6 million Jews, as well as the Romani and all the others who were systematically slaughtered by the Nazis during World War II.

on karamelle, why it sucks, and redeeming azteca's reputation.

I just got to Karamelle for the second time, and good lord. I hadn't forgotten how much I hated it, but it hit me like a wall of bricks. And I'm already preparing myself to marathon it and be fucking done questing here for at least a year.

I think it breaks down like this.

Baby's first workers rights movement/sugary-sweet surveillance state Listen. I know this is a game that doesn't allow for player characters to have much individual impact on the in-game narrative. I know we've had to do errands for cops. I know we work for a war criminal. I KNOW there are flaws in the system. But there's something about the way that Karamelle's set up that makes it all feel so. much. worse. And that's the fact that Karamelle has such a stellar reputation within the Spiral before this. The happiest place in the Spiral, the sweetest treats in the Spiral. Everyone seems to fucking love this place. Almost no one outside of those actually working there seem to understand how corrupt it is. And so the YW is talked down to at every turn, like this is their first exposure to a corrupt environment. And sure, maybe it is within, canon. YW gets isekai'd at a very young age and then made into a child soldier, maybe this is actually the first time in canon that they've been introduced to these concepts. But (and this may just be me) it feels really rude to the player -- who might actually have experience with these ideas -- to make them feel like a fucking idiot with the dialogue options. Karamelle's characters just feel rude.

Oh, so the Gobblers were a fatphobic, Roald Dahl type thing from the start. Cool cool cool. Any of you ever read Roald Dahl's book "The Twits"? It's a very unremarkable story all things considered, except for this bit.

Aside from Roald Dahl's unavoidable history of antisemitism, does this remind you of anything? Honestly, this reminds me of the Gobbblers.

We first meet the Gobblers around level 10 in Wizard City -- creatures driven by consumption. And then we get to Empyrea and hear that the Alphoi -- skinny "civilized" creatures -- can become Gobblers if they eat too much or are unhealthy in their eating habits. Which makes one of our oldest running enemies a loop-around fatphobic thing, ESPECIALLY when we get to them in Karamelle, the home world of the Gobblers. Rosina, especially, just oozes fatphobia and diet culture. The literal vilification of being fat isn't even subtext, it's just text.

The Old One, The Cabal, and what to do when your escape from the world ends up shoving what you were escaping from right back in your face. When I was in sophomore year of college, fall of 2019, I had one of the worst mental health periods of my life. Antisemitism was fucking everywhere, I was always a moment away from a panic attack, and it felt like no one understood. While I'm lucky in the fact that I was able to get an official diagnosis for genetically inherited PTSD, alongside the reassurance that I wasn't fucking crazy, there was a period when I just needed to go home for a moment. So when I was going back to my dorm from the dining hall to make sure all my stuff was ready to go, I opened up tumblr and made a post on a long-gone RP sideblog I had for the Swedish Chef (y'know, from The Muppets? long story), and before I'd even gotten halfway across campus, I'd received threatening and violent messages from someone RPing as Borat, which only got worse when they realized they were talking to an actual Jewish person.

That escape from reality didn't even last five fucking minutes before the horrors I was trying to avoid found me.

Now, Wizard101 has always been a source of comfort for me. I made my account fourteen years ago, and I do not know what my life would look like if I hadn't done that. There are flaws with this game, yes, sure, but over the past five years (since I got a wiz compatible laptop) I've developed a bit of a reliance on it to get me through the horrors. No better form of escapism.

But no art form is free of the horrors.

And Wizard101 has the fucking Cabal and Old One.

The Cabal within the fiction of Wizard101 is a secret, nefarious organization pulling the strings on events across the Spiral, controlling history from the shadows. This term literally originates in antisemitic conspiracy theory, with the term 'cabal' originating from the term for Jewish mysticism, 'kabbalah'. And I promise you, you've heard plenty of applications of this conspiracy theory in real life too. It feeds into the idea that Jews (or 'global elite') control the government, the media, the banks.

And then, we get to the man in control of it all. The Old One. Whether or not this was intended, he's a walking, talking antisemitic caricature. The octopus as a symbol for the mythical Elders of Zion is a longstanding dogwhistle (see attached for a guide to this and many other visual dogwhistles). "Oh, he's based on H.P. Lovecraft-" So he's based on the works of a famous racist and antisemite, cool cool cool.

It's just exhausting, walking through a world that is so clearly modeled after Germany and other parts of eastern Europe, and finding antisemitism around every corner. And even more exhausting considering it's almost impossible to tell if they meant to do it. Antisemitism is so fucking ingrained in the world at this point that I don't actually know what they meant to do here, what they did maliciously or out of ignorance, or if any of it was put in with the purpose of turning it on its head. Over the past few years, it has become glaringly obvious that a lot of people don't realize when they're running across antisemitism, or even taking part in it. Including people I really thought would know better.

Side note. For those of you who know I see Dasein as Jewish, you may be wondering how I balance that out with the antisemitic nature of The Old One, since they share a physical form. I think of it like this. Dasein did not choose The Old One. He did not choose to resemble that, but he can attempt to reclaim it. Dasein's Judaism comes not from the resemblance he holds to the hatred that haunts us, but from the love that keeps us going. He questions authority and longstanding tradition, chooses to do what's right instead of what's expected, and is kind in the face of hatred. He literally makes himself, and a world, out of nothingness. Something out of Nothing. He's so Jewish you guys.

The Spiral's "Worst World Award" goes to... I know we all say "fuck Azteca" pretty often on this website, but I don't think it deserves to be deigned the worst world in Wiz. My main gripe with Azteca is how inaccessible it gets after Xibalba strikes -- the flashing lights aren't exactly photosensitive friendly. Which further lends frustration to my completionist nature, meaning I have to finish all quests, badges, and fishing before I finish the world (making it take forever to finish). Aside from that, there really isn't that much wrong with the world (and if you argue that it sucks because you can't save Azteca, I get it, but some tragedies are inescapable by their very nature). It's a problem of gameplay, versus a problem of plot in the case of Karamelle. And maybe its just because I'm a writer, but problems with plot feel much more egregious. I really do think Karamelle deserves more vitriol than it gets.

European parliament mandates: this is where you vote for a party and their percentage decides how many ppl they get to sent to the EP. across europe this year the far right has gained massive ground, in hungary the nazi party got 6,8 percent, and we have no leftists or even so called liberals in there anymore.

local elections: this is conplicated. if you live in the country you voted for your city/towns mayor, and a representative onto the city council. if you live in budapest you voted for the mayor of the district you live in, a representative onto the district council, a party in the city council elections (based on percentage they can send an amount of representatives into city council) and the lord mayor of budapest

so the current, and likely future (SWEEP!!) lord mayor of budapest is Karácsony Gergely. hes a centre left politician, and while i disagree w a lot of his policies hes a MAJOR improvement on our previous mayor. ive been volunteering for various ngos and volunteer groups for a long time now and karigeri is always very amenable to working with us, under his time homelessness hasnt like, improved but he stopped putting homeless people in jail for being homeless, and removed a lot of hostile architecture in parks. also he recently worked out a massively beneficial deal for monthly transport passes which i wont get into but its cool. anyway like, the guy isnt the greatest is what im trxing to say but hes done shit that i support and being an activist in budapest is easier w him as the mayor

I'm gonna rant about Harry Potter for a bit. Fair warning.

I got tired of Harry Potter well over 10 years ago. The final movies hadn't even been released and because I have the disadvantage of living in bloody England Harry Potter bullshit has been EVERYWHERE for TWO FUCKING DECADES. I remember my friend dragging me to the studio tour because she got tickets for her bday. I like movie BTS stuff but my god the amount of BUY THIS BUY THAT that gets shoved in your face drove me mad. Proud to say that other than the OG books I read when I was a teenager I have never owned a single bit of HP merchandise in my LIFE. It took my irl friends bullying me to finally go on pottermore and get sorted into a Hogwarts house when I was 27. TWENTYSEVEN. I resisted for years!! I don't even care. They sat me down and made me log on to that stupid website and take the stupid quiz whilst I raised an eyebrow the whole time and tried to smile and pretend it was fun. After all, I'm not actually a total bitch and they are my friends and were enjoying themselves and I didn't wanna upset them. But why do I need to know if I'm a hufflepuff or whatever? Oh thats right, so I can buy the appropriate MERCHANDISE.

You know real witches make their wands? They go out and find a tree and ask the tree if they can take a branch, you have to give the tree something back and say a blessing. You can add crystals or ribbon or whatever you want but a wand is NOT something you buy in a bloody shop. I hate that HP made kids think that.

I have been obsessed with witchcraft and paganism since I was a child. I was a weird kid. Harry Potter turned something I was passionate about in a deeply personal way into a consumerist nightmare. Witch became synonymous with it, spells, charms, magic, I'm honestly surprised JKR didnt try to copyright the terms.

Look I dont often talk about social issues. My tumblr is my escape from the injustices of the world and I take my mental health very seriously. But I support trans and jewish people in boycotting this game.

I care about trans rights, about the rights of LGBTQA+ people. The rise of antisemitism AGAIN deeply disturbs me. People truly never learn from history do they? I try to do my bit where I can offline. I have signed petitions, I have donated to causes where I have found them and I am most definitely gonna do my damndest to get everyone I know to vote the transphobic (and otherwise generally evil in every way) Tory government OUT at the next election.

This rant may come across a bit selfish. It is tbh. I am fucking glad Harry Potter isnt popular anymore. Though outside of online communities particularly in the UK its still huge and everywhere. I wish we could wipe it off the face of the Earth.

I am fed up of all these franchises though. If I never have to sit through another Marvel movie it'll be a happy day. If I never have to hear the fucking Star Wars theme again I'll celebrate, if I never have to read about another Disney remake again Ill be so relieved (although I do get some satisfaction reading about them flopping). This post capitalism hellscape we exist in is fucking exhausting.

What we really need to do with these franchises though is pull an Avatar on them (the blue people not the cool cartoon). We need to stop talking about them. Stop letting them infect our collective cultural consciousness. The only way to get them out of our faces is to actually let them die. We did it right with Fantastic Beasts. We can do it again. Remember that in capitalism, even negative press is good press, and the more the press focuses on the controversies and discourse, the more the name of the game is getting into the minds of consumers, especially those that dont give a fuck about trans rights or antisemitism.

To give you context about this epiphany I had last night. It haunted me. I dreamt about it last night and when I woke up this morning, it was an easy, peaceful feeling and a sense of peace and warmth.

I was watching TV, it was “48 Hours,” and the episode was of the explanation of a murder and the passage is on the woman’s headstone. When I saw it, it slapped me in the face. I felt that moment of Zen, beauty, joy and happiness.

I felt the need to be singular, unified, honest and consistent. I believe that is why He has thrown us together. He has given us a road to follow and we shall continue our path forward and we will come together as one.

The enlightenment was not icky or anything shuddering but just love.

God blessed us both and we will continue our journey and eventually be one unit.

God sees us as one. He knows that we are not the same person but our hearts are one.

Two different people who are vulnerable, broken, hurt. We rage against the things that have happened and have left us open and raw. Yet we have the foresight to walk away from the pain and not the truth of that pain and anger. Not to just leave it there and we go through our day like nothing happened, but to make sure that we put on a closet shelf and remember it’s there to keep us safe from going backwards.

The vision was clear. I’ve done my best to keep it away from me. The harder I work to make it go away, the harder it comes back and says no fucking way dude.

The disconnected voice is cheering us on. God said that we should be there. It’s not a venial or mortal sin for either one of us, but to be there. To be in each other’s presence. To show us how we can love each other and not cross the blurred lines.

I’m right with the Lord today. No one can take it away from me today and the Lord has blessed me in a beautiful way today. He wants you to be at peace with yourself and accept the love we need to give each other. The sparks may fly but they cancel themselves. The energy is recouped.

The disconnected voice is the one who put their hand on my shoulder and my heart and said that I should not have been the one, but that it is you that has to make it two. He missed out and that it’s not his fault he is not the one, but he has pushed us together and we’ve got to figure out how to make the circle whole and not just think about what if the circle was to be broken. That will happen years from now.

We see each other and when this happens we see two brothers in Christ who are right with the Lord. Put our preconceived notions aside and embrace the truth. We were meant to be together but the disconnected voice is cheering us on.

The voice is saying that you have got to stop and you are able to accept the love of God and that God is the one who is making this happen. We have to know that God works in mysterious ways and he said that we need to make it so. Hold. Cradle. Engulf. Be one to each other. “You’ll never find another one like this again and this is what it is.”

Listen okay listen I understand the appeal of Stan/Kyle I FULLY understand the appeal. but I’m a Kyle/Cartman girl through and through. I’m sorry OKAY I’m sorry. The good thing about this though is I have absolutely no expectations of it ever happening and it would be bad if it did so I can have fun you know.

It’s jokes and comedy and a piece of poop talks yes but its also about the characters and them being dumb kids and sometimes character moments come through. DID YOU WATCH THE LANDSLIDE EPISODE WHEN YOU WERE A TEEN? DID YOU?? If not don’t talk to me.

Why did they have to make Kyle so handsome. Like. Notably so. 

Also Kyle definitely gave off some gay man vibes. Not being single and handsome in South Park at forty-whatever... 

The way Cartman being Jewish WASN’T a bit.

Future Stan Kyle & Cartman just sitting on a BENCH like damn we can’t stop covid, now what, and then the solution is to get their past selves to be friends again. It hits okay. They’re CHILDREN Brent. 

Very intrigued by the concept of Kenny/Butters now like in my incredibily brief forey into fanfic years ago but also years after I’d stopped watching the show I had assumed it was very much a pair the spares situation especially since Kenny’s character back in the day was mostly being the Horny for Titties one. But the fact that they stayed working together the whole time in the covid special? Is there something I missed the last decade maybe. 

I DID feel bad for Cartman at the end even though that probably wasn’t the point. But I did feel bad. The show got the gang back together as kids only to break them up again. :(

The yaoi art had exactly two people credited for it in the end game credits. Their RANGE. One of them turns up nothing conclusive on google but the other worked on DC and Marvel comics and shit. 

Yaoi Art aside the way that Creek is STILL like the most respectful that I know of a show being about fangirl shipping, like they’re actual BOYFRIENDS and have a whole ass sideplot and everything. Fucking CRAIG AND TWEEK from fucking SOUTH PARK the most respectful I am SO

Shout out to Captain Diabetes being the best fighting roster character in the game. Now I do actually know who you are from the covid special. 

The game was funny and good actually. 

The shuddering up there was a lie. I already read a fic. It wasn’t very good but here I am.

Thoughts on Batman by Jewishness?

This one's harder mostly because Batman has had like a million fucking movies and shows and I have not seen even close to all of them - I didn't even find him that compelling as a character until I got into his children. Also we're defining Batman as Bruce Wayne because obviously Dick Grayson isn't Jewish and I don't know anything about Terry McGinnis and evil future Batman!Tim Drake might be Jewish but he's essentially a recurring what if character. Ok here we go

In last place we have Batfleck. Even if Ben Affleck had any interest in portraying Bruce Wayne jewishally, he sucked and I hate him in the role, so I'm giving him a -5/10 just for being in bad movies. Fuck you pick better scripts

After that we have the Dark Knight Trilogy Batman. Extremely well made and enjoyable movies. Not much like comic Batman imo. 1/10

Next we have Battinson. I actually don't mind this movie! I don't like it nearly as much as it seemed everybody else had, and I really wish we could get a Batman movie that acknowledges he has a fucking family in the year of our lord 5783, but it's still a good movie. However, no indication that Bruce is Jewish. I do however think this Bruce is way funnier, so extra points for making me laugh out loud in the theater repeatedly. 3/10

Up next is Lego Batman from the Lego Batman movie. I don't know he just gives me good vibes. He's got a Robin, which automatically puts him closer to comic canon than any other filmic version of Batman, making him Jewish by association. 5/10 I guess

I only watched one season of Gotham but hey, it was a pretty good season before I realized what I really wanted to be watching was Smallville, which I then proceeded to watch all ten seasons of over the course of four weeks (I was in, how you say, a depression). I probably would've watched more (see: in a depression), but there was only one season in existence at the time. It seemed fine to me, although I know a lot more about Batman now than I did then, but it seemed decently connected to the spirit of the comics. Bonus points for David Mazouz being a Jewish actor - the only Jewish actor on this list fyi - but at least in the one season I watched, he was not confirmed Jewish, so let's say a 7/10 (is this technically even a Batman? I have no idea what happens in the later seasons)

Finally we have our main continuity comic book Batman, the only (afaik) canonically Jewish Batman on this list! Batman was made Jewish by association when his maternal cousin, Kate Kane aka Batwoman, was created as an explicitly Jewish character. Sidenote, she's a great character and I adore her. But yeah although he is essentially canonically Jewish it's never actually addressed within his stories - he's only ever spoken about his father being Christian and him not following in his footsteps, as far as I know. I give it a 9/10, losing a point for only being Jewish on a technicality. DC, like Marvel, are also cowards

Honorable mention to any animated movie based directly on a comic such as the Under the Red Hood movie being Jewish by association as well. Let's give that archetype of Bruce a 7.5/10

He's nervous.

Which is insane, because he's never nervous. He gets on stage in front of millions of people, and it doesn't make him nervous, but apparently, showing up at Midge Maisel's home for Rosh Hashana dinner makes him fucking nervous.

But here he is, holding a jar of honey ("we always run out!"), knocking on the door, waiting for it to open.

And when it does, there's chaos.

Well, there's Midge, standing there, beaming at him, while two kids run by and there's loud talking from within.

"You made it!" she cries, leaning in to kiss his cheek, taking his arm and leading him in. "Come on in!"

It really is chaos. There are a lot of people. Five kids of varying very young ages, and around ten adults, all chattering and arguing around the living room, dining room and kitchen.

"Oh, lord," Shy mutters. "What the hell have I gotten myself into?"

"A room full of Jews," Midge smiles. "But you're in luck, because Rosh Hashana is like Judaism for beginners. No fasting, no waiting to eat, lots of good food."

"Hey! Shy Baldwin is here!"

That's the ex-husband, who embarrassed the hell out of himself the last time Shy saw him, and his outburst causes the room to go silent.

Midge grins. "Everyone, I told you I invited Shy for New Years."

"Yes, but we didn't think you were telling the truth," Shirley says, shocked.

"Ma!" Joel cries.

"Welcome to the madhouse," Mei waves. "They're all extremely white, extremely Jewish, and very loud."

"I got that impression," Shy chuckles.

Fairly soon, all of the chatter starts up again, and Shy finds himself sitting with Lenny in the kitchen while Midge wraps up cooking.

"God it smells good in here," Shy comments.

"I've married myself a domestic goddess," Lenny jokes. "Brisket in the oven, fresh, homemade challah on the table, and some of the best dick jokes in the business." He snaps at that last comment, an it makes both Shy and Midge laugh.

"So, which relative is gonna be creepily racist tonight, Midge?" Shy teases. "My money is on the old blonde."

"She's a frontrunner for sure," Midge laughs. "But, her daughter-in-law is the Chinese girl who warned you about all of us white folks, so she might be able to reel it in."

Shy looks impressed. "A surprise."

"Astrid's got a big mouth and no filter," Lenny comments.

"Leave Astrid alone, she's anxious enough," Midge scolds. "My sister-in-law. She converted to try and fit in better with the family."

"Did it work?"

"Nope. Still an anxiety-ridden blabbermouth who now just sings really loudly during services," Midge tells him.

"Moishe?" Lenny supplies.

"Oh, yeah, maybe," Midge nods. "Could be Moishe. Or! Maybe it'll be no one and everyone will behave like human beings and not shit all over our guest who very kindly brought us more honey."

"See? She really is funny," Lenny chuckles.

"Who wants to taste test the soup?"

Both men scramble to their feet to get in line and she hands each of them a spoon for tasting, Lenny going back in for another spoonful.

"Lenny!"

"It's good, it's a compliment!"

"More peppercorn," Shy tells her, reaching out for the jar of pink peppercorns, and Midge grins as she steps back to let him doctor the soup.

"You never let me doctor the soup," Lenny complains.

"Lenny," she says seriously. "Sweetest man alive. Love of my life. You cannot cook."

"And Shy can?"

"He used to help his mother in the kitchen."

"Well, my mother didn't cook," Lenny defends. "She stripped, but she did not cook."

"I know, which is why you are my favorite taste-tester and not allowed to adjust the seasoning."

Shy hands her a spoon. "Try now."

She does and her eyes widen. "Mmm. It pops!"

Shy laughs. "It certainly does."

Lenny tries next and nods. "Okay, yeah. That's better."

"I'm making a note," Midge says hurriedly, rushing around to grab for her recipe book. "Extra peppercorn."

Shy chuckles and tries a little more, nodding in satisfaction.

Those Ancient Laws

Reading any classical work, from any civilisation up until the beginning of our modern age, and you will see that these same customs everywhere. egyptian, canaanite, jewish, roman, greek, chinese, hindu, christian, muslim; even the fucking aztecs  these ‘ancient commandments’ were so important in the culture and daily lives of all these people that they are barely even explicitly stated, despite being implicit throughout everything they writ and did. the best example of this is marriage. everywhere, every single culture on earth has some form of it; yet the precise laws, ceremonies, and customs of it vary wildly. monogamy? polygamy? dowries? divorce? remarriage? taboos around sex itself? the bafflingly widespread custom of wife-kidnapping? etc etc etc yet in some form, it exists everywhere and only perhaps in this modern age has its importance lessened.

i believe there are two possible hypotheses for this: 1. that God himself, the LORD almighty, proclaimed these laws unto all peoples in the most ancient days; hence why the pagans (all of them) kept these customs and believed them just as important as the israelites, and later christian and muslim nations did. 2. that these behaviours are simply the result of convergent evolution, that the ancients found that this was simply the best most efficient way of maintaining a functioning society.

these hypothetical commandments (as far as i can tell) were thus:

marriage

purity

hospitality

worship

royalty

priesthood

sacrifice

now, before you read on, please note that this is not a theory which makes me happy. neither am i some kind of weird neotrad misogynist who believes this is all good actually and that we must retvrn. its actually something i find immensely troubling. these laws began to fall away as the world became more moral.  as women began to be seen as equal, as slavery was abolished, free thought---------etcetcwritemorebetterlater elaboration:- ~.~.~.~.~.~.~

hospitality *to always be kind, welcoming, and helpful to any guest, visitor, or stranger - for any stranger may be an angel, or a god in disguise. *to give charity to the poor

worship worship is something few of us today understand. how often do you worship is complete loyalty, respect and obedience.  that the child should respect and obey the parent. that the woman should respect and obey her man. that the slave should respect and obey the master. that the serf should respect and obey the lord. that the people should respect and obey their king or leader. that everyone all should respect and obey the LORD God almighty. that an individual should know their place, and obey their betters; and treat those below them well as they would wish to be treated.

royalty that might makes right. that the defeated should submit to the victor. that the strong should protect the weak, that the rich should take care of the poor. strength and beauty are the pride and glory of earthly creatures - therefore let only the proudest of men dare lift their faces up to heaven, and let them compare with the majesty of the LORD. a king must be worthy of worship, and may be usurped if he acts unkingly and loses favour. but a king has the right to impose a taboo upon his people, or to wage war against another kingdom; however the warrior-nobility must always submit to the priesthood.

priesthood that there are those who are set apart to live a holy life. and they must not perform ordinary work, but must live on donations and devote their lives to preserving these above commandments.  that is: keeping the hours, being righteous, performing the sacred rites such as blessings, weddings, and funerals. remaining pure. commanding festivals, guiding the people, and instructing them. being hospitable to guests, and helping the poor and unfortunate. all in worship of the LORD. the priesthood must maintain loyalty to the ruling class, performing an advisory function; but with the power to challenge any royal proclamation and veto any proposal.

taboos taboos are variable or temporary laws which an authority may enact in response to various circumstances, so long as they do not infringe upon the previous commandments.  ie; a mothers word is law over her children,   but her husbands word is law over her,   but the kings word is law over him and her both, and the whole country;   but Gods law is The Law, and rules over-all. a king may enact various taboos, which are binding until annulled for example on the extraction/harvesting/hunting of a certain resource, making a certain piece of land forbidden, banning a certain custom or a practise; regulating commerce, imposing tariffs and/or taxes, conscripting workers/soldiers, etc etc 

sacrifice something so strange and hard for us to understand in the modern age. to purposely destroy resources. your own resources. and not just any, but only ever the best and most prize goods. their cattle, their corn. i wont even pretend to know or understand why they did this, but it was ubiquitous. maybe even more ubiquitous than misogyny.

Becoming by Michelle Obama | Memoir

This memoir follows Michelle from childhood until 2018. Her voice, her sweet family members, and the tidbits of secrets of what happened behind the White House's closed doors were the highlights of the book. Also, her strength, while the media tried to tear her to pieces for being a strong black woman in power, was really amazing to read. So many parts of the book must have hurt to write and relive, but I'm so glad I was able to glimpse all of these moments

Untamed by Glennon Doyle | Memoir, Self-Help

I've never read Doyle's earlier works, but they were apparently about how to strengthen your marriage. And then before this book, she came out as a lesbian and divorced her husband -- talk about a career move. This book really feels like a homage to stop giving fucks for anyone other than yourself and those you love. It made me laugh and think about my life, and also cheer whenever she talked about her current partner. Definitely recommend to lesbians or those who want to learn how to put themselves before anything else. (Or anyone with religious trauma).

Them: Adventures With Extremists by Jon Ronson | Non-Fiction

Jon Ronson, a Jewish journalist, hangs out and observes different extremists from different cultures and countries in a pre-9/11 world, and interviews their "enemies". This book might not be for everyone, but I think everyone should try to read it. Before social media, there were already bubbles of different groups getting terrified of "them" and dehumanizing the other until they are the boogeyman. The reason I read this book was that my parents are extremists (who would make some people in this book cringe) and I just wished I could know why they see the world that way. It's kind of funny that Leftist and Alt-Right people both believe the government don't care about us and that corporations are controlling things in a scary way. The only difference is the foundation of the Alt-Right argument is based on racism and intolerance. It makes you think.

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde | Essays, Speeches

This is a collection of essays and speeches by Audre Lorde ranging from topics of black feminism, black power, lesbian life, eroticism in real life, and more. It was incredible to read speeches in which she called out people there on their biases and bigotry. This collection should (and in some parts is) be considered a classic.

"That we not hide behind the mockeries of separations that have been imposed upon us and which so often we accept as our own. For instance, “I can’t possibly teach Black women’s writing — their experience is so different from mine.” Yet how many years have you spent teaching Plato and Shakespeare and Proust?
