Catch & Release - Catch

Summary: When your fiancé dies days before your wedding you find yourself confronted with his lies. When his best friend attends his burial things become even more complicated as you slowly fall for the green-eyed man.

Pairing: AU Dean x Reader; Sam x Reader (mentioned), Sam x Jess (mentioned)

A/N: Loosely inspired by the movie Catch & Release. Dialogs and characters are not the same as in the movie. Sam and Dean are not brothers for my storyline.

 “How could I not see Sam was not the man I believed he is? Am I dumb? Was I too blinded by my love? Hell, I gave everything to him. Sam was my whole world and now I must realize, I never was his world,” you sniffle, looking helpless at Dean.

He’s still not used to comfort a girl. Dean Winchester never was the kind of guy who soothed a girl; he was rather the one breaking a girl’s heart.

“I can’t tell you, sweetheart,” he mumbles instinctively wrapping his arms around you.

Sobs wreck your body when you must hear Jess’s voice become louder. All you can understand is that Benny seems to want her gone, but Jimmy, well he wants her to stay.

“Figures,” Dean whispers, running his hand over your back to soothe you. “Jimmy always was into other guys girls.”

“Dean, I want to escape this nightmare. I want to just climb out of the window, run away and never remember Sam’s name or that I wasted so many years on him,” you hide your face in Dean’s chest, almost clinging to him whilst he feels his heart flutter anytime you reach out for him.

“I can’t tell you what to do, Y/N. I barely know you, but we can sneak out of the window if you want to,” a smile crosses your face until you hear Jess’s voice raise again. “I’m sorry.”

“This is not your fault, Dean. Sam was the one cheating on me, not you,” he rests his chin on top of your head, closing his eyes for a moment. “I know this must be odd for you. Soothing your dead friends’ fiancé.”

“Nah, I had worse dates. Once a girl brought a parrot to a restaurant. At first, I believed she tried to be funny but that feathered guy was her spirit animal or crap. I had to pay for the bird’s meal too,” you snicker, looking up at Dean. “I swear, it’s true.”

“You had odd dates,” humming Dean wraps one arm around your waist, presses you closer to his chest. “Any other funny dates you want to talk about?”

“There was that girl, she was a belly dancer, smoking hot and all…bendable,” you grin, following Dean when he leads you toward the window. “Long story short – she was a twin and wanted a threesome with me and her brother.”

“Gosh, did you…?” you poke Dean’s chest, giving him a knowing look. “I bet you kissed a guy and liked it!”

“No, but she’s a nice girl, still sends me Christmas cards and calls on my birthday. Even asked me to be her best man at her wedding with the parrot lady.” Dean wiggles his eyebrows before he bursts into laughter. “You believed me, didn’t you?”

“All a lie,” you whine. “The bird lady too?”

“The bird was real, sweetheart. It pooped onto my jacket, called me a jerk, and flew around the restaurant. In the end, we got kicked out,” laughing you look at Dean. He gives you a soft smile, glad he could distract you for a moment or two.

“Can we just run away for tonight?”

“Phew, that was a close call. They almost caught us sneak out,” Dean smirks, holding out his hand to help you sit on the hood of Benny’s truck you stole to drive to the lake. “Haven’t been here for like twelve years.”

“Sam liked to fish, but I couldn’t watch him kill the fish,” you lean your head against Dean’s shoulder, just watching the water.

“I don’t like it either,” smiling you watch Dean who points toward the lake. “I like to eat fish but don’t want to kill it first.”

“Sam and I, we didn’t share interests or hobbies. I never thought I would say so, but when I look back at my relationship with Sam, I don’t think we were meant to be.”

He doesn’t say a word, nor does he react when you rest your head on his lap. Dean simply watches you close your eyes, smiling when your breathing evens out.

“Just sleep a bit, sweetheart. I will not let that girl hurt you, promised.”

“Where have you been? We were worried sick,” Jimmy exclaims, glaring at Dean who has one arm slung around your waist.

“You mean you were worried sick,” Benny grunts. “I told you she’s safe with Dean. Now be quiet. I don’t think Y/N needs more stress than you already caused. Letting that chick, the proof of Sam’s infidelity, inside,” you never saw Benny that mad before. His nostrils flare and he balls his hands into fists. “Leave Y/N and Dean alone.”

“I was simply worried, Benny. They could’ve told us…,” Jimmy stammers, watching you look at Jess who still sits on the couch. The blonde runs one hand over her belly, not missing the way you follow the motion.

“We kinda didn’t want to meet up with a certain person. Just drop it, okay,” Dean grumbles, too angry to handle Jimmy’s jealousy. “I suggest you send Jess to Sam’s mother. I bet Mary Winchester would be happy to see the girl who ruined Y/N’s relationship with Sam.” Dean leads you toward the backyard to take a few deep breaths.

“Thank you,” mumbling the words you run one hand over Dean’s back to calm him. “I don’t know if I want to pity Jess for carrying her dead lovers baby or to beat the shit out of her,” you laugh, covering your mouth with the palm of your right hand when the laughter turns into sobs. “How could he do this to me?”

“Oh-sweetheart, Sam was a fool,” you run into the house when Jess walks outside to get fresh air, calling your name. “You shouldn’t have come here, Jess.”

“I had to,” Jess sighs. “I’m alone, pregnant and just lost my job. Sam was as much responsible than I that a baby is on her way,” Dean looks away, not wanting to pity Jess. “I can understand why he came to me, Dean. Sam always seemed to be under pressure. Now I know why – she’s unique, lovely, and beautiful. Smart too, according to Jimmy.”

You flatten against the wall, hiding in the shadows to listen to Jess’s words.

“Sam, he relaxed with me. I was nothing but convenient when the stress of playing the perfect man for Y/N was too much. I never wanted to get pregnant, that wasn’t the plan.”

“What was the plan?” Dean huffs. “Fucking Sammy until he gets married or did the two of you plan to keep on doing it?”

“Honestly…,” Jess hangs her head, shaking it lightly, “I don’t know Dean. When we parted ways after college, I always tried to reach out for Sam. One day, he was at your place, we ran into each other and the spark reignited. Back then he said it was only this once, that he loves Y/N, and believe me, he did but…”

“The need to relax was stronger, I get,” Dean watches you sneak into the house, a sad smile on his lips. “Sam should’ve made a decision, not fool two girls…”

“He wanted to end things or rather did so. Sam didn’t want to come to California before his wedding, but I insisted that he needs to help me with the baby,” Jess rubs her arms, looking at Dean. “It’s my fault he’s dead, Dean. If not for my selfishness Sam could be alive, married to the woman he loved.”

“True, but Sam decided to drive to California instead of telling you no. We saw the pictures, Jess. He came to you, had fun, took nice pictures, and drove back to his fiancé,” Dean’s patience is wearing thin when Jess tries to excuse the pictures.

“One last nice memory, you know. That’s what the pictures are, nothing else.” Dean brushes past Jess. He looks over his shoulder, not hiding his disgust.

“You mean you fucked one last time before he drove off to marry someone else. Whilst you decided to wait in California for him to come back and do it all over again.”

“You should’ve known better than letting that girl in,” Benny chastises. “Y/N is vulnerable, hurt, and devasted and you just threw that pregnant girl at her.”

“Benny, calm down. We are all tired,” Dean rubs his eyes, hating he can hear sobs come from inside your room. “I’ll check on Y/N. I hate to say it, but we can’t let a pregnant girl sleep on the street. The first thing in the morning we will do is to call Mary Winchester. She can take care of her sons’ concubine,” storming off Dean ignores Jimmy’s angry grunts.

“Who does he think he is? Mr. One-night-stand can’t just act as if he’s Y/N’s best friend,” Jimmy narrows his eyes, not liking Benny silently nods at Dean. “Great, you are on that asshole’s side.”

“Whoever can make Y/N feel better is welcome to try. Dean is a good guy. Believe it or not, he never cheated on a woman. He’s a heartbreaker but never promised a girl to marry her only to fuck his ex. That was Sam’s specialty. If you excuse me now,” Benny grunts. “I lost one of my best friends. His fiancé, my friend is crying in her room and I’m tired enough to fall asleep standing.”

“Still, he shouldn’t be with her…”

“You didn’t have to come here, Dean. I understand if you are tired of catching me whenever I fall. You barely know me and,” he’s pressing his index finger to your lips, shaking his head.

“If I didn’t want to be here, I would’ve left hours or days ago. How about we try to get some sleep?” giving Dean a sly smile you nod; thankful he doesn’t want to leave you alone tonight. “I need confirmation, ma’am.”

You giggle, mumbling ‘yes Sir’ before you crawl onto the bed, resting your tired body onto the soft mattress. “Dean, thank you.”

“Bake me a pie one day and we are even,” he smirks, shrugging his jacket off his shoulders. You don’t want to be a creep but you can’t take your eyes off Dean when he unbuttons his shirt. “Did you ever think that it was Sam’s fault, not yours? He was the one cheating on you. There is nothing wrong with you.”

Dean lies next to you, carefully running his fingers through your hair. “I’m no one you want to stay with, Dean. Look at her and then…” Dean’s lips press against yours and you gasp before you lose yourself in the kiss.

At first, it’s slow, gentle but you grasp for his hair, tug harshly at the soft strands, causing Dean to growls against your lips. “Catch me one last time, Dean…”

“Remind me again why we keep doing this?” you were completely out of breath, trying to keep up with Perry who was running a few meters ahead of you, clearly in better shape than you were in.

“Because we need to take care of our bodies and need to look our absolute best at all times.”

No, that was not the reason why you were doing this and you both knew it.

You were doing this, because Jeongguk, Perry's ex-boyfriend and one of your best friends, usually used this time of the day to play soccer with a couple of friends. Not professionally, even though Jeongguk was in the university's soccer team, but to have a few hours of fun before the stress of uni would get to them all again.

And your dear friend Perry, who had been training like a crazy person for the last month so that she’d have the ultimate dream body, wanted to show him what he was missing.

And, well, she didn't want to do laps on her own, so she decided to drag you with her.

“Perry, he doesn't even care that we're here,” you whined, running a little faster to finally catch up with her, “We've been running around in circles for more than thirty minutes and I'm fucking tired. I also need to study for Mister Kim's test next week..-”

“Fuck the test,” she cut you off.

“Fuck the test?” finally you came to a halt, grabbing her arm to make her stop as well, “What the hell is that supposed to mean? You were the one who wanted to learn Korean!”

“I wanted to swear at my ex-boyfriend in his native language and screw Mister Kim. I don't care whether or not I pass his class.”

“Do you think Mister Kim is going to find it attractive if you'll fail his test?” you tried to argue, “I think he'd like it a lot more if you were at least semi-good.”

“Or he's going to offer me some private lessons instead when he realizes how bad I'm doing. A few tears here, a bit of begging there, and he and I will sleep with each other in no time,” her reasoning was so fucking dumb, it actually made you lose a few of your brain cells, you were sure of it.

“Who's going to sleep with who?” Jeongguk asked with a happy laugh, the ball under his arm.

Despite the ugly relationship that him and Perry were now having, you and him were still really good with each other. You knew that he never wanted to hurt Perry and that if it was up to him, the two of them would still be friends, but she wasn't interested in being friends.

She wanted all or nothing.

And he couldn't give her his all, unfortunately.

“Me. With one of my professors,” she said cockily, “Why? Does that make you angry?”

“Not really. It actually doesn't even surprise me,” Jeongguk shrugged, wanting to focus on you instead, but Perry wasn't done with him yet.

“It's Mister Kim. Do you know him? He's the most handsome guy this campus has to offer. And Korean. A much more handsome Korean.”

“Are you guys talking about Mister Kim?”

And there he was.

Kim fucking Taehyung, turning up when you really didn't need him to.

You looked like a truck had rolled you over with the way you were sweating, your hair sticking to all sides and your make-up pretty much non-existent at this point. It was just your luck that today was the day he decided to come over to you and see you.. like this.

“Perry thinks she can sleep with him,” Jeongguk muttered, making Taehyung's eyebrows furrow and then laugh.

But that only angered Perry even more, apparently.

“What, you guys think I'm not serious?!”

“Perry, maybe you should..-” you tried to calm her down, but she was already too far gone to stop her now.

“No, here's what I should do! I should let Mister Kim fuck me against his desk and finally have an orgasm for the first time in ages, because someone couldn't give me any.”

A small crowd of Jeongguk's friends had gathered behind you guys, all of them curious how this would play out. And as soon as the words were out of her mouth, all of them started whistling at the shade she was throwing.

Jeongguk, however, kept calm.

“Do you really want to do this, Perry? I thought we were more mature than this.”

“Oh, I am the mature one. I wasn't the one who had to get his underwear to his mommy so she could wash it for him.”

This wasn't right.

You knew how upset Perry was over the break-up, but Jeongguk had never said a bad word about her in his life, this wasn't fair of her.

Yet, before you could do anything to stop the argument, a hand on your lower back surprised you and pushed you away from them.

A hand that you hadn't expected to touch you.. ever.

“Alright, everyone. Let's give them some space,” Taehyung walked with you to the crowd of his friends, “Nothing to see here, except for two morons, so please walk along and enjoy the rest of your day, thank you very much.”

They seemed to be disappointed, but with Taehyung and Jeongguk being the most popular out of the group, they all listened and ended up playing soccer again on their own.

And then it was Perry and Jeongguk arguing and you standing there awkwardly next to your crush.

“Thanks for wanting to help him back there..”

“Jeongguk is my friend too,” you said with a sigh, your eyes still lingering on the pair of ex-lovers, “I don't want them to be like this.”

“I know. And that's really kind of you,” Taehyung smiled sweetly, hesitating for a moment before asking: “Your name is (Y/N), right?”

He knew your name?

Kim Taehyung, the most popular guy of this university and the one that almost every girl on this fucking campus had a crush on, knew your fucking name.

This was the best day of your life, hands down.

“It is,” you said a little surprised, but with a smile.

“Yeah, Jeongguk told me about you. He told me that you and his ex and Jimin and him used to hang out a lot when they were still dating..”

“Yeah, it started out as a study group, actually. We all became friends at some point and then Jeongguk and Perry started becoming a thing and.. well.. you know the rest.”

“And.. you and Jimin became a thing too?”

“No,” you laughed a little shyly, “Jimin is a really good friend, but.. that's it.”

“That's.. good to know,” Taehyung smirked. Actually smirked. Like you not dating Jimin meant something to him.

“Is it?” you continued to laugh, but now a bit more nervously, because you didn't know where this conversation was heading and you weren't sure if you were ready for either way. The good or the bad one.

“It's always nice to know when a pretty girl is still single,” he crossed his arms in front of his chest and continued to look at you with pure confidence in his eyes that made you want to drop to your knees for him right away.

“Oh.. thank you,” your face was already flushed because of all the running but you imagined it was only getting worse now.

As such, we have a few actual bite sized reviews (because I acknowledge I have a habit of rambling in even my shorter reviews). There is no theme, literally a mish-mash of books I should have reviewed for the past 2 months. I have a couple more to come and then I might talk about my bookish highlights from the past couple of months because I’ve read some awesome books lately (although these ARC reviews might make it seem like I haven’t).

Let’s begin with a DNF (or two). I thought this would be a fun read of a Duke meeting with the woman who scammed him and forcing her to stay with him until her debts are paid. I obviously should have read the summary much more closely as it does say he never suspects his lover of a single night scammed him. Well, his naivete and how utterly gullible he was pissed me right off. He was annoying and a wet blanket to be honest. I didn’t like him one jot. He was boring. So I began reading this book of a woman who scammed a man over one night and then left him with no intention of seeing him again and whilst I probably would have grown to like her (have to respect a woman who is making it on her own scamming the rich) I didn’t ever get to know her because boring mc-boringpants The Duke of Greyland was the one whose perspective you had at the start and he just gradually pissed me off by being an utter idiot so I DNF-ed before the book actually made me angry.

Does it count that I liked the idea at least?

DNF number 2 was an upsetting one for me. I’d seen other bloggers review and although I hadn’t seen any 5-star reviews I had seen positive ones. Sure, people’s small criticisms did raise a few red flags for me, but just to go in wary. Sadly, I think my opinions may have been coloured by those other bloggers… or I am just less willing to put up with books I’m not behind 100%. Whatever happened I ended up not clicking with this book.

Carlos, we met in The Wedding Date and I was interested to see his story and so when we’re introduced to Nik I was excited. Nik seemed like she would be sassy and fun… but I just didn’t feel a spark between the two when I was reading. The chemistry wasn’t there for me so I didn’t feel invested in the path of them getting together. I mean, this is a term normally reserved for several YA books I've read, but it felt a little insta-lovey. I in no way believed the spark that apparently existed. I know in romance characters go on about how good looking the other is and about how they've kept thinking about them but although Carlos's rescue was kind I could not see Nik pursuing more from that alone. Both of them were apparently interested but I didn’t get why when reading. And when you were in Carlos’s head and he was thinking things like ‘is that a hint’ or ‘is she giving me signals’ and all that crap just made me like him. Yeah, folks probably do have those thoughts but it was so jarring to read them!

There were characters I was interested to learn more about (I loved Nik’s friends) but that was not enough to keep me reading.

This one I finished (yay) and it was a more middling read for me. I certainly enjoyed myself from time to time but it’s been a month and looking back on this one I have to flick back to my comments I wrote whilst reading because it’s not stood the books amnesia test well. That’s not to say that’s a point against this book, I forget many a book, but if I hadn’t have reread the summary and had a couple of notes to hand I definitely wouldn’t have remembered anything of this book.

There was something which stopped me fully invested in reading this. I did enjoy it and both the characters appealed to me, the Earl was interesting and I liked him, and Fiona’s quest to receive her dowry to pay a blackmailer was pretty exciting (although a touch farfetched). I liked how Fiona was not daunted by anything, she made the most of things and went with it and who can’t respect that in a woman. I did like the interaction between our romantic couple but I just didn’t fully wholeheartedly invested. I did roll my eyes a little as the mystery of the blackmailer was revealed too, because really? I don’t know. It was enjoyable enough and I’d read more from Anna Bennett because hopefully, it would click next time.

This one I honestly don’t remember why I requested this on Netgalley because apart from the fake relationship aspect (which is my bread and butter) there is nothing about this which would usually appeal. Cowboys are not my jam in romance (and why are they so popular, there a whole heap of cowboy romances out there in the world!). That being said I did enjoy this but it was another middling read as a whole and that was mostly because the fake relationship didn’t last all that long. The very beginning had Olivia and Luke faking their relationship but it very swiftly turned to a genuine one and this pare who were convinced they weren’t going to be together realised that they had a serious case of denial because there were sparks flying and they definitely were meant to be. I mean, I think that aspect would have worked for me but the part that really annoyed me was Olivia had broken up with her ex to try and push him to ‘put a ring on it’. That kind of game playing rubs me the wrong way so that and her uppity attitude you get from her at the start put me off. You do get to see another side of her but I think as a whole she was never destined to be a heroine I loved because I prefer them a bit more stubborn and with a bit more attitude. In the end, it was ok and I enjoyed it… but I wouldn’t go back for more.

Her only allies are no-nonsense Alys, easygoing Evander, and perpetually underestimated Newt, and Cassa struggles to come to terms with the legacy of rebellion her dead parents have left her — and the fear that she may be inadequate to shoulder the burden. But by the time Cassa and her friends uncover the mystery of the final infallible prophecy, it may be too late to save the city — or themselves.

This is one I had been excited for, I loved Destiny Soria’s debut, Iron Cast, and so when I saw she had a new fantasy novel coming out I most definitely wanted to read. think my expectations had been a touch high because although I enjoyed it, it didn’t compare to that debut for me. That being said, I don’t really think a novel set in alternate history Boston in 1919 can really be compared to a full fantasy novel set in its own world where there is a city controlled by a government who uses prophecies to stay in power. They're not really comparable so if you loved Iron Cast then be prepared for a different kind of book in this one (which I thought I was but I still something didn’t work for me).

I will say, though, I wasn’t in a fantasy mood when I started this so even I knew it would be a struggle for it to click into place and work for me so the poor book started on the backfoot. It also had multiple POV, not loads, but more than I like in my books and that put me off it a little too. The characters were all interesting and I loved seeing the dynamics between each of them, from Cassa and her back and forth with Evander, to Evander interacting with his sister, Alys. Each character has a distinct personality so even if it hadn’t said at the start of a chapter, you knew whose POV you were reading from. Sadly, I think the multiple POV meant I didn’t connect quick enough with the characters. For the first quarter of the book at least I couldn’t figure why I should care about these characters and even them investigating the corruption of the government did nothing for me.

Maybe if I’d begin this book at another time I’d be raving about. I will say no one can complain about a book which has so much diversity within its pages, from racial diversity to sexual with gay and bi characters. I do appreciate when fantasy novels make the effort because there has been too little diversity in them for too long. I just wish I’d been in a fantasy reading mood for this one as my rating is very much influenced by that.

Virginia is For Lovers (January 2017)

A couple months back in November of 2016, I had decided to take a Greyhound bus at 3 AM to go to Washington DC. It was an 8 hour ride, and I spent 8 hours in the city to ride back home another 8 hours that ended up becoming 10 hours. I went on a Sunday night after the election had taken place. It was the Sunday after my birthday party on the 11th. 

Cameron L, not Cameron B because I didn’t know him yet, had been asking me to hang out with him that weekend, and I was itching to go on another trip already even though I had just gotten back from one that week. I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone by hanging out with him in Plaza Midwood before catching my bus at the Greyhound station. I didn’t feel like driving 8 hours myself, so I looked at other options on an app called Wanderu. It said that I could take off on a trip to Washington, DC that night for $36, and that seemed like the best option I could find as far as interesting destinations for affordable prices went. 

There was really nothing going on that night, so we just hung out at the Common Market, and then we got some greasy food at the Diamond. He was still talking a lot about his ex. I thought he needed to vent and get some things off his chest, so I sat there and listened. I told him not to pay for me, but he did anyways. I guess it was my payment for being at therapist that night. 

I didn’t realize that it had gotten so late, and I had about 30 minutes before my bus took off at midnight. I drove to the Greyhound station, and to my dismay, there was no overnight parking. Fuck. 

I called Cameron again and asked him if I could park my car in his apartment complex that night, and he agreed to help me by driving me to the bus station. We had to hurry. Time kept going by even faster. 

When we got to the bus station again, the bus had already left.  I had to catch the next bus which left at 3 AM. 

Now we had some time to kill, so Cameron said we could just hang out at his house. He gave me a tour of his place, what he could find that was actually in place anyways. The breakup was so fresh, that a lot of his stuff was still in boxes from just moving in with a new roommate. 

You could tell so much about him and his hobbies by just walking in and briefly taking in his surroundings. There were craft beers on the counter, sketchbooks on the coffee table, a guitar in the living room, a giant bong on the counter, and the bookcase was filled with books of Wicca, spells, and astrology. He showed me a book about astrology and plopped it onto the table. He seemed to have had my birthday bookmarked, as he flipped right to it without even having to verify when my birthday was. He told me that he’d read about my personality description based off of my birthday already, and that he thought we were going to get along great because of it. . .

Admittedly, I do research people based on their astrological charts myself, but usually I just don’t tell them. And I let actually getting to know them prove to me if I like them. I can’t just judge them by their sign. 

I felt like he was really trying to convince himself that I was this “amazing” person in order to get over his ex, but he had no proof of it yet. He just thought he knew because he read about it. 

I think astrology can give you a very, very small inside look about what to expect about someone’s personality, but everyone is so unique and different in their personality. We can’t just classify everyone into groups and assume that they’ll be a certain way because of meeting other people in their sign, religion, or race. He seemed like a very outlandish, open-minded guy, but at the same time was too decided upon the fact that he knew I was amazing. I didn’t want to be amazing because someone wanted me to be.  I wanted to be amazing by myself on my own time and my own terms. 

It was time to catch the bus eventually. I thanked him for his hospitality, for driving me to the bus station, and for paying for dinner. I never would have asked for any of that though. It was just the circumstances, and I felt bad because he made it so apparent that he wanted to be attracted to me. I felt like I was using him, but in a way, he was using me too. He was using me as a distraction from his ex. 

When I boarded the bus, the only open seat left was near the very back of the bus next to a guy wearing a beanie who looked to be about my age. He had a lot of stuff with him. He had two giant duffle bags, a skateboard, and a backpack. His luggage took up pretty much the entire backseat of the bus. He had even more stuff below the bus.

I introduced myself to him because I didn’t want to be rude. His facial expression seemed to be angry or very focused. Perhaps both. 

He told me that his name was Dylan, and that he was exhausted from traveling already because he’d just gotten off a 12 hour bus ride from New Orleans where he used to live. He told me that he’d just decided to pick up everything he owned, sell what he didn’t need, and move back to Richmond, VA, where I had a layover the next morning. He said that his reason for moving would be a really long story to explain, but we had about 6 hours to kill, so I listened to every word. 

“Alright, you asked for it. I’m moving to Richmond so that I can win back the love of my life. About 9 years ago is when I met her while we were both vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC. We were just teenagers back then. She was with her family, and I was with my pals. I thought she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever met, and that she had the most beautiful soul to match. 

She came from a really sheltered family since she was homeschooled, and her family was really religious and conservative. They didn’t like me because of my long hair back then. They thought I wasn’t good enough for her, and that I was trouble. They were right, but despite everything they thought of me, I knew that I still wanted to be with her. We exchanged phone numbers, email addresses, myspace accounts. Everything. 

We tried having a long distance relationship for a while, but it was on and off. Neither of us wanted to get in the way of each other’s lives, but we started drifting apart. We each ended up dating other people. The whole time though, we still kept in touch. There has been nobody else that I’ve ever thought of more than her. 

A year ago, she got married to this guy who had a good, stable job. He’s an engineer. How boring, right? I couldn’t believe she married him. I knew it was just for money. She doesn’t actually love him. I know she doesn’t, but she won’t admit it because she’s too good of a person. How could she love him if she complains about him to me? If she truly loved him, she wouldn’t be talking to me at all. She would have forgotten about me already. 

I feel like she secretly wants to be rescued, you know? Like she’s telling me all of this and hoping that someday I’ll come up to see her again. She complains about how her husband doesn’t pay attention to her, doesn’t tell her she’s beautiful, doesn’t make life exciting, and I think she deserves so much more. I know I don’t have a lot of money, he’s got me beat on that for sure, but I can make her life worth while. I can love her better. 

She doesn’t want to be the one to disappoint everybody by breaking up with this dude. She told me where she works, I know where she lives, I just never went for it until now. I don’t know why it took so long, but here I am doing it, and I’m nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time. This could be the worst decision of my life and a huge mistake for all I know, but it’s for her, and she’s worth taking that risk.”

I was inspired by this dude’s romantic drive. It was refreshing to see that some people out there still place so much value on true love. I was just hoping for his sake, that it was true love after all. I wanted so badly for this to work out for him. It was a similar story to my own which ended in failure. I wanted this to work for him so he could win for both of us. 

As a parting gift to me for listening to his story, he told me to read this book called “The Doors of Perception”. It was his favorite book that he’d read about 80 times already. He said that it was selfish of him to keep the knowledge of this book to himself, so he wanted to pass it onto me. After reading the book that inspired the name for Jim Morrisson’s famous band, “The Doors,” I thought that I would pass it on to my ex-boyfriend Ryan since that was one of his favorite bands and he likes to read too. Share your gifts and talents. 

I wished him luck, and waved goodbye to Dylan as I boarded my next bus to Washington, DC. I knew I’d come back to Richmond one day in hopes of magically running into him on the street to catch up and see if he really did get the girl, but that never happened. That only happens in movies. I did go back to Richmond, however. 

I kept hearing about how cool Richmond, VA was. It seemed to be a hub for the arts, and a lot of people from Charlotte were either past residents from there, or had just visited. I kept hearing about it, and it stayed on my mind. I had to see it for myself. 

I drove very carefully on the way up since there were so many signs on the highways warning that the speed limit was heavily monitored by aircraft. People who get speeding tickets in VA usually end up in jail too, so I really wasn’t going to let that happen. I drove like a grandma and followed the speed limit the whole time, then cackled when I’d see the cars that passed me before and gave me the middle-finger end up being pulled over. Serves their rude asses right!

Richmond was a pretty hip place. I couldn’t find too many chain restaurants there, I ate at a place called “The Vagabond” which had an extensive menu of fusion food and a basement that was a jazz club on Wednesday nights. People there were pretty laid back and seemed to be in no rush. There were a lot of thrift-shops and record stores. I’d purchased a George Michael pin from a place called “Blue Bone Vintage,” a mid-length wig in my natural hair color, some Edgar Allen Poe socks when I went to the Poe Museum, and a porcelain babydoll arm ornament from a hotel appropriately named “Quirk”. The ornament now hangs in my car, and is my official hand to hold and travel companion when I drive now. 

I had a lot of fun in Richmond, and especially because I felt like I was a spy when I was walking around with a wig on my head. I realized that having “normal” hair didn’t really phase people at all, and that they were more likely to talk to me when I was bald. I thought that having long hair was what everyone wanted, but my experience in Virginia proved that having the same hairstyle as everyone else makes people not really take a second glance at you. I thought I was supposed to be scarier with a shaved head, but it made me more approachable, more interesting, and more respected than when I just looked normal.
