Sorry, long Gale Meta thoughts on his fanon under the cut. By a Galemancer so it's very biased haha
I really hate how, all due to a bug that made Gale think you were dating, a lot of people in the fandom or otherwise see him as this easy, desperate incel man.
And that just isn't who he is.
It annoys me even more when I see some of the devs or writers accepting the fanon because I feel like it just goes against his entire personality.
When you're doing his romance normally, the pacing is pretty normal. In fact, in the full-release version of the game, Gale is fairly hesitant early on (due to the bomb).
And even when you do progress your relationship in Act 2, he's asking if it's okay, making sure you weren't just pitying him, etc.
He's not some incel mansplainer, he's the lorebook silly man like...
All of this not even including the darker side of his story, which I think, is absolutely ruined by the "Gale is a creep and falls in love with you at a glance" fanon.
Mainly because alot of it deals with self-esteem, having to prove yourself to your abusive Goddess/ex, suicidal ideation.
All of that is weakened when you have this idea of Gale as a "You looked at me once, now we're dating" kinda guy. Gale, who doesn't even use his own last name, for reasons that may include but are not limited to, self-doubt, shame, pride, etc.
In the reality of the game, romancing Gale is difficult. Well, romancing Gale Dekarios. The ENTIRE game (yes even in Act3), you're constantly reassuring him that you love him for him.
It just doesn't make sense with the idea of him being some creepy incel.
I think it really weakens his story and I hate seeing it.
And I said I wouldn't talk about the article but the more I thought about it the more it pissed me off.
P.S. The right ending for Gale is either one where he lives. Any headcanon where he lives.

right so I'm probably not going to make more posts about pressure after this point, but firstly, I really like pressure, I got really into it in the summer, and whilst I'm not as into it as of now, I just. really need to yap about the fandom.
tldr: can we all just chill and like the silly little guys
most of this is moreso about the tiktok/twitter fandom, mainly because that's most of what I've seen of the fandom, but genuinely, I think people are harassing the devs for genuinely no reason, and I'm going to look at all of the major issues that have been had that I can think of.
so firstly, the whole zerum stuff. I honestly always found it ridiculous, so I might be a little biased, but it was never a case where you couldn't ship yourself or your oc with sebastian, it was only for the discord server, and it was literally clarified at some point, that it wasn't even zerum's idea, and the only reason shipping is banned, is purely because zeal and zerum are uncomfortable with it. you can ship yourself/an oc with sebastian outside of the server, and you'll be fine. AND EVEN THEN the rule isn't specifically 'don't ship sebastian with anyone' it's only 'don't post ship art'. THAT is what zeal and zerum are uncomfortable with, and it's just annoying how many people are trying to twist that specific rule into being a thing against them.
SIMILARLY the voicelines about sebastian being married to zerum? not in the game. most of the voicelines (iirc) are either from the regretevator crossover, where you can get the sebastian's wares floor (and similarly get the sebastian got you badge) or just stuff they got Gianni to say. the most we have in the actual game is just a ring on one of his fingers, nothing actual verbal in game, and of which is relatively easy to ignore. I just believe the whole thing just got over exaggerated, and honestly, it's genuinely not that bad.
next up, the thalassophobia toggle. obviously, yes, I agree that it's a bit of a dick move to have a thalassophobia toggle in the settings, of which literally just kicks you from the game, but admittedly, there was literally no way they could remove everything to do with thalassophobia. like yes, sure, muffling the ocean noises at points could've helped, but that's literally ignoring the fact that the room order is randomly generated, and you are EXTREMELY likely to encounter one or two rooms where you have to dive, and not to mention, at the ridge, there a portion where you have to dive regardless, which literally involves visually being in what appears to be the ocean. so whilst I understand why people got upset, there is literally no way for the devs to have been able to remove every single thing related to the ocean, especially since most creatures in the game is either a sea creature or has some sort of link to the ocean (minus pAInter, maybe imaginary friend and the trench bleeders).
and now, the most recent one. whilst I don't think this is as bad as the other two and from what I've seen not many people have been saying anything negative about it, I think it's still worth to mention. recently, zeal mentioned on twitter that the next update would give jumpsuits as rewards to hard to obtain / unobtainable badges, however some people are getting a bit irritated about it. but admittedly, I do think that the people who played in early access/ beta should still get something for that, and sure, they have the badge, but even then, it does make sense for them to have something else, or at least to me, especially since alot of badges have been giving jumpsuits recently. it just makes sense to me, is all. that being said, I do understand why some people are irritated - the image of the jumpsuits we were shown was really pretty, so it sucks a little that those who don't play before the games proper launch won't get it, and similarly, yeah, not everyone is good enough at the game to be able to get some of the jumpsuits, but even then, we'll probably get equally pretty jumpsuits that are easier to obtain down the line, and also, pressure has always been hard, and is probably intended to be that way, so it's not surprising that the devs are trying to give people incentive to be trying to get the harder badges.
anyways, I just. think we should all chill and obsess over silly little fish (+ computer + trench bleeders)

Solas Fandom: There is little to say. I assumed we were alike. We'd seen war, knew its terrible costs, and yet understood that it was necessary. But there was nothing necessary in what you did. You did not survive death and destruction. You sowed them. To feed your own desires.
Blackwall Devs: I know that. I see it every time I look in a mirror. I try to make up for it.
Solas Fandom: By wearing another skin. You ran away rather than face what you had done.

Solas Fandom: I will remember this. When it is over.

Didn't say it was. I implied I didn't care. Uh-huh, that's right. Implied.

You better laugh. I had to ask Solas for that one.

I've been in the IF fandom for almost two years now, and I don't think I've ever found a fandom I've liked as much. I like the community here, the stories, creativity, how diverse the games are compared to other media I see.
I like reading IF, but more than that I'd really to create an IF game myself. I've been creating stories since childhood and I've always wanted to tell them to other people. However, I was never able to find a suitable medium for doing so. Creating video games is a passion that met reality and died too fast, writing traditional books makes me incredibly anxious, and comic and visual novels require way too much drawing when I'm a concept artist at best. And IF... IF seems to be exactly what I was always searching for. But here's a twist.
I'm not a writer. I'm really not. The amount of writing that I've done that wasn't for my studies is... not a lot. Which makes me extremely self-conscious of my writing, and I'm a very anxious person to start with (and English not being my native language doesn't help). I just don't know where to start, I've never even written fanfiction. And then if I end up actually writing something and posting it for people to see, I'm afraid of what they'll say, of me not being good enough, or of people being uninterested in anything I create. It's dreadful really. And I know that this feeling is possibly shared by so many other people, but I just don't know what to do about it.
I had wanted to post this earlier, but Tumblr ate my essay again...
Welcome, Anon, to the wonders of IF! Have a seat, and a cookie, and enjoy the ride! It's quite the experience, you'll see...
Totes understand your worries. With so many good projects out there, it's easy to not feel... adequate (in writing or proficiency); and with many in the community having opinions, to be unsure whether to publish said work.
But here's the thing: many of us in the IF community (especially as hobbyist) have not studied writing (for a while or at all)* or are writers either, and quite a few of us are ESL (hi, hello!)**. So you are in very good company!! *sidenote: some of us consider ourselves game dev/creators before writers too. **Dear... you wrote an essay of an ask with no mistake (that I could find) - I would not have guessed you were not a native speaker, if you hadn't said it before.
To relieve those anxious feelings, here are some advice, from one ball of anxiety to another one:
You don't have to publish anything you don't want to have public. If you prefer to write for yourself and yourself only, it's more than fine. Having fun is what matters.
There are ways to "hide" your project from searches (on itch or tumblr) to have a bit more privacy, as well as disabling replies/comments/ratings...
Setting boundaries from the beginning with people interacting with your projects (whether it is in asks, or doing beta/feedback rounds/etc...) can also be quite helpful (even if some people don't follow them...).
Join writing groups and share snippets/ask for feedback. It's helpful to get some boosts of confidence and get pointers on how to improve.
Have beta/playtest rounds for longer feedback needs (like when you are ready to upload/update a demo, to catch bugs or typos and stuff).
Joining game jams with small projects can help with testing ideas/stories/gameplay, and get comments/feedback from people.
Anyway, we all start somewhere, and very often (most always) that somewhere is not good at all. But that's ok :) There's always room and time for improvement and change (until you're finally happy with it). The beauty of online games is that you can always tweak it and fix it when something doesn't feel right. Nothing is ever set in stone!
Good luck :)

Yeah I agree with you, I understand why people are worried about the state of AJ Classic, but I really wish people would stop downright doomposting or otherwise being real weird about Wildworks and the state of AJ Classic. Like, this is coming from a really long time AJ player who used to be incredibly active in the fandom until the fer.al stuff happened... that stuff was atrocious and it took me over a year to even want to play the game anymore, but I never blamed anyone who actually worked on the game in the first place (it always felt like a choice made by people who weren't that involved in the games in the first place to me, because I cannot imagine anyone who truly cares about Animal Jam and has worked on it years pulling something like that (I'm out of the loop on that so I don't know the full story though)) ...And I really don't understand why people keep acting like WW doesn't give a shit when they clearly do. Their hands are just tied on working on Classic right now because of Flash, but they're working on fixing that! And Play Wild still clearly gets a lot of love, and even if I don't play that version very much I can appriciate that!
Basically, I just think some people need to step back and appriciate the work the team is putting in, even if it's not very easy to notice on Classic's side of things
the death of fer.al WAS done by the hands of wildworks, but not because they hated the game. quite the opposite! several devs from the old fer.al server said they were sad about the fate of the game and even talked a little bit about planned NPC and story lore. unfortunately, not every decision is a good one and the development costs were sinking more than they were actually making back from the game. not at all a personal decision, but a business is a business and they're not going to continue making choices they know are bad for them, even if it sucks and we all wish it didn't happen.
the fact aj classic still exists i personally feel IS a lot of love for the game from wildworks, because frankly, what other kid's mmos can you list that are still running under the original development team? webkinz? what else? ajc has been around since 2010 and thats a REALLY long time for a flash game! and even with their limited abilities, updates ARE happening. wild weekends, rare item mondays, community contests, etc. its not a new animal, or a new land, or anything i know we all REALLY wish we could get right now, but people who write off wildworks as cold and uncaring really don't seem to notice everything they do for the game. if they really didn't care anymore, lets be frank, ajc wouldn't BE here still. its fully self sustaining, but it's not actively profitable like ajpw. clark stacey himself said he had no plans to shut ajc down for a long, long time. youre right, and im glad i got this ask. thanks!

Alright I have two rants to do because this fandom is very exhausting.
1/ the minor one because I still saw people arguing whether or not the Fell twins are Alear's sibling and I am being like "How are you still involved into this stupid discourse it's been 6 month since the Dlc came out I though it was finally over 4 month ago (ಥ﹏ಥ)". They are confirmed to be romance, that mean they aren't. Idc if you think it makes you morally superior to acts like they are siblings when the writing doesn't treat them as such, it just makes you looks like a weirdo for arguing you can date your half sibling in a video game and dumb as it shows you don't even pay attention to the writing of said game ! And I know they aren't genuinely wanting to view Alear and them as a platonic/family relationship because if they did they wouldn't even try to argue on them being canon related. I am the first one to correct people on Byleth's lack of kinship with the Nabateans, doesn't prevent me from having some draft of Byleth acting as family with Sothie and Rhea and the whole point of Engage is that family is based on connection through bond not blood ! The only reason why they want to prove that is because they don't like the option being a thing, even though the Fell twins's relationship with Alear has no relevance in the main story outside of shipping. I am tired to see that the only thing people have to say about them is that, they don't deserves it. And I am not even saying you have no right to prefer to view them as family, if you genuinely like them like that please go on, you are doing an amazing job and have fun, but the fact that those people who argue clearly are doing it just to shame anyone who want to waifu Nel or Rafal is annoying and toxic when IS themselves allowed it to be a thing. I respect not liking it, but I don't respect using it as way to look down on others and claim to be moraly superior.
2/The biggest one because I am tired : NO liking 3H and disliking Engage doesn't make you more intelligent or superior then fans who don't. I am tired of people acting as if Engage fans had low IQ and calling us "weeb trash with no taste". This is the exact same mentality as people liking "modern trendy songs"looking down on people who likes doujin music. I am so sorry for liking a game who has an enjoyable gameplay and is an actual strategy game with funny custom and an actual place where I can take a break from the story and do little mini games, griding or skip it to my heart's content over the one that is very easy to break, punishes me for not playing it "the correct way" forcing me to do boring shores for support or training grinding, being an actual paradox of a game with features making it all easy yet punishing me for skipping the most boring part of the game with this monastery and hellish calendar system that breaks the pacing. I am sorry for liking a game with much smaller and tamer world builing using most basic references that French/European speakers like me can get over one that has this gigantic wordbuliding barely using it correctly and shoved with 1 000 of references that most people I am sure have no idea existed or are familiar with. I am sorry for liking a game that uses symbolism as a way to strenghen its narrative over one that uses symbolism as a way to tell its story. I am sorry for liking a story that actually rewards me for replaying it by letting me noticing the amount of thoughts that were put into it since it's obvious that everything was planned as confirmed by the early concept art of Alear and its sheer amount of foreshadowing and clever use of japanese over a story that objectively lacks focus and was confirmed to not be planned by the devs in the interview where they joked about 3H seeming to write itself on its own without them understanding how or about the 1000 year worth worldbuiliding that "no one truly knew about" and it shows that needs me to play all the routes to feel emotionally invested despite it not making sense with the context of said route despite having a team of 3 writers. I am sorry to prefer a tame worldbuiling I can actually explore and feel immersed into over that gigantic worldbuilings that is the epitome of tell don't show, infodumped on me 99% of the time with some of them never used again and so big that even the writers got lost into it as they confirmed themselves in the interview. I am sorry for liking the anime chessey opening that has more variety in its musicality and feels like a love song to the fans and franchise over the opening song that feels like an anime ending sung by a character who I ended up feeling nothing but indifference and that is being recycled over and over and over again in 99% of the soundtracks. I am sorry for liking a game that is so fun to replay that I have problem switching to another one over a game that is very tedious at some point and would actually gave you a burn out if you don't do some break. I am sorry for liking a game with beautiful graphics and animations, colorful, going as far as changing the sheath the character is wearing depending on which sword they are using over the game whose graphics makes it look bleak and unappealing and whose fruits looks like that
I am sorry for liking a game who had actual care and fun put into its developpement despite a lesser budget as felt throught the gameplay and the writing who despite not being the priority still felt more prepared and though about then the game who has a rushed developpement, was delayed for non covid reason, was literaly a collab because of the budget put into it and has far more cut content that were essential to its writing, including entire chapters. I am sorry for liking a game that has villain who are actual character with some depth even if they aren't morally conflicted individual over villains who are nothing of character but pure comically evil in a so called "morally grey" masterpiece and whose motivation needs you to get Buddhist references leaving room for people to make up story about how they were colonized. I am sorry for liking a game who has a satifisfactory ending over one that solve no conflict and every big thing happens off screen. I am sorry for liking a game capable of showing and not telling over one that keeps telling me stuff and barely shows anything. I am sorry for liking a game that despite being linear has a freaking bad ending over the one that is a split route and that should have some by laws but doesn't because you actually have no meaningful decision. I am sorry for liking a game where character have actual moral compass working on a moral system that speaks to my mind over one that ended up falling into moral relativism. I am sorry for liking a game whose story is much simplier and a breath of fresh air over the one who was so complex and over the top that people still have no idea what happened in said story 4 years later while keeping in mind that the only canon event is chapter 1-2. I am so so sorry for liking a game whose cast is fun and doesn't infodump you on their personal trauma 99% of the time creating convoluted backstory over a game that keeps making fun of the traumatic experience of their character and their ptsd. I am so very sorry so sorry sorry for liking a game whose protagonist might be an avatar but is an established characters with quality, flaws and struggles, dream to pursue, a character arc, character developpement, who is very endearing, whose female counterpart has an outfit that i love and has actual interaction with the cast even if it took a whole DLC to have one character having genuine chemistry with them to give me shipping brainrot over an avatar that is hated by it's own game and was the only thing I ended up liking from said game since they were the only reason why I kept on playing it and who makes me looks at them with sad eyes because of how much a spin off did them better and is the reason why the game's quality in story telling is lesser then it was supposed to be while waiting for an entire spin off to have someone having genuine chemistry with them and give me shipbrainrot. I am definetely very soorry for having things used in the game, having character whose backstory actually matter over the game that pretends to tackle serious subject but ignoring an entire freaking genocide. I am sooo very sorry for liking a game that is essentially a love letter to the franchise and to me and the others fans over one that divided the fandom into the most toxic conversation ever. Really sorry for being that stupid and tasteless.
Look, I might look like I do, but I don't hate 3H, it was still an enjoyable experience and I still think its a competent game that has a lot of strengh, but story and gameplay aren't its strengh. 3H still has one of the best cast in the entire franchise but I am tired of seeing people constantly accusing you of sheeting on the game for poiting its legitimate flaws and deluded or telling you to cope when you have actual reason to points out that there is things Engage objectively does better then 3H when it comes to writing. And I am tired to see tons of pathetic bad reviews that keeps proving to me that people lacks basic reading skills or are unable to understand the most basic and simple things with whatsmore no freaking body ever correcting their straight up wrong bad takes !! I am not saying Engage is a perfect masterpiece with no flaws, it has flaws, perfection is something that doesn't exist but the amount of bad faith criticism against that game is just baffling and it makes it worse since for some reason if you are an Engage fan and have some critics against 3H's way of handling things then you are automatically "just salty and jealous because 3h is more awesome then that L boring anime story" creating a magic shiel against critics 3h received 3 years before Engage ever came out and that we knew about it existing that are now deemed to be "being salty" or "drinking copium to thing Engage is good". I have encountered many 3H fans that are the first one to point out how the game creates its own plot holes because it was so ambitious it tripped over what it tried to do and said fans said they didn't talked as much about Engage because they though that they were less "fixing to do" which isn't surprising since the story was actually planned even if some moments still needs polishing. And I can't help but die a little inside each time I see comments or take of the style "if only we could get a game with the gameplay of Engage and the story of 3H then we would have the perfect fire emblem game" because No. Never, ever again. I don't want any more 3H style kind of story. Because I know that IS or rather KT is incapable of improving this mess. I though they would with the demo of 3 hopes seeing how it did the prologue better by miles but quickly realised they are unable to write this kind of story properly. They simply cannot improve Houses/Hopes kind of story. The perfect fire emblem would be an Engage 2.0 : not only from the gameplay, but with the story because Engage has genuinely little to improve and can be improved very easily unlike what the people who try to rewrite it completely changing the story or showing they didn't even understand it to begin with tries to gaslight you into thinking. That kind of storytelling works with Fire Emblem and is easy to do better. I want a good Fe game but a good Fe game would be an improved version of Engage's story that is to say with polishing rather then bringing back 3H kind of narrative. Never again.
And I repeat I don't hate 3H but I am tired of having to pretend it's a masterpiece and Engage is trashfire bad just because the fandom insist on comparing the incomparable when Engage ends up doing much better then 3H by far on both gameplay and storytelling, that's why I have much more fun dissecting Engage then 3H and the fandom's attitude plus the ambitions of 3H makes me less and less and less forgiving of it's flaws as time pass. And I also hate this stupid mentality that if a products fails then that means it's not finished or were made by incompetent people or had no care put into it because even if you dislike Engage, there is no denying the game is a finished products where love and care where put into and doing everything to make the player feel loved and rewarded each time they grab their switch because Engage was finished by 2019-2020 and would have launched if it were not for Covid, it might have sold less then 3H but it doesn't make it a failure because it never was supposed to and seeing the budget that was put into it, its current sale might be considered to be a success by the team compared to the game that was definetely delayed and costed much more just for the voice actors. I would never apply it to Houses because while I think it's story isn't its strengh at ALL, I can't deny that the devs genuinely wanted it to be a success on the story with the amount of references and worldbuiling showing they spend maybe days or weeks working and making researches for their work and I still enjoy 3H story analysis a lot like that super interesting essay on 3H's use of its soundtrack and I respect 3H for what it was trying to do, I even respect it more then Hopes that I did enjoyed more because it at least didn't ruin its story in an pathetic attempt to pander to the fandom as a bigger fanservice then implementing Marth and turning him into a mentor and angel guardian for Alear, because it was the biggest hommage FE could have done for its very first hero, showing how much he matured as a hero and paying hommage to his role as a Guide/Hero king.
In short I am tired to see people who don't even read the freaking game thinking they have the right to critize it and trash on it and be quoted religiously as references when freaking nobody bother correcting them even though anyone that has been paying attention to the events of the game would be able to answer their stupid bad takes that exist just for the sake of clickbaiting and looking down on other fans for loving and cherishing the love letter they have been given !!! I just want to enjoy all Fire Emblem games for what they do right and despite their flaws without having to feel like I have the IQ of a goldfish or doubting my intelligence for being able to do that. And I hate that people try to defend Engage by brining down Fe as a whole : No, Fe doesn't have all bad story, all story have their strengh and their weakness. No, Fe didn't always had bad writing, all of FE game's writing have their strengh and flaws even if some are improvements over others. And NO, FREAKING NO on Engage isn't meant to be taken seriously and wasn't meant to be good : this is a light hearted game with very vanilla shouneny writing, but it still takes itself seriously, even if it's not as much as game like Fe4 or Fe16 tried to. Yes it takes itself as seriously as Sailor Moon but when you write a vanilla kind of story that is inevitable. And BIG NO on that second part because Engage story is genuinely competent and good. Maybe not the greatest of Fe but it does more good things then bad things, it has more quality then flaws and trust me when something is really, reallly bad the redeeming quality can be counted on the finger's hand.
I am also tired to see people act as if Engage was a total failure when it is not : it still sold well for a title of this year, it still is played to this day by the likes of me, the only reason why I had to wait before buying it rather then preordering it was because I wanted to have a game I had the time to play and wanted to wait to be on holidays so I could have all my freetime occupied by it. It has people who likes it for what it is and aren't blind on its flaws, that loves the cast, loves the world building and makes content for it. And I hate that people justify comparing it to 3H by saying "we have to compare it to the previous entry" because it's not even true, would it be the case you would compare it to 3 Hopes, the game which Engage pull the rug out from under since we weren't supposed to have a Hopes in the first place but no one does that because they just want to compare it to something they think is superior to have the pleasure to trash on it while looking objective and smart just because they didn't liked it and want to feel right in doing so! To give an example, for my literary study one year ago I had to read Le Journal du Voleur by Jean Genet. I didn't liked it. My classmate didn't like it. Even the teacher didn't like it. But not because it was trash, but because it's not tasteful and is too dark for my and visibly their tastes too, to the point we had a pikachu face when our teacher told us we were studying the censored version of the book and even now I still can't believe it, and when we were finished with it, I got rid of it immediately. But objectively speaking, it has to be one of the most well written book I have ever read with a unique style and a writing showing its author is capable of turning the most rancy thing into the most poetic thing ever and you can feel it was empowering for him to write his life like that and that he loved the world he re-created. So while I wouldn't recommend it to anybody because I care about you, I will never ever claim I didn't like it because it was badly written because that would be dumb and stupid of me, it definetely deserves to be considered a literary work and I do think it's underrated for what it does with language. And if I did based things only on my taste then I'd call Houses garbage without any redeeming quality, but it's not true and we all know it.
I like both games even if I do it differentely and I can't stand people looking down on me for it or thinking I can't have genuine good points, especially when I spend over 400 hours into Engage, and I am not even counting the time I rewatched the over 1 long hour full movie version uploaded on youtube despite the salty and hateful comments just for the sake of making analysis when I could just check that because in that case I would have spend over 800 hours into the story. I even played with the JPN dub and checked the OG script to give the writing a fair chance, something I never did for any FE game before and wished I did.
If you asked me to pick Engage or 3H, I'd pick Engage any day because of how much more welcoming it is with it's simplier story and fun gameplay compared to Houses, a game that each time I had the wish to replay it ended up giving up because of how tedious it gets. I still try to be positive of Houses because of the genuine fun I had despite my personal gripes and the fact it has genius character writing, but the constant negativity against Engage to literaly worship Houses is so annoying it sour me on it, and it makes me fear that from now one every single game IS release will constantly end up being compared to 3H. I just can't.
#fire emblem#fire emblem engage#fe engage#rant#my rambles#sorry for being negative but I am in angry annoyed mood#it ended up being longer then I though#im so tired#i can't take anymore the stupid takes on that game and the constant hatred it gets

lmao i told my dad about hogwarts legacy and how disappointing and gross the plot was, because we've both always shared a love of harry potter with each other and i figured he'd wanna know why i wasn't playing the hot new harry potter rpg. i started by saying a lot of people were boycotting it and explained how the goblins in the books are commonly seen as antisemitic caricatures and that maybe when jkr wrote the books she didn't realize what she was doing because antisemitic goblin folklore is so old and pervasive in fantasy--and he said "ah, so instead of fixing those problems now that people know better they just kept all that in there?"
he was so shocked when i said, no, they made the problem WORSE, because he could not imagine how the devs could manage to make such a problem even worse. but then he understood what i was getting at with things like "it's about you stamping out a goblin rebellion" and "oh by the way, the goblins kidnap wizard babies and use their blood for evil rituals" without me having to explain further, and said it was pretty awful how they were doubling down on the antisemitism. i told him about the lead developer being an alt-right youtuber as well.
i also told him how excited i was for it before we knew anything about the plot but that i wasn't interested anymore because the goblin stuff would be bugging me the whole time, and i didn't want my money to go to jk rowling and the devs of this shit game, and how much it sucks that they (as in jkr and the devs) keep destroying something that so many people loved. and then. i said "i know a ton of people are still gonna buy it and jk rowling is just gonna make a bunch of money anyway, but--". and he said "but she can make a little less money if you don't buy it!"
why is it so easy for my 63 year old dad to get this shit but none of the people willfully ignoring the problems with this game just for the sake of their own entertainment get it lmao. seriously why is every single person who still enjoys HP but claims to hate jk rowling not the most pissed off about this!! this isn't something that can be critically enjoyed, it's just gross and harmful and enjoying the books and movies doesn't also require you to play this stupid game. i wish we lived in a world where this game had a safe, normal plot as free of JKR's bigotry as a HP game can possibly be and the whole fandom could just pirate it like i was originally going to, or better yet, a world where jkr wasn't a disgusting TERF in the first place, but we don't!
#ughhhh#seriously debated whether or not to even post this#but i feel like i need to make it as clear as possible what i think of this stupid fucking game#i'm so glad my dad has more than 2 brain cells unlike many people on this cursed website#hp#antisemitism tw

Wax Artist and the Fandom
Alright so I have a LOT to unpack right now with Wax Artist as well as the fandom and how they go about treating wax artist mains and the character as a whole. I would like to say before I start that I am black. However I main Wax Artist. I ended up spending like $300 to get his S tier skin, and then everyone found about about the whole Physiognomy bullshit. As someone who doesn't typically have that kind of money anymore, Its tragic HAHAHA like genuinely it sucks. Had I known perhaps I wouldn't have tried to get it. But I digress.
So what's the whole issue here other than Philippe being a racist? Well. I want to bring up a few points in this post about why I think half the shit the fandom says about him is stupid AND why I think attacking his players (who have no control over his story) is ridiculous and childish.
No one is taking an effort to reach out to devs about the psysiognomy. Like how are you gonna tell myself and other wax artist mains to kill ourselves or call us racist for playing a character that we LITERALLY cannot control. I've had like 3 people (including an old friend who said it as a "joke") call me a disgrace to black people for maining him. Yknow how bad that hurts? As someone who's of mixed race and doesn't feel like they fit in anywhere, that shit absolutely sucks.
People are asking for NE to remove Wax Artist from the game as a whole. Now this one, I can understand to an extent. However, many people do not want this. His backstory (MINUS PHYSIOGNOMY) is interesting, certain headcanons make his character so much more fun; like him just being a silly man who makes wax sculptures, etc. His character design is interesting and very pleasing, It really shows his mental and physical decline as well. All characters have some importance in the story, Wax Artists importance is unknown but I bet he plays a bigger part and will somewhere down the line.
Most white characters are likely racist depending on the time period. It's obvious that not everyone who's white in the game is racist, like historically not everyone was. However given the time period of some of these characters, there's a good chance they could potentially be racist. Now of course this doesn't excuse the fact that Wax Artist is problematic, but I feel like in a realistic sense people tend not to think about where these characters are from AND when they were/are alive. Do I want ANY of the characters to be racist? Absolutely not, but I do strongly believe that given the time periods, it wouldn't surprise me if more white characters had some sort of racist ideology that just wasn't brought up yet.
A lot of people aren't even aware of the racist undertone in Wax Artist's story. I have been playing Wax artist for over a year now and the amount of people I've met who don't even know Wax Artist's story is problematic is insane. Like I'll say he's racist and people are like "wait deadass??" It's nuts. I get these sort of encounters nearly everytime I talk to a player. It's important people know about this issue so we can push for change. I haven't seen a single person try to change his backstory and that fucking sucks. I've seen what we can do when we all come together, and this change could be made so quickly if we work together.
Perhaps there are other things that could've been said but these are the main ones that I think about. I GENUINELY believe we could make the change to Wax Artist's story if the fanbase just listens. I've tried countless time to spread the word on Twitter, but that proved to be a fruitless task. I'm hoping that here I could spread the word a bit more in asking that you email NE and ask them to remove physiognomy from his story as a whole, because believe me I 100% believe his story doesn't need this element at all. He could just be a criminologist who makes wax figures. Easy. So please PLEASE help me out here, I've been practically begging for months now and it's getting exhausting.
NE emails:
or preferably you can comment on identity V's posts asking for the removal of physiognomy from his story. From here on out I'm just gonna keep asking for it every chance I get because otherwise they won't listen. My voice alone will not be enough, so please help out!
thank you so much for reading and I hope you consider helping out. This is very important to me and other wax artist enthusiasts.

“Why wasn’t Life is Strange 2 as popular as the first game?”
A lot of people like myself have wondered what exactly made Life is Strange 2 go so relatively unnoticed compared its predecessor, Life is Strange 1. And when you think about it, you may come up with the few obvious generic answers, such as the lack of Max and Chloe and just the original cast in general. However, I think there was a lot more at play here that prevented Life is Strange 2 from reaching the amount of success/popularity the first game had. So I want to take the time and break down what exactly happened to Life is Strange 2 and the things that hurt the game’s ability to really connect with the audience of LiS1.
Disclaimer: We do NOT know how well Life is Strange 2 was for Dontnod and if it was a success or not. No sales numbers have been given out to the public so there’s no way of knowing for sure how well the game did. What we do know is that LiS2 did not receive the same amount of attention/popularity as the first game. That can’t be denied, it simply didn’t. However, based on the fact that Dontnod have recently announced they are working on six new games at the moment and are now expanding their studio, even if LiS2 was a “flop” it doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect on them (most likely due to the success of Vampyr). Dontnod is going to be fine either way. Another thing I want to mention is that this is not a anti-LiS2 post and that I am a fan of the game. I’d consider myself a pretty big fan actually. I have my problems with the game of course and don’t agree with a lot of the writing decisions but I enjoyed the game very much overall. But for the sake of this post I will try to be as unbiased as possible, giving out only what I’ve observed when it comes to reactions from the fandom on different websites and forums. So with that all being said, let’s dive in to this.
Here I will be listing the many different reasons as to why Life is Strange 2 failed to reach the same amount of popularity as LiS1 or even BtS managed to achieve. This list isn’t in any particular order but some reasons are bigger/more important than others.
For some background, there was a lot of hype going into Life is Strange 2. The teaser trailer for it with the cop car trended at #2 on YouTube, a huge feat for the series. It generated immense amount of views and comments in a short period in time, completely surpassing Before the Storm’s announcement trailer in just a few weeks. So what exactly happened to all that hype? Where did everybody go? Well, let’s break everything down.
1. The lack of Max and Chloe: Yes I said that this list wouldn’t be in any particular order in terms of importance but I think it’s obvious this one is one of, if not the biggest reason as to why LiS2 failed to match LiS1’s popularity. When the protagonists Sean and Daniel were first revealed, the reception was pretty divisive. Specifically, a very vocal part of the community were baffled and disappointed at the lack of Max and Chloe present within the trailer and subsequently the game itself. This instantly turned off a lot of people from the game, as they couldn’t connect with the new characters or simply didn’t want to. At that point in the franchise Max and Chloe as well as the original cast from the first game had been the face of the series for almost three years. It’s understandable why it was hard for people to just…move on. To this day people are still asking for Max and Chloe to return. The Life is Strange subreddit is still dominated with Max and Chloe fanart. Whenever the social media accounts for Life is Strange post anything Max and Chloe related it gets way more attention compared to a post about Sean and Daniel. Whenever a post online goes viral about Life is Strange you can bet it’s most likely about Max and Chloe. Hell the only reason why episode 5 of Life is Strange 2 trended on Tumblr was because of the fucking picture of Max and Chloe. On the releas day of episode 5 of LiS2 the top post on the subreddit was the Max and Chloe picture. It was almost as if that one photo of them completely overshadowed the entire episode. Point is, Life is Strange 2 lost a lot of momentum the moment it was revealed Max and Chloe would not be present. Case closed, let’s move on.
2. The release schedule: Words cannot describe how frustrating the release schedule was for LiS2 when it came to it’s episodes. For those reading this who didn’t follow LiS2 until the game was finished, each episode took around 3-4 months to be released. This was because Dontnod bit off a bit more than they could chew with the road trip story in having to create new locations and character models from scratch. The reason why this wasn’t a problem for LiS1 was because Max was for the most part always in the same locations around the same characters (I’m pretty sure you roam around Chloe’s house like 4 times throughout the season), which made development a lot easier since the devs could just reuse a lot of the assets. Unfortunately, this wasn’t possible for LiS2 due to the nature of it’s story. The wait times between each episode made a lot of people leave the fandom due to loosing interest or simply forgetting about the game altogether. This also impacted youtubers/streamers as many of them either stopped coming back to play the new episodes or they’d not be as connected as they were in the previous episode due to the amount of time that had passed. One of the reasons why LiS1 gained so much popularity was because of youtubers/streamers and how they would bring in their audience and would pretty much make them fans of the series. With quite a handful of youtubers/streamers quitting LiS2, the game was not able to draw in as much of an audience as previous games did. This is how detreminetal the release schedule was for LiS2.
3. The marketing (or lack thereof): Square Enix really fucked up on this aspect. Due to the ridiculous wait times you would think Square Enix would try and advertise the game heavily when a new episode was about to be released, right? Well they didn’t. Not at all actually. Throughout the games release schedule from September 2018 up to December 2019, I had not seen a single ad for the game. Nothing on YouTube, nothing on reddit or any other websites, it was like Square Enix had completely forgotten about the game’s existence. Now don’t get me wrong, SE did do a few things with LiS2 like starting up the community series on their YouTube channel and also the dev updates that came after episode 1 (that stopped after episode 2 for some reason) but these went relatively unnoticed to people outside of the fandom and did pretty much nothing. I believe SE was trying to wait until the game was fully complete with all of it’s episodes released before actually marketing the game (and they DID start advertising the game after episode 5 came out) but that’s just WAAAY too long to go without any type of advertisement. I understand marketing teams have budgets and what not, but you’re telling me there was no way for SE to market each episode in anyway as they were about to be released? Seems a bit ridiculous, don’t you think?
4. The road trip story: I completely understand why Dontnod wanted to branch out and do something different with the story of Life is Strange 2 and I respect them for stepping out of their comfort zones. However, it can’t be denied that the road trip story where characters are cycled in and out as Sean and Daniel make their way to Mexico was a very…questionable decision. Seeing as how LiS1 was loved for it’s world filled with a reoccurring cast of characters that developed as the story went on, it’s really easy to understand why LiS2 was so off-putting for a lot of fans. It was off-putting for me, even. It just…wasn’t fun having to leave these truly interesting characters behind because the plot demanded it. This left a lot of characters feeling underdeveloped to many people and by the time you meet new characters you already know they’re most likely gonna be gone soon anyways, so it made it even harder to connect with them. Couple this with the fact that LiS2 lacked any type of mystery unlike LiS1, speculation and discussion fizzled out a few weeks after each episode was released. LiS1 kept people speculating and wondering about what would happen next, while LiS2 left a lot of people struggling to care.
5. Politics: Yeeeeaaaaah I think I had to put this somewhere on the list. While many of the people who tease and mock how LiS2 handled its political topics were most likely not fans of the series anyway (the type of people who called LiS1 “Life is Tumblr” and hate Chloe), I do think it’s important to realize that some people just don’t want politics in their games, period. I’ve seen people online come out and say that while they agreed with what the writers were saying when it came to the political topics, it overall still came off very forced and one-sided to them, lacking any type of nuance or subtlety. I could write an entire essay discussing if the politics in LiS2 were handled well and whatnot but this is not that post so I’ll just leave it at that.
6: Lack of a prominent female cast/wlw: This is a bit more tricky to talk about (for the record the person writing this is a black gay guy) but I will try and write about this the best way I can. For many women, specifically queer women, Life is Strange was a series they could expect representation from. Max, Chloe, Rachel, and Steph are all popular characters amongst the fandom and even other wlw ships such as Marshfield, Chasefield, Chaseprice, etc are popular. So when LiS2 was revealed to be about two (hispanic) males, the queer women within the community were understandably upset. It felt like DN were simply throwing away the community that for the most part made up the entire fandom. At the time I simply found the situation ridiculous and overblown as many people were dismissing Sean and Daniel as “generic straight males” (even though it turned out Sean was bisexual in the end) before really getting to know them. However, looking back I totally get why people were upset. A lot of the fanart/fanfiction that was made for the LiS series was mostly created by queer women, so when the franchise pretty much stopped giving them representation, they left in search of other media (like She-Ra, which honestly has better wlw rep anyway). LiS2 is also mostly male dominated in terms of its cast, and features no queer women as well, which is really disappointing in my opinion.
7. Price: This one is pretty simple. When Life is Strange 2 was first released the full season costed $40. This was a pretty big jump in comparison to LiS1’s $20 price tag (original price was $25 however) and BtS’s $16. Obviously people would be more skeptical about buying a sequel that is pretty much double the price of its predecessor and has completely new characters. With the pretty mixed reception from gaming communities I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people saw the price and decided to either watch a playthrough or simply not check out the game at all. With the first episode now free the base price has been lowered to around $30-32 I believe so yeah.
8. Daniel Diaz: Some people just don’t like kids, and I wouldn’t be surprised if people grew easily frustrated with Daniel early on and once he got more irrational and bratty as the story progressed they just stopped playing altogether. Even if you do like kids, or at least don’t mind them like myself, Daniel can still be quite a pain.
9. Not having control of the powers: This one is honestly really disappointing and I know it was to a lot of other people as well. In LiS1 Max had the ability to rewind time and do certain scenarios and conversations over and that basically acted as the more interesting gameplay segments. In LiS2 Sean doesn’t have the power, his brother Daniel does. This leads to the gameplay feeling much more boring and mundane. There are also no interesting puzzles this time around, most likely because Dontnod didn’t know how to implement them without the rewind power so they just…didn’t even attempt to add any. The power itself, telekinesis, is also much less interesting compared to rewinding time, according to a lot of people.
SO YEAH that’s basically it for me. I know this probably came off a bit rambly/incoherent but I tried my best to be as clear as I possibly could. I don’t doubt there are other reasons at play as to why LiS2 failed to meet LiS1’s success (such as liscensed music not being quite as good as LiS1) but I think I hit the main points I believe were key reasons. And the thing is, there isn’t just one main reason why LiS2 didn’t do as well as LiS1. It’s overall very unfortunate so many things went wrong with it that ended up making people lose interest in it. I think the lack of Max and Chloe hurt the game the most right off the bat, but the other reasons just led it to do even worse. Oh well.
I hope any of the people who read this enjoyed it (it was a BITCH to write). I’ve been wanting to get my thoughts down about this for SO long but just never had the motivation/time but I finally did it!
Again, thanks for reading! If you have any disagreements or just thoughts in general don’t be afraid to reply or dm me about it and I’ll be sure to reply! Now back to reblogging Marco posts….

Parascientific Escape: The sci-fi “escape room” visual novel-style series nobody talks about
I can’t help thinking that Parascientific Escape would probably have an active fandom somewhere on the Internet if it wasn’t TRAPPED ON THE 3DS ESHOP.
I mean, it’s an escape room-centric visual novel-style sci-fi Japanese game that is clearly inspired by Zero Escape and very anime in its style. There are endearing characters, including optimal waifus/husbandos, plus a gradual buildup of an interesting fictional world full of political intrigue, its own countries, its own companies, and of course... psychic powers. Because you can’t have a trilogy of Japanese visual novel-style games featuring escape room puzzles without mental powers, now can you?
But as I said... they’re trapped as download-only titles for the 3DS. That’s fucking brutal.
Even so, there’s a pretty big 3DS/2DS user base still in existence. It’s not like they’ve never been translated or something, so at least we have the capability to play them. So if you look into them, what are you getting?
A basic overview: Parascientific Escape is a trilogy of anime-style games about solving escape room mysteries and tracking down evildoers via the use of psychic powers (obvious Zero Escape influences). There’s an overarching plot about a mysterious mastermind who believes it’s time for the recently emerged psychics of the world to take their place as the next evolution of humanity and get their own nation (obvious X-Men influences).
They don’t work very well as standalone stories; each story relies on information from the last one, culminating in a game that stars the protagonists of both parts 1 and 2 together as they finally unravel the motivations behind the events of the whole series and face off with the people behind everything. In addition, the escape room puzzles start out pretty easy in the first game build to be pretty frustratingly obtuse by the tail end of the third. And on top of all that, each game taken on its own only contains about 3-4 escape rooms. So when you bundle all three together, that’s when it all works as a single satisfying package.
Don’t worry about burning a lot of cash to play the whole series, however. The three games are $5.00 US each on the 3DS eShop and are usually on sale for $2.50 each these days. I got the entire trilogy for $7.50 US!
So let’s break down the gameplay and setup in a little more detail. Don’t worry; I won’t give any spoilers that go beyond the first five minutes of any game in the series. The twists and turns are part of the fun here.
The first game is Parascientific Escape: Cruise in the Distant Seas. You play as Hitomi Akeneno, a high school girl (because of course she’s a high-schooler) with the dual abilities of mild telekinesis and a type of clairvoyance that lets her peer past barriers or into the insides of objects. She finds herself trapped on a sinking cruise ship where some mastermind keeps systematically locking her into isolated sections while she’s trying desperately to escape.
I really liked how you could look inside of an object with clairvoyance and then use her telekinesis to manipulate the various switches and levers within, gradually pulling some object you need out from within a maze. I also thought it was clever how the solution to a new escape roomight require you to backtrack to a previous escape room to investigate some object or area that wasn’t relevant to that previous room’s original puzzle.
(One of the things I found most fascinating about this one is the ethical debate raised by Hitomi’s friend Chisono regarding how Hitomi got herself involved in all this. Chisono offers a perspective that is extremely unusual to see in most fiction. You can even say it’s pretty cold, but it’s not without having some merit to it. I don’t want to say too much about what I’m talking about, though; it’s better left as a surprise.)
The second title, Parascientific Escape: Gear Detective, almost seems standalone at first. You play as Kyosuke Ayana, a private detective and actual adult (!) who is 22 years old. A young woman shows up at his office and asks to hire him for protection. See, there’s a serial killer on the loose, and she believes she’s the next target.
We are swiftly told that Kyosuke was once in an accident that necessitated the replacement of his left arm and right eye. He volunteered to be a guinea pig for some very special prosthetics that granted him artificial psychic powers. As such, he now has “chronokinesis” — to the power to look back in time. However, he can only look back for five days, and he only has limited ability to move or manipulate the things he sees in the past.
Naturally, Kyosuke’s investigation winds up trapping him within some escape rooms that require use of his unique abilities to solve. Some of the hints at the proper timestamps or exactly where you should be looking when you peer into the past are a little vague, though, which can cause momentary frustration. Because I like to always be making forward progress, I actually preferred Hitomi’s telekinesis/clairvoyance powers from the first game. Still, Hitomi had some pretty basic puzzles in her rooms. I can’t deny that these puzzles took more thought.
Outside of the escape rooms, everything is undeniably a huge improvement. The first game presented strictly linear segments of storytelling between the rooms, but this one is more of an adventure game. You can choose where you go, select from a limited menu of things to do when you get there, and do all of it in any order you like. There’s usually a correct sequence order to progressing the story, but it’s typically pretty clear what the next step is, so it’s not like you’re just flailing about and trying a bunch of locations blindly. Besides, there’s no way to get stuck, so don’t stress it. There are even a lot of actions you can take that have no impact on story progression at all — they’re just there to generate additional dialogue that further develops the characters.
The tradeoff is that you actually get fewer escape rooms overall. The first game had four, but the second only contains three. This is also the first game in the series to introduce multiple endings; you get a number of dialogue choices throughout, and unfortunately, it’s far too easy to trigger the “bad” ending. There are guides online to help you trigger the Gold Star “true” ending, however. Just hit up GameFAQs. You might want to use the guide on your first playthrough, because I can say from experience that it’s annoying to have to replay all the dialogue sections just to make the correct choices. (Luckily, you can skip over any irrelevant sections of each chapter — including the escape room puzzles.)
In spite of my above whining, the second one is probably my single favorite story in the Parascientific trilogy. It’s a lot of fun.
The final game in the trilogy is Parascientific Escape: Crossing at the Farthest Horizon. Mysterious characters who were plotting offscreen for the previous two games are finally given faces, locations that were talked about extensively in both are finally visited, and the two protagonists of the first couple games finally meet and team up. It’s absolutely a culmination of what they set up in the first two.
The narrative jumps around from the perspectives of many different characters, but the most time is undoubtedly spent with Hitomi and Kyosuke. Sadly, there is no gameplay usage of Hitomi’s powers this time; the escape rooms are all done with Kyosuke, and they are more devious now than ever before. Personally, I found the next-to-last one to be incredibly obtuse and frustrating. I ultimately had to consult a video playthrough on YouTube for that. (The YouTuber in question didn’t seem to have the same issues figuring things out that I did. So I guess your mileage may vary.)
The “adventure game” segments make a return here as well, although they’ve also become a bit tougher to figure out. There are a couple of times when you might find yourself wandering the various location options, clicking on every possible action to try and progress. Luckily, there aren’t so many default options that you’re left flailing for very long. Even the longest period of clueless wandering lasted me a maximum of 15 minutes.
Once again, you have to make the correct dialogue choices if you want a positive ending. And once again, GameFAQs is your friend and co-pilot.
Ultimately, even the gated endings and occasional puzzle frustrations did little to curb my enthusiasm. I really had fun with these characters and their stories, I greatly enjoyed the majority of the escape rooms, and I was pretty satisfied with how it all wrapped up. The character designs/artwork get better and better as the series goes on. The selection of music tracks may be the same throughout the whole series, but I really dug on them, so I can’t complain. Do I have any other misgivings? Well, just one; the English localization is pretty sloppy. There are a pretty large number of typos, and the dialogue can sound stilted and awkward at times due to being a direct translation. It’s actually at its worst at the start of the first game. Luckily, after about 30 minutes of playtime, it settles in and finds its voice.
Seriously, they should really figure out a way to re-package these games for another system that doesn’t use the the dual-screen setup. Put all three of them together, and it’d easily be satisfying as a full retail release!
But for now, if you have a 3DS/2DS, they’re only $7.50 in total most of the time (and $15.00 at the worst). Do you like adventure game-style mysteries and visual novel-esque progression and, of course, escape rooms? You should give these a shot! And I hope these devs get to make games with bigger budgets and better localizations in the future.

Shooter by Amputation (K+, 1,406 w. || Post-TRF, Suspense, BAMF!John) – The men were trying to rile the other into acting first, it seemed. How boringly predictable and dull this was!

In Which John is a BAMFy MoFo, OMG! by Kantayra (T, 1,835 w., 1 Ch. || Humour) – John's BAMFness and Sherlock's damsel-in-distress act are caught forever on camera. So Scotland Yard can mock. A lot.
Coming Full Circle by KCS (K+, 2,358 w., 1 Ch. || Alternate TGG, Friendship, Drama, Violence/Death References, Drugging/Poisoning, Kidnapping, BAMF John, Moriarty POV, Introspection) – Moriarty had John for almost six hours between his abduction and the showdown at the pool - more than enough time to implement a Plan B for his escape should Sherlock call his bluff with the fake bomb vest.
Butterfly, Pinned Under Glass by billiethepoet (E, 4,648 w., 1 Ch. || Possessive Sherlock, Jealousy, Barebacking, BAMF!John) – It started as a desire to keep John safe and whole, and ended up as just desire.

What would you have me do? Take up jogging? Yoga? Oh! Unless you mean –” “I don't mean anything. Let’s drop it.”
I'm Pretty Sure This Changes Shit by cwb (E, 7,672 w., 1 Ch. || Fluff, Cudding, Doctor/Patient, Accidents, Pining Sherlock, Blow Jobs, Oral / Anal, BAMF John, Minor Injuries, Dev. Rel.) – Sherlock finds increasingly ridiculous ways to get John to patch him up after hurting himself.
Every Night I Look for You by destinationtoast (E, 8,377 w., 1 Ch. || POV John, Post-TRF, Angst, Mystery, Unsafe Sex, BAMF John) – Every night, John looks for familiar hints of Sherlock in the men he meets in bars, and he does with them all the things he wishes he’d done before. Eventually, he stumbles into a situation that Sherlock would know how to handle, and John must decide whether he can handle it without him.
Made for You by Raxicoricofallapatorious (K, 8,440 w., 1 Ch. || Friendship, Sci-Fi, Androids) – When John was shot in the shoulder he was decommissioned and his memory and personality was wiped. Sherlock was given the blank droid and he quickly learns that this droid is more than it seems. John just so happened to come back and no one can fathom how or why. Johnlock if you squint.
Matters of National Security by mistyzeo (E, 8,465 w., 1 Ch. || BAMF John, Doctor John, Jealous Sherlock, Dating, Bisexuality, Arguing, Stupidity, Teasing, First Kiss/Time, Hand Jobs, Frottage, RST, Idiots in Love) – John starts dating a male client of Sherlock's, and Sherlock can't figure out why he's so incensed about it.
Stay Awake by pandoras_chaos (E, 9,325 w., 1 Ch. || BAMF!John, First Time, Angst, Pining Sherlock, Rimming, Oral/Anal) – Sherlock can feel the tenuous threads of this conversation shuddering under the strain of all the unspoken words. His eyes narrow as he gazes up at John, noting the residual tension in his shoulders, the dark circles under his lower lids, and the way he is avoiding Sherlock’s eyes like a bi-polarized magnet. He knows John Watson inside and out, like the perfectly balanced coils and gears of a beautifully balanced grandfather clock, and yet John keeps surprising him. It’s uncanny, the way he keeps on being so utterly and wonderfully unpredictable.
John Watson’s Moon by patternofdefiance (E, 11,314 w., 1 Ch. || Werewolf John, First Time, BAMF John, First Time, Anal, Fleeting Depictions of Violence) – Sherlock finds out John is a werewolf and wants to see the transformation. It, uh, gets really kinky.

Fear Itself by KCS (K+, 12,289 w., 3 Ch. || Suspense, Friendship) – John is accustomed to being kidnapped by now, but he never expected a criminal to adopt Mycroft's method of doing so, to ensure he comes along without a fight.
To be loved by Strange_johnlock (E, 12,436 w., 8 Ch. || Post S3, Established Relationship, First Person POV Sherlock, Pet Names, Soft Sherlock, Mild ADHD, Protective John, Captain Watson, Body Appreciation, Bottomlock, Rough Sex, Travelling for Holidays, Introspection, Sherlock Loves John So Much It Hurts) – John is so deeply integrated into the work, both as my conductor of light, and as a great shot with a vicious right hook who tackles men -and women- no matter their size all in my defense. He protects me with all he can without question, and this loyalty is surely more than I deserve. Or: Sherlock is counting his blessings.
On The Fence by BeautifulFiction (T, 13,770 w., 1 Ch. || Fencing, Case Fic, First Kiss, Insecure John, Pining John, Hug, Greg Finds Out) – The murder of the King's College fencing champion leads to revelations about Sherlock's past. Will it be the point that tips them from friends to lovers, or will they remain on the fence?
The Acronym by DancingGrimm (T, 15,057 w. || Humour) – "'Bee Ay Em Eff'. Hm, that's a new one on me. Do you know what it means, Sherlock?" John might not know what it means, but there are many little ways in which he proves the acronym suits him.

Wounded and ill, Sherlock is convinced he's hallucinating and refuses to share any details about Moran or the fact that Mycroft has been compromised. Hope for Heroes by Richefic (K+, 16,887 w., 5 Ch. || Post-TGG Fic, Introspection / Flashbacks, Friendship/Epic Bromance, Hurt/Comfort, Worried/Anxious Sherlock, Sherlock Admires John, BAMF John, John Deduces, Fancy Party, John’s Self Esteem, Domestics) – In the final moments of "The Great Game" Holmes hopes he will have the chance to tell his flatmate that he was wrong. Heroes do exist after all and the one in front of him is called Dr John Watson.
Traitor's Gate by roane (E, 17,714 w., 6 Ch. || Post-TRF, Case Fic, Mystery, Bets and Wagers, Undercover for a Case, BAMF John, Scientist Sherlock, Teasing, Established Relationship, Military Base, Sexting/Texting, Military/Uniform Kink, Frottage, Dirty Sex, Anal, Bottomlock) – John and Sherlock go undercover at a top secret government lab to find out who is selling research. John is back in uniform and Sherlock is back in a laboratory, but they have to pose as strangers. Sherlock thinks he'll have an easy time of it, but John has his doubts. They get wet, get tied up close and John has to step up and save them. Because he's pretty. And hot. And just a little bit of a BAMF.
Maintaining A Personal Life by Gingerhermit (E, 24,284 w., 6 Ch. || Alternating POV’s, Bisexuality, BAMF!John, Jealous Sherlock, Romance / Drama, Sort-of Case Fic, Peril & Angst, Love Confessions, Toplock, Soft Idiots in Love, Post S3) – Sherlock and John discover some interesting revelations about each other’s sexuality, which lead them both to question the assumptions they've made about one another for years. In the midst of their mutual discoveries, a dangerous psychopath looms on the side-lines who threatens to destroy their new beginning.
Invisible by chappysmom (K+, 25,947 w., 11 Ch. || No Slash, semi-canon compliant) – John had had the knack for as long as he could remember. It wasn’t that he could become invisible, exactly. The laws of physics worked quite well in his vicinity, thank you very much. It was just that people tended … not to see him. {{This was one of the first AU’s I read, and I still love it to this day}}. SEQUELS: Still Invisible (ASiB) || Too Visible (THoB) || Invisible Once More (TRF)
And A Doctor by StillWaters1 (T, 27,393 w., 6 Ch. || Friendship, Doctor John, Whump, Soldier / Doctor Dichotomy, Five and One) – It was only when people actually saw John working as a physician that they began to understand: that it wasn't just about bullets and IEDs and trauma care under fire. That "doctor" actually covered a pretty wide field. And that John was bloody good at covering ground. 5 times Dr. Watson treated others and 1 time he treated himself.
26 Pieces by Lanning (E, 28,236 w., 1 Ch. || H/C, Torture, First Time, Happy Ending, Schmoop, Past Abuse) – Mycroft gives Sherlock the apparently simple task of solving a puzzle box containing a stolen microchip. It isn't simple.
Hellfire by testosterone_tea (E, 28,596 w., 9 Ch. || Fantasy / Magic / Mages / Elementals AU || Mage Sherlock, Elemental John, Developing Relationship, Torture, Powerful / BAMF John, POV Alternating, Dark / Blood Magic, UST, First Kiss) – Sherlock is a Mage that gets involved with a case involving Dark Summoning rituals, leading him to John Watson, a man with Berserker blood. The only thing is, Berserkers have been extinct for centuries. And of course, nothing involving Mycroft and his interfering ways is ever simple. This time, even Sherlock may have bitten off more than he can chew.
To Mend Icarus by AlessNox (T, 29,186 w., 14 Ch. || Post-TRF, Friendship, Drama, BAMF!John, Emotional Turmoil, Introspection, Harry is in this Fic, Angry John, Happy Ending, Queerplatonic Relationship) – After a case lands John Watson in court, he tells Sherlock that he is leaving. It goes about as well as anyone could have anticipated. Which is to say, very, very poorly. Don't worry, things'll be fine in just seven days.

Coventry by standbygo (E, 52,020 w., 26 Ch. || Dollhouse AU || Case Fic, Slow Burn, Sci-Fi / Fantasy, First Kiss / Time, Attempted Rape/Non-Con, BAMF John, Falling in Love) – “Let me get this straight,” John said, wondering when his life had become a science fiction film. “Some guy orders up a personality, a person, to his specifications, and they program this into a real live person, who has consented to do this, and she goes to this person and acts as his wife, or lawyer, or Royal Marine, or Navy Seal or what have you, and she has all the skills, all the knowledge, everything? Then you say the magic words, and she follows you back to The House, and they erase it all until her next appointment?”

Will and his team of scientists are headed out on the first of three manned missions before the first group of settlers arrive. Three days before launch, one of the crew has to be replaced. Will panics because...new people. The replacement is of course one John Watson, biomedical engineer and space hottie who was pretty sure he had retired from actual space exploration and was now content to work in the nice, quiet research lab. Can the crew survive this TOTALLY ROUTINE trip? Will they be able to endure each other for the looooooong trip in close quarters? Gonna be a wild ride... prepare for blast off. John had seemed, if not happy, then reasonably content with his life. Sherlock had never predicted something like THIS might have happened. Not in his worst nightmares. He was the lousiest friend ever, apparently. At least Mycroft found him something to occupy his mind with, so that he didn't have to go back to 221B and stare at the walls and the chair, where John Watson would never sit again.

Maintenance and Repair by patternofdefiance (E, 106,650 w., 71 Ch. || Future AU, Augmentation || Augmented John, Depression, Body Modification, Slow Burn, Worldbuilding, Sci-Fi, Self-Care, Body Dysmorphia) – John wants to explain the rush of sensation and data, which is just another form of sensation (or is it the other way around?). John wants to say: Augmentation circuits report temperature, pressure, various forms of quantitative input. Sudden changes are reported as pain, since sudden changes are dangerous, and pain is the quickest way to encourage reflexive extraction. But all John can manage is, “Nng.” Because this sudden touch is not reporting as pain. Part 2 of STATIC
Shatter the Darkness (Let the Light In) by MojoFlower (E, 109,683 w., 23 Ch. || PODFIC AVAILABLE || Genie/Djinn AU || Magical Realism, Kidnapping, Genie Sherlock, First Kiss / Time, Case Fic, H/C, Angst, Clubs, John Whump, Mild DubCon, Hand / Blow Jobs, Torture) – Fairy tales are for those who remember how to dream; not John Watson, broken and hiding from his bleak future in a beige bedsit. Finally, holidays
Devon can't believe he's there in Europe, in a hotel, in a SPA with his boyfriend
Devon turned to Conrad. His partner's eyes were closed, he seemed to have fallen asleep in the hammock and had been quiet for a while.
It would never have crossed her mind to find herself in such a circumstance, with the first man she had ever fallen in love with, and she hoped the last one too, on a trip halfway around the world at a luxury spa in Amsterdam taking a day off.
It was a doctors' convention, a weekend with colleagues from all over the world, where to exchange advances, opinions and stories.
Conrad had been chosen by the hospital to go, and he could have taken anyone with him. But he had chosen him.
Devon was his companion and partner. During the work sessions he treated him as an equal, he was no longer a student, he was Dr. Pravesh and Conrad kept telling everyone about the operations Devon had taken part in.
Devon smiled, he could almost believe that Conrad was proud of him, no matter how much his partner-boss-lover-boyfriend insisted on trying to prove otherwise.
Conrad was always forcing him more, always forward, always sure that Devon could prove more of himself.
"If you keep looking at me like that you're going to wear my face off." Conrad said without opening his eyes yet.
Devon of turned Colorado and was thankful Conrad wasn't looking at him because he would laugh at him.
"Sorry I was thinking and I got..." "What were you thinking?"
Conrad turned his head back to Devon and sat up.
"I don't know, really, I guess I'm just not used to having time off let alone being in a five star hotel and spending the morning in a spa."
Conrad stood up and reached out to Devon.
"Don't tell me you want to spend the whole morning lying there." "No...I..."
How to tell Conrad that it made him nervous to see him take off his towel and stand naked in front of him. Because of course the spa, it was a nudist place. One of the best spas in the world and it had to be nudist.
"Dec, baby what's up?"
The effort it took not to look directly at Conrad's naked body, perfect, muscular, the same one he'd had so many times in his bed but not in front of other people, left him exhausted and he let out a long sigh.
"Are you okay, it's not the asthma is it?"
Devon shook his head and was grateful that Conrad was bent over so he could look him straight in the eye.
"I'm breathing fine." "So?"
Conrad stroked her cheek and a blush covered her cheek. She giggled like a teenager in front of her idol and Conrad stole a kiss.
"You make me nervous." "I make you nervous. Is it because of this place? Because of being naked?" Devon nodded, he felt really stupid, but he couldn't help it. "Okay, well, I'll put clothes on now. I thought you'd like to see me like this."
Conrad reached out for the small table where he'd left his clothes but Devon tugged and stopped him.
"What did we agree on, do I put clothes on or not?"
Devon shook his head and laughed again.
Why did he have to be so shy? With how easy it would be to take off his towel and swimsuit. Conrad was naked in front of him and that didn't mean anything sexual by any stretch of the imagination, though he loved the sight. Why then did he have to be so shy?
"You know you don't need to get naked right?" "I know but..."
Conrad grabbed his hand and made him stand up, led him over to the hot tub and motioned for him to get in with him.
"But nothing Dev. I don't think you're clear that I like you just the way you are." "That's easy to say when you're a perfect guy like you." "Perfect who? Me? You haven't asked my father have you? I assure you he has a different view of me." "I assure you, you look perfect." "Says the guy who dates me. You're not impartial."
There was silence between them for a moment. That was true, when it came to Conrad, Devon was anything but impartial. He adored him, was the best way to define how Dr. Hawkins made him feel.
"Are you going to spend a lot more time looking at me like that or are you going to come in here with me and I can give you the massage you deserve?" "What massage?" "The one a guy I love dearly and who thinks I'm perfect deserves."
Devon almost jumped in and they didn't get out of there until their fingers got all wrinkly.
Conrad would be more or less perfect and maybe he was better than the image he had of himself, but that moment was indeed perfect and of that they were, both of them convinced.

The 100 Season 7 Episode 4 - Post-Liveblog Recap
Okay, so I liveblogged an episode for the first time - and it turned out to be a nice way to stay focused through the commercial breaks. Might continue to do that for the rest of the season.
But TBH I started doing it just so I could bitch about the CLEAR AND BLATANT LACK OF A SCENE WHERE SANCTUM!KRU REALIZE THAT BELLAMY AND ANOMOLY!KRU ARE MISSING. That was an important scene that the whole fandom, more or less, has been waiting for the entire time for various reasons.
How do the characters react? Who figures out that something’s wrong first? Does Clarke sense Bellamy’s absence because they have a bond? Does Emori go looking for her space sister to comfort her other space sister only to find her missing?
(Actually, she does. That’s my headcanon and I’m sticking to it. Might fic later. Accounts for Emori’s complete absence while her bestie Raven is falling apart.)
Edit: here's the fic!
Anyway, back to the episode - whoever was in charge of editing really really dropped the ball. Missing realization scene, poorly ordered Raven and Clarke scenes. The music during the Dev-and-Hope montage was a nice touch but just too loud enough that I really had trouble telling what they were saying - and the pacing would have felt better with just one show of teenage!Hope before we got 20-year-old her. The cut from Orlando agreeing to train Anomaly!Kru to 5 years later was WAY too abrupt for me to get a feel for the character and relationship development that they were trying to shoehorn in in order to create conflict at the end. I got where they were going with everything, but in a I’m-reading-a-newbie-writer’s-fanfic-because-I-love-the-story-concept-and-want-to-support-them kind of way and not in a I’m-watching-a-show-made-by-experienced-professionals-and-paying-for-the-privilege-in-ad-revenue kind of way. Disappointing.
Jumping around here for a bit: I gotta say I’m loving the makeovers this season! Hair and makeup did a great job on bringing back the old Raven without losing the maturity they gave her, giving Murphy and Emori their Gucci Royalty Vibes without losing the feel of their individual styles, and making Hope look like she can’t find quite the balance between feral forest girl and innocent shut-in who can’t bear to take a life (which is accurate to her character, of course).
And Echo! So I really, really didn’t like her makeovers in seasons 5 and especially 6, because it felt like they were trying too hard to make her look pretty in a 21st Century kind of way. She looked softer, more vulnerable, which really contradicted her character traits - but I thought that might’ve been on purpose, to show a change in her (that she did indeed allow herself to become softer and more vulnerable for her family). And her post-time-skip (not that one. Or that one. The other one. There’s a lot of those. Bah.) look feels like a return to herself; she’s beautiful but in a no-nonsense, don’t-forget-I-can-cut-your-throat kind of way. (Is this because I just really love the butch look on woman and am myself a butch woman? Maybe. But that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.)
Side note: Where the hell did they get clippers on Penance? Those haircuts were entirely too even to have been done with scissors. I’ll buy that Gabriel and Orlando shaved their heads and their perfect round cuts were growout, but Hope and Echo? Electric clippers. Like I said I like the looks, but guys, there’s no way.
I liked that I got a better feel for Hope’s character this episode - she’s trying so hard to be like her mom and Aunty O and all the heroes they told her about when she was a child, but the truth is she’s been in one real battle, she froze, and her best and only friend died. And since her only role models were these incredibly strong people who didn’t give up, back down, hesitate, that wouldn’t be an easy thing for her to get over. (Given that Diyoza was pregnant with her for two entire seasons, I’d really like to have more time developing Hope’s character - or even the same amount of screen time but go easier on the timeskips, lol. She keeps having growth/maturity/life experience spurts so it’s hard to keep up with the development that we’re shown.
So, 5 (7? Wasn’t she 22? There’s still 2 years we missed right?) years after watching her friend die, and 5 (7?) years of blaming herself for freezing, she’s put into the same position, and she stabs some lady in the neck. Kid didn’t steal her coping mechanisms! All joking aside thought, the kid basically relived her trauma in real life - honestly her reaction was 100% valid.
I’m sure I’m supposed to be upset by Echo’s choice to kill the remaining gold-head people. But I think the only reason that’s supposed to bother me is that she promised (ish - she was real explicitly clear that she’d do what was necessary to rescue Bellamy and them were the breaks) Orlando that she wouldn’t. I think I’m supposed to care about the fractured relationship between AnomalyKru and Orlando.
I don’t. I don’t know if it’s the super-fast timeskip (it was weird enough to see the changed dynamics in SpaceKru when I deeply knew all of the characters AND we got time to see the changes play out) or the fact that I didn’t really get to know Orlando in a way that made me super sympathetic to him (I’ll get to that in a minute) or if it’s just that he was smart enough to know he was being played from the start (see Navy SEAL mom didn’t teach you how to swim and Echo again being 100% clear that killing people might still happen) and walked right in anyway. Either way, his betrayal wasn’t enough of a motivator for me as an audience member to be bothered about how things ended between him and AnomalyKru. I kind of shrugged and moved on.
More on Orlando... So The 100 has had several plotlines that center around people doing dangerous, terrible and downright ridiculous things because of their religions; see the kidnapping and conclave of freaking children killing each other to become commander, Gaia’s whole character arc + starting a new religion around Octavia/WonKru betraying that religion to go back to their old one centering on Madi, WHO IS GODDAMN TWELVE, all of Sanctum and season 6, the Sanctum conflict here in season 7, and now this goddamn Bardo Disciple shite.
Now I’m not dishing on real life religion or religious people - I happen to have one of those myself - but the plot of some-people-take-their-religion-way-too-far-drink-the-koolaid-and-hurt-people-around-them has been done and done and done on this show. And now here we have Orlando, who was a high-ranking member of his religion, drank the koolaid, cast out, still a true believer and therefore dangerous because his perspective is fundamentally skewed. I don’t know anything about this religion but that it’s militarized (they can arrest people) and think that sentencing people to 10 years of madness-inducing Geneva Convention violations and then bringing them back to their families two days later is okay. I don’t really want to know anything else, because I’m worried that the show is going to work hard on making this religion scarier than the Sanctum one (needing to one-up themselves with the big bad, of course) which just keeps making the commander religion look humane in comparison.
Which it wasn’t. But I digress.
So Orlando was kinda’ cool, but getting in too deep with a fundamentalist who was complicit in his own abuse by said religion (and so who knows what he thought was okay to do to other people) and then it ended badly.
Cue shocked Pikachu.
Moving on. Clarke. Baby. After the harrowing experience of the radiation destroying the radio so you couldn’t say goodbye to your mom when you were supposed to go to space, then missing your time window and getting left behind on Earth, and the radio broke them too so you couldn’t even be sure your friends would leave in time until they blasted off, and then calling Bellamy every day when you knew he couldn’t hear you, and ALL OF THE FREAKING LAST SEASON WHERE YOU WERE POSSESSED AND WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANYTHING TO LET YOUR FRIENDS AND DAUGHTER KNOW BOTH THAT THAT WASN’T YOU AND THEN LATER THAT YOU WERE ALIVE and THEN your MOTHER getting possessed and you had to check to see if it was really her and it WASN’T. Clarke.
After all that terrifying inability to communicate.
You leave Gaia behind to warn everyone of the danger. INSTEAD OF CALLING THEM ON A PIECE OF HANDY TECHNOLOGY OR TAKING A QUICK TRIP BACK YOURSELF. TO TELL YOUR DAUGHTER WHERE YOU WERE GOING. YOU DON’T THINK THAT MAYBE MAKING EXTRA SURE THAT EVERYTHING GETS COMMUNICATED CLEARLY AND IMMEDIATELY MIGHT BE A PRIORITY.
And then Gaia gets kidnapped. Honestly, cool! Not ‘cause I’m rooting for Gaia to be hurt (I don’t care all that much about her tbh) but I LOVE Indra and I want her to have more screen time and development this season - and or the chance to cut people up with her sword - and kidnapping her daughter seems like a great way to facilitate that.
*Looks at list* Oh, right, Jordan. I forgot you were here. Honestly I can’t figure out what the fuck is going on with you, and since I’ve had a whole season of not connecting with you because the story was too busy focusing on external plot... I don’t see that changing any time soon buddy. Sorry.
Oh and that FrEaKiNg PrOmO!
My garbage boy! My chaos gremlin! My excellent-at-impersonating-a-deity-even-if-it-goes-against-his-programming! What are they doing?!
I’m torn between NO DON’T HURT HIM and YES HURT HIM BECAUSE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND BRAVERY BWAHAHAHA. At least I know there’ll be Murphy and hopefully Memori content in the next episode. That’s the good shit. It’s the only thing left about this show that still feels “pure,” not that I didn’t know what sort of darkness I was signing up for when I started but just because he and Emori are sort of the last light in the darkness, and it’s nice to get a break periodically.

CHAPTER ONE—In Vino Veritas: A Nessian Story
“In wine lies the truth”
Summary: Nesta Archeron is convinced she has everything she wants: a law degree from an ivy, a prestigious job, a gorgeous boyfriend, and excellent taste in wine. However, when she wanders into her local wine vendor and meets a handsome stranger unafraid to play her quick-witted games, she begins to wonder if the life she’s built is really the one she wants.
Cash Kahukore worked his entire adolescent life to become a sommelier, ignoring the slurs his mixed heritage have always earned him as he fought his way to the top. However, after five years abroad buying for Michelin star restaurants and dealing with rich white assholes, he’s grown bored with his life. When a gorgeous lawyer comes in to his uncle’s shop one afternoon, he immediately recognizes a worthy opponent in her. Undaunted by her sharp tongue and possessive boyfriend, he’s determined to be her friend, and—as time goes on and their circumstances change—possibly something more.
This a prequel to Navy Suits and Chelsea Boots that takes place three years before. If you love Elriel (and don’t mind finding out how this story ends) check it now.
Also, check out the masterlist for In Vino Veritas HERE!
Announcements: I know some of you are going to see and and worry “BUT WHAT ABOUT LIKE A LONELY HOUSE??” It’s coming, I swear. I was just really jammed up working on it and this was a way to relieve the brain bleed that LaLH was causing. But seriously, don’t panic, it’s coming. I know I’m not nearly as prolific as some of the more popular writers in this fandom, but I swear it’s because I’m just trying to get it right. Okay, now on with the show!
Chapter One: Cheval
Nesta Archeron had worked hard to get to where she was. She’d helped raise her sisters before putting herself through college and law school, and as a young associate she’d stayed at the office long after her contemporaries gone home. As a reward for her sacrifices—and the success they’d awarded her—Nesta always treated herself to the best of everything. She wore the best clothes, dined at the best restaurants, and—of course—drank the best wine.
That’s why she only ever bought from Merchant of Vino. Sure, it was a stupid name, but she’d done her research, and it was undoubtedly the best wine vendor in the Bay Area. They sold all her favorite Napa reds, and the owner was a man named Devlon who knew his stuff and never tried to look down her blouse.
Nesta was a person who thrived on routine—on ritual—and going to Merchant had become one of her favorites since arriving in San Francisco the previous year.
That was, until the day said ritual was disrupted.
It had started out like normal: she got out of court in the early afternoon and battled traffic to North Beach, already considering what she would order. She hadn’t bought Spring Mountain in a while, and after the day opposing counsel had given her, she was in the mood for something thorny.
The quaint little bell dinged when she stepped inside, and she took a minute to admire the familiar racks before glancing to the bar...
She frowned.
“You’re not Devlon,” she said in greeting, and the man behind the counter—who looked to be in his late twenties— glanced up from the where he’d been shelving bottles and laughed.
“Very astute; I’m not.”
She crossed her arms across her chest. She didn’t like to be teased. She felt a stab of annoyance when he reached up to shelve a final bottle and she caught a glimpse of his ridged stomach and the making of an Adonis belt, visible above the waistband of his low-slung Jeans. She especially didn’t like being teased by attractive men. As an attorney, she got enough of that in her day job.
“I’ve never seen anyone else work here,” she clarified.
She didn’t bother to sound polite, but if her tone bothered the stranger,he didn’t show it.
He only shrugged, gesturing she take a seat in one of the well-loved leather barstools before leaning his forearms on the counter. They were as corded as the rest of him, and covered with what she recognized as Māori tattoos.
“Then I guess it’s your lucky day: I know more about wine than Dev could hope to learn in ten lifetimes.”
When she only responded by pursing her lips, the stranger’s grin widened. Nesta fought not to admire him as leaned a fraction closer.
With long hair tied back in a bun at his crown and heavy gold hoops in his ears, he was nothing like the clean cut and classically-handsome guys she usually went for. Still, she couldn’t deny he was rather devastating.
He was tall and broad, his powerful chest and tapered waist cutting an inherently masculine silhouette which—much to her chagrin—Nesta couldn’t help admiring.
His bronze skin and glossy dark hair spoke to the island heritage his tattoos had already hinted at, and his eyes…
Nesta didn’t want to dwell on how much green they had running through the ribbons of hazel, or how they glittered as they continued to study her.
She sniffed and glanced down to adjust the watch at her wrist, if only to escape the fact she’d been checking him out, hard.
“That’s a rather lofty assessment,” she said finally.
He shrugged.
“It’s true.”
“Jury’s still out,” she shot back.
He gave a throaty laugh, taking the opportunity to look her up and down. However, it wasn’t in the leering way she’d grown accustomed to, as if she were a cut of expensive meat. He seemed to be taking her measure instead. From the way he smiled—teeth diamond bright against his full lips—it was clear he’d been satisfied by what he’d found.
“Challenge accepted. I’m more than happy to blow your mind, free of charge.”
She snorted, ignoring the potential double meaning. This felt dangerously like flirting, and if there was one thing Nesta Archeron never did, it was flirt.
“You really think I’m that easy?”
His grin widened, and she rolled her eyes. Okay, fine, she’d walked into that one. Still, she wasn’t one to back down from a challenge, and everything about this guy seemed to suggest he’d be a worthy opponent.
“Okay, maestro,” she said, setting her bag down and finally taking a seat. “If you’re so smart, pour me a glass of something you think I’ll like.”
He considered, biting his annoyingly-plush lower lip as he surveyed her again. It was more openly appreciative this time, but still never strayed below her chin.
“What do I get if I guess correctly?”
She gave him a deadpan look, the kind her male colleagues had suggested could melt flesh from bone.
“A tip.”
He bubbled his lips in dismissal.
“Woman, I don’t work here for the tips. I’d rather have your name.”
She considered, hating how much she was enjoying this. It had been ages since she’d had a decent sparring partner.
“Fine,” she said. “But know that if you’re wrong, I’m not giving you either.”
He only laughed before grabbing three glasses from where they hung on the rack and lining them up on the bar top between them.
“I’ll take my chances.“
He glanced back at her, drumming his fingers against his lips as he considered. He then pulled out three bottles, a white and two reds. When he’d poured a taste in the first two glasses and two fingers-worth in the third, she frowned.
“This is cheating.”
He only laughed again, eyes alight beneath his devilishly arched brows. They made him look dangerous in a way Nesta refused to admit suited him.
“Trust the process,” he said, gesturing to the glass of white.
“Now, this is what you think I think you like: Rombauer Chardonnay out of the Napa valley. Aged in French oak with notes of vanilla and an earthy, buttery finish. Too rich to make a good sipping wine, but still an inexplicable go-to choice for mansplainers trying to impress their female friends.”
He paused to give her a roguish smile, which she rewarded with a shrug. He was right; she hated buttery chardonnays, but it was still what men always assumed she’d want.
He swished the the Rombauer before swallowing the small measure in the glass and moving to the next, a plum-colored red.
“This is what you think you want: Nickel and Nickel Cabernet. It’s complex and beguiling and just the kind of fleshy, bold California red a power broker like yourself is conditioned to love.”
She ignored the jab and picked up the glass, bringing it to her nose. She was greeted with the smell of dark berries and cassis, and it made her mouth water.
“You should have quit while you were ahead,” she said, throwing back the small measure and letting the taste envelop her palate. “Far Niente is one of my favorite vineyards.”
He just smirked, gesturing to third glass.
“Not so fast, because this is what you actually want. Chateau Cheval Blance from the St-Émilion appellation in France. A light structure, perfect in its tension between floral and mineral notes. Truly, this is terroir at its finest.”
She gave him a tight smile.
“I’m not a Old World wine person,” she said, pushing the empty Cabernet glass towards him in silent request he refill it. “Better luck next time on the tip.”
He responded by pushing the French blend towards her instead.
“Humor me.”
She pursed her lips before picking up the glass. She could smell dark cherries and wood smoke, and something floral that she couldn’t place but that was all the more tantalizing for its elusiveness.
Begrudgingly she took a sip, and it was an effort not to let her eyes roll back in her head. It was silky, but not in the cloying way that Chardonnays sometimes were, and the flavor seemed to blossom, sweet plum giving way to dark berries and something earthy that had her toes curling in her expensive Louboutin heels. Truly, she wasn’t sure she’d ever tasted anything so divine.
He studied her reaction before flashing a wicked smile and leaning in.
“So what’s your name, Gorgeous?”
Struggling to compose herself, she hastily set down the glass.
“I have a boyfriend,” she snapped.
The man seemed undaunted by her declaration though, and if he noticed her sudden unease, he didn’t comment. Instead, he re-filled her glass before pouring one for himself.
“I have no doubt,” he said, touching his glass to hers so the crystal sang. “But that isn’t what I asked.”
She watched him as he took a sip, his throat working as he swallowed. Good Lord, he was handsome.
She mentally slapped herself. She had a boyfriend, and perfect taste in wine aside, she shouldn’t be indulging this stranger in whatever game he thought he was playing. Tomás would be furious if he found out.
This in mind, she settled for scowling.
The stranger laughed.
“It’s not like it matters,” he said, twirling the stem of his glass between long fingers. “Unless you’re a drug dealer who plans to pay cash for the case of Cheval of you are so obviously going to be buying, I’m going to see it on your card anyway. Besides, no one likes an oath breaker.”
She took another sip of wine to hide her smile. They weren’t flirting, she assured herself. They were just...talking. Talking was perfectly innocent. Tomas couldn’t get angry at her for talking.
The man waited, and eventually she relented.
“Nesta.”
“Nesta...?” He prompted, and she rolled her eyes.
“Nesta Archeron.”
He extended a hand.
“Cash.”
“Please tell me that’s a nickname.”
He only laughed in response.
“Are you always this charming, Nesta Archeron?”
His hand remained between them, and after a beat of hesitation she took it. A jolt of electricity shot up her arm the minute they touched, and she found herself fending off a flush as she tugged her hand back. Still, they remained close. Closer than she knew she should allow, even as she failed to pull back to a safer distance.
He watched with keen interest as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear before meeting her gaze again and saying, “yes.”
“Yes what?”
“Yes, it’s a nickname. Cash is short for Cassian, though I don’t think anyone’s actually called me that since my mom died.”
A pang hit her, a familiar ache that still wrenched at her ten years later.
Without fully understanding why she was doing it, she blurted, “my parents are dead, too.”
He frowned for the first time since they’d met.
“I’m sorry.”
“It was a long time ago.”
It was an automatic response, the one she always gave to avoid people asking more questions. It didn’t feel like a long time ago, though. At least, the pain hadn’t dulled the way it should have. Some night she still caught herself wishing her mother were there to tuck her into bed.
“I’m still sorry,” Cash said, brushing her ring finger with the tips of his.
It was a feather-light touch—a gesture of comfort and solidarity—but it still had Nesta’s stomach knotting. She pulled her hand away and he didn’t fight her on it, glancing up to give her a soft look instead.
“I know how hard it is, being on your own.”
Nesta bristled.
“I’m not alone. I’ve got two younger sisters, and my—“
“—boyfriend,” he said, leaning back even as he smirked. “Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten.”
She couldn’t help it; this time, she flushed. However the look gave her said he had no intention of pushing the issue.
She imagined what Elain would say were she there, and she grit her teeth before forcing out, “I didn’t mean to imply that you—“
“Don’t apologize,” he said, eyes glittering as they skated over her face again. “Beautiful girl like you, it...wasn’t a bad assumption. Still, you have nothing to worry about from me, I promise.”
She nodded, surprised to find a twinge or disappointment. She attempted to bury the feeling by shouldering on.
“So where is Devlon?”
Cash shrugged, folding his toned arms across his chest in a gesture his white T-shirt struggled to accommodate.
“He had to go back home to handle some stuff and I’d just gotten back to town, so I told him I’d watch the shop for awhile.”
“How long will he be gone?”
Cash grinned, taking another sip of wine.
“Sick of me already, Archeron?”
She only pursed her lips in response, and he laughed.
“I didn’t ask. But long enough that you’ll get to see me again, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
His grin was a slash of white across his tan face, and she looked away to avoid blushing again. This was definitely too close to flirting for Nesta’s comfort. One more glass and she might—
“I should go,” she said abruptly, draining the last of her wine. “It was nice meeting you, Cassian.”
She picked up her bag and was halfway to freedom when he laughed.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
She turned back, and he gestured to the racks of wine all around them. When they made eye contact, his grin grew wicked.
“Or did Dev already tell you his gorgeous nephew was taking over the shop, and you just came to check out the goods yourself?”
She grit her teeth, trying not to admire said...goods, especially the ones she could make out through his thin t-shirt and fitted jeans.
“You’re an ass,” she growled, stalking back towards him.
“C’mon, you love it.”
“Don’t make me gut you will my shoe. It’s impossible to get blood out of suede.”
He only laughed.
“Why do I get the sense you’d actually do it, too?”
“Because I don’t make idle threats,” she snapped.
“I’ll believe that,” he said, eyes alight. “Alright, enough teasing, then. What are you looking for? Besides the Cheval, obviously,” he added, winking.
She debated ordering three cases of Nickel and Nickel just to wipe the smirk off his face. However, she quickly decided it was an exercise in futility; he’d know why she was doing it, and the Cheval really was too divine to pass up.
“Yes, you insufferable bastard, I will have a case of the Cheval.” When he grinned in reply, she added, “And a bottle of Ferreira Garrafeira.”
He gave a low whistle.
“That’s expensive stuff. And I thought you said you didn’t like Old World wine?”
“It’s not for me; it’s for Tomás.”
She could decide if she felt pleased or guilty when his smile slipped a fraction before recovering, too bright to be wholly genuine.
“Ah. the famed boyfriend, I presume. He’s certainly got...interesting taste.”
When she bristled, he went on hurriedly.
“In wine! Obviously his taste in women is...” he trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck with a sheepish laugh.
“Yes?” She said archly, not wanting to admit how much the comment had stung.
With sisters like Elain and Feyre, Nesta was used to being dismissed as the frigid, uptight sister. It didn’t make it any easier to swallow.
However, Cash wasn’t looking at her in that way men often did, as if she were some poisonous insect he was afraid might sting him. His expression softened.
“Impeccable,” he finished, and it was so unexpected she flushed.
He cleared his throat before going to the computer behind the bar to consult the shop’s inventory.
“We don’t have the Garrafeira in right now, but I can order it for you. The Cheval is in the back.”
“Don’t worry about the port,” she said, regretting the outburst now. “He’ll—live.”
Cash turned, brows furrowed.
“Are you sure? I can—“
“It’s fine,” Nesta repeated. “Thank you.”
Cash nodded and disappeared into the back before reappearing with a wooden crate a minute later. The strain of holding it was doing glorious things for his arms, and she cleared her throat.
“Thank you,” she said, making a great show digging in her bag for her wallet to avoid looking at him again.
“Where are you parked? I don’t want you snapping your neck walking on those pencils you’re calling shoes.”
She pursed her lips.
“You’re hilarious. How much do I owe you?”
However, he was halfway to the door already.
“I have a friend who distributes for Cheval. This one’s on me.”
“No!” She called, following after him. “Cassian, come back! I don’t need your charity!”
Cash turned to smirk at her over his shoulder.
“With that handbag? I’d say not. Besides, this isn’t charity. It’s...an investment.”
She scowled at this, and he gave an exasperated laugh.
“Don’t get thorny on me, Archeron. I just meant—“ he broke off, laughing again. “Think of it as a perk for being a regular. Buy ten cases, get one free.”
“This isn’t Jamba Juice,” she said, deadpan. “And I don’t like owing people.”
“Look,” he said. “I wasn’t lying about my friend being a distributor. It’s not going to cost the shop anything. Now, where is your car? I think my arms are going numb.”
She bit her lip, debating what this might end up costing her. She didn’t believe in “free”, and she didn’t like feeling like she owed someone; she’d had enough of that from people when she’d been taking care of her sisters after their parents died.
Then again, she’d made it clear that she wasn’t interested in him...like that, and she’d certainly bought her fair share of wine here over the last few years...
“Fine,” she said, gesturing to her Land Rover. “But take this, at least.”
She pulled out a fifty from her wallet, and Cash rolled his eyes.
“I’m not the pizza delivery boy; I don’t want a tip. Just, promise not to call me Cassian again. That’s all the payment I require.”
She didn’t move, the bill still outstretched. He heaved the crate into her open trunk before shutting it.
“I swear to god, woman, put that away before I shred it to ticker tape. I don’t need your charity, either.”
She relented with a huff, and he laughed.
“Thank you,” he said.
“I should be the one thanking you,” she admitted, and he smiled, leaning against her car.
“No one is stopping you.”
She grit her teeth, irritated and flustered in equal measure.
“Thank you,” she finally managed. “For the wine.”
“‘And for blowing my mind’,” he prompted, and she flipped him a foul hand gesture, civility forgotten.
“If you think that’s all it takes to blow my mind, you have a lot to learn about women.”
He bit his lip, eyes full of amusement as he peeled himself off the car.
“I’ll take that under advisement,” he said, flashing her a quick wink. “Until next time, then, Nesta Archeron.”
She opened her mouth to retort, but for once words failed her. She instead stood, gaping like a landlocked fish as he sauntered around her and back into the shop.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cash was distracted for hours after Nesta Archeron left. Even as he met with reps and worked on organizing his uncle Devlon’s pathetically arcane inventory system, he found his eyes kept wandering to the door, as if she might come sauntering back in. Damnit, why hadn’t he told her the Cheval was out of stock? Then at least he would have had a guarantee of seeing her again. Depending on her drinking habits, it could be months before she came in again. Fuck, he was so stupid.
Not that it mattered, really. How many times had she managed to force her boyfriend into the equation? Twice? Three times? Definitely enough that he knew he should get the message. And he understood; he really did. Like all guys his age, he’d been raised on a steady diet of “if she’s not interested, try harder”. It hadn’t been until he’d gotten into his twenties that he’d realized how fucked up that was. When women said no, men needed to respect that and not keep pushing.
The problem was that despite all the clumsy mentions of her boyfriend, she’d still stayed when she easily could have left. Besides, if she thought he hadn’t seen her checking him out, she was insane. Not that he blamed her, obviously. If he was a woman, he’d want to fuck him, too.
Before he could catch himself, his lizard brain was imagining what being in bed with her would be like. His pulse thrummed. It wasn’t so much the idea of sleeping with her as it was imagining what a courtship like that would be like. She was definitely hot, but her body had nothing on that gorgeous brain. It was clear she was a woman of supreme intellect; he’d have to seduce her mind if he ever wanted to earn something physical.
It was the kind of intellectual challenge he craved, and one he hadn’t had in ages before she’d come in. He wanted someone who could dish it back, and Nesta Archeron clearly knew how to give as good as she got.
His phone rang, and he glanced at the caller id before huffing and picking it up.
“If you’re calling to ask if the shop has burned down yet, the answer is no.”
His uncle Devlon laughed.
“That place is the closest thing I’ll ever have to a wife; I just want to make sure you’re treating her right.”
“I’ll show her a good time while you’re away,” Cash promised, pouring himself a glass of a new Rioja the rep had dropped off that afternoon.
“Don’t make sex jokes about my baby,” Dev said. “And stop drinking my merchandise!”
“I’m not!” Cash said, setting down his glass. “Relax, old man. And is Merchant your wife or your baby? You should probably decide; you’ll freak people out if you keep using them interchangeably.”
“Very funny, wise ass. How’s it being back?”
“This place hasn’t changed a bit in ten years,” Cash said, looking around appreciatively. “But you need to get a decent table in here so you can host tasting. Why didn’t you call my friend Az like I told you to? He does gorgeous work.”
“You must think I’m a lot richer than I am,” Dev said. “I’ve seen his designs; you think I can afford a ten thousand dollar table?”
Cash rolled his eyes.
“He said he’d do it at cost. Why are you being so stubborn?”
“I’m not going to prey on your fancy friends. Tell him thank you but I can’t swing it.”
“Fine.”
Dev sighed.
“Why do I feel like you’re just going to do it anyway?”
“Because I’m as stubborn as you. How’s Koro?”
“Not a spry as she used to be, but she’s managing just fine. She wants to know when her favorite grandson is coming back. She says the Ritz on Maui is looking for a sommelier.”
“Tell her my days of working for rich white assholes is behind me,” Cash said.
Dev considered.
“You could open your winery here, you know. Volcanic wine is popular with the haoles.”
“Didn’t I just say I was done with rich white assholes?”
“Fine, fine.”
There was a pause in which Cash weighed his options before he added in what he hoped was a casual tone, “If I said the name Nesta Archeron, would that mean anything to you?”
“The lawyer? Sure. She comes in about twice a month. Nice girl, once you get past her prickly side. Why?”
Cash swirled his wine.
“Just wondering. She came in today.”
Dev gave a gravelly laugh.
“You’re barking up the wrong tree. She’s got a boyfriend.”
“So I’ve been warned. Have you met him?”
“She’s brought him in once or twice. Portuguese dude.”
“Nice?”
“Not particularly. He’s very possessive of her. Really rubbed me the wrong way.”
Cash felt a prickle of irritation himself. What was a brilliant, fiery woman like Nesta Archeron doing with a controlling prick for a boyfriend? She should be with someone who respected that sharp tongue, someone who could—
“Don’t even think about it, Cash. She’s one of my favorite customers. I don’t want you to scare her off with your panting.”
“I don’t ‘pant’. Also, can you blame me? Man, those legs, and her eyes—“
“I mean it,” Dev interrupted, voice firmer this time. “If she brought up her boyfriend, it means she wants you to fuck off.”
“I’m not going to bother her. I was just....curious.”
“Well don’t be. That creepy boyfriend will nail your balls to the wall if he finds out you’re trying to move in on her.”
“I respect her choices, but I don’t give a shit about him. He can suck my co—“
“I think you’d better accept that no one in that relationship wants your tiny pecker.”
“Tell that to the way she was looking at me today.”
“Just because you’ve got a cute ass doesn’t mean she likes you.”
Cash groaned.
“Fine, forget I said anything.”
Dev chuckled.
“Don’t be sulky. I’m sure there’s plenty of women in the Bay Area that would be happy to take her place.”
He was right, but somehow it didn’t make Cash feel any better. There was no shortage of beautiful women in San Francisco, but none of them interested him quite the way she had. There’d been no denying the wrenching disappointment when he’d realized she wasn’t single. Then again, had he really expected someone like her to be? And she was lawyer to boot. He gave a huff of amused appreciation. He should have known.
“Right,” Dev said, interrupting his reverie. “Well I just wanted to check in, sounds like everything is fine there. I will tell Koro you said hi. Remember, I’m charging you for any of my wine you drink.”
Cash snorted.
“You’re getting a level three somm for free. I’ll drink all the wine I want.”
“Fair enough. Take care of yourself, pōtiki. And no more hitting on my customers!”
“I wasn’t—“ Cash began, but the line clicked off, and he swore, even has he caught himself laughing a little.
He’d been second-guessing the decision to come back from London since he’d arrived two weeks ago. Today, for the first time, he felt he was exactly where he was meant to be.
He’d thought he might owe Nesta Archeron another case of wine for that, boyfriend or no. He just hoped she wouldn’t make him wait too long for the opportunity.

I read your post about lotura. I have a faint feeling you believe Lotor is *actually* a two-faced, manipulative and murderous guy. Like, if I had not know it’s you who wrote that post, I’d assume it was made by some... anti. Or, at least, by those people who call themselves “allura stan” and “pro-voltron”. However I may have misunderstood the post. Have a nice day.
Hi anon, thanks for the note!
Um, I guess I’m pro-Voltron if you think calling Voltron a hypocrite with moral failings is being a stan?? Not including my various previous posts here and here about the damaging messages associated with team Voltron as a result of VLD, my post said:
As I talk about in my post, I believe the show itself made Lotor an unnecessary scapegoat, and the paladins unnecessary hypocrites, for the sake of “uwu big robot fights,” which is why it’s very easy for me to just straight up reject canon as ridiculous writing at a certain point and do my own thing.
I ultimately don’t think Lotor wants to be any of the things s6-s7 canon accuses him of. In my post, I detail how he made objective strides to confirm himself a true ally of Voltron from s4-s6, to save the paladins from Zarkon at risk to himself, even willingly being physically vulnerable with Allura at the time of his accusation. These are details that support external EP confirmations that Lotor was genuine in his desire for real peace and in his love for Allura, regardless of why ever he was hiding the colony from the paladins.
A true, murderous psychopath would never put himself in harm’s way for the sake of others and would never intentionally put himself in a situation where he’s not the one in control.
As I talk about in my meta, the dev team admits to jerking around characters for the sake of robot battles and for funzies to trick the audience. Lotor sacrificing non-military combatants, and Alteans especially, makes zero objective sense to the overall VLD world-building. There was zero reason for him to need Alteans at all to break into the quintessence field, when there were several other canon-confirmed ways to get pure quintessence/open a rift. Other details of the colony plot and about Lotor himself are so contradictory (example: Lotor is immune to quintessence, but oops, suddenly he’s not so the show can really force him to go crazy?), it’s wild.
And sure, VLD does get a really well-animated robot battle out of s6, but at what cost.
From a purely internal canon perspective, there’s some implications in the way that Lotor gets energy from Altean civilians (at least, based on the information we got in the show, not including fanon interpretations) that I’m personally uncomfortable with.
But if I have to play by canon rules, then I think he knew there was something not right about all that colony business, whatever it was, and that he desperately wanted to get to the quintessence field to actively fix not just the universal energy crisis fueling his empire’s slave labor, but also to restore those Alteans who were sacrificed to get to the quintessence field in the first place. Allura in s8 even confirms that what she learned from Lotor had to do with “life-saving energy.”
It’s wild to me as well that for all the hullabaloo canon makes over the colony and the sanctity of life, Allura ultimately comes to reject her previous belief that Lotor was a liar and deceiver. She exonerates Lotor of his accused crimes in s8--like she suddenly realizes after all the death and sacrifice in s7-s8 that oops, Lotor really was genuine and had simply been unable to make the best choice, and that whatever the colony meant, he really did deserve happiness. And then she sacrifices Alteans (herself and Honerva) to save the universe? And the paladins are totally accepting of this strategy suddenly?
So at the end of the day, why even play by canon rules? VLD took a serious nosedive for the sake of just generating pointless battles, lol. Lotor and Allura deserved a better story line than this. Voltron was better than this. The franchise was better than this. And for me personally, Lotura fandom has a lot to offer in terms of developing a better, more moral Voltron and a more positive, uplifting story for Lotor as well. I like those things.
Heck, if there’s other ships in the Voltron sea (or even gen fics, le gasp) where people can explore those concepts, I’m all for it. Let’s fix this thing, y’all. There’s a million and one ways to do it. But I’ve really enjoyed the Lotura environment personally for what the ship has the potential to do and be.
Feel free to reach out in private messages if you wanna chat more. Peace and love!
