ooh, I hadn't thought about that, but I like it! like, I think Grim fills the role of Yuu's pokemon (or vice-versa) (somehow) but I kind of love the idea that he's some kind of far-removed Paradox or alternate-timeline version of another pokemon or something. honestly, there would probably be a lot of theories about what exactly he is! mostly it involves throwing a lot of pokeballs at him and seeing what happens.

I'm reading an Aubrey-Maturin book again (Post Captain), and after having watched the Hornblower TV series, I think I have a new appreciation for Patrick O’Brian's choice to give the patriotic Royal Navy himbo main character a best friend who’s an ex-member of the United Irishmen. Is it the most historically likely thing? Probably not, but man, nothing makes me appreciate a non-imperial perspective in a work of fiction like experiencing a similar story that didn't have one.

The thing about watching White Collar after Leverage is that everything about the show can be summed up as “What if Leverage were more by the book?”

That makes it a less interesting show in a number of ways, but it also means that the core interpersonal relationships are way more unhinged. These characters start out obsessed with each other and only grow more intertwined from there, and while (so far) the show absolutely acknowledges that, it doesn’t spend much time addressing it. It just is. The intensity of the relationship between Peter and Neal is at the heart of every single episode, but White Collar is much more interested in being a by-the-numbers procedural than in examining what any of that means. All of which results in a completely normal action-drama about a straitlaced FBI guy who's entirely devoted to his wife and his criminal (and they to him), and why would you want to talk about any of that when we have the bad guy of the week to catch?

In playing it straight -- in not exploring how their relationship came to be, but simply saying "this is how it is because this is who they are" -- it actually becomes this incredibly kinky dynamic where Peter playfully lords his power over Neal, and Neal eats it up, reveling in the attention. And all of the trappings of the show refuse to acknowledge that dimension of it, playing it as superficial. (Peter's a law-and-order, by-the-book kind of guy! Neal's a criminal! They joke around! Of course they're going to go on about Peter having him locked up, controlling his every move, watching everything he does, approving his extra-curricular activities... you know, like you do with a prisoner! Haha!) Don't worry that we had Neal tell Peter that he's the only person he trusts in episode 10 of season 1. That's just because Neal doesn't trust anyone, because he's a criminal and so are all of his friends and we all know that criminals aren't trustworthy. Not like these fine, upstanding FBI agents. Definitely don't think about what that implies given the aforementioned kinkiness of the relationship. Haha, we sure don't! And all the while El is just there enabling and enjoying watching her boys go at it, while occasionally inserting herself in the middle of whatever they have going on. But only because she's the Supportive Wife in a bog-standard Loving Heterosexual Marriage, of course.

It's like the show set out to be just bland and boring enough to prance along that razor edge between naiveté and plausible deniability, dripping with innuendo while looking you right in the face and saying "What? It's not that deep."

And then immediately turning around and doing it all over again, but harder. Just in case you missed what they're absolutely not saying.

like of course wrath if otto is also a debt slave like pride if otto, but pride if otto's his own flavor of unique just bc hes forced to stay in proximity to subaru when he either may not want to or he feels similar to subaru (who goes "maybe in another life we couldve made good friends, but this Isnt that life")!! seeing how jaded and empty pride if otto is is super fascinating, bc you can kind of see the origins of it in main otto's tendency for cynicism and ruthlessness !!

but also on another level i feel like pride otto would be soooo confused and disgusted hearing about main otto. pride otto might be out here like "so not only are you friends with this guy but youre his boytoy too???? lmfao you loser" HAH

but yeah i think itd be fun for them to meet. pride if otto, the otto who never made friends and only learned to harden his heart and be forced to be an accomplice to horrible crimes...... main otto, the otto who made friends and is so so painfully devoted but it drives him to do drastic things some times.... crimes in the name of love versus being forced to assist in it.... like main otto learned how to make friends, learned the power of friendship with other people, but his loyalty is "poisoning" him while pride otto supplied the poison that kills julius...... ough......... and pride otto dies at the end...... all alone.... poisoned by other people, poisoned by what he had to do.....

but also i think my favorite bit of pride otto trivia is that word of god thing that pride otto took advantage of the fire and went to go kill russell fellow before he died.... specifically to avenge frufoo, his ground dragon.... like. ough. pain. absolute pain. pride ottos last act was to kill his main abuser??? to avenge his one and only friend????? im gonna bawl my eyes out HAHHA. but it seems that the power of friendship may have briefly won for a second there.... :,))) like im sure ottos most definitely killing russell fellow also bc thats Literally the guy that enslaved him but - the way its specifically noted that ottos main reason was Frufoo. im sobbing on the floor.

anyway i completely forgot where i was going with this but in conclusion pride otto is such a guy. 20 seconds of screentime??? dude stomped over my heart in 20 seconds. and if he met main otto i think he'd either go "wtf is wrong with you why would you do all of this for subaru??? him??? that CLOWN???? why???" or pride otto would wanna strangle main otto for being so lucky HAH. pride otto learns frufoo is still alive and well in main route and pride otto instantly launches himself at main otto like a feral cat -

So I've been replaying Triangle Strategy, and unlike some of my other replays, I'm actually rewatching the cutscenes as well instead of skipping them.

And something I noticed, is that even up to chapter 10, Avlora seems extremely hesitant to defy or stand up to Gustadolph in any way. And the times she does question his judgment, she doesn't keep pressing once Gustadolph shoots her judgement down.

I don't have any screenshot examples as I neglected to grab screenshots (and I'm feeling mentally drained atm, but some examples are how she loath to admit her defeat to Wolffort to Gusta and when she's saying Wolffort is still a threat when he tells her to rest just before Roland fakes his death) but it honestly makes the scene where she pledges loyalty to Cordelia so much more impactful, as not only is she swearing loyalty, it's also the first time she truly defies Gustadolph, even if he wasn't there at the moment.

Also, although I forgot to grab screenshots of her not defying Gustadolph, I did grab this interaction because ever since my first playthrough this specific interaction has been on my mind and wondering what it's implications mean for Avlora.

Like what do you mean "this I know" Avlora. Is this about how easily Gustadolph shuts down your judgments even when you've the right idea? Especially with the "freedom is given, it's taken" line.

I am tired atm but I definitely need to go back and rewatch a bunch of cutscenes with this in mind.

tbqh it's weird as hell to me that there's this given understanding about fictional aliens that they'd be surprised or confused by adaptability, but like, as far as we know and understand that is a fundamental quality of life itself not life on earth. In order to become a spacefaring species any spacefaring alien would've had to survive whatever space threw at them for billions of years as well as whatever their planet in specific threw at them, even the 'good' planet we know about is pretty fucking hostile to life. It's just implausible to me that like, among all the possible sapient species we'd be unique or interesting for the level to which we have the ability to adapt to situations, something that any biological creature of any origin would also need to survive long enough as a species to figure out how space works.
