//yume ask game I saw except no one is asking and I'm just answering xD!! I wont answer all because too much and I'm lazy
Feat. JinSeul (Should I make one with Delilah and Aventurine? Yes I have a honkai yume)
Who would end a heated argument by defending their actions with ‘because I love you!’ ?
No doubt it's Jinwoo dopfjkger. Seul-ae is very scared of fighting so when they argue she's quiet after speaking her mind for 2 sentences. Otherwise, it's Jinwoo since he's more vocal in their relationship
What would they do if the other woke in a manic state after a nightmare?
Seul-ae doesn't go manic when she has nightmares surprisingly. If she has them she'll just go "Oh. That happened" Jinwoo meanwhile is more prone to nightmares. On those evenings, Seul-ae will coddle him or she suggests midnight snacking and movies ^^
Do they wear the other’s clothes? (sweatshirt, bandana, necklace, etc.)
Seul-ae is a known hoodie thief heheh~ Well, in her defense Jinwoo leaves his hoodie on display all the time mind as well!
Which one is more protective? Who needs to be ‘protected’
I think neither of them need protection from everything but themselves. Jinwoo is self-sacrificial, Seul-ae has destructive habits that includes scratching herself to the point of wounds. She has a bad habit of digging her skin too. But in hunter situations, Jinwoo is always hovering near her or he drives away the danger.
Describe their cozy night in.
Quiet chitchats of Jinwoo listening to Seul-ae yapping><!! She'd either be drawing, painting or playing the kalimba while she tells him all the stuff she watched from the afternoon he is gone.
Who would beg the other not to leave? Who has to leave to protect the other?
Seul-ae. She will sob and Jinwoo would feel weak but he has a job to do. He'll do anything for her because he knows she would do to him too. But in the end, Jinwoo will come back<3
Would they build a pillow fort together just because?
THEY WOULD!! Seul-ae is wildly impulsive and do random things like flipping the furniture over or random bouts of energy so he's used to her being extra hyper and will entertain her whims. He enjoys the fort making with her since Seul-ae notoriously sleeps with 10+ pillows and xx numbers of bunny plushies.
What happens if one of them gets sick?
Seul-ae is notoriously sickly because of her chronic allergies and asthma. If it's bearable levels of sickness Jinwoo wouldn't use potions to heal her because he wants her to be reliant on him<33
What are their thoughts on having children?
They'll make babies once they're both ready:D! For now, they pretty much prioritise living in the moment and seeing different places.
Describe their first date.
An aquarium date<33. Seul-ae's core memories include jellyfishes so she suggested he come with her. It's actually her quiet way of saying she likes him by showing him where her most precious meories are formed.
Do either try to hide their emotions if upset? Can the other still tell?
They both do<33!! At first it was trouble but both learned how to feel the other out and Jinwoo started encouraging the act of telling him what she feels and he also does the same so they can be on the same level!
Do they have many heated arguments? How do they smooth things over?
Nope<3, Seul-ae is very scared of fights. If Jinwoo looks even remotely upset she'll start crying. She's just very sensitive and has no backbone and arguing with someone just gives her traumatic flashbacks and she just shuts down. So often Jinwoo is careful and firm on telling he's not upset and he just wants to talk.
Who’s the bigger tease?
Jinwoo, he's a bastard. And she calls him all sorts of swear names<33
Do they always say ‘i love you’ before leaving?
YEAH:DD, Seul-ae is always beaming whenever she does it.
How likely are they to have fur babies? How many and what kind?
SEUL-AE IS A BIG KITTY AND BUNNY PERSON!! She will have a ragdoll kitty and a himalayan colored bunbun
How do they feel about PDA?
Seul-ae is extremely bashful so the most she does is just grab his sleeve xD! Jinwoo doesn't really care about pda and lets her touch him the way she wants
Choose one song that perfectly describes their relationship.
Moonstruck. Jinwoo to Seul-ae is her salvation and reason to live in bliss instead of succumbing to her loneliness and pessimism. And Seul-ae to Jinwoo is his paradise because with her he can forget about everything and see everything in rose-colored lenses
Who would get into a fight to defend the other’s honor? Who tends to the other’s wounds?
Although both will throw hands, Seul-ae is actually more prone to bashing heads in. She is notorious for slamming the end of her gun on other hunters if they slander Jinwoo or she would just outright punch their faces. She doesn't care if it's an S-ranker too, she will punch even if the hunter is as big as Thomas Andre. So as a result, Jinwoo often has to pull her away and tend to her while scolding her xD,,,,
Who’s more artistic?
Seul-ae :3, if it weren't for the hunter thing— She would be an established artist
Who would give their life for the other without a second thought?
Both.
What’s a non verbal way they say I love you?
Seul-ae would paint/sketch him. And Jinwoo would remember everything she tells him to heart
Who’s more likely to carry the other to bed?
Jinwoo :D!
Do they like watching clouds or star gazing?
Yes^^!!! Seul-ae childhood involves a lot of watching star documentaries, so she loves going out at night to admire the night sky
Whose the serious one when grocery shopping and who likes to toss random things in the cart?
Jinwoo is more serious and Seul-ae is shoving whatever snack and chocolate they see
Who pulls the other closer when they’re sleeping?
Both:D!! But mostly Jinwoo!!

【Magi】 JuAli Wearing Hanfu: Rambles 🖤❤️💛
Mainly JuAli rambles, but some XanLena rambles too, since in chats, I often bring up my fave ships together. Like this convo started off as "This is what I HC my fave ships' earrings and accessories to be"
JuAli is my Magi ship and XanLena is my KHR AU ship (Yume, Canon x OC) 💗💘💞
I was thinking I need to post more of my Magi ramble posts here, but I haven't cleaned them up yet, so here you go! I think I posted the gist of these rambles already on main before? But I'll post my new additions too.
Judar wears hanfu and hanfu earrings in my HC design. I imagined that he would wear gold and red hanfu earrings, and also snowflake/icicle ones! Silver snowflake ones, and glass icicle earrings would be cool... I also want him to have Snowflake, Moon, and Ice Dragon patterns on his hanfu... ❄️🐉🌙
I'm posting this here on side, cuz I haven't updated these arts yet.
Posting this at night but I was just thinking about them earlier this morning and yesterday too. I MISS YOU JUALI… I NEED TO DRAW YOU AGAIN SOON…
I miss drawing JuAli, I wanna draw and write for them again… Also cuz I eventually need refs for my HC designs of them so I can eventually commission them in it <3
I have been thinking of matching couple hanfu for them. Judar in black and red hanfu, and Alibaba in white and gold hanfu.
I've been slowly revamping my old dialogue scripts (writing ideas) of them too. I'll post them when I finish refining them ^^
I think I have some ideas to refine my Judar doodles one. The hanfu ref sheet and the Unfriendly Hater by Meddmia Vocaloid Song crossover parody WIPs are my fave doodles of him :)
Which makes sense since they're also the most recent! I've been meaning to redraw the hair and clothes on these…
Cuz god I love how I drew the eyes on these 🥰
...
My CUTE AMAZING black cat x golden retriever ship... Wahhh... 🐈⬛🐕
I want Alibaba to wear traditional Arabic clothes (white and yellow). I've been looking into it for now, but I wanna draw it soon... I also HC Alibaba to have tanner skin in my HC design
Me: I drew tentative rain drop earrings for now. I was thinking about it but considering Judar is ice magic themed… It'd be cool if he had crystal snowflake and icicle drop shaped earrings too. Judar is an ice magic/lightning magic main. Glass icicle earrings... So I think I may wanna put snowflake/ice and dragon patterns on his hanfu. The silhouette of a Chinese dragon would be rad ❄️🐉
JuAli are Sun/Moon and Fire/Ice themed, so I wanna include their leitmotifs as apart of my headcanon (HC) designs for them… ☀️🌙🔥❄️
Judar wearing black and red hanfu with either snowflake/icicle drop earrings or gold and red hanfu earrings with a Chinese ice dragon pattern and snowflake/icicle patterns on his hanfu. Possibly a moon motif… We'll see. 🐉❄️
Judar and Alibaba wearing hanfu… Perhaps inspired by these… I may need to add more gold onto the 2nd one, though.
White -> gold -> black gradient hanfu with (possibly) sun and flame patterns could be cool! ☀️🔥
I have trouble making light colours stand out on its own without contrast, hence white + gold + black hanfu could be a great solution. But I'll have to think about it, since I want them to match and for their hanfu to be direct opposites of each other for visual/colour contrast reasons
I want to include their motifs on their hanfu, though I also wanna make sure the design doesn't feel too cluttered 👍
C: Valid of you. Gl with that 🥺
Me: Yee thanks! I've been thinking of partially redrawing old doodles too 👍
C: Oooh pretty hanfu!! Nodding
C: Yaaay earrings! Good choices
Judar: Black Sun, Moon and Eclipse Symbolism and the Sun-Eating Dragon 🐉☀️🌙
I've been thinking that I really want to commission arts of JuAli sometime...
I haven't talked about it on my side, but I was thinking of commissioning arts of JuAli and XanLena.
Mire's art style is so gorgeous that I was thinking that I would be ESCTATIC to see JuAli and XanLena in this style, if possible...
As an example, I commissioned Mire to draw my KagePro ship KuroEne here: (X)
It doesn't have to be right away, since I still need to get my HC ref sheets in order first, but I've been brainstorming ideas for JuAli in this exact commission format... Since I want to commission arts of them with my HCs.
Because of course, I need to get my ref sheets in order and decide the details and design elements first. I have their flowers decided (red hydrangea and sunflowers), I just need to decide on the quotes and text and BG elements...
The rambles I have of coming up with ideas aren't ready to post yet since I still have to clean it up.
The summary of these rambles would be:
Since Judar is themed with the Black Sun and Moon, this also makes him Eclipse themed.
My friends Cinna and Jaqui were the ones that brought this up to me
And then when I thought about it, I thought about JuAli as: Black Sun x Sun, Moon x Sun, Eclipse x Sun
Therefore, to me, JuAli is "The Moon (Judar) Eating the Sun (Alibaba)"
I think I'm planning to have "The Moon Eating the Sun" as the tag line... Like I just think it's so perfect for them...
The moon eating the sun... Just like an eclipse :)
Since Judar is CN inspired, I thought about how I would LOVE to have the theme of "An ice dragon devouring the Sun" as a reference to Chinese Eclipse mythologies where it was believed that a Dragon would eat the Sun during a Solar Eclipse.
"Moon/Dragon eating the Sun" works really well for AliHaku too considering their Sun/Moon symbolism as well, but I think it also works really well for JuAli too :)
Considering Judar summons Seeker Ice Dragons in the Judar vs. Aladdin fight in the Kou Empire arc...
JuAli's Fire/Ice duality is very inchresting to think about with this~
Ice Dragon and Sun (Fire)
Judar's Seeker Ice Dragons
(Magi: Kou Empire arc - Ch. 255 Spoilers)
I was rereading the Judar vs. Aladdin fight in the Kou Empire arc and I love how dynamic Ohtaka's art is. I'm in love with the compositions.
Judar's ice dragons and the the last page with Judar being themed with the moon!!! That's so cool!
Judar’s leitmotif is the Black Sun and Moon ☀️🌙
Her art always looks gorgeous, but the last page goes so hard omg...
C: Makes sense! Valid
Yea Ohtaka is brilliant with compositions, perspectives, inking, and dynamic art and expressions.
Judar Earrings HCs
My ideas for Judar's earrings. Something along the lines of these.
Earring ideas for Judar: Snowflake and icicle drop earrings, Gold and red jewel earrings, Ice Dragon earrings, Black Sun and Moon shaped earrings
I thought mainly of snowflake and icicle drop ones.
XanLena Earrings HCs
Me: XanLena doodle WIPs 💜❤️
Me: Gold and red earrings also suits Judar too, but I noticed there was a lot of overlap between my faves since they're all meow meow mfs.
I'll also put the XanLena rambles in its own post too eventually.
Earring ideas for Xanxus: Flame shaped gold and red jewel earrings, red tassel earrings, feather earrings
Earring ideas for Selena: Lotus/flower earrings, moon shaped earrings, purple tassel earrings
Me: Like I also imagined Judar to wear gold earrings with a red jewel in the middle. I also gave Xanxus gold and red earrings too. Though tbf they can all have different kinds and multiple types of earrings.
C: Honestly valid. Yeah there's sm earrings there's one for everyone. Like how my favs all have different types of chokers in my HCs lmao
Me: OOO yeah that's valid! I love chokers + belt fashion aesthetics. Basically, I’m a fan of goth + punk fashion aesthetics for my meow meow mf faves
C: Yeee. A lot of my favs have earrings too in my HCs and all of them differently
Me: I imagine that Xanxus while wearing Viet traditional clothes would have gold and red earrings. Gold earrings that are flamed shaped with a red jewel in the middle. I also imagined red tassel earrings with a gold clasp for him.
Xanxus was born with a rare flame called the Flame of Wrath. The special characteristic of this Flame is extreme destructive power that can reduce anything to ashes.
He’s one of the only KHR characters that can manifest a flame in his hands, without the need for rings/weapons, unlike the others.
C: Nodding. Ohh flame shaped is nice... Tassels are great too
Me: I imagined that for Xanxus, gold flame shaped earrings with thin gold ends would be cute...
C: Cute. Aa yes
C: Tassels are great too
Me: Yeah I think tassel earrings and feather earrings (metal shaped feather earrings) also suit Xanxus
C: Nodding. Oh yeah feathers work too
#magi#magi: the labyrinth of magic#juali#judar x alibaba#aliju#judali#judar#alibaba saluja#judal#judar magi#alibaba magi#khr#katekyo hitman reborn#xanxus#xanlena#xanxus x selena#nguyen selena#nguyen nguyet van lien#khr oc#khr au#judal magi#Mainly JuAli rambles with some XanLena. I was unsure whether to put XanLena too but they were also mentioned in the earrings convo#So I'll also put XanLena's rambles in a separate post eventually too. I also wanna come up with ideas for their thematics/symbolisms#I feel like I big brained hard with Judar's black sun/moon/eclipse symbolism. The Moon Eating the Sun.#And tying JuAli's thematics/leitmotifs/symbolisms to CN eclipse mythologies. The Sun-Eating Dragon. It's seriously so delicious... RAHHH#Ty Cinna and Jaqui you seriously enable me

Hello! I'm a sucker and a half for matchups, so I thought I'd yeet a request over if it's cool with you 😅
I would like a romantic Obey Me matchup request
Appearance-wise I am a 165 cm tall, average build, Bangladeshi woman (She/her and they/them pronouns please). I have wavy black hair that just reaches below my shoulders and I usually dress in South Asian attire, usually salwar-kameez plus a hijab. I also wear glasses. I don't really feel comfortable going out without them 😅
My MBTI and enneagram: INTJ 5w4
Star sign: Sagittarius sun, Virgo moon and rising
Sexuality: demiromantic asexual (demisexual?)
Personality traits: Calm, collected, polite, quiet, shy (but that can easily be mistaken for being brooding or done with everyone's shit (they aren't entirely wrong about the latter)) (someone told me I radiate black cat energy), not very facially expressive (I'm the most emotional emotionless person I know. I do feel things more deeply than people give me credit for), a good listener, hardworking (I often bite off more than I can chew and end up burnt out), intelligent (especially with numbers),
Hobbies: Making art, reading, writing, animating (I'm relatively new to animation. I don't know what I'm doing most of the time, but I'm still having fun), basically anything creative. I especially like to draw and paint things that radiate a sense of comfort, nostalgia, and serenity. Someone also told me that my artworks also hold a sort of innocence in the composition of the shapes, colours, and overall vibe of what I draw/paint. I also make jewelry from time to time
Likes: Classical music, lofi hip-hop, indie rpgs (Yume Nikki and Off have me in a chokehold, though not as tight as Obey Me, Court of Darkness, and Twisted Wonderland), tea, creative outlets
Dislikes: Cruelty, anyone who would dare to threaten my family or friends, loud noises, red meat (The texture is too much for me to handle), bright lights
What qualities do you look for in a partner? It may not look like it on the surface, but I'm a huge softie, I'd like anyone who I can feel safe talking to. They don't need to be perfect, I just need them to put effort into helping me with my emotional needs. I already do that a lot with others, so I'd like it if they turn the tables on me. I also would not tolerate it if my partner belittles me or if they're just mean or rude for no apparent reason.
My love languages include making art for them and spending quality time
How do you want to receive affection? As I stated before, I would like them to put effort into helping me with my emotional needs. I already do that a lot with others, so I'd like it if they turn the tables on me. I would also like physical touch and words of affirmation, but I can't guarantee I'll know how to react to that at first 🥲. It's gonna take some time for me to get used to it
After a long time of thinking 💭 your match is...
Satan
How it started:
In the dimly lit library of the Devildom, a hush settled over the rows of dusty tomes, broken only by the soft rustling of pages. Satan, the avatar of wrath, sat at his favorite corner table, engrossed in a thick, leather-bound book. His usual cynical expression softened as he delved deeper into the words on the pages.
Unbeknownst to him, you, the calm and collected human exchange student, silently entered the library. You had often frequented this sanctuary of knowledge, and your quiet demeanor didn't escape Satan's keen senses. He glanced up from his book, momentarily captivated by your presence.
As you meticulously selected a book from the shelf and settled at a nearby table, Satan couldn't help but watch you with a sense of fascination. Your intelligence was evident, your brow furrowing in concentration as you immersed yourself in the text. It was refreshing, a reprieve from the usual chaos of the Devildom. Days turned into weeks, and your presence in the library became a routine. You'd exchange polite nods, occasionally sharing a brief conversation about literature or art. Satan was drawn to your serenity, your ability to remain composed even in this chaotic realm.
One evening, as the library bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, you stumbled upon a rare and ancient text. Excitement sparkled in your intelligent eyes as you pored over its pages. It was then that Satan found himself unable to resist approaching you.
"Interesting choice," he remarked, his voice surprisingly gentle.
You looked up, your expression as unreadable as ever. "Yes, it's quite captivating."
And so, in the quiet corners of the library, a connection began to form. Satan's cynical exterior slowly melted away as he found himself discussing books, art, and life with you. He admired your hardworking nature, your ability to find solace in creativity, and your deep empathy for others.
Over time, Satan's anger and cynicism were overshadowed by a newfound warmth, a gentle affection he couldn't deny. He found himself not just captivated by your intelligence but drawn to your kindness and the comfort you brought to his tumultuous existence. In the end, it wasn't a fiery confrontation or grand gesture that won Satan's heart. It was the quiet, genuine connection that grew between you in the library—a love story born amidst the pages of ancient tomes and the serenity of a shared passion for knowledge and art.
General headcanons:
💘You're a great listener, and Satan, with his cynical outlook on life, often finds comfort in confiding in you.
💘You both find solace in creativity. While Satan may not be as artistically inclined as you, he admires your talent and enjoys watching you work on your art projects.
💘You two bond over a shared love for tea, you often find yourselves trying out different blends and discussing their flavors.
💘Despite Satan's cynicism, your presence brings out a more innocent and light-hearted side of him.
I'd appreciate it if you'd reblog this, and I hope you enjoyed reading it <3

Yup yup! You got yours in on time no worries!
"I was hoping you would come ask for a matchup! You're always here supporting my events, so I'm very happy to see you again! Of course, I'm delighted to give you a matchup!
I think the perfect match for you, is Heartslabyul's own Trey!"
He's probably the most emotionally mature student at NRC
in terms of personality, you two are very similar and get along very well except for the way you two appear
peaceful smile boi with black cat energy you
he knows that despite how inexpressive you might be, you do feel things deeply and he's always there even when it's not very obvious that something affected you
he loves your drawing and paintings
if you allow him, he'd have some of your paintings hung up on the walls of his room
Trey is probably the safest person to talk to, and would never judge you or be mean to you in any way
he's so supportive and cares about you so much, and would hate if anyone mistreated you
honestly your entire relationship is so soft and adorable
you two are like couple goals because it's so cute and people can tell you two truly genuinely love each other so much

Hello! I saw that matchups were open and thought I'd send in a romantic request for Twisted Wonderland. No first-years pls
Appearance-wise I am a 165 cm tall, average build, Bangladeshi woman (She/her but also cool with they/them). I have wavy black hair that just reaches below my shoulders and I usually dress in South Asian attire, usually salwar-kameez plus a hijab. I also wear glasses. I don't really feel comfortable going out without them 😅
My MBTI and enneagram: INTJ 5w4
Star sign: Sagittarius sun, Virgo moon and rising (I act more like a Virgo, allegedly)
Sexuality: demiromantic asexual (demisexual?)
Personality traits: Calm, collected, polite, quiet, shy (but that can easily be mistaken for being aloof or done with everyone's shit (they aren't entirely wrong about the latter) (someone told me I radiate black cat energy), not very facially expressive (I'm the most emotional emotionless person I know. I do feel things more deeply than people give me credit for), a good listener, hardworking (I often bite off more than I can chew and end up burnt out), intelligent (especially with numbers. RIP impostor syndrome + gifted kid burnout syndrome. As much as I love my major, electrical engineering is kicking my ass). I am also the oldest of three sisters, so I'm good at handling kids (I'm also expected to be the perfect daughter, so... yea). Someone also told me I'm wise, but all that wisdom came from all the books I read + watching Avatar: The Last Airbender lmao. The same person also said my presence was therapeutic (paraphrasing, of course. Also, this is alleged)
Hobbies: Making art, making jewelry, reading, writing, animating (I'm relatively new to animation. I don't know what I'm doing most of the time, but I'm still having fun), basically anything creative. I especially like to draw and paint things that radiate a sense of comfort, nostalgia, and serenity. Likes: Classical music, lofi hip-hop, indie rpgs (Yume Nikki and Off have me in a chokehold, though not as tight as Obey Me, Court of Darkness, and Twisted Wonderland), tea, creative outlets. I also like to learn psychology
Dislikes: Cruelty, anyone who would dare to threaten my family or friends, loud noises, red meat (The texture is too much for me to handle), bright lights. I also dislike strong smelling things and being in crowded, noisy and bright environments for prolonged periods of time
What qualities do you look for in a partner? It may not look like it on the surface, but I'm a huge softie, I'd like anyone who I can feel safe talking to. They don't need to be perfect, I just need them to put effort into helping me with my emotional needs. I already do that a lot with others, so I'd like it if they turn the tables on me. I hope this is enough information. Thanks in advance if you choose to write this
I match anon with...
🍩 Ruggie Bucchi 🍩
-:-:-:-
Now, this may seem like an unlikely match, but hear me out.
Ruggie is known to be a caregiver back in his community. He knows how to look after his own.
It may take some time to earn his trust, as he sees kind gestures as 'favors' that he is expected to repay. Show him that the gestures are genuine, without need for compensation, and with time, he'll warm up to you... eventually.
When in a relationship, any gift or piece of art given to him would be treasured. He'd be all aloof when recieving it, but I'll bet that if you ever visit his dorm you'll find each gift displayed or in some special box.
He's a good listener, feel free to rant to him. Can't promise that he won't find the source of your troubles and 'mildly' inconvenience them though.
A fellow hardworker! Well, Ruggie's a bit of a lazy hardworker, but he'll go pretty far for some food and coin. He'll help you out, but he'll expect something in return... a scratch behind the ears, maybe?
A real sweetie once you get close.
Street-smart, and intelligent, but he'll need your wisdom and your calm, collected energy to make sure he doesn't get in too much trouble.
Other options: Trey and Malleus.

Hello! I saw that matchups were open and thought I'd yeet over a request for Obey Me
Appearance-wise I am a 165 cm tall, average build, Bangladeshi woman (She/her and they/them pronouns please).
It's gonna take some time for me to get used to it
Hi Anon! Thank you for your request! Sorry it took a while. I hope you like your matchup!
In Obey Me, I match you with...
Your calm, collected nature and Mammon’s chaotic energy contrast each other perfectly. Lucifer’s hoping you rub off on Mammon and make him more responsible (and not the other way around).
You’re both super protective of your family and close friends and Mammon values that a lot. He knows he would do anything to protect you but knowing that, despite you being just a human, you would do the same for him? That means more than he can ever say.
Speaking of, you’ll always feel safe with Mammon. He’s your first after all and he’ll do whatever he needs to to protect you.
Displays of affection will embarrass him at first, whether he’s on the receiving end or the giving end. But give him some time, he’ll open up to it a bit more (he still gets embarrassed though).
He loves receiving art from you. Just knowing you’ve put time and effort into sometime especially for him touches his heart. He’s hanging it up in his room and promising you he will never ever sell it.
Please also make jewellery for him! He loves jewellery so having some that you’ve made for him is great! He’s never taking it off, no matter if it clashes with his outfit.

Yandere Life Ship
Can I have a yandere life ship plz? ^^~ ok so! I’m really awkward, shy, and introverted! I’m open and accepting to everything! I cant be around people who aren’t 😅 I like time to myself and I have social anxiety but! When I’m close to someone I literally give my everything its all or nothing with me. I’m kind of clingy. I’m quick to cry and be manipulated. But once you piss me off all that goes away lmao I can be really smart mouthed and say cruel shit in the blink of an eye Part 1/3
and not care for the persons feelings at all. And with that being said it doesn’t take much to piss me off lol and I can’t be silenced like... at all unless you’ve completely broken me but even then I’ll probably still try you... if you try to silence me before breaking me then you’re in for me mouthing off at you and I’m brat for a reason you know lol Part 2/3
I love music, alternative(Lolita,yume/yami kawaii,e-girl,kawaii,etc. /mainstream fashion(“baddie” fashion) my fashion depends on how I feel, I have A L O T of kinks so I wouldn’t do well with someone vanilla 💀 I’m not sure if that’s enough but here it is! Part 3/3 -MILLI
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yandere 1: (Main yandere)- Jay Park
Jay is a top dog when it comes to yanderes, he doesn’t mess around and what he wants, he gets no matter what. No one knows exactly how or when Jay became infatuated with you but you do quickly find out why; he likes someone who can put up a fight whether it be verbally or physically and you can do exactly that. This yandere makes it evident from the get go that he’ll let you yell and talk, hell, he’ll even let you punch him and try to knock him down all the while smiling at your futile attempts but, in the end, you’ll always learn your place after he’s put you through what he deems as a “reward” for your attitude. Your life with him is going to be interesting because he’s going to do every to brake you down into becoming a submissive victim but, unlike other yanderes and their victims, he’s also going to simultaneously mold you into a powerful “sidekick” that everyone will love and fear just as much as they love and fear him once he’s deemed you well-behaved enough to go public with him.
your friend that is victimized by yandere one: Mint
Mint is a supportive friend who is quick to dry those tears when you come to her in an upset state of mind. She doesn’t fool around when it comes to her friends feelings which means that if she learns that someone is hurting you in any way then she’ll doing everything in her power to bring that to an end. She may not be able to do much but she knows that sometimes all a person needs to feel better is some time out with friends or some time away from everyone, which she is more than willing to let you spend time at the extra house her parents bought for her. What drew you to together as such close friends was actually that facts that you two are nearly polar opposites from each other, she’s more outgoing and isn’t quick to start confrontation or talk back while you are, but you two did share commonality in being open with everything, loving the kawaii style of cutsey things, and with being emotional. Jay won’t like this one bit. He hates the thought of some tiny, 4′11 chick being an emotional support buddy who can clear your mind and has the resources to give you time away from him. Although she can’t do much else, he still hates her guts with every nerve in his body, just the sight of her or mention of her name can bring his blood to a raging boil. Although she isn’t much of a threat, except when she sends you away for some private time in her other house, Jay quickly writes her off as someone who needs to vanish from your life and he can think of many different ways to make that happen but his two favorite options are that he can either snap her like a twig and hide her body somewhere or he can have his shady friends take her and do with her what they please. Either way, Mint with disappear at some point and the likelihood that anyone, especially you, will ever see her again alive is less of a chance than a snowball has at surviving a trip through hell.
where they’d keep you: the studio
Jay is constantly working on new music whether it be for himself or for other artists so the best place to keep you is where he spends his time most often. Jay loves this option not just because he’s around you often but because this gives him a chance to have more ‘lively, productive’ breaks when he needs a break from pressing keys, strumming strings, recording or mixing. It’s also a good place to keep you because it limits the space you have when trying to be away from him and you have no option but to beg him to get you food or water or to let you out whenever you need to use the restroom.
your chances of survival/escape: survival: 5/10, escape: 2/10
Jay may enjoy that fiery passion that you have to not be controlled/manipulated or abused but he does have a point in time where he’ll get tired of it and, if you don’t brake and bow down to him at some point, then he will consider killing you eventually. Jay isn’t afraid to use his strength to get what he wants from you so you’ll not only deal with him mentally destroying you piece by piece but also doing that with you physically as well. The best thing you can do to survive with this yandere is by swallowing your pride from time to time (at the very least) if not completely and letting him say and do to you what he pleases without any interruptions from you. By doing so you’ll ensure less punishments, which are both immensely emotionally and physically straining to your body and mind.
As for escape, he may keep you in a small studio so it would seem as though it should be relatively easy for you to get away from him but what you’ll fail to realize until you make any attempts is that smaller spaces severally limit your sources of hiding or dodging his advances towards you when he arrives to check up on you and/or work. It’s also hard to escape the studio because you only have one means of escape, which is through the single door that he enters which is kept locked with many different dead bolts and locks.
Yandere 2: (yandere that wants to steal you from yandere 1)- Haechan
Haechan actually gets to know you before Jay even knows of your existence because he knows you through his connection to Mint. Just as you are close friends to Mint, you easily become close friends with the boy who shares common ground with you when it comes to mouthing off. The both of you enjoy having competitions to see who can be the most sassy and, sometimes you both reach the point where you actually hurt each others feeling because of what you say in an attempt to one-up each other during the playful fights. You both end up forgiving each other by giving one another backhanded compliments then move on to conversations about fashion, even though his sense is far different than yours. Haechan is a clingy person so to have someone who can be equally so once they’re comfortable around him will be something that he enjoys whenever he gets to hang out with you.
When you go missing after Jay takes you, Haechan will be distraught and will use his detective stalking abilities to try to find you and bring you back to safety. He knows that you’re not the type of person to just up and leave without saying something first so he knows immediately that someone else is involved and he’ll go through the list of people that you know well or only met even just once to try and find you. If Haechan ever finds you after being taken by Jay then expect him to be 20000000000000000000x more clingy and obsessive with you. You’ll quickly learn that you may no longer be with Jay (if Haechan is successful at helping you escape, which isn’t a likely case) but you’ve landed in the hands of yet another yandere, one who used to be (and apparently still is) your friend.
why yandere 1 & 2 fell for you:
What draws these two men to you is your ability to switch from a quiet, shy introverted girl to a smart mouthed, tough girl within a blink of an eye who also has the ability to not back down easily. Jay , especially, loves brats! so he sees braking you as a challenge that he is faaaaar too willing to take on, and to say that he’ll love every moment of braking you and molding you into the badass, “ride or die” but submissive victim that he wants is an understatement. He loves seeing you cry but he loves that fire in your eyes and the silver tongue that you use when you step up to fight back against his abusive advances. For both of these yanderes, the more you talk back, the more excited they become for the punishments they will dish out to you once they’ve had enough of letting you speak your mind before taking back the control and getting the final word in.
Oh, another thing that they enjoy, (again, especially Jay) is the sex life that you two will have. Jay is a very adventurous, kinky, thirsty man so knowing that he’s got a victim who has claimed that they aren’t up for that vanilla shit (whether they’ve taken that back or not since becoming his ‘puppet’) will definitely send his non-vanilla sex drive overboard. He’ll enjoy putting you in positions that you’ve never even heard of, he’ll enjoy seeing just how kinky you can be and how far he can push you overboard with his endless sex-capades.
~Savie

Every single one
Good morning, Robin! (Good morning at 3 in the morning)
Here we go! Thanks for sending a birdie some questions
Favorite characters?
Answered! I will always love Ryouta and Kazuaki, and Nageki!
Least favorite characters?
I don't have one really, but just only Sakuya's racism is so intolerable, but I still like him as a character overall!
Favorite route?
My favorite route would always be Shuu's because there is a lot of interpretations you can do with his and also like Ryouta's and Nageki's because they really hit hard! Though overall the best route is BBL since you get to learn more about the story!
Favorite human design?
Answered! Anghel's and Ryuuji's hands down are my favorite human designs!
What’s a part that sticks out to you the most?
"Quails are still learning to adapt to social life." and also, Yuuya caring about Sakuya all the time, it's really cute
What did you think of the new birdies in Holiday Star?
I loved Albert and seeing Tohri some more is great and funny, he's a great birdie. I loved Miru and Kaku they are super wholesome little white marshmallow gumdrops!
What was your first reaction to the Bad Boys Love route?
My first reaction when I played it in 2012 was I sobbed, I was in suspense, I was in surprised, and everything and it made me fall deeper than I was before with Hatoful, it's such a nice route that I wish there was so much more to it and would say that I loved the changed in textbox color that I wish we gotten it for Holistar!
How long did it take you to unlock the ‘hidden routes’ and ‘secret’ endings? What was your reaction to them?
Not to long, I was extremely curious about trying to get any option I can available especially the hidden routes and even the easy to miss conversations, I was so eager to get everything complete! I was extremely surprised with some and it was extremely enjoyable and didn't feel like a drag like I would feel for most other games like these.
Do you like to draw certain birdies a lot?
Answered! I used to draw a lot of Yuuya and Shuu, and Nageki art, I still do to this day! But now I draw a lot of Ryuuji and Quail boyfriends as well.
What are some of your favorite ships?
I really like a lot of ships, especially quail boyfriends and HitoriNageki and even Ryuuji Isa just the relationship in general I think is cute, I love plenty of other ships, like Sakuya and Ryouta! I do also like Nageki with Anghel!
Least favorite ships?
I don't really have one in all honesty.
Do you own any of the Hatoful merch?
I own a Ryuuji plush with his charm and an isa charm with a Shuu one! I also own fanmade Nageki and Yuuya button! Some other merch I have which is a sticker I did for myself of Nanaki too, it's super old.
Do you write fanfiction for the birdies?
I used to, but they don't exist anymore since I deleted my tumblr from 2012, unfortunately! I just draw more so and make little drabbles.
Do you have any AUs you like to write about?
I would love to draw a few, especially since me and my wife talk about a lot of AUs together of the things we like. I think about drawing some zombie apoc or some metal gear ones since we've talked about that before! I do like to make some winter AU ones that are nice too and cute.
Rank birdies from tallest to shortest.
Nanaki / Hitori > Yuuya > Asami > Leone > Okosan > Shuu = Tohri > Ryouta > Kazuaki > Sakuya > Nageki > Anghel > Miru/Kaku
What are some of your gender and sexuality headcanons?
I headcanon a lot of them to be just bisexual and the ones I think would be not caring or just nonbinary is Anghel and Shuu, and Hitori and Kazuaki and as well as Nageki, but still use he/him! Sakuya and Shuu to me are male leaning at best, while I think Kazuaki + Hitori and Shuu are gay / male leaning, while Shuu is aspec.
How did you get into Hatoful?
I got into Hatoful while dabbling around Yume nikki that I just bumped into a blog back in 2012 talking about it and learned that it recently got a release! I do miss the egg buttons with the save and load, that was cute... I wish we had it again for the remake!
Have you made any friends in the Hatoful fandom?
In 2012, I made a few friends! I made a friend with a really nice person that was a little older than me that we met on an online drawing board called iscribble, I was really young and we would roleplay the birdies. I don't remember what had us lose contact if it was over time or what? I do see them around however! I remember I've been meaning to contact them for a commission. I wasn't friends but I knew someone who used to run a hatoful ask blog named puddington, they were pretty nice! I hope to make new friends this year since I am pretty open to that!
What are some of your favorite headcanons?
I like the idea that Shuu has sensitivity towards the sun, temperature, and especially like I say it's a projection of sorts since he gets pretty moody and likes to be in the shade often. I also think he might have tritanopia. My other headcanon that I think despite things being mildly clearing up for Nanaki, I think he is still will be ridden in guilt with what he's done regardless. And I like to think that both Shuu and Nanaki gained a relationship after BBL, while having somedays being pretty bad for them.
Anghel shares his home country's food with every birdie as form of "healing properties". I think that Sakuya wears heeled boots because he's short. Hehe!
What’s your favorite piece of canon trivia?
Despite everything, Hitori likes bitter sweets! Shuu gets sick from having his glasses removed (Big mood.), Kazuaki-kun doesn't like veggies!
What birdie do you wish had more to them?
I really wish to learn more about Kazuaki-kun, I just more about him even if we know why he doesn't! I just love him and interested about him a lot... I also wish there was more to Anghel as well than just sometimes feel like he's the hehe eccentric character, I just want to know his life besides his chuunibyou.
What are some songs you associate with characters?
Shuu/Isa to me feel strongly of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SgWum9kHYk Duvet - Boa
Nanaki is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE6pANWJGuU Imagination - Foster the People
Both Ryouta is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeRIAew8eXc Freaking out the Neighborhood - Mac DeMarco
Yuuya is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xtg-ntDZGk Come a Little closer - Cage the Elephant and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4qsjmLxhow The Adults are talking - The Strokes
Sakuya is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Z3iwpFQeg Leave me alone - IDKHTFM reminds me of him, I think it's his sharp tongue
If Okosan had a true human form, what do you think he would look like?
There's this really buff japanese guy on tiktok that wears an apron that I just saw as the embodiment of Okosan, I will draw him in his liking because he just LOOKS like it would be what Okosan would be!
If you could change one thing in the story, what would it be?
Sakuya. I am kidding, I know most of the things he learned and was taught was from his very highly racist and classist dad, but I wish he would not be so? Aggressive towards Anghel... i also wish for the Comedy to drop a bit less, but not drop it entirely because almost a lot of the times it's really perfect!
What’s your version of Hiyoko like?
I like Hiyoko to be messy hair brunette that sometimes brushes it and sometimes doesn't and she can be messy with how she puts on, but really just like any teenage girl, I also picture her to be a little muscular since she is a hunter after all! I like seeing her as mixed as any race really, at most 2012 me just pictured my current partner without knowing lmao....
What’s your favorite irl bird?
Answered! I have many but I love the bearded vulture which I have an OC of!
Do you have any bird OCs?
Answered! I plan to make some though, I have one that wasn't originally planned for hatoful, but IT DID have hatoful in mind along with another thing!
What do you think would be a cool crossover for Hatoful?
Answered! I think also a Funamusea x Hatoful crossover would be really cute...
Do you have any human designs headcanons for the birds aside from canon (body type, etc)?
Answered!
What kinds of Hatoful merch would you like to see?
Answered! I do think it would be cute if there was also hatoful link charms, I plan making some in the future whenever I find a seller!
What’s your favorite Absolute Zero character?
Answered!

August’s Featured Game: Marinette
DEVELOPER(S): Teal Crown ENGINE: RPG Maker MV GENRE: Horror, Puzzle, Adventure WARNINGS: Sensitive Themes, Blood/Light Gore SUMMARY: A little girl named Marinette, in the wake of a splitting family and a change of homes, is having a birthday. But this, her eleventh birthday, will present a deadly opportunity to fulfill a special promise. On the night before her birthday, she is drawn into a strange realm; an unnatural dollhouse, populated with dolls who are not quite what they seem. A web of strings lying in wait, and threatening to ensnare the poor marionette; warping her perception, and twisting her every move. Will the strings attach, and force her to become an unwilling puppet, or will she escape this surreal web of strings? What will she have to do to avoid the dangers of the dollhouse, and set herself free?
Our Interview With The Dev Team Below The Cut!
Introduce yourself! *Mitty: "Hello, I'm Mitty! Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in this interview. I'm the main developer of the game and I'm working with a team of friends to make this game a reality. I work mainly on the visuals and programming, and I'll be representing the team, alongside Third! I've been on the community for around two years, even though I tend to not be active very often." *Third: "Hoi, I’m Third! I appreciate you reaching out to interview us. I’m the main composer and writer of Marinette, and I work under Mitty to make the story and soundtrack what we want it to be. I’ve been in the community for little less than Mitt but am even less active in most of my developer discords."
What is your project about? What inspired you to create this game initially? *Mitty: "The game is essentially about a girl that gets trapped inside a dollhouse. A simple concept really can go far ahaha I've always loved themes related to creepy dolls so I wanted to create something related to that. What pushed me initially to start were obviously the inspiration of seeing other devs creating, seeing how far you could go with these engines and create amazing interactive stories, however the huge support from a friend was what made me actually start past the planning and dreaming!" *Third: "Marinette is a story about a little girl becoming entangled in the complicated family and supernatural landscape she finds herself in on her birthday. I enjoy writing short stories about this kind of thing so it’s fantastic to work on a larger project about one of my favorite subjects. My primary inspiration and introduction to this kind of game in general was Pocket Mirror, and I use it the most as a model for how to do certain things. However, I also draw a lot of inspiration from masterpieces like Aria’s Story, Ib, Witch’s House, and Alice Mare."
How long have you been working on your project? *Mitty: "The project has been in the works for around two years now! The first year was mostly planning and right now we are on the right track with the programming and asset creation for the demo, as well as music and sound design for later development. Planning isn't over yet though, especially for the final game." *Third: "I’ve been working on this for almost two years. The soundtrack possessed most of my earlier attention, but now it’s taken a backseat to writing, now that I’m actively writing the scripts for the game now. "
Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Mitty: "Yes! The game has inspirations from plenty of sources, not only strictly RPG Maker Horror games, or games in general for that matter. If I were to mention those, of course games like Ib, The witch's house, Alice Mare, Pocket Mirror, Yume Nikki & .flow, Stray Cat Crossing, Mogeko's games...etc quickly come to mind. When it comes to the aesthetics and visuals, the inspirations come from several different places, including games like Alice Madness Returns, Dofus, Yomawari, The Legend of Mana, Little Nightmares...the list goes on; or other media, like Inu Curry's animation style or video creator nana825763, as well as some anime and music videos. Silent hill is also a huge inspiration for the atmosphere, and hopefully we can pull it off well!" *Third: "My primary inspiration, as I’ve said earlier, is Pocket Mirror, both for its masterful writing and soundtrack. The game’s soundtrack is the main reason I still play piano. Whenever I’m feeling musical, my fingers always hunt out the same kind of haunting, mysterious, and sometimes peaceful and playful melodies that Pocket Mirror is rife with. In the end, our soundtrack is probably going to sound like Pocket Mirror and Aria’s Story’s soundtracks were meshed together. Story wise, commonplace elements in this genre like demons, monsters, mean parents and puzzles that tell the story are commonplace for a reason, and certainly find their way into this one, in their own special way. Every other game I’ve mentioned involves them in some form or another. And young, curious protagonists are also a blast to write and do evil things to and put in difficult, dangerous situations. "
Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Mitty: "We surely have! Many of them in different areas ahaha Taking away bug hunting, I am primarily an artist, so programming for me is a secondary thing. Because of this it's easy to get carried away and hard to realise what can and can't be done. I don't want the game to be visually boring if I can make things move and seem alive! The way I'm handling it is programming like an artist: I think in my head what cool things I can do with my art by not having it completely still, and then it's a matter of executing it on the engine. However this comes with a downside. I tend to tweak things a lot, and that takes quite some time, but I honestly think it's worth it ahaha Also I find it hard to start writing, but when I do, I can't stop orz. Other challenges are also finding plot holes. This is fixed with a lot of studying the story, gathering inspiration and talking with the team. I also struggle a bit with communicating with the team, but thankfully they are all very nice and understanding." *Third: "Main challenge is overcoming the sheer weight of how much I have to learn about music and writing in order for this game to be what I want it to be. I’m a perfectionist, and when I care about something, I can’t tolerate it being worse than it could’ve been. Also, writing is getting more and more complicated and there’s more things and details to keep track of so as not to create inconsistencies or plot holes, especially as we try to revise it and make major changes to the story (Mitt will know what I’m talking about). "
Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Mitty: "It changed a lot, not only in terms of the story and writing, but visually too. The basic concept is close to being the same, though. You can check out old posts in the blog where I consider different styles of mapping and such. Actually, don't, please. It's too old...and my writing...oh god." *Third: "The writing has come a long way, but now that we’ve fleshed out and written down much of the backstory, it’s a much more complicated story than what Mitt first showed me when I joined."
What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don’t have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Mitty: "Initially it was just me, occasionally having Mia to talk about the story and help develop it. Rindre joined as a voice actress very early on and also helped in other aspects of the game. Then I also talked about it with two friends I know in real life, one helped with organization and the other with some concept art, but they aren't that active anymore, even though I still count them as part of the team (Thank you guys btw if you're reading this). Eventually I met Third, an amazing composer and writer, and I asked him to join in! He brought along a friend who is also an amazing composer and writer, Code, and these two are complete madmen of music and writing and I'm super glad to be working with them, as they are super passionate and it makes me really happy ahaha. Bruno is also a really dedicated composer that is helping with a few tracks as well! Miku and Luccinia are two super talented and kind artists that have also been helping a ton with concept art, and their ideas have certainly improved the game as well. We are welcome to more concept artists, though! More heads, more ideas ahaha Recently we got the voice actresses for a few characters in the game, when we did the auditions, and hopefully soon another friend will jump aboard and help with organization and writing! We are a relatively small team, and sometimes progress goes a bit slowly since we can get busy, but we are all doing our best! I’m glad that I’m not alone. Links for their pages and such can be found on the team section on the blog, go support them if you can!"
What is the best part of developing a game? *Mitty: "For me, personally, I love seeing what my team mates come up with, whether it is music or concept art. I also enjoy the love and support we get, and it makes me excited in the development. As for the creation part, I like programming challenging cutscenes and doing cool things with the assets. Progress updates can also be fun to make when I have the time." *Third: "My favorite part is showing Mitt what I’ve written and composed. Making her happy and excited with my work is extremely fulfilling. "
Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Mitty: "Oh, yes! Besides being a cool break from programming hell, it helps me make it less of a hell ahaha I like improvising, though, so I think I play RPG Maker games because I enjoy them for the most part." *Third: "Occasionally, not really. I don’t play many games and I’ve played the heck out of the ones I have."
Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Mitty: "Ah I don't know, honestly. I think I can relate to every character in one way or another, and it's hard picking one, especially since the game isn't out yet and I'd like to keep most characters hidden until the demo. Marinette is definitely one of my favourites, though, I just love how innocent and cute she is. Her cheekiness can be made super interesting ahaha" *Third: "My favorite character is definitely Pierre. He’s a complete blast to write, and gives me lots of cool things to describe and say through him, from his magic tricks to his killer lines and quotes."
Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Mitty: "Hm...Having organized things better in the beginning would have saved a lot of time now, but I don't think it's been that big of a deal anymore. I don't have any regrets that I'm aware of at the moment since everything until this point was necessary to learn and get to where we are now."
Do you plan to explore the game’s universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Mitty: "I'm not sure yet, it depends on the reception and how willing I'll be to continue the story. Even though I would find it fun to make comics, another game or a different midia, realistically I can't tell how willing I'll be to continue developing content about it after the game is finished. Honestly, I hope I can develop more projects on Marinette, we do have content for that, and I absolutely love it with my heart! But it's also equally important to move on to another story. Only time will tell!" Third: "I hope to, but that day is very far away for me. I’ll be gone for quite some time after Marinette is finished, and I hope I’m not forgotten by the time I return. Perhaps I’ll entertain myself with additional short stories exploring the various aftermaths of the game."
What do you most look forward to upon/after the release of a project? *Mitty: "I honestly just want to get the story out there. I'm hoping people will enjoy it if they play the game, and will have a special place in their hearts to keep it on. This project means a lot to me, and having it making people feel things is what I'm looking forward to. I'd love to see other people playing it, definitely. I imagine I'll eventually be relieved to have finally completed it, it'll be a big moment for me to sigh be proud of creating. I'll be able to move on to work on other fun things while I see how this little child of a game is going to do out there in the wild, and that's always nice!" *Third: "Fan reaction, 100%. Having people ask me questions about my work and telling me how much they enjoyed it is my favorite part of writing."
Is there something you’re afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Mitty: "Yes, I don't want to feel empty with nothing to do when I finish the game. I know it will be great and all, but I've been working on it for so long that it's hard to imagine not working on it ahaha! It's a really fun hobby, but it's also engraved in my heart. I want it to be the best it can be, of course, so I'm scared of bugs, inconsistencies and overall it being clearly a bad game. I'm hoping that people will help with critiques on the demo, so I have a better outside perspective of where we are going. I don't want to drop the game, so I'm scared of having to take a long break from it during the development. I'm worried of being a terrible team leader as well." *Third: "I dread plot holes more than anything, and I dread a dull and overall unimpactful story. I want a tale that will punch the viewer in the gut, hard. I want to make them cry. I want to make them laugh. I want them to draw what I wrote, and explore it further in hopefully-not-too-sexual fanfiction."
Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Mitty: "Don't be scared to start. You're going to suffer mid-way if it's a long term project, but keep pushing through, you'll learn a lot and it becomes easier with time. Take breaks and take it easy, step by step. LIST STUFF AND MAKE BACKUPS. Learn with short projects first. Ask for advice from people you admire, but never hold them on a pedestal. It’s always helpful to be a jack of all trades! Try to think from an outsider perspective if you're not sure of how it's going, and if you can, tell people you trust about the game and ask for opinions. Always take criticism well, but don't stress too much over harsher or even meaner comments. Have fun and never forget your starts, the people you meet and the reason you're doing the project for. If you're also an artist, writer, musician, remember this is a great opportunity to add something interesting to your portfolio. Cool visuals attract people, but they are not everything that will keep them hooked." *Third: "The best part of making a game is the people you make it with. The story is the most important ingredient of your game. Prioritize it first, and everything else will fall into place around it. Otherwise, everything will serve some other aspect of your game, and that’s rarely a good thing. Always speak your mind; do not every not say something just because it’ll hurt someone’s feelings. Obviously don’t be a tool, but if you ever have to choose between hurting the game and someone’s pride, pick someone’s pride. It’s much kinder in the long run."
Question from last month's featured dev Froach Club: Have you ever had a moment where you got completely stuck or became intensely frustrated while using RPG Maker? *Mitty: "Yes I have, I think everyone has QwQ Despite silly mistakes, I've gotten stuck several times, but honestly it's usually either us doing something stupidly hard that can be done another way, or we are just not skilled enough yet, and it's better to come back later. You can usually do most things you wanna do if you have the advantage of knowing the programming language your RPG Maker Engine uses I think. Google is your friend always, and sleeping about it also helps. I once dreamt of a whole sequence to fix a problem, and it worked! ahaha Always take it easy and don't give up, but know your limits and the limits of the engine!"
We mods would like to thank Teal Crown for agreeing to our interview! We believe that featuring the developer and their creative process is just as important as featuring the final product. Hopefully this Q&A segment has been an entertaining and insightful experience for everyone involved!
Remember to check out Marinette if you haven’t already! See you next month!

Diamond in the Witch House- Chapter 1
-This is a horror fanfic! Finally get to show and develop Yume as a character!-
Yume Tsukiyami pressed his head onto his seatbelt. There was a grinding feeling in his gut ever sense he had gotten into the van, which wasn’t really an unusual thing for him. He hated car-trips, or any vehicle related transportation that involved sitting next to someone. His walkman’s music was cranked, but he made sure not to play it too loud to disturb anybody around him. He closed his eyes momentarily before feeling a light tap on his shoulder. Masumi Akahoshi, his longterm best friend and the person squished into middle seat beside him gave a contented smile.
She must have seen his uneasiness, because she spoke softer than how she usually did.
“You good?” She asked. Yume shifted up in the seat, straightening himself out and lowering his headphones onto his shoulders.
“Yeah… I guess,” He muttered. There was a stuffy feeling in his ears, that put pressure onto his head as well as made everything a tiny bit more quiet. “Can ask for some water up front?”
Masumi nodded and leaned over to the row in front of them and then tapped onto the head of the person in front of her.
“Koichi was it? Can you pass some water back here, Yume’s a bit thirsty.” She asked.
“Yeah, sure thing!” Koichi Hirose was one of the other 8 people in the van. He leaned down near his feet and handed Masumi a water bottle out of the bag in front of him. “Thanks!” She replied handing Yume the water.
Taking a drink of water he scanned the van. Okuyasu Nijimura was sitting in front of him, he did’t hate the guy, but he always seemed to make Yume irritated. Next to him, previously mentioned was Koichi. Due to being smaller than most people he was seated in the middle of the van. And then on the other end was Josuke Higashikata, the one who had invited him on the trip. Yume was on pretty good terms with the guy and considered him to be a friend. Behind Josuke, and seated beside Masumi, was Yukako Yamagishi. What he got from Josuke briefly was that she was Koichi’s girlfriend. She had not spoken one word sense they had gotten into the van, which did not help the fact she was very intimidating to both Yume and Masumi. In front of Okuyasu, in the passenger’s seat was the manga artist, Rohan Kishibe. He was older from the teens packed in the van and apparently invited himself after overhearing Koichi talk about the trip. Yume had read some of his works but wasn’t a huge fan despite being a “huge occult junkie.” He really did’t get anything from the guy. And finally, the one driving the van and the chaperone of the gaggle of children in the back, was Jotaro Kujo. The guy was apparently Josuke’s nephew which Yume thought was a joke at first. To put it in words, Yume found the guy to be downright scary. He also had a quiet nature, which Yume could relate to, but he was a big guy. He would often glance into the rearview mirror anytime the van got “too loud” which would make everyone shut up momentarily.
“How much longer will this take?” Okuyasu groaned, attempting to make himself comfortable by readjusting his position. Jotaro tapped on the GPS.
“Not much longer now, be patient.” He said. Josuke looked out the window into the endless clutter of trees that quickly passed the van. Koichi looked to Rohan and noticed that he had his large sketchbook out.
“What are you drawing?” He asked, trying to occupy himself. Rohan glanced back.
“Just some trees as well as some reference photo’s of Jotaro-san driving.” He piped, “I’m just really waiting until we get to the house. I’m sure I’ll get some good material there.”
“What are you all looking forward to?” Josuke asked looking around the van. It felt like a forced game of 20 questions.
“A hike around the woods.” Masumi chirped.
“A few days to get away from the bustling streets of Morioh. I just want to relax a bit.” Koichi said with a smile.
“I second that.” Yume said escaping the conversation, and readjusted his headphones back over his ears.
“The bathroom. I need to pee.” Okuyasu said. A small fit of giggles broke out.
“I’m personally looking forward to hanging out with you guys, and maybe by the end of it we’ll all know each other a little bit more.” Josuke said. He radiated positivity.
“Well then, get ready for it. We’re here.” Jotaro said. The van pulled into a long dirt driveway as the large cabin was put in view.

IM Swiftly Descending Darkness, Chapter 5
Mokou already felt that something was wrong, and the moment she came into view of the Aoki Yume’s Children’s Home all but confirmed it.
The house was quiet. The lights were on, all of the outside lanterns were lit, but there was no one in sight. The surrounding fields and the garden were all empty.
If there was something that could be counted on at the orphanage, it was that it was never quiet. Even in the evening after the kids had been brought it one could count on seeing someone about, such as Joshua up on a ladder along the side of the house, repairing a loose window, or Haruna relaxing on the porch.
But there was nobody in sight, and while it was late afternoon, it was still before the time when the kids would be brought in.
Mokou felt a rare flash of fear, a very rare sensation for her. She tightened her fists and threw everything into a final burst of speed.
The house rushed up to her. She spun around, directed her feet toward the front path, and hit the ground running. From there, she sped up the path, her bare feet kicking up clouds of dust, and leapt up the stairs toward the-
Front path.
Mokou skidded to a stop and looked around in bewilderment. Now she was facing away from the house, as if she had been running away from it instead of toward.
Also, she was pretty sure she had heard someone yell “Ow!” from inside.
Mokou turned back toward the house. For the most part it looked the same, but there did seem to be something off about it, something she hadn’t noticed coming in.
Tilting her head to one side, Mokou squinted her eyes. Sure enough, all around the front porch were strange refractions of light, rippling out like the surface of a pond disturbed by a pebble.
Huh.
Mokou took a slow, deliberate step forward into the field of disorientation. Her vision quickly spun around, and she found herself facing away from the porch again. At the same time, someone yelped, “Damn it!”
It Mokou a moment to realize what was going on. That had to be Haruna. Haruna’s particular gift was the ability to essentially flip reality, to turn it back around on people. Which sounded like something that would be immensely useful, but unfortunately she was unable to maintain it over a large area for very long, and if anyone or anything actually got flipped by it, it gave her a massive headache.
Rather than subject her friend to a skull-splitting migraine, Mokou cupped her hands around her mouth and called, “Hey! It’s me! Let me in!”
Immediately a clamor of voices sounded within. “It’s Miss Mokou!” she heard Tomohiro say. “Let her in! Quick!”
“How do we know it’s actually her?” Shinji retorted. “Maybe it’s another youkai, one that just sounds like her!”
Melissa said something very quick and frantic-sounding in Spanish.
Rolling her eyes, Mokou called out again. “Look, either you guys let me in, or I’m gonna start walking toward the porch over and over again until Haruna’s head splits like an egg, okay? It’s me!”
“That’s her,” Satoko’s voice said. “Let her in, Haruna.”
The shimmers dropped, and Mokou heard the sound of the front door’s heavy lock being unbolted.
She rushed inside. There, she saw the most of the kids huddled into a tight group while some of the other adults stood protectively over them. Mokou hastily shut the door behind her and relocked it.
“What happened?” she demanded.
Haruna was sitting on the bottom step of the staircase with her aching head clutched with one hand, with Haruhi standing over her, holding onto her other hand. Sniffing, Haruhi glowered at Mokou with wet and puffy eyes. “Where were you?” she said.
“What? I was getting information like I said I would!”
“Well, you should have been here! You could’ve stopped this, stopped them from…from…”
“Enough!” Satoko said. She was standing with Akito crying in her arms, her normally stern features now a mix of anger and fear. “This isn’t the time to tear into one another! I know we’re all scared and upset, but I’m the one who asked Mokou to go look for answers. If you have to be mad at someone, be mad at me.”
Haruhi just shook her head and ran off.
Mokou took a deep breath and hissed it out through her teeth. “What. Happened?”
“It was youkai,” Satoko said. Her eyes were wet with tears, her face shimmering with sweat. “Wild spider youkai apparently. Five of the kids accidentally wound up outside of the charms during flying lessons. The spiders just…just showed up and took them.”
Mokou looked over the group and took a quick headcount. Noba was sitting in a nearby chair, his head in his hands, with his friends Shinji, Tomohiro, and Kazuchika with him. Check. The younger boys, specifically Yoshi, Hiro, Keiichi, Dai, and Yuuki, were in another group, whispering amongst themselves. Check. Melissa, the only girl present, was pacing back and forth, wringing her hands together as she muttered under her breath in her native language. Check, And Akito was in Satoko’s arms. Check.
However, more than five children were gone. Both of the terrible trios were absent, as was Melissa’s fellow oddball Kana.
“Who?” she said.
Satoko sighed. “Hayate, Haruko, Eiko, Kana, and Keine.”
Each name felt like a hammer-blow to her heart, but when she got to Keine Mokou felt something hot and powerful unlock deep within her. Because while she was fond and protective of all the children, Keine was kind of her favorite. Keine had been part of the trio that had rescued her from the snow in the first place. Keine had been the first to reach out to her after she had been brought in, the first to form any kind of relationship with her when all the other children had been too scared to talk to the mysterious and dangerous stranger now in their midst.
“What about the rest?” Mokou said. “Where’s Kohta and Rumia?”
“Upstairs,” Satoko said. “They, uh, understandably wanted to be alone.”
Right, that made sense. After all, it was their friend that had been taken.
Five kids. Five little girls, taken by spider youkai.
Mokou knew the habits of wild spider youkai, she knew them very well. Some spiders were nice. Some were quite friendly people, in fact. But others were not. Others were the sort that did terrible things to other people, that did terrible, horrible, absolutely monstrous things to children. And she felt quite certain that these were of that latter category.
Mokou closed her eyes and mentally counted down from ten. “And you just let them?” she snapped before she had even gotten to four.
Haruna quickly cut in. “We did everything he could, kid,” the rough-looking woman said. “Joshua tried to stop them, we both did. But they were ready for us. Hit us with some kind of web. Then they just flew off.”
Joshua. He was missing too. And so was Shion.
“Where is Joshua?” Mokou said. “And where’s Shion?”
“Shion flew to go get help,” Satoko told her. “Old Pine Village still supports us, and it’s the closest, so she went there.”
Old Pine Village. Right. That also made sense, but Satoko had only answered one of her questions. “And Joshua?”
Satoko bit her lower lip. “He went after them.”
The air around Mokou was starting to grow hazy. She heard several of the children whispering to one another, saw them draw away from her. “After them,” Mokou repeated. “After whom? To where?”
“The youkai. He went after the youkai. He said that he couldn’t let them take…take them to…”
Of course he did. Mokou closed her eyes. “And where did the youkai come from?” she said, her eyes still shut. “Where did they take the kids?”
“We don’t really-”
Mokou’s eyes snapped open. The haze around her vision was now a film of red.
Satoko gasped and backed away. Akito stopped crying, and just stared.
“I know,” Mokou growled. “I know where they came from. I know where they took them. The Youkai Forest. Of course it is.”
“Mokou, your eyes,” Satoko said as she covered Akito’s with her hand. “They’re glowing!”
Mokou knew this. Mokou didn’t care. “They took them to the Youkai Forest, and Joshua went after them! That’s where they are now, that’s where he is now, isn’t it?”
Satoko’s mouth wordlessly opened and closed like a fish’s, then she stuttered. “Y-Y-Yes, th-that does seem to be the most likely-”
“Most likely my ass! Look, I’ve spent the last few days hunting down whatever news I could, and what I found out is that some weird shit is going on in that damn forest, and someone from outside the forest is causing it!”
“Wait, say that again?” Haruna said. “You mean to tell me-”
“I said what I said, now get out of my way!” Mokou roared.
Haruna backed up. She hadn’t backed away from anyone in years, but she did so now, though not quick enough. Mokou shoved her aside and made for the stairs.
Children parted like ants from a flood, and Haruna hastily made herself scarce. Mokou stomped her way up, leaving blackened footprints sizzling on every step.
She was coming close to losing it. She was coming close to losing all control and just letting the raging fires that burned within her at all times just burst free. That didn’t happen often. Even at her most violent, when her life had been an unceasing cycle of pain and death, she had been careful to restrict it to a single person, someone who both deserved it and could take it.
But there had been a small handful of times, oh so very few, in which she had been pushed too far, when all other options had failed, when she had been confronted by an evil so sickening that her own monstrous soul paled in comparison and the only option was to cleanse everything with fire.
Mokou was not at the point yet. But she was getting close.
She threw open the door to her room and went straight for her dresser. She yanked the bottom drawer straight out and hurled it aside. Then she reached into the empty cavity and pulled out a small oak box.
It was this box that she set on the bed and opened up. Inside were two stacks of aging, yellow paper rectangles, all covered with a series of characters. In between them was a pile of old red-and-white ribbons. The characters on the left-hand stack were all the same, indicating them to be charms that protected against fire. Similar characters were written on the ribbons.
Mokou took those charms and stuck them all over her pants. Then she picked up one of the ribbons and muttered a word. In response, the entire pile fluttered up into the air. They surrounded her like a swarm of butterflies, and then dove in, tying themselves into bows through her long locks of hair. Mokou anticipated violence where she was going, and that meant a great deal of fire was probably going to be slung around. If that happened, then she’d rather not come home naked.
The second stack was smaller, and the runes and glyphs inscribed on each card was different. They were spellcards, each one containing an easily unleashed burst of offensive magic. Along with the glowing magical bullets known as danmaku, Spellcards were the preferred weapon of Gensokyians, and having a few on hand could be the difference between life and death.
Mokou picked up her stack of spellcards. She flourished them like a magician playing a trick to impress children, folded them back up again, and stuck them into her pocket. All right. Now she was ready to go.
Then, before she went through the door, she paused. Wait a minute.
Mokou took the cards out of her pocket and inspected them. It was as she had thought. She was supposed to have twelve cards, but there were only nine. Three of them were missing.
“Satoko!” she yelled.
“What?” Satoko was already at the door, sans Akito. “What is it?”
“My spellcards!” Mokou thrust the nine she had at her. “Who took them?”
Satoko blinked in confusion. “What do you mean? You’re holding them.”
“Only some! Three are missing! Did Joshua take them?”
“Uh, no? H-He took one of the usual anti-youkai packs we have in storage. I don’t think he even knew you had those.” Satoko frowned. “Actually, I didn’t know you had those. Did you have a stash of spellcards this whole time?”
Mokou barely heard the question. Her mind was racing, filtering through the list of likely culprits.
She ruled out Satoko, Haruna, and Haruhi immediately. Of the three, only Satoko had ever even been in her room, and if she had taken her spellcards she would have told her without apology. Besides, she probably would have taken the whole deck if it meant protecting the kids.
Shion, maybe? To give her some extra protection on her trip? Incredibly unlikely. Shion also had never been in her room and had no way of knowing of her stash. So it had to be one of the kids. But which one would-
“Wait,” she said. “Wait, wait, wait. You said Rumia and Kohta are up here, right?”
“Well, yes,” Satoko said. “They had locked themselves in the playroom. But-”
Then realization washed over her face, draining it of color. Her hand went to her mouth, and she turned and ran.
“Kohta!” Mokou heard her calling. “Rumia? Answer me!”
Mokou didn’t follow. She didn’t need to. She already had pieced together what had happened.
Those little idiots. Those brave, loyal, infuriating idiots!
The spiders had five of their kids. There was one adult looking for them, and he was just as helpless as they were in his own way. And apparently two more kids had gone in on their own.
That was eight people she needed to find in a large and dense forest, eight people that were in very mortal danger and weren’t even all in the same place.
When Satoko returned to Mokou’s room after having confirmed that Rumia and Kohta were nowhere in the house, she found it empty with the window shattered outward and a trail of smoke still rising in the open air beyond, one that led all the way to the Youkai Forest.
…
Rumia and Kohta’s decision to sneak out and go after the spiders that had taken their friends had been easy enough. After that display in the market, they could not trust anyone to come to their aid, and while Mr. Joshua was a good guy, he wasn’t exactly the first person that they would have selected to mount a successful rescue operation, especially by himself.
Getting out of the house had been easy. Mr. Joshua and Miss Shion were both gone, Miss Haruna had her hands full with shielding the house, Miss Haruhi was a flustered wreck, and all of Miss Satoko’s attention was given to trying to keep things in order. So the second no eyes were on them, they had broken into the emergency defense closet, already left conveniently unlocked by Mister Joshua, and took a pair of anti-youkai knives and some charms. Then Kohta had snuck up into Miss Mokou’s room to raid her own stash of weapons, coming away with three of her spellcards.
Once they had been appropriately armed, the two of them had crept into the basement, stole through the larders to the outside door so as to bypass Miss Haruna’s shield, and off they went.
It had been so easy, but when the two of them were actually away from the fields and taking their first steps into the forest, Rumia found herself kind of wishing that there had been more resistance. After all, the Youkai Forest was not quite as notorious as its larger and darker cousin, the Forest of Magic, but its reputation was plenty dark enough.
As it was in the middle of autumn, most of the trees had shed their needles, with left the pair with plenty of moonlight to see by. It was a small comfort. The naked branches reminded Rumia far too much of gnarled skeletons grasping at the sky with bony fingers. The ground was painfully uneven and covered with a thick layer of rotting needles and bark, which made moving forward slow and tedious. Though morning was still hours away, a wispy mist lay around the trees’ base, further slowing their progress.
And of course, there were the noises.
Every hoot of an owl, every snap of a twig sent shivers down the two children’s spines. Rumia had heard plenty of stories of children who wandered into woods such as this and were never seen again, at least not in one piece. Normally she loved those stories, with their macabre tones and gory endings. But it was one thing to recount such ghastly tales to her trembling friends while using her scary voice and laughing at how much it made them shake. It was something else entirely to be willingly stepping foot into one of those tales herself.
Then there were the other stories, the ones with similar set-ups but different endings, the ones in which the lost children would also never come home, but not because they were killed, but because the forest ended up changing them, turning them into something other than human, dooming them to forever wander the forest’s dark paths, looking to become the monster in someone else’s story.
Though she would never admit it, those were the stories that scared Rumia the most. Her own family had been killed by marauding youkai. Had any of them been lost children themselves? What if the same happened to her? What if she were doomed to become some red-eyed, sharp-toothed thing that devoured the families of other children? The first time she had heard one of those stories, she had been unable to sleep for most of the night. Every creak of the old house had sounded like the soft footsteps of some dark thing, every whisper of wind at the window seeming to call her name, while the moonlight made even the smallest of shadows elongate across the floor, stretching out and reaching for her.
Rumia’s hand was clasped tightly to Kohta’s, and for once neither of them had a joke.
They moved forward as quietly as they could, taking care not to disturb the forest debris beneath their feet. In this they were doing…poorly. It felt like something crunched with every footstep, and by the time they had gone out of side of the forest’s edge Rumia was convinced that every animal and youkai for kilometers had been alerted.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
“Maybe-” she started to say.
Kohta flinched. “Ah! Gods, you scared the crap out of me!”
“Sorry. But maybe we’d better go back.”
Kohta stared at her like she had grown two heads. “And let Keine get eaten?”
“No! But we don’t know where she is. We can’t help her if we get eaten too!”
Kohta sneered at her in disgust. “No. I’m not abandoning her. Go back if you’re too scared.”
“I’m not scared,” Rumia said stubbornly. “I just don’t, you know, I just don’t think-”
“Shhh!” Kohta clamped a hand over her mouth. “Look!”
There was a light up ahead, bobbing through the trees. The two children looked at each other. Rumia gulped. If there was one universal truth in all the stories they had heard, it was that mysterious lights floating through creepy old forests at night were bad news!
The two crouched behind a tree and peeked out. The light hadn’t been their imagination. It was slowly moving through the woods about twenty meters from where they were. What was more, there seemed to a dark, shadowy figure following it. Rumia couldn’t make out their features, but it didn’t seem very tall.
“Is that a ghost?” Rumia whispered.
“There’s no such thing as ghosts,” Kohta whispered back.
Despite the severity of their situation, the stupidity of that comment made Rumia just stop worrying about the light and stare at her friend in shock. “Kohta, that might be the dumbest thing I have ever heard you-”
“Keeeeeiiiiiiinnnnnneeeeee!” the dark figure suddenly called out, its warbling voice echoing through the night.
Rumia and Kohta both ducked out of sight.
“Kaaaaaaannnnnnnnaaaaaaaaa!” the voice called. “Eeeeeiiiiiiiiikoooooo!”
Rumia was shaking all over. It was a ghost, a dark phantom mournfully crying out the names of their probably dead friends, doomed to forever wail the names of the deceased like an eternal eulogy for the-
“Oh,” Kohta said. “It’s him! Mr. Joshua!”
Rumia slowly breathed out. He was right. “Great. I thought we were in a different part of the forest than him.”
“I guess not. Let’s go before he sees us.”
Kohta started to leave, but Rumia tugged sharply on his hand. “Wait,” she said. “Maybe we’d better go to him.”
“No way!”
“But-”
Kohta wrenched his hand from hers. “Look, if you’re too scared, then you go talk to him! He’ll probably just have to take you back, and he’ll just stop them from searching! Keine and the others could die while he’s doing that! We came out here to help find them, not make the rescue take longer!”
Rumia winced. That was a very good point. Sighing, Rumia just nodded and got up to follow.
The pair stealthily moved away from the other search searcher. It felt like it took forever, but eventually the light disappeared, as did the sound of Mr. Joshua’s voice. The only sound was that of their footsteps crushing leaves and sticks.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
When she was absolutely certain that they were alone, Rumia said, “There’s no such thing as ghosts? Really?”
“Well, I’ve never seen one,” Kohta said, somewhat defensively.
“Wow,” Rumia said. “Wow.”
“Look, everyone knows that when you die, your soul gets taken across the River Suzune by the Shinigami! That’s just the rules! You don’t get to stick around haunting your old house and-”
“Shhh!” Now it was Rumia’s turn to slap a hand over her friend’s mouth.
Kohta shut up, though he was obviously bursting with questions.
Rumia pointed a finger. When Kohta saw what she did, he made a low whimpering sound.
There was a clearing up ahead, a circle clear of trees and bathed in moonlight. There wasn’t much in it other than patches of wild grass and some small stones. However, sitting directly in the center was a…something, something that Rumia could only see the basic shape of. It was large, hulking, and had a pair of great elk antlers protruding from the top.
Rumia shied back. It was one of the great monsters of the forest, it had to be! How many stories of had she grown up hearing of the dark spirits that wandered these woods, of their bloodthirsty dispositions and their taste for the flesh of children?
She tugged on Kohta’s hand and tilted her head back the way they came. Maybe if they crept away as slowly and quietly as they could, they could get away without attracting its attention.
“Wait,” Kohta whispered, his eyes somehow narrowing even further as he studied the towering silhouette.
Rumia gawked at him in disbelief. Wait? Why should they wait? They needed to get away from that thing right the hell now!
However, Kohta didn’t seem to share her rational fear of whatever the thing in the clearing was. “I don’t think it’s alive,” he whispered again.
Rumia quite frankly didn’t care. Lots of things weren’t alive. That didn’t make them any less likely to kill the two of them!
However, Kohta was not to be deterred. He began to slowly creep around the clearing, keeping his eye on the thing. And since she couldn’t pull him away without making a racket, Rumia was forced to go with him.
The silhouette didn’t move as they circled around it. Rumia bit her lower lip to keep from whimpering in fear as she watched its horned head, just waiting for it to suddenly turn toward them.
It didn’t.
“I think-” Kohta started to say, right before Rumia slapped a hand over his mouth. She gawked at him for being so stupid as to talk with that thing so close.
Kohta rolled his eyes. He pulled Rumia’s hand off and inclined his head toward the silhouette.
Rumia looked again. Come to think of it, it didn’t look like any kind of creature. Instead, it seemed kind of rough and misshapen. However, it did have a definite shape, one with a high and wide back and-
“It’s a chair,” Kohta sniggered. “That’s all it is. A chair.”
Rumia shot him a dirty look, but he was right. It was a chair, a great big chair made of stone and covered with moss, sticks, and even a few mushrooms.
“A chair. You were scared of a chair!”
Rumia flicked him in the ear. “That still doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous and evil! It’s probably like some kind of cursed throne!”
Kohta shrugged. “Well, okay, but it’s not doing anything.”
Rumia ignored him. She wanted to see what the horns were all about.
She continued to circle around the clearing, bringing the front of the chair into view. It was still hard to make out the details, but her eyes had adjusted pretty well to the darkness, and there was plenty of moonlight to see by. Just a little further, just a little further…
Then Kohta inhaled sharply. Rumia swallowed.
There, seated in the chair, was an amalgamation of bones, seemingly collected from a dozen different creatures. Big bear bones, slender bird bones, and even Human bones, all carefully pieced together in a massive humanoid shape swathed in ragged clothes that swirled in the night breeze.
And seated on the top of its shoulders was a grinning bear’s skull affixed with a pair of elk antlers.
“What the hell?” Rumia said.
“I…” Kohta took a step backward.
Rumia shot him a look. “Still think it’s not scary?”
“I…” Kohta’s face had gone pale. “Maybe we’d better, you know, leave it alone.”
Then the horned bear skull turned to fix its empty eye sockets right at them.
Rumia gasped and Kohta made a sound like he had gotten kicked in the gut. The two spun around and ran from the clearing as fast as their feet would take them.
…
“Eeeeeiiiiikoooooo!” Joshua called.
There was no response. He had been tramping through the forest for the better part of an hour now, and still had found nothing. No response, no tracks, no any sign of the kids or the monster that had taken them.
He was starting to get frantic. The youkai had flown through the air during their retreat. What if they simply had dropped down into the forest right at their lair? If so, then there was probably no trail to be found. He was just going to wander around aimlessly until something ended up picking him off as well.
Pushing those dark thoughts from his mind, Joshua muttered a short, terrified prayer under his breath. Those had been coming with greater regularity the longer his search went on, and they were becoming increasingly desperate.
Then something cracked under his feet.
Joshua paused, and then stepped back. He knelt down.
It was another pile of bones, those of some kind of big cat. From the look of things it had been dead and picked clean of meat for weeks, and now all sorts of things were growing all over its ribs and vertebrae.
Joshua closed his eyes. Actually, he hadn’t found nothing. He had been finding plenty of bones. No Human bones yet, thank God, but that might have already changed.
In his mind’s eye, he saw the ravaged and defiled remains of the children, their flesh and meat ripped from their bones and gobbled down, their bloody skeletons left for the scavengers and the remains of their clothing left to rot, until exposure to the elements erased all trace of their existence, leaving no evidence that their had ever been a Haruko, a Kana, a Hayate, an Eiko, or a Keine.
It was a horrific fate, and it happened all the time. There were probably bones from a few hundred children scattered all over the forest.
Joshua refused to let it happen to his.
He rose up and set off again. “Haaaaaaruuuuuuuuukooooooooo!” he called. “Can you hear-”
Something seized him by the back of his collar. Before he could react, he was swung around and slammed backfirst into a nearby tree trunk, with a forearm thrust across his windpipe.
Gasping like a fish, Joshua looked up to see two blazing red eyes in a coldly beautiful face, one framed by locks of shimmering silver hair with bared teeth.
“Quiet, you idiot!” Mokou hissed. “Do you want to get yourself eaten? Because this is how you get yourself eaten!”
…
“Stop,” Kohta panted. “Stop. It’s not chasing us.”
Rumia might have argued the point, but to tell the truth she was willing to take any excuse to stop running. She was young and active, but hadn’t had to run that fast for that long before. Even footraces back home had only lasted a few seconds.
The two children collapsed in the shelter of a gnarled tree as they tried to catch their breath. Despite being completely out of breath and nursing aching legs, Rumia still made a point of checking to see if Kohta was correct.
Sure enough, there was no sign of a bony amalgamation pursuing them, though honestly it was so dark that simply not being visible didn’t count for much.
“What was that?” Kohta said.
“How the hell should I know?” Rumia said. “Seems like no matter how many stories we hear about this place, someone always has a new one.”
“Well, I guess now there’s one more.”
“I guess.” Then, despite the direness of their situation, Rumia couldn’t resist sneering at him. “So, still don’t believe in ghosts?”
Kohta sighed. “Oh, shut up, Rumia.”
“Seriously, that is easily the dumbest thing I have ever heard you say.”
“I said, shut up, Rumia!”
Rumia did so, though she didn’t stop smirking.
After a while Kohta said, “Hey. Do you hear that?”
Rumia did, actually. In fact she had been about to ask Kohta the same question.
There was a low buzzing sound, like hundreds of insects beating their wings, barely perceptible over the sound of their own breathing, but now that it had been pointed out it was clearly not her imagination.
“Yeah.” Rumia’s face twisted up in confusion. “What the hell is that?”
Kohta shrugged.
Now there was a second sound, a deep, bass pulsing, like a sluggish heartbeat.
Something rustled the leaves nearby, beyond a tall tree. The two children tiptoed toward the tree. As they did, the buzzing grew shriller and shriller, until Rumia could feel it in her teeth. As for the thumping pulse, that only grew deeper and deeper, until Rumia could feel it in her gut.
They pressed their backs to the tree and peeked out around it.
Beyond the tree was a short but steep incline into a leaf-covered depression. And standing in those leaves with its back to them was a…a thing.
It was humanoid, with two legs to stand upon, a torso were a torso ought to be, two arms dangling from its shoulders, and an oval-shaped head on those shoulders, but that was where the similarities ended. Its was just so horribly long and thin, with sticklike legs taller than either one of the children were, an emaciated body twice the length of a normal Human man at less than half the thickness, and arms that hung down to its knees. Its head was completely hairless, with beams of moonlight shining off of its pale dome. It wore a form-fitting outfit of black, and its flesh was as white as bleached bones.
The pulsing grew louder, or maybe that was just Rumia’s heartbeat. There was no question about it now, no “maybe it’s evil and maybe it’s just a pile of rocks and bones.” This was an actual youkai monster, one of the evil wanderers of the Youkai Forest.
The slender creature didn’t seem to have noticed them. It was calmly loping forward, taking long and slow strides, its footsteps barely disturbing the leaves. Rumia looked over to Kohta and tilted her head in the opposite direction. Kohta nodded.
Then the creature paused, and everything fell silent. The buzzing stop, as did the pulse.
Rumia and Kohta went stiff.
The creature raised its head, as if sniffing the air. It reached up with one disturbingly long arm to touch the branches up above.
Then the buzzing returned, and Rumia swore she heard voices in it. The pounding returned as well, staring off slow but building to a thundering percussion, as the slender creature slowly turned around to look over its shoulder directly at them.
It had no face. From its pointed chin to the round dome of its head was nothing but a blank expanse of skin.
Oh, screw this!
With nothing left to gain from hiding, Rumia and Kohta again spun around and fled.
…
“Mokou, wait!” Joshua said, holding up a hand. “Just calm down, okay?”
“Calm down? You want me to calm down?” Mokou shook her head in disgust. “Damn it, Josh! The hell are you even thinking? Walking about in the open like this, hollering away like a crazy person, it’s a miracle that every youkai in a hundred kilometers hasn’t zeroed in on you! Hell, maybe they have! Maybe you’re just lucky I got to you first!”
Joshua had to admit that she had a point. Certainly his way of searching hadn’t exactly been wise. But damn it, what was he supposed to do?
“I was just-”
“I know! You wanted to go save the kids! I heard the whole thing. But by the gods, Josh! How the hell are you supposed to help anyone if you get eaten before you even find them? Or for that matter, even if they do hear you hollering, how are they supposed to answer? They got taken by spiders! Spiders always at the very least gag their prey, and you’ll just let those crawly fucks know you’re coming!”
To this, Joshua had no answer.
“And if your God decides to blow all of your accumulated good will in getting you there unnoticed and undevoured, the hell where you planning to do then? Fight them? Sneak the kids out without any of them noticing? They’re spiders! They probably got them all webbed up, and you don’t even know how to fight to begin with!”
Joshua slowly breathed out. “Yes, I do.”
“What?”
“I do know how to fight. I’ve done it before. A lot, actually.”
Mokou stared at him. “Oh, yeah? You mean back where you came from? In the Outside World?”
“Yes,” Joshua admitted.
“Well, that’s great and all, but that won’t help you here! The rules of fighting are totally different, and you don’t have any of your fancy Outside World weapons to help you!”
“I know how to use danmaku,” Joshua said. He pointed a finger at a nearby bush, and a spray of glowing blue orbs shot out to pulverize its leaves. “I can shoot bullets just fine.”
“Well, goody golly-licious for you,” Mokou said as she sarcastically clapped her hands. “So do they! And they’ve been using it a long longer than you, and definitely more regularly! Have you ever even gotten into a danmaku battle before? Ever had to shoot your bullets at someone outside of fun or practice?”
Joshua bowed his head. “No.”
“Well, I guarantee that they have! Probably pretty regularly at that! You’ll be lucky if you even managed to nick one of them before they riddle you full of holes! And then they’ll eat you!”
“I brought this though,” Joshua said as he slid the anti-youkai knife from its sheathe. He held it up so Mokou could see the runes on its handle. “This will-”
Mokou’s hand suddenly came up, smacking the bottom of the knife. Taken by surprise, Joshua’s hand reflexively popped open and the knife sailed up and away.
Mokou snatched it out of the air. “You see how easily I did that?” she said, pointing the blade at the dumbstruck man. “You are completely out of your depth here. So go home, Joshua. Go home and let me handle this.”
As flustered as he was, and as embarrassed as he was, Joshua still managed to keep his shaking legs planted on the ground beneath him. “No,” he said.
“No?”
“No. I’m not going back.” Joshua said. “Don’t you understand? I was the ones watching those kids. They got taken under my watch! I can’t just stand aside and do nothing!”
Mokou’s face twisted up in annoyance. “Oh, spare me from kind-hearted fools!” she groaned as she slapped a hand across her own face. “Josh, I have exactly zero time for your guilty conscience, so back off and leave this to the professionals! Specifically, me!”
Joshua was a fair bit shorter than Mokou and thus had to incline his head to look her in the face. As such, he was in the perfect position to take notice of something moving in the branches behind her. Something with gleaming orange eyes. “Mokou…” he said.
“Because if any of those kids got hurt because you held me up, then I swear-”
“Mokou, watch out!”
The shadow had leapt from its branch right at Mokou’s back. Joshua reached up to grab Mokou by the arm in hopes of pulling her out of the way.
Several things then happened, either at the same time or in such quick succession that it might as well have been at the same time.
First, the moment that Joshua’s hands closed around Mokou’s arm, it abruptly swung to the side, lifting him right off his feet and hurling him to the ground.
The second was the sound of something whistling through the air right over his head, something fast enough for him to feel the wind of its passing.
The third was a feminine voice grunting in pain and surprise.
Joshua rolled onto her back and sat up. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was expecting to see, but what he found waiting for him surely wasn’t it.
Mokou was standing balanced on one leg, the other held straight out, her foot shoved up against the throat of another woman. The woman was of medium height and slender in build, with grey-ish blue skin, softly glowing orange eyes, and bright orange hair tied into a pair of pigtails. She was wearing a sleeveless black-and-blue striped blouse, a tattered purple skirt, and black-and-orange stripped leggings. On her hand she wore a sort of cap that had a pair of floppy horns made of felt.
Mokou had her pinned up against a tree, and she was clawing at the foot pressing at her larynx.
“Juniper Spice,” Mokou said. “Well, as I live and breathe.”
Joshua gawked at her. “Wait, you know this person?”
“We’ve met,” Mokou said. “We’re not friends.”
The youkai woman identified as Juniper choked and coughed. “I…I didn’t know…it was you,” she said. “I didn’t!”
“Yeah, well, tough.” Her foot still keeping Juniper trapped, Mokou flicked Joshua’s knife up between her fingers.
A second later Joshua realized what she intended. “No! Mokou, wait!”
It was too late. Mokou hurled the knife. It sailed straight and true to embed itself right in Juniper’s forehead, neatly between her eyes.
Juniper’s whole body jerked and she let out a small squeak. Then, as bright red blood ran down her nose, her whole body started to convulse.
As Joshua stared in horror, Mokou lowered her foot. Juniper stayed where she was, shaking and writhing as black steam rose up from where the knife was stuck. Foamy spittle bubbled up from her mouth to drip down her chin.
Then she slumped lifelessly, and her body began to dissolve.
Orangish vapor billowed into the air to disappear, and when it had all dissipated, nothing was left of Juniper Spice, no evidence of what had happened to her save for the knife itself, which was still partially embedded in the trunk of the tree.
“You killed her,” Joshua said in disbelief.
Mokou calmly grabbed the knife’s handle and yanked it out. “Uh, yeah? She was trying to kill us. Hell, she probably had been stalking you for some time. If I hadn’t come along she would’ve gotten you.”
“But…”
“Relax, Josh. She’s a youkai. Getting smoked like that is part of their everyday life. Give it a few minutes, and she’ll come right back with a bad mood and a healthy amount of respect.”
“You…Wait, are you sure?”
Sighing, Mokou tossed the knife into the dirt in front of Joshua. “Yes, Josh. I’m sure. I’ve killed her before. For fuck’s sake, you’ve been in Gensokyo how long? This is basic youkai stuff.”
“Oh.” Despite having lived in Gensokyo for many years, there were still some aspects of it that he had trouble wrapping his head around. He picked up the knife and stood up.
Mokou looked around and sighed. “You’re really set on saving the kids, aren’t you?”
Joshua slid the knife back into its sheath. Then he looked up into Mokou’s eyes. “Yes,” he said. “I am.”
“Fuck,” Mokou muttered. “If I send you back you’ll just get snapped up. Gods only know how you made it this far.” She shook her head and sighed. “Fine, fine. Tag along if you must, but stay out of my way, don’t slow me down, don’t do anything stupid, and as much as I like you, if it comes down to either saving you or saving the kids, I’ll be sure to say something nice at your funeral. Got it?”
Harsh, but completely fair. “I understand.”
“Fine.” Mokou turned and headed off. “Keep up, then. Rumia and Kohta went off on their own to search as well, so we have to find them too.”
Joshua stumbled. “Wait, they did what?”
“You heard me! Now shut up and keep up!”
…
“Okay,” Kohta panted as he leaned up against a tree. “I think…I think we lost him.”
The effort of trying to catch her breath had bent Rumia down over her knees. “You think?” she got out between gasps.
“Well…he hasn’t…caught us…has he?”
“Maybe…maybe he’s…in the trees…and…” Something tickled Rumia’s ear. “Stop touching me!”
“I’m not.”
“Then…what was…”
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
The two children froze.
Crunch. Crunch. Rip. Snap.
“Is that it?” Rumia whispered. “Is it coming?”
“I don’t…it doesn’t really sound like footsteps.” Kohta tried to straighten up, but then suddenly jerked back. “Hey!”
“Huh?”
“I’m stuck! Something’s sticking to me!”
Something tickled Rumia’s ear again. She slapped it away.
Her hand was suddenly filled with several silky, sticky strands.
“Uh…” She pulled it away from her head. In her hand was something thinner than paper and glistening white.
She then slowly looked up to where Kohta was still trying to free himself from the trunk of the tree. The tree was covered with the stuff, like a paper sheathe.
“Kohta, stop,” Rumia whispered.
“What?”
“Look…up.”
Catching her tone, Kohta swallowed and obeyed.
The entire forest around them was draped with what looked like a silk net. It covered the tree trunks, it was laid across the tree branches, it was even laid across the forest floor in places. Here and there things that looked like giant moth cocoons hung from the branches. One or two of them were twitching. Most of them were not.
Rumia felt the blood drain from her face. Those were no cocoons.
“Webs,” Kohta said hoarsely. “Spiderwebs.”
Crunch. Munch. Slurp.
The two children exchanged one brief look. Then Rumia hastily ripped the web from her fingers and seized Kohta’s arm with both hands and yanked with all her might, ripping him free from the trunk.
“We need to-” Kohta started to say.
Crunch.
Something had broken under Rumia’s feet. The two of them looked down.
A half-buried Human skull grinned up at them, webs draped over it like a burial shroud. Rumia’s foot had landed right onto its right eye socket, caving it in.
“Ah!” Rumia was about to run again, but then Kohta’s hands clamped down on her bicep.
“No!” he hissed. “Get a grip! You start running and screaming again, and the spiders will hear us!”
Every instinct in Rumia was screaming for her to completely disregard Kohta’s point and run as fast as she could while screaming as loud as possible.
But she had done that twice already. And each time it had just sent her into an even scarier situation. So she bit back on the screams she felt rising and slowly removed her foot from within the skull.
Then they turned in the direction of the sounds. Up ahead was a ring of web-covered trees, and within seemed to be a small clearing.
The sounds were coming from the clearing, and between the web-covered trees she could see movement.
Rumia and Kohta exchanged a glance. Then, gripping tightly to each other’s hands, they crept toward the clearing, careful to avoid the webbing on the ground and anything that might be another pile of remains.
The clearing was playing host to a ghastly scene. The whole place was draped with webs, and weirdly enough there was furniture scattered about. Rumia saw a bookshelf filled with what looked like odd trinkets and weird bones; a hat stand holding a top hat, a bonnet, a straw hat, and a weird thing that looked like a stripy inverted funnel; a grandfather clock; a few easy chairs; a cabinet holding chipped tea cups; and four beds. Strapped to four of the trees along the perimeter was a child, each of their bodies partially wrapped up like decaying mummies. Rumia’s heart skipped a beat. Keine was among them, her face pale and her body limp. Rumia couldn’t tell if she was breathing or not.
Fastened to another tree was Kana, who for once was silent. And next to her was Haruko, and next to Haruko was Hayate.
Unlike the others, Haruko was wide awake and staring. Her mouth was gagged with webs to keep her from screaming, but judging by the look in her eyes she would if she could. She was staring at what was happening in the center of the clearing.
There, the four spider-youkai that had attacked the Children’s Home were gathered. Now that Rumia saw them up close, they seemed even more monstrous than they had when viewed at a distance in the bright sunlight. They seemed to be the kin of that slender thing in the woods, with limbs that were twisted, elongated, and malformed, with twice as many joints than they ought to have. Their necks were longer than they had any right to be, and their grey hair almost looked like spiderwebs themselves. Two of them were wearing torn and filthy dresses, one that once had been white with blue stripes and the other a color that might have been orange once. Another had on a long, red coat over a shredded black shirt and a black skirt. The one male had on the remains of what had once been tailored black slacks, a black vest hanging unbuttoned over a filthy white shirt, and a grey tie hanging loosely around his neck like a noose.
All four of them were paying little attention to their ensnared captives. They were crouching on their haunches around a dinner table, tearing at something with their hands and mouths. Rumia couldn’t make out what it was, but she caught glimpses of something red. One of the spider-youkai raised its head. Blood was running down its gaunt face, and there was something white and stringy hanging from its mouth. It gulped it down and ducked its head back down again.
Then a human arm flopped out of the cluster. It was wearing a black sleeve, and a pale hand hung limply at its end. Blood ran down the fingers to drip to the ground.
Rumia’s hand went to her mouth. By process of elimination there really was only one person that could be.
Eiko.
“Oh my gods,” Kohta whispered, so low that even Rumia barely heard him. “Oh my gods, oh my gods, oh my gods.”
As for Rumia, she didn’t have the stomach even for whispered curses. Sour nausea twisted up her gut, and she was able to keep from retching by constantly reminding herself that the spiders would hear the noise and eat them as well.
The two of them had never liked Eiko. She had been whiny and nosy and pretty mean most of the time, always doing whatever Haruko had told her to do, always butting into their business and helping push around the smaller kids.
But sweet spirits, nobody had ever, even in their darkest, most private fantasies, wished something like that upon her!
If there was one blessing that could be gleaned by the whole terrible scene, it was that the four spider-youkai were so absorbed with feasting on poor Eiko’s remains that they were paying no attention to either their remaining captives or the two invaders that had trespassed on their nest.
It was time.
Rumia knelt down to spit out the wad of saliva her nausea had produced and swallowed back as much of the sick feeling as she could. Then she tugged on Kohta’s sleeve and angled her head toward where the other kids were being held.
Kohta’s eyes went wide and he emphatically shook his head.
Baring her teeth, Rumia pointed to where Keine was hanging. Then she pointed at the gruesome feast.
Kohta’s face twisted up as the impulse to flee joined forces with the sheer terror surging through him and waged war on his desire to save his friends. In the end the latter won out, and he let out a small sigh through his nostrils and nodded.
The two of them crept around the clearing, careful not to step on anything too loud, especially careful not to keep glancing over at what the spiders were doing, but it was difficult.
Fortunately, the other kids weren’t fully cocooned like the other bodies they had seen. They only had a couple silk restraints splattered onto their wrists and calves, pinning them to the tree trunks. Webs were also smeared over their mouths as gags, though the spiders had left their eyes free, probably to make them watch.
The first that they reached was Hayate, unfortunately. Rumia and Kohta produced the knives they had brought along and went to work. The webs were strong enough to keep her from tearing away on her own strength, but they parted like grass beneath the steel blades. The enchantments were working.
Hayate seemed to have passed out, but after they managed to free one leg and one hand she began to stir. She didn’t look at all well though. Even with the tremendous scare of what she had been through, her skin felt cold and clammy. Even in the pale moonlight Rumia could see dark veins on her arms and around her neck.
As they worked to bring her down, Rumia glanced at the other kids. Haruko, the only one still awake, had noticed them. She was staring with wide eyes, her hands twitching beneath the webs. She glanced quickly at what the spiders were doing to her friend and then back at them, silently begging them to hurry.
As Rumia and Kohta lowered Hayate to the ground, she started to come around. Rumia started to cut away the gag, but then Kohta covered her hand and shook his head. For a moment Rumia was confused, but then she understood. Hayate was going to be confused and scared when she woke up, and if she screamed, that was it for all of them.
Sure enough, Hayate opened her eyes moments later. She blinked groggily and squinted up at them. She frowned in bewilderment, as if she had no memory of where she was or why she was there.
But then enough pieces apparently pieced themselves together in her mind and her eyes suddenly bulged out.
“Shhh!” Rumia slapped a hand over Hayate’s gagged mouth to prevent any sound from escaping. “Quiet!” she hissed into the terrified girl’s ear. “We’re here to save you, but you have to be quiet!”
Hayate was trembling violently, but she managed a slight nod.
Hoping that she would keep her word, Rumia and Kohta then turned their attention to the next bound captive, which thankfully was Keine.
Keine also had weird veiny blotches on her skin, but she started stirring more quickly when Rumia and Kohta touched her. They hastily cut the sticky strands away and brought her down to the ground.
“Keine!” Kohta whispered. “Can you hear me?”
Keine sleepily blinked her eyes. She moaned beneath her gag.
“Shhh!” Kohta put his face right in front of hers so that she would be able to read his lips. Don’t say anything. Youkai are near. Stay still and quiet.
Keine blinked. Then she stiffened as the memories caught up with her. She glanced at him and Rumia and nodded as well. However, she did sit up and throw her arms around the two of them, and they did the same. Though she was still tense with fear and revulsion, Rumia finally felt a small bit of hope. They had gotten Keine back. They weren’t out of the woods yet, but they at least had her.
Keine, at least, could be trusted. She angled her head to one side and let her friends cut away her gag. Once it was out of the way she started clawing at her mouth and silently gagged as she tried to get rid of any remaining strands. One particularly large wad made her shiver with disgust.
Rumia caught sight of Hayate staring at them. Once she had Rumia’s eye, the other girl pointed at the wad of silk covering her mouth. Rumia shook her head. Hayate blinked, then she scowled and let out an angry snort.
Two down, two to go. And the next was the one that they wanted to save the least. Still, there were some things that even blood feuds were suspended for.
Haruko had been watching the whole time. As they approached, the only two fingers she had free started to rapidly beat against the tree trunk.
“Stop it!” Rumia hissed. “Do you want them to-”
“Oi!”
One of the spiders suddenly turned toward Haruko, his neck curving around like a snake. Rumi and Kohta ducked out of sight.
“Stop makin’ dat noise!” the spider growled, his voice thick and gummy. “If yer so impatient, den it’ll be yer turn once we’re done wit’ yer itty-bitty friend ‘ere!”
The other spiders laughed, and they all went back to their meal.
Rumia forced herself to release the breath she had been holding. Her heart was still pounding away like a war drum though.
Baring her teeth, she set back to work, cutting away at Haruko’s left hand and leg while Kohta worked on her right side.
Once she was free, Haruko had no problem with being led behind the tree and out of sight. She immediately threw both arms around Kohta’s shoulders and squeezed him tight while she hyperventilated.
Rumia’s right eye twitched, but she did nothing.
Kohta winced but tolerated it, though Rumia suspected that was more due to no wanting to risk attracting attention than respecting Haruko’s feelings.
“Okay, okay,” Kohta muttered with an awkward pat on the bat. “Um, you gotta let go. Seriously. I need to go help Kana. Let go, please.”
Rumia rolled her eyes. Then she saw that Hayate was up on her knees and was slowly crawling toward Haruko, her hands outstretched and tears pouring from her eyes.
That should work. Rumia took her by the elbow and helped her come in closer. Then she jostled Haruko’s shoulder to get her attention. Once Haruko saw that Hayate was near, she immediately abandoned Kohta to seize her remaining friend in another squeezing embrace, and unlike Kohta, Hayate was more than happy to reciprocate.
Kohta shook his head and sighed. Then he caught the look Rumia was shooting him.
What? he mouthed.
Rolling her eyes, Rumia just went over to where Kana was hanging.
The weird girl looked like she was the worst off. The dark veins were more pronounced on her skin, and she was sweating profusely. What was more, she didn’t stir at all when Rumia and Kohta started working to free her.
Rumia swallowed. She prayed to whatever meager gods that would hear her that Kana was still alive and kept cutting.
The girl barely seemed to weigh a thing as they took her to the others and laid her down. Keine, who seemed to have shaken off whatever the spiders had done to her quicker than the still tearfully embracing Haruko and Hayate, knelt down at Kana’s side. She leaned over to place her ear against Kana’s chest while holding a finger under her nose. Rumia held her breath as she waited for the diagnosis.
Keine sat back and nodded. She held up a hand with her index finger and her thumb only a few centimeters apart. Rumia and Kohta understood. Kana was breathing, but only just. They needed to get her back as quickly as possible.
Kohta crouched down and lifted Kana onto his back. He nodded to the others and tilted his head back the way he and Rumia had come. They started to creep away, but then Hayate seized Rumia by the arm. She jabbed a finger at the web still covering her mouth.
Oh, fine. Rumia pulled out her knife and went to work cutting it away. Like the others, Hayate gagged as she spat out all the gunk in her mouth.
“All right,” Rumia whispered. “Now let’s go!”
Hayate looked at her like she had lost her mind. “No!” she whispered back. “What about Eiko? We can’t leave Eiko!”
Rumia felt like she had been kicked in the gut. Oh gods, Hayate had passed out before Eiko had been eaten. She didn’t know!
Seeing the way everyone was looking at her, Hayate just stared back in confusion. “What? Why are you guys-”
“Welp, dis one’s ‘bout done,” one of the spiders said suddenly. “Onta da second course!”
“All right, all right, keep yer pants on. Which one?”
“Betta make it da ‘ickle blonde bit. She dun’t look like she got much left in ‘er, so we’d bedda get ‘er on da table while she’s still fresh.”
Oh shit.
“Go, go, go!” Kohta whispered.
The hurried away, with Haruko practically dragging the still-confused Hayate along.
“Hey, da fook?” a spider called out. “Where’d da ‘ickle morsels go?”
“Are ya fookin’ serious? Dey was jus’ dere!”
“Well, dey ain’t now!”
“Damn it all. Spread out and search! Dey couldn’t ‘ave gone far!”
The horrible sound of scrabbling filled the air. The children increased their gait.
Then a horribly long arm snaked out of the trees in front of them. It ended in a slender hand with fingers that looked as long as Rumia’s forearms, each topped by a pointed nail caked with dirt and drying blood.
The hand planted itself on the ground, the elbow bending at an unnatural angle. Another such arm came into view, the hand grabbing onto a tree trunk.
A gaunt face followed, one with hollow cheeks, a pointed chin, and dark hair that hung around the face like a funeral shroud. The face’s eyes were sunken and dark, each with four tiny white pupils that glimmered like candles in the dark. Dark blood still was smeared around its pale lips.
The face swung around on its elongated neck to leer at the children. “Well, well, well, what have we ‘ere?” the spider said as she ambled out of the clearing. “A wee ‘ickle rescue attempt? ‘ey, chaps! C’mere!”
The other spiders ambled their way toward her, one loping his way on the ground while the other two crawled across the trees. “You ‘ave got ta’ be fookin’ kiddin’ me,” growled the male spider.
“Nah, see? Dey missed deir friends so much dat dey come ‘ere ta’ try ta’ save ‘em! Ain’t dey precious?”
“Precious ‘ickle dumplin’s,” growled another. “So kind dey are. Now we ‘ave enough for breakfast an’ dinner tummarah!”
Rumia couldn’t move. Fear had frozen her feet in place. She couldn’t even blink. All she could do was stand stiff and still and stare as the four malformed monsters crawled ever closer.
This is it, she found herself thinking. This is how I die. Ripped apart like my family. And I still couldn’t save anyone. What a stupid way to go.
Then some blue and glowing shot through the air to splash against the lead spider’s cheek.
The one that had been hit flinched back. She held a claw to the point of impact. “Da fook was…”
Then everyone, spider and child alike, turned to stare at the culprit.
Haruko was standing with one hand outstretched, index and middle fingers pointing out, while she held onto her wrist with the other hand. Every centimeter of her was shaking with fear, but it was clear that she had been the one responsible.
“You can shoot bullets?” Kohta said in disbelief.
Haruko glanced at him and nodded. Then she inhaled sharply and fired another blue projectile.
This one glanced off the spider’s shoulder. This time, she looked more annoyed than anything. “Really?” she growled. “Fookin’ danmaku. Sorry, chitlins. But youz is playin’ a grown-up’s game.” She lifted a hand, which then began glowing purple. “But if it’s a danmaku battle yah be wantin’, den Auntie Edna is more than ‘appy to play!”
Before Edna could fire off her first round, Kohta let go of one of Kana’s legs to thrust his hand into his pocket. When he drew it back out, it was holding onto a small piece of paper.
“Uh, hit the deck!” he screamed as he tossed the paper forward. Then he threw both himself and Kana to the ground and covered his eyes. Everyone else did the same. Even the spiders flinched back in anticipation of the spellcard attack.
Nothing happened.
Rumia looked up. The spellcard was lying on the ground, obviously not activated. The spiders, who had all retreated back and covered their faces, were now lowering their arms and glancing at one another.
“Huh,” the male said. Then the four of them leered back down at the children. “Well den.”
“You idiot!” Hayate screamed. “You have to say the spellcard’s name!”
“Huh? Oh, right!” Kohta snatched the card back up and thrust it forward again as the spiders resumed their advance. “Phoenix Sign: Magnificent Inferno!”
And then the forest erupted with light.
…
I have a new policy. If I get an idea that would certainly have upset and disturbed kid me, I do it.
Until next time, everyone.

Hello everyone! Yui here, with today’s special feature, DDLitG Behind the Scenes: What’s the deal with Ako?
In this special update we’ll talk about her character in general, design, her place in the story, and more! So get comfortable in your seat, get yourself some good snacks, and let’s delve into the background of DDLitG’s 1st-ish original character~
Who is Ako?
Ako, formerly known as “female student”, was originally one of the many NPCs used by the game’s engine to fill its world with nondescript background characters, so as to make it feel less empty. However, Sayori took a special interest in her, and decided to befriend her, following the steps of a young MC who befriended Sayori in a similar situation and ended up saving her life. This would in turn allow Ako to grow as a character beyond her 1 line of coding and get her own sprites, as well as being able to interact with the world. She would later go on to fall in love with Sayori and shenanigans ensue.
Ako was created with the purpose of telling the story of the Friendship arc.
Designing Ako.
Let me make one thing clear: I’m not a character designer. I don’t know jack about it besides the very basics. But I did try to make someone who looked mildly original and, most importantly, different from the other girls.
Originally, she was going to be the image of a shy, fragile girl who Sayori befriended out of pity, more than anything. Based on this initial idea, I made this beta Ako design on one of my copybooks when I should’ve been working:
As you can see, her very first sprite was the one where she’s shyly looking away to avoid eye contact (and to seem annoying, but more on that later). I was happy with the pose but not with her face, as it looked super unoriginal. She resembled Ochako Uraraka from My Hero Academia a bit too much, so I tried to change her hair to make her stand out more. Here is her second iteration:
This time, I felt like I cranked it up too much to the other side. Now she stood out TOO much. Her hair felt like it came more from a protagonist than someone who’s supposed to be a background character. I adopted a new philosophy after seeing this result: she had to look as bland as possible. She had to be the kind of character you see all the time in the background of an anime - those simple, unassuming designs you’d never look twice at because you’re too focused on the protagonists with candy-coloured hair. In DDLitG’s canon she’s a filler NPC brought to the forefront, and her design had to reflect that more than my desire to make her look “cool”.
With this in mind, we come to Ako v0.3
As you can see, this is much closer to her current design. But this was still a sketch (even the drawing above is very much unfinished). As you can see, I got closer to her 0.1 version with the hair, but changed the eyes to make them look more unique, giving her that more neutral, “nothing” expression. Having finally found some ground I was comfortable with, I redefined her design a little further, gave her some more details around the hair and clothes, adjusted the proportions of her body (because apparently I draw heads huge), and made her finalized design.
I was happy.
What’s with this sassy... monochrome child?
If there’s one constant to be found in the pictures above, is that she was always meant to be black and white. There are plenty of reasons, which I’ll list because, honestly, there are a lot.
1. I didn’t want to look her like the rest of the cast at fucking all. She is an OC introduced in a story with already established characters made by a much more talented writer. She’s an outsider, someone who doesn’t belong with this cast of colorful characters, and I wanted readers to be able to tell that at first glance. No, she’s not like the other girls. They don’t belong in the same place. She is not a member of the original DDLC cast, and it shows.
2. I know I can’t draw as well as Satchely, so trying to copy DDLC’s art style would just end up looking awkward and wrong. I had no choice but to do my own thing. And if I’m doing my own thing, why not take it all the way? I already gave myself artistic freedom, I might as well go crazy with it~
3. I just adore characters in a fictional universe that look different from the rest of the cast or have some strange design choice for literally no reason. Like Krillin from Dragonball, with his eyes that make him look like he belongs in an entirely different manga...
...or even Jotaro Kujo, whose hat merges with his hair because why not!
I live for dumb crap like that.
4. A huuuuuge inspiration for me while writing (besides my own uninteresting life) is music. Many times I listen to a specific track or imagine situations with specific background music to make them seem more real, and be able to better portray the feelings of a scene when writing [For example, I listened to My Chemical Romance’s Welcome to the Black Parade a lot while writing Monika’s Death].
Ako’s creation was no exception. Her appearance was partially based on the cover for not only one of my favorite Vocaloid albums of all time, but one of my favorite albums period: Wowaka’s glorious Unhappy Refrain.
I’ve been writing stuff based on this album alone for years because it’s just so damn striking to me. The picture of the faceless schoolgirl falling into the unseen abyss, the background uninterested characters that imply they are used to seeing fellow girls suffer, the distorted world they live in, the album’s way to explore teenage depression, the freaking name of the album, EVERYTHING! IT’S SUCH A GOOD EXPLORATION OF THE DIFFICULT LIFE TEENS FACE THAT OFTEN GOES UNNOTICED!! AAAAAAHHHH IT’S SO GOOD.
5. Ako was also based on a previous design I made for another character meant for an original visual novel I was writing and I’m probably never going to finish, who was also going to be monochromatic to reference this album (in that context it made more sense though cuz every character was a musical reference).
This character, in turn, was based on Monoko from Yume Nikki, which is more obvious because of her crying eye and extra arm.
So basically at this point it would’ve been weird if I hadn’t made her monochromatic.
Naming Ako
This was one of the most difficult parts, ngl.
As I mentioned, Ako was originally going to be a fragile, shy girl. Based on this, her original name during the design face was Moromi, which is one more letter than “Moroi”, which Google translate promises me means “Brittle” or “Fragile” in Japanese.
However, after the philosophy change that happened during her conceptual stage, “Fragility” was no longer at the core of her character, as it was now “Nothingness/Blandness”. Because of this, I changed her name to “Ako”.
Many people have submitted their interpretations of the name, ranging from its meaning “To teach/to learn”, and “To yearn for”, which all fit better than the original tbh.
The intended meaning is for “Ako” to be read as “A-Ko”, which is a way by which Japenese media often refers to filler characters, as it translates to “Girl A”.
Examples of this can be seen in Super Danganronpa 2, where a character in a videogame is called “A-Ko” to hide their identity...
...and in a movie called “Project A-ko”, which was a parody of the anime tropes from the time, so they gave the protagonist the most generic name ever. The antagonist and side character, by the way, are called “B-Ko” and “C-Ko” respectively. This movie is fucking awesome.
This name also made sense in the context of the story, because we already had a character named “Student A”, so this goes to show that the game just gave Ako the default name it had stored for female NPCs.
Blinded Ako, or How I Learned to Convey Emotion Through Ahegao
When I came up with Ako, she was meant to have most of her character revolving around her infatuation with Sayori. She was, after all, written in the story with the purpose of falling in love with her, and nothing else. Her character, personality, likes/dislikes, and hobbies came afterwards. As the story progressed, however, I decided that she should have a personality separate from just being in love with another character. So to separate the actions she committed under the influence of her passion, I did a little design change in the middle of the arc: Blinded Ako.
In this version, Ako has been literally blinded by love and stops being rational. This is represented by the hearts covering her eyes, and clouding her judgement. This was done not only with the purpose of representing she was past her breaking point, but also to differentiate the Ako that makes mistakes with the Ako that was introduced in the beginning of the arc. Almost so as to make them two different characters, so when she is reintroduced as a regular character after Friendship, readers could think “oh, she’s not going to do dumb stuff again, she’s not blinded by love anymore.”
Many people compared the above panel with “ahegao”, a trope in hentai manga where a character does a silly face to represent them breaking from enjoying themselves so much. This was done partially on purpose. The main idea was to represent Ako being blinded by her infatuation for Sayori, not to equate her sate of being with anything sexual. It DID end up looking more hentai-esque than I expected though, as, well, Ako is in black and white, and the heart eyes are also a trope in ahegao. And she’s sweating. And she’s saying that she’s about to break....
.....
....well at least I drove my point home.
Ako’s musical influences
Above I mentioned how music was a big part of my inspiration, and how I listened to Welcome to the Black Parade while writing Monika’s Death, so the question in no one’s mind is: what music did Yui use as inspiration for Ako’s character and the arc? 🤔
Well, hypothetical reader, the answer is that since Ako was meant to be bland and flavour-free, her original depiction is not based on a song or anything. Her desperation towards Sayori and Blinded Ako, though, are based on TRONICBOX’s 80′s style remix of Ariana Grande’s Into You. And yes, this 80′s remix in specific. Not the original song. I highly encourage you to give it a listen and pay attention to the lyrics if you want an insight into how Ako was feeling during her breaking point.
youtube
Also, as a side note, no one has asked me this, but I imagine Ako’s voice to sound like the vocals of Panty and Stocking’s ending, Fallen Angel. It’s a truly beautiful song, and once again, I highly encourage you to give it a listen and pay attention tot he lyrics if you want an insight in Ako’s current feelings towards Sayori.

Ako’s reception
This is more something personal than an explanation of the character, but it’s something I want to share nonetheless.
Remember when I said Ako was meant to be annoying? Yeah... xD
When I decided to add a new character I did so under the idea that everyone was going to hate her, because it’s a purposefully boring OC made by some insane person with the sole purpose of being added to an already interesting and loved cast of characters just to fuck everything up.
The first scene I ever wrote for Ako was the part where Monika asked if she had hurt Sayori, and she said “Not intentionally...” while looking away, which is why her first sprite ever was in that position. She was meant to make people feel frustrated over this girl just looking away from her problems and avoiding responsibility, while also telling Monika to her face that she had done something bad to Sayori. Readers were expected to hate her. That’s why in the beginning she says she doesn’t like literature, to assure you that she’s not joining the literature club. That’s why there’s a scene where she gets punched in the face. That’s why she looks so extremely out of place.
YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DISLIKE HER!! omg I’m still surprised at how warm the reception was, you guys are just too nice for me~ ❤️
Because of the unexpected reception I had to change some parts of the arc, which were originally going to be much crueler towards her [I even questioned adding the punch at all, but it was an important part of Monika’s development so I felt it]. I also established her as a recurring character in spite of her dislike of literature, and did my best to make her less hate-able than she was originally going to be, even cutting some planned lines of dialogue that made her pretty irredeemable. Looking back, I am glad I did those changes, we ended up with a well-liked and pretty nice girl because of it~
Final thoughts
The introduction of Ako and writing Friendship in general was a very intense experience for me. It was very difficult to balance Ako as being both relevant to the story and moving the plot forward, but not make her the sole focus of everything and have her obscure everyone else, because OCs in established pieces of media tend to do that.
This arc also got a LOT of mixed reviews, some people liking it, some hating everything I did. This made me really question what I was doing and at many points even regret I was writing Friendship at all. At a certain point I lost almost 50 followers in a single update.
I also had trouble writing some parts because they were too sad. And that’s not my style! I like writing happy people being good friends, damn it, not everyone crying and hating each other.
But when all is said and done, I’m happy I wrote both Friendship and Ako into the story. I’ve received many wonderful, supportive messages telling me how much readers enjoyed it. Even some people saying they had been in a similar situation to the one depicted in the story, and were glad to see a story that showed a positive outcome.
Will I write more OCs into DDLitG?
Meh, who knows. I love writing more original stuff and expanding the world of DDLitG, but I also feel like if I introduce yet another OC, people will crucify me and hate me for flooding the story with too much stuff that’s irrelevant to the DDLC they’re used to. That being said, writing this blog is my first, and very possibly last chance to expose my stories to such a large audience. And seeing people like what you do not only because you’re riding the coattails of a recognizable brand, but because they like what you do with it, makes me pretty darn happy. Being completely honest, I’d like to add another character. But just one. And only if it’s something that will push both the story and the girls’ character arcs forward. Not just adding OCs for the sake of it.
Thanks for sticking until the end of this BTS, and I hope you found it an enjoyable read, or at the very least I made you a little bit less bored~ ❤️

SSSS.Dynazenon – 11 – Neon Genesis Ordinarion
The Eugenicists wake up lying in a parking lot, and immediately realize they’ve lost once again to Gauma and his human comrades. Only this time, their loss apparently means something: there will be no more kaiju in this world, which means they’ve lost to him for good. Mujina, Juuga and Onija all go off in separate directions to sulk, but only Shizumu stays put, looking the least defeated and very much like someone who knows something the other three don’t.
Meanwhile, with the final battle against the Eugenicists won, Koyomi starts to draw upon the change he gained since becoming a Dyna-Pilot, by crafting his resume and dusting off his old suit. Chise can only stand there with potato chip crumbs on her face in quiet recognition that Koyomi was going to abandon his NEEThood eventually. And in the most telling sign that we’re entering a new normal, Gauma seems to be suffering from a chronic wasting disease, complete with purple marks on his skin.
Free of much of her grief and uncertainty, Yume apologizes to Kano’s ex, surprising Mei, while also playfully refusing to let Mei submit a photo of her for a competition. Chise follows Koyomi’s lead and dons her sailor fuku, hoping to return to school with Goldburn flying overhead watching her. Only Gridknight and Second show depart with Goldburn, as kaiju like them don’t belong in the normal world.
Chise knew this would happen, but still doesn’t get why, and she and Goldburn flee. Juuga seeks out Gauma, apparently to intentionally receive a beating, commenting on how little Gauma’s blows hurt. Yume and Yomogi learn that Gauma’s “Princess” took her life after he died, Romeo & Juliet style, but only he was revived. Then Gauma collects their Dynazenon toys.
Koyomi already gave him his and went straight to a photo booth for some somewhat professional-looking headshots. Mujina stops by to tell him she despises him…but does she really mean it?
While looking at an article about 5,000-year-old mirror that “went missing”, Yume leans close enough to Yomogi’s phone to make him blush, then asks him if he’ll come with her “somewhere” tomorrow. That somewhere ends up being Kano’s grave, which she’s never visited before but feels it’s time to visit now. Like Koyomi, she’s taking steps forward.
In a way, Yomogi does the same when he doesn’t budge on blowing off dinner with his mom and her fiance—with an assist from his gran. Mom can be as cross as she likes with him, but she should be happy he has a genuine connection with someone that’s become far more meaningful than his other school friends considering all they’ve been through together and done for each other.
What ensues is a grave visit that feels like a date. It’s jubilant rather than morose in the way a lively wake can often be. She’s there to visit, tidy up, and pray to her family and sister’s grave, but she’s also there to bury the Yume she became after Kano’s death. Part of that is embracing Yomogi as a friend and kindred spirit, as she learns he has it as “tough” as she in the parental department—maybe worse.
That night, while walking home, Yume mentions how no more kaiju and no more Dynazenon or uniting goal means everyone might drift apart into their own stuff. As she so eloquently puts it, “We fought kaiju and stuff, but it was the closest to normal my life’s ever been.” Of course, she’s not talking about the kaiju-robot battles, but all of the things that happened in between that brought everyone closer together and changed them all for the better.
Yomogi stops, looks slightly downward then directly at Yume, and firmly assures Yomogi that kaiju or no, Dynazenon or no, he still wants to see her. Then he says he likes her and asks her to go out with him, which is, I believe, a reasonable request. Yume seems poised to answer him immediately, and while I was bracing for a “no”, instead the moment is interrupted by Shizumu.
Predictably with two episodes left, the fight isn’t over, and Shizumu hasn’t lost for good either. The thanks both Yume and Yomogi for all of the emotions they gave off in the times they were together, particularly now. He’s thanking them for this because, as we see, there’s a kaiju inside him, which he’s been saving as a last resort in case Gauma and Dynazenon got the better of him and the others.
He has no qualms about rushing Yomogi with the intent to harm and even kill him, but Gauma rushes in at the last second to take the blow for Yomogi. It’s likely the only blow he’ll be able to take against Shizumu, considering his rapidly regrading condition, but thankfully Gridknight, Second, and even Goldburn come to their aid.
Shizumu uses Instance Domination on himself, summoning a big beautiful chortling mega-dinosaur robot of a kaiju, and immediately starts wrecking up the place with abandon.
Even though Gauma says a hospital can’t do anything about the “decay” quickly consuming him, Yomogi still won’t allow him to just lie there and die, and Second helps carry him. Gridknight combines with Goldburn to form Super Dragon King Kaiser Gridknight, but Shizumu proceeds to mop the floor with him, leveling many a multi-use block in the process.
As he strolls through flames like one of the God Warriors of the Seven Days of Fire that destroyed the world of yore in Nausicaa, our ordinary heroes are once again tasked with uniting to achieve extraordinary feats. I’m as glad Yomogi finally told Yume he liked her as I’m bummed Shizumu kept us from hearing her answer (whatever it was).
Those offsetting emotions, along with the fact this was merely the setup for the final showdown, kept this week’s score out of the stratosphere, but it was still full of great, mundane, everyday scenes and sounds, and while I’m looking forward to the animators outdoing themselves in the decisive battle, I hope the finale doesn’t abandon that vital “normalness” that’s made both Dynazenon and Gridman before it so rich and absorbing.
Yes, despite its often absurd and fantastical situations, Dynazenon still manages to feel like home—a home I know I’ll miss when it departs.
