i mean i can only recommend it if you know what you’re getting yourself into? despite what some people believe, twst is not an otome game and i know gacha mechanics aren’t for everyone, but writing and character wise, i’m having a lot of fun (these guys are on my mind 24/7)

It's still early in the event, but I'm already trying to think about what Hot Topic Issue this year's Halloween event might tackle (assuming it follows the precedent set by GloMasq and Playful Land). Here's the theory I present to you: the conflict will be about escapism and where to draw that divide between fantasy and reality. Why do I think that? Because there are lots of parallels between our shiny new guy on the block, Skully, and us, Twst fans.

Book 7 presents a similar idea when Lilia and Malleus discuss the life cycle of Gao-Gao Drago-kun, how short it is, and how convenient it would be if the virtual pet could live forever in a fantasy world. In the same book, Yuu has finally found a potential route home... meaning an end to their story and their time in their current world. Read another way, it can be said that we, the Twst fans/players, are like Malleus, not wanting anything about our lives in Twisted Wonderland to change. We want to stay here among these characters we have come to love and grow close to, not return to our boring mundane lives in our original worlds... in reality. Likewise, similar points of comparison can be drawn between these themes and Lost in the Book with Nightmare Before Christmas, even as early as part 1.

Now in this allegory, Skully represents us, the average Twst fans. Here's the parallels I noted:

Skully is notably a first year, which matches up with the grade level that Yuu (the player self-insert/POV character) is assigned to

Skully attends a school where his peers don’t understand him or his interests. This mimics the experience of some Twst fans, who may be misunderstood even within the anime fandom. How many times have people joked “Oh, you like the Disney dating sim?”/assumed that Twst is cringe? Can you talk to fans of traditional Disney about Twst? Twst may be somewhat niche in your immediate area. Chances are, you have to retreat to online avenues to find like-minded fans. In this way, Twst fans may feel isolated or not understood.

He does not like to talk about school because he doesn't have many people who understand him, perhaps due to his eccentricities. Again, this may not directly translate to all Twst fans, but rather it can be very relatable to those who lack social connections and seek to fulfill that through fandom or escaping into a fantasy world.

Skully is an otaku for Halloween. And what are we, as Twst fans, if not also otaku?

He looks mysterious but has excitable reactions. The behavior reminds me of someone who can be very sociable online or in special circumstances but might come off completely differently in real life or initially due to how their face looks and how they dress.

The strongest parallel, however, is the fact that he, like Yuu (again, the player self-insert character) ALSO gets isekai'd... into the world of The Nightmare Before Christmas. And what happens in this world that Skully gets isekai'd to? He... 1) meets lots of new people--people that don't know him in the "real" world, so he is free to act however he wants around them, maybe even befriend them, 2) gets to meet his Halloween idol, Jack-sama, 3) gets to be praised by his idol, and 4) (presumably) helps out his idol with putting together this year's Halloween. THESE LINE UP ALMOST EXACTLY WITH WHAT YUU DOES WHEN THEY'RE ISEKAI'D INTO TWISTED WONDERLAND... Yuu, who represents you, THE TWST FAN. You, as a Twst fan, 1) meet and potentially befriend these new characters (and maybe even explicitly made an OC to act however you like in your place as the one meeting these characters), 2) hone in on your favorite(s), 3/4) hyperfixate on the intimate voice lines and the moments you have with your favorite(s). It's total wish fulfillment for both Skully and the average Twst fan. In other words, Skully will get lost in living the fantasy that is literally being transported into the world of his Favorite Thing Ever, just like we, the Twst fans, escape to Twisted Wonderland. In the book/Twst, you can be yourself or whoever you want to be. But what happens when that peace and comfort is about to be taken away? Perhaps that's when Skully will snap 🤔 refusing to return to his old life, where he was awkward and misunderstood... wanting to stay in this endless Halloween night forever and ever. Maybe he even tries to prevent the NRC students from leaving too, since he has now formed a friendship (?) with them? Like, he's trying to keep them trapped in this fantasy of his (very Malleus-core of him, honestly). Then it would be up to us to try and knock some sense into Skully, reminding him that there are things in the "real" world to look forward to as well.

Looking back at previous Halloweens, the conflicts presented usually tie back to something relating to the Disney counterpart's own identities. For example, Frollo (in the stage version) lost his younger brother to sin and pinned the blame on an entire group of people. Rollo lost his younger brother to sin and now seeks to eliminate that sin (magic) from the world. Honest John and Gideon worked for a shady guy and lured away children, even though they themselves were terrified of what would become of those kids. Fellow and Gidel are similarly forced to do this dirty work because they are so impoverished they need the job, even if their boss disrespects them. I think my theory about what Skully's whole conflict will be could work from this angle too. The character he is twisted from, Jack Skellington, is known to be somewhat naive and an idealist. Jack pursues Christmas with all of his undead heart, sure that it will return the "spark" that Halloween has since lost. This could be reflected in Skully, our twisted!Jack, in his desire to pursue Halloween--or, more specifically, this novel world where his passion is reinforced and he has a place in it. He would be naive to the world he snubbed in favor of this new one, deeming this new world superior (like how Jack thought the "new" Christmas would enhance the "old" Halloween).

Fandom's Rigid Standards

In my previous post about issues I have towards the Starboy craze, I briefly discussed about how most human Star designs tend to just stick with the Jack Frost "inspired" design over creating their own original designs for him.

Most fan designs try to stay loyal to the rather infamous piece of concept art.

While they made changes based on their own preferences, they kept major core elements like the glowing gold hair, floating, cape, and being white. However, what they neglected, or rather leave out is that this early version of Star can also shapeshift like Genie and Maui. Also, another factor is that this version Star was her grandfather's spirit as an early version of the story has him passing away instead of her father.

The reason why most people didn't know about these early ideas was because they only heard about the Starboy and Villain Couple ones from the more vocally outraged fangirls who cried about "being robbed".

This tweet in particular only adding fuel to the dying fire as most people would just express disappointment to the film, but this only give them an excuse to dislike it even more. Majority of people are so anti-Disney that they would even fact check from official sources from the people who made the film and only listened to the ones who have seen it and have totally not biased opinions on it.

Anyway, even with info about the actual early version of the film being out, most of them just stick with the love story idea. An idea that was the result from the lack of context and spite from said lack of context.

Coming back to the topic of human Star just being Jack Frost but yellow, that also brought up about how fandom has this awful habit of only caring about characters if they are attractive and white. We literally see this behavior with Magnifico and that this is also happening towards a character that doesn't exist says a lot. The fact that most human Star designs just colored Jack Frost yellow is proof of this.

Hell, back then, Disney themselves considered making a non conventionally looking love interest back when Tangled was in early production. Bastion was made to be your non standard prince.

Heck, an even early version of Tangled had the "prince" look like this.

There are people who genuinely like non conventionally looking characters for their looks. Beast is literally known for making people prefer his animal form than human form for crying out loud. You literally have zero restrictions to design a human or even monster Star. But instead, y'all ironically did this meme.

Y'all accuse Disney for not going with this early alternative design for Asha for "not being conventionally Disney".

But y'all also thought this ain't too pretty so you "borrowed' from the most conventionally good looking character from a different film.

Now, this is the part where I focus on the issue regarding Asha and her "romance". Well, lack there of.

Someone once said that people only like a work for the tropes they like being present over how they were executed, comparing how ads are recommending you to buy a book that lists off tropes you're into. L To fandom, the presence of tropes only matter.

When you think of Disney romances, you might thought of the princesses. And ONLY the princesses because their films have romance as a major factor. However, romances in Disney is notoriously bad, especially in their older films. It's not until in the later films that we got a more proper romance with Naveen and Flynn/Eugene. Romance requires both characters to be equally treated. In regards to the "potential" romance he has with Asha, there's this underlying feeling that Asha is treated like a vector for the reader/writer to insert themselves as.

Most romances, especially ones made for women, always centered on the main lead with the "protagonist" being in situations to ensure they get together. Majority of romances are made to be like a dating sim. There's nothing bad about going on fictional dates with a fictional partner but the issue here is that how the protagonist is barely a character of their own right. They are made to be relatable so the reader can insert themselves into, with any personality they have being treated as traits and quirks. Even with examples where both the protagonist and the love interest are both main leads, there's likely more emphasis is put onto the love interest.

And Asha is being somewhat unintentionally treated like this, especially in fiction where Starboy is the focal character is really upsetting. I get that Asha wasn't a great character but she shouldn't be treated like this. Or any character at all.

Asha being rewritten to be a completely different character to the point of being given a different name is just so jarring. That isn't Asha anymore. Just like the concept art above, she's small core traces of what was her there, but it's mostly all fan interpretation.

And this, to me at least, are the vibes I'm getting from. Wish being "remade" into something that it isn't. Being made to cater to a niche demographic whose tastes are just plain bad. I'm not one to judge people's preferences but disregarding the concept of a deceased family member who became magical shapeshifting creature from space for a more generic love story where you could self insert yourself into?

This isn't to say to giving Asha a love interest or making Star a human aren't bad ideas. I do in fact find the early concept interesting and I was initially neutral towards Starboy until that's what most of this "fandom" consists of.

This isn't the Wish fandom. This is the Starboy fandom.

AU where, after the all-stars season flops, the Total Drama network decides to turn its' attention elsewhere for some quick money; gaming. They release a videogame where the player competes in a fictional season of Total Drama with the OG cast, essentially a y/n self-insert fanfiction in videogame form.

To avoid having to pay royalties to the contestants they use fake names and alter the designs of the 'campers' (I'm thinking something like the TRD names i.e. Heather=Heavely, Courtney=Courtlyn ect.) but since Chris is part of the network he remains himself in the game and voices his own lines.

It plays like a dating sim for the most part, with minigames for the 'challenges', and different character events based on who the player interacts with the most. Plus random and scripted plot events. Essentially a choose-your-own-adventure with some key plot points.

The game turns out to be a huge success, especially with superfans like Sierra who love the idea of competing in a season, but since it's made by Total Drama (in universe, I imagine TD is an up-and-coming top brand akin to Disney) it's super buggy/shoddy/unoptimized as they cut production costs to save money.

Since it's so popular, a lot of the actual OG case know about it.

As a canonical gamer, Noah is one of the first to hear about it and despises it on principle. He decides to make a hate-mod for the game out of spite. It makes Chris bald.

He enlists Gwen to help with the visual changes since she's a bit of an artist and more than happy to draw bald Chris. Noah uses his coding abilities to essentially overhaul the games code. Maybe they even ask some of their friends to re-voice some of their counterparts lines.

It becomes the most popular mod in the community, the fans are freaking out because the new voices sound so accurate to the show and the game runs so much better now. But no one knows who made the mod outside of their username, so the creator(s) are anonymous.

At some point someone in the community asks the mod creator why they went through all the effort of reoptimizing the game just to make Chris bald, and Noah replies with a selfie of himself and Gwen flipping the bird to the camera with the caption "Fuck Chris McLean" (or something along those lines with whatever characters you want to imagine involved) and the community goes wild.

Rules: Must be female. Should never answer the door to strangers or old women. She should have 7 children with the same partner. She should know all her children traits. Complete her lifetime wish.

Child rules: Must have one negative trait (commitment issues, over emotional, rebellious, clumsy, unstable, klepto, etc.)

Generation 2: Cinderella 🥿

Twisted Wonderland is an official Disney game made by a Japanese company. The game releases in 2020 in JP and later 2022 in the US ( But I've been playing this game since 2021 so yah, I'm playing the Japanese version )

It's a visual novel with rhythm, turn based and gacha system. This game actually has more little systems but idk how to tell 😅

The characters in this game are based on the Disney characters ( most of them are villains ) such as Queen of heart, Evil queen and Maleficent. In some characters are based on a background Disney character like The card soldier or Ursula's eels

The summary of the game story : Yuu aka. your character has somehow Isekai into the world of twisted wonderland. Yuu magically found themselves in all boy high school names Night Raven College ( NRC for short )

The headmaster is trying to send you back but he can't, so the main character is stuck here and needs to live in an abandoned dorm along with a magical beast you got named Grim as a partner. MC needs to live there for a while until The headmaster is fine the way to send you home

The main story of each chapter you need to solve the problem of each dorm in follow. And each Dorm is based on different Disney villains

Octavinelle = Ursula

Scarabia = Jafar

Pomefiore = Evil queen

Ignihyde = Hades

Not a lot of boy centered otome mobile games out there in English, which means recommendations are usually bad because within that limited pool, none of them are actually alike beyond being a probable attraction to men. Here's what I played in the desperate hope of fulfilling the same hole Obey Me did for me.

Love and Deepspace: the new girl on the block. Allegedly breaking ground by being for girls and you beat up aliens. Extremely well made, tons of money poured into it, boring. Lots of reviews in that "I'm giving it 5 stars because I want to prove women are worth this kind of investment and/or are interested in action dating sims!" vein.

If I'm honest, I've realized no brown skinned dateables = no interest, so there was no chance I would care about this game. I tried though!

Twisted Wonderland: Despite how often I heard "if you liked OM, you should play Twisted Wonderland," the two aren't alike beyond surface level. It's an all right time passer, especially the vignettes. I have more fun mentally comparing them than anything - I could probably write a whole post about how despite similar premises, they're clearly not even after the same demographic, plus all the things each excel at, PLUS all the things I wish OM had copied. Why the hell does the Disney property understand the importance of deranged anime boy diversity, but the fucking 7 deadly sin dating simulator does not?

I also enjoyed watching my character tier-list change in real time. It starts off like I think these guys are the hottest, so I'll probably like them the most (Leona, Jamil, Malleus, Professor Male!Cruella) -> Okay, seeing this guy in action made me realize how cute he is (Azul) -> hahaha holy shit, this guy rocks (Rook, Azul, Jade) -> Your good looks will not save you from dropping tiers after that stupid story (Leona) ->...but a horny-coded vignette might (Leona and Vil)

Also, the story is kind of terrible, so I've been ignoring it. "What if we gave all of our hot guys tragic backstories that contradict the premise of the game (Disney villains won in this universe and are idolized for their actions) and were just kind of. Needlessly pathetic. In an embarrassing way."

So I'm doing a Disney antagonist crossover save on the Sims 4, and in it, I included the following Disney antagonists...

•Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty)

•Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

•Yzma (The Emperor's New Groove)

•Kronk (The Emperor's New Groove) (Technically, he's a redeemed antagonist, but I included him anyway)

•Denahi (Brother Bear) (Technically, he's not an antagonist, but I felt like including him anyway)

•John Silver (Treasure Planet)

I also included a kitten-fied version of Morph (also from Treasure Planet) in this household, because why not?

I also put four of the characters into 2 separate relationships; I made Maleficent and Ursula romantic partners, and I made Denahi and Silver romantic partners (Wacky pairings, I know).

So Ursula asked Maleficent out on a date after a WooHoo session, right? Fine by me. I select the activities and location, and they're all set.

They arrive at the location, and somehow, Silver tagged along with them??? Like, uh, you're not supposed to be here??? You're supposed to be at home with your partner and Morph!

There is a possibly he tagged along because he was selected when Ursula asked Maleficent out on that date, but still, dude...come on.

On a side note, the next time this occurs, should both couples end up going on a double date?

You know what, you get two sims stories for the price of one. Time for my old save backstory <3 (this one died to a broken update after the infants </3 but it was the same challenge from before)

Same premise of sisters who were different and all that cliche, but this time they fucking hated each other (this was them getting ready for prom <3)

This is them together at prom <3 I made the theme of the party around fantasy things. So while the one in pink was dresses as some kind of fairy the other was dresses as a demon or something (I never said I was deep when doing things on sims alright?)

They were getting along better at this point, Jocelyn (the one in pink) seeing that maybe her sister was not just a rebel and that maybe their mother was kinda shit

This is them, the day they were created along with their mom (who was very traditional, wanted to arrange a marriage for their kids, was raising them alone cause her husband died. She was a very powerful and rich lawyer)

But then, the boyfriend cheated and they fought about it. The guy was from a very powerful family and the one in pink was dating him only to please their mom, her sister knew it and hated it. Cause she actually liked the guy and saw her sister was manipulative for dong this (not saying who was right or wrong, they were teens and had some big emotions)

The years went by and Jocelyn settled down with a guy who her mom choose for her, they didn't love each other but it was a pleasant enough marriage, even if she was often frustrated with the fact she had to be a housewife. Which is the reason why she hooked up with her high school ex on her bachelorette party <3

The guy was also still dating her sister, so yeah he fucking sucks. Anyway, the baby in the picture was the product of that affair, she was a real cutie.

Then my save died and I never got to finish her story. Which is why I'm doing the challenge again (I have a hard record with legacy challenges alright, the longest I got once was 4th gen on a disney challenge on the sims 3 and then my pc died, I never went past gen 3 since that day... maybe I got cursed)

That the game is a dating sim. Not exactly the fandom that did this, but when the first promotional art came out, a lot of people who didn't understand Japanese saw hot anime boys and immediately assumed Disney Japan were making a dating sim of famous Disney Villains. Both of these are misconceptions, the characters are NOT the actual villains turned anime boy, and the game is NOT a dating sim.

There is this old promo video trailer for the series with older character designs that got some attention on Tumblr before the anime actually came out. When the trailer hit Tumblr, people thought it was a commercial for bottled water, and now there is this idea that the series was made because there was so much hype over this "water commerical". In fact, Free! is an adaptation of the light novel High Speed! and that "commerical" was always meant to be a promo trailer for the anime.
