Sam hadn't been in Ivy Cove long but he was slowly starting to get used to the idea of being here for a while. He was sitting at a cafe, coffee in hand as he scrolled through a page he was reading on his laptop. The moment he heard his name, however, he dropped the coffee all over his lap. "Shit. Oh, Gabriel. Shit. Hi. Sorry, come on, sit down. My bad, I was just really into this article I was reading."

"No, your fine. You can stay." Sam assured the other, because really, he probably wasn't any better company. After being sent to another place, thinking that he was stuck in Ivy Cove was a bit unsettling for him. He was really hoping that he would have at least went home for a moment, check in on everyone but it didn't seem to happen. He was stuck in Ivy Cove once more.
"Are you alright? You don't have to answer but I felt like I had to ask." Sam admitted.

Astrid wished she could go back to being blissfully unaware. She wished she could forget again and not remember where her scars came from. Not remember why so many figures haunted her waking days and sleepless night.. Why no matter how hard she willed them, tears wouldn't come. She wasn't Astrid Becke, she was a Volstrucker. A weapon to be used to protect the safety of everyone but herself. She had no room for emotions and she felt them burying themselves as she walked. With each new memory she felt herself lose a part of the woman she always wanted to be. Her life in Ivy Cove seemed to be just a cruel prank and it left her heart feeling hollow. She simply kept walking. Losing herself in the woods, it felt like the only way to feel safe. That she wouldn't hurt anyone here, not anyone she loved or cared for. She only stopped walking when her body was practically screaming at her for rest. Propering herself up on a fallen tree.. She drank from her flask, eyes starring up toward the sky. A sadness clinging to her frame. "I'm afraid I won't make the best company, so if you too are looking for a spot of rest. I can just head on." Her voice was monotoned barely hiding the paint beneath.

Note
Like 90% of the show revolved around Sam/Dean or from their POV. 10% were B-C plots for Cass, Crowley, whoever, so J2 could get time off. But just because 10% of the show had focus on other characters, doesn’t mean it was an ensemble. And not to mention the whole “found family” thing, like if Sam and Dean referred to someone as “family”, it was 9x out of 10 a death sentence. It was like another version of “sleep w/ Sam and die”. Family don’t end in blood, but it ends bloody when you’re in it w/ the Winchesters.
If you watch and pay attention to the entire show as a whole, yes, it's painfully obvious.
The problem is, as is so often the case? Certain fans only pay attention to what they personally are invested in. Sure, in this particular case, that's just (their imaginative personal reinterpretations of) a fraction of the show? With a show spanning 15 years, though, even a fraction is a lot of content. Easily enough that someone who wants to deceive themselves they're properly remembering 'the whole show' can.
So it doesn't matter that Misha was in a fraction of the airtime of a fraction of the episodes compared to J2. They only cared about the episodes he was in or they could pretend were about him, so he was a lead equal to J2! It doesn't matter that the Wayward herd and Eileen were in even fewer episodes and played only minor roles (if any) in the major arcs. They wanted them to be very very important, and the characters talked about family being more than blood a couple times across the whole span of the show, so found family was the major theme! It definitely doesn't matter Sam & Dean talked about their relationship as something special above and beyond just family more times than that, because they were tuning out/actively wanted to forget those scenes. And so on.
With a source material as extensive as the show Supernatural, there's always some extent to which fans' biases are going to distort their memory of the canon. But certain people really do take it to the next level. Which doesn't even account for the ones who know they're full of shit but believe they can change (at least the perception of) reality through never-ending spam campaigns.

"It sure looks like it." Sam hummed, looking up at the sky. It was a dark color, a bit ominous but he didn't mind it. Personally, he was a fan of the rain. It made things seem relaxing, even if a storm wasn't relaxing to most folks. "Looks like it might be a bit more than just some rain though. Those clouds might have some hail in them as well, at least, they might. I'm not a weatherman." He chuckled.
❧ open to all ❧ near the beach
Thunder to be heard in the distance as clouds closed in. It was a beautiful display for those that could appreciate the wonderment of a storm, the harshness of a tidal wave or even just the gust of a strong wind. Fall had come and gone, and with it the increase in the grey that seemed to cloud the entirety of the world around. Every now and then Bonanus felt as though there was something beyond those clouds, like she had a connection somewhere far away. For a split second, before she'd push those thoughts away. Distraction was easy to come by.
Tumblr media
In the corner of her eye she noted movement, causing her turn to with face full of wonderment. "Do you think we'll get some rain later?" Always the rain enthusiast.

The Executioner's Song: Part One
Pairing: Dean Winchester x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~1.6k
Warnings: canon angst and violence, extra angst
Summary: As the newly formed Scarlet Witch, you're not letting anyone get in your way to true power, not even Dean. The power you feel is like no other, and not even Cain is a match for you. Sure is cute to watch him try, though.
Season Ten Masterlist
Author’s Note: I do not own anything from Supernatural. All credit goes to their respective owners. I love seeing any and all comments <3

x
You sit at your small table in the back of the bar sipping on your fourth drink of the morning. The best thing about your condition is you can drink as much as you want whenever you want. You get a slight buzz but nothing like being blackout drunk. The only people left in the bar are the ones who fell asleep in it last night and the day drinkers. There are a few stragglers coming in for a quick bite but it's mostly bar drunks and bad attitude.
There is a couple on the far side of the bar that seems to be in a bit of an argument. The woman came storming in to find her husband or boyfriend or whoever was still at the bar drinking. You can't hear what they're saying but you can't imagine it's good. So glad you're not in her shoes anymore.
A much younger girl is near their table after just coming out of the bathroom. His eyes wander in her direction and you smirk knowingly. He doesn't check the girl out because he knows it'll piss his woman off. So you make him. His eyes shine bright red for a second as you take over his mind from across the bar.
He completely turns and checks the woman out, causing an outcry from his significant other. She hits him in the shoulder and he punches her in the face. Patrons from all around come to her rescue but you're not letting them leave here without a black eye or two. As soon as the first punch is given, a fight breaks out. It doesn't matter if someone has beef with another person or not, they're fighting.
You smirk and continue to sip your drink, soaking in all the chaos you're creating. Having magic again is the best thing to ever happen to you--the kind of magic that is limitless. Chaos magic. And you don't even have to lift a finger to use it. You thrive off chaos; it's what the Mark craves. You're just doing your job and feeding it with negative energy.
You close your eyes and bask in the feeling of pure power. There is nothing that can spoil your good mood.
"Y/N!"
Okay, maybe one thing can. You open your eyes and see Dean harshly pulling you out of your trance. Every patron stops fighting and looks around in confusion.
"Way to ruin a good time," you roll your eyes.
"When you left the Bunker, this isn't what I thought you'd be doing."
"What did you think I'd do? Stay behind with you two losers? I got my magic back, and the last thing I want is to spend it on the likes of you."
"Magic or not, soul or not, you can't go around hurting people like this."
"Or else what?" you challenge.
"Or else Sam and I will hunt you down and kill you just like we do with any monster."
You nod like you're in agreement but you feel quite the opposite of that. You down the rest of your drink and grab the steak knife that's lying on your small napkin. You twirl it once before slamming it down on the back of Dean's hand. He gasps in pain but tries to hide it from everyone else. You grab his collar and pull him close to you.
"That's strike one. I'm going to do whatever I want wherever I want with whoever I want. If you want to try and stop me, then I'm going to remind you just how little you are compared to me. Do not get in my way or I can promise you, you won't like what happens if you do."
You leave cash on the table for your drinks and step away from the table. Dean yanks the knife out of his hand, thankful you didn't hit his bones.
"What about my hand?"
You turn and start walking backward toward the door.
"Get your angel to fix it. I'm sure he's around here somewhere."
The Mark is burning but it's not because of what you did to those people inside the bar or Dean. The one who created you is calling for you. Cain is somewhere around here give or take a few hundred miles and he wants you to find him. The funny thing is, you want to find him so you can kill him. There is so much more you can do with your magic that you couldn't do before, and he's the perfect person to try your new tricks on.
Your magic is pulling you all the way to Texas where Cain was last seen. He took out one of the inmates, Tommy Tolliver, at the state prison, and the guards thought it was weird since all the doors and windows were locked. If you can track where this prison inmate went, you'll find Cain. The guards weren't too happy to see a stranger demanding to be let in but with a simple mind trick, you walked through the front doors with no problem.
You find the warden crouching down in Tommy's cell looking at a drop of blood Cain left behind for you to find.
"Warden Skiff?"
"Who are you?" he asks.
"The woman you're going to comply with. Tell me everything you know about what happened here," you say and flash your eyes red.
"Yeah. Welcome to death row. Have a look. The night Tolliver disappeared, our little ship was running as tight as ever, and I got documentation to prove it."
"Do you stand by what the press is saying about a locked cell, no security breach, and no guard misconduct?"
"Which press? Mainstream media is calling for my head, saying I was grossly incompetent. The tabloids are saying it's magic, that Tommy pulled off some dark miracle to escape."
"Are you saying you believe that?" you ask.
"I'm saying there was some kind of magician on the block last night but it wasn't Tommy."
"Great," someone mutters behind you.
You turn to see Sam and Dean in their Fed suits while you're wearing a dark red shirt, black skinny jeans, a dark leather jacket, and black fingerless gloves. You look nothing like a federal agent, so they're wondering how the hell you got in here in the first place. You look down and see Dean's hand is all healed.
"You two are?" the warden asks.
"Agents Hetfield and Ulrich. We spoke on the phone. I see you've met our other agent."
"He was being very helpful," you smirk.
"Yes, as I was telling her, it may seem like there had been a magician here but it's not the one you might think. Follow me."
The warden walks off first but Dean grabs your elbow to keep you behind so they can scold you.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"The same as you."
"You're here to look into the mysterious disappearance of an inmate?"
"Sure. We'll go with that."
You yank your arm out of Dean's grasp and follow the warden into the surveillance room where the cameras are located. He plays the footage of what happened right before Tommy vanished from his cell.
"This is right before Tolliver vanished."
The camera goes dark before turning back on. Tommy is gone when they turn back on. The Mark is tingling with anticipation because you know exactly who caused this. There is something moving in the darkness, and it's not the Easter Bunny.
"Is that one of the guards?" Sam asks.
"Nope, and I don't know who he is, how he got in, or how he and Tolliver got out."
"Can you zoom in on that?"
Dean can feel it, too. He knows exactly who that is.
"Can and have. It's too dark to make out much of anything."
"Do it." The warden does. "Freeze it and blow it up." He does and Dean stiffens in recognition. "Thank you for your time. We'll be in touch if we need anything else."
They traveled in the Impala while you walked, so you hitched a ride to the nearest pull-off area that just so happened to have a food truck by it. Dean is getting some food and calling someone while Sam looks into why Cain wanted to take Tommy in the first place.
"Damn it, Cas is still not answering," Dean sighs and sits across from Sam with a tray of food.
"Great. I have been looking into Tommy Tolliver, seeing if I can figure out why Cain went to the trouble of springing him. I'm still pretty unclear about it all. I did find this blotter out of Orlando about his dad, Leon Tolliver. Like father, like son. He's a convicted felon, fresh warrant for an assault charge, but he's gone missing and hasn't been seen in a week."
"You think the two are connected?"
"I mean, the police just assumed he fled the warrant, but if Cain took Tommy, it might not be a coincidence."
"What, Cain's got a vendetta against the entire family?"
"Maybe."
Dean's phone rings and he sighs in relief at who is calling.
"It's Cas." He puts him on speakerphone. "Hey, where are you at?"
"Illinois."
"Well, we got a lead. Cain abducted a Texas death row inmate named Tommy Tolliver."
"He's dead."
"How do you know?"
"Call it an educated guess. Cain has been very busy."
"Okay, where are you? We'll come to you," Dean says.
"I'll call you back."
"Well, I don't know about you, but I'm jumping on this ride with you," you say.
"Help me understand something," Dean says. "You flee the Bunker to go to a bar and torment other people only to hitch rides to Texas for an inmate you have no interest in saving?"
"I never cared about Tommy, Dean. I'm surprised you couldn't feel it. Cain is calling us. I'm just following the trail. So, when are we going to leave?"
"Why are you coming with us? You made it perfectly clear you want nothing to do with us."
"I think it's time to meet Daddy again, don't you?"
Both brothers groan in disgust.
"Don't call him that."
"Why? He's hot," you shrug. "We should get going. Illinois is a long drive."
"Cas said he'll call back."
"You trust him to get shit done? What are you able to do in the Bunker that you can't do out here?"
"She has a point," Sam says.
"I know," Dean rolls his eyes in annoyance.

All-time Sam/Dean recs
Plotty:
Intertextuality by doctor__idiot
Summary: It starts out as a joke. Sam has no other excuse than boredom. And maybe a little pettiness.
Envy’s notes: Sam gets annoyed when Dean keeps trying to flirt with girls they come across. The solution? Flirt with Dean himself.
Another Go Round by KassandraScarlett
Summary: Someone sends Dean back to 2009, with a mission: change the past, change the present, so the apocalypse never happens.
Dean leaves behind a Croatoan-ridden world, only to stumble into the one person he's always loved more than anything else.
Or:
Zachariah doesn't send Dean to 2014. Instead, Chuck sends the Dean of the future to 2009.
Envy’s notes: Sam Winchester/apocalyptic Dean is the best ship we have in the fandom so I had to put it on the list. Apocalyptic Dean gets sent to 2009 right after Sam tries to kill himself to get away from Lucifer. This Dean knows what it’s like to truly lose his other half and so treats Sam with the love he deserves. I love affectionate Sam/Dean. Even better, other Dean watches it all happen and is jealous of himself.
Sincerely, Sam by Samcursed
Summary: Sam Winchester is praying for death.
Dean's already gone after sacrificing himself to take out Amara and Sam's losing more and more of himself each day at Lady Bevell's hands. He's reached his limit. Then suddenly he finds himself in 1998 and the sole focus of a supernatural lawyer who has one very firm request; She needs Sam to cure a demon. Dad, Dean, and Bobby won't let him out of their sights and Sam has enough to juggle with the swarm of supernatural creatures who think the Boy King has come back to take his crown.
Envy’s notes: Older Sam and younger Sam switch places so it has younger Dean/older Sam in the past and younger Sam/older Dean in the future. Sam uses his powers in this and the demons rebel because their boyking has arrived, some demons are trying to break the seals decades earlier because Lucifer has also noticed Sam’s presence. Oh and Sam think his Dean is dead and wants to join him.
The Truth In The Lie by flawedamythyst
Summary: Sam and Dean pretend to be gay lovers while they hunt a monster on a bus tour of Nova Scotia.
Envy’s notes: Lots of physical affection and damn do I love these original characters. Sam and Dean go undercover as a couple on a bus tour for gay men, they do a lot of sightseeing. There’s this guy hitting on Sam and he has no idea because he can’t read signals, but Dean does notice.
Pacified by Parroticat (hanover)
Summary: Set in season 7 after they've got Lucifer out of Sam's head. Sam starts having nightmares, waking up every night screaming himself hoarse, weak and exhausted. Dean fixes it the only way that has ever worked, no matter how embarrassing Sam finds it.
Envy’s notes: Sam starts wetting the bed after going to hell, Dean takes care of it. Not a kinky fic, just hurt/comfort.
073 – Barry by ani_coolgirl
Summary: In remembrance of the life and times of Barry Cook. Sam remembers perhaps a bit too much.
Envy’s notes: In which Barry helped Sam find out his sexuality and knew Sam’s brother was also Sam’s first crush. When Sam tells Dean about Barry, he realises Sam has feelings for him.
For You to Me are the Only One by flowerofnettles
Summary: Classic trope, Winchester Drama version—Before the boys hit her with witch-killin’ bullets, the monster of the week puts a curse on Dean: either he has sex within five days, or his heart will give out. The catch? The curse was designed to make its target violent during sex, and naturally Dean refuses to put anyone’s life at risk to save his own. As the fifth day gets closer, a desperate Sam makes the choice for them both, by offering (with a little help from Castiel’s angel powers) the only person he’s willing to risk at Dean’s hands: himself. Only when it ends they’ve got bigger problems, because Sam never expected that a few nights pretending to be a stranger volunteering to take care of Dean could lead to such shocking discoveries about himself, his brother, and the strength of the bond tying their souls together.
Envy’s notes: Not as smutty as it sounds. It has a lot of feels also. Hidden identity!Sam/cursed Dean. It’s all very consensual (except for Dean not knowing it’s Sam). It’s over 50k words so you can spend the night reading it.
It's Just Research by brokenlittleboy
Summary: Sam becomes obsessed with the "wincest" shippers on the forums for fans of Carver Edlund's "Supernatural." Dean finds out.
Envy’s notes: Sam starts reading wincest and then becomes a fanfiction writer because what better way to let all those feelings out?
Well Jung by alwaysthrowsscissors
Summary: The brothers are faced with their broken relationship in the aftermath of Gadreel’s possession and Kevin’s death. In an act of desperation, they go to couple’s therapy to try to work things out. It may bring them closer than they bargained for. This fic starts off funny and becomes more intimate and serious as the boys navigate their first time and process it with their therapist.
Envy’s notes: Sam and Dean go to a couple’s therapist to fix their relationship, they misunderstand some of their therapist’s advice.
Sam’s brow got further and further stitched as he looked at article after article. “She can’t possibly have meant this.”
“What do you mean?"
“It’s all...sex stuff," Sam said, crinkling his nose in disgust.
Baby Bird by TheQuietWings
Summary: Sam is sick, and Dean has some… unconventional methods to make him eat.
Envy’s notes: Dean feeds Sam mouth to mouth. Oddly sweet.
Embarrassing Crushes by Marie_Tomas
Summary: Sam and Dean get drunk and share a few embarrassing stories. When they ask each other about their most embarrassing crushes, the answers that they both give are kind of...surprising.
Envy’s notes: This one is really sweet and I love the way Dean reacts to Sam’s confession.
When This is Over, We Should Really Have Angry Sex by mjlove1 and oulfulsam
Summary: A Wincestous deleted scenes take on "Red Sky At Morning" S3 While Sam Dean & Bela are at the party Sam overhears something that leads to a very jealous miscommunication. Rated M for graphic Wincest in Ch2. 2-shot written w/ the wonderful& talented MJLove
Envy’s notes: Established wincest. Sam overhears what the guard says and thinks Dean actually slept with Bella.
023 – confession by ani_coolgirl
Summary: There are some things you can only say when you're alone. What Sam doesn't realize is that he's not alone.
Envy’s notes: Ghost!Dean hears Sam talking to his comatose body in S2:E01 Time of Dying. Why can they only be sweet to one another when one of them is dying??
Always My Pretty Baby by taiyou_nii_chan
Summary: Sam has always been Dean's "pretty baby" but years have gone by and he hasn't been feeling "pretty" or "a baby" lately. Dean takes care of fixing that.
Envy’s notes: A personal favourite because Sam doesn’t get called pretty enough, it’s always Dean :(
017 – backfire by ani_coolgirl
Summary: Sam gets Dean back for the itching powder. It doesn't quite go like he planned.
Envy’s notes: Sam pranks Dean by making someone think they’re a couple. You can never go wrong with pretend relationship fics.
I Can't Forget the Time or Place Where We Just Met by alwaysthrowsscissors
Summary: Sam and Dean fall asleep on the couch, wake up cursed with amnesia, and assume they're in a relationship. After exploring their surroundings, they can't keep their hands off each other any longer. The curse breaks mid-sex.
Envy’s notes: Another one of my favourite tropes. Both have amnesia and assume they’re a couple.
Hell changes people by blueingaround
Summary: After Sam almost sees Dean die in that barn, he can't quite shake the feeling that something's going to happen if he loses sight of him. He had never wanted to be as close to his brother as now. He can't take his eyes off him. After weeks of recovery, Dean wants to go back to hunting, but Sam wants him to just stay home. He knows the way he feels about his brother is wrong, but after hell, Sam finds it difficult to remember social norms.
aka Sam is struggling after Dean's recovery and they go on a hunt together. Some monster is hunting incestuous couples and some feelings are revealed. They decided to have sex to play bait for the monster and this turns out way more emotional than they both had expected it.
Envy’s notes: Sam has wanted to be closer to Dean ever since going to hell. Here’s one of my favourite pieces of dialogue:
“You're telling me you're fine with incest?”
“As long as no one's getting hurt? Sure.” Sam said, shrugging again.
Dean was silent for a few seconds. Sam turned to look at him and saw his brother with a frown and his mouth slightly open in astonishment.
“You're fucked in the head, Sam.”
“We both are.” He said. “It just seems I'm a little more messed up than you are. But that isn't news.”

"Yeah, actually. I am. I guess you could say I am both lost and looking for someone." Sam admitted, he had just left what he thought was Texas, or so he was assuming that was the last place he was in. However, now he was in Ivy Cove and that was unsettling because Sam had never heard of this place. "I guess I was wondering if I could find my brother here, at least. Maybe he'd know what was going on..or maybe you do."
Tumblr media
Eowyn wasn't all that sure when she had started coming to The Grove, possibly before her memories had returned, and now it was just a way to hold onto something lost. All of it was hazy, and she was trying to somehow separate her memories into something that made sense. She wasn't sure she was doing so well with that. At least it didn't seem like she was alone in that. "Are you looking for someone? You look a little lost" she finally ashed.

"Yeah, I don't know what's going on with this thing." Sam groaned, shaking his head. "This is what I get for trying to buy a car on my own. I don't know much about them but like three things." He admitted.

Based on S11EP13 Love Hurts (in which a supernatural creature called a Qareen appears to you as the person you desire the most, in an attempt to steal your heart)
TW: internalized homophobia, derogatory terms, John Winchester being a shitty dad
AO3 link
Dean's ready for it, he knows the bastard is around here somewhere and all he has to do is find it and kill it (or at least hold it off until Sam finds its heart, and stabs the damn thing)
He and Sam had been theorizing over who it might appear to them as, joking over childhood crushes and celebrities, but as the creature came into sight Dean's heart sunk. Some part of him knew who it would be, but he thought maybe if he didn't allow the thought to take hold -if he kept the idea in his peripheral vision, not looking directly at it- that it wouldn't be true.
but now the manifestation of his desire was staring directly at him, and it couldn't be ignored.
"Hello Dean"
The gravelly voice sounded the same as it had a hundred times before. The downward tilt to the corner of his eyes was the same, as was the slight skew to his blue tie. It was exactly as he saw Cas, in his mind's eye.
"oh don't try to be cute, I know exactly what you are Qareen"
He didn't want to have to try to kill this thing as it flawlessly imitated Cas, but at his words, the creature allowed its head to softly tilt to the side and his - its - eyes to slightly narrow. An expression that was so painfully Cas, that Dean was torn between pain and anger.
"I understand, Dean" the creature speaks, stepping slightly closer to the large work table that separates them
"is that right?" he responds, trying to focus on anything other than how much this thing looks like Cas, having to remind himself that it was an illusion, despite the tight feeling in his chest that always seemed to respond to the other man's micro-expressions.
The creature continued forward toward him "The longing in your heart? I feel it too"
If only the circumstances had been different, if only this was Cas, the words might have felt like a relief instead of so painfully raw.
"well that's touching" Dean began, as he tried to subtly move toward a knife wedged into the wood of the workbench "considering you don't have a heart. Considering... you're not Cas"
Dean didnt know if he was saying it aloud for the creature, or just to reassure himself. So that when he inevitably plunged a knife into this thing, he would know the expression of pain didn't truly belong to his friend.
"who I am doesn't matter" A small smile graced Cas' lips " The real question, is who are you?" Cas' eyes looked at Dean the way they had so many times like he was trying to understand him; like he thought if he stared long enough he could unravel the enigma that was Dean Winchester.
"what do you mean, who am I?" Dean trying to inch toward the knife, but the Qareen was tracing his movements
"You're a mystery. I can see inside your heart" They are both moving in sync, both so aware of the other " Feel the love you feel"
the use of that word causes Dean to stop in his tracks, and the creature stops with him "Except, its cloaked in shame"
and that's it isn't it? what it's all about. Dean has never been one to shy away from romantic feelings. Whereas one could describe him as emotionally constipated in almost every other area, romance had always been the easiest one, and even if he got turned down it never really affected how he approached potential partners.
But Cas was different. For starters he wasn't human, a factor he had gotten over a while ago but something that at the beginning had always been in the back of his mind. Back when Cas still spoke like an angel, 'raising him from perdition' and then subsequently threatening to throw him straight back to it. But it had been a long time since that mattered, a long time since he viewed Cas as Other in that way. and yet there was something so trivial yet so big that held him back. Cas was a man, his vessel was at least. And no matter how many people he meets, how much he grows and changes, his father is always there.
Throw away comments about 'pansys' and 'queers' and much harsher words that Dean doesn't even like to think. He can still remember his father watching the news and tutting at why "they have to go and get married, why can't they just stop shoving it in everyone's faces".
It felt wrong even back then, and Dean knows his father was wrong. Knows that even though he loves him, that he was an asshole on his best days. But the idea of people looking at him and thinking all those horrible things, the knowledge of what his father would think of him if he could see him now, always held him back.
When he spent too long looking into Cas' eyes, when Cas touched him and he felt himself light up, when he said something that sounded slightly too affectionate, he would feel his father's shame like a weight dropping down onto him.
He knew that he and Cas had something, that they shared a "more profound bond", as the angel had put it. But he could never get past the shame that lurked within him.
"when it comes to this" the creature continued, looking down at the shape it had taken, lifting a hand to Cas' chest and rubbing across it "You can't help yourself, so why fight it?"
To hear these words in Cas' voice; it was almost too much.
The creature was stalking its way forward "Just give in"
Ah, see that was just enough. That was so unlike Cas, to ask him to give in to anything, to not kick and fight the whole way as he always did, that it knocked Dean's mind out of its self-loathing and allowed him to act, to plan.
"yeah, you know what? You're right" suddenly feeling more confident that this was just another monster, just another hunt
"The real Cas, he does have a hold over me" It was the closest he had even come to admitting what it really was "but you... are nothing but a cheap imitation"
the creature was almost close enough to rip his heart from his chest, so he acted and did the first thing he could think of. He picked up a metal table to the side of him, holding it up like a shield just before the creature's hand burst right through the metal as if it were paper.
funnily enough, this felt more like Cas than the creature had been before, reminding Dean of when they first knew each other and Cas would constantly startle Dean with effortless strength. Holding a pipe Bobby swung directly for his head or lifting an entire anvil up as if he were holding a pillow.
Dean was taken out of his musings by the threat of losing his head as the creature pulled its arm free and he had to leap away rolling over the top of the workbench, just before the Qareen's hand went right through the thick wood. The way it moved was very stiff, not very artful, clearly not used to having to work physically for its food, used to victims presenting themselves eagerly for the face of their desires.
Then Dean's eyes caught on the knife he had been inching toward earlier, and he made a grab for it swinging haphazardly for the imitation of Cas' face, only to have his hand grabbed firmly, the creature squeezing at his arm until he was forced to relinquish the blade.
He was then shoved against the wall, held in place by Cas' large hand at his shoulder, the other raising, ready to push through layers of skin, muscle, and bone, to rip his heart straight from his body. Dean had no time to be scared, but if he had time to reflect he would have thought that dying to Cas' hands wouldn't be the worst way he could go.
but then it all stopped, the creature froze before stumbling back. Cas' face twisted in pain as it began to shake and scream before the body began to dissolve into smoke, and it all collapsed into a central blue light, almost like a star.
and then it was gone. And Sam was calling his name.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not much had been said on the ride back to their motel, mostly focusing on cleaning up their mess, and driving home the victim. But now they were packing up their few things into duffel bags, getting ready to drive back to the bunker.
As Dean was shoving clothes unfolded into his bag, Sam's voice came from behind him "So you gonna keep me in suspense here or what?"
Dean continued to pack, hoping Sam wasnt asking what he thought "About what?"
"Who was it?" Sam was prying, he seemed casual about it, still moving between the bed and his bag as he grabbed and folded each item
"it, uh" Dean began to speak before he even knew what he was going to say. The truth? Or some half-baked lie about Daisy Duke batting her eyelashes at him before she lunged for his heart? but a calm almost washed over him as he allowed himself to be honest.
"it was Cas."
"huh." the was a pause where Dean felt like he truly could throw up "Does that surprise you?"
all his fear turned incredulous "That doesnt surprise you?"
For a moment the shame from his father came back, and the idea that something about him looked gay came into his mind. What if everyone knew? like it was something they could just tell about him. But Dean had to mentally remind himself that this was Sam, that his Dad was a bigot, that his dad hadn't been around to judge him for a long time now.
"Honestly?" Sam said, as if his answer was obvious
"Honestly." Dean parroted, his defensive nature rising up "What you seriously think Cas, the poor excuse for an angel that dresses like an accountant, is my deepest desire?"
it felt wrong to deflect, to be hurtful about Cas just because he was afraid, but the words just fell out.
"he isn't?" Sam responded simply
"No!" Dean's voice pitched up at the end of the syllable, and it sounded like a lie, even to his ears. "He cant be."
"why not?" the blunt way Sam was addressing him wasn't helping the rising panic in his chest
"Why? Because that means I'm-" The words get stuck, he can't say them, especially when he knows how he'll sound as they come out of his mouth. The Qareen was right, he's still ashamed.
"what Dean?" Sam's voice is soft, like he knows exactly what Dean is thinking, like he wants to say it for him so he doesn't have too
But Dean has to be the one to say it, he knows this. He attempts to steel his expression, but as the words come out he knows he sounds afraid "It would mean I'm - " Queer, a pansy, an embarrassment "Gay"
Even though they both knew what he was going to say, Sam's face changes to one of soft surprise "Dean, Did you honestly think that something like that would matter to me?"
Dean didnt know what to say. Logically he knew it wouldn't, but some part of him felt like it would somehow make him less of Sam's tough older brother, like somehow he would be letting him down, as irrational as it sounded
Sam took Dean's silence as a sign to continue "Look I know Dad had some stupid ideas about this kind of thing, but you gotta know that he was an idiot"
some old part of Dean wanted to get annoyed at Sam for speaking out against their father, for disgracing his memory, but the feeling wasn't strong enough for him to act on right now.
"you need to know that... you and Cas" his little brother, so smart seemed like he had no idea how to put his thoughts into words "it would be okay"
the words Sam settled on were simple but it felt like such sweet relief, because really that was all Dean wanted. For how he felt to be okay. To not feel like he was wrong every time he let his guard down. every time he let himself want. He didnt quite feel like he was okay, but hearing the words from Sam made him feel a hell of a lot closer to believing.
"Thanks, Sammy" Maybe in another world he could have teared up at a time like this and told his brother how much his acceptance meant to him. But for now, all he could do was give his beanpole of a brother a strong slap on the arm and say "Let's go home", home to where Cas is.
The Devil You Know
Masterlist pt 1
Masterlist pt 2
The boys and I followed a doctor through a hospital full of very sick patience, putting on face masks to protect us and them. "Check it out...I look like the king of pop." Dean said, as he gestures to his masked face. Sam and I sigh at this while Dean chuckles. "Too soon?" He asked. "Too soon." Sam replied. "Yeah, c'mon, I'm still not over that. Been listening to Thriller nonstop." I grumbled.
"Don't get me wrong...I'm glad the CDC is here, but what we really need is vaccine." The doctor said, stopping and turning around to look at us. "You got that right." I muttered, looking around at all the sick people sitting in the waiting room. "Well, tell me, have you noticed anything unusual about the strain...Any signs of behavioral change, like aggression, maybe?" Sam asked the doctor. "Excuse me?" She asked, confused.
"Have the flu victims shown any signs of, uh, homicidal tendencies?" Dean asked. The doctor look between us and chuckles. "uh...Symptomatically speaking, we're looking at a relatively mild case of swine flu here. Probably add up to a miserable week off of work, and that's about it." She said. "So nothing unusual." I said, questionable. "Hmm. Day and a half ago, we didn't have a single case. Now we're looking at over 70. The infectious equivalent of a briefcase bomb. So, yeah, I might call that a little unusual." The doctor explained as she signs something for another doctor.
"Day and a half?" Sam said to Dean and I. "That's the same time those statues started crying." I said. "Yep." Sam replied. "I'm sorry. What was that?" The doctor asked. "What was what?" I asked. "Did you just say a bunch of statues started crying?" The doctor asked.
"What?" Sam asked then laughs. "Why, no. No. W-who would..." He said. "Who would say that, huh? Crazy people." Dean said. "Exactly." Sam said. "Yeah, which we are not." I said. "No." Sam said. The doctor looks between us, confused. "Just...Get us some vaccine." She said, we nodded and she walks off with the other doctor.
Later, we were driving down a dark road in the Impala, while Bobby talks on speakerphone. "Let me guess...another steamin'-hot pile of swine flu." He said. "Yep." Dean replied. "Doesn't make any sense, Bobby. Pestilence touched down here. I'm sure of it." Sam said, certain.
"But why is he dealing them soft serve like swine flu when he's got the croatoan virus up his sleeve? I-I-I don't get it." Dean said. "Doesn't matter what the sick son of a bitch is doing. What matters is this is the fourth town he's hit. That we know of and we're still eating his dust. Did you get anything? We got even a snowball at probable next target?" Bobby asked. "Uh, no pattern we can see." I said and Bobby sighs.
"Okay. Hold on." He said, we then heard a squeaky noise from his wheelchair. "Well, far as I can tell, he's still heading East, So...Head East, I guess." He said, unsure. "East?" The boys and I said in unison. "Bobby, we're in West Nevada. East is practically all there is." Dean said. "Yeah, well, you better get to drivin'." Bobby replied and Sam hangs up the phone and sighs.
"Say..." A voice said and I jump, rearing to the left behind Dean as Crowley was now suddenly sitting in the backseat beside me. "I've got an idea." He said. The tires screech as Dean swerves, slamming on the brakes. Sam tries to stab Crowley with Ruby's knife, but only stabs the seat of the Impala.
"Did you get him?" Dean asked. "He's gone." I replied then we hear a tap on Sam's window. Sam pulls the knife out of the seat and we look to see Crowley was now standing outside the car. "Fancy a fag and a chat?" He asked but then the boys and I get out of the car. "You're upset. We should discuss it. Not here, but..." Crowley said, backing up as Sam and I stalk after him.
"You want to talk? After what you did to us?" Sam asked. "After what I...what I did to you?! I gave you the Colt!" Crowley said, now standing in front of Dean. "Yeah, and you knew it wouldn't work against the devil!" Sam growled. "I never!" Crowley said, sounding offended. "You set us up. We lost people on that suicide run! GOOD people!" I exclaimed, angrily. "Who you take on the ride is your own business!" Crowley said.
Crowley then he turns to look at Dean. "Look, everything is still the same. W-we're all still in this together." He said, grinning. "Sure we are." Sam said and he attempts to stab Crowley again, but Crowley teleports behind him. "Call your dog off, please." Crowley said to Dean. Sam was about to advance on Crowley again but Dean grabs his arms, stopping him. "Give us one good reason." I said. "I can give you Pestilence." Crowley replied.
"What do you know about Pestilence?" Dean asked. "I know how to get him." Crowley said and Dean and I look at him surprised.  That's got your interest, doesn't it?" Crowley asked, noticing our looks. Sam looks between Dean and I. "Are you actually listening to this?" He asked us. "Sam..." I try to say. "Are you friggin' nuts?!" Sam exclaimed. "Shut up for a second, Sam!" Dean growled.
"Shut up, the lot of you! Look...I swear...I thought the Colt would work. It's an honest mistake. It's all part of the learning process. But nothing's changed. I still want the devil dead. Well...one thing's changed. Now the devil knows that I want him dead. Which, by the way, makes me the most buggered son in all of creation." Crowley explained. "Holy crap. We don't care." Dean grumbled and Crowley looks at him, offended. "They burnt down my house!" He said, no one says anything. "THEY ATE MY TAILOR!" He yelled, Dean just rolls his eyes.
"Two months under a rock, like a bloody salamander! Every demon on hell and Earth's got his eyes out for me! And yet...Here I am...Last place I should be...In the road, talking to Sam and Dean Winchester and their little sidekick, (y/n) (l/n), under a freaking SPOTLIGHT!" Crowley yelled, then he gestures to the light above us and it explodes. "So come with me. Please." He pleaded after composing himself.
The boys and I continue staring at him, not moving or say anything. "Do you want the horsemen rings or not? Yes, I know all about that. Shall we?" Crowley asked. The boys and I exchanged, warily, looks.
We let Crowley back in the Impala and he gave us directions to an abandoned house. Crowley sighs as we enter the house. "Here we are. My life on the lam. How the mighty have fallen. Single-pane glass, Used contraception in the fireplace." He said lighting the fire with just a hand gesture.
"The water damage alone." Crowley said, turning around to face us. "My heart's bleeding for you. Now, how do you know about the rings?" I asked. "Well, now...I've been keeping a close eye on you lot." Crowley said. "We got hex bags. We're hidden from demons." I said. "All but one." Crowley said, holding up his index finger then points to himself.
"That night you broke into my house, our first date, my valet hid a tracking device in your car. A magical coin that easily trumps your little bags o' bones. It allows me to hear things, too. And, my, the things I've heard." Crowley said before he chuckles then looks at me and Dean. "I'd have to say the little break-up conversation you two had, left me heartbroken. Oscar worthy." Crowley said and my hands start to shake with anger. "Unless you want to keep your tongue, I'd suggest you shut up." I growled and Crowley gives me an impressed look.
"My, my, my....feisty one." He mutters, teasingly, then he turns to Dean. "No wonder you like her so much." He said and I could see Dean clenching his jaw. "So!" Crowley said, getting our attention. "You want to cram the devil back in the box? Cunning scheme. I want in." He said. "You said you could get us Pestilence." Dean said.
"Well, now...I don't know where Pestilence is...Per Se. But I do know the demon who does. He's what you might call the horsemen's stable boy. He handles their itineraries, their personal needs. He's who you want believe me. He'll tell us where Sneezy's at." Crowley explained. "Well, how do we get him to spill? Rip out his toenails?" I asked. "No. Nuts at his pay grade don't crack. We bring him here, then I sell him." Crowley replied. "Sell him?" Sam asked.
"Please. I've sold sin to saints for centuries. Think I can't close one little demon?" Crowley said. "All right, so where's this demon of yours?" I asked.
Later, the boys and I were loading our guns in a duffel bag when Sam turns to us. "Why are we even listening to him, guys? This is totally insane." Sam said. "I don't disagree." Dean muttered. "Me either." I said then Crowley claps his hands together getting our attention. "One big happy family, are we, then? Fantastic." He said. "You ready to go?" I asked him. "Yes. Yes. I am. Sam, keep the home fires burning." Crowley said, we look at him confused.
"What are you talking about?" I asked. "Sam's not coming." Crowley replied. "And why the hell not?" Sam asked. "Because I don't like you...I don't trust you...And oh, yes. You keep trying to kill me." Crowley said. "There's no damn way. This isn't gonna happen!" Sam growled. "I'm not asking you, am I? 'cause you're not invited. I'm asking them." Crowley said, pointing at Dean and I.
"What's it gonna be?" He asked us. Sam look at us then back at Crowley, who scoffs. "Lady, gentlemen...Enjoy your last few sunsets." He said, turning and walking away. "Wait." Dean said, getting him to stop.
Dean looks to me and I nod. "We'll go." He said, grabbing the duffle back and throwing it over his shoulder. "What can we say? We believe the guy." Dean said to Sam before following him to the door.
Sam then turns to me. "(Y/n)..." He said. I look down, walking to the doorway where I stop and turn back to him. "Sam, we don't have much of a choice. We gotta try something." I said and Sam stares at me not say anything. I sigh and turn to follow Dean and Crowley to the Impala.
Dean and I were using binoculars to watch the Niveus Pharmaceuticals building from the Impala. "Demons." Dean said, lowering his binoculars. "Nah. Human shields. The demons are up top. 12th floor." Crowley said, from the backseat. "All right, then. We'll have to find a way in through the back." I said, lowering my binoculars away. "You (l/n)s and Winchesters make everything so complicated." Crowley said then disappears. "Ah, crap." Dean grumbled. "I don't like that." I said.
Dean and I look through our binoculars again to see Crowley reappearing in the building behind the security guard. He waved to us then slits the guard's throat. "Oh, crap. Crap! Crap!" Dean said as we get out of the car and run to the door of the building.
Once we get there, Dean knocks on the door. "Door's open!" Crowley yelled and we enter the building to see the other guard is dead. Dean and I gesture to Crowley like 'what the hell?'
"What?" Crowley asked, cleaning his knife. "You killed them?" I asked. Crowley sniffs and puts his knife away then steps over the other guards. "We're on a tight schedule. Come on." He said turning us away and walks us to the elevator. I look over my shoulder at the guard. "Now you're squeamish? Please." Crowley said, making me turn away.
Dean and I step inside the elevator but Crowley does not. Instead he just hits the 12th button for us. "Go get 'em, tigers." He said.
The elevator door starts to shut but Dean held out his hand to stop it. "Wh...You're not coming?" Dean asked. "Oh, no. It's not safe up there. There's demons." Crowley replied. "Yeah, we get that." I said, annoyed. "Look, just do what I told you, a-and try to be convincing. It'll work like a charm. Trust me." Crowley said, pushing Dean back so the door could close. Crowley smiles and waves goodbye before the door shuts and the elevator carries us up.
Arriving on the 12th floor, Dean and I kill the demons guarding the office door when suddenly the door opens on it's own. Inside the office, a demon sits at a desk. "Dean Winchester. (Y/n) (l/n). What, no appointment?" He asked us. "Kind of an 11th-hour thing, you know?" Dean replied as we step over the bodies to enter the office. "Well, then, you're just on time." The demon said, closing the door with a gesture. "Have a seat." He said, turning the chairs in front of his desk with a gesture. "How's your brother?" he asked Dean.
Dean doesn't say anything and we take a seat in the chairs, turning them towards the desk. "Well, down to business, then. What can I do for you?" The demon asked, closing his laptop and smiling at us. "Actually, it's about what we can do for you." I said. "Really?" The demon asked.
"Us and Sam dropped two of your jockeys. I think you know that." Dean said. "Yes. I got the memo." The demon replied. "Well, we kept their, uh, secret power rings. Which is why we're here. We heard some folks saying that you wanted them back and you were willing to pay." I said.
The demon leans back in his chair, thinking. "Hmm. Where are they?" He asked. "Not here. But you want them, you'll come with us. Nice and civil. We'll get out of your little batcave here, and we'll discuss a transaction." Dean said.
"Who says I want them?" The demon asked, makng Dean and I look at him confused. "What?" Dean and I asked. "Who...Says...I want them?" He asked. "You know...Folks." I replied, shrugging. The demon smiles at us and we, nervously, smile back.
"See..." The demon said, he clears throat and stood up, walking around his desk to sit on it in front of us. "War and Famine, even if I could cram the rings back on their bony fingers, I doubt it would do much good. They're withered husks right now. Fetal position on the floor. All thanks to you. So I don't want the rings. What I want is retribution. And I'm gonna rip it right out of your assess!" He growls then he throws us out through the office door, crashing on the floor.
"This...is so good." The demon said walking over to Dean and I as we struggle to get up. The demon kicks us each in the stomach, keeping us down, and he chuckles. "...Therapeutic, for sure. You know, guys, I really owe you one, buddies, 'cause I feel..." The demon said as he kicks us again. "So...Much..." He kicks us again. "Better!" And kicks us again. The demon let's out a breath as he fixes his hair.
Dean and I laid on the floor, groaning in pain, until we eventually managed to escape the demon and ran to the elevator. I push the buttons repeatedly as the demon calls out to us. "Guys, where are you going? We're just getting started!"
The elevator door closes and carries us down to the ground floor, it dings and the door opens. We exit the elevator cautiously, seeing now one in sight. Suddenly something hits me on the back of my head and I fell to the ground and slide across the floor along with Dean. "Good meeting, guys. You know, I'm excited." The demon said. Then Crowley approaches from behind, and drops a sack covered in a devil's trap over the demon's head, then bashes his head with a crowbar.
"Evening, Uncle." Crowley said, then starts hitting the demon a couple more times on the head with the crowbar, until the demon drop to the floor.
Dean and I look at the demon lying unconscious on the floor then up at Crowley, who smiles. "What the hell was that?" Dean asked, helping me up as he stands. "That was perfect." Crowley said. "Perfect? He didn't want the rings. He wanted us." I said. "Imagine the surprise on your faces." Crowley said. "What?" I asked, confused. "Your ignorance and misinformation. I mean, completely authentic. You can't fake that." Crowley said and we glared back at him.
"What? I-it went like clockwork." He said. "Not for us, you son of a bitch!" Dean growled. "That's what you get working with a demon." Crowley said, pointing at him with the crowbar and grinning.
Later, we were driving back towards the abandon house as I was wiping the blood off mine and Dean's faces. Crowley was carving a sigil into the demon's torso. "Hey, hot stuff, watch the upholstery!" Dean said to Crowley. "Up yours, mate. This bit of carving will tie our friend here down. No zapping off, no smoking out. Locked in the meat suit...An important piece of our bargaining strategy. Now, up here, we don't want I-50. Take 93 north." Crowley said.
"What are you talking about?" I asked. "Look, we can't take this guy back to Sam." Crowley said. "Why the hell not?" Dean asked, but Crowley doesn't answer. "Crowley!" I exclaimed. "They got history, all right?" Crowley said. Dean angrily screeches the Impala to a halt. "You want to go anywhere, you start talking. What history?" He asked.
*3rd Person P.O.V*
Back at the abandoned house, Sam was sitting on a bed waiting. He hears The Impala approaching and finds Crowley downstairs. "Where's Dean and (y/n)?" He asked, warily.
"Now...For the record, I'm against this. Negotiating a high-level defection. It's very delicate business." Crowley said. Sam narrows his eyes and tries to go into the other room, but Crowley held up his hand, stopping him. "What are you talking about?" Sam asked. "I begged Dean and (y/n) not to come back. We should be miles away...from you. Your brother replied with a colorful rejoinder about my 'corn chute.'" Crowley said and Sam scoffs.
"So, go ahead. Go ruin our last best hope." Crowley said. Sam stares at him for a moment then slips pass him. "It's only the end of the world." Crowley said as Sam goes into the other room.
*(y/n)'s POV*
Sam enters the room where Dean and I have the demon still hooded and tied to a chair in a devil's trap. "Sam." I said, walking up to him as Dean finishes tightening the rope. "What's going on, guys?" Sam asked, wary. "We need you to stay on mission, okay? Focused." I said, firmly. "I don't understand. What's all this about?" Sam asked. "We're doing this 'cause we trust you." Dean said, walking around the demon to join me. "Trust me to what?" Sam asked.
"Sam?" the demon said, before Dean or I could say anything. Sam looks at the hooded man, confused, as the demon clears throat. "Sam, is that you?" He asked. Dean removes the hood for Sam to see. "Brady?" Sam muttered, surprise, and Brady chuckles. "Brady hasn't been Brady in years. Not since, oh...middle of our sophomore year?" He said and Sam's eyes widen.
"What?" He asked. "That's right." Brady said. Sam glances at me and Dean then, quickly, back to Brady. "You had a devil on your shoulder even back then. All right, now, let it all sink in." Brady said. "You son of a bitch." Sam whispered. "You son of a bitch!" He yelled, approaching Brady. "YOU INTRODUCED ME TO JESS!" He shouted as Dean and I hold him back. "Ding, ding! I think he's got it!" Brady said.
Sam struggles to push past us to get to Brady. "Damn it, Sam!" Dean growled. "I'm gonna kill you!" Sam growled at Brady as Dean and I push Sam out of the room, while Brady laughs.
Dean shoves Sam into the living room and Sam sighs then turns trying to go back but Dean pushes him back. "HEY! That's enough." Dean said, firmly. "Get out of my way." Sam said, calmly. "No." I said, firmly. Sam grits his teeth as he tries to stay calm. "Get out of my way, guys." He said.
"There is only one way to win, and it ain't by killing that thing in there." Dean said as Crowley walks up. "Well...sounds like you got him nice and fluffed. Thanks so much." Crowley said before he walks off to talk to Brady.
"Listen to me. We need Pestilence to get at the devil, and we need Brady to get to Pestilence." Dean said. "Why? Because Crowley said so? Because we trust him now? Like I trusted Ruby? Or like I trusted Brady back at school?" Sam asked.
"Sam, listen. I get it, you're pissed but you have to trust us when we say we need him. Brady is our only lead to Pestilence, okay?" I said and Sam looks over at me. I walk up to him and place a hand on his shoulder. "This gets us one step closer to taking down Lucifer. And once we find out where Pestilence is, then you can kill him in any way, shape or form you want to." I said and Sam stares at me before he looks down.
*3rd Person POV*
Meanwhile, Crowley brought a chair over to Brady and straddles it. "Look...Do the math yourself. If Lucifer wins, he'll turn this place into his kingdom. When the morningstar cleans house, we all get the mop." Crowley said. "He created us. Why would he destroy us? That makes no sense." Brady said.
"Look at who...at what he is. Then take a look at what we are." Crowley said. "Maybe you should be a little less worried about our necks and be a little more worried about yours." Brady replied. "Has crossed my mind. That's not really the point." Crowley said. "Actually, Crowley, that is the point. No one will know greater torment than you. Lucifer is never gonna let you die. As for me, I know the score. I'm dead, whether I tell you anything or not. So I think I'll die on the winning side, thanks." Brady said. "Good talk. Cheers." Crowley said, getting up.
*(y/n)'s POV*
Dean and I were sitting at the table, having a beer when Crowley comes back in. "Well, how'd it go? He buy your girl scout cookies?" Dean asked. "Not yet." Crowley said then he noticed that Sam was gone. "Where's your moose?" Crowley asked. "He's cooling off." I replied. "All right, then. Get bent." Crowley said. "You going somewhere?" Dean asked. "Well, he won't budge, so now I go stick my neck out." Crowley said.
"What are you gonna do?" I asked, worried. "Exactly the kind of desperate swashbuckle I've been trying to avoid. Now I go kick open a hive of demons. This whole bloody ring business better work." Crowley said and he disappears.
Later, Dean goes into the bathroom to wash his face and I walk up beside him. "Dean...?" I asked and he hums at me. "Be honest...is this the right thing to do?" I asked. Dean sighs then turning off the sink and stands up to look at me. "No, not really. But..." he started to say but then the door shuts behind us. "Sam?" I called out and I go up the door, and grabbed the knob.
"He's locked us in!" I growled and Dean comes up next to me and tries the door.
*3rd Person POV*
Sam had shut the door and put a chair against the doorknob, preventing Dean and (y/n) from exiting, as they stood and talked in the bathroom. "Sam?" (Y/n) called out as he hears the door knob jiggle. "Come on, Sam! Don't do this!" Dean growled as the two bang on door. Sam ignores them and takes out Ruby's knife. "Sam, come on! Hey! Open the door! Open the door!" Dean and (y/n) shout as Sam leaves the two of them trap and goes to Brady.
"Well, here we go. We doing last words or no?" Brady asked. "Sophomore year, huh?" Sam asked, walking around to stand in front of him. "Brady, here, he was a good kid. Straight arrow. I mean, your best friend, really. Perfect point of access." The demon said. "Thanksgiving." Sam said, questioning.
"Yes, sir. Remember when I came back from break all messed up...Dropped out of pre-med, the drugs, the bitches?" Brady asked and Sam smiles, tightly, as he nods. "That was the new Brady. That was me." He said and Sam glares at him.
"Remember how much time you spent trying to get me back on the right track? You really were a good friend. But ol' yellow eyes didn't send me back to be your friend. No, we could tell we were starting to lose you. You were becoming a mild-mannered, worthless sack of piss. Now, come on. We couldn't have that. You were our favorite. Well, one of our favorites. Azazel also had a soft spot for your friend, (y/n), as well. She was coming along nicely...except for the fact she was always around her Daddy, her weak spot at that point in time." Brady explained, grinning.
Sam breathes in, slowly, and exhales slower, trying so hard to keep himself together. "So he dealt with her father, personally, while I hooked you up with a pure, sweet, innocent piece of tail. And then I toasted her on the ceiling." Brady said as Sam looks down, his hand twitching around the knife as he grips it, tightly.
"That's right...Azazel might have put the hit out on Jessica, but, man, I got to have all the fun!" Brady exclaimed then he laughs. "You know, she thought we were friends, too. Let me right in. She was baking cookies." He taunted and Sam breathes, faster, as his anger starts to take him over.
Brady laughs "She was so surprised...So hurt when I started in on her." Brady said, which set off that spark in Sam. He lunges forward, grabbing Brady by his jacket and holding the knife to his throat.
But Brady just laughs. "Come on! Do it, if it'll make you feel better!" Brady yelled and Sam nicks his throat with the knife. "Do it, Sammy! Do it! Come on! Come on." Brady yelled. Sam glares down at him as he face twitches in anger. Then he let's Brady go and steps back and Brady laughs again. "Ohhhhh." He said, chuckling and sighs. Sam leaves the room walking back to the bathroom.
*(Y/n)'s P.O.V*
Dean paces for a moment while I lean against the sink. "You don't think he'd go through with it, do you?" I asked him, worried. "I don't know what to think anymore." He said then he bangs on the door again. "Hey, hey, hey! All right! Wait! I'm gonna open it." Sam said.
Dean steps back and the door opens, letting us out. "What happened?" I asked. "Nothing." Sam replied. "My ass." Dean growled and we walk back towards the room. "Guys, I'm fine." Sam said. "Yeah? And what about Brady?" I asked and Sam sighs. "Like you guys said...We need him." He said as we reach the room to see Brady is still alive.
"God." a voice said and we jump and turn around to see Crowley, with some blood on him and his suit ripped. "The day I've had." He said, slipping pass us and walking up to Brady. "Good news. You're going to live forever." He said and Brady stares at him. "What did you do?" Brady asked.
"Went over to a demons' nest had a little massacre. Must be losing my touch, though. Let one of the little toads live. Oops. Also might have given said toad the impression that you left your post last night because you and I are wait for it...Lovers in league against Satan." Crowley explained then chuckles and Brady sighs.
"Hello, darling." Crowley said, smiling down at him. "So, now Death is off the table. Now you get to be on the boss's eternal-torment list with little old me." He said. "Oh, no, no, no, no. No." Brady said, shaking his head. "Something else we have in common apart from our torrid passion, of course Craven self-preservation. So, now, why don't you tell me where Pestilence is at?" Crowley asked. Brady open his mouth to say something but stops when we hear howling in the far off distance.
Dean breathes in, sharply, and looks around. "Oh, God, Crowley." Brady said. "Was that a hellhound?" Dean asked Crowley. "I'd say it was." Crowley replied. "Why was that a hellhound?" Dean asked Crowley, who groans and pulls out a coin.
"What's that?" Sam asked. "Remember I was telling you about my crafty little tracking device?" Crowley asked. "Yeah." Sam and I replied. "Demons planted one on me." Crowley said, holding up the coin. "You're saying a hellhound followed you here?" I asked, agitated. "Well, technically, he followed this." Crowley said, waving the coin.
"Get me out of here. I'll tell you anything you want." Brady said. "Shut up." Sam said to him. "Okay, well, then we should go." Dean said. "Sorry, gang. No one knows more about the hounds than I. You're long past the point of go." Crowley said and he tosses the coin to Dean, who catches it.
When we look up Crowley was gone. "Damn it." Dean growled. "I told you!" Sam exclaimed. "Oh, well, good for you." Dean said, mockingly. "Luckily, we have salt in the kitchen." I said, walking towards the kitchen. "We'll watch Brady." Sam said and Brady scoffs. "Watch me? Get me the hell OUT OF HERE!" He yelled, panicked.
The howling and snarling continued as I spotted the salt on the counter. But before I could reach it, a window shatters as the Hellhounds break through. I run out of the kitchen, shutting the door to try and slow the invisible beast down. Of course the hellhound just burst right through the door and I pick up the shotgun and fire at the hellhound to keep it back. I began backing up towards the room when I shout. "Boys!" Then I heard footsteps and I look over to see Dean coming up besides me with his own shotgun.
He fires in direction I was shooting at as we came back into the room, seeing Sam untying Brady. "Salt?" He asked. Neither Dean or I say anything and just reloaded our shotguns as the hellhound growls. "Damn it, get me out of here!" Brady yelled, fearfully. "Shut up!" The boys and I said in unison. "Great. Just great." Brady grumbled.
I pumped my shotgun about to fire on the hellhound until I hear a voice. "Hey!" Crowley yelled, standing in the living room. "You're back?" I asked as I turn to him. "I'm invested. Currently." Crowley replied then a new hellhound barks. "Stay!" Crowley ordered, looking to his right.
"You can control them?" Dean asked. "Not that one." Crowley said, pointing towards me and Dean. "I brought my own." He said, patting the invisible hellhound beside him. "Mine's bigger. SIC HIM, BOY!"
The hellhounds bark and growl as they fight each other, breaking everything in sight. Dean scratches the devil trap with his knife as Sam removes the rope around Brady. "Go, go go go!" Dean said and we run outside and to the Impala, where Crowley already was standing on the passenger side.
"I'll wager $1,000 my pup wins." He said, laughing as he gets in the car. I shoved Brady into the backseat and join the two demons there while the boys sat in front. We drive away as the hellhounds continued, viciously, fight each other.
In an alleyway, Brady hands Crowley a piece of paper. "Yeah. I'm sure Pestilence will be there. Thanks." Brady said. "What do you think?" I asked Crowley. "It's good." Crowley replied, handing Dean the piece of paper.
Crowley turns to look back at Brady. "You got no reason to lie, have you? Like I said before, you're in my boat now." He said. "You've screwed me...for eternity." Brady said. "Nah. Won't last that long. Trust me." Crowley said.
Crowley follows Dean and I down the alley past Sam who is standing, staring at Brady. "Where are you going?" Brady asked. I bend down and begin to pour a salt-line behind Sam. "I'm going to do you a favor." Crowley said to Brady, then turn to Sam. "I expect we'll be in touch." He said, walking away.
I was about to reach the end of the alley, but stop to let Crowley pass. The demon smiles at me as he slips on by then disappears. I then close the salt-line. "What is this?" Brady asked.
"All those angels, all those demons, all those sons of bitches...They just don't get it, do they, boys?" I said. "No, they don't, (y/n)." Sam said. "You see, Brady...We're the ones you should be afraid of." Dean said. Brady scoffs as Sam approaches Brady with Ruby's knife.
"I bet this is a real moment for you, big boy. Gonna make you feel all better?" Brady asask.him. "It's a start." Sam said. Brady starts backing up as Sam continues approaching.
"Gonna make up for all the times that we yanked your chain...Yellow eyes, Ruby, me? But it wasn't all our fault, was it? No, no, no, no. You're the one who trusted us. You're the one who let us into your life, let us whisper in your ear over and over and over again. Ever wonder why that is, Sammy? Ever wonder why we were so in your blind spot? Maybe it's because we got the same stuff in our veins and, deep down, you know you're just like us." Brady explained, grinning at Sam.
Brady lunges at Sam, who nicks him with the blade. Sam pushes him back against the wall and Brady pants in pain, turning around to face him. "Maybe you hate us so much because you hate what you see every time you look in the mirror. You ever think of that?!" Brady asked but Sam doesn't say anything and Brady laughs at his silence. "Maybe the only difference between you and a demon...is your hell is right here." Brady said.
Then Sam stabs Brady hard in the stomach until he dies. He takes the knife out and lets Brady's body slump down to the ground. "Interesting theory." Sam mutters and he walks out the alley, past us. Dean and I turn and watch him leave, worried.
Sam had seen a lot of things in this life, that was for sure. However, when a strange woman comes up to you and asks if you want to see her friend, he wasn't sure if he should say yes or no. Part of him wanted to say yes. The curiosity of what the other had in her pocket was intriguing but then again, with his experience, it could be something that would kill him or torture him. Against his better judgement, he sighed and nodded at the other. "Well, apparently i can't say no. so, i suppose yes, i do want to meet your friend."
she was honestly used to being stared at. being half-dead, half-alive tended to draw a lot of attention. but after years of stares and feeling ashamed, somewhere along the road the warlock just decided to have fun, to embrace it. so, when she caught her “admirer”, she creeped over, spindly, long limbs and all as she advanced.
“h e l l o.” her voice stretched, like a dead victorian woman, a sweet tone luring children to their doom. “would you like to meet my friend? he’s very…entertaining.” she asked, already reaching into her jacket, but waiting for the other’s approval.
hello sweetie!! i wanted to ask you if you could give us your take on john winchester ? people have very different opinions on him and i’d love to hear yours.
hi!!! thanks so much for this ask. it took me a while to gather my thoughts, so there's a relatively long post ahead.
i think that people in fandom tend to go the route of woobifying a character until they can do no wrong in their eyes, or demonising a character until everything they do is wrong. this not only doesn't allow for nuanced takes, which should be possible to make for any well-written, complex character, but also leads to attempts to push blame onto characters instead of just... accepting that the circumstances themselves are shit.
maybe john and sam are similar after all, considering the way that neither of them are extended any due sympathy whatsoever by certain individuals. john, who knew nothing of the supernatural, on an otherwise normal night during which he fell peacefully asleep in front of the television, witnessed his wife be psychically pinned to the ceiling of his baby's nursery and explode in front of both him and his six-month-old. that's bound to change anyone. blaming john entirely for becoming incredibly paranoid over and controlling of his children, and not acknowledging the role of, i don't know, azazel? prince of hell? who engineered all of this?? is so ridiculous i can't even comprehend it. the circumstances are absolutely dreadful, and john wasn't left with much of a choice in the ways he could respond to it. not only would he most likely be driven partially insane by what he witnessed happen to his wife, he would also be led to worry about the safety of his children. killing azazel wasn't just about avenging mary, it was about extinguishing the threat that, for all john knew, could be out to kill his infant sons! what do you want him to do?? shrug it off and go on like nothing happened? cut his losses and get another mother for the boys?
as for how john specifically responded to this: he became a controlling douchebag, yeah. i have someone in my life who can be the same brand of peremptory dick as john, and there are times when i want nothing more than to punch john winchester in the face. it's one of the reasons i relate to sam so much. however, not once in my viewing of season 1 before i entered fandom spaces, did it occur to me that john might be an irredeemable monster and abuser. john trained his boys like soldiers rather than treating them like the children they were, but it's not like he did it for the hell of it. he thought they would literally die if they weren't prepared to fight off the supernatural threats which he was suddenly, in the worst possible way, made aware of. john was an ex-marine, which would of course influence how he would go about this. i'm not saying that john didn't do horrible things at times and that sam and dean's upbringing wasn't awful. he did, and it was. telling sam to not come back if he went to college, trying to punish him for having dreams of his own? making tween dean feel bad for not staying in a motel room 24/7 to take care of his younger brother? dick moves. the boys' childhood was claustrophobic, toxic, and miserable, and i do not blame either of them in the slightest for wanting to get out. however, it comes down to the matter of circumstance again: it's not like john did any of this for the hell of it! let me repeat myself: he thought. they were going. to be murdered. moving frequently probably wasn't just for the sake of cases, it might also have been because he was scared that they were being pursued by something.
as for some of the abuse claims that people make. ugh. please stop just making stuff up. if you want to take the idea that john was a monster and run with it, whatever. i don't care. but acting like that's actually canon? you're just shouldering your way into spaces where people who actually want to discuss canon can do so, and that's incredibly annoying. there is no canon evidence in the seasons which actually involved john as a character that he beat his children or was homophobic. they literally go out of their way in the episode 'Nightmare' to show that sam and dean know their childhood wasn't like max miller's. as some people have said, he doesn't need to have hit his kids for their childhood to have sucked; it was bad enough already! as for the homophobia claims. ughhhhhhhh. i feel like they come from a... specific sector of the fandom, who want to take any reprehensible trait of dean's and make it someone else's fault. like i said earlier, woobifying a character until they can do no wrong. "oh, dean can be a misogynistic and homophobic douchebag at times? clearly, this is all john's influence. oh, he treats sam badly at times? actually, sam is the one who abuses him!" i can somewhat get behind the idea of john expecting the boys to repress their emotions on some level; he was literally a marine in the vietnam war, and he raised his kids in the eighties and nineties. he expected them to put aside any issues they might have had about giving up an ordinary life and hunting azazel and just follow his orders. but the idea that he's some queerphobic monster who would beat dean upside the head for shedding a single tear is hilarious.
Tumblr media
look at this fucking fruit. he never stops tearing up.
as a final point, let me just address that jdm is incredibly sexy. if you have a problem with me liking john, take it up with whichever higher power or force of nature made him so <3
im gonna vent in your askbox i hope thats alright, but genuinely deangirls who are also hellers are so. delusional. like even if someone doesnt "ship" wincest like... incest is a theme of the show? like you cannot meaningfully do analysis of the wincest show without talking about wincest. and when hellers try to make every moment about destiel (even when it would be more apt to talk about wincest, like in the siren episode!!) it just. frustrates me so bad. i feel like samgirls + wincesties have a better understanding of the themes of the show (esp s1-5) like. genuinely.
ok to be frank, i wasn't originally gonna post this and just let it sit in my inbox/be deleted and you got your vent and etc. but i'm gonna use it to push back a little in places i'm frustrated with the wank in this fandom. i'm sorry that it's your ask, anon, that prompted this--i have nothing against you, and completely understand your frustration. however.
(btw, in good faith, i'm going to take your usage of "hellers" to be like extreme destiel-only shippers, not chill destiel shippers, as per the original meaning of the term. also note that everything i say here is based on my experience of the FIRST FIVE SEASONS, aka core spn.)
i agree that incest is a big theme of the show--or i should say, incest subtext. there is no actual incest between the show's main family (aka the winchesters) aside from mary's demon deal. is this due to the network? is this due to kripke's creative vision? we'll never know. it can't be ignored within a full analysis of the show, but to say that one can't have meaningful analysis of the show without discussing the incest subtext ignores the conversation that supernatural has with masculinity/gender, american folklore, race, class, etc--whether these conversations are done well or not. i'm not saying you are doing this, but there is a tendency of wincest shippers, as with destiel shippers, to focus solely on sam and dean's relationship, as if there is literally nothing else that matters in the show, which is just blatantly false and prevents people from having a fuller understanding of the show, just as wincest shippers claim to be frustrated about.
and the other thing is that yes, while i do feel that wincesties (using this broadly to also encompass the entire winchester family) have a better understanding of the show than those who don't engage with the incest subtext, i don't actually think that samgirls or deangirls better understand the show over one another. i know i jokingly make posts about this, but it's mainly out of frustration with the dean-centric hellscape that is what the spn fandom is. the true fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter who your favorite character is, it just matters the way in which you understand their motivations and engage with that. i'm sometimes critical of dean because i love him, but i think a lot of the stuff he does gets glossed over by both the fandom and the show, while sam does enough self-bashing on top of the bashing canon already gives him, resulting in a fandom who, when combined with ignoring him in favor of destiel, doesn't choose to engage with the text critically and question why the narrative repeatedly slams sam but praises dean, when they both are complicated people. but i don't think that means you have to necessarily be a samgirl to fully understand the text. especially if you're ignoring dean's plights and positioning of victimhood/survivorship (as sam is too) because he's just not your favorite character. imo it makes someone just as short-sighted.
Episode Seven: Hook Man
Dean Winchester in the Supernatural episode Hook Man
I was racking my brain trying to remember this episode as it began. The synopsis I read didn't ring any bells and the opening seemed completely unrecognizable to me. I guess after watching 300+ episodes multiple times you're bound to forget one or two.
So I was a little excited to get into this one and see what I forgot.
Sam and Dean investigate murders seemingly committed by the Hook Man of urban legend.
Another episode where we see Dean on the laptop looking for jobs. Sam is worrying that they can't find John and that there has been no sign of him at hospitals or morgues. (Weird thing to be worried about, Sam, but okay.)
Dean has a revelation that they both end up forgetting about before the season is over:
"I don't think Dad wants to be found." Dean is seemingly (and oddly) okay with this.
So the first dude the Hook Man kills is a frat boy which means Dean and Sam get to pretend to be frat boys to infiltrate the kid's inner circle. More of Dean as a frat boy would have been fun but, yeah, I get it, this is about Sam's journey this week.
Sam can relate to the girl whose date got killed (you know, because his girlfriend is dead. Did you know Sam's girlfriend is dead?) except Sam is a lot more broken up about Jess than this one is about her dead boyfriend.
When Sam tells Dean he believes the girl's story, we get a line from Dean because the writers want to bang it over our heads that Dean is a womanizer.
"I think she's hot too."
This is me rolling my eyes.
Daen does a lot of research in this one.
So FINALLY I start to remember this episode when the actor whose name I missed at the beginning of the episode shows up: Dan Butler. The minute I saw him I yelled "Bulldog!" and then remembered what the outcome of the episode was. Yeah pop culture clues!
Interesting note about canon/lore/whatever we're calling it. Up until now, Sam was not aware of using rock salt packed shells to shoot at spirits to slow them down. So sometime after Sam went to college John and/or Dean figured this out?
Oh, it was Dean. Who gets another great dig in at his brother when Sam, impressed with the rock salt shells, asks, "You and Dad think of this?" and Dean replies:
"I told you, you don't have to be a college graduate to be a genius.'
You fucking go, Dean.
So Sam gets arrested (man I hope no one is reading this for a true summary of the episode) and Dean gets him out by telling the sheriff they were in a frat and Sam was being hazed.
Dean to the fucking rescue again - and using his big brain too.
Two co-eds walk by Sam and Dean at one point, prompting Dean to exclaim, "Dude, sorority girls! Think we'll see a naked pillow fight?"
Because of course someone wrote that line for Dean.
Weird little thing that happens in this ep that never gets mentioned even as Dean takes it off the windshield, the Impala gets a parking ticket. Now there's no way Dean ever pays a parking ticket and they keep the same license plate for years so I guess the whole thing about Chuck watching out for them really did start in season one, huh?
They hit a frat party that Dean actually (begrudgingly but voluntarily) leaves to go to the cemetery and look for the unmarked grave of the Hook Man while Sam goes and stares at Dan Butler's house waiting for the daughter to do something unhinged.
This is the first episode where a body gets salted and burned. (They've tried in other eps but this is the first one when it gets done.) Dean uses matches. I'm sure it's noted in some wiki when they start using the Zippo but I'll wait.
Also, Dean digs the grave alone, prompting him to say, "Next time I get to watch the cute girl's house." (And in this case, the line is perfect.)
Sam gets to kiss a girl who isn't Jess! But it's only because she's so fucked up about all the death stuff...and it doesn't matter because he's not feeling it because of the whole dead girlfriend thing.
So the girl is the one inadvertently sending the Hook Man/Violent Spirt dude to kill people who are doing wrong...it's a little whackadoo as far as reason go but we're going with it because it's Supernatural.
When the Hook Man comes to get the dad (for having an affair with a married woman) Sam and Dean figure out just burning the bones didn't help and we learn that no one thought to get rid of the hook...you know, the thing doing the killing. Yada yada yada, Dean comes up with the idea to check the church records to see if the church had it...it did and they melted it down to the chain Sam's new girlfriend (joking!) is wearing.
But first Dean gets to save Sam's ass by shooting the spirit when it is about to attack him...then Dean burns the chain.
Let's be honest, Dean does most of the work in this episode.
At the end of the episode, Dean is in the Impala waiting for Sam to day goodbye to the girl (whose name I have already forgotten). He's visibly disappointed that Sam makes no attempt to SAY goodbye if you get what I'm saying.
Once Sam gets into the car, Dean offers to stay - presumably so Sam can get some (although in fairness, I think Dean really does think Sam made a connection and is running from it) - but emo Sam is back and all he does is shake his head sadly...which is what Dean does too before they drive away.
Some notes for posterity:
The significant music from this episode comes from Quiet Riot: Metal Health and Boston: Peace of Mind
The brothers pose as fraternity brothers from Ohio transferring to the school in Iowa. They use their real first names when introducing themselves to everyone.
This is the first episode in which Sam gets arrested
Movie References: Sam mentions The Invisible Man, Dean calls Sam "Dr. Venkman" (from Ghostbusters), the naked pillow fight comment is most likely a nod to Animal House, and Dean gets a TV reference in as well by calling himself Matlock because he talked down the sheriff.
This hunt takes place in Ankeny, Iowa.
Dean wears John's jacket but not through the entire episode.
Recognizable Guest Stars in this episode: Dan Butler
