Help Needed
What I am going to state goes against everyone’s common knowledge. I'm seeking help concerning my memory of a 67 GTO I had for three days about 1980. A guy I met several times at my local auto parts store owned a 67 GTO. We became friends a while later because we both had GTOs. He had been working on upgrading his car with new suspension work, a reprogrammed rebuilt Turbo 400, a WS-6 steering box, and 3.70 gears. The 428 had a .30 bore, Speedpro pistons, a Nunzio Romano optimized Ram Air camshaft, valve porting, an Edelbrock 4-bbl intake, a Cloyes double-roller chain set, and a reworked oiling system.
One night, he smacked a curb badly and collapsed the right front suspension members back into the frame. He called asking if I would buy his car. He quickly needed $700 to secure another vehicle to continue attending vocational school to become a certified mechanic. I paid $800 because the engine cost nearly twice as much. He flatbedded the car to my house and dropped it before my parents. Understand that there were two 70 GTOs, a 71 Chevelle SS, and a 68 Firebird 400 out front already on a seldom-trafficked street.
I took the next three days off to dismantle the car. During the strip of the car, I found it had a “removable hardtop.” Frank mentioned I would find a surprise; it did not seem weird because my brother’s Corvette had a removable top. I had ridden in the car several times before and never knew. Two latches at the top of the windshield mounting and two heavy-duty integral hooks at the rear window deck lid. I had my father and sister help me remove the hardtop from the car. Flip the latches at the front and pivot it skyward and back toward the rear. The third was in the backseat to control the hardtop when you worked it out of the two receiving wells at the rear decklid. It was heavy so you needed three to protect the paint and the edges where the hardtop flowed into the side panels. The integral hooks were built like the hook of a tie-rod adjusting tool. The well had about a 3\8″ bar from which you had to work the hook. We removed the hardtop, moved it to the backyard, and placed it on carpenter horses. Months later, I placed an ad in the Want Ad Press. Three days later, I sold it to a guy from upstate New York. I remember the guy’s excitement when he traveled 100 miles with a flatbed to purchase the hardtop. I thought I got away like a bandit when he paid 400 dollars.
Sometime in the next decade, I discovered how rare this hardtop was. I thought it was just an option like my brother's Corvette. There exist printed media concerning the 67 GTO that states there were 173 produced with the removable hardtop. It was in a booklet concerning GTOs. It may have been written in literature from Ames Performance or H-O Racing Specialties. I thought it was like the Corvette my brother owned; not readily found but not rare. If I knew the rarity aspect, I would have resurrected it. I would have sent it out to have the frame checked rather than strip it for parts. I bought it for the 428 motor and the reprogrammed TH400.
Two decades later, Vin Diesel's xXx movie features the same hardtop setup. The same twist latches near the ends of the top front windshield mounting surface. The scene where the hardtop is blown off the car once you flipped the latches with the car in motion. That was how we removed the hardtop. It was structurally sound and fit without leaks because I rode in the car before its demise.
I am bedridden in a care facility. If I were mobile, I would be hounding N.J. Motor Vehicles for my friend’s VIN. The car was sweet. I didn’t know how sweet. I would have added it to my stable of cars.
I recently read about the body options for the 67 GTO on the Internet, I realized that the car was most likely a convertible with a factory hardtop. The fit was too perfect to be anything else. I'm writing this because I need your help in keeping my sanity. I know what I experienced is contrary to what others think. Does anyone in the Pontiac GTO community know about this hardtop option? I believe others are knowledgeable; it probably was the Winchester 73 of its time.
I believe the 67 GTO convertible has two receiving wells for the ragtop framework hidden under the boot at the rear valance. The posted image has four red-bordered highlighted areas where the hardtop was attached to the body. At the rear of the hardtop were two integral hooks similar to the highlighted hook in the image of the tie-rod sleeve adjusting tool. The hooks were constructed in the same manner as the tool; the same width and radius. The hardtop required the hooks to slide into the receiving well as you lowered the hardtop. The radius would engage around the aforementioned 3/8-inch bar built into each well.
An e-mail with an attached photo of the rear valance deck of a convertible with the boot removed would help prove or disprove my supposition. Any information or help would be deeply appreciated.

The house was at the end of a nice quiet street. Your suitcases were piled high in the back seat, almost too high to see out the rear window but it wouldn’t be for much longer. It will be nice to finally stretch your legs after being in the car for such a long drive.
When you pulled into the driveway, you noticed that the “For Sale” sign had been removed from the front lawn. This was your home now and you were determined to live your life as normal as possible from now on.
After your father passed away, you left the flat lands of Oklahoma for the mountains of Colorado. There was just something about that cool mountain air. But you didn’t want to live IN the mountains, you didn’t want to be alone so moving into a neighborhood NEAR the mountains was a good compromise.
A man and, what you assumed to be, his young son were playing catch in the front yard. The boy tossed the baseball to his father but the man wasn’t paying attention. He was too busy looking at your car which happened everywhere you went.
You and your father had rebuilt that car and restored it to its former glory. It was your dream car…a 1967 Pontiac GTO in midnight blue. The way the paint reflected the light, the car almost looked purple. It was a gorgeous car.
The car in your neighbor’s driveway was impressive also. It was a 1967 Chevy Impala, black.
“DAD!! You missed!” The boy shouted.
“Hold on, son. You see that car? She must be our new neighbor. Let’s go say hello.” The man said.
Reaching for the sky, you stretched until some of the tightness in your shoulders went away. You then saw your new neighbor.
“Fuck me.” You whispered under your breath.
He was very handsome with medium brown hair, a well-groomed beard, and green eyes. As he came closer, you saw a splash of freckles across his nose and his young son was a carbon copy of his father.
You smiled warmly as they came closer.
“Hi there! I’m your new neighbor. I’m y/f/n y/l/n.”You extended your hand to shake his.
After you introduced yourself, the man had a slightly confused look on his face that quickly disappeared.
He extended his hand for you to shake. “I’m Dean and this is my son Charlie.”
“It’s really nice to meet you.” You said.
Charlie interjected himself. “Dad missed the ball because he was staring at your car.”
“Charlie…” Said Dean through clenched teeth.
“Ah, well I do get that a lot. You wanna sit in it?” You asked.
Charlie’s eyes went wide. “Sure!”
You opened the car door so Charlie could sit on the driver’s side.
Dean pointed at the car. “That is a nice car. ’69?” He asked.
You bit down on your lower lip to keep from smiling. “It’s a ’67 actually, like your Impala.”
“Impressive…I don’t know a lot of women that would know that to look at it.” He said.
“Well, we do exist.” You said, a little sarcastically.
Dean smiled at you and said softly. “Yes, I guess you do.”
When he realized he was staring, he quickly snapped out of the trance he was in.
“Um, yeah so um, do you have furniture coming or anything? I’m happy to help.” He said.
“Oh the moving truck is coming tomorrow so I just have the bare essentials for tonight. Thank you for the offer, I may take you up on that.” You said.
“Well, we’ll let you get settled. Just knock when the truck comes…Charlie!! Come on, let’s let y/n settle in to her new house.” Said Dean.
As they walked away, you heard Charlie tell his dad, “Dad, you were staring at her.”
Dean narrowed his eyes and furrowed his brow. “No I wasn’t…get the ball.”
“Yes you were, Dad. I saw you.” Said Charlie.
You shook your head back and forth then smiled. They both seemed really sweet.
Three Months Later
You had settled nicely into your new home. The final box had been unpacked and you were adjusting to your new surroundings and your new neighbors. Although there was something that bothered you about Dean’s house.
Every so often, not a lot but every now and again, you noticed that the basement light would flicker. It wasn’t all the time but when it did, it was always at the same time, which you thought was strange.
Everything else seemed to be fine so you didn’t look too closely at it.
You really did like Dean and you adored Charlie. They were your friends, so you contemplated, at least telling Dean about your past, how your father really died, and why you left your home state.
One Saturday morning, all of the windows were open and you could hear music coming from their house. It sounded like…Asia – Heat of the Moment.
You giggled a little bit and thought to yourself, “Really Dean, Asia?”
Dean had a deep booming voice.
“Rise and shine, Charlie!!” He said, loudly but playfully.
After doing some housework, you heard a knock on your door. Walking down the hall from the bedroom into the kitchen, you saw Dean standing at the side door through the screen. He was leaning against the door frame.
“Hey there. What can I do for ya?” You asked, opening the screen door.
“Hey, I was wondering if you’d like to come over for dinner tonight? I thought maybe we could tell Charlie, um…well, about us.” He said, shyly.
Charlie didn’t know that about a month after you moved in, you and Dean started to hang out with each other after he went to sleep.
He’d come over for a drink, sometimes a movie, or a lot of the time, the two of you would just talk, and the relationship just sort of happened.
Charlie’s mom had passed away three years ago and it had just been the two of them since then. Obviously you weren’t trying to get in the way of their relationship and you DEFINITELY weren’t trying to replace his mom but you really did like the both of them and Charlie deserved to know the truth…they both did.
You snaked your arms around Dean’s neck, let your fingers run through his soft brown hair, and leaned in to kiss him. The bristles of his beard tickled your chin and you smiled in between his kisses. You really were smitten with him.
“I’d love to…I’ll bring you guys a special dessert.” You said.
A shy smile extended across Dean’s face. “Awesome…oh and I’m not much of a cook so I hope you’re ok with burgers. Alright? Ok, good talk.” He said, as he smacked you on the ass and turned around to walk back home.
You were going to come clean tonight.
Walking over to Dean’s, you remembered the first time you saw the last name on the mailbox…Winchester. Dean Winchester. All hunters knew that name, that family, his brother Sam, their father John, and their mother Mary.
They were famous in the world of hunting. Your family name stayed under the radar. Sure, you and your dad had some pretty big hunts and cases but nothing compared to the Winchesters.
Charlie answered when you knocked.
“Y/n!!!” He said, excitedly.
“Hey buddy!” You replied.
Charlie saw you holding the pie in your hands.
“Oh you brought Dad’s favorite.” He said.
“I did? Well I hope you guys like it, I made it from scratch.” You said.
“Dad’s always eating pie…he’s out back, come on!” He said, tugging on your t-shirt.
The three of you had a nice dinner together filled with a lot of laughs and you breathed a sigh of relief when Charlie said he was ok that you were his dad’s girlfriend.
The child like smile Dean had on his face as he was about to taste the pie made you smile. Before he could take his first bite, the lights flickered.
He looked up at the kitchen light as it continued to flicker. “Son of a bitch.” He boomed.
“Dad, language!” Shouted Charlie.
“Not now, Charlie.” He growled.
You stood up and backed away from the kitchen table. “Where’s the salt, Dean?” You asked.
“What? How do you--?” He started to say.
“The salt, Dean…NOW!!!” You shouted.
Dean got the bag of salt from underneath the kitchen sink and you had Charlie stand in an open area in the dining room, while his dad drew a salt circle around him. Then he pulled out two shotguns from underneath the couch in the living room filled with rock salt.
“Charlie…buddy, don’t move from this spot, do you understand?” You asked him, looking into his scared eyes.
He nodded.
Standing back to back, holding the shotguns, Dean asked, “Is there something you wanna tell me?”
As fast as you could, you explained yourself. “Ok, so I come from a family of hunters too, nothing like yours of course but I left Oklahoma after my father died saving me from a nest of vampires. It was just me and him, my whole life and when he died, I felt like I couldn’t hunt without him.” You said.
Low moans and hisses were emanating through the walls as the lights continued to turn on and off.
“I can’t believe you’re a hunter. That’s why when you introduced yourself, your name sounded familiar to me!” Shouted Dean.
Charlie stood petrified inside the salt circle. “Dad, what’s going on?”
“It’s alright, buddy. We’re gonna be alright.” Said Dean.
Two apparitions came through the wall and headed straight for you when you blasted them with rock salt.
“Are y-you m-mad?” You asked, while trying to catch your breath.
“Mad? I’m only mad that I didn’t get to eat my pie! As far as you being a hunter, well…I gotta say I’m a little turned on.” He said.
In the middle of a life or death situation, Dean managed to make you blush.
“What does that mean, Dad?” Asked Charlie.
In unison, you and Dean yelled, “Not now, Charlie!”
“When we’re done with this, we’re gonna have a talk.” Dean pointed his finger at you.
“But you’re not mad?” You asked with a slight smile.
Dean smiled at you, his bright green eyes looked like fresh blades of grass as he leaned in to kiss your forehead.
“Nah, I’m not mad sweetheart. Now let’s kill these things so I can eat my pie.”

The 2+2 was a special high-performance package offered for the big body, but shorter wheelbase Catalina that was first offered in 1964 for $291.00. Consider this the “big brother” of the GTO. The package consists of bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter, special blend carpeting, and if you checked a few additional boxes, a 421 tri-power V8 backed by a 4-speed manual or 3-speed Hydramatic transmission. A long list of performance options could turn a comfy cruiser into a hot one!
The 2+2 package would continue for several more years in both hardtop and convertible bodies. Today, these cars are among the most sought-after Big Body Muscle Machines ever produced. Production would be a mere 7,998 in its inaugural year, 11,521 in ’65, 6,383 for ’66 and just 1,768 in ’67. Think about it...when was the last time you saw a Pontiac 2+2 up close and in person? This year you find an entire row of them at the MCACN show.

10 Forgotten Muscle Cars That Deserve to Be Restored

Source: General Motors We all know the story; it started in 1964 with the Ford Mustang. No, wait — I mean the Plymouth Barracuda. Or the Pontiac GTO. Or was it earlier with the Pontiac Catalina SD? The ’50s Dodge D-500 maybe? Debating the origin of the muscle car is like debating over the first rock and roll record; everyone you talk to has a different opinion, and no one is exactly wrong. Let’s just say that by the early ’60s, a generation coming of age fell in love with high-performance midsize cars coming out of Detroit, and for a few brief years, performance ruled the day. Naturally, the good old days seem to look better with each passing year, and as the book was written on the muscle car, a fair amount of contenders fell by the wayside.

1. 1964 Studebaker Avanti R3
Source: Auctions America The Avanti isn’t generally counted among muscle cars, but then, Studebaker was never exactly considered a performance powerhouse to begin with. But the fiberglass Avanti had a long hood, short rear deck, and 289-cubic-inch V8 a full two years before the Ford Mustang did. In 1964 (after production officially ended), Studebaker bored out nine V8s to 304 cubic inches, slapped a Paxton supercharger on them, and dropped them into remaining Avantis. The result was a 171-mile-per-hour rocket, which the company claimed made it the fastest production car in America. This R3 was sold by Auctions America in 2010 for $96,250. With the collector market being what it is today, good luck finding one this cheap ever again.

2. 1965 Pontiac 2+2
Source: General Motors As far as classic muscle cars go, the ’65-’67 GTO is remembered to be about as big as they came. But with the success of the GTO, Pontiac wanted to take its go-fast formula to an even bigger car, which became the ’65-’67 2+2. Based on the full-size Catalina two-door, the 2+2 had its own unique 338-horsepower 421-cubic-inch V8, and in High Output guise, power jumped to 376 ponies, which when tuned right could rocket from zero to 60 in a mind-bending 3.9 seconds. Bigger, plusher, and often faster than its smaller stablemate, the 2+2 deserves a lot more love from speed freaks.

3. 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Source: Ford For ’60s Ford products, the Mercury Comet was about as basic as they came. Closely based on the Ford Falcon, the ’64-’65 Comet could be livened up with Ford’s famous 289-cubic-inch V8. But for those who wanted more from their Mercurys, Ford built 50 Comet Cyclones for the dragstrip, complete with fiberglass hood, fenders, doors and front bumper, plexiglass windows, and the same 425-horsepower 427 V8 found in the Shelby Cobra. In ’66, Mercury introduced the production Comet GT with the 390 V8, and while they’re capable compact muscle cars, they couldn’t hope to match the insanity of their big block predecessor.

4. 1968 Ford Ranchero 500
Source: Ford It’s been long overshadowed by Chevy’s iconic El Camino, but the Ford Ranchero was America’s first car-based Ute. And while Chevy was offering the 396 V8 in its muscle trucks, Ford upped the ante in ’68 and made its restyled Ranchero available with a 335-horsepower Cobra Jet 428 V8. Unfortunately, a lack of weight over the rear wheels made the hot Rancheros a handful to drive, so very few were built with Ford’s biggest motor. While it seems like every surviving El Camino happens to be an SS model, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen a Cobra Jet Ranchero. Come to think of it, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen any Ranchero.

5. 1969 Chevy Kingswood 427
Source: General Motors Back in the ’60s, you could order virtually any option you wanted on a car, and companies would actually build it for you. So imagine you’ve got a growing family, and your Corvette just can’t handle them. What to do? Buy a Chevy Kingswood station wagon with Rally wheels, hideaway headlights, seating for seven, and the same 390-horsepower V8 found in your ‘Vette. Only 546 buyers opted for the big V8 in ’69, but a number of 427 Kingswoods spent the next decade making their mark on the drag strip.

6. 1969 Oldsmobile Rallye 350
Source: General Motors When gearheads think of outrageous muscle cars from 1969, the Pontiac GTO Judge easily sits at the top of the list. But while the Judge has gone on to become a legend, Oldsmobile’s analog, the Rallye 350, is all but forgotten. Like the Judge (at least at first) it was offered in one outrageous color (Sebring Yellow), had color-matched wheels and bumpers, a spoiler, and a fiberglass hood. And compared to Olds’s top-dog 442, the car’s 310-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 made it significantly lighter, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in seven seconds and run the quarter mile in a respectable 15.27 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Just 3,500 Rallye 350s were built, making it one of the more obscure muscle cars to ever come from GM.

7. 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
Source: Ford Half a century on, the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird and Dodge Daytona get all the love when it comes to NASCAR homologation specials. But in 1969, Ford tried its hand at aerodynamics too and built the Torino Talladega. Starting with a Torino Sportsroof, Ford worked with the Holman-Moody race shop to design a sleeker, longer front clip and rear fascia for the car. The Talladega was honed in the wind tunnel — a relative novelty for the era — and powered by the 429-cubic-inch V8 found in the Boss Mustang. Production was over by March; Ford only built 754 of them and they were barely advertised, but the slippery cars dominated during the ’69 season, winning 29 races. In 1970, however, the 200-mile-per-hour Superbird ruled NASCAR, and the Talladega’s time in the spotlight was over. Today, the Talladega (and near-identical Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II) are bargains on the collector market compared to the beak-nosed Mopars.

8. 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ
Source: General Motors The second-generation Grand Prix is largely remembered for its role in popularizing the Personal Luxury Coupe segment, but in its early days, it was one of the hottest cars on the street. With a long hood (the longest hood of any production car in ’69, in fact) and short deck, the Grand Prix was available with Pontiac’s 390-horsepower 428-cubic-inch V8, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Its combination of luxury and power made it the Grand Prix massive hit for Pontiac; within a few years, any semblance of performance would be gone.

9. 1970 Chrysler Hurst 300
Source: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles As early as 1970, Chrysler die-hards were feeling nostalgic for the 300-letter series, which ended in 1965. The 300-series carried on, but performance had taken a back seat as mid-sized muscle cars had picked up the go-fast mantle. Chrysler tried to recapture the magic for ’70 by outfitting a 300 coupe with the interior from an Imperial, a fiberglass hood and decklid, a 375-horsepower 440-cubic-inch V8, and a Torque-Flite automatic to handle all that power. At 18.5 feet long and 4,400 pounds, the big Chrysler could still make zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. With just 500 built, the Hurst 300s rank as one of the rarest Mopar muscle cars of all time.

10. 1971 AMC SC/360 Hornet
Source: Chris Andrews Productions via YouTube In the ’60s, AMC’s red, white, and blue Rebel Machine and SC/Rambler muscle cars failed to move the sales needle for America’s last independent automaker, but they sure caused a scene wherever they went. For 1970, the company had introduced the compact Hornet and Gremlin to replace the Rambler, and with them came the SC/360 Hornet. With an available 285-horsepower 360-cubic-inch V8 under the hood, the small Hornet could hit 60 from a standstill in 6.7 seconds, and run the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 97 miles per hour. But in 1970, displacement still ruled the day, and despite being cheaper than a Plymouth Duster 340, AMC found just 784 buyers for its smallest muscle car. We think it’s aged remarkably well, and would love to take one of these ’70s-era sleepers to the drag strip.
