The singing died off quickly the moment she looked over and saw you staring at her, she could only see a pair of eyes from the shaded spot you were hiding in.
There was an awkward silence as she looked rather startled that you found her, her expression changed again, realizing what she must of done, it looked like she felt a bit guilty for luring you in unintentionally.

The History of Korean Female Soloists from the 20th Century: Episode 1/?
The inaugural episode of 'The History of Korean Female Soloists from the 20th Century' is now underway, focusing on renowned Korean artists who gained prominence during the early 20th century amid Japanese occupation.
The available information on these artists varies significantly, as they were active nearly a century ago, prior to the Korean War, which contributed to the loss or scarcity of historical records.
Kim So Hee (김소희;金素姬)
In Part 4 of 'The History of Korean Male Groups,' I made a brief reference to Kim So-hee, who was associated with the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station (JODK) (경성방송국). Since I have previously discussed this broadcasting station, I will not elaborate extensively but will provide a concise overview here.
Kim So-hee (김소희; 金素姬), originally named Kim Soon-ok (김순옥; 金順玉), was born on December 1, 1917, in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, during the era of Japanese colonial rule. She gained immense recognition as a distinguished pansori vocalist, earning the title of national singer and being designated as a national intangible cultural asset. Under her pen name, Man-jeong (만정; 晩汀), she was actively involved in the Joseon Vocal Music Research Association and the Hwarang Changgeuk Troupe, ultimately achieving legendary status as a significant cultural figure of her time.

At the age of twelve, she began her vocal training with the renowned singer Song Man-gap (宋萬甲), accompanied by her father, Kim Bong-ho (김봉호) and also learned traditional songs and sijo (時調) from Jeon Gye-mun (全桂文). Following her graduation from Heungdeok Public Elementary School, she developed a deep appreciation for "Chuwolmanjeong" (秋月滿庭) by Lee Hwa-jung-seon (李花中仙) during her time at Jeonnam Girls' High School while staying with her older sister in Gwangju, which led her to enroll in Song Man-gap's school in 1929. In the late 1920s, while serving as a boy gisaeng (童妓) within the Joseon Gwonbeon (朝鮮券番), she acquired knowledge of female vocal styles and lyrics, ultimately gaining recognition as a prominent girl singer. Her performances were featured on the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station (경성방송국; 京城放送局), and she recorded her work for an album.
In the 1930s, she acquired knowledge of the initial segment of the five Madang of pansori and engaged in recording and broadcasting activities. Her tenure at the Gyeongseong Broadcasting Station spanned from 1927 to 1942, during which she performed a variety of pieces, including "Gangsanpungwol" (江山風月),"Gyerak" (界樂), and numerous folk songs such as "Yukjabaeki" and "Chunhyangga." Kim So-hee made her debut on the station on December 29, 1931, where she showcased the nundae sections of "Sugungga," "Simcheongga," "Jeokbyeokga," and "Chunhyangga." Each broadcast featured her renditions of short songs like "Gangsangpungwol," "Geongonga" (乾坤歌), and "Jangbuga" (丈夫歌). Throughout the Japanese colonial era, she recorded a total of 54 albums with various record labels, including four with Columbia, thirty with Orkeh, and twenty with Vikta.

Life and Career
Kim So-hee's entry into the art world began after her graduation from Gwangju Girls’ High School, now known as Jeonnam Girls’ High School  (全南女子高等學校). At the age of 13, she was deeply moved by a performance of 'Lee Hwa-jung and Her Party' at a tent theatre. A connection through her maternal grandmother's adopted daughter's husband, who was affiliated with the police, led her mother to meet Mr. Song Man-gap. During this meeting, she performed a line from 'Simcheongga,' and later, in her 50s and 60s, she recorded a complete rendition of 'Simcheongga,' titled 'Chuwolmanjeong (秋月晩汀),' which highlighted her artistic prowess. Upon hearing the emotionally charged melody that began with ‘Chuewol is full of emotion, reflected on the coral curtain, and the geese in the clear sky fly high under the moon, tturu…’, Master Song Man-gap was so moved that he knelt in admiration.
She decided to leave school to focus on her singing career under the guidance of Song Man-gap. Within just six months of training, she made her stage debut as ‘Lee Doryeong’ at a disciple recital and subsequently performed in 'Lee Hwa-jung and her party' across various locations, including Busan and Mokpo. Additionally, she studied seungmu and geommu with Jeong Seong-rin in Jeonju, learned lyrics and songs from Jeon Gye-mun, and trained in yanggeum with Yu Sun-seok in Jeongeup, astonishing her teacher by mastering the intricate details of ‘Yeongsanhoesang’ in merely ten days.

At the age of 14, she entered the inaugural Pansori Master Singer Competition in Namwon, securing first place among approximately 80 participants and earning the title of 'baby master singer.' The silver spoons awarded to her as a prize are now preserved by her daughter, Professor Park Yun-cho.
In the winter of 1931, Kim So-hee moved to Seoul to pursue her singing studies more seriously, residing at her aunt's home in Gwancheol-dong. There, she took an examination with the renowned master Han Seong-jun, who was introduced to her by Song Man-gap. During this period, she learned "Chunhyangga" from Jeong Jeong-ryeol while also making television appearances, performing, and recording.
Around this time, she adopted the stage name Kim So-hee, having been born Kim Ok-hee. She began her pansori training at 15 under Song Man-gap, concentrating on "Simcheongga" and "Heungboga." By the age of 18, her repertoire had grown to include "Chunhyangga" and "Sugungga," which she studied under Jeong Jeong-ryeol. At 22, she advanced her education with Park Dong-sil at Jishilchodang in Nammyeon, with support from Park Seok-gi. Throughout her thirties, Kim So-hee continued to enhance her vocal abilities with esteemed instructors such as Jeong Eung-min, Jeong Gwon-jin, Park Rok-ju, Kim Yeo-ran, and Park Bong-sul
At the age of 16, she expanded her musical education by studying songs and sijo under Jeon Gye-mun (1872-1940) and learned to play the geomungo and yanggeum from Kim Yong-geon. By 17, she had begun her dance training with Jeong Gyeong-rin and subsequently pursued studies in calligraphy and Chinese classics. Notable figures such as An Hyang-ryeon (1944-1981), Han Nong-seon (1934-2002), and several others became her disciples.
Shortly after starting her vocal training with Song Man-gap, she was introduced to Lee Hwa-jung-seon (李花中仙) (1899-1943), who recognized her talent and featured her in a performance at Gwangju Theater that same evening. This pivotal moment led to her joining Lee Hwa-jung-seon's Hyupryulsa, and she achieved first place in the Namwon Master Singer Competition the following year. By 18, she recorded "Simcheongga" and "Jeokbyeokga" for Oke Records and Columbia Records, establishing herself as a prominent young singer, and at 20, she collaborated with other notable artists to record the complete collection of Chunhyangjeon for Big Records.

In February 1936, the establishment of Changgeukjwa as a branch of the Joseon Vocal Music Research Association marked a significant development in her career, as she engaged in changgeuk activities alongside Kang Tae-hong, Kim Se-jun, and Kim Yeon-su. She participated in the opera Bae Bi-jang-jeon (裵裨將傳), performed by the Joseon Vocal Music Research Society from February 9-11, 1936, and took part in a flood relief music competition on August 28-29, 1936. Additionally, she showcased her talents in a renowned singer competition at the Gwangju Theatre on October 16-17, 1938, further solidifying her status in the musical landscape of the time.
On June 11, 1937, she participated in the complete recording of Chunhyang-jeon by the Viktor Gramophone Company, alongside several significant pansori pieces, including the brief song "Gangsangpungwol," which featured janggu accompaniment by Han Seong-jun and was later recorded on Columbia Records in Japan. Collaborations with Kim Deok-jin (haegeum), Sim Sang-geon (gayageum), and Jeong Hae-si (tungso) resulted in numerous songs, including "Godangsang" (高堂上), which were released on Japanese Victa records. Additional recordings, such as "Gisaengjeomgo" (妓生點考), were made with Obi-chui, Shin Sook, and Lee Hwa-jung-seon for Oke records, while "Orijeongibyeol" (五里亭離別) from Chunhyangjeon appeared on the Gunsohaehoe record. She was appointed as a director during the 5th regular general meeting of the Joseon Vocal Music Research Association on May 23, 1938.
On December 24, 1940, she performed at the inaugural show of the Hwarang Changgeuk Troupe, founded by Park Seok-gi at the Jeil Theater, alongside Cho Sang-seon, Han Ju-hwan, and Kim Yeo-ran in productions of Chunhyangjeon, the historical drama "The Bell Sound of Bongdeoksa Temple," and Kim Won-hak's original Changgeuk "Paldamchunmong." Following Korea's liberation in early 1948, she appeared with Seong Won-mok, Gong Gi-nam, and Kim Deuk-su in the performance of "Goguryeo's Hon (魂)," staged by Park Dong-sil, the head of the Gukgeuk Association established in early 1948.

The Korean Traditional Music Women's Association was founded on September 1, 1948, with significant contributions from President Park Nok-ju, Vice-Presidents Kim Yeon-su and Im Yu-aeng, General Affairs Manager Jo Yu-saek, and members including Park Gwi-hee, Han Yeong-sook, and Kim Nong-ju. Their first performance showcased the original Changgeuk "Okjunghwa" (獄中花) at Sigonggwan in October of the same year, followed by "Sunshine and Moonshine," composed by Kim A-bu, which premiered in February 1949. During the Korean War in 1950, she performed "Gayageum," created by Yu Chi-jin, with the Haetnim Gukgeuk Troupe at the Busan Theater, alongside notable performers such as Park Gwi-hee, Jo Nong-wol, and Kang Nam-wol. In 1955, she established the Korean Folk Arts Academy, played a pivotal role in founding the National Gugak Arts School, and served as a pansori instructor from its inception.

At the age of 32, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Women’s Traditional Music Association while actively performing with the Joseon Vocal Music Research Association. Her notable contributions during this period included works such as 〈Okjunghwa〉 and 〈Haetnimdalnim〉. By the age of 38, Kim So-hee, a dedicated advocate for changgeuk, women’s traditional Korean music, and pansori, founded the Folk Arts Institute and became its first director. She maintained a vigorous schedule of performances in traditional Korean music both within the country and abroad, culminating in her receipt of the 4th Gugak Award (Changak Practical Skill Award) from the Gugak Promotion Association in 1959.
In the early 20th century, notable female singers in modern Korean history included Jin Chae-seon, Heo Geum-pa, and Kim Cho-hyang, who were prominent figures in the changgeuk theater. Kang So-chun, recognized as a leading vocalist of Won-gak-sa, also contributed significantly to this era. Lee Hwa-jung-seon is often regarded as a successor to these artists. In contemporary times, the landscape of female singers has expanded to include Kim Nok-ju, Bae Seol-hyang, Shin Geum-hong, and others. Notably, in 1964, Kim So-hee and Park Cho-wol became the first female pansori singers to be recognized as Important Intangible Cultural Properties.

Kim So-hee's musical journey was marked by her exceptional vocal talent and collaborative spirit. She developed close relationships with fellow musicians, including Park Nok-ju and Oh Bi-chwi, and maintained a lifelong friendship with Park Gwi-hee. Her training encompassed a diverse range of traditional arts, learning pansori from esteemed masters such as Song Man-gap and Jeong Eung-min, while also studying classical dance and various string instruments. Advisor Yang Won-seok emphasized the importance of personal interpretation in music, suggesting that true mastery involves integrating distinct styles rather than merely imitating them.
By 1964, she was recognized as the custodian of Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 5, Pansori Chunhyangga. She served as a practical instructor at the Gugak Arts School, which commenced on March 5, 1960. In the same year, she participated in the inaugural changgeuk Daechunhyangjeon performance alongside Kim Yeon-su and fellow members Park Gwi-hee, Kang Jang-won, and Kang Jong-cheol, organized by the National Gugak Company of Korea to celebrate its establishment. Additionally, in 1962, she performed at the 9th International Festival of Folk Arts in Paris and later toured the United States with the Samcheolli Dance Troupe in 1964. Her accolades include first prize at the Namwon Chunhyang Festival Folk Arts Competition (1931), the 4th National Gugak Award (1959), the World Broadcasting Award (1962), the Literature and Arts Promotion Award (1972), the Order of Civil Merit, Dongbaek Medal (1973), the 1st Korean Traditional Music Award (1982), the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (1984), the Namwon City Arts and Culture Award (1987), the 1st Dongri Grand Prize (1987), and the 1st Bangil British Music Award (1994).

Notably, Kim So-hee, a prominent figure in this art form, collaborated with drummer Han Seong-jun to produce significant recordings, including those of "Chunhyangga" and "Simcheongga," which are regarded as masterpieces. In 1964, Kim was honoured as the holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property for "Chunhyangga," a testament to her exceptional talent. Her rendition of "Chunhyangga" reflects a carefully reconstructed manjeongje, characterized by a naturally gifted voice that is both clear and beautiful. Kim's singing style is marked by elegance and restraint, avoiding excessive emotional extremes while maintaining a delicate approach. Through her training with esteemed teachers, she adeptly synthesized various elements to create a unique interpretation of "Chunhyangga," embodying the distinctive qualities of both eastern and western musical traditions.
Kim So-hee's career spanned from 1929 to 1994, during which she distinguished herself as a master singer and was honored with the title of national singer. Her contributions to the art of pansori are significant, particularly through her establishment of the Manjeongje pansori style, which emphasized elegance and sophistication. She played a pivotal role in advancing traditional Korean music, notably by co-founding the Women’s Traditional Korean Music Club and the National Traditional Music Arts School, now known as the National Traditional Arts Middle and High School. Alongside contemporaries Park Rok-ju and Park Cho-wol (1917-1983), she is recognized as a leading female figure in the evolution of modern pansori.
Married Life
Kim So-hee's artistic development was significantly influenced by her encounter with the contemporary geomungo master, Hyonam Park Seok-gi. Born into affluence in Damyang, Jeollanam-do, Park Seok-gi pursued his education in French Literature at Dongguk University, where he also made his mark in Korean baseball as a player and team leader for the Tokyo International Student Baseball Team. He passed away in 1953 at the age of 54, leaving behind a daughter, Park Yun-cho, who was only nine at the time of his death.
Although Kim So-hee held great respect for Park Seok-gi, their relationship was brief. Park recounted that his father was not a conventional Korean musician; he chose seclusion over collaboration with the Japanese during their occupation, particularly after his aspirations to be a writer were thwarted. In his retreat to his hometown, he embraced the geomungo as a companion and dedicated himself to reviving traditional Korean music, establishing a music academy in Jisil and inviting renowned artists like Park Dong-sil to mentor students. Graduates from this academy, including figures like Kim So-hui, became prominent leaders in the Korean traditional music scene. Today, Park Seok-gi is recognized as a key figure in the revival of Korean traditional music, akin to Dong-ri Shin Jae-hyo, who is celebrated for his contributions to pansori.

In 2015, the National Gugak Center commemorated the 70th anniversary of liberation with the production "Thinking of Park Seok-gi," which was dedicated to Park Seok-gi and performed over three days. Park recounted a childhood memory regarding her parents' conflict over her mother's artistic pursuits.
She reflected on her father's opposition to her mother's art sales, which she initially found incomprehensible but later understood as her mother’s necessity to support the family, given her maternal grandfather's inability to provide assistance. Park noted that her mother assumed the role of the eldest child after the early deaths of her brothers. Furthermore, she revealed that her mother rarely mentioned her father, referring to him as "your father" or "teacher," indicating a relationship more akin to that of mentor and mentee than spouses. Throughout her life, Man-jeong (Kim So-hee) prioritized her artistic integrity over financial gain, insisting on receiving only her appearance fee. Park also shared a poignant memory from the year of her mother's passing, during a trip to Gurye, Jeollanam-do, where her mother expressed a desire to live as an ordinary housewife if given another chance, revealing her longing for a fulfilling family life beyond her public persona.
Park Seok-gi (박석기; 朴錫驥)
Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of information regarding Park Seok-gi.
Park Seok-gi, born in 1899 in Okwa, Jeollanam-do, passed away in 1953 at the age of 54, leaving behind a nine-year-old daughter, Park Yun-cho. He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in Japan but chose to dedicate his life to the arts, studying Geomungo Pungryu and Geomungo Sanjo under Baek Nak-jun, the founder of Geomungo Sanjo, ultimately becoming a master in this traditional music form during the Japanese colonial era.

In his hometown, he constructed a thatched cottage where he invited renowned singers and artists to mentor him, while also gathering young music students to impart traditional music knowledge, thereby aiding in the preservation of cultural heritage during a time of anti-Japanese sentiment. During this period, he engaged Park Dong-sil as a pansori instructor, who taught notable students such as Kim So-hee, Han Ae-sun, and Kim Nok-ju, while Park Seok-gi himself took on the role of geomungo instructor. Notably, Han Gap-deuk, recognized as a holder of the geomungo sanjo art and designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1967, also learned this art form from him.
Filmography and Music
From 1929 to 1994, Kim So-hee produced numerous albums and participated in various films, including First Marriage (1965), The Last Witness (1980), Nanjung Diary (1977), Sea Village (1965), and The Story of Janghwa Hongryeon (1956), among others.
Her Legacy
Kim So-hee, known as Manjeong, stands out among the renowned female singers in the rich 300-year tradition of pansori, often regarded as the 'last legend' of this art form. Her performance of "Departing Ship" at the closing ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympics remains etched in the memories of many.

She occasionally explored pansori, but her mother sternly advised her to abandon it. Subsequently, she immersed herself in the theatrical realm, gaining recognition for her role in "What Will Become?" produced by "Extreme Freedom," which uniquely fused theatre with traditional Korean music. Following a successful European tour from 1978 to 1981, she was cast as the lead in La Mama's Broadway production of Aladdin (The 3 Travelers of Aladin with the Magic Lamp).
In her own words, she described Aladdin as a collaboration among prominent theater companies from the US, UK, and France, where she infused her performance with singing and traditional dance forms such as seungmu and Bongsan mask dance, creating a notable impact. 001.  when creating hwang mido, i took a lot of inspiration from a girl i once worked with for a winter. though we didn’t know one another for long, i’ve always been really inspired by her, and she’s genuinely one of the coolest people i’ve ever met. aside from that, there’s a dash of luna lovegood personality-wise, and the rest is mostly just me filling in any gaps. she’s a dreamy mystic who loves talking to people, asking weird questions, ignoring boundaries, and living her witchy fantasy. she’s a muse i’m really excited to watch grow during the writing / plotting process!
002.  she grew up in gurye county, south korea, but spent a lot of time in namwon, too, so she considers both of them her hometown. her grandparents are pansori performers, and she was constantly in attendance, so that’s where she first began to admire music and the performing arts in general. today, she utilizes the storytelling of pansori but adds a modern twist—focusing more on heartfelt lyrics and simplicity rather than over-the-top production value / technically strong vocals.

003.  unbeknownst to her at the time, her mother suffered from postpartum psychosis after birth, and only a few months into her newborn’s life, she left this realm and entered the wild, expansive cosmos. her decision obviously devastated family and friends, but it also made them feel shameful due to how she chose to make her exit. mido’s family decided to keep everything a secret for many years.
004.  when a classmate’s mother let it slip that that’s what happened to her, kids at school began to alienate her. they called her cursed, a witch, and a demon—literally believing that being her friend would lead to their deaths, too. middle and high school weren’t easy, and she grew to resent her family after finding out about her mother in the hallways at school, of all places. she still deals with that trauma.
005.  she “ran away” from gurye when she was nineteen; not bothering to finish high school. she’d made friends online via soundcloud after posting some covers there. they convinced her to move to seoul and steep herself in the indie music scene. she heeded their advice. it was hard at first. she gave tarot readings curbside and busked for a long time before finding a lover ( possible connection ! ) who took her under their wing and truly helped her find her footing in the city.
006.  when she’s in love, she dissolves into her partners; often mirroring their interests and changing herself in order to be more desirable to them. she does with friends, too. she likes to consider herself adaptable and interchangeable, but it can definitely read as artificial, or like she’s trying too hard. all the bullying she faced gave her a desperate need to fit in, so she does all she can to do just that.

007.  remember the lover from two points up ? yeah, she cheated on them a few different times, and also would get really messy at the clubs in hongdae. she was so new to all of it; having been so sheltered in a small town as a kid. she loves feeling good and having a good time, and she hates confrontation / making people upset, so she’d say yes to everything. she really loves the highs that drugs give her, the buzz alcohol creates, and the pleasure sex brings. she’s indulgent in that way.
008.  she hasn’t spoken to her lover and their mutual friends in ages, and took time away to sorta reflect on the mess she created / the mess she became, and invested time into herself by making a living at a saju café, improving her music-making capabilities, and remaining as sober as possible. however, after a mixtape of hers created ripples online, she’s started live sets in hongdae and is terrified that she’ll run into her old crowd, but is adamant on trying to make her dreams come true.
plots or any development you’d like to see for your character:
001.  the main plot point i’d love to explore is the dynamic between mido and her ex-lover, and if they’re not within this rp, dealing with their mutual friends / people who were aware of the falling out they all had would be dooope ngl. i left the gender of the person flexible as she’s bisexual and loves all people of all identities, so literally anyone can inquire about it! the relationship took shortly after she arrived in seoul and it turned romantic over time, but pretty quickly all things considered. specific years would be ~2016 to ~2018-ish.
002.  branching off from number 001, she cheated on this person towards the mid-to-end of their relationship with a few different people, so those connections are open too. any gender and pretty much any age so long as we’re comfy! infidelity is involved, so only inquire if that is something you’re okay with exploring / writing. totally understand if not! note, they didn’t have to have sex. it could’ve been lots of making out / emotional cheating, too.
003.  as she’s a mess who needs a little “supervision” despite being a grown ass woman, i would looove to have an individual who’s more of a benevolent / good influence on her. as she’s trying really hard to remain sober now that she’s entered the indie scene again, they’d be a shoulder for her to lean on when times get rough. she’d do her best to be there for them, too. she’s flawed, but a good friend.
004.  opposite of above, some bad influences that encourage her to take a shot or smoke some weed or drop some lsd would be pretty cool, too, just to fuck things up a little. it’ll be a lot for her to dip her toes into those waters again, but the temptation’s high and she’s one of those people that’s easily led, so...
005.  general connections like friends, enemies, friends-with-benefits, collaborators, etc. are always encouraged, too. i find that these connections are easier to build in plotting so while i have nothing specific to offer, i’m up for any ideas depending on the muses / their chem! i like the idea of collaborator / fwb blend, or even friends from her past who didn’t like her giving her a second chance, or literally whatever else fits. just gimme, gimme, gimme all of it! ♡♡♡

MUN QUESTIONS.
Q1 :   if  you  could  write  your  character  your  way  in  their  own  movie ,   what  would  it  be  called ,  what  style  would  it  be  filmed  in ,  and  what  would  it  be  about ?       A1 : Recently I decided that if/when I try to write anything serious about Eve again, it’ll center on her being a jewel thief because it presents me more fun, and emotionally diverse, opportunities. That and I have a very specific cover image in my mind. Ideally, her adventures would be a series of books. I have no title in mind, no idea about how ‘it would be filmed’ ( although a style replicating 90s films would be excellent, film grain and all. ) but, I do have a bunch of plots in mind that I really don’t feel like typing out here.  
Q2 :   what  would  their  soundtrack / score  sound  like ?         A2 :  Her score would have a vintage sound (or a jazzy Spike Lee sound, if you will) with instrumentals by Dorothy Ashby (a Jazz Harpist) the Ahmad Jamal Trio, Pharaoh Sanders, Yusef Lateef and Tarika Blue. For music with lyrics, the soundtrack would include the likes of Julie London, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dionne Warwick.
Q3 :   why  did  you  start  writing  this  character ?   + Q4 :   what  first  attracted  you  to  this  character ? A3 :  Whenever I make NPCs for my character’s lives I actually can’t just let them just be NPCs. I start thinking about them too much. Developing them too much. And then I’m like, ‘wow! I really like this character!’ Eve was a different character when I began writing her, and likely wouldn’t be considered the same character as she was previously, if I told someone in real life who knows about my writing (like my grandma) about all the changes she has undergone. Originally Delores was a university professor, because I thought it could lead to interesting interactions with college-age muses. And her previous history with the mafia was also something interesting to tap in. But then I started thinking about what was realistic, what wasn’t realistic, what did I feel comfortable/interested writing? What didn’t I feel comfortable/interested in writing?  So as time went on, things would alter about this character. And the new things I came up with attracted me more. 
Q5 :   describe  the  biggest  thing  you  dislike  about  your  muse.         A5 :  I have a love/hate relationship with Eve’s quiet demeanor. On one hand, I think quieter characters need love and the ability to be fully dimensional but on the other hand, writing louder characters has always been more fun for me. But really, Eve’s guarded behavior makes writing her stressful in some cases with others because sometimes...if I’m going to be honest...people don’t know how to carry a thread and interact with someone of her demeanor effectively. 
Q6 :   what  do  you  have  in  common  with  your  muse ?       A6 : We’re both black, we’re both into art (although our exact interests and aesthetics with art differ)

assuming your muse has changed in some way, be it internally or as a result of a change of the external factors around them, how is your muse different? these can be as small as an opinion on a song they hadn’t released previously or as big as a major change in their background. word count: 261.
minhee’s childhood prior to becoming a trainee is pretty much the exact same as before the restructuring. dance prodigy says fuck u crazy dance mom, i’m not gonna be maddie ziegler, and ends up becoming an idol. she started training a year earlier than before though, so she had a slightly longer training process! i think the most obvious change to everyone else is her faceclaim, which is now lee hyeri. buuuut if you take a look at her pages or app or anything else, you’ll see that she’s now a main dancer, lead vocal & rapper, rather than being a main dancer, lead rapper & vocal! this was sort of a selfish change on my part, because i wanted to open her up to some opportunities for solo work that wouldn’t have suited her before because of her position, but that would’ve fitted more along the lines of what i initially imagined for her image than the options actually available to her. she’s also been a lot happier for a lot longer, because instead of debuting with a concept she hated, minhee got to debut in ... an age appropriate group! if you look here, you can see some examples of what i thought of when thinking of minhee’s ideal group and ... yeah, lily lines up with that pretty well. not perfectly, but pretty well. she’s still dealing with her issues surrounding her family, her sexuality and her fear of aging, but for the most part, minhee’s a lot more settled, or even satisfied, in terms of her career.
what does your muse think of their company and their group? word count: 255.
let’s start with lily, minhee’s beloved. she loves her members, she loves the overwhelming majority of their songs, and she’s proud as hell of the legacy they’ve built up for themselves so far. to be honest, sometimes she it just hits her that oh shit, she’s minnie from lily! and oh shit, they’re basically the biggest girl group ever. no one tell her that candy inherited nation’s girl group or that ultraviolet are taking over the world, let her be dumb. no, but genuinely, she can’t believe the scale of what they’ve achieved sometimes. she doesn’t totally feel like she deserves all the love she gets. then there’s the company behind it all; bc entertainment. she wonders all the time if her mother would’ve went along with everything if it was any other company that minhee came home with a callback from. probably not. for that alone, she’s thankful. she sort of dislikes being portrayed as perfect and untouchable -- more silly and down to earth than a lot of her peers under the company, but still. it’s just part and parcel of bc’s status. the reason it gets to her is that she’s very much not that perfect girl next door that the company wants her to be, and she puts a lot of pressure on herself to live up to it. as such, minhee probably doesn’t take advantage of all of the resources being under bc allows her access to as much as she should, choosing instead to just grin and bear it. 
is your muse on their first contract or their second? if they’ve renewed, what were their feelings around that at the time and what were their hopes for their second contract? if they haven’t renewed, what are their current thoughts on the end of their eventual first contract? word count: 260.
minhee is on her second contract. she renewed with bc in 2019 for a further seven years, which doesn’t feel like that long of a time. seven years seemed like a liftetime when she signed her debut contract in 2012, but it went by pretty fast for her. finding out what the rest of her members were doing was the most important thing for minhee when choosing whether or not to renew. with lily’s status in the industry, the money she made over the previous years, and the wealth belonging to her family, she felt confident that she’d be okay no matter what happened. a safety net. but her preference was always going to be to continue with the rest of lily if possible. she wouldn’t have forced the issue if the others didn’t want to though ... at least not on purpose. knowing minhee, she probably would’ve been crying all over the place and ended up messing with everyone’s plans like that. maybe she would’ve put out an ad like, “nation’s girl group in search of new agency. must be willing to take in four fully grown women and meet all of their demands.” as for the terms in her second contract, minhee was looking for some more royalties and some reassurance that lily would continue to receive the levels of resources and investment that they were already receiving from the company, as well as more opportunities for her to grow as a soloist. she didn’t want them falling by the wayside. she’s too young to be washed up! 
what are your muse’s goals and motivations? word count: 259.
in terms of her career, minhee actually has some pretty lofty ambitions. her top two focuses are solo music and modeling, and they’re basically split an even 50/50. she wants to continue releasing upbeat solo songs, but as for the music itself, aside from some dabbling in lyrics, she’s happy to leave it to the professionals. her primary interest, aside from the obvious performance and promotion aspects, lies in developing her own choreography. for her own songs firstly, but also for lily’s songs, and maybe even others within the company. outside of bc remains to be seen. she’s been really inspired over the years by a lot of the dancers and choreographers that she’s worked with, even from before entering bc, and she’d like to inspire someone else some day too! and modeling ... i can’t lie, minhee just likes looking pretty and getting free stuff, so she’d like to do some more of that. 
as for her personal life ... messy as hell! she still really wants to find love but still only goes looking for it with fuckboys. she wants to get closer with her dad and her extended family, but is finding it difficult to pull off while also keeping her mother at arm’s length. she also can’t help antagonising her mother because she’s a dumb brat. i don’t think minhee realises it yet, but she’s slowly coming to a place of self acceptance too. when she does realise it, i think that’s something that will really motivate her to be the best she can be.
what is one conflict, internal or external, that your muse is currently dealing with, has recently dealt with, or will need to deal with in the future? word count: 262.
i’ve talked in depth about minhee’s conflict over her sexuality here, which all still holds true, but i want to take this opportunity to talk about something else very close to my heart concerning minhee that i’ve mentioned once or twice in passing but never explicitly. minhee is autistic. she just doesn’t know it yet. some fun mun trivia is that i’m autistic! but, as is typical for a lot of afab people, i was basically an adult by the time it was diagnosed. you might say, hey sucy, stop projecting on your muses, but i say no! write what you know and all that. it’s kind of ironic though, because not even i realised minhee could very well be autistic until i’d written her for two years, and deciding took me another. and now she has to go through the diagnostic process again in character, smh me. anyways, yeah, minhee is probably going to have it suggested to her pretty soon while seeking some help for her anxiety about aging, and after that she’s gonna have to recontextualise her whole life because it’s truly like a lightbulb moment for a lot of people, myself included. suddenly everything that was weird to you growing up makes sense. it’s kind of a lot to wrap your head around, and would be for anyone, so writing about that for minhee is going to be interesting. i mentioned above that she’s been kind of moving towards self acceptance anyways, and i think this will be a very big turning point for her on that journey.
if your muse has established career claims, what are their thoughts on their career so far? if they do not, how do they feel about not having individual activities yet? what would they like to do in the future, if anything? if they don’t have ambitions for individual activities, explain why. word count: 277.
she does! her individual activities consist of modeling jobs and a couple of variety show cast positions, because i felt that these were the avenues she would’ve been pushed down up until more recently in her career, when her interest in choreographing for herself would’ve really taken off. minhee has really enjoyed her career so far. she feels settled within the entertainment industry, and that type of security is so sexy to her. the less chance that her mother can say i told you so the better.it’s kind of a big difference for her in terms of character actually, but this incarnation of minhee likes being on variety shows! she’s actually confident appearing on them! this is because of the difference in concept between lily and lipstick. lipstick’s minnie’s confidence took a long time to build up. lily’s minnie’s didn’t. she’d like to be on more variety shows in the future, especially something competition based, like dancing with the stars ... or masterchef, for a laugh, because she’d be the first person eliminated. and then, there’s the modeling. as mentioned a couple of questions ago, it’s something she wants to focus pretty tightly on going forward. her favourite brand that she’s been the ambassador for so far is crocs. she loves her crocs. she has, like, five different colours. crocs, please sign minhee again. working with etude house and kloud was pretty cool too though. sometimes she’s still able to swing free beers when she goes out. so, going forward, she wants to continue with those types of gigs, as well as pursuing more solo music and developing her skills as a choreographer, like i mentioned earlier!

he was born in port-au-prince, haiti to a single mother. he never met his father because his father was someone that his mother hooked up with while she was studying in the states. it was her last year in college and she didn’t know she was pregnant until she was about three months along. she took a year off and went back home so she could have him. she considered putting him up for adoption, but as soon as he was born and she looked into his eyes, she “fell in love with him and couldn’t part from him”, or that’s what she always tells samyr. 
when he was six years old and his mother was twenty-seven, she decided to go back to school and get her degree. she spent the first six years of his life working two full time jobs and a part time job just so she could provide for him and save money at the same time. after she saved enough money, she packed up their things and moved them to america, california to be exact, so she could graduate and get a better paying job. she finished up her criminal justice degree and got a job working as a law clerk while she put herself through law school. she finally graduated, passed the bar exam, and now she’s a highly sought after criminal attorney in the states. 
his childhood was a hard, yet happy time for him. hard because he and his mother lived in california while his mother worked for a very low salary. it was difficult for them to make ends meet, especially when she was still in school. even though she eventually became an extremely wealthy lawyer (she started making money around the time samyr was fifteen, but by then he was already making money from his show), things were hard at first. he was still a happy kid though. his mother gave him a lot of love, and he had friends and a cute puppy named chichi (she’s still alive, with her old ass ;-;) 
samyr’s first taste of the spot light was at a young age. he did a little bit of modeling for stores and brands, but didn’t really get his big break until he was 12 and landed one of the lead roles of a children’s sitcom. he loved acting when he first started doing it, and worked hard for the several seasons that he was apart of the show before it ended. he was nineteen when the show ended. he did cameos on other shows, and acted in a few movies during the course of the show too. 
he’s a very passionate and dedicated person, but once he’s finished with something and wipes his hands clean of it, he’s finished indefinitely. he felt as though after several years of acting on one show and doing other acting jobs, that he was ready to bring to a close the chapter of acting in his life. he enjoyed it, still does, but he wanted to pour all of his time and effort into the next aspect of his life - music.
he had actually started getting into music around the middle of his show’s run. he had been in the industry for a while and started making friends with musicians who had introduced him to the art of music. he quickly fell in love with it, not just singing and rapping, but the technical aspects of the music industry as well - producing, sound mixing, composition, e.t.c. 
he released his first music project while he was still acting. it was in 2011, and it was a mixtape that he dropped out of the blue. people didn’t know who it was at first because he just dropped it on soundcloud and his account wasn’t under his own name. but some fans ended up doing some digging and made the connection.
after that, he would occasionally drop music projects here and there (i’ll eventually make a little timeline of his music releases, more so for my own means of keeping track, but to also give you guys an idea of what he’s released so far!) 
now he focuses primarily on music. overall, his sound and lyrics are explicit, but there are still two sides to him - the ‘hard’ side (dababy, roddy ricch) and his softer side (the weeknd). he likes having that kind of duality, because it gives him the freedom to explore himself as a musician. 
personality
he’s a very hard worker, and extremely prideful. he doesn’t like accepting help from others, especially if he thinks they’re pitying him. he and his mother used to get a lot of “offers” of help, which were honestly just people feeling sorry for them, which he absolutely hated. he doesn’t even like asking for help when he knows he needs it. if you ever catch him asking for help, you best believe it’s because it’s his very last resort. 
if samyr’s face and name weren’t connected to his music, no one would even think that he was the one rapping and singing on his tracks. a lot of his music has explicit sexual innuendos and undertones, and holds a little aggression from time to time. it’s a complete contrast to samyr’s lowkey personality. what most people don’t know is that writing music is his outlet. he doesn’t get frustrated or angry (most of the time) because when he feels those things, he channels it into his writing. 
that being said, he does have a little bit of a temper. it’s something that his mother says he gets from his grandfather, a man he had never met because he passed away before his birth. he has a high tolerance for things, but if he’s pushed over the edge, he gets black out angry. he hates that though, which is why he stays ‘medicated’ most of the time (lmao he stays high) 
he’s so deep in the closet that he’s finding christimas presents. he knows that there’s nothing wrong with being gay, he’s an avid supporter of the lgbtq+ on social media platforms and such, but it’s just something that he struggles to accept about himself. his mother is very open minded, but he has a lot of family members who aren’t, and he doesn’t want them to disown him. 
kinda gets angry/upset if his own sexuality is brought up? maybe not really angry or upset, but just really defensive? again, finding christmas presents lol
very particular with and protective of his hair lol has definitely smacked a few people’s hands for trying to touch it

A3 : I got to Coerthas. I thought dragoons were cool. I wanted to do a ‘fallen’ take on a knight character.

A1 :  It’d be a Scorsese movie shot in the style of the Departed, and would follow Hilven’s journey into the Ala Mhigan resistance, the beginning of the long con, her timely exit, and the subsequent fallout.

A2 :  Moody, melodic, with occasionally discordant and unsettling tracks. Some lyrical songs, but nothing in English.

A3 : I have no clue, really. I wanted to roleplay, and I wanted to roleplay a character paying the price for a life of lies and hubris.

good fuckin yard my guys gals and non binary pals !! i’m admin c and this is my messy disaster gay problem child jooseok. below the cut you’re gonna find out a loT about his tragic ass and if you hit the like button if i haven’t already, i’ll hit you up for plotting !! i’ll give a few ideas of connections on the end of this too since i’m gonna update and redo his plot page sfngn bUT let it be known i also mun aurora, euchan and emrys so i may have also messaged you for plotting on one of those acc’s, if so don’t worry i will ensure to give you the chance to plot with all my babies !! without further ado: 
jooseok is the son of a mob family, they’re very well established in the criminal world. his parents are yeong dami and yeong joohyuk. however it is dami who actually runs the game and is the head bitch in charge shall we say, not to bring feminist agenda joo to life but as u can imagine due to this he has hella respect for women esp his mother bc of the strength he observed in her growing up. he thinks women are stronger and better at survival bc of learning through his ma and being trained by her. 
so he was raised of course in the family gang, raised in crime and never really knew any other way to live. when he reached seventeen he was initiated officially into the gang meaning his role became more full time and his responsibility became larger. he dropped out of college after his first two years there to accomodate for this and so his education wasn’t the finest but he was homeschooled for a long time before he got too old as the gang considered it and he no longer had time for it. plus he was of the belief he knew enough about how the world worked through the observation of the good and ugly alone. 
he does have a younger sister who he considers his entire world and he also has a brother of around the same age as him. the family dynamic is a little complex, he’d kill without hesitation for both his siblings despite the fact that his brother and himself often don’t agree or see eye to eye on anything, they bicker and give each other shit but they’d never turn their backs on each other. these are wanted connections i will eventually put on the list so they can be filled out also. 
he’s considered an infiltrator and a double agent as his main job titles for the gang so right now he works undercover in the police force helping the wrongly accused escape a life of jail time and prove their innocence when the justice system fails them. occasionally he’s put in charge of strategy too and he is very very respected within the gang for being the youngest and yet the most skilled who rose to his tasks very quickly for his age and became the best at what he does at an alarmingly quick rate, he’s actually pretty well known for having the reputation of being the youngest to climb the ranks and gain status like this. 
he could actually have been the boss of the gang with the amount of tasks and dirty work he takes on
HOWEVER...
jooseok has a huge secret and this is that recently he’s started attending college again and taken on night classes to study law and learn more about the police force so he can become a genuine crime detective. he is also undertaking training for the police force. 
the lifestyle and career of the police force has always been his dream and his goal but with his limited education it was never something he could achieve alongside his gang life. this is why he jumped at the chance to at least do something undercover with the police and despite playing dirty cop, use it to do something good, vigilante like if you will. 
joo can’t keep his secret forever though, his gang are getting wind of what’s going on and soon he’s going to have to go into hiding. despite the gang being his family, hits will be issued on him until he is eliminated and killed. simply put he is considered a traitor the minute he gives up gang life, and he knows far too much to simply be allowed to walk free possibly giving away all their secrets and intel. because it is a family business there are severe consequences for him turning away from what is considered his duty and responsibility.
joo = big be gay, do crime type energy. he’s abrasive and amoral but he’s also nurturing and naturally smart and talented at everything he puts his passion into. he’s resourceful and crazy adaptable and he’s equal parts a protector as much as he is a fighter. he can be broody and blunt but he can also be witty and hilarious with his dark sense of humor and somewhat messed up mind and moral code. if you’re considered close to jooseok then he’ll kill half the population of daegu easy with his own hands with no worries so long as you’re safe. 
he worked undercover in america for a year so he can speak english and went by the shortened name of jo over there but most people call him seok or ong in korea to shorten his name to a nickname. he’s fluent in his english, jooseok is well known for being a quick learner in every area if u know what i mean *side eyes*
can be a bit of a fuckboy but has a big heart deep down despite it all, just keeps it concealed because of past toxic relationships and the belief taught into him from early on that any attachment to anything you don’t owe it to, would only result in weakness and vulnerability. and you don’t want people to know you have weaknesses when you do what jooseok does. *coughs* for this reason he has had a lot of pining and unrequited love situations *coughs* 
he’s not that close with his parents, he keeps a strictly professional relationship with them mostly but his mum is his idol for her mentality and attitude to life. though he wishes he could achieve more than what she allowed for him to be a part of. wishes he could be normal. 
OTHER LIL HEADCANONS: 
joo joined the gang officially at seventeen when the initiation process took place and this was the time he met hyunjin ( @phyunjinn​ ) also known as his best friend and right hand man. they quickly became partners in the gang for everything, if joo had business to deal with especially the dangerous kind then nate would be by his side, acting as his protection for anyone who dared cross him and likewise he would give the same back. think kinda like alec and jace i guess as a good example with the whole parabatai bond aspect. they fight the best when they’re fighting together, and if one of them died, a huge piece of the other would die with them. 
at first joo actually refused to talk to nate cause he’s a lil shit and he didn’t get why it should be important but dami urged her son, pointing out they were of similar ages and being initiated at the same time and it was important to have someone he could talk to and rely on like that. so he sidled his way over eventually and pretty easily and nonplussed like made a best friend out of the other male. they grew to have a secret code of trust between them, joo learning sign language for the male to put him at ease and also ordering the rest of the gang did the same despite complaints he quickly shut that shit down arguing they needed to be able to communicate with nate in his way to ensure his safety faster if need ever be. ( but for him personally, he learnt because he wanted to be able to talk to nate in the way that comes most naturally to the male ) 
in college he’s considered a soft jock type, heart of gold but he’s very physically attractive and a bit of a heart throb and definitely considered sporty despite also being very musically driven. 
PLOT IDEAS: 
joo needs some college friends, musically talented people he can consider study buddies, he was actually almost an idol once when he nearly signed on with a company because of how musically talented he is as a producer and songwriter - typically he only writes for close friends and always ensures the lyrics feel truthful and genuine to his friend’s stories but yeah give me people he is encouraged by with that and just able to be himself with.

i would so love a good cop,bad cop type thing where someone who he’s on the police force with or is also training to be in the police force with him is genuine and legit and knows he isn’t and is kinda like shunning tf outta him for it but also trying to teach him how to be better without even realizing it and sort of having their mind changed on how simple good and bad is bc actually there is kind of a grey area which joo belonged to.

BACKSTORY: 
was in and out of the adoption system most of his life and went to many toxic homes and families that were neglectful or abusive because he wasn't the perfect child they had dreamed of. at first thought he was never going to be fostered at all because he wasn't the ideal age or considered young enough really for many family setups to want him. 
was separated from his brother in the adoption system and has never fully got over it since they grew up closer than ever due to their circumstances and were more like twins. strongly believing for a long time they were the only ones who could look out for each other and make the miserable upbringing worth fighting through. he still believes he's the only one who can really protect his brother and tears himself apart thinking of how he might have suffered without him, if it was the same way he did. 
the father died of alcohol issues and early set heart failure. the mother decided in her grief and mourning she could not cope with the boys and got rid of them before taking her own life. both parents were fairly young when they had the boys, too young really. 
the boy grew up believing he was a monster and that he was far too violent for loving or to be loved. that he only brought destruction and damage everywhere he went. simply put he was too rough around the edges. 
was taught to believe that if he simply kept quiet and out of the way maybe his foster parents would love him more and he could make his life there more bearable.
his school and teachers did nearly find out but he always lied and covered it up well, in fact lying became increasingly easy because he didn't believe there was anything better waiting for him anyway, he did not want to be saved and a part of him still wanted to pray for the best in his foster parents, a sudden change. a part of him thought he was strong enough to deal with their violence bestowed upon him now. 
of course though this made him a very angry kid with a lot of secrets and a lot of pain he had to keep buried, a lot of the time he became too agressive with his friends and people who attempted to help him because it was all he knew, agressive spat out hurtful words and rash actions that are just a touch too brutal. a shove, words spat in faces. he's trying to be better though, he really is. he doesn't want to hurt or break things anymore. that's all. 
he's beaten up a lot, he tends to brush it off with a 'it happens' or 'it wasn't a big deal' when his ribs end up broken and he's taping them up himself etc.
some nervous dispositions that have stuck are things such as shaking a lot, folding arms in on himself and making himself appear smaller, biting his nails down over excessively.
abandoned foster child who fell prey to the system and came out worse for it because of it all is basically his whole niche. 
a lot of things become an argument even when he doesn't intend it, apologies can come out more like taunting. he can be sharp tongued and ugly with his words. 
in turn he's bad at accepting apologies even when he knows deep down things are his own fault. he struggles to find words that don't burn and hurt and take. he just doesn't know how to do comfort, he thinks he has the idea sometimes but he is scared to reach out and give the wrong touch, end up hurting more instead. 
he has an issue with touching in general. he doesn't let himself do it much, doesn't bestow it on others. he knows what he can be capable of how he can't control his own strength and he is terrified of himself.* biggest promise to himself is that he never hurts anyone even in the smallest way even when its justified in an emotional breakdown or when he is trying to keep himself from being abandoned once again. he won't let himself. 
' you know what they say about monsters. you know what happens to the people who love them. are you going to do that?' even if no one else is afraid of him. he is afraid of himself.
' your hands don't know how to be gentle, think about the last beautiful thing that shattered in your palms. the fresh rosebuds crumbling between your fingers like a bruise. you wolf boy, you war machine. you wouldn't know how to hold something magic and not destroy it...' 
is littered in bruises and scars and burn marks. 
CURRENT LIFE: 
since moving to daegu he has slowly made progress, healed, gotten better. he has worked away at himself until he made himself more of a tragic masterpiece than a messy splash of unfinished painting and blurry mottled colours. 
he lives with four friends, close friends who have been with him through everything and taught him how to healthily feel not only happiness and love but also let go of and exhale all of that pain and anger and violence he could not control. that was not his own but haunted him. aching to be placed somewhere else than inside his body which was too small to feel such hurt and heartbreak.
he got therapy after many tries with many therapists who botched up he eventually found one who worked and helped him look for new hobbies which would channel and turn his pessimistic and negative energy and burdens into something more beautiful or better managed. he slowly learned to trust himself at least a little bit more once again. she also helped him on a journey of distance without isolation so he could understand he would not do the harm he always imagined he was the root of. 
when he leaves his family, it is in the middle of the night with packed bags and not much else to his name. he thinks it'll be easier on everyone that way, no letters or texts or calls. in fact he breaks his phone and switches it out for a cheap new one when he's ready to be contacted once again. there are no goodbyes.
he spends four years just crashing on his friend's floor of their apartment who are a couple who practically raise him and take him under their wing and simply accept him in all his flawed and closed off excellence, simply listening and accepting and providing a safe haven without expectations of any kind. 
he works on painting, writing, gardening anything that will teach him how to love and nurture better than he did before. to see beauty and nourish it instead of destroy it or twist it. he learns piano finding romance in the music. 
he got over his eating disorder and began cooking, become a rather skilled chef with his friends help and had more regular meals especially under his guidance when he couldn't cook then the other would do it for him. feeding him steadily every day to build his appetite back up again. 
he took more care to exercise and keep his body and health much more good, nothing amazing but finally the average. he also got a couple jobs all that would help him with communication and learning new talents or discovering his own further.
slowly he stopped flinching every time someone tried to touch or did touch him. small touches from his friends ease him along, an arm slung around his shoulders, a hand in his own, a gentle hug. he finds a makeshift home and love and happiness where everyone isn't trying overly hard to find a way to nurse it into him.
eventually recently he has came to a point where he can cancel his therapy sessions comfortably and flush those pills to help with that anxiety and unbearable sadness. somehow he learns how to breathe again all by himself without someone else coaching him through it all.
EXTRA: 
woojin is gay so romance plots are only applicable to other male muses however in the past before he knew of his sexuality he could’ve had an ex girlfriend or two!
potential romance plot inspiration heavily inspired by the poem yes & no by natalie wee. there’s a lot of flexibility on this one in terms of timeframing so just hit me up to discuss it more after reading the poem if you’re interested !!
the usual plots are of course up for grabs: childhood best friend, current best friend, ex’s, first love, friends he met through therapy, friends he met in the foster system, confidant, coffee fix partner, fake dating, study partner ( he’s studying music ofc and he specializes in production ), someone he writes lyrics for, someone he writes lyrics with or produces with, someone who makes him realize how amazing his lyrics actually are and how much potential lies within that talent as a career goal, his muse, i imagine he works a part time job as a waiter so do with that what u will maybe they can be work buddies?, also does babysitting every now and then for extra cash, etc.

Tel Aviv 2019: Straight outta Finland to Eurovision with a meme icon and his side-kick

“heeeeeey what is that song on that video???” Definitely not Darude - Sandstorm. Grow the fuck up.
I mean that they basically threw off the open call for songs from Finnish artists, instead opting for having one artist national final, usually one very known but very gettable-bored-of name so that they could get some more viewership rather when they pick a random nobody from a bunch of other random nobodies. Last year YLE got themselves an artist whose Eurovision ticket was long overdue, but this year they went the extra step and brought us HIM.

Yes, THAT HIM. Meet Toni-Ville Henrik Virtanen, which thankfully has a pseudonym to publish his music with - Darude. Almost 20 years ago he published this beautiful techno single "Sandstorm" with lyrics like "du du du du du du du du du du du du". And now it's become the big-ass target of memery for the past few years on the Internet, with Darude being very well aware of it all - I don't think he has escaped questions about "Sandstorm" now that the Eurovision interviewers media is on horizon and interviews literally every single representative, no matter if they're shy or unpopular with the bookies at all.
And even if "Sandstorm" was the only thing to shake his tiny little Finnish world, it did not break Darude to be just a one-hit wonder (well he still looks like one but yeah) and he's got more music out ever since. And it probably sounds a little too tragic when YLE resorts to just nagging and begging Darude to represent their nation, even kinda secretly hoping that thanks to him Finland can have a qualification just solely for the meme factor. Darude even said so that he at first rejected their calls, but this year became THE year for him to go, and he's not alone obviously - his credited vocalist friend for this ride to Tel Aviv became Sebastian Rejman, a bit washed-up media star who already did some collaborating with Darude.
So the format was basically the same for this year's UMK - artist announced separately, then each of their 3 songs gets published every week on a specific weekday, with single cover art and a music video already, and the Finnish people together with international juries vote for the best track. Simple as that. Unlike with Saara Aalto though, all Darude & Sebastian songs were barely even distinct from one another in sound - just techno songs that have a piece of "Sandstorm" with themselves. Well only 2 do anyway. But still, techno/house songs to listen to on the radio when you're driving and minding your own business. And I had hard time picking favourites but all of them were alright I guess. Yet somehow my least favourite happened to win... and that was "Look Away", very much so inspired by natural disasters and how do we all ignore everything around us. No matter if it's a storm or hurricane or tornado or wind throwing sand at our eyes.
I don't know why the song didn't click with me all that much at first, I suppose it was because it's just a mindless gloomy techno song that raises global awareness (we already have Denmark talking about that, but they're insisting that "love is forever", while Finland is just... getting up more seriously in all this), and besides that, it's just incredibly repetitive. It consists more of the pre-chorus-ish chorus (I mean the line "is it in my head? Am I the only one?" and that other line preceding) and the actual chorus that mostly goes like "look away, look away, look away...". Even to the point when the song ends with some additional “look away”ing but under a different drum beat. What's it with Finns having a passion for the word "away"? We already had seen them sending a "Sing It Away", which was basically a cheer-up tune telling you to sing your problems off... while this year? We're trying to NOT look into the problems dead in the eye. We're looking... erm, uh, away.
But now I do have to say that I somewhat like it. Tell it to ya - the B minor chord is possibly one of my least favourite music keys, so I might as well be a little bit more negative on it if takes the song with itself to sound incredibly dull and painfully meh. So thankfully we'll be hearing it live half a step lower (idk if that's what it is with most EDM singers in Eurovision that shit like this can be possible, as well as idk why are they allowed into Eurovision in the first place. But seriously, why can't you just choose the same key you sang in in studio for Eurovision...), which made the song sound better to me - as a Nightcore junkie, I am passionate about hearing songs in different keys all the darn time, to see in what key would a certain song sound the best. It's usually the song's key that makes me like a song better or worse live rather than a live performance itself (though in some NFs I can see which of my favourite acts are DoA by not even emoting towards them - my emotion has to be evoked, and if I evoke it on purpose, well then, I'd just rather stay motionless completely on anything and only yelp if a song causes me to do this unexplainedly). We'll see how Sebastian will execute his singing live. As for now, he's the captain of this sinking ship that hit a small iceberg (another one of the disasters we usually "look away" from until it's found in our history books). Not Darude. Darude's just merely a musical hold-up of the disaster. It all has to depend on the vocalist and if the staging clicks with the audience. Sure, Darude can put on a red wig and green sunglasses so that he could click with the meme audience, but that won't get the Finns far.
So I like this song, it actually has some cool musical moments thrown in (I like the piano for one), I can enjoy this off my free time. But Estonia does it better at the "Finno-Ugric EDM-ish entry about Mother Nature's tantrums" category and I ain't even sorry for saying this. But I gotta be sorry for Darude. This year's UMK had the lesser care about it because... well, these songs weren't exactly inspiring or anything, and with people wanting something groundbreaking, their hopes kept on vaning away with each and every song release of the UMK entries': "oh so the next 2 two songs will be good right?" "oh so then the last one will be the best one, yeah right?" "...oh, okay then .-." And him, as the Finnish meme king, should have deserved a better year for a better Eurovision stint, so he could have become something à la Epic Sax Guy. Right now I mostly see a middle-aged DJ with 2 kids, not a redhead dude with green sunglasses looking shadily on us. And that's okay sometimes because memes don't necessarily need to be remembered for memes (just like I mostly remember Kanye West for music, and then memes come second), but Finland's gonna take a miracle to get through, and I hardly see any. That's an aina mun pity.
Approval factor: Eh, it's alright, but I would certainly not hold it up to high regards post-contest? lol.
Follow-up factor: it's kiiiiinda bleak knowing that after giving us probably one of the most favourable dark horse efforts for Eurovision they're now going down the dancier route, with one entry after being a banger, the other being a dad banger. Ah well. It doesn't flow so neatly in my eyes, it seems.
Qualification factor: almost dead in the tracks. Finland flows anywhere they can, having a lot of bad luck for 3 years this decade, and I doubt that the juries will be supporting this heavily, considering they are better at rating good vocalists over bad ones, so I don't think this will sail through. But I secretly have hopes in this. It's not that bad, but Estonia is in this semi too, and it's a friendlier EDM track, so I don't quite think that repetitive will out-compell the good formulaic. Plus, Sebastian has a lot to fix vocally, and I doubt that he will carry Finland any further if he doesn't fix anything, so so far the chances of Finland aren't looking up imo. Bottom 5 at the semi is more likely if not already the actual outcome. Maaaaybe 10th in the semi at best, but I doubt it.
NATIONAL FINAL BONUS
The more this section pops up in my works, the less I wanna recap national finals anymore. I hope there’s more breather moments with me having to review a lot of internal selection songs in between the ones from NFs, because this whole season was an utter disaster, and it’d help if the next one isn’t. So let’s check in on Finland's selection’s best:
• But seriously, did anyone ever see Darude as a Finnish representative coming??? No??? Me neither. I was just sitting there, waiting to see if there's a hope for Mikael Saari (you know, that balladeer guy from previous UMKs - I do believe some audiences love him just as much as Saara Aalto, who only was on one UMK and one Euroviisut) to be announced on this special separate programme. Nope - the trilingual hosting trio of the programme that included Krista Siegfrids in it as the token Swedish speaker just happened to happily proclaim Darude as THE Finnish hopeful... and the world was s h o o k e t h. Just look at him go. His smug grin is still iconic on here.

• During the wait for all the UMK songs to pile up, the excitement for Darude faded away and everyone moved on to support other countries. I can't blame them, because I have found like one decent song this UMK that's still worth listening to twice a year or so - "Superman". Where Darude becomes the everyday hero for ordinary people that have difficulties in live to do mundane stuff. Maybe this song would have made him look like a better meme than his current entry would have? Just watch him go on his DJ booth dressing like a knock-off superhero because EBU doesn't allow blatant advertising. A way better gimmick than Gromee's snakey hands. Alas, no one will have to hear "Superman" anymore. Granted it's just an EDM song just like any other, but somehow I liked it best, end of.

• There's at least one memorable screenshot from UMK as well, so I'm happy with that. I saw this pop up on my Twitter time line and I could not stop laughing inside. Seriously. Krista and this other guy should host ESC provided Eurovision is ever coming back to Finland. They had a lot of iconic outfit changes during the NF itself (and the NF itself had "Look Away" with some dancer on a cube but they scrapped the tall cube for Tel Aviv entirely), but those floral onesies are my favourite.

Now I kinda hope that there’s something that will alarm YLE in the meantime that Finland needs a better approach for Eurovision and we’ll see another fully-fledged UMK in the works next year, and then Finland can be great again. For now, I’ll just wish “onnea” to Darude and Sebastian, with hopes that people don’t look away from their song at all! (but most likely they will so what’s the point.)

IF YOU PICK HIM: When you pick Reiji, you expect a very simple apprenticeship; he’s going to teach you how to be a manager. He’s a very diligent teacher, albeit a rude one. He teaches you the basics, of course; but, he also teaches you things you never considered - knowledge that will guarantee your success. Then, one night, you accidentally stumble upon him playing a hand crafted chello. His performance is breathtaking, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Maybe, you, and only you, can help him step into the spotlight for the first time.
♥ Ayato Sakamaki
If you asked Ayato Sakamaki why he decided to give up basketball to pursue an idol career... Well, frankly, he just felt like it. He’s got the looks, the voice, and the dedication... not to mention quite the god complex. Girls can’t help but throw themselves at his feet; yet, none of it is good enough for him. He has money, fame, and all he could ever want, right at his fingertips. There’s something missing, but he has no idea what it is.
IF YOU PICK HIM: Ayato is certain that what he’s missing is an award, something to bring him to the next level; so, why not the King of Idol’s award? Of course, that means he needs a queen. Well, you’ll just have to do, even though you’re a flat chested moron. Every waking moment is spent preparing for the contest. A well known pianist, who specializes in slow, romantic songs, and also sings whilst he plays, Laito’s music is a favorite in five star restaurants and elegant clubs. As he might say, “I may not be an actor; but, I am one for... dramatics.” His infamous reputation is that he never goes home alone: a playboy, by day and by night, who’s captured many’a’hearts. Even those who don’t know his name know his work or have heard his voice.
IF YOU PICK HIM: Laito doesn’t take apprentices. He doesn’t have time to teach someone the ways of the piano. But, as a fellow pianist and singer, Laito sees you more as competition, or a means to an end. That alone is the reason he agrees to do some duets with you. But, he finds himself unable to refuse you time and time again. There’s a loneliness to him, ever present in his eyes, that you simply can’t look past. Beyond the glamour, his frequent attempts to woo you, and playful flirting, you see something more... so much more.
♥ Subaru Sakamaki
If you called him an idol, he would scoff at you in disgust. That annoying blonde dude in the pink is an idol. Subaru plays guitar and sings rock and metal, and is the founder and core of White Rose. He doesn’t dance or throw flowers to the crowd. All of his songs are of his own making, originals birthed from his experiences, his suffering, his passions. They’re hardcore, angsty, and occasionally emotional and heartfelt. Yet, Subaru is cold, distant, and definitely not the kind to associate with his fans, or other musicians. He has the reputation for being an unobtainable bad boy.
IF YOU PICK HIM: He definitely does not want to do a duet with you; his manager can kiss his ass. But, if he doesn’t, he’ll lose his record deal. Fuck. Subaru agrees... quite unwillingly, and somehow manages to drag himself to practice. He doesn’t care for the way you sing, or so he says. Your guitar skills are mediocre at best, or so he says. You obviously don’t understand the meaning behind his lyrics... Or, maybe you do, and he just hasn’t noticed yet.
♥ Ruki Mukami
There is no jazz club this side of the world that doesn’t play Ruki’s music on a regular basis. He’s almost a legend, able to capture smooth blues and even the rolling, almost rock’n’roll aspects of jazz. He’s also a favorite in casinos. However, Ruki rarely performs live. He’s a busy man with a reputation to uphold. But, spending little time in the spotlight has greatly diminished his fame. He’s ready to make a comeback... a proper one.
IF YOU PICK HIM: You’re a means to an end, something Ruki makes very clear when he agrees to partner up with you. You’re a very talented jazz singer, though you’re nowhere near Ruki’s level. He likes that, actually; it means you won’t outshine him. But, somewhere along then way, Ruki finds himself not caring when you do outshine him. He flinches away when you accidentally touch him, and loath you calling him anything other than Mr. Mukami. But, you can’t help but wonder what he’s hiding behind those mahogany eyes.
♥ Kou Mukami
He’s been famous his entire life, beginning as a child actor in plays and dabbling in small television roles. Now, he’s an idol, in every sense of the word: music, dancing, fashion, you name it. He’s also self-proclaimed best friend to the lead singer and guitarist of White Rose, though the silver-haired boy denies it. Kou is well adjusted to this life: fame, fortune, money, and literally crawling with women. However, deep down, it doesn’t matter to him, at all. It’s a means to an end, and something to keep himself entertained.
IF YOU PICK HIM: To the outside world, Kou is flirtatious and sweet, generous, even. When you choose him, you’re partnered up for a modeling campaign that’ll involve ads, live dance routines, and even a fabricated romance. “Love sells, kitten,” as he put it. Kou is demanding, with high expectations. He expects you to always look your best, especially if you want to be famous by the end of it. But, at some point, the attention he gives you, the fake dates, and the extravagant romantic gestures, doesn’t seem to be just for the camera anymore.
♥ Yuma Mukami
Since when does one of the world’s best mixed martial arts champions become a musician on the side? Well, it all started when he agreed to sing at one of Ruki’s jazz clubs. The rest is history. Yuma doesn’t consider himself famous; but, he’s a favorite at local clubs and elite bars. He doesn’t really care for it, though. It’s simply something more carefree to do between championships and training. Besides, it’s an easy way to meet ladies who don’t expect him to stick around.
IF YOU PICK HIM: You expected to be Ruki’s associate; yet, somehow, you ended up as Yuma’s... slave. Well, that’s an exaggeration, honestly. But, you expected to get a chance to perform, to play, to sing, not be stuck scheduling and assisting this guy. You stick around, however, hoping the opportunity will come around. Yuma sees your longing for the stage, but expects you to prove your worth it before he’ll give it to you.
♥ Azusa Mukami
Azusa started small, playing his ukulele and ocarina at dive bars and the corners of popular tourist attractions. He got the opportunity to play on the radio and was picked up by a talent agency. One year later, Azusa is making record deals and modeling for boho clothing lines. He’s known for being humble, always wearing T-shirts that show off scars from the days when he was homeless, a past that he keeps well hidden, from everyone, including his agent.
IF YOU PICK HIM: It was actually Azusa’s vocal coach that put him up to this. A duet that would finally get him on the top charts and introduce you into the spotlight... if only it were that simple. He’s never written a duet before, and your presence only seems to make it worse. You’re just likely everybody else - you couldn’t possibly understand his music... It’s not just about the duet anymore, but proving to Azusa that you’re not like everyone else.
